Squarespace Commerce Advanced costs almost double what Commerce Basic does. If you want to sell subscriptions, however, upgrading might be worth it — a handful of subscriptions may well make up the difference.

However, the price difference between Squarespace Business and Commerce Basic is so small — just $4 per month on the annual payment plan — that most businesses will likely be better off upgrading to Commerce Basic to avoid the extra transaction fees on Business.

Squarespace Personal: Best for personal websites or portfolios

You can’t use Squarespace Personal to take online payments. With this plan, however, you can still build a website — and free domain registration for a year is included if you pay for one year upfront. You’ll be able to see basic website metrics, like how many people are visiting your website and what keywords they’re typing into search engines to find you, and up to two contributors can have logins to your site.

If you primarily use your website to showcase your work and advertise your services to clients, Squarespace Personal may be sufficient for your needs. But to accept payments on your website, you’ll have to upgrade to at least Squarespace Business.

Cost: $16 per month with annual subscription or $23 month to month. No transaction fees because online sales are not available.

Domain registration

Squarespace offers one year of free domain registration when you buy an annual plan. After that, you’ll pay between $20 and $70 per year to register your domain with one of two web hosting services, Squarespace Domains LLC or Tucows. Prices vary based on your site’s top-level domain, e.g., whether it’s a “.com” or “.xyz.”

You can register multiple domains and transfer them to other hosts if necessary. And Squarespace-hosted domains generate SSL certificates, an important security measure for your site visitors.

Squarespace Scheduling

Squarespace Scheduling is software that you can use to take appointments. Through Scheduling, you can collect clients’ intake forms and send them reminders. Your customers can pay for your services and buy packages or subscriptions. Your staff can establish their hours and sync appointments to their calendars.

Squarespace Scheduling plans include:

Emerging: $16 per month when billed annually or $20 month to month. Includes one calendar, invoicing, automatic reminder emails and your choice of several payment processors.

Growing: $27 per month when billed annually or $34 month to month. Includes Emerging features plus gift certificates, memberships and passes and SMS reminder messages. You can create up to six calendars for multiple employees and locations.

Powerhouse: $49 per month when billed annually or $61 month to month. Includes Emerging and Growing features plus HIPAA compliance features, calendars in multiple time zones and more ability to customize the look and feel of your scheduling site. You can create up to 36 calendars total for multiple employees and locations.

You can use Squarespace Scheduling alongside any website — it doesn’t have to be built on Squarespace — or just use Scheduling by itself without a full website.

Member Areas

These are gated areas of your website exclusive to paying members or subscribers. You might use one or several membership sites to offer premium or paywalled content, launch early product releases or teach online courses or coaching groups.

Member Areas plans include:

Starter: $9 per month when billed annually or $10 month to month, plus a 7% transaction fee on purchases by members. Includes one member area. You’ll get five hours of video storage.

Core: $18 per month when billed annually or $20 month to month, plus a 4% transaction fee. Includes up to three areas. You’ll get 20 hours of video storage.

Pro: $35 per month when billed annually or $40 month to month, plus a 1% transaction fee. Includes up to 10 member areas. You’ll get 50 hours of video storage.

You’ll need a Squarespace website to use Member Areas, but they’ll work with any plan, including Personal.

Google Workspace

You can subscribe to Google Workspace through Squarespace for access to Gmail, Google Docs, Drive and Calendar.

Google Workspace plans include:

Business Starter: $72 per email address when billed annually or $7.20 per email address per month. Includes video meetings with up to 100 people and 30 gigabytes of storage per email address.

Business Standard: $144 per email address when billed annually or $14.40 per email address per month. Includes video meetings with up to 150 people and 2 terabytes of storage per email address.

Business Plus: $216 per email address when billed annually or $21.60 per email address per month. Includes video meetings with up to 600 people and 5TB of storage per email address, plus additional security controls.

These prices are the same if you buy a plan through Google directly. However, if you buy a plan through Squarespace, you may qualify to get the first year free.

Ask yourself the following questions when evaluating your Squarespace plan options.

Do you sell products?

With the Personal plan, you can’t make online sales at all — which means it’s not a fit for most e-commerce businesses . But if you’re primarily booking appointments and not selling goods, you can process payments through Square Scheduling and your website can just serve as a portfolio.

How much revenue do you generate?

If you sell more than $130 per month, Squarespace Commerce Basic — which has a higher monthly fee than Squarespace Business — actually becomes cheaper overall because of Business’ 3% transaction fees.

Do you sell subscriptions?

If so, you’ll likely want to consider Squarespace Commerce Advanced. But research the Member Areas offerings to figure out whether you’ll need both products or just one.

Would a free option be better?

Squarespace is an affordable website building platform that enables you to DIY your own website at a low cost. But depending on your business and website needs, Squarespace has several pricing plans to choose from.

This means I often get the question: "Which Squarespace plan is right for me?"

Squarespace plans are either a monthly or yearly subscription, and range from $12 - $40 depending on your needs. There are many different factors that affect the website plan you'll need to purchase, and this post will be covering them in detail.

