The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

body-five-star-best-number-one

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

#1 School Assignment Organization App

I am currently a sophomore in college and have been using this app since my sophomore year in high school. I cannot even imagine how i would stay organized without it. It is so easy to see what assignments need to be turned in, and i can also see my schedule day by day. I also uplaod pictures of needed pages in my textbook so i do not have to bring it home with me. The schools i have not had teachers that use the app to post assignments and it has still been very benneficial to me. you can fully use the app for free, but i choose to pay the annual fee which is very affordable at around just $5 i beleive. You can also sync your classes and assignments to your icloud calendar so it is all visible on your iphone. everything syncronizes easily between my devices and can even be accessed online from a school computer. In college i have gone to complete paperless work, where i have all my textbooks and nots on my ipad, and when i need to turn in an assignment i just print it off after completing it on my ipad. This app really helps with that where i can easily track all assignments that i have due right on my ipad, along with my notes and textbooks. I tried multiple different homework tracking apps and this is by far the best on the market.

Most useful app on Mac and iPhone

Mid-semester this spring, I had to reorganize my classes before starting two condensed courses on March 23. I searched for an app that would act as a digital homework planner with a clean interface, reminders, satisfying check boxes to click after completing assignments. Every traditional planner I’ve ever bought has ended up in the recycle bin so I figured it might be time to take my academics into the 21st century with some sort of organizer app geared specifically toward school. I found exactly that. This little widget has made my life exponentially more manageable and productive. The free version can do pretty much everything I would need it to do in order to stay organized. When I found out that the paid subscription is $4.99 for a year, I bought it to unlock the additional features like uploading documents, personalize the theme, but most importantly to support the developers who designed this app that has added much more than $4.99 of value to my life. I recommend myHomework to all of my classmates and friends. Truly a great investment in my own personal acadmic success. Thank you everyone at Instin, LLC.! You are doing great things. Cheers, Erik

I Love It, But...

I really enjoy this app - I use it everyday as HS student to keep organized with my classes. It has great features (I love the calendar, how you can preview your month with the tasks you've already put in, etc...) and I also enjoy the themes. The thing I love the most is the way it syncs between my iPhone and my Mac, so I can have my calendar everywhere! I plan to use this in college when I graduate at the end of this year. My only complaints are that it sometimes goes through phases of crashing (which can be so frustrating when you're trying to punch a deadline in as soon as the teacher verbally announces it in the middle of a lecture!), and the fact that you don't have the option to separate your tasks by time. By this I mean, just like in the previous homework app I used, it doesn't separate tasks by week, two weeks, three weeks, month, etc. I just feel like it would be more organized and nicer looking this way. When I have 6 tasks for the upcoming week and 3 that are over a month away in one place, it makes me feel cluttered - constantly reminding myself that "Oh, that isn't due until-" is a slight nuisance. May just be me but I'd love the option to organize things better in that way!

How To Pick the Best Digital Planner for You

How do you determine the perfect planner for you? That depends on whether you need to track assigned tasks, quarterly goals, timesheets, or streamline automation; remember, the possibilities are almost endless.

It’s important to think about the features and what outcomes they should help drive.

We’d strongly encourage you to answer the following questions as you decide on what digital planning app makes the most sense for you and how you want to use a planner at work .

  • Does the digital planner show meetings and important tasks in one place? Any planner app should merge calendar events and tasks into a single view (like an analog/traditional planner does)
  • Does the planner integrate with existing tools? If you already use project management software, the planner needs to pull work out of those systems.
  • Does the digital planner complement existing tools? You don’t need another calendar app. You don’t need another project management tool. You need a way to roadmap your day and finish with a feeling of accomplishment.
  • Is the planner available on multiple platforms and devices? Is a mobile app available? Does the team regularly update the product? Is it easy to chat with support?
  • Does the digital planner drive regular reflection and continuous improvement? Can you see how you are allocating your time on a regular basis? Does the tool help you have more successful days? These are a few of the ideas that you could include in your planner that may help you evaluate the right one for you.

