2023 Incoming PhD students standing along the entry stairs of 1 Washington Square North with Director Rohini Pahwa

NYU Silver School of Social Work’s PhD program prepares students to become leading researchers and educators in the promotion of social justice and the health and well-being of marginalized communities nationally and globally.

Our intensive doctoral training competitively positions graduates for top-tier academic and research opportunities—such as faculty positions at leading research universities—cultivating the next wave of independent investigators, scholars, and social work leaders. Building on Silver’s nationally recognized strength in intervention and implementation research and our focus on addressing inequities, the PhD program prepares students to make their own unique contributions to the field of social welfare.

Our rigorous coursework educates students in classic and contemporary theory, cutting-edge quantitative, qualitative and mixed methodologies, and specialized learning in their substantive areas. The opportunity to take electives within the larger university allows students to explore further their areas and methodologies in an interdisciplinary classroom. NYU Silver also prepares students to be educators through training, including in anti-racist pedagogies, and hands-on experience teaching BSW and MSW level courses.

At the heart of our program is the mentored research practicum offering students the opportunity to put their learning into practice. NYU Silver PhD students are paired from day one with a research mentor as part of our  personalized mentoring program , helping them develop competencies in core research, scholarship, and teaching areas.  NYU Silver  Faculty  are renowned for their expertise in several key research areas, including racial and social justice, behavioral health services, child welfare, and aging. Being part of a large Global Network University and located in the diverse and dynamic city of New York, NYU Silver offers an unparalleled environment for the study of areas critical to local, national and global well-being.

In fact, PhD Program Director Dr.  Rohini Pahwa was recently awarded a  five-year, $3.1 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health  to gain insight into the factors that influence the social networks and and mental health services use of Black and Latinx people with serious mental illnesses.

We have a thriving Ph.D. program with approximately 80 full-time Ph.D. students hailing from all corners of the world. Most full-time Ph.D. students have scholarships that cover tuition and provide a monthly stipend. Admission is highly competitive. We seek creative, articulate students with undergraduate and master's degrees from top universities worldwide. Our  current research strengths  include data management and analysis, cybersecurity, computer games, visualization, web search, graphics, vision and image processing, and theoretical computer science.

This degree program offers interested students opportunities to do their research abroad, under the supervision of faculty at NYU Shanghai or  NYU Abu Dhabi .

  • View the Computer Science Ph.D. program flyer
  • Admissions requirements for the Ph.D. Program.
  • Find out more about general  Admission Requirements .

To receive a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, a student must:

  • satisfy a breadth course requirement, intended to ensure broad knowledge of computer science,
  • satisfy a depth requirement, consisting of an oral qualifying exam presentation with a written report, to ensure the student's ability to do research,
  • submit a written thesis proposal and make an oral presentation about the proposal,
  • write a Ph.D. thesis that must be approved by a dissertation guidance committee and present an oral thesis defense, and
  • satisfy all School of Engineering requirements for the Ph.D. degree, as described in the NYU Tandon School of Engineering bulletin, including graduate study duration, credit points, GPA, and time-to-degree requirements.

Upon entering the program, each student will be assigned an advisor who will guide them in formulating an individual study plan directing their course choice for the first two years. The department will hold an annual Ph.D. Student Assessment Meeting, in which all Ph.D. students will be formally reviewed.

Note: for pre-fall 2015 Ph.D. students, please see the pre-fall 2015 Ph.D. Curriculum.

Program Requirements

Details about Breadth and Depth Requirements, Thesis Proposal and Presentation, and Thesis Defense can be found in the NYU Bulletin.

Program Details

Each incoming Ph.D. student will be assigned to a research advisor, or to an interim advisor, who will provide academic advising until the student has a research advisor. The advisor will meet with the student when the student enters the program to guide the student in formulating an Individual Study Plan. The purpose of the plan is to guide the student’s course choice for the first two years in the program and to ensure that the student meets the breadth requirements. The plan may also specify additional courses to be taken by the student in order to acquire necessary background and expertise. Subsequent changes to the plan must be approved by the advisor.

