Top PhD degree for young research talents

The graduate program CiM-IMPRS is a cooperation between the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine and five faculties of the University of Münster and offers students exceptional scientific training opportunities in the field of molecular and cellular biosciences with a focus on imaging.

The close collaboration between the Max Planck Institute and the University of Münster is also reflected in the name CiM-IMPRS: " CiM " stands for the Cells in Motion Interfaculty Centre, which brings together more than 90 research groups from the life and natural sciences as well as mathematics and computer science. They work together in the interdisciplinary topic area of "Cell Dynamics and Imaging," which is a research focus at WWU. " IMPRS " stands for the MPI's "International Max Planck Research School", whose research focus is molecular biomedicine.

The PhD degree program in the above disciplines is open to both German and foreign students. The entire course program is held in English .

The program includes lectures, seminars and workshops in the areas of cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, immunology, infection biology, genetics, and bioinformatics. As integral part of this graduate program, students use cutting-edge imaging techniques for studying the cell and/or organism.

Through courses on communication, project planning and management, personnel management and business administration, the PhD students acquire additional skills that are important for a successful career in science.

2 PhD positions at the International Max Planck Research School for Living Matter

The International Max Planck Research School for Living Matter: from molecules to dynamics (IMPRS-LM) invites applications from talented and motivated PhD candidates of all nationalities to join the independent research groups of Sidney Becker and Peng Wu.

Project 1 (within the research group of Sidney Becker )

Extension of the genetic alphabet – creating novel base pairs

The successful candidate will work on a multidisciplinary project on the chemical synthesis and incorporation of unnatural genetic building blocks in DNA and RNA to create novel base pairs. The expansion of the genetic alphabet could help us to understand why the natural genetic system has selected the four building blocks adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C) and thymine (T) in the course of evolution. Beyond enhancing our evolutionary insights, extending the genetic code offers avenues for molecular diversification and increased functionality across DNA, RNA, and proteins. Such advancements hold promise for pioneering biological systems and innovative biotechnological applications such as imaging or sequencing.

Project 2 (within the research group of  Peng Wu )

Small molecules modulate RNA post-transcriptional modifications

The pervasive interactions between RNAs and RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) regulate numerous aspects of cellular biology and metabolism. Dysregulation of RBPs and structured RNAs have been associated with various human diseases including cancers, infections, and neurodegenerative disorders. However, the exact regulatory mechanism for the majority of such RBPs is not clear, and limited strategies are available to address RBPs with chemical matters. In this project, we will build upon our ongoing efforts in the identification of small-molecule modulators (inhibitors and activators) of RBPs that chemically modify mRNAs, so that a series of proximity-inducing bifunctional small molecules (e.g. PROTAC and RIBOTACs) can be synthesized and evaluated (biochemical/biophysical/cellular assays) as new chemical modalities to realize targeted modifications on RBPs and RNAs. The project aims to contribute to the emerging forefront research field of chemical modulations at the post-transcriptional level, for biological and therapeutic applications. The successful candidate will be involved in either one of the following two directions: (1) For candidates with a biochemistry/molecular biology/cell biology background: assay development and biological evaluations; (2) For candidates with a synthetic/organic/medicinal chemistry background: design and synthesis of small molecules and bifunctional molecules.
