PARIS’ TECHNICAL INSTITUTE OF CHEMISTRY

PhD program

Every year, Chimie ParisTech - PSL welcomes around a hundred PhD students in its research teams, distributed across its 3 laboratories. The PhD is the highest university degree. This PhD is recognized worldwide and is practically required for professionals who want to work in R&D, especially in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Training PhD students through research allows them to acquire project management skills on top of technical skills. Doing a thesis at Chimie ParisTech - PSL is particularly relevant given the proximity of the school to the industrial world. In addition to their scientific education, PhD students acquire training in innovation and a knowledge of the socio-economic world. Of the approximately one hundred students doing their thesis at Chimie ParisTech - PSL, 25% are financed by the industry (CEA, ADEME, IFP, companies, etc.), of which 16% are under a CIFRE agreement. This shows how close research laboratories are to companies.

PhD schools offer compulsory training in addition to the research work. This program allows students to learn how to manage innovation, bibliographies, etc. It also supports PhD students with their thesis by monitoring them and their work throughout the thesis with a yearly review and assigning them a teacher-researcher who will be responsible for the supervision of their thesis.

Doing a thesis at Chimie ParisTech - PSL

International joint supervision PhD programs

The school develops international joint supervision theses. As a symbol of excellent and lasting scientific relations, joint supervision PhD students benefit from the best assets of both partners.

Since 2018, six joint supervision programs have been set up, notably with Mexico, China, South Africa, Italy and Canada.

PhD students are registered in both institutions and carry out their work under the responsibility of a thesis manager in each country. Students work on their thesis while splitting their time between the institutions concerned based on a schedule and terms predefined in the joint supervision agreement.

The language in which the thesis is written is defined in this agreement. When this language is not French, a substantial summary in French needs to be added to the paper. The title of Doctor is conferred simultaneously and jointly by each institution concerned and they each issue their own PhD degree to the student after a single thesis defense.

The establishment of a joint supervision thesis is up to its future managers. Chimie ParisTech - PSL researchers are invited to contact the International Relations Department to set it up.

International co-management of the thesis

If the thesis is internationally co-managed, PhD students carry out their research work under the responsibility of two thesis managers, one from the institution where they are registered and another from the partner. A co-management agreement may be signed by both institutions and the research directors concerned.

PhD students are enrolled in only one institution, from which they will receive the rank of doctor. A single defense takes place at the university in which the students are enrolled.

For a PhD student enrolled in France, the thesis is usually written in French. This international co-management system allows the PhD student to benefit from a joint supervision.

PhD students have 3 years to complete their thesis in France. During this period, they retain the status of student while receiving a remuneration that gives them an employee status (social security contribution, retirement, unemployment). This remuneration may be:

• A PhD contract from the Ministry of Higher Education for Research and Innovation.
• A Convention Industrielle de Formation par la Recherche (CIFRE, “Industrial Convention of Formation by Research”) associated with hiring by a company.
• A training contract through research (CFR in partnership with the CEA, etc.)
• A research contract (ANR, Europe, Ademe, DGA, foundations, etc.).
• A scholarship from a foreign government. For example, ParisTech and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) signed a PhD program agreement in France in 2011. This program is open to highly qualified Chinese students who want to pursue their PhD education in a ParisTech school. The funding granted covers a period ranging from 36 to 48 months in France. From 2013 to 2018, 27 students were admitted to the program to do their PhD at Chimie ParisTech. Students also have the opportunity to carry out a co-supervised PhD as part of a collaboration between the research group they come from in China and their host laboratory in France, with a CSC scholarship covering 6 to 24 months in France.

Thesis registration 

Students must first have the agreement of the PhD school and of the thesis director to proceed with their registration. The Chimie ParisTech - PSL thesis department takes care of the administrative registration or re-registration of PhD students carrying out their thesis at Chimie ParisTech - PSL.

