క్రేజీ స్టార్ విజయ్ దేవరకొండ పాన్ ఇండియా మూవీ ఆగస్ట్ 25న వరల్డ్ వైడ్ రిలీజ్ కాబోతుంటే… అతని తమ్ముడు ఆనంద్ మూవీ ‘హైవే’ అందుకు ఆరు రోజుల ముందు ఆహాలో స్ట్రీమింగ్ అయ్యింది. ‘దొరసాని’తో హీరోగా ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చిన ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ స్లో అండ్ స్టడీ తరహాలో ముందుకు సాగుతున్నాడు. ‘118’తో ఫస్ట్ టైమ్ తెలుగులో డైరెక్టర్ గా మారిన పాపులర్‌ సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ కె.వి. గుహాన్… ‘హైవే’ మూవీని రూపొందించాడు. మలయాళీ ముద్దుగుమ్మ మానసా రాధాకృష్ణన్ తో పాటు, బాలీవుడ్ నటుడు అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ ఈ సైకో థ్రిల్లర్ మూవీతో టాలీవుడ్ ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చారు.

కథగా చెప్పుకోవాలంటే.. చాలా సింపుల్. ఇదో ఇన్వెస్టిగేటివ్ థ్రిల్లర్ మూవీ. హైదరాబాద్ లో అమ్మాయిలను కిడ్నాప్‌ చేసి చంపేస్తున్న సీరియల్‌ సైకో కిల్లర్ ఆటను ఎఎస్పీతో పాటు ఓ సాధారణమైన వ్యక్తి ఎలా కట్టించాడన్నదే ఇందులోని మెయిన్ పాయింట్‌. ఒంటరిగా కనిపించే అందమైన అమ్మాయిలు కిడ్నాప్ చేసి, సిటీ అవుట్ కట్స్ కు తీసుకెళ్ళి చంపేస్తుంటాడు డి ఉరఫ్‌ దాస్ (అభిషేక్‌ బెనర్జీ). అతన్ని పట్టుకోవడానికి ఎఎస్పీ ఆశా భరత్‌ (సైయామీ ఖేర్‌) తన టీమ్‌తో రంగంలోకి దిగుతుంది. ఇదే సమయంలో విశాఖపట్నం నుండి బెంగళూర్‌కు తన స్నేహితుడితో కలిసి ఈవెంట్ కోసం బయలుదేరతాడు ఫోటోగ్రాఫర్ విష్ణు (ఆనంద్‌ దేవరకొండ). అతనికి దారిలో… మంగుళూరులోని తన తండ్రి దగ్గరకు బైలుదేరిన తులసి అనే అమాయకురాలు తారసపడుతుంది. ఆమెను మంగుళూరు బస్‌ ఎక్కించే బాధ్యతను తీసుకుంటాడు విష్ణు. కానీ మధ్యలో ఊహించని కారణాలతో ఆమె సైకో కిల్లర్ చేతికి చిక్కుతుంది. ఇటు ఎఎస్పీ తో పాటు అటు విష్ణు సైకో కిల్లర్‌ను ఛేజ్‌ చేయడం మొదలు పెడతారు. వాళ్ళు ఎలా అతన్ని పట్టుకున్నారు? ఈ సైకో కిల్లర్ వెనుక ఉన్న కథ ఏమిటనేదే మిగతా సినిమా.

మూవీ పేరుకు తగ్గట్టుగానే ఈ కథంతా ప్రధానంగా హై వే మీదనే సాగుతుంది. సైకోకి సంబంధించిన కథ హైదరాబాద్‌లో మొదలైతే, విష్ణు స్టోరీ వైజాగ్ లో స్టార్ట్ అవుతుంది. ఇక హీరోయిన్ తులసి కథ అమలాపురం దగ్గరుండే చిన్న గ్రామంలో! ఈ ముగ్గురూ హై వే మీద కలుసుకోవడం… విడిపోవడం అనే అంశాలు ఆసక్తికరంగానే ఉన్నాయి. ఈ జర్నీలో విష్ణు, తులసి మధ్య ఏర్పడిన చిన్నపాటి అనుబంధం, ఒకరిని ఒకరు వదులుకోలేని నిస్సహాయస్థితి, అంతలోనే ఊహించని ప్రమాదంలో తులసి ఇరుక్కోవడం… వంటి అంశాలను దర్శకుడు కన్వెన్సింగ్ గానే తీశాడు. కానీ ఇప్పటికే సీరియల్ సైకో కిల్లింగ్స్ నేపథ్యంలో చాలానే సినిమాలు, వెబ్ సీరిస్ లు వచ్చాయి. అందువల్ల కథలో కొత్తదనం ఏమీ ఫీల్‌ కాలేం. ఇక ఎఎస్పీ చేసే ఇన్వెస్టిగేషన్‌ కాస్తంత ఆసక్తికరంగానే ఉన్నా… సీట్‌ ఎడ్జ్‌లో కూర్చోపెట్టెంత గ్రిప్పింగ్‌గా మాత్రం కథనం లేదు. మరీ ముఖ్యంగా సైకో కిల్లర్‌ మోటివ్‌ మరీ తేలిపోయింది. అయితే… జనారణ్యంలోని మానవ మృగానికి అడవిలో ఎలాంటి శిక్ష పడిందనే అంశం కాస్తంత థ్రిల్లింగ్ గా అనిపిస్తుంది. ఈ సినిమాలో ఏదైనా కొత్తదనం ఉందంటే అదే!

