Kanchana 3, the third part of the successful horror comedy franchise Kanchana, is carrying decent expectations among the public. Directed by choreographer turned filmmaker Lawrence, the film is out today. Let’s see wheater it lives up to its expectations or not.
Like earlier parts, Kanchana3 also deals with the story of a man called Kaali(Lawrence) and his girlfriend Lucy. As Kaali refuses to join hands with a corrupt politician called Shankar, he and his girlfriend are murdered mercilessly. Rest of the story how Kaali takes revenge on Shankar by getting into the body of Raghava(Lawrence).
Plus Points:
The film is completely Lawrence’s show as he carries the film on his shoulders by doing two roles superbly. His transformation scenes from Raghava to Kaali have come out well and Lawrence’s performance in these scenes was superb.
A few horror comedy elements in the first half of the film will evoke good laughs in the auditorium. A special mention about Kovai Sarala, Sriman and Devadarshini as their comedy track during the interval block was hilarious. Three girls Vedhika, Oviya and Nikki Tamboli have provided enough glamour show in their limited screen presence.
Minus Points:
Though Lawrence’s fresh idea in this sequel is decent, it was somewhere messed up in the proceedings. After an okay first half with nice horror and comedy elements, the narration in the latter half lacks a racy screenplay.
The flashback episode of Kaali is good but it is too lengthy. The emotional connect was also not showcased impactfully during the course of time. Most importantly, after the flashback is done, things are hurried up during the climax as the film is wrapped up without any engaging drama.
Technical Aspects:
Director Lawrence is good as an actor and choreographer but misses the target slightly when it comes to direction. His execution part is not so impressive and has many unnecessary scenes. If he would have written a better screenplay by keeping all the hype surrounded in mind, the result would have been much better.
Editing work is adequate as close to twenty minutes of the film can be chopped off easily. Cinematography is decent as the night effects are captured nicely. Music by Thaman is unbearable as none of the songs register. But his background score in impressive. Production values for this limited budget film are good.
On the whole, Kanchana3 is a typical horror comedy which has a few good horror elements in the first half. However, the second half goes down with a lengthy flashback episode and hurried climax. The film will find a mixed response from the A centers but as it is clearly aimed at the masses, they will like the film and will enjoy it as a package.

Kanchana 3 movie review: Raghava Lawrence's horror film has the same cliches that worked for its predecessors
In Kanchana 3, everything is loud (eardrum-splitting music), exaggerated and playing widely to the gallery.
Raghava Lawrence was Rajinikanth’s favourite choreographer in the late ’90s before he turned actor and director of mass commercials. Lawrence is the “moving spirit” behind south India’s biggest horror franchise, Kanchana. It is structured around his 2007 film Muni . Four year after Kanchana 2, which grossed over Rs 100 crore from domestic and international theatricals, Lawrence is back with Kanchana 3 (also called Muni 4 ) in Tamil and Telugu.
Lawrence is, in a way, the father of horror comedy, Kollywood’s most popular genre which works well with mass audiences. He follows the pattern of a horror specialist of the 1970s and ’80s, Vitalacharya, who ruled the box office. Kanchana 3 is a template Lawrence horror comedy and is largely targeted at family audiences. Yes, Lawrence’s Kanchana series has a huge fan base among ladies and kids. These films even have a U/A certificate despite the horror and violence.
The story is virtually the same in all the films in the series. It is about how hero Raghava (Lawrence), a nice friendly neighbourhood guy who plays with kids, is scared of ghost stories. He needs his mother (Kovai Sarala) by his side most of the time to tackle any spooky situation that he comes across. Once again, Raghava gets possessed (like in the first two parts) by a ‘ghost’, who uses his body to take revenge on villains. The regular set of comic actors, who play his mother, elder brother (Sreeman) and sister-in-law (Devadarshini), are there along with three skimpy dressed glamour girls (Vedhika, Oviya and Nikita), who come as his relatives and prospective brides, trying to woo him.