PhD PROGRAM CHEMISTRY - GRADUATE SCHOOL CHEMISTRY

This doctoral program is dedicated to chemists, who want to start a PhD at Université Paris Saclay. Because chemistry is one the main pillars in sciences, we offer immersive doctoral programs for motivated students to reach the highest level in chemical sciences.

Our open-minded doctoral school carries out inorganic, organic, analytical, physical, material and biological chemistries in the best laboratories at the south of Paris.

For this program, you will be attached to the doctoral school Chemical sciences: molecules, materials, instrumentation and bio systems (2MIB)

The doctoral school "Chemical Sciences: Molecules, Materials, Instrumentation and Biosystems (2MIB)" is a disciplinary school based on the components of chemistry of the Paris-Saclay perimeter which cover a large part of the spectrum of the discipline. Its ambition is to offer doctoral students a training space for fundamental research and its applications in response to societal challenges, typically in the field of environment, sustainable development, materials, biology or pharmacology.

The ED is organized around 3 poles or intra-ED programs

• Physical, BioPhysical and Analytical Chemistry (CPBA)
• Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry (BOC)
• Inorganic Chemistry and Materials (CIM)

Two transverse axes are added to these three poles :

• The professional integration and international mobility of doctoral students
• Doctoral training

Doctoral students admitted to the doctoral program will have a public law doctoral contract. The duration of the contract is 3 years. The contractual doctoral students are full-time employees with the sole or main mission of carrying out their doctoral project. They may also be entrusted with complementary missions of teaching, scientific mediation, valorization or expertise.

The PhD within the doctoral school imposes an annual monitoring committee with two researchers or teacher-researchers from outside the project and the laboratory in which the thesis is done. In addition, the doctoral school, through its director, its assistant directors and its secretariat is attentive to the smooth running of the doctoral program and the well-being of its doctoral students. From the day of their arrival, the first years are invited to contact their cluster director and/or the monitoring committee in case of difficulty. If the thesis is stopped, the doctoral school systematically schedules an interview to find out the reasons why.

The employment rate of doctors from the 2MIB doctoral school is excellent at 94% with a salary level of 37,000 euros per year for the years 2016-2018. The parity is almost perfect for our graduates (52% women and 48% men). Finally, we note that the vast majority of the doctoral school's doctors are 87% satisfied with their jobs.

Prerequisite 

The recruitment of a doctoral student is subject to obtaining a master's degree (engineer or equivalent with the possibility of VAE) or equivalent in chemistry from a French or foreign university.

Jury Evaluation Criteria

1. Background and skills

• Academic background, diplomas obtained, student's ranking
• Past research experiences, internship and quality of the associated internship report
• Letter of recommendation from supervisors

2. Stakes and originality of the subject, understanding of the scientific context

• Proposed scientific approach
• Quality of the presentation and answers to questions

The director of each cluster constitutes the cluster's recruitment jury. The Graduate School of Chemistry as well as all the HDRs of the ED are informed of the composition of the jury.

Here are the 2 main steps to be part of the Chemistry - Graduate School Chemistry Program 

• To apply the student must apply on ADUM by choosing a proposed subject (or several subjects).
• If the student is eligible (after analysis of his or her file) there is then a 30 min audition with 10-15 minutes of presentation + questions and discussion with the jury.

The Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people, including around 45 PhD students, work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. The international environment and good opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations enables PhD students at the department to participate in relevant research projects and prepare for an international research career.

We are looking for a PhD student to develop analytical methods that will enable the study of bioactive lipids in tissue using mass spectrometry imaging. A concrete goal will be to enhance the signal of bioactive lipids for detection and mapping in tissue. After development, the method will be applied to compare healthy and diseased tissue to explore the role of various bioactive lipids in, for example, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and cancer.

The project involves chemical imaging of tissue using high resolution mass spectrometry and nano-DESI, development of chemical reactions to increase signals, molecular characterization with tandem mass spectrometry, quantification and data handling with image analysis.

The project requires you to be involved in all the steps of the project and collaborate with researchers focused on biomedicine and pathology. You will be working at the absolute forefront of the field and develop methodologies, both by doing experiments and analyzing the data.

