As in any discipline, it is essential to understand the forms of writing common in your field.

In April 2016, I won a full scholarship from the National Council of Social Services (Singapore) to read Social Work in the University of Nottingham.

I thought I would take the chance to share the examples from my scholarship essay that helped me to get into the interview. I hope students reading this will have a clearer guide on how to write their own scholarship essays.

Whilst the scholarship essays from Singapore might differ to other countries, I provide principles here to guide your writing. Throughout this article, I will also include examples from my own personal scholarship essay application. Through this, I hope you gain better ideas on how to use them for yourself.

Writing a scholarship essay can seem unnerving. For one, they ask many why questions. They also seem to expect you to know what you are going to do with your life in 5 years’ time. You might not even know what you are going to do with your life tomorrow!  

1. Include stories 

A public speaking coach once told me, ‘Facts tell, stories sell.’ Humans are story-telling creature. Without stories, our lives would be less rich. But more importantly, without stories, we make less of an impact on the panel of assessors reading through our applications. 

When you tell your story, try to keep it to one. Unless it’s a full essay, including only one will help you to go in-depth into the story. 

Focus on the things  you  did that might relate to social work. What impact did it make?

Write about what others might have said of your contributions. 

2. Ask someone else to read through your essay. 

Example 1: about yourself.

During Sunday afternoons, I volunteer my time with the intellectually disabled, and see them as no more different from any of us. One of my most impactful moments came when I was teaching one of the trainees how to write in block letters. We are trying out the alphabet “A”. After the umpteenth time, he looks at me, bites his lip, and exclaims, “I don’t know how to write this!”  Although he is bilingual and looks like you and me, such a simple alphabet has spawned so much difficulty. They may be obsessive, compulsive and impulsive, but their flaws are no less than our own, and their flaws do not change the fact that they are still fundamentally human and deserve respect and dignity. In my search for a future career,  I wanted one that would be able to help me to make a positive impact in the lives of others.  (LINK TO SOCIAL WORK)  Whilst social work may often be seen as lowly paid, and the fruits of our labor often taking a much longer time to ripen, I believe that the process is what is to be cherished, rather than the end product itself.

We are all prone to our own biases. That is why sharing your essay with someone else is good. I shared my own essay with a social worker, who led me to see certain stereotypes I may have unknowingly conveyed through my essay. 

Encourage someone to read your essay and tell you the good, and bad about it.

2. Use every experience you have had. 

Some people think that direct social work or social care experience might be more useful. But for many younger students who might be applying for an undergraduate scholarship, you might not have this experience. It’s good to draw a link between your summer jobs and your future ambition of becoming a social worker. 

For example, even though I didn’t have any social care experience, I used my experience in the army to illustrate how we shouldn’t hold stereotypes towards the disadvantaged. Social work was my way of reaching out to them. 

Hopefully, the following social work scholarship essay examples, drawn from my own application, help.

Example 2: Current work experience

One of my fondest memories of National Service came in the cookhouse as I was speaking to one of the more notorious men. Big and bulky, it is not easy to order him around, especially when we know his connections outside. And especially when we have heard about how an imprint of his fist is still on a locker somewhere, landed in frustration after he was charged and sent to the detention barracks. But as he sits alone in the cookhouse, I feel compelled to speak to him, knowing that his past is no reason to isolate him or to treat him differently. As I awkwardly place my plate in front of him, he looks up, eyeing me suspiciously. I break into a smile and try to make small conversation. Unprompted, he shares about his experiences inside jail, and it is clear that he has not had it easy inside.  But as I hear about his plans to begin work as a car salesman before eventually setting up a  zi char  store, whipping up dishes people love, I greatly admire the hope he holds deep within. His face is lit with optimism of a better future, and his scowl has disappeared. Army has indeed exposed me to a myriad of different characters and has taught me that far beyond the shelter of my privileged environment, lie many people who have not had the chance to enjoy life as fortunately as I have.  Social work gives me that chance to touch these lives.  (LINK TO SOCIAL WORK)

4. Be clear about who you are. 

Applying for a scholarship can be a gruelling process. Application essays and interviews will ask you multiple questions about what your motivations are ( why social work?) , what you are interested in, what you are good at, what you can add, and where you want to be. You don’t have to know the answers to all these. But you need to show that you have at least thought about some of these questions. 