నటుడిగా ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండలో మూవీ మూవీకీ ఇంప్రూవ్‌ మెంట్‌ కనిపిస్తోంది. నేచురల్ యాక్టింగ్‌ అతనిలోని ప్లస్‌ పాయింట్‌. బట్‌ మరికొంత మెచ్యూరిటీ రావాలి. బాల నటిగా చిత్రసీమలోకి అడుగుపెట్టిన మలయాళీ నటి మానసా రాధాకృష్ణన్ తన పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు బాగానే నటించింది. సాయిధరమ్‌ తేజ్ ‘రేయ్‌’ మూవీతో నటిగా కెరీర్‌ మొదలు పెట్టిన సైయామీ ఖేర్‌ గత యేడాది నాగార్జున ‘వైల్డ్ డాగ్’లో కీలక పాత్ర పోషించింది. ఇందులోనూ అదే తరహా పాత్రను చేసింది. ఆశా భరత్‌గా చక్కని నటన కనబరిచింది. టాలీవుడ్‌ వాళ్ళకు మరో బ్యూటీఫుల్ లేడీ పోలీస్ ఆఫీసర్ దొరికినట్టే. కానీ తమిళ నటుడు జాన్ విజయ్ ను దర్శకుడు పెద్దంతగా ఉపయోగించుకోలేదు. పలు హిందీ సినిమాలతో పాటు ‘మీర్జాపూర్‌’, ‘పాతాళ్‌ లోక్‌’ వంటి వెబ్ సీరిస్ లలో నటించి చక్కని గుర్తింపు తెచ్చుకున్న అభిషేక్‌ బెనర్జీ ఇందులో సైకో పాత్రను సమర్థవంతంగా పోషించాడు. ఇతర ప్రధాన పాత్రల్లో సత్య, తులసీరామ్‌, నాగమహేశ్‌, సురేఖా వాణి, ఆంటోని, మిర్చి కిరణ్‌, రేష్మ పసుపులేటి, కళ్యాణీ నటరాజన్‌, ‘రచ్చ’ రవి తదితరులు కనిపిస్తారు. ‘పూలరంగడు’ దర్శకుడు వీరభద్రమ్ చౌదరి ప్రీ క్లయిమాక్స్ లో గెస్ట్ అప్పీయరెన్స్ ఇచ్చారు.

కె.వి. గుహన్ తీసిన గత చిత్రం ‘డబ్ల్యూ డబ్ల్యూ డబ్ల్యూ’ కూడా ఓటీటీలోనే స్ట్రీమింగ్‌ అయ్యింది. మినిమమ్ బడ్జెట్‌లో, కాంపాక్ట్ క్రూ తో ఆయన సినిమాలు చేస్తున్నారు. ‘హైవే’ అదే కోవకు చెందిన సినిమా. బేసికల్ గా సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ అయిన కె.వి. గుహన్‌ ఆ శాఖను సమర్థవంతంగా నిర్వహించారు. ఆయన సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ ఈ మూవీకి మెయిన్ హైలైట్. అలానే సైమన్ కె కింగ్‌ బ్యాక్‌ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ మరో ప్లస్ పాయింట్. తమ్మిరాజు ఎడిటింగ్‌; మిర్చి కిరణ్‌, సాయికిరణ్ రాసిన సంభాషణలు ఓకే. ఇందులో ఉన్న రెండు నేపథ్య గీతాలను అనంత శ్రీరామ్, శ్రీమణి రాశారు. వాటి చిత్రీకరణ బాగుంది. వెంకట్ తాళ్ళూరి పరిమితమైన బడ్జెట్ లో మూవీ తీసినట్టు అర్థమైపోతోంది. ఆర్టిస్టుల పేర్లు టైటిల్స్ లో సరిగా మెన్షన్ చేయకపోవడం దారుణం. హాలీవుడ్ సినిమాలు, ఓటీటీల కారణంగా ఇవాళ థ్రిల్లర్ జానర్ మూవీస్ ను ఇష్టపడే వర్గమూ ఒకటి ప్రత్యేకంగా ఉంది. అలాంటి వారికి మాత్రమే ‘హై వే’ మూవీ నచ్చుతుంది.

లేటెస్ట్ గా ఓటిటి లో రిలీజ్ కి వచ్చిన మరో ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ చిత్రం “హై వే”. యంగ్ హీరో ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ అలాగే ప్రముఖ సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ టర్న్డ్ దర్శకుడు కే వి గుహన్ తెరకెక్కించిన ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ థ్రిల్లర్ ఇది. అయితే ఈ సినిమా మన తెలుగు స్ట్రీమింగ్ యాప్ ఆహా లో లేటెస్ట్ గా డైరెక్ట్ రిలీజ్ అయ్యింది. మరి ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందో సమీక్షలో తెలుసుకుందాం రండి.

ఇక కథలోకి వచ్చినట్టు అయితే.. విష్ణు(ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ) ఒక ఫోటోగ్రాఫర్ తన జాబ్ కోసం అని బెంగళూర్ కి స్టార్ట్ అవుతాడు. అలాగే మరోపక్క తులసి(మానస రాధాకృష్ణన్) తన తల్లితో ఓ పౌల్ట్రీ ఫామ్ లో పనిచేస్తుంది. కానీ అక్కడ తన ఓనర్ వేధింపులు చూడలేక అక్కడ నుంచి పారిపోతుంది.. మరి ఇదిలా ఉంటే మరో పక్క ఓ సీరియల్ కిల్లర్ డి అలియాస్ దాస్(అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ) వరుసగా 5 హత్యలు అందులోని ఆడవాళ్లనే చంపుతాడు. మరి దీనితో అతన్ని పట్టుకోవాలని పోలీసులు తీవ్రంగా గాలిస్తూ ఉంటారు. దీనితో అతడు వారి నుంచి తప్పించేకునే ప్రయత్నంలో అటు దాస్, తులసి లు ఇటు ఈ సైకో.. మరి ఈ ముగ్గురు ఎక్కడైనా ఎదురవుతారా? ఎదురయితే ఆ సైకో కిల్లర్ ఏం చేస్తాడు? ఇంతకీ పోలీసులు అతన్ని పట్టుకుంటారా లేదా అనేది తెలియాలి అంటే ఈ సినిమాని ఆహా లో చూడాల్సిందే.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ చిత్రంలో ఆకట్టుకునే అంశాలు చాలానే ఉంటాయని చెప్పొచ్చు.. సినిమా మెయిన్ గా మూడు ప్రధాన పాత్రల మీద నడుస్తుంది. హీరో హీరోయిన్ అలాగే కిల్లర్ పాత్రలు ఆధ్యంతం ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. వీటిని అయితే దర్శకుడు బాగా డిజైన్ చేశారు. అలాగే సినిమాలో స్టార్టింగ్ గాని విలన్ పాత్రకు సంబంధించి డెవలప్మెంట్ ఆసక్తిగా అనిపిస్తాయి. అంతే కాకుండా దానికి ఇచ్చిన ముగింపు అన్నీ కూడా బాగున్నాయి.