What are the Squarespace pricing plans?

Squarespace offers four different plans:

Personal ($12 per month, billed annually)

Business ($18 per month, billed annually)

Basic Commerce ($26 per month, billed annually)

Advanced Commerce ($40 per month, billed annually)

You may be wondering if there is a free plan you can subscribe to, but Squarespace only offers a two-week free trial before you'll need to pay to continue editing your website. Start your free trial by clicking this link.

Squarespace Personal Plan

$12/month billed annually or $16/month billed monthly

This plan is best for when you're just starting out with a new website and need the bare essentials to get up and running.

Benefits of the Personal Plan

Low cost. The personal plan is the inexpensive option for those wishing to save money when they first start out. At $16 per month (billed monthly), this equates to 3-4 Starbucks coffees to get your business online!

Squarespace benefits. The personal plan includes the initial benefits of choosing Squarespace, as listed above.

Drawbacks of the Personal Plan

No email marketing integrations. If you want to start building an email list, you'll only be able to use Squarespace Email Campaigns as your email marketing platform. This is a very basic platform and as you grow it won't be able to support your needs. This is the biggest reason why I recommend using the Business plan.

Limited contributors. Contributors are additional users who are able to make edits to your website. If you're starting small, it's unlikely you'll need more than two people to do this through their own account.

No premium blocks. We touched on this with email marketing, but there are specific "blocks" which you cannot use unless you are on the business plan. These are blocks like Amazon Blocks, Code Blocks, Menu Blocks, Pop Ups and more. Click here for a rundown of all premium blocks.

No ecommerce. This is the only plan that will not allow you to make sales through your website. This means you cannot take payment for products/services or collect donations. However, you may be able to use an alternative cart service like ThriveCart or SamCart to take payments instead, as long as they only require you to link a URL.

Basic analytics only. Squarespace comes with built-in analytics which allow you to track basic information like pageviews, users and sessions. This does not include form or button conversions unless you upgrade to the Business Plan or above.

Squarespace Business Plan

$18/month billed annually or $26/month billed monthly

This plan is best for most businesses and online shops that need premium blocks and ecommerce, but do not require advanced ecommerce functionality.

Benefits of the Business Plan

Ecommerce. The name of this plan and the ecommerce plans are a tad deceiving. You do not need to buy the Basic or Advanced Ecommerce plan to have ecommerce functionality. You can sell products on your website using the Business plan!

Marketing integrations. The announcement bar and pop up both become available on this plan, meaning you can promote your email list or latest offering in other places on your website. Alternatively, you can use a code block to embed a sign up form, which also lets you collect email addresses.

Premium blocks. The full list of premium blocks become available on the business plan. This means you can embed email sign up forms from any provider, and add other advanced blocks like scheduling forms.

Code injection. Unlike Custom CSS, code injection is a feature only available on this plan and will allow you to add HTML and Javascript to your website. This means you can add third-party plugins to your website - for example, we use it to add Memberspace, which hosts the video tutorials for our Squarespace templates.

Google Workspace for free. If you pay for the Business Plan annually, you'll receive a free year of Workspace, which means a professional business email, and access to all of the Google Workspace tools like Google Docs and Sheets. This alone puts the value of this plan up by $72!

Drawbacks of the Business Plan

3% payment processing fees. While you can sell products on your website, Squarespace will take an additional 3% in processing fees on top of the Stripe/Paypal fees of 2.9% + 30p. If you make more than $266 per month in sales, it will save you money to upgrade to the Basic Ecommerce Plan and avoid the 3% fee.

No advanced ecommerce features. This includes inventory, orders, tax and coupons; products on Instagram; label printing; customer accounts; advanced ecommerce analytics, limited availability labels.

Squarespace Basic Commerce Plan

$26/month billed annually or $35/month billed monthly

This plan is best for online shops that make sales of more than $266 per month, and/or require advanced ecommerce features.

Benefits of the Basic Commerce Plan

No transaction fees. This plan has zero processing fees which means you'll only ever pay the standard PayPal/Stripe fees of 2.9% + 30p on any sales you make.

Some advanced ecommerce features. This includes inventory, orders, tax and coupons; products on Instagram; label printing; customer accounts; advanced ecommerce analytics, limited availability labels.

Drawbacks of the Basic Commerce Plan

Not all advanced ecommerce features. This means no subscriptions or gift cards, limitations on discount code use, no abandoned cart auto-recovery, no smart calculation of real-time shipping rates.

Squarespace Advanced Commerce Plan

$40/month billed annually or $54/month billed monthly

Perfect for booming online shops, the Advanced Commerce Plan includes extra features which may be useful to shops looking to increase conversion rates and expand their shipping options.

Benefits of the Advanced Commerce Plan

Subscriptions. Generate recurring revenue by selling subscriptions to a service or a product. This could be a digital product membership, or weekly yoga classes.

Gift cards. Sell gift cards to your shop so people can purchase a voucher for your products or services to gift to a friend.

Extra discount code capabilities. Offer discounts that automatically apply at checkout, or have a limited use/expire.