Sample Plan of Study

In order to obtain a Ph.D. degree, a student must complete a minimum of 75 credits of graduate work beyond the BS degree, including at least 21 credits of dissertation. A Master of Science in Computer Science may be transferred as 30 credits without taking individual courses into consideration. Other graduate coursework in Computer Science may be transferred on a course-by-course basis. Graduate coursework in areas other than Computer Science can be transferred on a course-by-course basis with approval of the Ph.D. Committee (PHDC). The School of Engineering places some limits on the number and types of transfer credits that are available. Applications for transfer credits must be submitted for consideration before the end of the first semester of matriculation.

All Ph.D. students will be formally reviewed each year in a Ph.D. Student Assessment Meeting. The review is conducted by the entire CSE faculty and includes at least the following items (in no particular order):

  • All courses taken, grades received, and GPAs.
  • Research productivity: publications, talks, software, systems, etc.
  • Faculty input, especially from advisors and committee members.
  • Student’s own input.
  • Cumulative history of the student's progress.

As a result of the review, each student will be placed in one of the following two categories, by vote of the faculty:

  • In Good Standing: The student has performed well in the previous semester and may continue in the Ph.D. program for one more year, assuming satisfactory academic progress is maintained.
  • Not in Good Standing: The student has not performed sufficiently well in the previous year. The consequences of not being in good standing will vary, and may include being placed on probation, losing RA/GA/TA funding, or not being allowed to continue in the Ph.D. program.

Following the review, students will receive formal letters which will inform them of their standing. The letters may also make specific recommendations to the student as to what will be expected of them in the following year. A copy of each student’s letter will be placed in the student’s file.

Master's Student: I am in the Critical, Curatorial, Conceptual Practices program (CCCP) at GSAPP Columbia. As the program is mainly focused on a discussion colloquium during the first year of the program, I think having a larger class than they are typically used to having had a negative effect on the quality of the discussions as not everyone would have the chance to speak. The one-on-one meetings held during office hours with the directors of the program is probably the most helpful time where you can get individual critique and guidance on your work and they are very accommodating with your schedule to make sure they meet your needs. ... Master's Student: I work full-time in order to try to receive tuition remission, however I am heavily taxed and for the months of November and December, I only earned $1000 for the entire month. Despite this, I still work to try to pay for school, but this has been unsustainable which leads me to the worst parts of my experience: it is impossible to work full-time while also meeting the requirements necessary to complete my degree and it is frustrating to be ineligible to participate in offerings from the school as a result of working. The best part of my experience has been in learning, being supported by professors, and being encouraged to think independently. I appreciate my experience. ... Read 230 reviews

Master's Student: Returning to school after over five years was daunting but it has become an incredibly fruitful endeavor. My first course was Adirondack Field Studies, a month-long summer field course at the SUNY ESF Ranger School. I was exposed to forest mensuration, land navigation, and GPS use, all in the field, which culminated in a capstone project, in inventorying a 16-acre parcel in the Adirondacks. This past semester I’ve embarked on different graduate writing projects; researching topics to further my understanding. I had the opportunity to create a literary review and annotated bibliography on fire as a forest management tool in northeastern America, with a focus on Indigenous land use history of the region. Alum: The Journalism program at The New School was experimental but also deeply grounded in mainstream methods of sourcing, materializing and communicating news and information. The best part was the ability to take eccentric classes, such as urban ecology and eco-feminism courses, that were connected back to my program. I think that this freedom allowed me to connect more to the information being taught and future career in this field. The worst part was that there weren't solid mentors to lead all of us through this hard work and be prepared for the tough world of news. Community engagement is a priority for this year’s class of aspiring scientists who graduate Sunday; they graduated high school during the height of the pandemic

By Ellen Goldbaum

Release Date: May 22, 2024

BUFFALO, N.Y. — For aspiring young scientists who graduated on Sunday, the biomedical sciences graduation ceremony of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo was the first they got to celebrate. Their high school graduations in 2020 never took place because they occurred during the height of the pandemic.

That experience and others that occurred during and since the pandemic may be contributing to what Jacobs School professors are seeing as a surge in social awareness and community engagement among these graduates.

During the university-wide Celebration of Student Academic Excellence on May 2, 17 Jacobs School students were recognized , including many who have excelled both inside and outside the lab.