ఇక నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే మెయిన్ లీడ్ ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ అలాగే యంగ్ హీరోయిన్ మానస రాధా కృష్ణన్ ఆకట్టుకుంటారు. ఆనంద్ నుంచి తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చిన మరో సినిమా ఇది. తాను ఇంతకు ముందు చేసిన వాటికన్నా మంచి మెచ్యూర్ రోల్ లో తాను కనిపించి ఆకట్టుకుంటాడు. అలాగే మానస రాధాకృష్ణన్ పవన్ ఫ్యాన్స్ కి బాగా తెలిసి ఉండొచ్చు..

ఆ టైం లో పవన్ 28వ సినిమాకి అంటూ బజ్ తెచ్చుకున్న ఈ హీరోయిన్ ని ఈ సినిమాకి ఎంపిక చేయగా ఈమె ఈ సినిమాతో డెఫినెట్ గా ఆశ్చర్యపరుస్తుంది. తన క్యూట్ లుక్స్ సహా నటనతో కూడా ఆకట్టుకుంది. మరి నటుడు అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ అయితే తన సైకో పాత్రలో ఇంటెన్స్ పెర్ఫామెన్స్ ని చూపించాడు. తనదైన మ్యానరిజమ్స్.. నటనతో థ్రిల్ చేసాడు. ఇక సైయామి ఖేర్ తదితరులు సినిమాలో తమ పాత్రలకి బ్యాయం చేకూర్చారు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ సినిమాలో కొన్ని అంశాలు లాజికల్ గా బాగానే అనిపిస్తాయి కానీ కొన్ని సీన్స్ విషయంలో మాత్రం లాజిక్స్ మిస్ అవ్వడంతో మాత్రం అవి ఇరికించినట్టుగా అనిపిస్తుంది. అలాగే మంచి ఆసక్తిగా ఉండే సినిమాలో కథతో సాగే విధంగా పాటలు ఉంటే బాగుంటుంది కానీ కావాలని పాటల్ని పెడితే అవి ఏమాత్రం వర్కౌట్ కావు సరిగా ఈ సినిమాలో కూడా అదే జరిగింది.

అలాగే మరికొన్ని సన్నివేశాల్లో అయితే కథనం కాస్త నెమ్మదించినట్టుగా అనిపిస్తుంది. దీనితో బోర్ భావన కలగొచ్చు. అలాగే సినిమాలో కొన్ని సీన్స్ ని మరింత ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ మార్చే స్కోప్ ఉన్నా దర్శకుడు ఆ స్క్రీన్ స్పేస్ ని వినియోగించలేదు. అలాగే పలు చోట్ల గ్రాఫికల్ విజువల్స్ క్లియర్ గా తెలిసిపోతాయి..

సాంకేతిక వర్గం :

ఈ చిత్రంలో నిర్మాణ విలువలు డీసెంట్ గా ఉన్నాయని చెప్పొచ్చు. ఇక టెక్నీకల్ టీం లో అయితే సైమన్ కే ఇచ్చిన పాటలు పర్వాలేదు కానీ బ్యాక్గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ మాత్రం సినిమాకి తగ్గట్టుగా ఓ రేంజ్ లో అనిపిస్తుంది. అలాగే డైలాగ్స్ బాగున్నాయి. ఎడిటింగ్ పర్వాలేదు..

ఇక సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ మరియు దర్శకత్వం వహించిన కేవీ గుహన్ విషయానికి వస్తే…సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ తాను మంచి వర్క్ ని అందించాడు. ఇక దర్శకునిగా కూడా పర్వాలేదని చెప్పొచ్చు. మంచి థ్రిల్లింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ లాజిక్స్ తో పాత్రలను కలపడం, వాటికీ మంచి ముగింపు ఇవ్వడంతో ఇంప్రెస్ చేస్తాడు. కాకపోతే చిన్న చిన్న లోపాలు కూడా ఉన్నాయి. వాటిని సరి చేసుకుంటే ఇంకా బెటర్ నరేషన్ ని ఇవ్వగలడు.

ఇక మొత్తంగా చూసినట్టు అయితే ఈ “హై వే” చిత్రంలో ఆకట్టుకునే థ్రిల్లింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ అలాగే ప్రధాన పాత్రలకి మంచి లాజిక్స్ తో కూడిన స్టార్ట్ ఎండ్ ఉంటాయి. కాకపోతే దర్శకుడు కొన్ని చోట్ల మాత్రం కథనం నెమ్మదిగా నడపడం, మరికొన్ని చోట్ల చిన్నపాటి లాజిక్స్ మిస్సవ్వడం వంటివి ఫ్లో ని దెబ్బ తీస్తాయి. వీటిని పక్కన పెడితే ఓ డీసెంట్ థ్రిల్లర్ ని చూడాలి అనుకుంటే ఈ సినిమా తప్పకుండా చూడొచ్చు.