Abandoned cart auto-recovery. The features allows you to send automatic emails to customers who have left items in their basket.

Smart calculation of real-time shipping rates. Control shipping rates at zip-code level and get real-time shipping rates from FedEX, UPS and USPS.

Can I switch between Squarespace plans?

Squarespace makes it super easy to switch between plans as needed. Whether you've paid monthly or yearly, you'll get a refund of the remaining time on your plan.

For example, if you've paid for a annual Squarespace plan for $108 dollars and have used 6 months of that plan, you'll get a refund of the remaining six months.

$108 ÷ 12 months = $9

$9 x 6 months = a refund of $54

If you need to ask for a refund, you can contact Squarespace via their live chat which runs Monday - Friday, 4:00AM to 8:00PM EDT. They're always super helpful and responsive, so I definitely recommend doing it this way!

If you're downgrading, remember that you'll loose out on some of the website features and functionality you may be using. Always check which features will be removed before making the switch.

Because Squarespace makes switching so easy, it's best to go for the least expensive plan that works for your needs, and switch to a higher one later if it's beneficial to your business.

If you're just getting started with your business and need a basic website, I recommend purchasing the Personal plan . All the necessary functionality is included, and you'll get access to important features like unlimited pages, blogging and custom CSS.

If you're looking to add a shop to your website and are just getting started with ecommerce, you'll need the Business plan . If you need to build an email list and don't want to use Squarespace Email Campaigns, you'll also need this plan.

Lastly, if you're an already established business making more than $266 per month, the Basic Commerce Plan is going to save you money. Alternatively, if you need more advanced shop features from the get-go, this will also require the Basic or Advanced Commerce Plan.

Squarespace Business Plan

The Business Plan is designed for companies that don’t need to sell products online but still need an impressive, high-quality website. It was one of the more impressive Squarespace pricing plans that our research team tested.

It costs $23 per month when paid annually or $33   per month when billed monthly and offers some juicy extras when compared to the Personal Plan.

For a start, you’ll be able to register unlimited contributors to your site — almost essential for businesses with more than a handful of employees. Plus, you’ll be able to get a professional email from Google, featuring your site’s custom domain name rather than @gmail.com. You’ll also get access to shared calendars (useful for planning meetings), access to Google Drive, and improved support.

The Business Plan’s other huge advantage over the Personal Plan is its advanced website metrics. This means you’ll be able to analyze how users find and interact with your website in order to make improvements to its design, increase sales and make more money. You’ll also be able to access a selection of tools to encourage customers to visit your store or place an order. You get $100 of Google Ad credit to help attract customers to your site, as well as access to promotional pop-ups and an announcement bar to make your offers even more enticing.

You get access to more tools and design elements to give your site more functionality. For example, you can connect apps that allow customers to place orders and make reservations and use these forms to add records to your customer database. You’ll also be able to show off any products you sell on Instagram with links directly to your store. Finally, you’ll get access to the CSS and JavaScript code that your site is based on in case you need to do any really fancy editing and be able to use Squarespace’s new Fluid Engine editor — giving users granular levels of control over their site.

For small bricks-and-mortar shops or services businesses, the Business plan is ideal.

For basic ecommerce functionality, the $23 per month price tag from Squarespace compares favorably to other options, as you won’t get any online store features until you pay $27 per month for Wix. Still, you’ll be saddled with that 3% transaction fee, which you won’t find on Wix, so you have to take that into account.

Squarespace Ecommerce Plans

Squarespace offers two pricing plans for ecommerce website building: Basic and Advanced .

Squarespace Basic Commerce Plan

The Basic Commerce plan costs  $27 per month when paid annually or $36 per month when billed monthly — you will also pay no transaction fees on any sales.

This plan gives you a lot of functionality for its cost. Squarespace has hiked all their plan costs since 2021, but they have only raised the Basic plan’s cost by a dollar a month. This is by far the lowest price increase, and it’s a sign that Squarespace wants to keep drawing in new ecommerce customers with a particularly good deal on the Basic plan.

For example, you get a fully mobile-optimized checkout on your own site and improved commercial metrics to identify any pain points your users are finding with your site.

You also get access to integrated accounting and label printing services, provided by specialists that have partnered with Squarespace. This makes it super easy to keep your stall in order.

At $27 per month, the Basic Commerce plan is identical to the Wix Core plan, which also offers ecommerce functionality. There are some notable differences, though. For one, Wix offers abandoned cart recovery at this price point while Squarespace doesn’t. But Squarespace does allow for product reviews in this plan, which Wix doesn’t.

All that to say, with pricing being so similar, it’s all about what kind of features you want.

Squarespace Advanced Commerce Plan

The  Advanced  Commerce  plan is Squarespace’s most expensive plan. It costs  $49 per month when billed annually or  $65 per month when billed monthly.

While you might wince at that price, don’t forget that Squarespace’s excellent site design and features will be helping you make way more money than that.