Lawrence plays a dual role as the nice guy Raghava, who is scared of ghosts, and Kaali, a tough guy who is a philanthropist and runs an orphanage (In real life, Lawrence is known for his philanthropist activities, including running an orphanage for children). Kaali runs afoul of a minister and his brother (Kabir Duhan Singh), who wants to use the Ashram to launder their black money. When he protests, all hell breaks through.
In the nearly three-hour film, everything is loud (eardrum-splitting music), exaggerated and playing widely to the gallery. There are also crass jokes and gimmicks along with three girls who go to great lengths to woo the hero. Add to that creaky doors, rocking chairs, exorcism scenes (including exorcists from Russia!), rituals to ward off the evil, and some characters getting possessed in a funny manner. Plus the mandatory “Amma” sentiments and a so-called social message. There are also a few songs (composed by different music directors) and some deadly CGI fight scenes in the climax to complete the formula
Critics can go take a walk, as proved by the audience’s (mostly families) reaction to Kanchana 3 at the theatre where I watched the film. There was loud whistling and clapping as Lawrence and his screen mother Kovai Sarala brought the house down with their antics. It is aptly summed up by the character Kaali’s punchline to the villain: “ Nee mass aana, naan double mass!” (If you are mass, I am double mass). The only question that remains is whether Kanchana 3 will join the Rs 100 crore club as well.

Kanchana 3 movie review: ‘Amma’ sentiments, exorcism scenes and everything in between
Kanchana 3 movie review: kanchana 3 is a frustratingly cringe-worthy piece of work masquerading as “horror comedy” that makes you squirm. beware, this is a fine example of how sequels shouldn’t be made..
Kanchana 3 movie cast: Raghava Lawrence, Kovai Sarala, Devadarshini, Oviya, Vedhika Kanchana 3 movie director: Raghava Lawrence Kanchana 3 movie rating: 1.5 stars
I think the B and C audience really like Raghava Lawrence. Or else, they won’t hoot and whistle for everything this guy does. In Kanchana 3, Raghava plays the same man, who is afraid of ghosts. The moment he senses some paranormal activity, he needs his mother (Sarala) around—all the time—even when he pees. Also, like a monkey, he would climb on to his mother’s hip because he is “scared”.
This time, Raghava has “fun with” three “figures” (that’s how they are referred to) Vedhika, Oviya and Nikki Tamboli, as they generously flaunt their waist and butt (partially covered) throughout the film.
We have Devadarshini, whose head “accidentally bangs” at Raghava’s crotch when she falls at his feet. I don’t understand how the men in the theatre were laughing at this particular scene. Additionally, there is Sriman, who wants to be funny.
Like any other ghost in horror films, the ghost in Kanchana 3 has a back story— about how it came into being and why it takes revenge on someone. Sigh. Suddenly, you get introduced to white-eyed ghosts (the one you see in Conjuring-kind of films) and creepy dolls. Be prepared, okay?
Raghava, of course, is seen in an action avatar with another role Kaali (similar to his real-life persona), who runs an orphanage. Naturally, you won’t be surprised when he dances to the lines, “Ketta paiyyan sir indha Kaali”. The actor-choreographer-director is a self-confessed fan of Rajinikanth . So, those obvious references are hard to miss.
Before I wind up this, oh, there is Soori, who wants to become an “upcoming rowdy”. Nobody knows what happens to him because he vanishes in the blink of an eye.
I am not revealing anything further because I believe it is going to ruin this ambitious film. (Pun-intended) Overall, Kanchana 3 is a frustratingly cringe-worthy piece of work masquerading as “horror comedy” that makes you squirm. Beware, this is a fine example of how sequels shouldn’t be made. It is high time Raghava Lawrence stopped making ill-conceived and badly-executed sequels.
BAM. Get ready, people. Kanchana 4 is arriving.

Kanchana 3 Review
Kanchana 3 Review, What’s Behind?
Kanchana 3 is third installment of Kanchana series and fourth in Muni series. There are obviously decent to good expectations on the film as earlier parts stood commercially entertaining hits. Will Lawrence succeed in making Kanchana 3 one more hit in the horror comedy stream?
