JILLA MOVIE REVIEW
Pongal festivities in Tamil Nadu may commence in a couple of days but the carnival begins with Jilla, one of the most anticipated movies of the year with Ilayathalapathy Vijay partnering with Malayalam super star Mohanlal under Neason’s directorial baton. Jilla in general parlance denotes a district but it also seems to suggest someone who leads a group with a lot of mojo and spunk and Vijay effortlessly fits into this title. This Vijay’s Pongal offering to his fans is all about the conflict of good against evil and their upshots. According to Hindu religious beliefs, the coexistence of Shiva and Shakthi is highly pivotal and director Neason has utilized this surmise as the foundation to weave his tale. Mohanlal is ruling Madurai with his foster son Vijay. A move of his becomes a turning point for the son-dad duo and the cascading effect of this decision is Jilla all about. Having two equally popular and established actors in the cast list warrants perfect etching of their characters and Neason has satisfied this big time. The artist’s understanding of their roles and their experience comes much handy in the effective portrayal of their respective characters with a lot of aplomb. It should have been a field day for Vijay as the actor dazzles in action, comedy, dance and emotions. Alternately funny and serious, emotional and steel-strong, Vijay delivers it all. He is known for his comic timing and his combination with Soori has worked out well for the film. In fact Vijay’s body language in the lighter scenes is perfect with a relaxed and casual feel about it. Nothing new can be said about Vijay’s dancing prowess as the actor dances like a dream delivering cute emotions on the way. A dignified portrayal by veteran Mohanlal who conveys a lot through the nano twitches of his facial muscles. A legend indeed! The intro song of this duo is a rocker with the cute banging of each other on the shoulders which kind of becomes their signature style in important scenes. The chemistry of Vijay and Mohanlal sure is a highlight of the film. Out of the other supporting cast members, it is Soori who stands out and the comedian is shining more and more with his ideal timing of dialogues and performance. The combination of Vijay-Kajal-Soori in comedy sequences brings out the laughs, a significant one being the scene where Vijay teaches NCC cadets the power of self defense. However the meeting of the bride Kajal by Vijay and team is silly and the episode could have been done in a different format. But the scene preceding it when Vijay shows the picture of Kajal to his family members is a smile inducer. There is a huge contingent of supporting cast in the form of Poornima Bhagyaraj, Sampath, Ravi Maria, Thambi Ramiah, Mahat, Nivedha Thomas, Pradeep Rawat and Vidyulekha who do their roles with the expected sincerity. Imman’s tracks are good but the presence of Jingunamani and Eppa Mama Treatu does not offer enough validation although they are peppy and come across as a good stand alone numbers. Verasa Pogayilae is interestingly conceptualized and choreographed with most of the song done in a slow motion layout. Kandangi is melodious and shot well in Japan. One unit that has worked over time in Jilla is definitely action department under Silva who is also seen in a small cameo. The high octane fight sequences are done with a lot of punch with Vijay scoring brownie points. The same cannot be said about graphic sequences which are tacky in Jilla. Rajeevan’s art designs are sumptuous and boast of quality work. Punch dialogues are aplenty in Jilla and bring out the desired emotions. But the interval block dialogues could have been more impactful. At two hours and fifty minutes, Jilla is lengthy and the editor and director should have collaborated better to reduce it to make it tauter. The charismatic screen presence of Vijay and Mohanlal, few enjoyable musical tracks and comedy scenes and power packed action sequences mark Neason’s Jilla that travels on a standard template and satiates Vijay’s fans.

Jilla, the 2014 Tamil hit is dubbed into Telugu with the same title. Starring Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal in lead roles, this movie has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Sivayya (Mohan Lal) is a ruthless local goon in Vijayawada. He adopts Shakti (Vijay), son of his right hand who dies during a local fight. Sivayya decides to make Shakti a police officer to continue his criminal activities.
Shakti reluctantly takes up the role of a police officer. During his tenure, Shakti regrets his misdeeds and decides to follow the path of honesty. He also requests Sivayya to change but everything goes in vain as differences arise between the both of them.
How will the story unfold from here ? Will both Sivayya and Shakti re-unite again ? That forms the rest of the story.
Plus points :-
The major attraction of the movie is the relationship between the father and his adopted son. The director portrayed the emotions quite well and particularly the scenes before the interval are executed nicely. Also, a couple of twists in the second half elevate the movie to a decent extent.
Mohan Lal does a superb job and shouldered the movie with a terrific performance. His look and screen presence gives an added advantage to the proceedings. Vijay also did complete justice to his character and his top notch acting in mass scenes will be a treat to the audience.
The last half an hour before the interval is the major highlight of the movie. The unexpected twists before the climax and Vijay’s role as a police officer will thoroughly entertain the audience.
Minus points :-
Although this movie was a smash hit in Tamil, it lacks certain elements to woo the Telugu audience. After the initial half an hour, the tempo in the story slows down completely till the pre-interval block. The scenes between Vijay and Mohan Lal in the second half needed a much better execution.
Also, the scenes between Vijay and Kajal are not convincing and Kajal’s character needed a lot of establishment. The comedy track between Brahmanandam and other Telugu actors was not executed perfectly and is a total minus for the movie. The abrupt ending is also a big drawback for the movie.
Technical aspects :-
Director NT Neason did an ok job with his execution. Music given by D.Iman impresses the audience only to some extent but his background score is quite good.
Cinematography by Ganesh Rajavelu is good as he captured the mood of the scenes in a beautiful way. Telugu dialogues written by Shashank Vennelakanti are decent. Editing is also OK.
The crazy combination of Vijay and Mohan Lal, did wonders in Tamil. But the same magic could not be repeated in the Telugu version. The acting showcased by both the superstars is very impressive. But the routine comedy, unconvincing romantic track, and below par songs are a big minus for the film. Overall, Jilla is just another regular commercial entertainer which will only impress the mass audience.

