Grapevine’s Vintage FL9s Resume Service This Weekend

A pair of ex-New Haven FL9s a long way from home in Texas will be leading a season of excursions in Texas beginning this weekend on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad.

The railroad offers wine-themed excursions out Grapevine, Tex., and has used the FL9s since 2019. The new GVRR season begins February 17-18, with trains boarding at 12:30 p.m. and returning at about 7:15 p.m, following a two-hour stop at the historic stockyards district.

The railroad offers scheduled train rides of varying duration nearly every Saturday and Sunday from April through autumn along with a variety of additional special trains such as its always popular Jazz Wine Trains on April 12, 19 and 26 and a new 1920s-themed wine train scheduled to debut June 7.   For those with time constraints, the Stockyards Trinity River Excursion is a 45-minute train excursion that departs from the Historic Stockyards Station in Fort Worth.

Other upcomings specials are the Kiss Me I’m Irish Special (21+), March 15; Easter Bunny Express, March 31; Mothers Day Special, May 12; Fathers Day Special, June 16; and Summer Wine Train (21+), July 26.

Many GVRR trains sell out, so anyone hoping to ride while visiting the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area should visit the railroad website at gvrr.com to buy tickets in advance.

Built in 1960, GVRR 2014 and 2016 were from the second order of FL9s built for the New Haven Railroad. Originally numbered 2041 and 2044, the pair survived decades in commuter service for owners that later included Penn Central, Conrail, Metro-North Commuter Railroad and the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Now in a backup role is GVRR 2188, the stalwart ex-Santa Fe GP7u that had served as the railroad’s primary power since their venerable 4-6-0 “Puffy” was sidelined after the 2015 season. Built by Cooke Locomotive Works in 1896 as Southern Pacific 1829, later 2248, “Puffy” previously operated on the Texas State Railroad and the Fort Worth & Western. It is currently disassembled with no timeline for restoration.

Once marketed as “The Tarantula Train” due to the spider-like way its routes projected, the name was dropped after the City of Grapevine took ownership of the operation in 2005, purportedly due to the fearful reaction it elicited from some children.

UPDATE: During Tuesday’s press conference, officials said that around 126,000 homes were still without power. At its peak, that number was as high as 922,000.

“Our employees are members of this community as well,” Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia said. “We are working very diligently to get everything restored.”

KPRC 2 is receiving emails and calls from viewers reporting inaccuracies in the updated CenterPoint outage map . Many are saying that when they input their address, the map indicates their service has been restored, but they are still without power.

Answer: KPRC 2 contacted CenterPoint and spoke with Joshua Solis from CenterPoint Media Relations.

• Ask 2: Why do my neighbors have their power back on, but I don’t?

According to CenterPoint, there could be various reasons why the outage map shows a customer’s service as restored when they still lack power.

“First, we want to remind customers to check for damage to their equipment to ensure they can receive service as soon as the system is energized. Customers should check their weatherhead, the point where power enters the home through an electric service drop, typically a pipe on the side of the residence or building. If the weatherhead is damaged, we cannot safely restore service to the home until a licensed electrician makes the necessary repairs,” Solis said. “Customers with underground service will not have a weatherhead, but there may still be damage to their equipment that requires servicing.”

If customers find no damage to their equipment, they might be experiencing a “nested outage.”

“This occurs when, even after fixing the main issue, smaller problems still cause outages in specific areas. If a customer is potentially affected by a ‘nested outage,’” Solis explained. “We thank our customers for their patience as we continue to restore service as safely and quickly as possible.”

METRO services resume Monday on modified schedule amid ongoing storm recovery

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- In the wake of last week's severe weather, METRO will offer modified services on Monday as cleanup and power restoration efforts continue.

Customers should be aware of the following service adjustments:

Park & Ride will have limited service. Only service to the Texas Medical Center will be provided. All other Park & Ride services will be suspended.

Local Bus is expected to have regular service with potential disruptions. While regular bus service will resume, customers should prepare for potential detours and delays as cleanup continues.

METRORail Green and Purple lines will operate on their regular schedules. The red line will run as usual from Burnett Transit Center to Fannin South Transit Center. For travel beyond Burnett Transit Center to Northline Transit Center, bus shuttles will be available.

For HOV/HOT Lanes, the U.S. 290 Lane will be closed on Monday. All other express lanes will be open with the exception of the I-45 North Freeway Crosstimbers ramp, which remains closed.

METROLift and curb2curb will operate as usual.

Severe storms hit southeastern Texas on Thursday, killing four people, downing trees and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes in the Houston area and surrounding areas.

Houston woke up to scenes of destruction on after severe storms with winds of up to 100 mph spewed debris across roads, and littered the ground downtown with broken glass. Officials confirmed that four people died in the storm.

"We're in recovery mode," Houston Mayor John Whitmire said.

In a news conference on Thursday evening, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said two of the deaths were caused by falling trees, while a third person died in a crane accident.

At the news conference, Whitmire urged residents to continue to stay home amid the dangerous road conditions. Widespread power outages had also knocked out traffic lights across the city, posing traffic control hazards for morning commuters. Whitmire said officials were also "concerned" about the dangers of broken glass on roadways.

"Downtown is a mess. It's dangerous due to the glass and the lack of traffic lights," he said. "So stay at home. I can't emphasize that, repeat that enough."

"Please do not drive in Downtown Houston tonight, or for that matter, anywhere else in the region that sustained storm damage," the National Weather Service office that serves Houston and Galveston said on social media Thursday night . "Widespread debris, glass and electrical lines are in the streets. Follow local news media and emergency management officials recommendations."

Flights were grounded at Houston's two major airports because of the weather. Sustained winds topping 60 mph were recorded at Bush Intercontinental Airport, the Associated Press reports. The Houston Independent School District also canceled classes Friday at all of its schools.

There were over 772,000 power outages reported across the state as of 6 a.m. CT Friday morning, according to a USA TODAY power outage tracker .

There were over 414,000 outages reported in Harris County, by far the highest total in the state. Fort Bend County had over 29,000 reported outages while Chambers County had over 24,000 reported outages.

Friday's forecast sees a potential for more rain in the Houston and Galveston area, although the NWS says it is not expecting "anything near as robust as Thursday's line of storms."

Most of the rain is expected to fall along and south of the I-10 corridor, with an additional half inch to inch forecast south of I-10. Rain chances are expected to taper off going into the late afternoon and early evening hours, according to the NWS.