Kanchana 3 Story Review:
Raghava (Lawrence) once again plays the same timid youngster, follows strange techniques to come out of his freight for paranormal powers. Along with family members, he visits grandfather’s village where enjoys with three maradallu (Oviya, Vedhika and Nikki Tamboli). However, Raghava is now possessed by two ghosts as they are striving to take revenge against a powerful politician. Who these ghosts are? What’s their story? Whom they want to take revenge on?
Kanchana 3 Artists, Technicians Review:
This film too followed the usual template of horror comedy themes. Story is dated and there’s no freshness in screenplay as well. However, the film has more elements for masses like the previous. Lawrence should stop repeating the same loop because excitement goes down when script misses much needed freshness and narration becomes dumb orienting on the same final goal of revenge. Instead, Kanchana 3 is definitely not on par with past films in same series.
Vetri’s camera work is neat and Thaman’s background score provides thrills required for the horror scenes. None of the songs are catchy but Lawrence typically shines with trademark steps in all the numbers. Editing is sloppy. Kanchana 3 is an advanced version of the first two parts in terms of budget, grandeur and the overall production value.
Onto performances, Lawrence amazes as the innocent Raghava. As Kaali, he puts on the mass hero hat along with the mask of Messiah. He also shines with the ease, flexibility to change expressions both as Kaali and foreign girl. Kovai Sarala, Sriman and Devadarshini combo too provides some comic relief, of course so loud. Three heroines- Vedhika, Oviya and Nikki Tamboli have been used only for skin show. Other artists were okay.
Kanchana 3 Review Advantages:
Heroines Glamour
Few Comedy Bits
Kanchana 3 Review Drawbacks:
Dated Story
Zero Freshness
Second Half
Kanchana 3 Review, Rating Analysis:
Kanchana is a successful franchise from Raghava Lawrence. He tried hard to retain all the commercial ingredients which worked at target audience. Despite all the attempts, film fell back on nose for depriving novelty and bland treatment. Time for Raghava to borrow some new components if really wants to continue the same franchise for more.
First half an hour is customary with Raghava’s acts, coming up with eccentric methods to come out of his fear for supernatural powers and troubles his family members- mom, brother and sister-in-law in the course of action. Focus shifts to village and the romantic fragrance of Oviya, Vedhika and Nikki Tamboli is a mass feast. Horror elements from here are déjà vu. Interval episode is designed to reveal a twist where Raghava is possessed not by one but two ghosts.
Latter half too begins on sluggish note with flashback of Kaali. Lawrence mirrored his real-life philanthropist image in this flashback, a bit lengthy and lacked emotional quotient owing to mediocre writing and direction. However, things are rushed up in last portions and these too are loud with acceptable CG work.
All in all, Kanchana 3 is not up to the mark in comparison to previous installments. Except Lawrence’s acting, dances and heroines glamour quotient, the film offers no thrills and frills, one would generally expect from Kanchana series. CJ goes with 2.25 star rating and the film may partly work in B, C centers and definitely not a cup for multiplex audience.

'Kanchana-3', starring Ragava Lawrence in the lead, hit the screens this Friday. Let's find out what works and what doesn't for this horror-action-comedy.
Like most horror flicks, 'Kanchana-3' follows a familiar story point. The hero (Ragava Lawrence) lives with his family (comprising of Kovai Sarala and others). They move to a lonesome bungalow, which is apparently haunted.
A few sessions of scare fests later, we are told a flashback in which Kalki (Lawrence, again) is introduced. A do-gooder, he is actually much like the real-life Lawrence.
Saying anything more about the flashback will ruin whatever little interest you may have in the movie. The plot is that predictable.
The writer and director Ragava Lawrence has a strong Kanchana/Muni hangover. From great to good to boring, the talented choreographer-turned-director has done it all by squeezing the genre way too much.
All the usual elements are there dutifully in 'Kanchana-3'. Kovai Sarala reduces her volume, and quirky acting. However, our Lawrence doesn't. There are not one but three skimpily-clad women wooing him. Our hero has this habit of jumping and sitting on their hips like a child.
