Qualities such as intelligence, adaptability, extroversion, innate self-awareness, and social competence often emerge as the hallmarks of impactful leaders. There's a consensus that these traits mold an individual into an effective leader. Interestingly, some theories suggest that extraordinary situations can thrust an ordinary individual into the spotlight, bestowing upon them the mantle of leadership. It's also believed that leadership isn't a static trait but an evolving journey. It underscores the belief that with dedication and the right resources, anyone can hone their leadership abilities.

True leadership goes beyond merely advocating for a cause. It involves taking responsibility, igniting motivation in others, and differentiating oneself from just being a 'boss'. A leader's essence lies in their ability to inspire and propel people towards grand visions, whereas a manager typically focuses on oversight and operational aspects.

Qualities of a good leader, introduction.

Confidence is the most important attribute first of all. One of the most important qualities in a leader is confidence in one's own abilities. A lack of self-assurance is fatal to a person's leadership potential. If you want others to follow you, you need to exude self-assurance. It's imperative for a leader to have faith in his own judgment and actions. How can people want to follow him if he doesn't even know what he's doing?

Every effective leader knows that they need to be an inspiration to their followers. A leader needs to set an example for his team. In addition, he ought to inspire them whenever feasible. A leader must also maintain optimism in trying times.

What qualities a good leader must have?

Leadership is the ability to influence and guide individuals or groups toward a common goal. A leader must possess several qualities to be effective, including:

Communication skills: A leader must be able to communicate their vision and goals clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. This requires excellent listening skills, empathy, and the ability to adapt to different communication styles.

Emotional intelligence: A leader must be able to understand and manage their own emotions, as well as those of their team members. This includes being able to understand and respond to the emotions of others, and handling conflicts in a constructive manner.

Visionary: A leader must have a clear and inspiring vision of the future, and be able to articulate this vision in a way that motivates others to work towards it.

Strategic thinking: A leader must be able to think critically and creatively to identify and solve problems, make decisions, and develop plans and strategies to achieve their goals.

Flexibility: A leader must be able to adapt to changing circumstances and be open to new ideas and perspectives. This requires the ability to embrace change, be innovative, and continuously learn and grow.

Integrity: A leader must have strong ethics and values, and be willing to make difficult decisions that are consistent with their beliefs. This requires honesty, transparency, and accountability.

Decisiveness: A leader must be able to make tough decisions quickly, without undue hesitation or procrastination. This requires courage and the ability to take calculated risks.

Empowerment: A leader must be able to delegate responsibilities, give team members the resources they need to succeed, and foster a sense of ownership and accountability among their team.

Conclusion

These qualities are essential for effective leadership, and when combined with hard work, determination, and a commitment to excellence, can help leaders to achieve great things.

How one can be a Great Leader?

Leadership is the act of performing the duties of a leader. In the business world, for instance, it is essential to have someone in charge of a team to ensure everything runs well. Effective leadership is essential for any group that wants to maximize its prospects of success.

Leadership Comes from Experience

As we've shown, leadership can be innate in some cases but is more often learned through practice and exposure. Sometimes the best traits of a leader must be learned over a lengthy period of time, so that one can become a notable one, proving that leadership is not always about a person's innate qualities. Leaders should continuously be on the lookout for opportunities to grow their leadership skills.

Nobody can disagree that experience is a key component of leadership. Numerous examples exist to back up this claim, such as:

Instance 1:

Our school's head boy or girl has traditionally been an older student who has been around for a while and thus has a better grasp of the ins and outs of school politics.

Instance 2:

When there is a vacancy for a team leader, it is common practice for the employee who has consistently put in the most effort and attention to the office job to receive a higher number of votes than their coworkers.

“The best teacher for a leader is evaluated experience.” - John C. Maxwell

How one can be a Great Leader/Skills to be a Great Leader?

Effective leadership is a skill that develops through time. Developing into a leader with all the qualities that are needed takes a lot of hard work and potential. Being a prominent leader calls for a wide variety of traits. Some of these characteristics are addressed in further detail below:

One should be a Good Communicator

To be an effective leader, one must be able to convey his thoughts clearly to his/her/its subordinates.

Should have Confidence

The individual should have faith in what he says and does.

Give Credit to other Team Members too

A leader not only needs to impose his viewpoints and opinions instead he must also hear to the suggestions of other members of the team and offer them credit if their concept is appropriate.

Good Bond with the Team

A leader's ability to command respect from his team members depends on his ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with them.

Leads with Responsibility

A leader needs to be completely committed to his position. It's important that he takes on responsibility so that he can effectively deal with the various challenges he will inevitably face.

Any group or organization needs a leader above all else. Leadership development takes time and effort. One needs to have lived through a lot to be an effective leader. It's not enough to simply have years of experience in the field; one must also have the traits that make one an effective leader. You can't be a great leader unless you possess certain traits.

What makes a Good Leader?

Trying one's hand as a leader appears easy when viewed through this lens. Is that so tough? Of course not; leading is difficult, and not everyone aspires to be a leader. The vast majority of us have settled into well-established careers where we report to superiors and make a living. Still, not everyone is content to go along with the crowd. They become leaders in whatever field they pursue. A leader is an example to followers and will prioritize the needs of those around them.

Some Unique Qualities of a Leader

Many individuals resort to their leaders to vent their frustrations, therefore it's important for them to be good listeners.

A leader ought to be completely forthright; they can't play favorites or give anyone preferential treatment. One of the most essential qualities of a strong leader is the ability to make decisions with integrity.

They need to be aware of the bigger picture and understand what makes an individual stand out or become a leader. It's their expertise in addition to other distinguishing traits. Their awareness of current events and the results of recent studies is essential. In many ways, this is helpful, and it's the leader's responsibility to stay current.

Since some might not understand them, they should utilize straightforward, easily comprehended language. Leaders need to be able to communicate effectively at all times. In reality, what sets them apart is their exceptional communication skills. Adolf Hitler was such a gifted orator that his followers believed every word he said.

No matter how you're feeling or what's going on in the world, if you listen to a leader, they may make you feel energized. Since leaders are in charge of inspiring confidence in their followers, they can't afford to be wary or unsure of themselves. People tend to blindly follow their leaders.

Whether you're a leader or a doctor, you should devote yourself completely to your chosen field. Everything we do is for the benefit of others; engineers, for example, spend much of their time designing and constructing buildings for other people. So, take pride in what you do, and if you possess the aforementioned traits, you are also a leader who doesn't have to rely on others to succeed. No matter what you do, aspiring to leadership positions will always benefit others.

Leadership is a necessary skill for anyone aspiring to be an effective manager. The terms management and leadership are synonymous with one another. In this manner, we are able to draw the conclusion that a manager who demonstrates the traits of a successful leader is, in fact, a manager who is effective.

Leadership in School

Leadership is essential in nearly every group, as we've seen above. That group includes one's educational institution. Every school needs an outstanding figure to serve as its head of school. Class monitor, assembly captain, cultural leader, etc. are all examples of leadership roles that can be taken on at school, but this raises the question of what makes a person a successful school leader.

Any student hoping to be chosen as a student body leader will need to demonstrate a wide range of competencies. He or she needs to be a consistent student who pays attention in class and does well in extracurricular activities. For the simple reason that no intelligent and hardworking kid would ever be considered for leadership. Student leaders are most often selected from among those who participate fully in all activities.

Leadership in Organization

Leadership in an organization, also known as organizational leadership, is the process of establishing long-term objectives that further the company's mission and help it reach its ultimate destination. This is a classic illustration of how Bill Gates often works with his team: they agree on a strategy, and Gates implements it. To the same extent, it is the responsibility of the leader in each given organization to determine what it is that the group is trying to accomplish.

