• Roughly speaking, a conclusion is a summary of your essay. List your main arguments and restate the thesis with some development.
• The title is not the same as the topic because the latter is an assignment directing your thoughts. It’s “an advertisement” of your text, so make it brief and interesting.

How to Attract Tourists Essay

It is a frequent task as it trains your critical thinking. This essay explains how to bring tourists to a country or city for the benefit of both.

You can discuss the following strategies:

• Mark your key attractions on maps and streets. Make them visible and easily found, using way markers and signs. It makes your place tourist-friendly.

Describing a Tourist Attraction

In the IELTS Speaking Part 2 , you may be asked to describe a place. In fact, this is a very common thing to see on the cue card . One of the common topics is being asked to describe a tourist attraction. It may be someplace you wish to visit, or someplace you have already visited. But how can you describe a tourist attraction?

The Cue Card

For this part of the test, you will be given a cue card. On the cue card there will be things for you to talk about. You must talk about each of these items, with the total speech lasting 1-2 minutes. You have one minute to prepare. Your IELTS Speaking Part 2 cue card may look like this:

Describe a tourist attraction that you have visited. You should say What the attraction was When you visited it Why you went there And say whether you enjoyed the visit or not

It may be different, so pay attention to the exact words used. You need to talk about all parts, so don’t forget anything. It is helpful to make notes about each section if you have time – maybe just a word of vocabulary you want to remember.

Choosing a Subject to Talk About

One of the hardest things for an IELTS student is quickly choosing a subject to talk about in the IELTS Speaking Part 2. Honestly, even a native speaker might find this difficult! If someone asked me a really obscure question, it might take me a long time to plan out a good response! However, the key to success in this part of the exam is making a quick choice and then planning a talk accordingly.

For topics like travel and places, you should have no difficulty choosing. Think of some famous locations around the world :

• the Eiffel Tower
• London Bridge
• the Acropolis
• the Pyramids
• the Great Wall of China

and so on…

Just pick one that you can think of and then plan your talk. Don’t waste time choosing a place.

Vocabulary for Tourist Attractions

If you have chosen a building to discuss, then you should take a look at my guide to vocabulary for buildings and structures as it should be very helpful. Make sure that you are able to describe the basic features of a building adequately. Think about its physical features as well as its location. What about colours? How about some adjectives to describe the impression it left on you or you think it would leave:

• magnificent
• overwhelming
• fascinating

Of course, don’t just describe what the building was like (or is like). Remember that you need to devote your time to the exact instructions on the cue card. If it is asking you just for your experiences, then perhaps you may not need to do much description of the actual place. Also, remember that a tourist attraction may not be a building! It could describe a waterfall, a beach, or a river.

Examine the Question

In all parts of the IELTS Speaking Exam it is really important that you pay attention to the question and answer appropriately. Don’t think, “It’s about a tourist attraction!” and then freely talk about tourism. You need to answer the question exactly as it was intended.

Let’s look at the question again, and highlight key features:

Ok, so what are we being asked to do? We need to talk about a tourist attraction (ie a famous building, a museum or gallery, or a place of natural beauty). We need to firstly explain it – and this is where you can give some details. Then you should talk about the actual visit – when and why. Finally, explain whether you enjoyed it or not.

Sample Answer

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to visit Victoria Falls. This is a giant natural waterfall in Africa, considered one of the greatest sights in the world. It’s located on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, so you can view it from either side. I travelled through Zimbabwe by train in order to reach it. The journey took a long time but it was worthwhile. I had heard about Victoria Falls during my childhood and always wanted to visit because it seemed so magnificent to me. You often see it in books and movies, and it appears like this magical place that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world. When you are about fifty miles away you can already see and hear it because it is so loud and the water vapor goes so high into the atmosphere. Nearby, it is just stunning to be close to this phenomenal spectacle . I really enjoyed my time there, but actually it was very expensive. That didn’t ruin my experience, but it would have been nicer to enjoy it without worry about the cost so much.