If you like the kind of comedy described above, 'Kanchana-3' will partially entertain you in the first half. The second half follows a very boring template. A flashback that is high on a kind-hearted character, his innocuous girlfriend, a ruthless villain, etc. We have seen enough of such ingredients in dozens and dozens of films just since Vijay Mallya ran away from the country, not to speak of the number of films since Dawood Ibrahim ran away.
We fail to understand why the three glamorous ladies (Oviya, Vedhika, and Nikki Tamboli) are attracted to the hero all at once. Yes, it's a Kollywood-flavoured comedy but then there has to be some explanation, in the case of at least one girl?
After a point, the gory violence and the lifeless dialogues become too much to digest. To add to the woes, the second half goes overboard with pointless songs. Thaman's music just doesn't add value. Even if it did, the net value would still be negative.
Vetri's cinematography is very ordinary, and the special effects are inconsistent.
To talk about the performances, Lawrence is at his usual self. Somehow, he is lovable most of the times. Probably because we love all his off-screen image a lot. The heroines and the villains are forgettable but some side characters make a mark.
Bottom line:
'Kanchana-3' suffers from outdated ideas and templates. A mediocre attempt that just doesn't get anything in right measure. Some comedy scenes work. The film has a heavy hangover effect.

Kanchana 3 Review - A film strictly catering to 'Kanchana' fans!
Published date : 19/apr/2019.
A film strictly catering to 'Kanchana' fans!
Raghava Lawrence’s next installment in the Kanchana series is the much hyped horror film Kanchana 3 written and directed by Lawrence himself. Also starring the ensemble cast of Kovai Sarala, Sriman, Devadarshini and Soori, this part has 3 female leads that include the talented actress Vedhika, Bigg Boss fame Oviya and Nikki Tamboli. Does this mass masala commercial horror flick entertain like its previous parts? Read further to know.
Kanchana 3 starts off with a series of murders executed by the protagonist Raghava, just like in many other commercial films and we are introduced to the lead character who sports a different tonsured getup. Just when we wonder why he goes on to murder these many goons, there opens a flashback which has all the characters that we have named above and a sequence of comedy scenes follow. These comedy portions would work among the usual Kanchana series fans and this is no big surprise.
Apart from these humour based scenes, we have very few horror scenes that are genuinely spooky. The others are very predictable and fall flat especially due to the number of horror films that we have seen in the last few years. The characters chosen to bust away the ghosts are unique, be it the Aghori or the impressive couple of foreigners who look spooky themselves. A little more detailing to this would have spiced up things a little more.
As for the performances, Raghava Lawrence is comfortable playing his usual self and the humour along with horror quotients are tapped well by the usual Kanchana horror-comedy department. But the new additions such as Oviya, Nikki and the potential actress Vedhika don’t seem to have any importance with regards to the story. In fact, there is the usual objectification of women that we don’t wish to see anymore in Tamil cinema. This could have easily been avoided and the fact that all 3 actresses’ are desperate to impress Raghava’s character seems so absurd. Also, the music sure didn’t work in Kanchana 3 as none of the commercial numbers were enjoyable and proved to test the patience of the audiences.
Sriman, Kovai Sarala and Devadarshini do a neat job with their comedy in the first half and this is easily the saving grace of the film. The second half is a tedious watch as there is no humour for relief, nor is there any such genuinely scary moment. It is quite clear that the spirit is going to seek revenge against the villain for being killed in the past and there is no real suspense about it. The lack of an interesting screenplay and sharp sequences make it a boring latter half except for the other flashback that seems to have a good intention. The intention of trying to save the poor from being hungry is a beaten concept in Tamil films but it would still work among those who like scenes driven by the mass sentiment. Kanchana 3 is clearly not that weekend film for those expecting an intelligent horror film which might offer lot of high points and edge of the seat moments.