You get all the features from the Basic Commerce plan, plus:

  • Abandoned cart auto-recovery
  • Advanced shipping rate calculations for USPS, FedEx, and UPS
  • Flexible discounts to specific order values, or limited use or time promotions
  • The ability to sell digital gift cards
  • Access to the Orders API, which allows you to build custom integrations with third-party services for order fulfillment and production logistics
  • Subscription sales for recurring product orders

This extra level of functionality means that you’ll be able to offer a complete ecommerce experience with remarkable ease. If your business is selling products, this is the best way to go about it.

Squarespace is great for a lot of reasons, but as an enterprise-level online store provider, it could do better. Shopify, for example, has a $29 per month plan that offers more robust options, including inventory management, which might be a better fit. Still, if design is your priority, stick with Squarespace and just accept that inventory management isn’t in the cards for you.

Squarespace Pricing: Can I Use Squarespace for Free?

Yes, you can use Squarespace for free – but only for 14 days. After that, you’ll have to go with one of the regular Squarespace pricing plans to continue using it.

That might seem like a shame, but as we’ve spoken about elsewhere, free website builders are far from ideal . You’ll have a very limited feature set, your site will be littered with ads, and there’s a high chance you won’t actually be able to publish your website at all.

Squarespace’s 14-day free trial , though, gives you the chance to try-before-you-buy. You’ll be able to set up your site exactly to your liking, and when the 14 days are up, you’ll be able to publish it straight away.

However, we found in our research that the ecommerce features were extremely limited in the free trial, which means you aren’t going to get a good feel for its online store functionality before you buy. Overall, we found that ecommerce functionality to be good and easy to use for smaller businesses with traditional businesses, because the lack of customizability hampers any significant changes.

With an overall research score of 4.5/5 , Squarespace is one of the best website builders we’ve tested due to its excellent design functionality, comparable only to fellow market-leader Wix in terms of the powerful features on offer. The main difference between Wix and Squarespace is that Wix is slightly easier to use, whereas Squarespace prioritizes design features.

In our research, some of the most impressive aspects of Squarespace beyond its design functionality were its simple, comprehensive reporting tools , which all you to view website data all in a custom dashboard, and multi-channel selling functionality, providing simple setup for discounts, email campaigns, social integration, and payment options.

Every website has a domain name. Ours, for example, is Tech.co.

Without a domain name, you won’t have a website – and while it is something you have to pay for, it’s not something that costs a lot of money. With Squarespace, when you pay for your website plan annually, you get a free domain for a year .

When your year’s free domain ends, you’ll need to pay for it on a monthly or yearly basis, and it can be renewed from within your Squarespace account. Domains typically cost somewhere between $20-50 per month, depending on what top-level domain you go for (.com, .org, .me, etc.)

So, this means that a Personal Plan website with a year’s hosting could cost about $165 , or $13.75 per month. And, considering that you get unlimited storage and bandwidth on all Squarespace plans, that’s far from a bad deal.

Squarespace Pricing: Does Squarespace Charge Hidden Fees?

As with most website builders, there’s a bit more to Squarespace’s pricing plans than meets the eye. There are often hidden fees with website builders that can make running your website more expensive than you might have originally thought, such as contract length, hosting, and transaction fees for online stores.

Custom domain

As mentioned above, you get a free custom domain for one year, even on Squarespace’s cheapest pricing plan, if you pay for a year upfront with an annual plan.

The custom domain will auto-renew at Squarespace’s standard rate after this period — typically around $20-40 per year .

You might be able to find a cheaper solution by choosing a custom host (we like InMotion or BlueHost ), after your years ends, if you don’t mind the hassle of moving.

While you do get Gmail free on the Business Plan, you only get one account. Plus Google’s email solution isn’t the best for sending mass marketing emails.

If you want to add another Gmail account, for example if you have more than one employee, you’ll need to sign up for a professional email service separately.

If you want to do some email marketing, however, you’ll need a dedicated solution. And preferably one that integrates fully with your website for easy analysis.

This means you might want need to pay for a premium Squarespace extension with a company such as MailChimp. Squarespace does offer its own Email Campaigns tool, but this only has a limited set of free features included.

Payment processing fees

There is a 3% transaction fee if you opt for the Business plan. However, Squarespace does not charge transaction fees on its Basic Commerce or Advanced Commerce plans, a perk that is definitely not available with many other website builders.

However, if you decide to use Squarespace for ecommerce, you will find that the companies that process your payments will charge a fee. Squarespace has no control over this, but it does have some preferred partner companies, such as Square (which is different from Squarespace — confusing, we know) which might make it easier or cheaper.

When it comes to price, Squarespace boasts some serious value, particularly compared to its website building competitors.

While Squarespace and our frontrunner Wix both offer the same entry price of $16 per month , we found that Squarespace offered better value overall. This is because the average price of Squarespace’s plans is lower than Wix’s, and Squarespace’s entry-level plan offers slightly more competitive features, earning Squarespace a value score of 4.2/5 compared to Wix’s 3.5/5 .

If you’re able to sacrifice top-tier user experience, Hostinger is even more affordable than Squarespace with the builder’s plan starting from a rock bottom $2.49 per month . There are a variety of free website builders available as well for users looking to slash costs completely, they’re no match for Squarespace when it comes to design and web building functionality.