Leadership in Politics

Leadership in politics, also known as political leadership, is the process of becoming actively involved in a political party in the role of a party leader. Knowledge of political processes, their outcomes, and the political agenda is central to the idea of political leadership.

An effective leader can be developed in anyone who has the determination and drives to do so. Both the strengths and the areas for improvement should be nurtured. Whether in the classroom, the workplace, or the political arena, leadership is always necessary. Therefore, one can exercise leadership anywhere they like inside their own organization.

What are the types of Leadership?

The ability to lead is a rare trait that not everyone possesses. The ability to do so is a gift, so count your blessings if you possess it. It's recommended that you hone it even more so that you can propel your career forward and serve as an example to people around you. However, it is crucial to grasp the various leadership styles before you go ahead and polish your skills.

It's no secret that this method of leading has its detractors.

Cross-Cultural Leadership

The leadership of this type is necessary when interacting with people from various cultural backgrounds. Because of the wide variety of cultures represented in the workforce across the United States, many managers and executives hold cross-cultural positions.

Laissez-Faire Leadership

The members of the team are given responsibility in this style of management. They are free to choose how they spend their time at work, with minimal oversight from the boss. It's not a good way to lead, according to experts.

Transactional Leadership

An interactive approach is integral to this kind of leadership. When team members successfully implement their leader's ideas and choices, they are rewarded with immediate, material benefits.

  • How to Structure a Leadership Essay (Samples to Consider)

Leadership is a complex concept, but it’s essential for boosting your career. That’s why a leadership essay focuses on applying the theoretical models and concepts of successful management to real-life situations.

If you don’t know where to start writing such a paper, please read on for professional tips!

What Is Leadership Essay?

A leadership essay is a paper that analyzes leadership concepts and their application to real-life situations that may involve everyday business management, crisis situations, and other scenarios.

Every essay on leadership is about defining a concept. Then, it’s either comparing it to similar management tools or proving that it’s useful (or not).

While some students enjoy writing such papers, other learners hate them. The below samples will come in handy, no matter which group is yours.

What Does Leadership Mean to You? (Essay Sample)

It is one of the most popular topics for a leadership essay. If you need to write a paper like that, ask yourself:

  • Who is a good leader?
  • What style do they use?
  • What are the situations when they might switch styles?

You may take a more personal approach to such an essay if your professor allows you to. In the example below, you will see the academic approach to this topic. It analyzes three leadership styles to discover which one corresponds to the meaning of leadership if one thinks of it as guidance and support.

Why I Want to Participate in a Leadership Program (Essay Sample)

It’s another example of a popular topic. Such papers often have a meaning beyond the classroom since they may decide whether you plan to participate in a specific program. It’s critical to make them as effective and compelling as possible.

A personalized approach is the best when it comes to essays like this. In the example below, you will see the paper that relies on individual beliefs and a personal life story to explain why it’s so important for the specific student to participate in the chosen program.

How to Write a Leadership Essay

Like every other essay, this paper has an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion summarizing your thoughts. (1) The most important part of the introduction is the final sentence,  aka  a thesis statement. That’s where you state your claim to prove or develop in your leadership essay.

Each body paragraph should correspond to the purpose of your essay. To ensure you don’t stray from the aim you’ve established in the thesis statement, write the topic sentences for all your paragraphs in the outline . In simple words, write the first sentence of every paragraph to define its development in advance and see if you cover everything you need.

And now, to the conclusion:

Its most essential element is thesis restatement or the first sentence of that paragraph. It’s not just paraphrasing your thesis; it’s also considering the new information you’ve discovered while writing the essay.

leadership-essay-structure

Structure :

  • Introduction (End it with a thesis statement.)
  • Body paragraphs (Each one starts with a topic sentence.)
  • Conclusion (Start it with a thesis restatement.)

Understand the purpose of a leadership essay

When starting to write, think about why you’re creating this paper. Before you sit down and type the words, think about the ideas you want to convey and their meaning in your life:

Can this essay teach you to take responsibility? Or maybe will it help you understand how to be a leader in crisis situations? When you’ve answered the “why” question, begin outlining.

Build a strong thesis

Always start with your thesis statement. It will help incorporate your answer to that notorious “why” question into your essay. Once done, you can plan out the rest of the paper and start working on the body paragraphs as soon as you finish the introduction.

There’s another important tip —don’t rush into writing the conclusion before you finish everything else!

It might seem like a good idea to create a thesis statement and thesis restatement right off the bat. However, you’ll find yourself with more refreshing ideas after completing all the research and thinking necessary for the introduction and each body paragraph.

Decide on a structure; format accordingly

Even if your essay about leadership seems not so formal, and you can use personal pronouns, you still need a clear structure.

The best way to write any academic paper is to keep your introduction and conclusion as short as possible. (But no shorter than three sentences and four lines of text).

Another important tip is to try making all your body paragraphs equal in length. That way, you’ll give the same attention to all the vital points of your essay.

Ready to Write Your Essay on Leadership Now?

Hopefully, this article has helped you understand the most critical elements of a leadership essay.

Remember the structure, grammar, and appropriate academic style to create a top-level paper. Please don’t forget to answer the “why” question and remember  why  you’re writing. Then you’ll impress everyone with your results!

Short Essay on Leadership in 400 Words

Leadership is the essence of any movement that brings complete success for any team. A great leader is like the wind for a sail that steers the vessel towards the correct path. A leader means a person who is in charge of everything. So the term leadership is the way by which a leader guides the team. In different fields of life, be it in school, a business company, or the nation, a leader is present everywhere.

He must have virtues that will make him unique and easily supportable. A leader must have the faith of his fellow beings so that he can be the best choice. This faith and support will enable him to achieve success.

The qualities of efficient leadership are quite prominent. A leader must be honest about his work and organization. He must never hide any problem that might hamper the balance of his team. Also, he should not indulge in unfair means that can destroy his position and reputation among people. A leader must show confidence, integrity, and strength. He should bear an affirmative attitude so that others are inspired by him to work harder. If a leader gets negatively vibed, then no one will feel the urge to carry on their mission.

Leadership is not an easy task. He has to go through many trials and tribunals and then only can prove himself the ideal guide for all. Oftentimes, even the greatest leader can experience mental imbalances due to the extreme pressure he experiences daily on his way of leadership. It is then the responsibility of his teammates to support him and cheer him up with positive energy. Leadership is not the sole responsibility of one man or woman but a combined effort of the team that will eventually fetch the desired success.

Leadership is important for the overall development of personality. A person morally and physically weak cannot be an ideal leader. This ability to lead a team regulates, coordinates, and constructs the group according to some strong principles and ethics, that affects the performance of the group. Wonderful teamwork is the effort of the overall company under the guidance of an able leader.

He is the pivot of everything. Our country is rich in eminent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji, Surya Sen, Mother Teresa, Sarojini Naidu, Sourav Ganguly, and others who have shown the way to ht e future generations. In them lies the ideal representation of leadership.

As a college student, you must write essays on a regular basis since the latter is one of the most common types of home assignments. All this means is that in order to get good grades and be successful with writing the papers, you need to have a sound understanding of the structure. Additionally, what you should never neglect is the variety of essay types. Indeed, your essay will significantly differ from one type to another: description essay will most likely have a structure that is slightly different from an argumentative one.

Leadership Essays

What you may have already encountered in your academic life is the work on a leadership essay. Although it sounds pretty complicated and vague, it is mostly possible to master an essay on leadership. Below is a guide for you to get an insight into this particular essay type.

What is a good leadership essay?

