If you are experiencing any issues with your submitting your assignment, check out our  Frequently asked questions .

Handing in assignments

Written assignments are mostly handed in online via your Canvas course site. How you hand in an assignment will depend on the assessment tool being used in your course.

How to submit a written assignment using the Canvas enhanced assignment tool

Most courses use the in-built Canvas assignment tool for written assignments.

  • Navigate to your assignment via the Assessment Overview button on the course home page or via the weekly Modules in the Course Navigation
  • Click the title of the assignment
  • Select a submission type, e.g.  Upload to upload a file from your computer (either via selecting the Choose a file to upload or dragging and dropping the file from your computer).
  • Once uploaded, your file will be saved as an assignment submission draft.
  • When you are ready to submit your assignment, click the Submit Assignment button

For further instructions, see How do I submit an online assignment? (Canvas Guides) .

Submitting your draft assessment

A submission point shows a number of allowed attempts to show how many submissions you can make. A submission with Allowed Attempts set to 1 only allows for a final submission. If the Allowed Attempts is set to 2 or more , the submission point allows for draft submissions.

Draft assessment items are submitted through the same submission point as the final submission using the same submission process.

How to submit a written assignment using Turnitin

Another commonly used assignment tool is Turnitin. The Assignment Dashboard (Turnitin Help) allows you to submit your assessment, view the Similarity Report (Turnitin Help) and access feedback after it has been marked. Further resources can be found at  Uploading a submission (Turnitin Help).

Changes to cover sheets in Canvas

From T3 2022, you will no longer need to include a cover sheet when you submit assessment through Learning@Griffith. The Academic Integrity Statement that was previously part of the cover sheet is now part of the Course Profile, outlined in section 3.3. This means that when you enrol in a course, you agree to comply with the University's Academic Integrity requirements.

At Griffith, we strive to support your development of professional and ethical decision-making capabilities, so you can get the most out of your learning experience at university and be successful in your future career. To help you succeed in your studies, there are a range of support resources and services available to you.

Find out more about these resources below and remember to reach out for the support you need at any time during the trimester.

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY POLICY LIBRARY

The Policy Library contains all approved University policies and procedures.

All policy documents in the Policy Library are governed by the Policy Governance Framework and have been categorised under the three headings of Academic, Governance and Operational. Our Framework reflects and embeds our values of fairness, equity, diversity and inclusion and provides a safe and supportive environment for all staff and students.

You can search for policies and procedures by using the text search bar at the top of this page or by clicking on one of the policy document categories below.

We have a range of resources to support the development, review and approval of policy documents.

Find out more

Operational

Operational policy documents relate to mandatory practice and decision-making principles for areas of University business and operations that do not fall within the definition of academic or governance.

Academic policy documents relate to the academic business of the University including all matters relating to teaching and learning, programs and courses, student administration and support, research and research training.

Governance policy documents are those for which the Council, and Committees of Council, are responsible as the governing authority (which have not otherwise been delegated) including all matters of which the Council cannot delegate its power under the Act. This covers the University’s strategic direction, budget, policies, delegations of authority and ensuring effective overall management of the University.

POLICY LIBRARY RESOURCES

Our policy documents are regularly reviewed, and sometimes new policy documents need to be developed. The following resources support Policy Advisors with review and development, as outlined in the Policy Governance Policy and Policy Governance Procedure.

IMPORTANT: Policy and Delegations Review Project

A major review of the University’s policy documents and delegations is currently underway as we transition to the Policy Governance Framework and the Delegations Framework.  As policy documents and delegations are reviewed, they will be:

  • Converted to new templates (existing policy documents will remain on the old template until the major review is complete).
  • Updated to reflect changes brought about by the R2S Program and the Chancellery Review unless immediate change is required for operational or compliance reasons.

Where position titles have changed, the equivalent new position will have the same accountability under the policy as the previous position did, until such time as the document is updated. For those instances where an equivalent position does not exist in the new structure, section 3.1 (c) of the Delegations Policy applies: ‘Authorities held by a delegate are included in those held by the delegate’s line manager, subject to any professional qualification requirements. The delegate’s line manager may exercise the delegated authority in the absence of the delegate, subject to compliance with legislation and University policy’.

If you have any queries or think that a policy requires urgent change for operational or compliance reasons, please contact the Policy Advisor listed on the policy document or send an enquiry to [email protected] .

On this page, creating assignments, assignment information, assignment files, availability.

To create a Blackboard assignment:

  • Navigate to the content folder you want the submission point to appear in
  • Hover over the Assignments tab toward the top of the area, then click Assignment

This will open the Create Assignment page where you can configure the settings as desired.

Configuring assignments

Blackboard assignments can be configured on the Create Assignment or Edit Assignment page. The Create Assignment page is accessed immediately after you create an assignment, while the Edit Assignment page can be accessed at any time after an assignment is created by clicking the chevron to the right of the assignment title, then clicking Edit .

The following sections walk through the settings on the Edit Assignment page and provide important notes and explanations of each, with important settings highlighted in bold text.

Draft assignments

Draft assignments are optional and provide students the opportunity to check the originality score of a paper prior to submitting the final version for marking. The following settings are recommended for Draft assignments, with  bold text referencing the most important settings to review.

  • This text will appear to students as the assignment link in the content area
  • It may be helpful to include the word 'DRAFT' somewhere in the title
  • Text written here will appear to students below the assignment link and any attached files
  • It may be helpful to advise students that papers submitted here will not be marked

In this section, you can optionally attach any files related to the assignment, such as assignment instructions, a marking criteria sheet, or exemplar assignments. However, it may be more beneficial to attach these files to a  Final assignment .