5. The Yellow Mountains near Shanghai — Legendary Wonders

Arguably, urban tourism has become the most recent phenomena in the world today. United States have invested many resources to the development of urban tourism. As a matter of fact, many US cities are employing various strategies to attract tourists. According to Judd’, United States cities employing strategies such as refurbishing rundown areas, developing a new brand image, building malls for shopping, creating carousal zones, as well as advertizing for conference business. In general perspective, these strategies implemented to attract tourists in the cities translate into social and economic success. Cities in United States attract tourists virtually by marketing attractive images as well as marketing institutions that deal with tourist industry composition. In every economy, infrastructure facilities are very crucial. US cities have focused on investing in constantly infrastructure in order to attract tourists. Moreover, policies that distress the development of city infrastructure have been eliminated. This move promoted a lot of local public investments into the cities. Unites States cities are building and subsidizing, elaborate and advance infrastructures to support tourists and local recreation (Judd, 1995). The introduction of US Tourist Week is also another way that cities have used to attract tourism. This helped in attracting tourists to the United States. Moreover, cities have become more professionalized; this means that they have perfected the art of being organized through the improvement entrepreneurs and organizational skills. United States cities have employed advertisement in projecting the image of the cities towards tourists. Some of the easy used in advertisement to attract tourists include the use of path-breaking books, physical artifacts, as well as songs (Judd, 1995). Projection of place identity is also critical in ensuring that ordinary places are transformed into extraordinary places to tourist world. Also, United States cities utilize the art of photographing in presenting the image of their cities and scenery to local and international tourists. Sports are also one of the ways cities attract tourist. The use of festival malls has become a trend in the move to attract tourists. Many cities are increasingly competing in the construction of festival malls, with intent to attract tourists. Other recreational activities used to attract tourists include casino gambling. Cities have also introduced the carousal zones; this is part of tourism space within the central cities. It is composed of topless bars, strip clubs, pornography and sells sex stores (Judd, 1995). These zones are unstable since they are displaced by luxury office building and hotels, which add value to the image of the city.

Susan Backlinie, Swimmer Who Was First Victim in ‘Jaws,’ Dies at 77

Ms. Backlinie, a stunt woman, appeared in the terrifying opening scene of the 1975 blockbuster in which a great white shark attacks.

The actress and stunt woman Susan Backlinie, whose portrayal of a violent death as the first shark attack victim in the opening scene of the blockbuster movie “Jaws” terrified moviegoers, died on Saturday at her home in California. She was 77.

Her agent, Sean Clark, confirmed the death, saying that she had suffered a heart attack. He did not specify where in California she lived.

“Jaws,” the 1975 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, memorably features Ms. Backlinie in a scene in which she played a skinny-dipper, Chrissie Watkins, who runs along the beach and dives into the water for a nighttime swim.

The placid scene is shattered as she is suddenly pulled under the water. She screams while being violently thrashed by an unseen great white shark and tries desperately to cling to a clanging buoy only to be pulled below the water one final time.

For the scene, Ms. Backlinie was secured to a harness, according to The Daily Jaws , a website devoted to “the phenomenon, history, legacy and craft” of “Jaws.” The Palm Beach Post reported that Ms. Backlinie was wearing a pair of jeans with metal plates stitched into the sides with cables attached.

“To create the effect of being pulled through the water, Susan was tethered to a line anchored to the ocean floor beneath her and deliberately left unaware of when she would be submerged initially, aiming to elicit a more authentic surprise from her,” The Daily Jaws reported.

In an interview with The Post in 2017, Ms. Backlinie recalled Mr. Spielberg telling her, “When your scene is done, I want everyone under the seats with the popcorn and bubble gum.”

She said, “I think we did that.”

In “Jaws: The Inside Story” documentary , Mr. Spielberg described the sequence as “one of the most dangerous” stunts.

“She was actually being tugged left and right by 10 men on one rope and 10 men on the other back to the shore, and that’s what caused her to move like that,” he said.

Richard Dreyfuss, who starred in the movie as the oceanographer Matt Hooper, explained in the documentary how Ms. Backlinie and Mr. Spielberg had added to the terror of the scene by later recording her screams.

Mr. Spielberg “had her tilt her head back and he poured water down her throat while she screamed, which is now known as waterboarding,” Mr. Dreyfuss said.

Ms. Backlinie worked with Mr. Spielberg again in the 1979 parody war film “ 1941,” in which she spoofed her “Jaws” character by taking a late-night swim. As the suspenseful score from “Jaws” played, she encountered the rising periscope of a Japanese submarine instead of a shark.

Susan Backlinie was born on Sept. 1, 1946. At age 10, when she was living in West Palm Beach, Fla., she swam for miles off the coast and in local pools, The Post reported. In high school, she was a cheerleader and a state freestyle swimming champ.

She performed as a mermaid at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, a tourist attraction on Florida’s west coast, and eventually moved to California.

Ms. Backlinie is survived by her husband, Harvey Swindall, according to Mr. Clark.

After “Jaws,” she continued to work in films, appearing in the horror movie “Day of the Animals” (1977), and as a water ballet performer in Jim Henson’s “The Great Muppet Caper” (1981). She also appeared in an episode of the stunt television series “The Fall Guy” in 1982.

But it was the opening scene of “Jaws” for which she would be best remembered.

In the interview with The Post, she recalled how fans who attended movie conventions talked to her about their fear of swimming because of that scene.

“One of the main comments I get from everybody is, ‘You know you kept me out of the water,’” she said.