Choosing the right Squarespace plan for your client is arguably one of the most important steps of the whole web design process. When you hand over the keys to their brand new website, this plan is what will keep the site running smoothly moving forward.

As a web designer, it’s your responsibility to advise your clients on best practices. This includes finding the perfect mix of price and functionality. You don’t want clients to overspend on a plan that they don’t need, but they’ll require something robust enough to handle their short- and long-term goals.

Understanding client needs

First, you must understand exactly what your client needs from their website plan. This isn’t about what you want to offer (or sell) them, but about what they realistically need to create and run a website that will help them reach their business goals.

To fully understand client needs, there are two key areas to consider:

Assess the scope of the project

Each Squarespace plan offers a different level of complexity and features. During the consultation , determine the scope of the project. How complex does the website need to be? How many pages should it include? Should the website support ecommerce functionality? 

The responses to these questions will help you determine the best Squarespace plan for your client. 

Budget considerations

Budget discussions are a key part of client communication during every build, but they’re not just about how much you’ll charge to create the website. You also need to discuss how much the client is willing to set aside for their Squarespace plan.

Be clear with clients from the beginning and set expectations that they will need to pay for an ongoing Squarespace plan. Explain what they will get for their money. Squarespace has an array of different plans at different price points, meaning it’s likely you’ll find an option that suits your client’s budget.

Every single plan comes with unlimited bandwidth. For instance, no matter how many photos they wish to store or how many visitors they expect on their site, your clients will be covered. This is a fantastic selling point to potential and current clients. 

Ecommerce considerations

If your client wants a website with ecommerce features, they will need to have a Business plan at the very least. 

It’s not, however, a one-size-fits-all approach, and, instead, you’ll need to work with your clients to understand how advanced they want their online store to be, as well as how many products they wish to stock.

For example, a restaurant owner who wants to add a small store to their website to sell merchandise will benefit from a less advanced plan than an online clothing store whose website’s main purpose is to sell. 

Additional features and customizations

When choosing the right Squarespace plan for your client, you also need to consider just how much they’ll want to customize the site.

For some, spruced-up Squarespace templates will be enough. However, more advanced websites may require code injection , something that can only be added to websites on a Business plan and above. 

If the client only requires CSS, then you can suggest a Personal plan. But it’s important to get this information early on. If you go all in with HTML and JavaScript coding while the site is in trial, all of this will be disabled if your client ultimately opts for a Personal plan. This not only renders your work obsolete, but it will completely change the site’s overall functionality (and potentially its aesthetic).

Third-party integrations

Some clients may also want to add third-party integrations and extensions to extend the power of their website. Examples of additions that your client may want to make to their website include Google Analytics, Weglot, TaxJar, Printful, and more. 

There are also other embeddable integrations should you find that your clients are interested in these integrations. If so, you can confidently rule out the Personal plan and explore Business plan options with your client.

Scalability and future growth

Selecting a Squarespace plan for your client isn’t just about where they are right now. You’ll want to take into account where they hope to be in the future, too. 

Discuss plans for growth with your client so that you can verify their Squarespace plan will support scalability. For example, your client may not sell products today, but they may plan to in the next five years. With that in mind, it’s advantageous to set them up on a plan that will support this from the very start. In this particular case, the Business plan is their best bet as it empowers them to dip their toe into the “Selling” menus, get their store set up, and test the waters, all without committing to a larger monthly (or annual) subscription.

Your clients won’t always recognize how their future plans are relevant to the website they’re building today, so it’s your job to ask the questions. 

Making the final decision

When you recommend a Squarespace plan to a client, you need to be prepared to justify it. Review the key requirements for the website that you identified with your client and align these with the most appropriate plan, backing up your decision with facts and data. Remember: the clearer you can be with your client, the better.

If you suggest one of the less advanced plans, it’s important to discuss any trade-offs or features the client won’t have access to. They may decide they aren’t willing to miss out on these, or, alternatively, they may want to avoid paying extra for features they don’t want or need. 

A pro’s recommendations

Every client will have different needs. However, you can use the following framework as a guide to making plan recommendations. 

Opt for a Personal plan if the client doesn’t require code injection, ecommerce functionality, premium integrations, or professional email.

If your client’s site doesn’t require ecommerce but does require code injection, the Business plan may be what they need.

If your client requires light ecommerce functionality, doesn’t expect too many sales, and is happy to pay a transaction fee on top of the usual payment processor fees, then the Business plan is still a great option.

For those expecting more than a handful of sales per month, the Commerce Basic plan is a better value than the Business plan.

Recommend a Commerce Advanced plan if your client needs abandoned cart recovery, selling recurring subscription products, advanced shipping, advanced discounts, or commerce APIs. No other plan includes these, so this is a hard-and-fast rule.

What is a business plan?

A business plan is a written document outlining every aspect of your business: what it is, your goals, how you plan to grow, financial forecasts, market research, and strategies. A business plan serves two main purposes as your business grows:

A business plan can be used internally to keep you on the right track and as motivation during tougher moments—or show you any weak spots where you need to bolster your analysis or tighten your business focus.