A good leadership essay is the one in which the essay writer has fully covered the topic of leadership and understood its core ideas. More specifically, to end up with a flawless leadership essay, you will need to indicate what makes a person a good leader. For achieving the latter, you will most likely need to conduct research and trace how a particular person reaches his or her goals. In other words, the task is to discover which actions the person undertakes, what their followers say about him or her, and how the person organizes the work. So, a leadership essay implies providing real-life success examples and further revealing them.

Above all, a good leadership essay is the one that follows a precise, clear, comprehensive structure. Structuring your essay about leadership in the most coherent way leads to a win-win situation: you have fewer troubles and barriers to writing a brilliant essay, and your teacher is able to comprehend the essay easily. This guide is what you will need to refer to to get an insight into how the flawless structure for a leadership essay looks like and how it will let you take a benefit.

How to write a Leadership essay?

To write a leadership essay that stands out, you first need to brainstorm all the ideas that you have and come up with a topic for your essay. If you are struggling with this step, you may think of some of the most influential people, read about them, and find out what makes them unique. Or, you can pick any topic which is mentioned at the end of this article. After you have chosen an issue, it is time to structure your essay appropriately.

how to write a leadership essay example

As you already know, an essay constitutes three essential sections: introduction, main body, and conclusion. Below is the more detailed description of each of the parts.

Introduction

Of course, your leadership essay introduction will always vary depending on the topic of the essay. However, you can always begin by stating your vision of leadership regardless of the topic. Additionally, to motivate the reader and instantly catch his or her attention, you may use a quote of a famous leader, or simply a quote which you find relevant to the topic. Be aware that you should avoid outlining the essence and the role of the leadership in your introduction; leave it for the body paragraphs.

What you may also do in your leadership essay is ask a question, which will most likely intrigue the leader. Or it will at least give your reader an overview of what you will dwell on  in your essay.

Body Paragraphs

You will need to divide the main body into 3-5 paragraphs to make the structure more comprehensive. What you have to do at this point  is  give your reader a sound understanding of your ideas. Therefore, try to fit each idea in a single body paragraph so that you do not confuse your reader. Do not hesitate to indicate your examples to strengthen your arguments. For instance, you may explain a fact that makes a particular person you are writing about a real leader.

Also, always stick to your thesis statement and don’t forget that the body paragraphs should reveal the parts of your thesis statement.

As you may already know, you need to restate your opinion and briefly summarize all the points from the main body in conclusion. For instance, if you wrote your essay on qualities of an effective leader, state the most fundamental qualities and indicate why they matter the most. Besides, try not to copy what you have already written in the body – it is better to restate your opinion using different words. And, of course, beware adding any new and extra information; indicate only those points that you have already outlined in the text. Finally, keep in mind that it is always favorable to keep your concluding remarks short.

Leadership Essay Examples

Writing a leadership essay requires some research and time. In case you feel the necessity to go through an essay example, below is a leadership essay sample you can refer to.

Is leadership an inborn or an acquired feature?

Is everyone capable of becoming a leader, or is this ability innate? A lot of researchers have been struggling to answer this question. One assumption about leadership implies that the leader is the person who possesses particular characteristics. Another assumption claims that leaders are capable of acquiring specific features over their life span. As the evidence shows, leaders own many features that distinguish them among others and make more and more people become their followers. These might be cognitive abilities, psychological traits, professional qualities, and a lot more, and all of them will be either acquired or innate. Based on the importance of leadership qualities, such as commitment, stress resistance, and the ability to make quality decisions, it is reasonable to claim that leaders are made, not born.

One can deem commitment as one of the top fundamental qualities of the leader. In essence, such a feature indicates that a person is passionate about the common goal, strives to be a team player, and makes every effort to reach a shared goal. As the history shows, none of the successful companies was uncoordinated by an influential, committed leader: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft – all of these companies are examples of dominant teams led by a dedicated leader. A committed leader also inspires his or her team to achieve common goals and put more effort into the shared activity. Besides, commitment is unlikely to be an innate feature; it instead comes with experience. This is so, since commitment implies dedicating oneself to the shared task, and one can reach it only via learning and continuous self-improvement.

Stress resistance is another incredibly important feature that every good leader should possess. This is because only a stress-resistant leader has sufficient capabilities to overcome any complexity and not let the anxiety and stress prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. What he or she should do implies brainstorming, discussing various opinions in the group, making forecasts, analyzing all the pros and cons. However, the leader is the one to make a final decision. Thereby, he is in charge of researching the market, discovering all the hidden truths, and analyzing the organization’s potential and capabilities to result in the most effective decision. As it flows logically from the latter, an ability to make sound quality decisions is purely a professional quality. This leads to the conclusion that one has to work hard to become a genuine leader and master the skill of making effective decisions.

Overall, the leader may possess a multitude of different skills and master them perfectly. However, what has so far become transparent is that any leader, regardless of which team he leads, must possess three essential qualities. These qualities are commitment to the common goal, ability to handle and resist stress, and, finally, an ability to make effective decisions. All of the three qualities are most likely to be acquired over a lifetime. The statement below leads to the conclusion that even though some qualities can be innate, most are not the ones that leaders are born with. Hence, this answers an essential question: leadership feature is acquired, and not necessarily inborn.

While writing a leadership essay, you may struggle with the subject, structure, titles, and other components. Don’t worry – these tips will help you to write the best leadership paper!

Tip 1. Choose your subject area first. If your professor did not provide specific topics, you would need to select one on your own. In order to do this, you may focus on an area of leadership that sounds interesting to you.

For example, if you consider working in the hospitality sector in the future, write about leadership in hotels or restaurants. Alternatively, you can browse leadership essay topics online and see if that gives you any clarity.

Tip 2. Narrow down the topic. To ensure that your essay earns high marks, you should avoid choosing an area of leadership that is too broad.

A college level paper should offer enough details and depth to receive an excellent grade. For instance, instead of overviewing a bunch of leadership styles, focus on how certain styles impede or facilitate teamwork. This will give you enough to talk about while limiting the scope of your essay.

Tip 3. Don’t confuse leadership with management! This is a common mistake that students make while writing leadership essays. Although the two concepts overlap, leadership is more about beliefs and vision, whereas managerial work is focused on specific tools and techniques.

Thus, a leader may or may not be a manager. To get more familiar with the subject of leadership, research various leadership styles, such as transformational, autocratic, and servant leadership.

Tip 4. Pay attention to the structure. In a great essay, ideas are always well-organized and follow one another in a logical sequence. First, write an introduction where you present your topic and thesis.

Then, write the main body, where you explain the key concepts and the relationships between them by reviewing relevant research evidence.

Lastly, write a conclusion summarizing your key points. A good leadership essay conclusion should also show how the information can be applied in practice.

Tip 5. Seek to answer any questions that readers might have. For your essay to show excellent depth, you need to address the points that might be interesting to readers in connection with your subject area.

For example, if you are reviewing a particular leadership style, you might want to discuss in which settings it would be useful and what are some of its limitations.

To make this part easier, you could search for leadership essay questions online to clarify what kind of answers readers expect you to cover.

Tip 6. Explain the importance and relevance of your paper. Because leadership is focused on effective strategies that can be applied in real life, you need to provide examples of how your essay may be used to support future practice and research.

Can leaders use the information you provided to improve their relationships with other employees? Can the proposed strategies influence performance?

Think about the potential uses of your research, as well as any gaps that are yet to be studied. Highlighting areas for future research will show your tutor that you are genuinely interested in the subject while also helping you plan for future essays.

We hope that these leadership essay tips will make it easier for you to write an outstanding paper! Make sure to check our website for sample essays on leadership!