When enabled, a Due Date will cause any submissions made after the listed time to be marked as late on the Mark Attempt page. This is not usually required for Draft assignments but may be beneficial for Final assignments .

  • Enter zero in the Points Possible box
  • Rubrics may not be necessary for Draft assignments, but may be beneficial for  Final assignments .

Submission Details

  • Expand the Submission Details section
  • Select  Individual Submission for the Assignment Type setting
  • This allows students to make as many draft submissions as they like without the teaching team needing to intervene to allow further submissions
  • This will generate originality reports for student submissions, provided the uploaded files are under 10MB in size and adhere to the rest of  SafeAssign’s requirements .
  • This ensures students have access to view the originality reports generated for their draft submissions
  • This ensures draft submissions are not uploaded to the repository that future submissions are checked against for text-matching, which will prevent student submissions to Final assignments matching with their own Draft submissions

Marking Options

  • Expand the Marking Options section
  • Ensure Enable Anonymous Marking is unticked
  • Ensure Enable Delegated Marking is unticked

Display of Marks

  • Expand the Display of Marks section
  • Set the  Primary drop-down to Score for the  Display mark as  setting
  • Untick the  Include in Mark Centre marking calculations box
  • This provides students an additional way to access their Draft submissions

  • If this is not ticked, students will not be able to see the assignment link under any circumstances . Display After and Display Until dates, as well as Adaptive Release rules, can only take effect if this box is ticked.
  • If the boxes are ticked, the assignment link will only be visible to students during the specified window of time (provided the Make the Assignment Available box is ticked)
  • It is also possible to tick only one of these boxes. For example, if I want to hide the assignment link until June 12 at 9am but do not want the link to disappear after that, I can simply tick the Display After box and specify June 12 at 9am, then leave the Display Until box unticked
  • Time is in 24-hour format

Final assignments

Final assignments provide students a place to submit the final version of their assignment for marking. The following settings are recommended for Final assignments, with  bold text referencing the most important settings to review.

  • It may be helpful to include the word 'FINAL' somewhere in the title if you have also provided a Draft assignment

In this section, you can optionally attach any files related to the assignment, such as assignment instructions, a marking criteria sheet, exemplar assignments, etc. Files attached here will appear to students as links below the assignment link but above the assignment instructions

  • Browse Local Files allows you to select a file from your computer
  • Browse Content Collection allows you to select a file from your course’s Content Collection
  • Browse Cloud Service does not work correctly at this time and can be ignored
  • Amend the Link Title in the box provided if you want the file link text to appear differently than what is displayed under the File Name section

Enabling a Due Date will cause any submissions made after the listed time to be marked as late on the Mark Attempt page. Enabling a Due Date does not prevent students from making submissions after the listed time. Instead, the ability for a student to resubmit is controlled by the Number of Attempts setting further down the page). To enable a Due Date:

  • Tick the box
  • Click the calendar icon to select the desired date
  • Please note these options are in 24-hour format
  • You can also manually enter a time in the box in the format hh:mm

griffith assignment extension policy

  • This value should be the same as the Marked out of value for the assignment in the Course Profile. This is required to ensure assessment mapping is successful during the Grade Management process.
  • For information on how Rubrics can be utilised throughout the assignment process, visit Blackboard’s Rubrics support page.

  • The Individual Submission setting is appropriate for individual assessment items
  • The Group Submission setting is appropriate for group assessment items. If this option is selected, we recommend reviewing Blackboard’s Create Group Assignments support page to understand the process.
  • Single Attempt means students will only be able to submit one attempt. A member of the teaching team would need to ignore the original submission for any further submissions to be possible.
  • Multiple Submissions allows you to specify the maximum number of submissions allowed per student or group in the box provided. Once a student or group has reached the maximum number of submissions, a member of the teaching team would need to ignore one of the existing submissions for further submissions to be possible.
  • Unlimited Attempts allows students to make as many submissions as they like.
  • This will generate originality reports for student submissions, provided the uploaded files are under 10MB in size and adhere to the rest of SafeAssign’s requirements .
  • If originality reports are not needed, or submitted files will not adhere to SafeAssign’s requirements (e.g. video-only submissions), this box can be left unticked
  • This box is optional to tick for Final submission points. When ticked, students will be able to view originality reports for their Final submissions. When unticked, students will not be able to view originality reports. It is common to leave the box unticked if a Draft assignment has been made available to students, and to tick the box if a Draft assignment was not made available.
  • This ensures student submissions are uploaded to the repository that future submissions are checked against for text-matching

griffith assignment extension policy

  • Enabling Delegated Marking is not recommended as it adds unnecessary complexity to the marking process, thereby increasing the time required to complete marking and moderation. Due to a bug, it also causes problems with assessment mapping during the Grade Management process.
  • If marking has not started, it is fine to untick the box if it was ticked originally. However, if marking has already started, we do not recommend unticking this box as it can cause loss of marks and feedback. Contact the IT Service Centre for further information and assistance in this situation.
  • This ensures marks for the assignment are included in Total columns in Mark Centre (provided the Total columns are configured correctly)
  • This ensures marks and feedback remain hidden from students while marking and moderation are in progress

griffith assignment extension policy

  • If the boxes are ticked, the assignment link will only be visible to students during the specified window of time (provided the Make the Assignment Available box is ticked above)
  • It is also possible to tick only one of these boxes. For example, if you want to display the assignment link until June 12 at 9am but then want the link to disappear after that, I can simply tick the Display Until box and specify June 12 at 9am as the time and date, then leave the Display After box unticked
  • Untick the Track Number of Views box