Jilla Review - Vijay's District

Jilla Review - A District for Vijay fans
Bharath Vijayakumar
Vijay's recent selection of films have been refreshing for the general movie goer. Vijay fans too would be happy with this. But for the hardcore fans who thrive on the magic connect that they have with their idol, the chance to scream their throats out and to revel when their star walks in slomo to a catchy BGM - here is Jilla for you.
Jilla has got a decent one liner at it's core. Kudos to the team for keeping it under wraps until now. Mohanlal's character is the surprise package and this has been neatly concealed even in the trailers. Jilla relies on the relationship between it's two principal characters.
This is a typical Vijay film. You might not see anything particularly great in the performance of the lead star. But these sort of films are a package. You replace Vijay and the film would fall flat on it's face. This is Vijay's homeground and is a throwback to his pre-Kavalan days (the period which actually made him the darling of the masses but which started backfiring after it was overdone). The star has his fans on a rampage without doing much. He looks so young and is agile as ever. Comedy is certainly one of his forte and one hopes he does a full length comedy soon.
Mohanlal's role is a mixed bag. It might not do justice to the man's talent but it is the pivot around which the film revolves. An actor with a lesser image and Jilla would definitely not be what it is now. This casting coup is the major highlight of Jilla as the film is essentially about these two people.
Kajal has very little to do but is bubbly and likeable as ever. Soori's comedy punches click most of the time. The others have very little to do except Sampath towards the climax.
Music and Technical team:
Imman's success streak continues. Verasa Pogaiyile and Kandangi are the picks. The 'Jilla' theme track should be reverberating in the ears of Vijay fans. But this could have been used more judiciously in the film. Stunts are what you would expect from a mass entertainer but thankfully with less damage to your ear drums. The production values at a few places are however tacky.
Hits - Naesan had both the enviable and difficult task of casting Vijay and Mohanlal together. He has done justice to certain extent. While the movie is an out and out Vijay flick, the presence of Mohanlal actually does a lot to the undercurrent tension in the film. The first hour pretty much sails through using comedy and the conflict is brought about at the right time before the interval. Naesan also has done well to keep the punch dialogues at bay. They are few and far in between. Despite being packed with cliches', Naesan moves things at a fair speed and you are never left to ponder much.
Misses - A couple of comedy scenes are a bit crude and bordering on obscene. The second half could have been crisper. Though not many scenes that will put you off it lacks the goosebump moments that you expect in a hero centric film. The lengthy duration of the film may affect it's chances of multiple viewing. The picturisation of Jingunamani number is such a sore. A foot tapping number is wasted on screen. A lot more could have been done in the second half to heighten the tension in the drama. But melodrama takes center stage though it is kept in check.
Bottomline :
people who like realistic movies, please stay away - Jilla may not be for you. Jilla would not disappoint people who like to soak in unadulterated masala and for the others who would watch a masala entertainer as a guilty pleasure.