The 5 Best Digital Planners That Are Worth Using in 2024

Your email has been sent

Image of Kara Sherrer

  • Best overall: Todoist
  • Best for pre-built templates: ClickUp
  • Best for note taking: Notion
  • Best for time blocking: Structured
  • Best for teachers: Planbook

If you still associate planners with the spiral bound notebooks of your middle-school days, think again. Planners have gotten a huge digital upgrade, and now there’s no reason to use a traditional planner unless you prefer the tactile feel of pages (and having to make all the changes by hand every time a meeting gets scheduled).

But the field of digital planners is so crowded that it can be tough to find the best one for your needs. To help you out, we’ve done the research and testing to select the five best digital planners for a variety of needs — and most of them are free to use, forever.

Top digital planner comparison

Besides price, there are many factors to consider when choosing a digital planner. We’ve summarized the most important ones in the table below:

Todoist: Best overall

Todoist logo.

If you’re looking for a simple, easy app to use as a digital planner, definitely consider Todoist. As the name suggests, it was originally designed for tracking to-do lists, but it offers many more features besides that, such as recurring due dates, task labels, priority levels and planning templates. It comes in many different app versions that you can download, including smartwatch apps for Apple and Google devices. There are a few drawbacks, however. For instance, two-way sync is not currently supported for Apple or Outlook calendars.

Why I chose Todoist

I used Todoist’s free Beginner plan as my own personal digital planner for many years, and I recommend it for its excellent balance of simplicity, functionality and cost. The free plan will be enough for most people, but you’ll need to pay for the Pro plan if you want access to additional features like calendar view and task reminders.

For more information, read the full Todoist review .

  • Beginner : Free for up to 5 personal projects and 5 guests per product.
  • Pro : $4 per user per month if billed annually, or $5 per user per month if billed month-to-month.
  • Business : $6 per user per month if billed annually, or $8 per user per month if billed month-to-month.
  • Ability to set due dates and times and schedule recurring tasks.
  • Priority levels for different tasks.
  • Task labels to batch them by type.
  • Various planning templates.

Todoist’s simple interface.

Pros and cons

Clickup: best for pre-built templates.

ClickUp logo.

If you’re searching for a digital planner that offers many pre-built templates to choose from, check out ClickUp, which offers over 1,000 templates — including templates for planning out your day, project, vacation or even your wedding. The free forever plan supports unlimited tasks, so you can use it as your daily planner indefinitely without running into a paywall. It also supports unlimited guests, making it a great option for families or small businesses that want to share a digital planner among multiple people.

Why I chose ClickUp

I chose ClickUp because of its extensive library of templates and its generous free plan, which should be plenty for most users seeking out a digital planner. I also like its friendly and colorful interface, which is very welcoming to new users.

For more information, read the full ClickUp review .

  • Free : Unlimited users and tasks.
  • Unlimited : $7 per user per month if billed annually, or $10 per user per month if billed month-to-month.
  • Business : $12 per user per month if billed annually, or $19 per user per month if billed month-to-month.
  • Enterprise : Contact sales for custom pricing.
  • ClickUp AI : Add on to any paid plan for $5 per person per month.
  • Additional project views such as kanban boards and calendars.
  • Virtual whiteboard for brainstorming.
  • Collaborating documents for note taking and content creation.
  • Customizable subtasks available.

Notion: Best for note taking

Notion logo.

In addition to its task management features, Notion also offers tools for note taking, content creation and wikibuilding. This makes it an excellent choice for users who want to use a single app to keep track of their notes, to-dos and calendars (as opposed to having a separate app for notes). Its task and project management features aren’t as robust as ClickUp’s, but that means a lower learning curve for beginners. If you just need daily planning capabilities instead of advanced project management, Notion will more than meet your needs.

Why I chose Notion

I chose Notion as one of the best digital planners because of its excellent task management and content creation features. I found the app very easy to use during testing, and the forever free plan should be enough for most people looking to use Notion as a digital planner.