Cinematography is just about alright and the edit by Ruben one might think could have been crisper. However, it would be easy to say that, to keep this sort of a duration would have been a conscious decision by the makers for its target audiences. The climax was shot in a graveyard and just like in Kanchana 2, there is a loud fight sequence that lasts for nearly 15 minutes at the fag end. Thaman S’s signature Kanchana theme music is such a relief and his score is not bad at all.
With a few laughs here and there and even fewer scary moments, the majority audiences might not enjoy Kanchana 3 as much as they enjoyed the previous parts. The songs not working among audiences is a major minus and so is the tediously long second half. If there were major changes made to this half, it could have been a more entertaining watch for its fans. Nevertheless, a section of the Kanchana fans would still find some fun in this ‘not so fresh’ horror comedy that has barely anything to offer. The brand ‘Kanchana’ might just save this ordinary popcorn flick but it is quite obvious that the forthcoming sequels would require more content and engagement.
A tedious watch with very few laughs and even fewer thrills.

KANCHANA 3 MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE
Raghava Lawrence can be considered as one of the pioneers of Tamil Horror comedy films. His Muni-2: Kanchana had set the benchmark for many horror comedy films that followed, like Darling, Aranmanai, Dhillukku Dhuddu and so on. But, how long can we watch a film that is set on the same tropes as Kanchana? It was a blockbuster back in 2015, but how is it now, after 4 years?
Kanchana 3 does start on an energetic note, with everything happening at a brisk pace. Raghava Lawrence sets up a showdown with Kabir Singh Duhan within the first 15 minutes of the film. There is slight humour sprinkled by Soori, that partially works.
Kanchana 3 has a lot of scenes to remind you of what Raghava Lawrence did in the earlier films, but somehow the characters of the film seem to have selective amnesia when it comes to remembering the horror scenes. A terrific Kovai Sarala remembers that Raghava Lawrence climbs onto her hips whenever he is scared but doesn't recollect that there were ghosts in the previous films too. Kovai Sarala, Sriman, and Devadarshini who are regulars in Kanchana Franchise have delivered what is expected out of them and won't disappoint the Kanchana fans with their humorous scenes. While logical loopholes can be ignored in a commercial entertainer, it is quite difficult to pack your brains in a box.
The first half is better engaging due to the template of comedy and horror being in sync with each other and a thrilling interval block, but from then on, the graph goes down exponentially, and even the commercial elements start lacking the punch required. Raghava Lawrence's dance steps are out of the world, but the songs don't quite fit the genre. There is a mildly rousing stunt sequence before the climax where our hero is fighting against 100 people, but all of a sudden, the film goes into fast-forward mode and all the hundred people fall. This is supposed to be the set-up for the climax fight, but when the setup is hurried, there isn't any pay-off.
The film has 3 heroines in the form of Oviya, Vedhika and Nikki Tamboli, when only one could have done the job. All three have been objectified, and have no other role than seducing Raghava in turns. Either Raghava jumps on to their hips or they jump on to Raghava's hips, which is what they do in the entire film. Delhi Ganesh showcases his acting prowess wherever possible. However, he seems to be wasted in a role that does not have much depth.
Raghava (who is also the writer and director) has tried to infuse some humour in the portions consisting of the family members, that only becomes repetitive and force-fitted after a point. The emotional connection between them is also lacking, due to which we cannot empathize with whatever is happening. The only way we see the family bonding is when someone sees the ghost in the house, and screams at the top of their voice and the whole family rushes down to ask what happened. And this screaming takes places almost every day and night.
The horror portions are filled with jump scares and loud screams. If you are someone who wants to feel your heart coming out of your mouth, it does the job. But even for the faint-hearted, who close their eyes when the ghost comes on-screen, the scenes still leave you startled. This is because of the sound effects used.
Another letdown with Kanchana 3 is the predictability. It has the usually isolated bungalow, that has a ghost. The ghost narrates it's a flashback to the members of the house so that they sympathise with him, and grant permission to enter the protagonist's body and exact revenge for the misery it underwent. In short Kanchana 3 becomes a victim of the stereotypes created by the earlier horror-comedy films, but the fans of the franchise might not complain much. Critics might not appreciate it, but moments in the first half will make the general audience and horror fans not complaint about Kanchana-3.