There is a scene in KV Guhan’s thriller Highway, where the serial killer D ( Abhishek Banerjee in his Tollywood debut) tapes his victim’s eyes open so that they can witness their own torture. Frankly, watching the film for two hours felt a lot like that--tortured, painful, and waiting for it to end. Highway is a simple film with a promising premise, which falters so badly in execution that you wonder how one can make such a lackluster film with a decent plot and good actors. Highway, set in the outskirts of Hyderabad, introduces us to photographer Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda), who is travelling to Bangalore for an event. Along the way, he helps a runaway teenager named Tulasi, who needs to get to her estranged father. A parallel track sees police officer Asha Bharath (Saiyami Kher) hunting a dangerous serial killer, who has killed five women and is on the hunt for more. How these two stories converge and Vishnu finds himself in a dangerous situation forms the crux of the film.

As I said, an interesting premise but it all goes downhill from here. The plot has more holes in it than a kitchen sieve, the acting is either monotonous or over-the-top (there’s no middle ground), and the background music is a serious assault on the senses. The comedy is so cringeworthy, sexist and forced that it often feels like you are watching something from the 90s.

It seems the makers and writers of the film have never met real people or observed how real people behave. Because in this film, everybody behaves as illogically as possible, as if it’s a stupidity contest. Cops can’t see an obvious clue dangling in front of their eyes, the killer tries his best to behave like a killer at every possible moment without any worry about getting caught, and women disregard safety while a serial killer is on the loose. I stopped noticing logical flaws halfway into the film because it was hard to keep up by then.

The film lacks finesse and subtlety, with every character repeating what is happening on the screen just so that the audience do not miss it. It is like hammering a nail that is already all the way inside the wall. It’s redundant and infuriating. But is there anything redeeming in Highway? Abhishek Banerjee, of course! The Pataal Lok-fame actor has been handed an undercooked and unidimensional character with no coherent back story and he still manages to do something special with it. He is menacing, scary, and at times, even fun to watch. Everyone else falls flat sadly. Saiyami Kher, normally a reliable performer, has been reduced to just standing at crime scenes exasperated. She and her character both deserve better. Anand Deverokonda is lackluster and frankly looks like a cardboard cutout at times. Manasa Radhakrishnan tries to play the part of a hapless, innocent teenager to the best of her abilities. But sadly, the script and direction do not help her much in the process.

Highway began streaming on Aha Telugu from Friday, August 19, and frankly it is a good choice that the film chose not to release in theatres. On OTT, it may find some audience. But it’s hard to see why anyone would voluntarily watch this film. It’s a cautionary tale on how not to approach an interesting subject. Watch it only if you are prepared to be disappointed in more ways than you can count.

'హైవే' పేరుతో థ్రిల్లర్ వస్తుందంటే సాధారణంగా ఎవరైనా రేసీగా సాగిపోయే సినిమా ఆశిస్తారు. అందుకు విరుద్ధంగా సాగుతుందీ 'హైవే'.

'హైవే'లో థ్రిల్స్ కంటే డ్రామా ఎక్కువైంది. అందువల్ల, ఎటువంటి ఉత్కంఠ లేకుండా చప్పగా సినిమా సాగింది. కథలో గానీ, కథనంలో గానీ నవ్యత లేదు. ప్రేమకథ హృదయాలను తాకే విధంగా ఉంటే... ఆ తర్వాత హీరో అన్వేషణ, కాపాడాలనే తాపత్రయాన్ని ప్రేక్షకులు అర్థం చేసుకుంటారు. అటువంటిది ఏదీ జరగలేదు. స్వతహాగా సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ కావడంతో కె.వి. గుహన్ ప్రతి ఫ్రేమ్‌ను అందంగా తీర్చిదిద్దారు. అయితే... సన్నివేశాలు ప్రేక్షకులకు కనెక్ట్ అయ్యేలా తీయడంలో ఫెయిల్ అయ్యారు. చివరి 20 నిమిషాలు బావుంది.

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారు? : సాధారణంగా ఇటువంటి థ్రిల్లర్స్‌లో నటీనటులకు పెర్ఫార్మన్స్ చేసే ఆస్కారం లభించదు. సన్నివేశాల్లో తీవ్రత ఆధారంగా ఉత్కంఠ పెరుగుతూ ఉంటుంది. ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు చేశారు. మానస రాధాకృష్ణన్ ముఖంలో అమాయకత్వం కనిపించింది. ఆమె పాత్రకు అది సూట్ అయ్యింది. సీరియల్ కిల్లర్ పాత్రలో అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ పర్వాలేదు. సయామీ ఖేర్ ఫిట్నెస్, పాత్రకు అవసరమైన శరీరాకృతి ఉండటంతో పోలీస్ రోల్‌లో ఆమెను తీసుకున్నట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. 'స్వామి రారా' సత్యకు పెద్దగా నవ్వించే అవకాశం లభించలేదు. రమ్య పసుపులేటి, మిగతా వాళ్ళ పాత్రలు అలా వచ్చి అలా వెళ్ళిపోతాయి.

ఫైనల్‌గా చెప్పేది ఏంటంటే? : 'హైవే' కాదిది... నార్మల్ రోడ్. ఆ రోడ్డులో బండికి బ్రేకులు పడ్డాయి. అనూహ్యమైన మలుపులు కానీ, ఆసక్తి కలిగించే సన్నివేశాలు కానీ ఎక్కువ లేవు. చివరి 20 నిమిషాలు ఆసక్తిగా సాగింది. హత్యలు చేయడానికి సైకో కిల్లర్ చెప్పే కారణం బలంగా ఉండటంతో పాటు కథనం ఉత్కంఠగా సాగి ఉంటే ఫలితం మరోలా ఉండేది ఏమో!? ఇప్పుడు అయితే ఈ 'హైవే'ప్రయాణం కట్టుకోవడం కష్టమే.

