The Psychology Undergraduate Office has hard copies of several prize-winning theses from the past five years that you may sign out to see what the best undergraduate work looks like. Above, you can browse the titles of past undergraduate theses to give you an idea of the topics of theses students typically write.
Only hard copies of recent prize-winning theses are currently available.
Please note: Recent theses stored in the Social Relations Library (which recently closed) are unavailable. Inquirers needing a thesis that is not listed in HOLLIS should contact the authors of theses directly to attempt to obtain a copy.

Psychology-Related Dissertations & Theses
While the ideas we’ve presented above are a decent starting point for finding a research topic in psychology, they are fairly generic and non-specific. So, it helps to look at actual dissertations and theses to see how this all comes together in practice.
Below, we’ve included a selection of research projects from various psychology degree programs to help refine your thinking. These are actual dissertations and theses, written as part of Master’s and PhD-level programs, so they can provide some useful insight as to what a research topic looks like in practice.

Looking at these titles, you can probably pick up that the research topics here are far more specific and narrowly-focused , compared to the generic ones presented earlier. This is an important thing to keep in mind as you develop your own research topic. That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

How to Write an Introduction for a Psychology Paper
Kendra Cherry, MS, is a psychosocial rehabilitation specialist, psychology educator, and author of the "Everything Psychology Book."
Emily is a board-certified science editor who has worked with top digital publishing brands like Voices for Biodiversity, Study.com, GoodTherapy, Vox, and Verywell.
- Writing Tips
If you are writing a psychology paper, it is essential to kick things off with a strong introduction. The introduction to a psychology research paper helps your readers understand why the topic is important and what they need to know before they delve deeper.
Your goal in this section is to introduce the topic to the reader, provide an overview of previous research on the topic, and identify your own hypothesis .
At a Glance
Writing a great introduction can be a great foundation for the rest of your psychology paper. To create a strong intro:
- Research your topic
- Outline your paper
- Introduce your topic
- Summarize the previous research
- Present your hypothesis or main argument
Before You Write an Introduction
There are some important steps you need to take before you even begin writing your introduction. To know what to write, you need to collect important background information and create a detailed plan.
Research Your Topic
Search a journal database, PsychInfo or ERIC, to find articles on your subject. Once you have located an article, look at the reference section to locate other studies cited in the article. As you take notes from these articles, be sure to write down where you found the information.
A simple note detailing the author's name, journal, and date of publication can help you keep track of sources and avoid plagiarism.
Create a Detailed Outline
This is often one of the most boring and onerous steps, so students tend to skip outlining and go straight to writing. Creating an outline might seem tedious, but it can be an enormous time-saver down the road and will make the writing process much easier.
Start by looking over the notes you made during the research process and consider how you want to present all of your ideas and research.
Introduce the Topic
Once you are ready to write your introduction, your first task is to provide a brief description of the research question. What is the experiment or study attempting to demonstrate? What phenomena are you studying? Provide a brief history of your topic and explain how it relates to your current research.
As you are introducing your topic, consider what makes it important. Why should it matter to your reader? The goal of your introduction is not only to let your reader know what your paper is about, but also to justify why it is important for them to learn more.
If your paper tackles a controversial subject and is focused on resolving the issue, it is important to summarize both sides of the controversy in a fair and impartial way. Consider how your paper fits in with the relevant research on the topic.
The introduction of a research paper is designed to grab interest. It should present a compelling look at the research that already exists and explain to readers what questions your own paper will address.
Summarize Previous Research
The second task of your introduction is to provide a well-rounded summary of previous research that is relevant to your topic. So, before you begin to write this summary, it is important to research your topic thoroughly.
Finding appropriate sources amid thousands of journal articles can be a daunting task, but there are several steps you can take to simplify your research. If you have completed the initial steps of researching and keeping detailed notes, writing your introduction will be much easier.
It is essential to give the reader a good overview of the historical context of the issue you are writing about, but do not feel like you must provide an exhaustive review of the subject. Focus on hitting the main points, and try to include the most relevant studies.
You might describe previous research findings and then explain how the current study differs or expands upon earlier research.
Provide Your Hypothesis
Once you have summarized the previous research, explain areas where the research is lacking or potentially flawed. What is missing from previous studies on your topic? What research questions have yet to be answered? Your hypothesis should lead to these questions.
At the end of your introduction, offer your hypothesis and describe what you expected to find in your experiment or study.
The introduction should be relatively brief. You want to give your readers an overview of a topic, explain why you are addressing it, and provide your arguments.
Tips for Writing Your Psychology Paper Intro
- Use 3x5 inch note cards to write down notes and sources.
- Look in professional psychology journals for examples of introductions.
- Remember to cite your sources.
- Maintain a working bibliography with all of the sources you might use in your final paper. This will make it much easier to prepare your reference section later on.
- Use a copy of the APA style manual to ensure that your introduction and references are in proper APA format .
What This Means For You
Before you delve into the main body of your paper, you need to give your readers some background and present your main argument in the introduction of you paper. You can do this by first explaining what your topic is about, summarizing past research, and then providing your thesis.