Leadership Essay Ideas and Topics

Selecting the best topics for your essays on leadership is vital. When composing this paper, you will focus on two main areas revolving around your leadership style and the memorable moment when you demonstrated leadership. Please note that these two areas usually overlap because while recounting that moment you demonstrated leadership, you will also show your leadership style.

Whichever area you choose to focus on, use anecdotal evidence that proves the idea. Here, you can freely go with what feels best for you. Just ensure that the instance you use to demonstrate leadership is a real-life experience. This way, you will be best placed to choose a topic that makes your readers enjoy your paper.

How to Write a Leadership Essay

While this paper might sound like an introduction on leadership essay , it doesn’t mean you aren’t a leader or can’t lead people. So, how do you compose a killer leadership essay that impresses student admission officials? Here are ideas on how to write leadership essay that fetches good grades and makes a positive impression of your leadership potential.

  • As earlier hinted, you must research to choose a good topic that will impress your readers and portray you as an upcoming great leader.
  • When writing about a leadership concept, take notes of some credible sources of information. Find out what others have written about that topic.
  • Outline your essay to organize all the details you want to include. This way, you won’t forget to include anything your readers need.

Alternatively, you can check out past papers written on your chosen leadership topics. This way, you will have a strong basis for further expansion of your arguments and incorporating relevant ideas into your paper. However, remember to follow intellectual property laws to avoid plagiarism.

Formatting Your Leadership Essay

Tips for Writing a Leadership Essay

Do you want tips to help you write the best leadership essays that will garner good grades? Here are tips and insights to help you compose excellent leadership essays .

Define Good Leadership First

It would be best to define good leadership before proceeding. Take time to think about the best attributes that make one a great leader. Of these qualities you have figured out, which ones do you have? Outline the qualities you demonstrated in your memorable leadership moment. These attributes could be, but aren’t limited to:

  • The ability to motivate and inspire others.
  • Valuing others.

Lastly, review your list and select the traits you would wish to focus on.

Moderate Your Humility

Humility is an invaluable virtue that needs to flow through your papers. However, don’t overdo it when highlighting your leadership moment. So, draw the line between humility and self-humiliation. Just let your readers know what you did to benefit other people’s lives—period.

Don’t Use Another Person’s Voice and Style

When highlighting your leadership abilities and experience, remember to use your personal style and voice. Admission officers want to hear your voice and “see you” in the essay. Thus, allow them to see your personality in the paper the best way you know how to put it. You can use your reasonable sense of humor without overstepping boundaries.

Tell a Story About Your Journey

When addressing college admission officers, use your storytelling skills to describe your leadership journey. Give them an engaging story that shows them your true leadership potential. Your story should exhibit the traits you believe are instrumental in helping you lead others. The narrative should tell the readers about the following:

  • That you faced a real-life challenge.
  • How you solved the problem.
  • How your leadership style and potential have grown over the years.
  • Any specific challenge or moment that has helped you grow in your leadership.

Choose a Case in Which You Played a Key Role

Your leadership doesn’t necessarily mean you are always at the help of things or people. Instead, it means that you helped solve a problem that affected others. Thus, don’t fear highlighting a moment just because you were not calling the shots. Why? Because the officials are looking for the results you helped bring to the table and not necessarily the position you occupied in the story.

Thus, you should focus more on the improved position others found themselves in after your intervention instead of the position you occupied. Also, don’t mind more about the story’s title, especially when brainstorming. If you tell an impactful story, the title will automatically fall in place.

Acknowledge Other People’s Contributions

We said in previous sections that you should tell the reader more about your leadership skills and journey. Up to this point, so good. However, you shouldn’t become so egoistic that you assume you aren’t an island. Your personal statement should indeed be personal, but it’s better to remember that other people still have a stake in your journey.

So, give other people their deserved credit wherever they contributed to your success. Credit others for their loyalty, hard work, and any insights they offer. This way, you will portray your leadership as inclusive and not a one-man army that gives all the credit to one man.

Solve Problems

Lastly, your essay should focus on solving problems. There is no point in telling a long story if it doesn’t bring out this element. Why? Because leadership essentially solves other people’s problems. If this element is missing, then you were not leading. Most likely, you were merely occupying a position or exercising authority but not leading.

Do you remember how you solved that issue on your team amicably? Did you negotiate peace between team members whose rift was threatening to tear the team apart? Then, tell it out because that is all the admission officers are looking for in the narrative.

Leadership Essay Example

Nothing will power your leadership writing skills like a perfect example of leadership essay . This section has three excellent excerpts from the introductions, bodies, and conclusions of leadership papers.

  • Introduction

The floor was full of press cameras and microphones ready to capture a critical event. The venue was filled with different types of furniture, leather seats, and the who-is-who in the media industry that could change the entire media industry. Until then, I never saw myself as a leader, although I knew that this event was bigger than me, a moment that I could positively influence for the benefit of everyone present.

Gaining experience is one of the pillars of growing up in one’s leadership journey. The reason is that leadership isn’t a theory or concept captured in the heads, arguments, or counterarguments of so-called leadership gurus. Instead, it’s about practical life engagements that solve people’s problems in the real world. Thus, experience is the best tool to provide leaders with the opportunities to face and solve problems, make sound decisions, and learn from their failures and successes. All great leaders cherish such experiences and use them to grow and develop their leadership.

  • Conclusion

In my view, leadership is about solving problems and meeting people’s needs, period. That’s the big picture, and the rest are minor details. My ability to empathize with others and give them a helping hand instead of pointing fingers at them summarizes my leadership philosophy. I hope to use this drive to be on the solution side of life, to prescribe solutions instead of just describing and decrying problems.

My Favourite Leader Essay

Leadership is an important aspect of any society, as good leaders help to provide direction, guidance, and organisation. Leaders can also help to bring about change and progress in a society by setting goals and working towards them. Leaders can also play a critical role in solving problems and conflicts that arise within a society. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘My Favourite Leader’.

My Favourite Leader Essay

100 Words On My Favourite Leader

My favourite leader, Mahatma Gandhi, was a beacon of hope and justice in a time of oppression. His unwavering dedication to the cause of Indian independence and the rights of the marginalised inspired countless individuals to join him in his fight for a better world. Gandhi's bravery and resilience in the face of adversity were nothing short of extraordinary. Despite facing discrimination and violence, he never wavered in his commitment to nonviolent resistance and always stood firm in his beliefs. His leadership style was truly visionary, as he believed in the power of the individual to bring about positive change and encouraged others to follow their own conscience. His message of unity and compassion transcended boundaries and brought people from all walks of life together towards a shared goal of creating a more just and equal society.

200 Words On My Favourite Leader

My favourite leader is Mahatma Gandhi who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights and independence of his people. Born in 1869 in Porbandar, India. Gandhi received an education in law in London before returning to India to practise. However, he was not content with simply being a successful lawyer and instead sought to bring about positive change in the world. Gandhi's political career began in South Africa, where he fought for the rights of the Indian community living there. He faced numerous challenges and faced discrimination, and violence, but he never gave up. He also was on the forefront of the independence struggle for India.

Gandhi's leadership style was unique in that he believed in the power of the individual and the importance of personal transformation which is something I find truly inspiring.. He encouraged others to follow their own conscience and to be the change they wanted to see in the world. Gandhi also believed in the importance of unity and worked to bring people from different communities and backgrounds together. His ideas and actions continue to influence people today, and he is considered one of the greatest leaders in history. I only hope that I can follow some of his principles in my life.

500 Words On My Favourite Leader

My favourite leader is Mahatma Gandhi, who was an Indian independence activist and is considered to be the father of the nation. Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar, a small coastal town in Gujarat, India. He received his education in law in London and later returned to India to begin his legal practice.