If you have not, I would deeply recommend Richard Bolles’  What Color Is Your Parachute.  This is a book that leads you on 7 separate exercises that help you elucidate more about who you. Try it. It is worth the effort.

5. Be linguistically and grammatically accurate. 

Scholarship panels dislike reading grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. This will be the first sign that you might not have spent as much time as you should on an application. There is no second first impression. Your first impression counts. Before you submit that application, take the time to run through the spell check multiple times. To be safe, I would recommend 3 times!

6. Print it and read it out loud to yourself. 

It is powerful to read what you have read, out loud to yourself. For one, the spelling and grammar mistakes will jump out at you. It also allows you to see if you are cogent.

Do your arguments flow well?

Do your points make sense? 

Recommended by Cal Newport’s book How To Be A Straight-A student, I have found it invaluable in editing better.

I hope that these social work scholarship essay examples help make writing easier. Don’t forget, you are not defined by the outcome of this application. It is really important for the marker to understand the student’s rationale in responding to the essay title and to be guided as to how the student intends to address the question. Students often begin an essay with long definitions or historical information without relating these to the essay title. Equally important is a conclusion which relates back to the aims set out in the introduction and demonstrates a progression in thinking achieved through the process of writing the essay. Identify references clearly The marker must be able to identify exactly the source of a reference. Students often include a website without stating the exact webpage. A marker cannot locate a reference on complex websites such as the Department for Education without the detail of the exact page being provided. Similarly, quotations must include the page number so that the marker can find the exact source material. This is particularly important because of the extent of plagiarism and the need for academics to check exactly where the student has gained the information from. Also, students probably do not realise that as lecturers we often like to check a reference for our own interest to develop our knowledge of the subject. Use professional, not colloquial, language Students often use language which is colloquial and as they would speak rather than more professional language – for example, “I got a case of…” rather than “I was allocated the case of…”. Or “I did an interview” rather than “I conducted an interview”. It is important to recognise the distinction between how to communicate verbally and how to write a coherent and professional essay. Provide evidence that you understand social work principles Students often list principles of social work practice without evidencing their understanding of them. For example, they state that social workers must be anti-oppressive and non-judgemental but often give no evidence that they understand the concept or know how to apply it in practice. Lists of principles and standards should be avoided. The marker needs to know that the student has made sense of these concepts and can demonstrate their application. I Don’t Write Like Alice Munro, but I Want to Live Like Her

It is common to say “I was heartbroken to hear” that so-and-so died, but I really do feel heartbroken having learned about Alice Munro, who died on Monday.

As a writer, she modeled, in her life and art, that one must work with emotional sincerity and precision and concentration and depth — not on every kind of writing but on only one kind, the kind closest to one’s heart.

She has long been a North Star for many writers and was someone I have always felt guided by. We are very different writers, but I have kept her in mind, daily and for decades, as an example to follow (but failed to follow to the extent that she demonstrated it): that a fiction writer isn’t someone for hire.

A fiction writer isn’t someone who can write anything — movies, articles, obits! She isn’t a person in service to the magazines, to the newspapers, to the publishers or even to her audience. She doesn’t have to speak on the political issues of the day or on matters of importance to the culture right now but ought first and most to attend seriously to her task, which is her only task, writing the particular thing she was most suited to write.

Ms. Munro only ever wrote short stories — not novels, though she must have been pressured to. She died in a small town not too far from where she was born, choosing to remain close to the sort of people she grew up with, whom she remained ever curious about. Depth is wherever one stands, she showed us, convincingly.

Fiction writers are people, supposedly, who have things to say; they must, because they are so good with words. So people are always asking them: Can you say something about this or about this? But the art of hearing the voice of a fictional person or sensing a fictional world or working for years on some unfathomable creation is, in fact, the opposite of saying something with the opinionated and knowledgeable part of one’s mind. It is rather the humble craft of putting your opinions and ego aside and letting something be said through you.