For more information, read the full Notion review .

  • Free : Up to 5 MB file upload size limit and 7-day page history.
  • Plus : $8 per user per month if billed annually, or $10 per user per month if billed monthly.
  • Business : $15 per user per month if billed annually, or $18 per user per month if billed monthly.
  • Enterprise : Requires a custom pricing quote from the sales team and includes extra features such as unlimited workspaces and unlimited extensions.
  • Unlimited content blocks for individual users on the free plan.
  • Allows up to 10 guests on the free plan.
  • Big library of templates to choose from.
  • Subtasks and dependencies included in all plans.

A to-do list “database” in Notion.

Structured: Best for time blocking

Structured logo.

Structured takes a completely unique approach to daily planning that is based on time blocking. Rather than creating a static list of to-dos, you will be asked to add what day and how long you plan to work on each task and Structured will create a daily timeline for you.

This method is especially great for neurodivergent people, such as those with ADHD, but anyone can benefit from Structured’s visually appealing and streamlined UI. You can use the app for free, and there’s also a Structured Pro paid plan with additional features like calendar import and recurring tasks.

Why I chose Structured

I picked Structured as one of the best digital planners because its unique approach works especially well for neurodivergent people. I also appreciate the app’s colorful, visually appealing interface, which is very well-designed and attractive.

  • Structured : Free forever.
  • Structured Pro month subscription : $2.99.
  • Structured Pro yearly subscription : $9.99.
  • Structured Pro lifetime subscription : $29.99.
  • Timeline-based approach to daily planning.
  • Switch between daily, weekly and monthly views.
  • Import events from Apple, Google, Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, yahoo! and AOL calendars.
  • Dedicated focus time for concentrated work.

Structured’s timeline design.

Planbook: Best for teachers

Planbook logo.

If you’re a teacher looking for a digital planner for lesson planning, then take a look at Planbook. Some of the app’s education-specific features include setting up “alternate day” schedules, removing an individual class from the daily schedule and using the same lesson plans year after year.

Planbook also offers tools for lesson development and teacher collaboration, so it isn’t solely a scheduling app. Since Planbook is specifically designed for teachers, it’s not appropriate as a more general-purpose digital planner, but educators will love it for that reason.

Why I chose Planbook

I chose Planbook because it provides education-specific features that aren’t offered by the other digital planners on this list. If you’re a teacher looking to move on from physical planners, Planbook will be a powerful (and affordable!) upgrade for your needs.

  • 1-year plan : $15 per year.
  • 2-year plan : $13.50 per year.
  • 3-year plan : $12 per year.
  • Flexible lesson templates for faster, more efficient planning.
  • Permissions for establishing access levels and defining what lesson plan details students and parents can see.
  • Option to copy lesson plans from year to year.
  • Built-in learning standards for national, international and local district frameworks.

How do I choose the best digital planner for my needs?

The “best” digital planner is highly variable depending on your individual needs and situation. The best digital planner for a student who needs to keep track of their classes will be a lot simpler than the best digital planner for a business owner with multiple companies to manage. Before starting your search, make a list of the most important digital planner features for you specifically, and use that as your guide.

Some high-level features that I recommend focusing on are task management and calendar syncing, and if you don’t already have a dedicated calendar app, then look for a digital planner that provides one. The user interface design is also key; you’ll be looking at your digital planner all day, every day, so it should be easy to navigate and pleasing to look at. Also, consider what digital apps are available to download. Not all digital planners offer a web app, Windows app or smartwatch app, for example.

Finally, determine your budget before making your final selection. Most digital planners offer a forever free tier, so you don’t have to pay to use them. However, they may put certain features, such as bigger storage limits, behind a paywall. Consider whether or not those additional features are worth the cost for you personally.

Methodology

To choose the best digital planners, I consulted product documentation and user reviews in addition to testing some of the apps to get hands-on experience. Price was one of the most important criteria to me, with free and/or low-cost digital planner being an absolute must. I also focused on the planner design, app downloads, calendar sync and ease of use as high-priority criteria.