Motivated to make a difference

“As a group, they are just super motivated to make a difference,” says Jennifer A. Surtees, PhD , associate dean for undergraduate education and STEM outreach, and professor of biochemistry in the Jacobs School. “I’m sure that the way they see the world has been very much influenced by living through the pandemic, by the George Floyd murder and subsequent protests for social justice, and just by having their eyes opened to what’s going on in the world and in the community.”

They are, Surtees says, “unusually accomplished.”

Luke Hess is one of them. He graduates with a BS in biochemistry , and as recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program scholarship, one of the most competitive in the U.S., will pursue a PhD in cancer biology at the University of Michigan.

A student researcher in Surtees’ lab and at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center under Katerina Gurova, MD, PhD, Hess loves to talk about his science, but he’s been equally involved in the community. At UB, he discovered Alternative Spring Break , which provides opportunities for students to perform service at organizations in Western New York.

“I was doing service at the Big Big Table, a pay-as-you-can café and was inspired by how personable and joyous the staff were when talking with patrons,” Hess says. “I watched them crack jokes and forge unbreakable bonds with the community they served.

“I realized the ability to pursue an education is not about money, awards or publications,” he says, “but instead about serving the community in the best way I know possible.”

That made Hess want to inspire other students, so he became an alternative break leader, leading several successful trips during school breaks.

Hess was awarded the Dorothy M. Haas Community Engagement Award, honoring students completing undergraduate studies who have demonstrated a philosophy of servant leadership through their service and investment in the growth and development of others.

Lea Kyle, another biochemistry major, works in the lab of  Elizabeth A. Wohlfert, PhD , in the  Department of Microbiology and Immunology , where her research focuses on the impacts of chronic Toxoplasma gondii infection on muscle function and integrity.

One of four UB biosciences students who received a SUNY Chancellor’s Award, the highest honor SUNY gives to students, she was also a recipient of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship last year.

A native of Martville, New York, Kyle was a University Honors College Scholar.

She attributes her interest in community work to her mother’s passion for volunteering. “She introduced me to volunteer work at a young age and has always pushed me to strive for greatness, including pushing for the world as a whole to be better,” she says. “It forces me to think critically about what they teach us and question everything, asking why things have to be the way they are and how we can change it.”

She is pursuing a master’s in public health. “Eventually I will pursue a PhD in immunology and would love to work in the public sector to help fight infectious diseases in the U.S. and globally,” she says.

Sarah Bukhari, Bryan R. Renzoni and Rachel Esther Sanyu were also awarded the 2024 SUNY Chancellor’s Award.

Bukhari, a Grand Island native, won the outstanding biochemistry student award this year. She is volunteer coordinator and vice president of the largest student-run pre-health organization, the Association of Pre-Medical Students, and was awarded a Community Engagement micro-credential.

She received UB’s Visions of Social Justice Award, which honors students engaging in work that fosters human dignity and common humanity by promoting cross-cultural learning, interaction and education. She was recognized for co-founding, with another Jacobs School graduate, the Ignite Ilm Foundation , a non-profit focused on educational equity in Pakistan, which donates supplies to underprivileged schools throughout the Punjab region.

Bukhari has volunteered as an after-school tutor mentor and with Feedmore WNY.

She is also a dance coach and social media coordinator for the Pakistani Student Association.

Sanyu, an international student from Uganda, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacology and toxicology .

An Honors College Scholar, she conducted oncology research in the lab of Wendy Huss, PhD, at Roswell Park and at Johnson & Johnson, where she earned the 2023 Inspire Spotlight Award.

Sanyu founded a health care app called MedScript, a digital service addressing limitations in cross-country communication, learning and networking that hinder health care exchanges. She is the inaugural recipient of UB’s McCall MacBain Regional Award, a $10,000 scholarship recognizing engaged student leaders demonstrating “exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength and intellectual curiosity.”

Renzoni, of East Amherst, New York, majored in biochemistry. He was a University Honors College Presidential Scholar and Honors College Ambassador.

A BioXFEL Scholar, he has received multiple research positions and has contributed to the development of novel organic and organometallic compounds with applications as cancer therapies.

Renzoni served as a co-chair of the G14 Leadership Summit, president and executive adviser of UB ChemClub, and has helped lead The Enchords, UB’s all-gender a cappella group.