How Positive Emotions Work in Human Psychology
Prof. Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati
Abstract: Positive emotions are essential for a healthy and happy life, as they are not just temporary feelings that we chase. They can be described as "multicomponent response tendencies" that last a short time or as intense and pleasurable mental experiences. Some common positive emotions include joy, gratitude, peace of mind, interest, hope, pride, amusement, inspiration, awe, elevation, altruism, satisfaction, relief, surprise, confidence, admiration, enthusiasm, anxiety, Euphoria, contentment, enjoyment, optimism, happiness, and love. These emotions can be described in two ways: as "multicomponent response tendencies" that only last a short time, or as intense and pleasurable mental experiences. Understanding these emotions is crucial for those working in positive psychology, as they can help us understand their role in our lives and how they make us feel. The point of positive emotions is to be happy, satisfied, and satisfied with life, making them a valuable part of our lives. Positive emotions are essential for happiness and well-being, as they lead to fleeting but meaningful moments that make life worth living. Barbara Fredrickson's "Broaden-and-Build Theory" of positive emotions suggests that these emotions broaden our awareness and build inner resources, such as knowledge, skills, abilities, and relationships. Positive emotions expand a person's short-term thought-action repertoire, allowing them to think and act creatively. Negative emotions, like fear or anxiety, focus on a few options, while positive emotions broaden our horizons, allowing us to think and act creatively. This broadening of resources can have long-lasting effects on mental, emotional, psychological, social, and physical health. Positive emotions can have a significant impact on how we live our lives and work. Positive emotions are beneficial for overall health, as they help lower stress, control reactions to stress, and reduce the likelihood of experiencing illness symptoms. They also promote healthier choices, protect against depressive symptoms, and strengthen the heart. Positive emotions are linked to resilience and memory, boosting resilience and life satisfaction. They help people concentrate and remember things better, making them more productive and effective in various areas of life, including work. Positive emotions have been linked to better relationships, therapy outcomes, academic performance, and personal growth. Overall, positive emotions contribute to better work life, physical and mental health, social relationships, community involvement, and income. Positive emotions at work are linked to increased employee engagement, job satisfaction, and overall mental health. They also contribute to better leadership, task performance, and employee motivation. Positive emotions, such as joy, interest, gratitude, and happiness, make people happier at work and less likely to quit. Transformational leadership and positive emotions also improve task performance and engagement. Positive emotions also lead to better understanding of roles, better relationships, and increased creativity, which contributes to innovation and organizational success. Lastly, positive emotions, such as hope, optimism, and resilience, make people happier, more committed to the company, and more satisfied with their jobs. Highlights • Positive emotions are crucial for a healthy life, characterized by intense mental experiences. • Common positive emotions include joy, gratitude, peace of mind, hope, pride, amusement, inspiration, awe, and happiness. • Barbara Fredrickson's "Broaden-and-Build Theory" suggests positive emotions broaden awareness and build inner resources. • Positive emotions lower stress, control reactions, promote healthier choices, and strengthen the heart. • They boost resilience and memory, life satisfaction, and job satisfaction. • Positive emotions at work increase employee engagement and overall mental health.

This paper considers the role of the awareness necessary to gain greater mastery of one's emotional processes and enhance emotional well-being in a learning environment. It critically examines what people think they need to achieve this, vs. what they actually receive through the exploration of changing perception over time. A mixed method phenomenological analysis approach was chosen to study the perceptions of a cohort of students studying a Post Graduate Certificate in Emotional Education (PGCEE). Focusing on how the students perceived what emotional well-being was (i.e. their view of its characteristics, associated behaviours and the values placed upon it), the study set out to seek underlying needs which if met would lead to a positive change in overall emotional wellbeing. The over-arching query being whether the students were aware of what they needed in order to gain mastery over their emotional processes and change their emotional wellbeing in a positive manner. Fowler (1986) and Zimbardo (1991) suggest, one does not need to be consciously aware, to produce a positive outcome, while Damasio (2012):p4, talks of 'Awakening meant having my temporarily absent mind returned … otherwise known as the conscious human mind … Without (which) you would have no way of knowing that you exist.' Through critical analysis the study sets out to provide evidence-based research to enable prospective students to make a more informed choice in enrolling on this PGCEE. In addition to existing feedback tools, it also seeks to offer PGCEE programme designers further insights in understanding what the students experienced as a tool to enhance the course. The study strongly indicated that the students’ initial rationale to engage in a process which they believed would improve their emotional well-being, was less important than the engagement in the process itself. It also highlights the importance for students to personally apply the theory associated with emotional processes and not just know the theory, or apply it externally. Overall, students communicated that their emotional well-being had improved over time, while subjective well-being fluctuated and was negative on occasion. Perseverance to stick with the process, and with the course being provided in a supportive group setting, offered key ingredients that lead to the gaining of greater mastery of emotional processes. The research findings indicated that a significant lack of emotional resilience or overly rigid construct (belief system) impedes learning, to the point that a student could find it hard to complete the course. It is therefore suggested that finding ways to test for such before starting the course, or additional support throughout the course, could be beneficial. That said, if a rigid construct is protecting the individual’s psychological well-being, then the need to ascertain if such interventions are ethically appropriate would need to be considered. Overall it was concluded that emotional education, as provided by the PGCEE, encourages the development of a profound wisdom, manifested through the individual gaining awareness of the constituent parts that lead to emotional well-being. For example, from a desire to 'respect other people', and seek 'happiness' to what could lead to achieving them, such as developing greater 'perspective', 'honesty' and 'authenticity'. The importance of the link between academic study, experiential leaning and personal reflection were also evident in the development of this positive outcome.