Ideally, a business plan should be written in direct, plain language that anyone can understand, even if they're unfamiliar with the industry.

The parts of a professional business plan

When you're starting out, you might not be able to fill out every single section of a business plan. If you aren't at a place yet where a lengthy document makes sense, creating a one-page business plan is a good alternative. Some experts even recommend first writing a shorter, condensed version of a business plan to share with trusted colleagues for feedback and refinement before diving into a longer, more detailed plan.

Business plans should contain the following sections:

Executive summary

Think of an executive summary as how you might describe the ins and outs of your small business to a stranger. This is a high-level look at your company—what it is, what it does or sells, and its overarching goals—that also includes a brief overview of the information covered in detail in the rest of the plan. Later sections will be more robust and detail exactly how you plan to operate. In fact, many people find it easier to write out the more detailed plan first and then pull the most important points out for the executive summary. As a rule of thumb, keep this section under two pages. 

Company description

This is a deeper dive into your company, including its mission and vision, location, and other details.

Products and services

What are you selling or what products are you offering? Be as detailed as possible about your angle and approach. For example, instead of selling "drawings," specify that you sell "hand-drawn artwork." If you have a unique aesthetic, or focus on just one area of merchandise, share that too. You want to be clear about what makes your online business unique .

Competitive analysis

This section of the business plan is all about research. A competitive analysis is a deep dive into the other companies operating in your corner of the business world. Look at their growth and financials, and show where your company fits in. What makes you different from other companies? What is your opportunity and your advantage?

Market analysis

A market analysis considers the market as a whole, not just your immediate competitors. You can also include an industry analysis, looking at whether your desired business area is growing, poised for a turnaround, or in a slump.

Customer analysis

Customers are core to any online business. This section can outline the personas of your ideal customer and the best ways to reach them, as well as the typical customers of competitors.

Marketing plan

A marketing plan focuses on promoting your business to the outside world. Drawing on the analysis from above, this forward-thinking plan contains information on how you intend to grow by using strategies such as social media, advertising, content, and events. Marketing plans and strategies change often, so don't be surprised if this section of your business plan evolves.

Management and organization

This section becomes more important as your business grows. It includes an organization chart, complete with bios that capture your expertise as the founder, and the skills and achievements of your employees.

Financial plan and outlook

From startup expenses, to potential capital infusions and profit and loss information, this section contains the financial outlook and projections for your online business. This section's composition will vary depending on your stage of business development.

The appendix is a place to add information that didn't fit in the rest of the business plan, or elaborate on any important points in a previous section. For example, you can cite sources for your competitive research, or include more thorough breakdowns of your market analysis.

Squarespace Personal – $16 per month or $23 per month

Best for Blogs

Squarespace Personal is, as the name suggests, very much tailored to personal websites. The platform’s cheapest tier offers a somewhat limited range of services when compared to the others, but if your goal is to showcase your work and publicize your contacts, it does the job.

Like all Squarespace’s pricing plans, this one comes with unlimited bandwidth, SEO features, mobile optimisation, a free custom domain (for the first year) and an array of gorgeous templates to choose from. Overall, blogs, portfolios, showreels, and all sorts of personal projects fit this pricing tier like a glove .

But beware: Squarespace Personal does not support online selling – nor does it allow you to accept any payments at all. So it’s definitely not the option if you plan on setting up an online store.

With that and the price tag in mind, we don’t think Squarespace’s Personal plan cuts it . Small projects will benefit from cheaper options, like Weebly (whose basic plan, Connect, starts at $6 per month in a yearly contract) and GoDaddy (whose cheapest plan costs $9.99 per month in the first year, and $11.99 afterwards).

Best for Small Businesses

Squarespace’s second tier provides great value for money and the best of both worlds in the sense that, even without shelling out for a full-on ecommerce plan, you get many of the perks that would come with one.

Along with all the features of the Personal plan, Squarespace’s Business plan also includes a free Gmail and Google Workspace account (for the first year), complete customization with CSS and JavaScript (in English: you can add elements to make your website look super slick), and ecommerce integration. Plus, it works alongside various payment platforms : Amazon, Apple Pay, PayPal, Square, and Stripe. If reading that makes you hear those cha-chings already, you can go ahead and fetch this plan on Squarespace ‘s website.

However, depending on the size of your business, you should watch out for a very important detail: this plan comes with a 3% transaction fee on every online sale you make. If your sales are or will be occasional, that won’t pose a problem, but if you deal (or plan on dealing) with a high volume of sales, this isn’t the option for you. Instead, one of Squarespace’s Commerce tiers will suit you better.

Squarespace Basic Commerce – $27 per month or $36 per month

Best for Online Stores

Big league time. Moving into the platform’s ecommerce arena, Squarespace Basic Commerce is geared towards online sales , and includes many features that should suit most businesses out there.

For starters, Squarespace Basic Commerce does away with the transaction fee . Besides the ecommerce integration included in the Business plan, the Basic Commerce packs a punch when it comes to making your website look primed for sales. It allows your customers to create their own accounts, and to check out while still on your domain. They also get to see stock availability, other customers’ reviews, and related products.