Highway Movie Review: Anand Deverakonda’s film is beyond redemption

Highway had the potential to be a dark and disturbing thriller but it ends up being a damp squib. the anand deverakonda film doesn’t have any redeeming qualities, says our review..

Vijay Deverekonda is arguably one of the most popular names in the Telugu film industry. The same, however, can’t be said about his brother Anand. While the young actor gave a glimpse of his abilities in Dorasaani and Middle Class Melodies, he isn’t regarded as an A-lister. Anand is now back with his latest film, Highway, which is out now on aha. The film, sadly, is a step in the wrong direction for the young actor. Highway had the potential to be a deeply unnerving thriller with a strong message, but it ends up being nothing more than a missed opportunity.

Highway revolves around Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda), a photographer who travels to Bengaluru with a close friend for an assignment. He faces an unexpected problem on his way. This forces him to spend some time at a dhaba, where he meets Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishnan), an innocent young woman with a tragic past. They soon cross paths with a serial killer (Abhishek Banerjee). Will they survive this potentially life-threatening situation?

The plot per se isn’t bad as it pretty much has everything right from a bit of violence to romantic sequences that one expects from a desi thriller. It, however, does not make any impact as the execution is as bland as it gets.

Highway begins with a scene in which Vishnu speaks about how a journey on a particular highway ruined three lives. This sequence, sadly, falls flat as it tries too hard to shock viewers. We are then subjected to a series of underwhelming scenes, which introduce us to the other characters. As a result, one isn't really able to relate to the plot.

However, Highway picks up a pace after Abhishek Banerjee’s entry. There are a couple of inherently disturbing scenes which cater to those familiar with slasher films. This, however, isn’t enough to salvage the film.

Generally, thrillers feature at least a couple of twists that add a new layer to the narrative. Take the Joju George-led Joseph, for instance. It featured a major reveal towards the end, which established the titular character as a braveheart. Highway, sadly, doesn't feature anything even remotely resembling a twist. Highway ends with a couple of rushed scenes, which feel forced and awkward.

Coming to performances, Anand Deverakonda rises above the half-baked script to shine in the romantic scenes. His sweet and shy expressions may vaguely remind people of Vijay Deverakonda from Geetha Govindam. This, however, doesn’t count for much, as the romantic subplot is undercooked.

Abhishek Banerjee is menacing in a few scenes, but Highway is hardly another Paatal Lok for him. He deserved a meatier character. Saiyami Kher, who plays a cop, is passable. She gets the body language right. Manasa Radhakrishnan is burdened with a one-dimensional character.

The songs are hummable but have limited recall value. The background score is commendable as it tries to add a sense of urgency to the narrative in a bid to save the film. The other technical aspects are up to the mark.

To sum up, Highway is the textbook definition of a shoddy thriller.

Story Review

The story is all about a psycho killer running loose on the highway and how cops try to save the people from him. Police Officer Asha Bharat (Siami Kher) takes up charge to nab the psycho killer D aka Das (Abhishek Bannerjee) as he wreaks fear among people by brutally killing women. Asha Bharat alerts all the people to be vigilant as she goes out to hunt him down.

Whether Asha is successful in her attempt and how photographer Vishnu (Anand Devarakondaa) and innocent girl Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishna) got affected and what is the relation between them form the thrills of Highway.

Artists, Technicians Review

The story of Highway is all about a psycho thriller and KV. Guhan tried to showcase the new avatar of Anand Devarakonda and pit him against the talented actor Abhishek Bannerjee. The idea of Guhan is right as he planned to show Anand Devarakonda in a different role. But there ends Guhan's tryst with creativity. The title Highway generated interest but he failed to generate the same interest with his story, screenplay, and direction.

Guhan's story turned out to be routine and predictable to the core. The film lacked the twists and turns to thrill the viewers. Even the two hours duration looked unending with insipid screenplay and direction. To top of it, even the performances of the actors and the technicians barring a few, turned out to be a disappointment.

Anand Devarakonda tried his best to take the film to next level with his performances but failed in his attempt. He failed to make the right impact on the viewers. Manasa Radhakrishnan came up with a singular expression to show fear and she did not get much opportunity to showcase her talent. Siami Kher is ok in her role as a cop but she did not look at ease while performing. Abhishek Bannerjee is known for his exceptional acting skills in Bollywood and serials but failed to recreate the same magic in his Tollywood debut project.

Simon King with his background music elevated the scenes to some extent. KV.Guhan's cinematography is good as it depicted the scenes in a natural manner. Tammiraju's editing left a lot to be desired.  There are many unwanted scenes in the film but he couldn't be faulted as the entire story turned out to be weak. Dialogues penned by Sai Kiran and Mirchi Kiran are just average. Production values are ok.

Guhan's Highway lacked novelty in the story and the screenplay. Everything turned out to be silly and the romantic angle is not highlighted properly so that viewers get connected emotionally. Overall the film failed to connect chords with the viewers. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 1 rating for Highway.

Highway Movie Review: A flat, downright boring ride

Allow me to drop a random architectural trivia. Australia's 141-kilometre-long Eyre Highway is one of the longest roads in the world. One of the perils of driving on this road is the possibility of accidents by driver fatigue. There are no twists, no turns, leaving drivers restless as they ride on and on without respite. In other words, you keep driving forward but there is barely a kick in the journey. Travel bloggers describe travelling on the road as “plain and boring”. That could double up as the review of this Highway as well. The bigger crime here is that there is a serial killer on the loose, hunting for his prey, but the film is pretty much like a drive on Eyre Highway. 