However, Gandhi was not satisfied with simply being a successful lawyer; he wanted to bring about positive change in the world. Gandhi’s political career began in South Africa, where he fought for the rights of the Indian community living there. He faced numerous challenges and faced discrimination and violence, but he never gave up. Gandhi believed in the power of nonviolent resistance and used it as a tool to fight for justice and equality.

Gandhi's Philosophy And Nonviolent Resistance

Salt Satyagraha is considered as one of Gandhi's most famous campaigns, in which he and thousands of others marched to the coast of Gujarat to collect salt from the sea, defying the British law that imposed a tax on salt. This campaign was a symbol of resistance against British rule and became a turning point in the independence movement. Gandhi was also a spiritual leader and believed in the importance of living a simple and humble life. He embraced a philosophy of self-sufficiency and believed that people should rely on their own resources and abilities rather than relying on others.

Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent resistance and self-sufficiency has inspired many people to adopt a more sustainable and compassionate way of living. His ideas about the power of the individual and the importance of personal transformation have encouraged people to take action and make a positive difference in the world.

Gandhi's leadership and message continue to inspire and influence people around the globe, making him a truly remarkable and enduring leader. His leadership and determination inspired millions of people around the world, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. His ideas and actions continue to influence people today, and he is considered one of the greatest leaders in history.

Gandhi’s legacy is one of nonviolent resistance, unity, and personal transformation. His message of peace and justice resonates with people of all ages and backgrounds, and his influence continues to be felt around the world. Gandhi's leadership and dedication to bringing about positive change in the world makes him my favourite leader.

My Inspiration

One incident that inspires me the most about Gandhi, is the Salt Satyagraha of 1930. This was a non-violent protest against the British-imposed salt tax in India, and it was a significant moment in the Indian independence movement. Gandhi believed that the salt tax was a symbol of British oppression and he saw the Salt Satyagraha as an opportunity to unite the people of India against British rule.

He called for a nationwide protest in which people would march to the sea and collect their own salt, defying the salt tax and the British law that banned the production of salt by Indians.

This incident inspires me because it shows the power of nonviolent resistance and the ability of one person to bring about change. His leadership and determination were instrumental in leading India to independence and his legacy continues to inspire people around the world today.

Long and Short Speech on Leadership for Students

A leader is someone who has a powerful intellect and not mere intellect. Leadership is a skill that not everyone is blessed with, a skill that allows an individual to lead people for the greater good of society. Leadership can not be learned or taught but it is a skill that is developed through time. Leadership is all about guiding and leading the people in a group or organization which leads to the success of the group. Leadership is all about having a vision that will help in bringing a change in society.

We often see that many people claim they are leaders all based on the position they are in. They might be the managing directors or the CEO of the company. Does that mean having a good position is directly linked to being a good leader? And what are the qualities that make up a good leader?

Here we have provided long and short leadership speeches and along with that we have also given 10 line pointers about the leadership speech for students.

These speeches of great leaders will help the students to understand the qualities required to be a good leader.

Long Speech on Leadership Qualities

Good morning to everyone present here today. Today I am going to give a leadership speech and I hope it’s helpful. I would like to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity to speak about leadership.

So who is a leader? and what is leadership?. A leader is someone who can think and question and does not merely follow the herd. A true leader has a powerful intellect and they impact the people around them to work hard.

Throughout history, the world has produced great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Barack Obama, and the list goes on. So what is common between all these leaders that makes them truly grateful? What is the quality of all these leaders that made people believe in them?. Well, the answer is that they could guide huge populations of people for the greater good. A quality leader will always think about people and help them in solving problems and that’s what all the great leaders in the past have done.

Mahatma Gandhi after being in South Africa for twenty years came back to India after witnessing the discrimination that was done by the white people against fellow Indians. He taught people about Satyagraha and the nonviolent ways through which everyone could fight back the British. During all the nonviolent protests he was not just commanding people, he walked with everyone, he led the movement and that is the true quality of a leader.

Similarly, Barack Obama after becoming the 44th president of the united states of America, helped the country to fight the recession. American people were suffering during 2008 because of the recession as the country's economy was falling slowly. The middle class could not pay bills, There were no insurance policies for the poor and the country's growth was declining slowly.

Barack Obama was able to understand the difficulties that everyone was facing and he did what every great leader does, he guided the country out of recession. He made sure to lead from the front and fight the difficulties that his people were facing and that is the quality of a true leader.

So after getting to know about great leaders in the past, how can anyone figure out a leader? Well, there are a few qualities that define a good leader. A great leader motivates you to be successful. A leader is a great influencer who does not force anyone to follow him but due to his actions, people follow him on their own. A strong leader is also characterized by having a strong personality. An aura that makes people listen to him or her. A good leader is not about commanding people to do their work but it is always about helping people to get the work done.

For example, if a task is assigned to a group, a good leader will always make sure to distribute the task equally within the group and will also make sure to help anyone if they are facing difficulties. He or she also makes sure that there are no loopholes in the process and he makes sure that everyone finishes their work in time.

Leaders are not born, they are made throughout time and leadership is not an easy task. It cannot be done by people who allow their emotions to take control. Leadership is all about having a good aim and vision. A leader will always think about achieving the goal even if there are many hurdles in the way.

Leadership is always about impacting people in such a way that it will help them to reach their goals. It is about having the ability to decide on the worst picture possible. It is about seeing the bigger picture for a better future. Leadership is linked to communicating with the team and finding the answer. It is about showing determination towards your goal, it is about listening to the team and helping each other to find a solution, and above all leadership is about earning respect from the team and accepting the challenge without fear.

The qualities found in a leader are not cultivated in a day or a week but it is done after seeing a lot of failures and learning from them.  Does that mean you can never be a leader? Anyone can be a leader and it can be done by learning through failures. Leaders who possess great leadership qualities have earned and learned them with time. Leadership is all about thinking for the benefit of everyone even if it means you are at loss in the beginning. It is about thinking of society and how your leader's goals could help in the betterment of the country.

To conclude this speech I want to say that great leaders were not born great, they made themselves great by observing their surroundings and doing their best to change them. The real essence of leadership is when a leader pays attention to the needs of the followers and works in the direction to fulfil all those needs.

As I said before, history is filled with examples of great leaders, and one thing that is common in all leaders in the act of selflessness. They never thought about their gain but they always strived for the betterment of everyone. To be a great leader you need to have led people for the greater good. To be a great leader you have to be a good human first, show kindness to every living organism. So start cultivating the habits that will make you a good leader and I can assure you that the world will benefit from it. Thank you very much for listening. Have a great evening.

Short Speech About Leadership

Good morning to everyone present here. I feel grateful that I was chosen to give a small leadership speech for students. I hope my speech inspires everyone to be a good leader.

A leader is someone who is characterized by many qualities. Teamwork, hard work, calm, selflessness, help.

A leader is someone who always thinks and questions a situation to bring a solution. A leader never follows the herd but he or she is the one who is followed by people because of his or her ability to create an impact on people.

Great leaders in the past such as Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and so on have always thought of the greater good of society. They have always led by example and have always directed people in the right direction.

The qualities found in leaders are not formed within a day or weak but they are cultivated through years of hard work, patience, and learning from failures.

To conclude I want to say that great leaders are not born great but they make themselves great by being selfless. They always think about the bigger picture and will always try to help people who are in trouble. To be a great leader you need to be a good human first who shows kindness to every living organism around him or her. You can also be a great leader by cultivating these habits.

It is by their way of working and their words that make us follow them. India is a country that is the birthplace of different shining jewels in form of great leaders in the world. They are inspirational figures for the people of the nation and worldwide.