Other factors I considered included task management (such as subtasks and dependencies) as well as template libraries and additional task/project views.

Is there a free digital planner?

Yes, there are many free digital planners. Most of the digital planners we listed here, such as Todoist, ClickUp, Notion and Structured, offer a forever-free tier of service.

Are digital planners worth it?

Digital planners may offer a slightly higher learning curve compared to a paper planner, but the ease of use and convenience are worth it for many users. Digital planners offer advanced functionality, not to mention the ability to sync your to-dos across your computer, phone, tablet and even your smartwatch. And since many digital planners are free, you don’t have to pay a dime to upgrade your daily planner to an online version.

What is the best free daily planner app?

For the best free daily planner app overall, we picked Todoist because of its ease of use and many apps. However, the other free digital planners we listed here — ClickUp, Notion and Structured — are equally awesome and we highly recommend them too.

Is there a Google planner?

No, Google does not offer its own standalone planner app. You can use Google Calendar instead to schedule meetings. You can also try to create your planner templates in Google Docs, but it will lack the functionality of a full-fledged digital planner app like the ones mentioned on this list.

Does Apple make a digital planner?

No, Apple does not offer its own standalone planner app. You can use Apple Calendar to schedule meetings and create your planner templates in Pages, but it will lack the functionality of a full-fledged digital planner app, such as the ones on this list.

Can you use an iPad as a daily planner?

Yes, you can use an iPad as a daily planner. Many of the digital planners on this list offer iOS app downloads that are compatible with iPads as well as iPhones.

Is there an online planner that looks like a paper planner?

Most online digital planner apps are designed to fit the constraints of specific operating systems, so they don’t replicate the look and feel of a paper planner.

If you really want to recreate a digital version of a paper planner, your best bet is to create a planner template (or purchase one), then use a PDF annotation app to fill it out by hand using a tablet and stylus. Keep in mind that you will lose many digital planner features if you go this route, such as the ability to schedule recurring tasks and move meetings around easily.

I planned 30 trips in 3 years, and this is the app that kept me sane

Published on May 25, 2024

Around three years ago, my husband and I moved from Lebanon to Paris. Going from a country where we had to plan every trip months in advance to a country where we could hop on a train and go anywhere in Europe was life-changing. No Visa applications, no SIM card change, and no new travel insurance to buy — how could we resist? So off we went. One trip turned into another, then another, and another… And here we are today, with over 30 trips under our belt and one app to help us manage the madness: Wanderlog .

Now, before you think I’m made of money, I’ll be clear: Not all of these were week-long vacations. Many were short single-day trips to nearby towns or weekend trips. But I digress. We’re here to talk about Wanderlog.

I’ve already written about the app a few times, and I’ve mentioned it on podcasts and on Twitter to people who ask me about travel app recommendations — and to those who don’t ask me. I’ve been a Wanderlog fan since the day I stumbled on the app in the Play Store because there’s nothing like it. Trust me, I’ve looked. So let me perform some free publicity because this is one of the best Android apps out there, and it deserves to be known.

Do you use a travel planning app?

Exploring cities in wanderlog is a time-saver.

wanderlog android explore best koln breweries

The first time-saving hack in Wanderlog comes in when I start planning a trip. I just add the city or town’s name and the app will scour the internet for articles and recommendations, then list all the places there. Everything from the best brunch places in Barcelona to the must-visit attractions in Saint-Quentin, the nicest photo spots in Rouen, or the list of spas around Geneva — it’s all there.

I can simply tap to add a place to my trip, which saves me countless hours of planning. I don’t need to browse articles, manually type the name of a place in Google Maps, see if it fits the rest of my plan or is too out of the way, and then add it. I can do this inside the same app in a split second.

It takes me no longer than 10 minutes to get a preliminary plan for any trip. Now, I can use my actual research time to look for off-the-beaten-track things to do, like escape rooms, unknown attractions, and unique activities, instead of wasting it on the basic itinerary.

