Today, the world is embarking on a green transition. The shift towards an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world is critical not only for responding to the global climate crisis but also for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A successful transition towards a greener world will depend on the development of green skills in the population. Green skills are “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society”.

Green skills for youth: Towards a sustainable world

11 August 2023 - On 12 August, the world will observe International Youth Day. This day celebrates the contributions, ideas, energy and creativity of young people to foster positive change, not only for themselves, but also for their communities and the rest of the world. This year, on International Youth Day, UN DESA is highlighting the importance of green skills in building back better towards a more sustainable future.

Accelerating the shift towards an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world is critical not only for responding to the global climate crisis but also for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the minds of young people across the globe, a successful transition towards a greener world depends on the development of green skills, which are “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society”.

The pursuit of a greener and more just future requires urgent action. In a recent press conference, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that “It’s time to wake up and step up. It’s time to rebuild trust based on climate justice.  It’s time to accelerate the just transition to a green economy.”

Youth green skills are essential to a successful transition to the green economy. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), a green transition will result in the creation of 8.4 million jobs for young people by 2030. However, if current trends persist, by 2030 more than 60 percent of young people may lack the skills required to thrive in the green economy.

Young people need to be well-equipped with green skills so that they can better contribute to the transition to a greener future and successfully navigate this changing environment in the world of both work and life. Alarmingly, the necessary investment in skills development has been underestimated in the context of national commitments to implement major international climate agreements. Young people want to – and need to – act as catalytic agents in building a greener future. For that to happen, green skills need to be at the core of young people’s education, employment and everyday lives. This is why DESA elected to celebrate the 2023 International Youth Day under the theme  “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World”.

On International Youth Day 2023, UN DESA and its partners will offer a webinar gathering experts of all ages who will offer critical information and discussions on green skills for youth. Other tools such as a fact sheet and digital cards will be developed to share key insights into the theme and support stakeholders to celebrate International Youth Day 2023 in their various contexts and roles.

UN’s Joint Statement on International Youth Day 2023: Empowering Youth for the Future

The International Youth Day 2023 has been marked by the national theme: “Accelerating Recovery from COVID-19 and full implementation of the 2030 agenda; the role of youth” , where the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, the United Nations (UN) agencies and partners have come together to celebrate youth contributions to national development and to highlight issues related to youth and their wellbeing, their ambitions and aspirations that remain unmet.

Uganda’s significant youth population, comprising 76% under 30 years old, holds immense potential for development. Proper investments in education, health, and protection can harness this potential, while neglect can leave them vulnerable, impacting their well-being. Uganda’s adolescents and youth already face Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) challenges, which worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic that led to disrupted education, interruptions in access to SRHR  services and information, increased poverty, food insecurity, exposure to violence, abuse and exploitation.

It is crucial to capitalize on the potential of young Ugandans and to involve them in national and subnational planning and policy development from a demographic dividend, human rights and results based perspectives for the nation’s COVID-19 recovery. Their unique experiences, views and ideas can contribute to the national and international development goals.

Spanning from 6 August, the Youth Week has been a vibrant celebration in Uganda in observance of the International Youth Day. Notably, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, the National Youth Council and 13 UN agencies (FAO, ILO, IOM, UNAIDS, UNCDF, UNDP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNODC, UN Women and WHO) will be launching the UN Adolescent and Youth Joint Programme on 18 August, when the momentous commemoration ceremony is held.

The Programme, broadly aligned to the Global UN Youth Strategy and the national frameworks and policies, aims to address the barriers hindering youth potential. The focus areas are: sexual and reproductive health, inclusive quality education, skills and employment opportunities, climate action, and peace and security. With an approximate value of 22 million USD, the Programme covers 8 districts across 4 regions of Uganda for the 2023-2025 period, which is the first phase with roll-out to other districts.

In her remarks at the commemoration of the International Youth Day, Dr. Mary Otieno, UNFPA Uganda Country Representative, while speaking on behalf of the UN System in Uganda, called for both vision and action for the youth, noting, “Youth are the resource and backbone on which the country must rely on to advance sustainable development and to generate innovative solutions that will help the country achieve its development goals and reap the demographic dividend.”

“Together, we can ensure that the 2030 agenda and Uganda’s vision 2040 promote the human rights, health and well-being of the largest generation of young people in history,” Dr. Mary Otieno concluded.

Secretary-general's message on international youth day.

international youth day 2023 theme united nations essay

Every year, International Youth Day celebrates the determination, ideas and leadership of young people as we pursue a better world.

Across all of today’s challenges, young people are calling for bold and accelerated action, standing in solidarity with the most vulnerable, and designing solutions to ensure social, economic and climate justice, and peace and prosperity for all. To expand their participation, I recently launched a policy brief calling for governments to make youth participation the norm, rather than the exception, across decisions and policies around the world.

This year’s theme reminds us of the importance of ensuring young people gain and apply skills in the burgeoning green economy. From innovative sustainable technologies and renewable energy, to revolutions in transportation systems and industrial activity, young people must be equipped with skills and knowledge to shape a cleaner, greener, more climate resilient future.

Humanity depends on the boundless energy, ideas and contributions of youth everywhere. Today and every day, let’s support and stand with young people in shaping a just and sustainable world, for people and planet.

Concept Note

It’s been seven years since the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were introduced. The world has only 7 short years left to make the SDGs a reality by 2030. Young people today feel a sense of gridlock; that progress is lagging behind. There are 1.2 billion young people around the world who will bear the brunt of the burden if we don’t make progress towards building a better future. Global challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, conflicts, climate change, learning crisis and surging unemployment have drastically impeded development efforts and led to the rise of inequalities in all parts of life, everywhere. There is both urgency and an unprecedented opportunity to tackle the challenges during this pivotal mid-point.

The United Nations Secretary General, António Gueterres states that “humanity faces a stark and urgent choice: breakdown or breakthrough. The choices we make — or fail to make — today could result in further breakdown and a future of perpetual crises, or a breakthrough to a better future.” We must unite for global action to make a breakthrough in response to these challenges.

Our Common Agenda calls for renewal of solidarity particularly with younger generations, and the Youth 2030 Progress Report 2022 demonstrates how the UN system is working with governments in advancing global commitments for and with youth. This momentum should be accelerated to realize meaningful transformation for people and the planet before it’s too late.

The event will take forward national commitments and global initiatives, and step up public engagement in favour of education as the path to peace, sustainable development, and individual and collective well-being, while providing youth with a platform to present their initiatives and innovations to advance the right to education.

The event will also highlight one of the most challenging crises of our times, in Afghanistan where girls and women are deprived of their fundamental right to education. Since the political shift in Kabul in August 2021, access to education beyond primary level is indefinitely suspended for all Afghan girls above the age of 12. This means that 80% (2.5 million) of school-aged Afghan girls and young women are out of school, while nearly 30% of girls in Afghanistan have never entered primary education.

It will also include the launch of the first SDG4 benchmark publication by UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report and Institute for Statistics, which monitors country progress towards the benchmarks, including those discussed at the Transforming Education Summit.

This means that 80% (2.5 million) of school-aged Afghan girls and young women are out of school, while nearly 30% of girls in Afghanistan have never entered primary education. The recent unacceptable decision to suspend women’s access to universities, until further notice, has affected over 100,000 female students attending higher education institutions, jeopardizing the achievements made in the last twenty years. Prior to the recent suspension, one out of three young women were enrolled in universities. This panel will explore how the international community can support Afghan girls’ and women’s right to education through innovative and impactful solutions.