Jilla Review
Behind The Movie Jilla: Two of the biggest Super Stars from South Indian cinema Mohan Lal and Vijay appearing on one screen can be nothing less than a festival for Tamil movie lovers. Directed by RT Neason with Kajal Agarwal as heroine and Imman scoring the music, let us see how good is Jilla to hold the Box Office fort in Tollywood?
In the Movie Jilla: A ruthless and dreaded Vijayawada based don Shivayya (Mohan Lal) adopts one of his follower’s son named as Shakti. In no time, Shakti becomes real strength of Shivayya who continues his criminal activities unstoppably. Shakti is allergic towards Police department and a grown up Shakti (Vijay) lives in shadow of father like Shivayya obeying his orders. However, Shivayya plans to make Shakti a Police Officer so that he would be of use for their illegal businesses. Although reluctant early, Shakti becomes Police just to see his father happy. Meanwhile, Shakti also falls in love with sub-ordinate (Kajal Agarwal).
A ghastly land mafia incident by Shivayya’s group leads to brutal deaths of many innocent people and Shakti is enlightened here to transform into honest, sincere Police. Automatically, Shakti is held in a complicated lock of whether to perform his Police duties or show his faithfullness towards criminal father Shivayya? However, he follows the earlier and is on a mission to reform Shivayya. How did Shivayya’s family of one daughter and a son (Mahat Raghavendra) enter into main story? How Adi Keshavulu (Sampat Raj) betrayed Shivayya taking story to climax are rest.
Values of the Movie Jilla: For a commercial script, every element has to be balanced within an integral part of narration. In this regards, RT Neason came out a winner making ‘Jilla’ a perfect commercial entertainer with nothing new and nothing old. His screenplay was watertight and hasn’t left any loose ends which could have distracted the overall impact. There is a big span in the story starting from childhood of Shakti to his reunification with Shivayya. So, there is lots of space for summating as many sub threads as possible. Neason worked on each and every thread with nearing perfection. Despite simple boredom creeps in second half with lag in narration, Vijay and Mohan Lal’s magnificent screen presence counterbalances. Ganesh Rajavelu’s cinematography is super cool upholding the strengths in casting and their performances. Don Max’s editing could have been a little sharp. Yet, the way whole story is executed has left no big pitfalls. Dialogues are of decent quality for a dubbing film. Imman’s background musical score is reverberating concisely filling a soul. Songs were neatly packaged with couple of melodies and high energetic mass numbers. Vijay and Mohan Lal together in first song is a treat to watch. Production values of Kumar Reddy and Prasad are top in quality.
On to performances, I am seeing it for the first time Vijay keeping up a distinguished show with variety of emotions exceptionally portrayed. Especially, the pre interval block displayed the best in him. Confrontation scenes with Mohan Lal are also well handled by Vijay. Obviously, dances and fights, Vijay tore apart. Mohan Lal is the real prestige of film. Clad in white and white, he commands the rest with a mind blowing grace in body language. Mohan Lal although becomes passive and negative shaded in second half, his metamorphosis into a good human being by climax isn’t properly justified. Kajal Agarwal is more or less left for glamour, songs although done good job in associating with Vijay in tough times. Soori and Brahmanandam’s comedy is not worthwhile. Sampat Raj fitted well in cunning character. Mahat Raghavendra’s tragic end took emotional note on peak. Pradeep Rawat as top cop added more to the ritual. Rest does not need big mention.
Out of the Movie Jilla: For all those formula movie lovers who enjoyed ‘Bahubali’ and willing to come out of B-Mania, here comes ‘Jilla’ at right time to entertain you. The film is made as a complete family, mass-masala package with action, romance, sentiment, melodrama, emotions and less humor. Without experimenting to supplement something new into script, Neason followed a beaten path and was hurried pulling the movie to climax without any rationale pretext. This could serve a drawback exactly like what we have seen in rushing climax for ‘Bahubali.’
Above all, if you enjoy a film like film impartial about the nature of being a straight one or a dubbed one, ‘Jilla’ is a worth to watch. Neason’s backbreaking work on script with logical connections taken care of can keep this movie above regular commercial principles. Despite a predictable story format, it’s the buoyant screenplay does the trick. Establishment of rift between Vijay, Mohan Lal in pre interval block is dealt supremely. That can be the real measure of character in Neason. Into second half, Neason became paltry with new sub plots opening at frequent intervals.
It’s the strong content, adequate execution, uphill battle in scripting and fabulous Vijay-Mohan Lal pair made us to go for 3 stars to ‘Jilla.’ Well, our rating of ‘Jilla’ has no commonalty to compare with ‘Bahubali’ (we gave 3 stars for this one too). If the similar magic is repeated with a Telugu remake and with two Telugu top heroes, ‘Jilla’ would have been a real blockbuster. Tollywood missed a great deal.
Commercially, ‘Jilla’ has fair chances to stand at Box Office if makers promote the film aggressively else another dubbing commercial entertainer is to go wasted.
Cinejosh Verdict of Jilla: Commercial Entertainer.

Shakthi, adopted by the influential crime boss Sivan, serves as his devoted right-hand man, embodying loyalty and power. The story’s foundation rests on Shakthi’s resentment towards the police, fueled by his father’s tragic death at the hands of a law enforcement officer. The narrative takes a compelling twist as Sivan faces a challenge from a new police commissioner, leading him to urge Shakthi to become an IPS officer. This decision marks a turning point for Shakthi, as he navigates a path from criminal allegiance to an honest law enforcer, causing a seismic shift in his worldview.
The film shines in its portrayal of conflicting loyalties, ethical dilemmas, and the complexities of familial bonds. The evolving relationship between Shakthi and Sivan forms the film’s emotional core, as their contrasting ideologies clash and intertwine. “Jilla” is further elevated by its masterfully executed action sequences and standout performances, particularly by Mohanlal and Vijay. As the narrative unfolds, audiences are immersed in a riveting exploration of crime, justice, and the transformative power of personal choices within a world that blurs the lines between right and wrong.
The movie encapsulates the grit and tensions of Madurai’s criminal underworld, skillfully weaving a storyline that traverses both action-packed sequences and poignant character development. With its well-crafted narrative, memorable performances, and intricate exploration of morality, “Jilla” stands as an engaging cinematic experience that invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of human nature and the forces that shape our destinies in a challenging world.