Personal lists vs. itinerary planning

wanderlog android map

The second feature I love the most about Wanderlog is how well it fits my travel philosophy. See, for any given trip, I have a list of things I’d like to check out and activities or places I’ve already booked. The former are fluid options; the latter are set in stone.

And Wanderlog allows me to have this flexibility. There is an itinerary for activities I’ve booked at a specific date and/or time, and then there are general lists where I can group the things I would like to do, secondary places to check out, good restaurants, local markets, escape rooms, and more.

Every list or itinerary day gets a different icon and color. Plus, I can always show or hide these on the map to avoid crowding it with all the optional stuff.

wanderlog android time to travel

Better yet, when I add places to the itinerary, I can tap to show the time it’d take me to go from one place to another by foot, transit, or car. Perfect for planning tight schedules!

Google Maps data, distance, notes, and more

wanderlog android bernabeu madrid place details

Then there’s everything else Wanderlog offers that just pushes it further ahead of any other travel planning app I’ve tried. Sure, I can add my flights or train reservations, my hotel, and my car rental, if any, but there’s a lot more here.

Wanderlog grabs Google Maps data like opening hours, websites, phone numbers, and photos for every place I add. Places have a card with my own personal notes, which I can format, add links or bullets to, and more. I use this a lot when I find a deal on an entrance ticket, specific information about the best time to visit an attraction, or really any other personal notes I need to remember on the day of the trip. There are also general notes to be added, which serve me well when I want to save information about local transit cards, specific customs, or local products to buy.

wanderlog android homescreen

Wanderlog is available on Android ( Play Store ) and iOS ( iTunes ), including tablets, and on the web. I especially appreciate that any updates I make on my Android phone show up immediately on my tablet, computer, and everything else. This makes planning trips with my husband super easy. We usually sit with one laptop and one tablet or phone, and we both add and edit things as we figure out what we want to do. Oh, and you can easily share a trip with a friend. As a matter of fact, this is the first thing the app asks you about before creating your trip.

I’ve been using Wanderlog for three years and I’ve stuck with the free version so far. For approximately $5 a month, the Pro version adds a dark mode, an offline mode, Google Maps exports, and more — not features I really need. Closing a pop-up reminder for the Pro subscription every now and then doesn’t bother me much, either. But to be fair, given how often I use the app and how much I love it, I’m starting to feel bad for not giving it my support.

wanderlog android trips planned

If you’re looking for an app to help you plan trips, try Wanderlog. It is the travel planner to end all travel planners. It can easily replace lists in Maps, spreadsheets, Chrome bookmarks, calendar events, personal notes, and more. I used to get exhausted planning one or two trips a year; now, I can plan 10 trips a year and have time to spare. That’s how good this app is.

Nicki minaj will soon apologize to fans in amsterdam drug arrest, nicki minaj apologizes to fans ... sics her lawyers & god on cops.

Nicki Minaj says she's already planning to reschedule her canceled concert in England after her drug arrest Saturday ... while also apologizing to her many fans.

In a message posted to X Sat night, the rapper explained she finally arrived at her Manchester hotel after spending about 6 hours in an Amsterdam jail.

Nicki appeared to blame military police officers for making her nix her show after they busted her for "soft drugs" at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport ... as she live-streamed the incident using her phone. She says the drugs in question were pre-rolled joints and claims they were her security guard's ... not hers.

But Nicki also claimed she had "sooooooooo much video evidence" of the airport drama and her "lawyers & God" would take it all from here.

Then she addressed her fans, stating, "Please please please accept my deepest & most sincere apologies. They sure did know exactly how to hurt me today but this too, shall pass."

Nicki promised to have a new date soon for the Manchester concert, which she speculated could go down in June or July.

And that's not all ... Nicki said there would be an added bonus for all the ticket holders of the canceled show, but she didn't reveal what it would be. What's more, Nicki announced she's performing at her scheduled Birmingham gig on Sunday.

By the way, Nicki was released from police custody after paying a fine of 350 Euros.

All's well that ends well.