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri – A Great Indian Leader

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri is the name of the great Indian leader who has served our nation as a great political leader, patriot, and second Prime Minister of India in 1964. Shastri Ji also served the nation earlier as Police Minister, Transport Minister, Rail Minister, and Minister of Home affairs. His leadership qualities of firm determination, patience, honesty in words, and action gave him recognition in the whole world. Apart from simplicity, his unique way of finding solutions for different issues was appreciative. Being raised in a common family he was well known for the pain of the common people in our nation.

As an active politician, he made a lot of efforts to uplift the condition of the poor people in our nation. He was also a part of the Indian struggle for independence. The spirit of nationalism arose in Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri from a very early age. He was greatly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Annie Besant, and Swami Vivekananda. He was one who gave the slogan – “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”. He died in Tashkent in Uzbekistan on 11 January 1966. He was also awarded Bharat Ratna in 1966 after his death.

The Early Life of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri

Every great leader arises from the common people only. It is the qualities and the way of working that makes them popular among all and reaches this position. The great Indian leader Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was born to Sharada Prasad Srivastava and Ramdulari Devi on 2nd October 1904 in Mughalsarai. His father died when Shastri was very young. This incident made his family shift to Ramnagar in Varanasi at his maternal grandfather’s house. He completed his initial education in Mughalsarai and later shifted to Varanasi and took admission in Harish Chandra High School for completing his schooling. During his schooling only he was inspired by the great leaders of freedom of struggle for Independence. Later he completed his graduation from Kashi Vidyapeeth in Varanasi.

Marriage – Shastri was tied the knot with Lalita Devi of Mirzapur on 16th February 1928. Later they became the parents of six children. They were four sons and two daughters.

Arising of the Spirit of Patriotism

The feeling of patriotism and interest for the freedom of struggle in Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri rose at a very early age during his schooling. He was first inspired by his school teacher and in this way; he started taking interest in the freedom struggle. He was impressed greatly by the thoughts and words of Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda. His spirit for his participation in the Indian struggle for freedom was clearly depicted when he left his school for volunteering in different movements of struggle. He had been sent to jail several times in his life but he never lost his dedication. He became a member of the Servants of the people society that was founded by Lala Lajpat Rai. He under the guidance of Gandhiji also worked for the uplifting of the Harijans in Muzaffarpur.

Contributions of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri to the Nation

Shastri was a great political leader and his contributions to the nation are difficult to state in words. He spent his whole life serving the entire nation and also helping it to overcome difficult situations. He was the leader of the common people and therefore worked for their betterment. I will be enlisting some great works of this renowned personality that has brought a great change.

  • Made India self-reliant in farming – He was the second Prime Minister after Independence. The condition of the nation was not very good at that time. Our nation was dependent upon the other countries for fulfilling the need for food grains as productivity was very low in India. He was the leader who had the courage to make the nation become self-reliant for their food grain production as he fostered the Green revolution in 1965. He encouraged the farmers to increase their labor and thus productivity. This idea worked well and slowly the nation became self-reliant for food grain production.
  • Active Participation in Freedom struggle – He has greatly contributed to the freedom struggle for independence. He took part in different movements and therefore was imprisoned several times. He was the great follower of Gandhiji and thus followed him in the struggle for Independence. The freedom of India had been possible due to the efficient leadership of these great leaders that inculcated the spirit of patriotism and made them fight for their rights.
  • Fight for Harijans betterment – He was actively involved in the struggle for the betterment of the Harijans. He was guided by Gandhiji. He also removed his surname Srivastava and adopted the title Shastri that he had been honored after completion of his graduation.
  • Wise Leadership in Indo-Pak war of 1665 – Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Prime Minister when India was attacked by Pakistan in 1665. He then only gave the slogan of Jai Jawan Jai Kisan. It was a great way of addressing the people of the nation by giving the importance of soldiers and farmers in our nation. This slogan encouraged the soldiers to fight bravely for the nation and as a result, we won this war against Pakistan. It had all been possible due to the firm determination and great leadership of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Why is Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Exemplar for Everyone?

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was a very simple man with honesty, patience, firm determination, and courage as his great qualities. The death of his father made his life difficult but he made his way through all the adversities by facing them bravely as he was clear with his goal. His great leadership qualities made him a great political leader. He was a man of his own words and action in his both personal and political life. He believed in performing rather than boasting like the political leaders do today. He was a grounded leader and served the nation till his death.

He took the charge as a Prime Minister in a very challenging and difficult situation. Despite these challenges, he worked bravely and wisely to make the nation overcome these challenges. He directly communicated with people so that he can approach the problems faced by them. He has shown his eminent leadership qualities many times in the difficult situations of the nation. He also gave the message to people to become self-dependent and brave. This made him a beloved leader of the people.

The life of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri is a great inspiration for us and future generations. It is not easy to climb the ladders of popularity and success despite hardships and no political background. He is still alive in our souls because of his great deeds and ideas.

Here’s How Ivy League Schools Evaluate Student GPAs

A stellar GPA is one of the building blocks of a successful Ivy League application, and as the school year winds down, many students are anxiously seeking to give theirs a final boost. While most students and families understand the importance of a 4.0, few are aware of how top colleges evaluate student GPAs or what they look for when reviewing student transcripts. Though your GPA may seem to be a simple metric, nothing could be further from the case—colleges consider more than just the number, accounting for complexities such as diverse grading systems across schools, trends in grade inflation, and level of course rigor.

Here are three important facts to keep in mind about your GPA as you choose your courses:

1. Your GPA isn’t directly comparable to GPAs of students at other schools.

One common misconception among college applicants is that they can compare their GPAs with those of students attending different schools. However, the GPA is not a universal metric but rather a reflection of an individual's academic performance within their specific educational environment. As a result, comparing GPAs from different schools is like comparing apples and oranges. For instance, some schools offer a plethora of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and honors courses, while others may have limited options or offer none at all. Additionally, the weight assigned to AP versus honors versus regular classes varies from school to school. So, your GPA may not hold the same weight as those of your peers at different schools, even if you all have 4.0s.

Admissions officers understand that schools vary in their rigor, curriculum, and grading policies. Therefore, they evaluate your GPA in the context of your high school, considering the courses offered and the academic challenges presented. Instead of fixating on how your GPA compares to your friends’ from other schools, focus on challenging yourself and taking advantage of all the opportunities available to you at your school.

2. GPAs across the country are inflated—and colleges know it.

The last few years have seen surges in high school student GPAs nationwide. While GPA inflation has been on the rise over the last decade, average ACT composite scores are steadily declining. “For the 1.4 million ACT test-takers in the high school class of 2023, the average composite score on the exam was 19.5 out of 36, the lowest score since 1991,” according to The New York Times New York Times . The parallel differences, coupled with academic differences across schools, suggest that GPA must be considered in tandem with multiple other factors. Simply put, an A no longer means what it used to on a transcript.

Fallout Dethroned In Amazon Prime Video s Top 10 List By A New Offering

Google chrome gets second emergency update in a week as new exploit confirmed, metallica makes history with their new no 1 single.

Ivy League schools and other top colleges are well aware of this trend and evaluate student GPAs alongside other metrics such as standardized test scores and AP exam scores in order to better understand a student’s academic skill sets. While some Ivy League and other top schools remain test-optional , they still emphasize course rigor and the context from your high school profile to understand the grades on your transcript.

3. Colleges will recalculate your GPA.

Given the abundance of variables in GPA calculations, colleges often recalculate the metric to create a standardized baseline for comparison between students across different schools. The recalibration may involve adjusting for variations in grading scales or the weighting of honors, IB or AP courses. The University of California system, for example, calculates students’ UC GPAs by converting grades to grade points (an A is equivalent to four points, a B to three points and so on) for classes taken between the summer after 9th grade and summer after 11th grade, and adding one point for each honors class, and dividing by total classes taken to yield final GPA. (Variations exist for in-state versus out-of-state students and by high school. Be sure to calculate your GPA following the UC issued guidelines.)