Bukhari and Kyle also completed UB’s Be the Impact Challenge, which challenges students to get involved in the local community while at the university. Recognized students have to have performed and tracked 500 hours of community service.

Hess says he’s grateful for his experience, required by his major, to work in a UB lab, while he also credits the UB’s Office of Student Engagement with helping him grow as a community leader.

“What’s special is the nurturing environment of UB’s Jacobs School,” he says. “The environment produced in the labs helped me gain confidence and feel open to trying things outside of my comfort zone. I would not trade my experience here for the world.”

Facing $16.5 million deficit, buffalo state university to cut 37 academic programs.

Buffalo State University will eliminate as many as 37 undergraduate and graduate programs to help ... [+] reduce a $16.5 deficit in its operating budget.

Higher education’s budget-cutting trend continues. Buffalo State University Interim President Bonita R. Durand announced on Thursday that the institution would need to take several steps to reduce its current $16.5 million budget deficit, caused in large measure by a 42% decline in student enrollment over the last decade. Buffalo State is part of the State University of New York System; its fall 2023 enrollment stood at just over 6,400 students.

As part of the plan, 37 degree programs , certification titles, concentrations, minors and certificates have been identified for deactivation and discontinuation. The university said those programs collectively enroll only 34 students, or 0.6 percent of the overall student population.

So far, 27 of the programs slated for elimination have been vetted through university processes and have either completed or are under review at the SUNY and state levels. Buffalo State said it will no longer be admitting students to these programs, but that all those who were currently enrolled will be able to complete their degrees. The other 10 programs are under review for deactivation by Spring 2025.

Included in the undergraduate major that will no longer be admitting new students are Afro-American Studies, Early Childhood Education, Design, French Education, Spanish Education and Urban Studies. Graduate programs that will be eliminated include master’s programs in Chemistry, Early Childhood Education, Physics, Applied and Computational Mathematics, and Urban Education.

Durand said the “Framework for Financial Sustainability plan” would also involve several other elements, including:

  • an increase in the university’s state appropriation,
  • enhanced student recruitment, including the addition of programs with opportunities for enrollment growth,
  • a greater emphases on student retention,
  • consolidation of staff positions to increase efficiency and reduce expenses; and
  • continuation of a 12-month, campus-wide hiring freeze and a phased retirement program.

Netflix’s new #1 movie is an overlooked, must-watch crime comedy thriller, reacher season 3 casts a villain that looks like he ate reacher.

The university also is introducing a one-time voluntary separation program with support from the Buffalo State Foundation.

In her address to the campus , Durand said the university’s original plan was to try to reduce most of the budget deficit through workforce attrition and a hiring freeze. However, because those tw0 measures had not yet yielded the financial gains that had been expected, additional steps became necessary.

“I am confident that our Buffalo State University community can both ensure our long-term financial sustainability while continuing to do what we do best: delivering a high-quality educational experience for our students,” Durand said in a university press release. “With the support of elected leadership, SUNY leadership, our community partners, our campus community and our Buffalo State family, we will solidify our role as a premier academic institution that meets students’ evolving needs for years to come.”

In their official pronouncements, system and faculty leaders signaled their support for the plan. “With support from historic levels of State investment, Interim President Durand has outlined a thoughtful, well-planned vision for Buffalo State that balances tough but necessary choices with creative thinking, putting the university in the best possible position to achieve long-term financial health and growth,” SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. said.

Ken Fujiuchi, Buffalo State College Senate Chair, added, "As Buffalo State University faces challenges, we remain committed to making important decisions through shared governance to ensure financial stability and progress. Interim President Durand's cooperative leadership and unwavering dedication to shared governance are invaluable as we work together toward a brighter future."

She Just Earned Her Doctorate at 17. Now, She’ll Go to the Prom.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II of Chicago made history as the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health at Arizona State University.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II stands at a lectern wearing a black cap and gown at Arizona State University’s commencement.

By Alexandra E. Petri

When Dorothy Jean Tillman II successfully defended her dissertation in November 2023 to earn her doctoral degree from Arizona State University, she couldn’t wait to share the news with her best friend.

“It was a surreal moment,” Dr. Tillman said, “because it was crazy I was doing it in the first place.”