On that note, on this plan, Squarespace gives you several tools through which you can monitor your best-selling items and sales trends, and bulk-manage inventory. You also get to check your visit-to-sale conversion rate and, through an in-built Facebook link, you’re able to sell your products directly on Instagram as well.

Considering the amount of features on this tier, it’s excellent for existing businesses that are keen on making the jump into online sales, or new businesses that have been based in the digital realm from the get-go . If your business ticks any of those boxes, just head to Squarespace and get started.

Squarespace Basic Commerce misses a few of the tools in the platform’s full arsenal – such as the ability to sell subscriptions – but these features are designed for more established online merchants anyway (we’ll get to them in a second, when we analyse Squarespace’s Advanced Commerce plan). If you’re just entering this arena, however, Basic Commerce should be your weapon of choice.

This one does what it says on the tin, really: Squarespace Advanced Commerce is the platform’s top tier, and comes with all the perks mentioned so far, plus some extras to really make your business zing.

Among the specialized tools at your disposal, this plan allows you to sell subscriptions, set up email reminders for customers who left your website without purchasing, and automate discount offers at checkout.

For all its features, Squarespace Advanced Commerce is very much aimed at businesses that already have an online presence and are looking to expand . Considering the cost, however, if you’re starting out in digital sales, you’re better off with the lower-priced tiers.

On the other hand, Squarespace Advanced Commerce is a more basic plan when compared with Shopify Advanced ($399/month). In our Shopify review we explain why it’s a better option than Squarespace for ambitious sellers looking to manage a complex inventory set-up.

Speaking of bank-breaking, let’s tackle one hard money-related truth straight on: Squarespace doesn’t have a free plan, so you will need to shell out to get your hands on it. That said, you can trial any of its plans for free for 14 days . After that time expires, you can even request a one-time seven-day extension if you contact Squarespace’s customer service team.

The trial is a good opportunity for you to try the plan that looks like the best fit for your business, and then grow or scale down accordingly when it comes to actually buying. Because of this, and the fact that it allows you to sample most of Squarespace’s features without having to commit, we recommend doing a trial.

Squarespace is pretty clear about what it charges, so for the most part, you’re not in for any surprises. You can choose between paying monthly or yearly, and the discounts if you choose the latter are quite substantial , as costs get hefty on a month-to-month basis. Your subscription will renew automatically .

You should, however, watch out for the fees charged by the payment platform you choose to integrate, whether that’s Amazon, Apple Pay, PayPal, Square, or Stripe. Squarespace nabs 3% of your sale on its Business plan, but otherwise, it either doesn’t allow for payments (as on the Personal plan) or doesn’t charge a transaction fee (as on the Commerce plans).

However, in any plan in which ecommerce integration is possible, the payment platform you use will take a bite – usually a percentage of the sale, plus a fixed fee. It varies from platform to platform – hence us not going into further detail here – but in any case, it’s worth checking out your payment platform’s fees so you don’t buy a specific Squarespace plan (especially the Commerce ones) thinking absolutely no fees are due.

Squarespace Scheduling, called Acuity, is an extra service provided by the platform. It’s tailor-made for businesses that work with appointments . Clinical consultations, space rental, classes of any kind – it doesn’t matter: if a date and time needs to be booked, Squarespace Scheduling does the trick.

The thing to pay attention to is that this handy tool doesn’t come within Squarespace’s main pricing plans , so you would have to shell out a bit more to get it. Like those plans, however, you do get a discount (albeit not as big) if you bite the bullet and go with a yearly plan.

With Scheduling, you can choose between three tiers: Emerging, Growing and Powerhouse .

Emerging is perfect for small, personal businesses that don’t have various calendars or several team members inputting data. It allows calendar syncing with selected email providers, has ecommerce integration, and automates email reminders. It costs $14 month-to-month .

Growing is geared towards businesses with more employees and locations. You can create and sync six calendars, handle bundled and recurring bookings, and send reminders via SMS as well as email. This one comes at $23 month-to-month .

Finally, Powerhouse ups the ante when it comes to sheer volume of calendars: you can create a maximum of 36 (and sync them)! Plus, you have more room to personalize the scheduler with custom CSS. For this, you would pay $45 month-to-month .

As far as value for money goes, Growing is the best plan . You get access to almost all of the tool’s features for about half the price of the costliest version. Powerhouse only makes sense if your business is a multi-location megachain, with all your locations taking appointments – in which case, congratulations!

If you want to build a simple yet functional website without the need for it to look fresh off the runway, there are better options than Squarespace considering the investment involved. Its lowest price tag of $16 per month puts it at a disadvantage against cheaper competitors like Weebly or GoDaddy, which allow you to become a website owner without spending as much.

However, when ecommerce integration is thrown into the mix, Squarespace’s pricing really shines . It occupies a solid middle ground, which means it’s all out to satisfy most business-owners without costing a fortune – the 4.2/5 score it received on value for money from our customer surveys sums it up nicely. It’s on a par with Wix’s pricing , when billed annually, as both web builders start from $16 per month.