• Scientific collaboration within and outside the group
• Communication of the results
• Development of the methods

You will be given extensive creative space to develop the project and resources to produce cutting edge results. You will be part of our highly collaborative team, which strives for excellent research. You are expected to grow into an independent researcher at the end of your PhD.

The position is placed in the Lanekoff research group. The group has the goal to develop and use novel analytical methods to chemically map tissue and cells to uncover chemical processes of importance for biological function and dysfunction. Duties The main duties of PhD students are to devote themselves to their research studies, which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (not more than 20 % of full time). 

Requirements

• To be eligible for doctoral education, a basic higher education equivalent to at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at Master’s level, including an independent project equivalent to at least 15 credits, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, more information about the general requirements can be found here .
• Special eligibility to doctoral studies in Analytical Chemistry requires that the doctoral student has passed courses in chemistry, or courses in areas relevant to analytical chemistry, of at least 90 credits or that he/she has acquired equivalent knowledge abroad. More information about the subject specific requirements can be found here .
• Very good English proficiency in speech and writing.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as good collaborative skills, motivation and independence, as well as how the applicant through his/her experience and competence is judged to have the abilities necessary to develop within and acquire the doctoral education.

Additional qualifications We are looking for a highly driven person, who shows clear signs to perform research work independently and can work effectively in a team. Primarily, we are looking for a candidate with a master’s degree in chemistry that is focused on analytical chemistry. Experience in mass spectrometry and analysis of lipids are meriting.

Doctoral students are normally engaged for some teaching at undergraduate and graduate level. Previous experience from teaching/mentoring, even from environments outside the school/university, as well as other outreach activities may therefore be meritorious.

“What CRISPR is to DNA, ADAR is to RNA.” That’s how Sophia Lugo, CEO of the new biotechnology firm Radar Therapeutics , describes the endogenous RNA editor that the company is trying to co-opt to produce therapeutic proteins in specific cells. The firm has launched with $13.4 million in seed funding.

ADAR stands for “adenosine deaminase acting on RNA.” It is essentially a protein in our cells that sweeps in when our RNA becomes double stranded. This protective enzyme makes a small edit in the double-stranded RNA so the body recognizes it as its own rather than coming from dangerous outside sources like viruses.

Radar is now using that editing system and combining it with messenger RNA (mRNA) technology to treat diseases.

The company’s name comes from the technology behind its platform, RNA sensing using ADAR. Radar licensed the technology from Stanford University, where it was developed by chemical engineer Xiaojing Gao and his team and first reported in October 2022 ( Nat. Biotechnol. , DOI: 10.1038/s41587-022-01493-x ). The same month, other institutions published similar RNA sensors based on ADAR ( Nature , DOI: 10.1038/s41586-022-05280-1 ; Nat. Biotechnol ., DOI: 10.1038/s41587-022-01534-5 ).

In all three studies, the researchers designed RNA strands encoding a stop sign, called a stop codon, and a protein. When the synthetic RNA bound to its target, ADAR would swoop in, edit the stop sign to turn it off, and so trigger the body to produce the encoded protein.

Radar has refined the technology further with the help of cofounder and synthetic biology expert Jim Collins of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The newer Radar probes are modular and include a section encoding a therapeutic protein, a binding module that can specifically bind to target RNA, and a small loop containing the stop codon. According to Lugo, that loop can be fine-tuned to optimize the ADAR editing and the expression of the therapeutic protein.

Lugo says the RNA can be encapsulated in different delivery vectors, including the lipid nanoparticles that are used in mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines. But unlike with those vaccines, protein expression is turned on only in cells with target RNA that corresponds to a disease state or specific cell type.

Lugo won’t say precisely which therapeutic areas the small team of seven full-time employees will focus on first. But she says they see the technology as being broadly applicable, including delivering cytotoxic drugs to cancer cells and delivering ligands and antibodies to “undruggable” proteins.

“We find our design space is really broad,” she says.