In Highway , Abhishek Banerjee plays a serial killer who tortures random young women to death. He tapes their eyelids open, forcing them to witness the brutality they are subjected to. As a night sequence played out, looking at the reflection of my face on the laptop screen, I empathised with the victim’s misery in their last moments. Abhishek, whose Hathoda Thyagi from Pataal Lok startles you, is reduced to a laughing stock in the film. He is the subject of this year’s most hilarious moment on screen, albeit unintentionally. Saiyami Kher (pulling off a reiteration of her character from last year’s Wild Dog) plays a cop on the trail to nab the killer; her urgency is barely registered, and at one point, the writing is so basic that you wonder how she landed in the position. Anand Deverakonda plays a photographer on his way from Vishakapatnam to Bengaluru to cover a wedding and Sathya plays his funny friend, who has a funny ringtone and talks funny because he is supposed to be funny; but he is not funny. What's funnier is the sad life of Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishna), who is the personification of every melodramatic cliche. Anand and Sathya's characters run into Tulasi in a scene that's so predictable that you see it coming when Anand starts from Vishakapatnam. After a series of boring and silly events, the serial killer enters into the mix, and the film gets louder; not interesting.

The problem with Highway is that it is just not thrilling. Perhaps it is Abhishek Banerjee’s horribly dubbed voice—the quintessential villain voice you hear in Telugu films—or Tulasi’s overly sentimental track that is purposefully written to wring out a feeling of sympathy. The sad life of Tulasi, in fact, works against the film. There is hardly anything palpable in the film; the danger when the killer prowls on the highway, the relief when a character escapes from his clutch, the suffering of the innocent victims, the sadness of the characters, or even the motivation of the killer—which is verbally spelt out in a primitive scene. None of them leave an impact. Even the sense of geography, the eponymous highway, is barely felt. 

Speaking of films about maniacs and desolated geographies, Krishna Vamsi’s Danger , Ram Gopal Varma’s Road , and even the recently released Tamil film, D Block , are way more successful in instilling a threat—by leveraging their respective settings—although they are not competent products of storytelling in their entirety. However, Highway has nothing redemptive about it. Part of it can be attributed to uninspiring writing, which barely builds the characters and the rest of it is the insignificant craft. While it is not technically blemished, the craft doesn’t uplift it either.

Highway is stale, boring, and unintentionally funny. Calling it a middling affair would be an act of over-selling the film. It is not even bad enough to have fun with and that, according to me, is the biggest crime a bad film can commit.

Review: ‘Highway’: Plot-holes make this Telugu movie a bumpy ride

People expect highway rides to be fast, racy, and smooth. But on screen, Telugu movie ‘Highway’, ace cinematographer KV Guhan’s third directorial venture in Telugu, suffers on all three fronts. Interesting in patches but largely predictable, ‘Highway’ could yet appeal to die-hard fans of the ‘cat and mouse’ type serial killer genre.

The movie’s basic premise is set around a serial woman-killer and a determined lady cop in Hyderabad. ‘Highway’ shifts scene when a young village lass lands in his clutches, with her new love hot on their tracks. Despite the initial promise of a taut thriller, ‘Highway’ ends up meandering along to a rather unbelievable ending.

Vishnu, a promising photographer in Vizag sets out on a wedding coverage assignment in Bengaluru. On the way, he and his friend come to the aid of Tulasi, a village belle from near Amalapuram, in search of her father in Mangaluru, Karnataka.

They promise to drop her off at Kalyandurg, from where she can take a bus to Mangalore. Although it confuses the mind as to why she can’t tag along with them till Bengaluru which is closer to her destination.

Parallelly, in the city of Hyderabad, female cop Asha Bharat is on the trail of a serial killer who keeps leaving cigarette butts and tyre tracks at the crime scenes.

Das, played by Abhishek Banerjee, is the smouldering villain, who keeps staking out potential victims, as he keeps cruising around in a beat-up ambulance van, right under the cops’ noses. All the while, the female cop keeps snarling and mouthing the b****** and f*** words to vent out her frustration and determination.

How Tulasi lands in Das’ clutches, Vishnu tracks her down, and finally rescues her, form the crux of ‘Highway’.

The cast comprising Anand Devarakonda, Manasa Radhakrishnan, Sayiami Kher and Abhishek Banerjee try their best to do justice to their roles.

Anand Devarakonda as Vishnu, and Manasa as Tulasi, appear naturally rigid and restrained as a young couple who are waking up to their mutual attraction.

Sayiami Kher is passable as the lady cop intent on catching the serial killer. Abhishek Banerjee, with a perpetual sneer writ on his face, is the bad guy in the movie which happens to be his Telugu debut.

The technical excellence that Director K.V. Guhan brings in with his cinematography, fails to lift up the weak story line.

There are instances where the director makes it too easy for the antagonist to kill and escape. Similarly, other inconsistencies in the storyline add to the overall inadequacies of the movie.

As can be expected, Guhan handles the camera with panache, while Simon King’s music score helps maintain the story tempo.

For thriller movie fans willing to overlook the details, ‘Highway’, despite the plot-holes, may still prove to be an interesting watch over the weekend. (IANS)

Anand Deverakonda’s Highway Telugu Movie Review & Ratings | Hit or Flop?

Highway Movie Review : With his debut movie ‘Dorasani’ Anand Deverakonda failed to impress the audience, but he was successful with his second film ‘Middle Class Melodies’ that released on digital platform directly. Pushpaka Vimanam which failed in theatres, was successful on OTT platform and that could be the reason actor chose direct to digital release for his new film ‘Highway’.

Highway is available for streaming on Aha OTT platform from today and let’s get into the detailed review of the movie, if it is worth watching our time.

A photographer by profession goes on a road trip and in the journey falls for a girl. At the same time a psychopath hunts down 5 women and leaves no clue to the Police department. The connection between these murderer and the photographer forms the rest of the story.

Cast & Crew

Highway movie stars Anand Deverakonda, Manasa Radhakrishnan in the leading roles, while Abhishek Banerjee, Saiyami Kher, John Vijay, Reshma Pasupuleti, Sathya are playing other important roles. Movie is written & directed by KV Guhan and produced by Venkat Talari. Simon K King composed the music and KV Guhan himself is the cinematographer. Movie is edited by Thammiraju.