Ms. Munro held to this division and never let the vanity that can come with being good with words persuade her to put her words just everywhere, in every possible way. Here was the best example in the world — in Canada, my own land — of someone who seemed to abide by classical artistic values in her choices as a person and in her choices on the page. I felt quietly reassured knowing that a hundred kilometers down the road was Alice Munro.

She was also an example of how a writer should be in public: modest, unpretentious, funny, generous and kind. I learned the lesson of generosity from her early. When I was 20 and was just starting to publish short stories, I sent her a fan letter. I don’t remember what my letter said. After a few months, I received a handwritten thank-you note from her in the mail. The fact that she replied at all and did so with such care taught me a lot about grace and consideration and has remained as a warmth within me since that day.

She will always remain for me, and for many others, a model of that grave yet joyous dedication to art — a dedication that inevitably informs the most important choices the artist makes about how to support that life. Probably Ms. Munro would laugh at this; no one knows the compromises another makes, especially when that person is as private as she was and transforms her trials into fiction. Yet whatever the truth of her daily existence, she still shines as a symbol of artistic purity and care.

I am grateful for all she gave to the world and for all the sacrifices she must have made to give it. I’m sorry to be here defying her example, but she was just too loved, and these words just came. Thank you, Alice Munro.

Survey Results: How Much Should I Pay a Freelance Writer? [Infographic]

At ClearVoice, we probably get asked this question more than any other: “How much should I pay for a freelance writer?” As creating content for marketing becomes more popular, everyone wants to know what the going freelance pay rates are for well-written blog posts, email newsletters, social media content, and ebooks.

On the flip side, we know freelancers are curious about how they stack up to others in terms of pay. Let’s face it, it’s a seldom-spoken topic. If you do a quick search on pay for freelance writers, you’ll see that many other publications begin to answer this question, but most fail to actually list any rates. That’s because the answer depends on many factors, but it’d still be nice to see some actual numbers.

How much should you pay a freelance writer for your marketing content?

This FAQ doesn’t have a simple answer. Most intermediate to advanced freelance writers charge between $0.10 and $1 per word, depending on the amount of work they will have to put into the project. But, the way they bill that average range will vary. Some freelance writers bill at a flat rate, per hour, or per monthly retainer for frequent work (in this case, a volume-based discount should apply), rather than per word. Typically, freelance writers who use one of those last three billing methods will include services beyond just the content.

In addition, rates change per industry, company, writer, location, and project ( and many other variables ), which is probably why this question often goes unanswered on the Interwebs. But, that’s not helpful for anyone.

Freelance writing rates explained

So we decided the best way to give you a useful answer on freelance writing rates was to ask freelance writers themselves what they charge:

We addressed a big question in content marketing: How much should you pay freelance writers? Or, if you are a freelance writer, how much should you charge? It’s kind of hard to know unless someone tells you, right?

The best way to get an answer to “how much to pay a freelance writer” was to take it to the streets. We polled 500+ freelance writers from around the country to see what they charge, how they charge, what type of content they produce, the corresponding level of experience, and even gender to see if a gap exists like in so many other industries.

Questions we asked in our survey on freelance writing rates:

1. how many years of experience do you have as a professional freelance writer.

  • Beginner — 0–3 years’ experience
  • Intermediate — 3–7 years’ experience
  • Professional — 7–15 years’ experience
  • Expert — 15+ years’ experience

2. How do you charge?

  • Retainer/ project fee
  • A mix — depends on the client

3. What do you charge per hour? (Approximate if N/A)

4. what do you charge per word (approximate if n/a).

  • $0.11–$0.25
  • $0.26–$0.50
  • $0.51–$0.75
  • $0.76–$1.00
  • $1.00 and above

5. What tasks do you complete for clients?

  • Blog posts/articles
  • Email newsletters
  • Social media content
  • Print collateral
  • Ebooks/white papers
  • Research papers
  • Other [Specify]

6. What is your gender?

  • Prefer not to answer

2018 How Much Should Freelancers Charge For Work?

Key findings around freelance writer pay, experience, and gender

After months of collecting data from freelancers near and far, we were able to see some pretty cool trends on freelancer pay rates. Some were expected and obvious. Others were a bit surprising.