Other colleges also take additional factors that impact academic performance into consideration, and envelop GPA into a broader, holistic consideration. For instance, the lawsuit by Students for Fair Admissions against Harvard University over affirmative action practices revealed that Harvard rates students on a scale of 1 to 6 (with one being the most desirable) in academic, extracurricular, athletic and personal categories. A student’s GPA and test scores are folded together into an academic score which “summarizes the applicant’s academic achievement and potential based on grades, testing results, letters of recommendation, academic prizes, and any submitted academic work.”

This process aims to provide a fair and equitable evaluation of students from different educational backgrounds. Keep in mind that Harvard considers not only your grades, test scores, and academic rigor in this score, but also “evidence of substantial scholarship” and “academic creativity,” which can make the difference between a 1 and a 2 in the scoring system. These systems underscore the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity, showcasing your unique personality and creativity, and seeking to maximize opportunities to improve your performance within the academic landscape of your institution.

By understanding the complex way by which colleges evaluate students’ GPAs, you are better equipped to present a comprehensive and competitive picture of your academic achievements on your transcript and stand out in the competitive Ivy League admissions landscape.

2024 PGA Championship prop bet picks and PGA Tour predictions

T he best players in the world will be competing for the Wanamaker Trophy this week at the 2024 PGA Championship . The year's 2nd major is being hosted for the 4th time by Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. First round tees off on Thursday morning.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets from BetMGM Sportsbook among the 2024 PGA Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the heavy favorite at +450, and he's also the top-ranked player in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Rory McIlroy comes in at No. 2 in the rankings, and he also has the 2nd-shortest odds (+750) to win this week – which would be his 3rd consecutive victory on tour. Brooks Koepka may be ranked 29th in Golfweek's poll but he has the 3rd-best odds to win (+1400), with fellow LIV Golf member Jon Rahm being 5th (+1800).

Valhalla is a brute of a course, coming in at 7,609 yards as a par 71. The venue was renovated in 2021 in advance of this year's PGA Championship, which comes 10 years after the last time Valhalla hosted (2014). The overall length of the course is 151 yards longer than it was in 2014, so it should play even tougher than it did then.

PGA Championship – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. ET.

Xander Schauffele (+300)

Schauffele couldn't close out the Wells Fargo Championship thanks to a final-round 65 by McIlroy, and it once again raises some concerns about his inability to close out big tournaments. He could break through with his 1st major win this week, but taking him for a top-5 is much safer.

Rory McIlroy (+160)

McIlroy is still looking for his 1st major title since the 2014 PGA Championship, which just happened to be played at Valhalla. It'll take a great week for him to beat everyone in the field, but he should be in the mix on Sunday after winning each of his last 2 starts.

Jon Rahm (+333)

This time last year, Rahm was +800 to win the PGA Championship. That's not much longer than his odds for a top 5 this week, while his outright odds sit at +1800. There's no question he's being discounted because of his move to LIV Golf, as well as his struggles at Augusta, but Rahm is still one of the best players in the world.

PGA Championship – Top-10 picks

Brooks koepka (+150).

Koepka may have flopped at the Masters, but he's played well since then, even winning a LIV event in the last month. He should have a much better showing at the PGA Championship, an event he's already won 3 times, including last year at Oak Hill. He's a great fit for any difficult course like Valhalla because of the way he avoids costly mistakes and scrambles to save par.

Ludvig Aberg (+160)

If Aberg can notch a top 5 in his Masters debut, he can come in the top 10 at the PGA Championship. He's deadly accurate off the tee while still hitting it plenty long for a course with as much length as Valhalla, and his putter was excellent at Augusta throughout the week.

Cameron Young (+350)

Young has 5 top-10 finkshes in his last 8 major starts, which includes a T-3 at the 2022 PGA Championship. He still hasn't won on the PGA Tour, but he's come close several times and this week could be another near-win for Young. He's at his best when playing difficult courses that don't turn into birdie fests. Valhalla won't yield very low scores so Young should be able to hang around.

Other T10 contenders ( in order from longest odds to shortest ):

  • Max Homa (+275)

PGA Championship – Top-20 picks

Will zalatoris (+225).

Zalatoris at +225 for a top-20 finish feels like a fantastic value. He's finished in the top 10 in 4 of his last 5 starts in the PGA Championship or U.S. Open, with the only exception being a missed cut at the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Valhalla is a ball striker's course and Zalatoris has the length and accuracy to contend on Sunday.

Cameron Smith (+175)

Smith will need to keep it in the fairway in order to compete for the Wanamaker Trophy because if he starts spraying it off the tee, even his short-game prowess won't be able to overcome it. That being said, he's an outstanding putter and chipper so anytime he does miss the green, he'll have a chance to save par.

Corey Conners (+275)

Conners finished 17th at Kiawah in 2021, missed the cut in the 2022 PGA and came in 12th last year at Oak Hill, so he's had some success in this major championship before. His iron play will give him a fighting chance at Valhalla, even if his putter stays cold.

Other T20 contenders ( in order from longest odds to shortest ):

  • Akshay Bhatia (+375)
  • Alex Noren (+320)
  • Jason Day (+200)

PGA Championship – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold .

Cameron Smith (+115) vs. Joaquin Niemann (-150)

Niemann might have the higher floor, but Smith absolutely has the higher ceiling this week. For that reason, Smith is the better pick at plus money against Niemann, who's never finished better than 23rd in a U.S. Open or PGA Championship.

Jason Day (-110) vs. Sungjae Im (-110)

Im has been up and down all year and though he's shown signs of life in his last 2 starts at the RBC Heritage and Wells Fargo, he's just not a great fit for U.S. Open/PGA Championship-style courses. Day, on the other hand, has won a PGA Championship.

Sahith Theegala (-120) vs. Sam Burns (-105)

Theegala is a legitimate contender this week as he looks to take his career to the next level, showing the creativity around the greens to save par when he misses with an approach.

PGA Championship – Top Japanese

Hideki matsuyama (+100).

Assuming his back is fine, Matsuyama shouldn't have much trouble cashing this bet. There are only 3 other Japanese players in the field, none with better odds than +350; Keita Nakajima is the 2nd-favorite behind Matsuyama. It's surprising this line is only even money.

PGA Championship – Top Debutant

Ludvig aberg (+300).

Aberg was the top debutant at the Masters and he's the favorite to be the same at the PGA this week. He just has a complete skill set to perform well at any course. Theegala is the 2nd-favorite to be the top debutant at +900, with Stephan Jaeger , Akshay Bhatia and Jake Knapp also lurking.

PGA Championship – First-round leader

Xander schauffele (+2800).

Schauffele was the 1st-round leader last week at Quail Hollow with a blistering score of 64, and he now ranks 6th in 1st-round scoring average this season. If you have concerns about his ability to close at a major, take him to be the 1st-round leader at an even better number than his outright odds.

Alex Noren (+9000, +700 for top 10)

Back to Noren we go with this 1st-round wager. He's fired rounds of 64 and 67 on Thursday in his last 2 starts and has the 3rd-best 1st-round scoring average on tour. He's been in the top 10 after Round 1 in each of the last 2 tournaments so that's another way to play this.

More expert prop bet predictions

Group d winner: will zalatoris (+450).

Zalatoris is grouped with Tyrrell Hatton (+275), Matsuyama (+350), Day (+350) and Im (+400), yet he has the longest odds of the 5. He has a better track record at the PGA Championship than any of those players in the last 3 years.