Kanchana 3 Review: Two Ghosts This Time
Movie: Kanchana 3 Rating: 2/5 Banner: Raghavendra Production Cast: Raghava Lawrence, Oviya, Vedika, Niki Tamboli, Soori, Kovai Sarala, Devadarshini, Sriman and others Cinematography: Vetri & Sarvesh Murarri Music: Thaman S S Editor: Ruben Producer: Raghava Lawrence Director: Raghava Lawrence Release date: April 19, 2019
Raghava Lawrence's “Kanchana 3” is awaited with much interest as all its prequels were blockbusters.
Let’s find out how this film has fared up.
Story: Raghava (Raghava Lawrence) who is scared of ghosts lands to his ancestral village and the house is possessed by a ghost named Kaali. Who is Kaali? What is his story? What is this ghost's connection with Raghava forms the rest of the story.
Artistes’ Performances: Raghava Lawrence has done it in his usual style. Kaali, the second role that he has played is exactly like his real life image –a guy who does charity.
Kovai Sarala provides some comedy. Sreeman and Divyadarshini are okay. Vedhika, Oviya and Niki have competed with each other in showing off their skin.
Technical Excellence: The film has rich production values and rich camera work. Music is not up to the mark. Rest of the technical values are decent.
Highlights: Some jokes Bearable first half
Drawback: Clichéd moments Boring second half No logic No sensibilities Loud comedy
Analysis Raghava Lawrence has successfully created super fan following to “Kanchana” or “Muni” franchise. This is the fourth film in this series. If you watch any one of the movie in this franchise, you can easily guess what happens in the other movies. Such a template he has created for this horror-comedy series.
The template goes like this: to take vengeance a ghost comes into the body of the hero and this situation leads to some comedy sequences, and a flashback gets opened to reveal the story of ghost. “Kanchana 2” has followed the same template. The only difference is this time two ghosts appear instead of one.
The film opens in predictable way and provides some laughs here and there and some glamour show by heroines.
Despite formulaic narration and clichéd sequences, the first half is not that bad. It is the later portions that tests the patience. Lawrence in his usual style of loud acting and garish direction makes it too hard to digest.
His movies are aimed for mass audiences. You don’t find any sensible moments. It is too bland.
Those who don't mind cheap thrills, want to watch glamour show from three heroines may find this an okay horror comedy. But for others, it doesn’t entertain. The comedy is not at all on par with ‘Kanchana’, the earlier movie in this series.
Bottom-line: Sequel Horror

M Suganth, Apr 19, 2019, 10.21 AM IST Critic's Rating: 2.0/5. Kanchana 3 Movie Synopsis: A young man who gets easily scared is possessed by a ghost that is seeking revenge. Kanchana 3 Movie Review ...
But his background score in impressive. Production values for this limited budget film are good. Verdict: On the whole, Kanchana3 is a typical horror comedy which has a few good horror elements in the first half. However, the second half goes down with a lengthy flashback episode and hurried climax.
Lawrence is the "moving spirit" behind south India's biggest horror franchise, Kanchana. It is structured around his 2007 film Muni. Four year after Kanchana 2, which grossed over Rs 100 crore from domestic and international theatricals, Lawrence is back with Kanchana 3 (also called Muni 4) in Tamil and Telugu.
To some viewers, the scares on screen may be redundant. The very existence of Kanchana 3 (or Muni 4, depending on how you look at it) — with a high-pitched Kovai Sarala screaming above the pounding drums in the background score — may be cause enough for stomach-churning dread. But at least with this franchise, writer-director Ragava Lawrence has a loyal fan base — so all complaints from ...

'Kanchana-3', starring Ragava Lawrence in the lead, hit the screens this Friday. Let's find out what works and what doesn't for this horror-action-comedy. Story: Like most horror flicks, 'Kanchana-3' follows a familiar story point. The hero (Ragava Lawrence) lives with his family (comprising of Kovai Sarala and others). They move to a lonesome bungalow, which is apparently haunted.