Movie Verdict

Highway movie has some scenes that are interesting to watch in parts, but the overall making of the movie will definitely make you scratch your head. Movie looks so clueless with the narration and screenplay. Many scenes in the movie look very uninteresting and boring. Director have followed a way old formula in narrating a simple thriller. Climax of the movie also looks very unrealistic and routine to the core.

Anand Deverakonda has to improve a lot in terms of acting. He looks expression less in many of the scenes that needs the performance to elevate the situation. Saiyami Kher looks okay in the role of investigating officer. Abhishek Banerjee is only actor in the movie, who impresses with his performance and the actor slayed it in the negative role, though we have seen him in similar roles in Hindi. Satya tries to create fun needed in between and all other actors did their part well.

Technically movie looks okay. Background music composed by Simon K King adds the required mood for the film. Cinematography by KV Guhan looks okay, though the movie has some good locations that can be captured in a beautiful way. KV Guhan once again came up with a thriller story and failed to impress the audience with his making, just like his previous film ‘WWW’.

Finally, Highway is impressive in parts and keeps you intrigued.

Anand Deverakonda’s Highway Telugu Movie Review & Ratings | Hit or Flop?

Highway Movie Review: Anand Deverakonda’s first film, Dorasani, was a flop, but his second, Middle-Class Melodies, which was published only online, was a smashing hit. Since the actor’s previous film, Pushpaka Vimanam, bombed in theatres but did well on the OTT platform, this decision to release his next picture, Highway, only online via digital platforms is plausible.

Starting today, you can watch Highway on the Aha OTT platform, so let’s take a look at it and see if it’s worth your time.

A photographer by trade embarks on a road trip and, along the way, finds love. In the meantime, a psychopath is on the lookout for 5 ladies and leaving no traces for the police. The rest of the plot involves the relationship between the killers and the photographer.

Cast & Crew

Besides the two leads (Anand Deverakonda and Manasa Radhakrishnan), the film also features notable performances by Abhishek Banerjee, Saiyami Kher, John Vijay, Reshma Pasupuleti, and Sathya. KV Guhan wrote and directed the film, and Venkat Talari oversaw production. The film’s score was written by Simon K. King, and KV Guhan shot all of the footage himself. Thammiraju is the movie’s editor.

Movie Verdict

The plot of Highway gets interesting at times, but the film’s overall execution will leave you baffled. The film’s narrator and storyline both seem incredibly nave. Quite a few of the film’s sequences appear to be quite dull and lifeless. The director has resorted to a tired plot device to convey a standard thriller. The film’s climax is equally unbelievable and formulaic.

As an actor, Anand Deverakonda has a lot of room for growth. In numerous situations where his performance is essential, he appears emotionless. To my eyes, Saiyami Kher holds her own as the investigative officer. Though we have seen him in similar roles in Hindi, Abhishek Banerjee is the only actor in the film who impresses with his performance. Satya tries to inject much-needed comic relief, and the rest of the cast does a fine job.

The film holds up technically. The film’s atmosphere is perfectly set by Simon K. King’s score. Even though the film has several lovely potential locales, the cinematography by KV Guhan only looks so-so. Like his previous film, “WWW,” KV Guhan attempted a thriller with this one, but the audience was unimpressed.

At the end of the day, Highway has some great moments and manages to keep you interested throughout.

అలెక్స్ (విదార్థ్‌) ఓ బిజినెస్‌మెన్‌. హేమ‌తో (పూర్ణ‌) పెద్ద‌లు అత‌డి పెళ్లిని జ‌రిపిస్తారు. పెళ్లికిముందు నుంచే అలెక్స్ త‌న ఆఫీస్‌లోనే ప‌నిచేసే ప‌ర్స‌న‌ల్ అసిస్టెంట్ సోఫియాతో (శుభ‌శ్రీ) రిలేష‌న్‌షిప్‌లో ఉంటాడు. సోఫియా మాయ‌లో ప‌డి హేమ‌ను నిర్ల‌క్ష్యం చేస్తుంటాడు. ఓ రోజు అలెక్స్ కోసం లంచ్ తీసుకొని అత‌డి ఆఫీస్‌కు వ‌స్తుంది హేమ‌. అలెక్స్‌, సోఫియా ఆఫీస్‌లోనే రొమాన్స్ చేసుకుంటూ హేమ కంట‌ప‌డ‌తారు.

భ‌ర్త‌పై కోపంతో ఆఫీస్ నుంచి ఇంటికి వ‌స్తోన్న టైమ్‌లో ప‌ర‌ధ్యానంగా డ్రైవింగ్ చేస్తూ రోష‌న్ (త్రిగుణ్‌) అనే వ్య‌క్తికి యాక్సిడెంట్ చేస్తుంది హేమ‌. ఆ యాక్సిడెంట్ కార‌ణంగా హేమ‌, రోష‌న్ మ‌ధ్య ఏర్ప‌డిన ప‌రిచ‌యం స్నేహంగా మారుతుంది. గాయం నుంచి కోలుకునే వ‌ర‌కు రోష‌న్ బాగోగులు చూసుకుంటుంది హేమ‌. ఆమె ఫ్రెండ్‌షిప్‌ను రోష‌న్ ప్రేమ‌గా భావిస్తాడు.

అలెక్స్‌ను ప్రేమిస్తున్న‌ట్లు న‌టిస్తూనే మ‌రో వ్య‌క్తికి ద‌గ్గ‌ర‌వుతుంది సోఫియా. ఆమె మోసాన్ని క‌నిపెట్టిన అలెక్స్ సోఫియాకు బ్రేకప్ చెబుతాడు. హేమ ప్రేమ‌ను అర్థం చేసుకున్న అలెక్స్ ఆమెకు ద‌గ్గ‌ర అవుతాడు.