There were several common themes:

1.  You get what you pay for: Rates and level of experience are correlated.

When asked the question, “What do you charge per hour?” rates were cut pretty evenly, aside from the $1 to $20 range.

Here is the breakdown per hour and per word:

  • $21–$40: 19%
  • $41–$60: 18%
  • $61–$80: 14%
  • $81–$100: 19%
  • $0.01 –$0.10: 14%
  • $0.11–$0.25: 18%
  • $0.26–$0.50: 18%
  • $0.51–$0.75: 13%
  • $0.76–$1.00: 25%
  • 12% did not answer because they did not charge per word.

As we suspected, rates and level of experience are connected. Of the writers who charged the lowest rate, 25% were beginner freelancers, while only 1.5% of expert-level writers charged within that range. In fact, of the writers who charged the highest rate – $100+ per hour – most were experts (41%).

The findings were the same for per-word rates. Of the freelancers who charged between $0.01 and $0.10 per word, 32% were beginner writers, while only 0.8% were experts. And of the writers who charged more than a dollar per word, 54% were experts, while only 5% were beginners.

We previously reported on the correlation between pay rates and quality in our pay rate study for the travel industry and subsequent study for the  tech industry . It was no surprise to find that writers with more experience, who charged more, were overwhelmingly better than more affordable, less experienced writers.

2. We found a gender pay gap in our sample that was the opposite of most industries.

Interestingly enough, we didn’t find the traditional gender pay gap in freelance writing, at least in our survey pool. Women, on average, charged more than men except in one category, which was at the intermediate level. When we scale-adjusted the pay ranges to the percentages within each group, it came out to…

Average of all pay levels:

  • Women charged an average of 11.7% more per word.
  • Women charged an average of 8.3% more per hour.

At the beginner level:

  • Women charged an average 25.4% more per word and 37.8% more per hour than men.

At the intermediate level:

  • Men charged an average of 5.4% more per word and 6.3% more per hour than women. *It was the only level where men charged more than women.*

At the professional level:

  • Women charged an average 20.5% more per word and 11.1% more per hour than men.

At the expert level:

  • Women charged an average 11.3% more per word and 5.7% more per hour than men.

Note: Only eight respondents in the survey selected “Prefer not to answer” on the gender question. In future studies, we will add a “non-binary” selection.

3. Most freelance writers are flexible in how they charge.

When asked the question “How do you charge?” freelancers overwhelmingly responded that “it’s a mix – it depends on the client.” In fact, nearly 60% of respondents vary their rates based on different clients, while 12% charge per hour, another 12% by word, and nearly 16% charge by retainer (or per project). This is good news for brands, as budgets and payment terms vary from business to business.

One data point that stuck out was that men were about twice as likely to charge per word than women.

4. No surprise, but articles and blogs are the most common type of content produced.

Overwhelmingly, blogs and articles are the most common type of content produced by freelance writers. In fact, 90% of respondents produce articles and blogs, a rate that was consistent across all experience levels. Here is a breakdown of all the content types in our survey:

  • 90% produce blog posts and articles
  • 52% produce email newsletters
  • 56% produce social media content
  • 30% produce “other” types of content
  • 26% produce print collateral
  • 25% produce ebooks and white papers
  • 14% produce research papers
  • 13% produce books
  • 10% produce website copy

For the most part, men and women produced content types at about the same rate, with one exception: 41% of men reported producing ebooks and white papers while only 25% of women reported the same — the biggest gap for any content type.

5. Counter to popular opinion, older and more experienced freelancers were far more likely to do social media content.

While 80% of experts (those freelance writers with 15+ years of experience) reported doing social media content for clients, substantially fewer beginners, only 47%, reported the same. We found this point to be most surprising, as it counters the notion that social media is dominated by those who are younger. Perhaps putting your brand’s reputation in the hands of a freelancer requires the assurance they are more experienced?