Koepka and Schauffele both to finish in top 10 (+900)

Koepka loves the PGA Championship and Schauffele is on a heater with 7 top-10s in his last 10 starts. At +900, it's worth playing because they're 2 serious contenders to hoist the trophy on Sunday.

Red Lobster has abruptly closed dozens of restaurants across the country.

A look at the restaurant chain's website reveals 87 stores temporarily closed across 27 states, with some of them having their kitchen equipment up for auction on an online restaurant liquidator.

The liquidator, TAGeX Brands, announced Monday it is auctioning off equipment this week from 48 locations that have closed. The website says auctions are live and will end periodically on Thursday, and that each winner will receive the "entire contents of the Red Lobster location they bid on."

USA TODAY reached out to Red Lobster on Tuesday and did not get a response prior to publication.

Red Lobster considered filing for bankruptcy in April

The seafood chain considered filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month in an effort to restructure its debt,  according to Bloomberg .

The company had been getting advice from law firm King & Spalding as it looked to shed some long-term contracts and renegotiate leases, Bloomberg reported, noting that Red Lobster's cash flows had been weighed down by leases and labor costs, among other issues.

Red Lobster suffered big losses with 'Ultimate Endless Shrimp' promotion

In 2023, the seafood chain's " Ultimate Endless Shrimp " deal became more popular than expected, inadvertently becoming a key factor in a $11 million loss in the third quarter.

The limited-time promotional deal, in which guests picked two types of shrimp to enjoy nonstop for $20, landed a permanent spot on Red Lobster menus in June. Red Lobster's parent company, Thai Union Group, said in November 2023 that the chain was headed toward a $20 million loss for 2023. Now the endless shrimp deal costs $25.

Thai Union Group CFO Ludovic Regis Henri Garnier said in an earnings report call that the company was aware the initial price for the endless-shrimp deal was cheap. The offer was intended to draw customers into restaurants, but orders exceeded expectations, he said.

"We wanted to boost our traffic, and it didn't work," Garnier told investors in November 2023, according to  Restaurant Business Magazine . "We want to keep it on the menu. And of course we need to be much more careful regarding what are the entry points and what is the price point we are offering for this promotion."

2024 Kentucky Derby full finishing order and results: Mystik Dan wins in thrilling photo finish

10 lines essay on leader

Mystik Dan wins 150th Kentucky Derby

Mystik Dan is your winner of the 150th Kentucky Derby, winning in a photo finish by a hair over Sierra Leone and Forever Young. Mystik Dan entered the race with with 18-1 odds.

The underdog made up ground in the second half after the pack got off to a hot start with early leaders Fierceness and Track Phantom taking the pack through first half of the race in 46.63. The finishing order is 3-2-11-4.

Mystik Dan’s trainer Ken McPeek becomes the first trainer since 1952 to win the Oaks and Derby in the same year.

The 2024 Kentucky Derby was an incredible event that somehow exceeded its hype

Here’s what I learned about the Kentucky Derby today: It lives up to the hype and then some.

It’s a great event. The sound that comes from the grandstand as the horses make their turn towards home is something you can’t forget.

Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan wore the same bridle to win their races

The press conference ends with the reveal that Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan wore the same bridle to win their races. McPeek says maybe they should auction it off to charity. “That’s a pretty lucky bridle. I gotta get back there and make sure nobody swipes it.”

A Kentucky Derby love story

“Years ago, when Lance and I were dating, he was late to pick me up because he was at the races. I wasn’t going to go,” says Sharilyn Gasaway. Why she’s glad she did? “I didn’t know but my mom knew he was going to ask me to marry him that night.”

McPeek says he felt sure they had won even with that photo finish, and then gets choked up sharing how it felt to turn to his wife who was standing there next to him to see it happen.

'I was just smiling the whole time'

“I was just smiling the whole time. It’s an amazing feeling when you have the horse under you and you now they’re gonna go forward and forward and forward.” Brian Hernandez reflects on how strong Mystik Dan felt throughout the race, from a powerful start with sure footing all the way to the finish.

An emotional win for Mystik Dan owner

“To me, this is for him,” says owner Lance Gasaway, whose father passed away a year ago today. “Dad would’ve loved it, he loved the game."

Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan were too fast for each other

Thorpedo Anna, the winner of Friday night's Kentucky Oaks, and Mystik Dan used to be training partners. But then they weren't anymore. Why? McPeek says they were too fast for each other and that you don’t want to push them over the edge.

Jockey jokes about photo finish wait

“From the fastest two minutes in sports to the longest,” says Brian Hernandez with a laugh, referencing the long minutes of waiting to hear which horse won the photo finish.

Mystik Dan jockey reflects on race

“Oh god, did we win the Kentucky Derby?” The thoughts on jockey Brian Hernandez’s mind the second after he crossed the finish line.

“My horse was just cruising along so comfortably, it never felt like we were going that quickly. Other horses were piling up and we had a little pocket there. We may have taken a little off the inside fence but that’s okay," said Hernandez.

Mystik Dan, the 'old soul'

“This horse is an old soul, he’s just so chill,” says Sharilyn Gasaway, one of Mystik Dan’s owners.

No Preakness guarantee yet

Trainer Kenneth McPeek didn’t commit to running in the Preakness. Says he doesn’t make fast moves, "never make a decision until you absolutely have to."

'I believe in mojo'

'I believe in mojo'

(Photo: Hannah Vanbiber / The Athletic)

"I believe in mojo," Mystik Dan trainer Kenneth McPeek said.

McPeek has praise for his jockey, too, not just the mojo. “This is typical Brian, he knows what he’s doing out there. We rarely second guess anything he does.”

Nando Di Fino

What happened to Fierceness?

Favorite Fierceness ultimately finished in 16th, which put him below the alternate, Epic Ride, The offspring of Justified, Just Steel and Just a Touch (who a few people picked as the winner on the broadcast) finished in the bottom five.

Fierceness’ low finish probably took down a lot of exacta and trifecta bets where bettors paired their longshot pick with the 3-1 favorite. I’m sure we’ll get some answers later as to what happened with Fierceness.

Mystik Dan’s jockey still in shock

“It still hasn’t sunk in," said Mystik Dan’s jockey Brian Hernandez. Hernandez hails from Lafayette, La., something Louisianans are very proud of.

"We have to thank all the guys back at the barn…. I don’t know how long it’ll take to sink in but it’s a surreal moment."

Full finishing order

Here is the full finishing order of the 150th Kentucky Derby. Fierceness, the big favorite before the race, finished just behind Epic Ride, who was a late add this week after a scratch.

  • Sierra Leone
  • Forever Young
  • Catching Freedom
  • T O Password
  • Honor Marie
  • Track Phantom
  • West Saratoga
  • Domestic Product
  • Society Man
  • Grand Mo The First
  • Just A Touch

The press is awaiting the winners. As are these hats and seats.

That was an expensive sip

Woodford Reserve made only 150 bottles of the “Baccarat” version. One of those has been set aside for the winner, although it wasn’t clear when they would receive the bottle.

The Baccarat edition costs $15,000. You can get the regular 150 bottle (seen on the stage) for about $45-50 at your local liquor store.

Someone got thirsty?

Someone got thirsty?

(Photo: Andrew DeWitt / The Athletic)

Here at the winners press conference, it appears someone broke into the Woodford Reserve bottle early and took a nice swig out of one of the bottles.

Given the level of drinking we’ve seen here today, that isn’t too surprising.

Oh, you thought the racing was over?

If you thought the party ended with the Kentucky Derby… not so fast. There’s still racing at Churchill Downs. In about 30 minutes, Race 13 will go off, with several Derby jockeys on different horses. Discreet Mischief is the 9/5 current favorite