అలెక్స్‌, హేమ కాపురం స‌జావుగా సాగిపోతుండ‌గా వారి జీవితంలోకి రోష‌న్ వ‌స్తాడు. అలెక్స్‌ను చంపేస్తాడు? ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఏమైంది? హేమ ప్రేమ కోసం అలెక్స్‌ను హ‌త్య చేసిన రోష‌న్ ఆ త‌ర్వాత క‌నిపించ‌కుండా పోవ‌డానికి కార‌ణం ఏమిటి? వివాహేత‌ర సంబంధాలు ఈ ముగ్గురి జీవితాల్లో ఎలాంటి క‌ల్లోలాల్ని రేపాయి? దేవుడు రూపంలో ఉన్న మ‌నిషి స‌హాయంతో కాలంలో ముందుకు వ‌చ్చిన హేమ త‌న భ‌ర్త‌ను కాపాడుకుందా? లేదా? అన్న‌దే డెవిల్ మూవీ క‌థ‌.

చివ‌ర‌కు డివోష‌న‌ల్‌ ట్రైమ్ ట్రావెల్ ఎలిమెంట్‌తో సినిమాను ఎండ్ చేశాడు. సినిమా రిజ‌ల్ట్‌ను ప‌క్క‌న‌పెడితే గంట యాభై ఆరు నిమిషాల నిడివితో కూడిన సినిమాలో అన్ని జోన‌ర్స్ మిక్స్ చేసిన ద‌ర్శ‌కుడి టాలెంట్‌ను మాత్రం మెచ్చుకోవ‌చ్చు.

భార్యాభ‌ర్త‌ల మ‌ధ్య సంఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ చుట్టూ క‌థ‌ను అల్లుకున్నాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. కొన్ని ఊహించ‌ని ప‌రిచ‌యాలు, అనుబంధాలు జీవితంలో ఎలాంటి క‌ల్లోలాన్ని రేపుతాయి? భార్యాభ‌ర్త‌ల మ‌ధ్య స‌రైన స‌ఖ్య‌త లేక‌పోతే ఏం జ‌రుగుతుంది? వివాహేత‌ర సంబంధాల వెనుక‌ త‌ప్పు ఎవ‌రిది ఉంటుంద‌న్న‌ది డెవిల్ సినిమాలో చూపించాల‌ని ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు అనుకున్నాడు.

ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు క‌న్ఫ్యూజ‌న్‌...

ఈ పాయింట్‌ను చెప్ప‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు చాలా క‌న్ఫ్యూజ్ అయ్యాడు. రోష‌న్‌, హేమ ల‌వ్ స్టోరీ టీవీ సీరియ‌ల్‌ను త‌ల‌పిస్తుంది. అలెక్స్, సోఫియా ట్రాక్‌ను రొమాంటిక్ సీన్స్‌తో నింపేశారు. హార‌ర్ ఎలిమెంట్ వ‌ల్ల సినిమాకు ఎలాంటి ఉప‌యోగం లేదు. ఉన్న రెండు, మూడు హార‌ర్ సీన్స్ భ‌య‌పెట్ట‌లేక‌పోయాయి. క్లైమాక్స్ గురించి ఎంత త‌క్కువ చెప్పుకుంటే అంత మంచిది.సినిమాను ఎలా ఎండ్ చేయాలో తెలియ‌క టైమ్ లూప్‌ను వాడుకున్న ఫీలింగ్ క‌లుగుతుంది.

పూర్ణకు ఎక్కువ మార్కులు...

సాదాసీదా క‌థ‌కు న్యాయం చేయ‌డానికి పూర్ణ‌తో పాటు విదార్థ్‌, త్రిగుణ్ చాలా క‌ష్ట‌ప‌డ్డారు. యాక్టింగ్ ప‌రంగా పూర్ణ‌కే ఎక్కువ‌గా మార్కులు ప‌డ‌తాయి. భ‌ర్త ప్రేమ‌కు దూర‌మై మ‌రో యువ‌కుడి ద‌గ్గ‌రై ప్ర‌తి క్ష‌ణం మ‌ద‌న‌ప‌డే మ‌హిళ పాత్ర‌లో ఎమోష‌న‌ల్ యాక్టింగ్‌తో మెప్పించింది.

జోవియ‌ల్ లైఫ్‌స్టైల్‌కు అల‌వాటుప‌డిన మోడ్రన్ యువ‌కుడిగా త్రిగుణ్ న‌ట‌న ఒకే అనిపిస్తుంది. అలెక్స్ పాత్ర‌ల‌కు విదార్థ్ స‌రిగా సెట్ట‌వ్వ‌లేదు. శుభ‌శ్రీ అందాల ఆర‌బోత ఓ సెక్ష‌న్ ఆడియెన్స్‌ను మెప్పిస్తుంది. ఓ గెస్ట్ పాత్ర‌లో డైరెక్ట‌ర్ మిస్కిన్ క‌నిపించాడు.ఆర్ట్ ఫిలిమ్ ఫీల్ ఇవ్వ‌డానికి కెమెరామెన్ తెగ క‌ష్ట‌ప‌డ్డాడు. ఈ మూవీతోనే డైరెక్ట‌ర్ మిస్కిన్ సంగీత ద‌ర్శ‌కుడిగా కోలీవుడ్‌లోకి ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చాడు. సీన్‌కు సంబంధం లేకుండా అత‌డి బీజీఎమ్ సాగుతుంది.

పేరుకే హార‌ర్ మూవీ...

డెవిల్ పేరులో ఉన్న హార‌ర్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ మూవీలో క‌నిపించ‌దు. టాలెంటెడ్ ఆర్టిస్టులు ఉన్నా క‌థ‌, క‌థ‌నాల్లో మాత్రం కొత్త‌ద‌నం మిస్స‌యింది.