Although charging per word might not be the ultimate method of calculating pay with your freelancers, knowing the approximate word count for the content types you need can help you estimate initial cost figures to work from.

What type of content do you want to produce?

  • Quality posts should be 800–2,200 words, depending on strategy
  • Typically 5–150 words per post.
  • Usually billed monthly or per project for bulk work.
  • Intermediate to expert freelancers should include some strategy and research.
  • Typically 100–800 words.
  • Usually billed at a flat rate per email.
  • Rate could be higher if research, media, distribution, or cross-publishing is required.
  • Design is not included in the content rate.
  • Typical ebooks range from 1,500–5,000+ words, while case studies often range from 300–900 words (usually translating into 1–3 pages for print collateral).
  • Ebook writers are often more experienced freelancers  (and quite possibly subject matter experts).
  • Should always include research, sources, and media.

Parting Words

Sending a special thanks to the hundreds of freelance writers out there who took time out of their day to participate in this study. After viewing the study, we hope freelancers have a better pulse on what others charge. And same goes for brands! Now you should have a better idea of reasonable rates based on levels of experience.

The United States Postwar Period Essay

The United States of America formed the CIA and the Department of Defense to enhance the security and safety of its people. The CIA was an essential unit that was tasked with seeking information that was of national importance. The department of defense strategizes covert action under the president’s commands to any preempt threats. The United States of America was focused on its national security due to the instability and tension created by other nations, such as the Soviet Union, that seemed not ready to cease gunfire. The DOD and the CIA have greatly impacted American society by ensuring continued safety and stability.

The vulnerability of Jim Crow was due to the cold war. The government was pressured to uphold the American aspects of equality as it proclaimed itself. Jim Crow was also a disadvantage to the US administration as the Soviet Union saw it as an opportunity to criticize it. The nonviolent tactic was effective, and its primary advantage was the minimized number of deaths as black people did not fight back. The demerits of this approach were that it was slow and required high self-discipline to avoid fighting when provoked, hurt or arrested. The nonviolence resistance has two main limits; no person was to harm any organism, and any form of war and political chaos needed to be avoided.

1968 was the year of the student as it marked the highest enrollment into college. The students took the frontline in fighting for changes as they gained more ideas and insights on human rights, equality, and leadership. The occupation at Columbia University embodied the sentiment of student radicalism as most students formed movements demanding reforms in various sectors, such as the halt of the Columbia gym construction. The male students were mostly in charge of organizing and executing the protest plans in these happenings. These events catalyzed the Women’s Liberation movement as they failed to demonstrate the sexism concept in the university.

As the Vietnam War commenced, the public supported its course. At the time, the president had promised them victory as they fought with South Vietnam. However, with time, people started to change their stand due to the ” Tet offensive.” This was an assault on the Sothern cities by North Vietnam, resulting in a counterattack by the American soldiers. The events of the war were shown to the Americans, revealing the war’s brutality. If I had been in college in 1960, I could have acted in the same manner of supporting the war and after getting exposed to the actual happenings, I could change my mind.

Nixon viewed democracy as a warfare process rather than a helpful aspect. He also believed that anyone who was against his thoughts was opposing America. The break-in at the Watergate in June 1972 was a chaotic event aimed at reelecting Nixon. The happenings were caused by the fact that it had the head office of the Democratic committee. This move aimed to acquire the necessary information to enable Nixon’s win. In my thought, what Nixon did to ensure he remained in power was a violation of the law and should be charged with criminal charges. The lesson of this event is that every person, including the president, should observe the laws, and no one should abuse power.

A review of the long sweep of US history tells of the great strides the nation has taken since the settlements in Jamestown. Over the years, the United States has made progressive improvements in all aspects of social, economic, and political life. The life of Americans has been made better as time moves. I can tell with certainty if they are ahead or behind us on the idea of better days. If the country continues to improve itself, the Americans will have brighter days. However, if the US ends up with poor leadership with people who prioritize their interests first, then the good days could be behind us.
