School History
The Presentation Congregation was founded in Cork, by Nano Nagle in 1775 and the history of St. Brigid’s dates back to 2nd October 1793 when the Presentation Sisters came to Killarney.
The foundation in Killarney was noted by the annalist with emotion: “This is the first branch transplanted from the parent tree”. The first convent and school consisted of three houses in New Street.
A new building was completed in 1803 and later an industrial school was added in which girls were taught needlework, crochet, lace making and knitting. The Killarney Lace School was to become famous.
Another building was completed in 1875. In 1948 the Presentation Sisters opened a Secondary School. The foundation stone of St. Brigid’s Secondary School was laid in 1950. In 1984 the present extension to the school was completed.

Parents call for US chastity speaker Jason Evert's talk at Central Coast all-girls high school to be cancelled
Parents at a Catholic school on the NSW Central Coast are outraged that a conservative American author and chastity promoter is scheduled to speak to female students this week.
An online petition, which has amassed more than 700 signatures overnight, is calling for Jason Evert's speech to students at St Joseph's Catholic College in East Gosford on Wednesday to be cancelled.
In 2020, several schools in Ireland cancelled planned talks by Mr Evert after concerns were raised about his views on sexuality, women and contraception.
He promotes chastity among teenagers and has previously described homosexuality as "disordered", although those references have since been removed from his book.
Kelly Lacey, who has a daughter in year 10 at the all-girls school, said she was "gobsmacked and appalled" at the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay's decision to organise the talk by Mr Evert.
"There is no way this man is speaking in front of my daughter," Ms Lacey said.
"If it means keeping them home from school that day, then that's what we will do.
"But I would prefer him just to be cancelled and to take a stand against the diocese."
Ms Lacey has filed a complaint with the diocese.
Sarah Greenaway, who also has a daughter at St Joseph's, said while Mr Evert was entitled to his views, it was problematic for the diocese to organise these talks given the ongoing discussions about gendered violence and women's rights in Australia.
"It's deeply problematic, given the climate that we're living in at the moment," she said.
"And I think it's bordering on irresponsible for the diocese to take our girls down that path."
A representative for the students at St Joseph's, who did not want to be named, said the session was not appropriate, especially "in light of the recent speech given at a Catholic university in America, where a man said the degrees are useless because women should be housewives".
"So, this man coming into an all-girls school and giving a talk about chastity, it's almost condescending about the place of women in society," the student said.
Controversial views
Mr Evert founded an "outreach program" called the Chastity Project, which he has used to deliver speeches about relationships, marriage, sex and other topics to young people around the world.
His views are shared widely on his online platforms, as well as in books and podcasts.
He has compared men to dogs when talking about the need for women to dress modestly.
"It's like a dog who finally catches the mailman's truck," he said online.
"It's more than you want to handle. So, when you get the attention of men who want you for that, what's the end game here?"
The ABC has contacted Mr Evert for comment.
In a statement, the diocese said Mr Evert's sessions at Central Coast high schools would be delivered in a "non-judgemental and compassionate" way.
"[He] is a theologian, counsellor, husband and father … who has addressed millions of people across six continents about social issues and personal relationships," a spokesperson for the diocese said.
"In teaching young people about healthy relationships, Jason empowers students to make good decisions and respect themselves, their peers and their faith."
However, the spokesperson acknowledged the topics due to be discussed could be highly sensitive and said it would not be compulsory for students to attend the session.
Parents said they had only been informed that the session would not be compulsory until they raised concerns about it.
In a letter to St Joseph's parents, principal Carolina Murdoch said the feedback had been passed along to the Director of Schools, who then spoke to Mr Evert.
"Jason was grateful for the opportunity to receive the feedback and provided assurances that his presentation will be delivered in a very compassionate and charitable manner," the letter stated.
"[It will be] without judgement and with respect for all."

KYIV – Russian missiles slammed into Ukraine’s second-largest city in the country's northeast and killed at least seven civilians early Thursday, officials said, as Kyiv’s army labored to hold off an intense cross-border offensive by the Kremlin’s larger and better-equipped forces .
At least 20 people were wounded as S-300 missiles struck the city of Kharkiv , regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said. Explosions reverberated around the city of some 1 million people.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack “extremely cruel” and expressed renewed frustration at not getting enough air defense systems from the country’s Western partners to prevent the barrages after more than two years on unrelenting war.
The city of Kharkiv, which is the capital of the region of the same name, is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Russian border. Moscow’s troops have in recent weeks captured villages in the area as part of a broad push, and analysts say they may be trying to get within artillery range of the city.
The Russian push is shaping up to be Ukraine’s biggest test since Moscow's full-scale invasion in February 2022, with outnumbered and outgunned Ukrainian forces being pressed at several points along the about 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line that snakes from north to south in eastern Ukraine.
With Kyiv short of air defenses and waiting for more Western military support that only recently started trickling in, Ukraine's army has been pushed back in places while Russia has pounded its power grid and civilian areas. Kyiv endured further power outages on Thursday.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said the attacks underscored the country's “urgent” need for more U.S.-made Patriot systems to defend its skies.
Germany recently pledged one of the missile systems "but getting six more as soon as possible remains critical not only for Ukraine’s survival but for peace in Europe,” Kuleba wrote on the social media platform X.
The United States is expected to announce an additional $275 million in military aid for Ukraine on Friday, two U.S. officials told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity to provide details of the support before the public announcement.
But no air defense systems appear to be included in the package containing high mobility artillery rocket systems, or HIMARS, as well as essential 155 mm and 105 mm artillery rounds.
Zelenskyy said the main hotspots in recent fighting have been Kharkiv and the neighboring Donetsk region, where Ukraine’s defenders withdrew in February from the stronghold of Avdiivka . For the Kremlin, taking control of all of partially occupied Donetsk is a war priority.
At the same time, and in an apparent effort to stretch Ukraine’s depleted forces, Russian troops have made incursions in the northern Sumy region.
Nearly 1,500 people, including 200 children, have been evacuated from the towns of Bilopillia and Vorozhba there, according to regional Gov. Volodymyr Artiukh.
“The main focus (of the fighting) is on the entire border area,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address Wednesday.
In Liubotyn, a small town about 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of the city of Kharkiv, Russian missiles struck the town’s center, wounding eight civilians. In Derhachi, another nearby town, 13 people were wounded in another aerial strike, authorities said.
Russia’s defense ministry said Thursday that its forces had taken control of the Donetsk settlement of Andriivka , which Ukrainian forces had held since grueling combat in September that left the village in ruins.
Elsewhere in Donetsk, Russian forces claimed advances in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar, Konstantinovka and Rozdolivka.
It was not possible to independently verify the claims. Recent Russian advances have been incremental.
Ukraine has also trained its sights on regions across the border in Russia.
Russia’s defense ministry said Thursday that 35 Ukrainian rockets and three drones were shot down over the Belgorod region. Regional Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said one drone struck a house and exploded after being shot down, killing a woman.