Dr. Tillman, at only 17, became the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from Arizona State’s College of Health Solutions, all before she was eligible to vote. Earlier this month, Dr. Tillman, now 18, took part in Arizona State’s commencement ceremony and delivered remarks as the outstanding 2024 graduate at the College of Health Solution’s convocation.

Lesley Manson, program director for the doctorate of behavioral health at Arizona State and Dr. Tillman’s doctoral chair, said Dr. Tillman displayed extraordinary perseverance, hard work and dedication for her young age, tackling every challenge head-on.

“She can serve as a real role model,” Ms. Manson said.

Dr. Tillman, called D.J. by her family and friends, was an early bloomer. She grew up in Chicago and was home-schooled from a young age, first in a group setting through online classes, and then by her mother, Jimalita Tillman, a single parent with a background in community theater.

Dr. Tillman was part of a gifted program before transitioning to home-schooling. Jimalita Tillman continued her daughter on an accelerated track: By the time she was 8, she was taking high school classes. While most 9-year-olds were learning math and reading, Dr. Tillman was starting college online.

At the time, they lived with Jimalita Tillman’s mother, Dorothy Wright Tillman, a civil rights activist who worked alongside the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was a Chicago alderman. Dr. Tillman is her grandmother’s namesake (hence the II at the end of Dr. Tillman’s name).

During her early college days, Dr. Tillman’s classroom was often a Starbucks in Chicago, and her days began as soon it opened, she said. Her go-to order was an iced peach green tea with lemonade.

“Around the time when kids went to lunch, we’d be closing the computer,” said Dr. Tillman, who said her discipline and focus come from her grandmother.

Because of her age, Dr. Tillman lived at home while pursuing her higher education, and most of her coursework was online — a challenge for a self-described social butterfly. “I do love meeting new people and talking to people and understanding them and how their brains work,” she said. She found other ways to stay connected with friends through after-school activities.

At 10, she earned her associate degree in psychology at the College of Lake County in Illinois. At 12, she received her Bachelor of Science in humanities at Excelsior College in New York, and at 14, she earned a Master of Science from Unity College in Maine. She chose those fields because they can help scientists “understand why people treat the environment the way they do,” she told Time for Kids in a July 2020 interview.

Ellen Winner, a professor of psychology at Boston College and the author of “Gifted Children: Myths and Realities,” said that children like Dr. Tillman have a motivational intensity she calls a “rage to master.”

“One of the reasons they push themselves is they have a high, innate ability of some kind, and so learning, in whatever they are gifted in, comes easily to them and it’s very pleasurable,” she said. Schools are often not equipped for such gifted children, she added, which may lead parents to home-school their children. The trade-off, she and some experts say, is missing out on socialization and learning with children their age.

“There’s no perfect solution to kids like this,” Ms. Winner said.

Jimalita Tillman said she was sure her daughter was finished with higher education after earning her master’s degree. Dr. Tillman had just launched an organization to support Black youth in Chicago interested in STEM and the arts called the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute. It was 2020, just after the beginning of the pandemic.

She was surprised when her daughter said she wanted to pursue her doctorate, and even tried to dissuade Dr. Tillman. But Dr. Tillman wanted to help young people with their mental health. She told her mother to trust her.

“I had to follow her lead,” Jimalita Tillman, 42, said.

Dr. Tillman was accepted into the management concentration at Arizona State’s College of Health Solutions, an online doctorate program. Her thesis on developing programs to reduce the stigma for college students seeking mental health services was based on a study she conducted for an in-person internship at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Dr. Tillman hopes her story resonates with girls who are talkative, outgoing “out-there kind of girls who are trying to figure themselves out but are very smart.”

“I want them to see someone who has taken that energy, sparkle and excitement and packaged it in a way that is classy and beautiful,” she said.

Dr. Tillman may now have her doctorate, but she’s also excited about teenage things — like attending a prom. On Saturday, she going as her best friend’s date to his senior dance. They’re taking an Escalade outfitted with stars on the ceiling, she said, a feature she requested and that her mother made happen.

Dr. Tillman has been focused on school and her professional pursuits, and she plans to host her institute’s summer camp again. Then, she said, she plans to take a beat and have a “fun teenage summer,” doing things she loves, discovering new hobbies and figuring herself out in the process.

“I want to focus on who I am,” she said.