If you just want to build a simple personal site, I’d recommend the aptly named Personal plan . The Business plan provides more advanced management tools, as well as marketing and basic eCommerce functionality.

And finally, the Basic and Advanced Commerce plans add a suite of tools for those planning to create an online store.

What Does the Personal Plan Include?

The cheapest Squarespace prices can be accessed with the Personal plan , which costs $16/month for an annual subscription.

All annual plans come with a free domain for the first twelve months. All subscriptions also include a free SSL certificate, advanced SEO integrations, mobile-optimized website templates, 24/7 customer support, and unlimited bandwidth and storage.

Personally, I feel like it’s a little expensive, but it certainly comes with a much greater range of advanced tools than the low-end plans from competitors like Wix .

The more advanced Business plan costs $23/month with an annual subscription. It includes everything in the Personal plan, along with advanced website analytics and other marketing tools.

Basic eCommerce tools are also available , allowing you to sell an unlimited number of products, accept donations, and sell gift cards. Note, though, that all sales will be subject to a 3% transaction fee.

One other thing I like is that an annual subscription includes free G Suite and a free professional Gmail account for the first year .

Overall, this plan is targeted at small to medium business owners who want to get online with minimum fuss. And In my opinion, it does a great job.

The Advanced Commerce plan is the best choice for medium-sized online businesses with high-level ecommerce needs .

On top of the features offered in the Basic Commerce plan, this plan gives businesses the ability to sell subscriptions to generate recurring revenue, meaning your customers can sign up to regular product deliveries or service offers.

Just because the advertised price is £17 per month, that doesn’t actually mean you’ll spend £17 per month on your Squarespace website.

Squarespace offers you a choice of two billing cycles: monthly, or annually.

Although given as ‘monthly’, the advertised prices are always for an annual subscription, which you’ll pay for in one upfront lump sum.

If you’re on the Squarespace Business plan , any payments taken through Squarespace are subject to a standard payment processor fee and a Squarespace Commerce transaction fee of 3% .

If you’re on either the Basic or Advanced Commerce plan, you’ll only have to pay the payment processor fee. This varies depending on which payment provider you choose, and which country you’re in.

Permira is taking Squarespace private in a $6.9 billion deal

Website builder Squarespace is being taken private by U.K.-based private equity firm Permira in an all-cash deal that gives the company an enterprise valuation of $6.9 billion.

Founded in 2004 by CEO Anthony Casalena , Squarespace is best known for its no-code platform designed to help SMEs and freelancers build websites, blogs and online stores. It includes customizable templates and a “what you see is what you get” (WYSIWYG) interface that users can configure by dragging and dropping different elements.

Shortly after raising $300 million at a hefty $10 billion valuation in 2021, Squarespace filed to go public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), reaching a market cap high of $8 billion in mid-2021. In the intervening months, the company’s stock went into freefall, dropping its worth to a low of $2 billion in 2022. This year has seen its stock rebound to its highest point since late 2021, and its market cap has soared past the $5 billion mark off the back of strong earnings .

As part of its offer, Permira will offer Squarespace shareholders $44 per share, representing a 15% premium on its Friday (May 10, 2024) closing price. The deal gives the company an equity valuation of $6.6 billion.

In a huge vote of confidence in Casalena, who steered the company from blog-hosting service while at university to a billion-dollar business, Permira is keeping him on as CEO and board chairman. He will also continue to be “one of the largest” Squarespace shareholders post-acquisition.

Are PEs coming back strong?

There has been a flurry of activity in the private equity space of late: Thoma Bravo took cybersecurity company Darktrace private in a $5 billion deal , shortly after a similar deal to take critical event management software company Everbridge private for $1.8 billion.

Vista Equity also last month announced plans to acquire revenue optimization platform Model N for $1.25 billion, while EQT subsidiary EQT Private Capital Asia snapped up API and identity management software company WSO2 for more than $600 million.

Permira, for its part, has been involved in some big acquisitions these past few years. In 2022, it struck a take-private deal that saw it team up with Hellman & Friedman to acquire Zendesk for $10.2 billion , and a year before that, it shelled out  $5.8 billion for email security firm Mimecast .

Less than two weeks ago, Permira acquired a majority stake in BioCatch, a Tel Aviv-based cybersecurity firm that uses AI and machine learning to help customers such as banks track users’ online behavior to establish whether a person is real or a potential fraudster. 

Squarespace, as a consumer-grade website builder, is fairly far removed from Permira’s previous acquisitions. But it is clearly an alluring proposition for a private equity firm looking for a solid business that has largely underperformed. Squarespace passed $1 billion in annual revenue for the first time last year, and it has made additional investments in generative AI (GenAI) to help businesses produce web content and email campaigns. Its trajectory may be one of the reasons Permira came calling.

“The Squarespace ecosystem provides SMBs with a broad offering — from demand generation to powerful payment solutions, all seamlessly interwoven with intuitive GenAI,” Permira partner Andrew Young said in a statement. “We share Anthony and the team’s vision to further invest in these tools to help customers grow.”
