Nani gentleman Telugu movie

How is Nani’s performance? Nani is superb in the film as usual with one huge emotional block that would again put him among the best actor of the generation category. He shows slight variations between the different roles he portrays with ease. Given the twist we have one feels things might have been more exciting or rather it would have been exciting to see the actor go all out.

Nani gentleman Telugu movie

First half of the film is pretty simple with two love tracks involving two pairs. The love tracks in itself are very ordinary and don’t bring anything fresh to the table. Things get interesting towards the interval mark and it is continued in the second half in parts which are very engaging. The problem as we said it gets gripping in parts and also few songs which come as huge speed breakers. Overall it’s a pretty average fare thanks to those few parts of well executed moments.

Nani gentleman Telugu movie

Drawbacks? First half Song placement Weak twist

Nani gentleman Telugu movie

Did I enjoy it? In parts

Will you recommend it? With great reservation though

A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW – Review by Susan Granger

“It is the business of times to change and gentlemen to change with them,” explains Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov (Ewan McGregor) in this eight-episode mini-series adaptation of Amor Towles’ acclaimed 2016 novel about love and loss.

Count Rostov’s saga begins in 1921, after he’s caught in the Russian Revolution which designated former nobility as enemies of the state. A Bolshevik tribunal sentences him to spend the rest of his life within the confines of Moscow’s Hotel Metropol – not in the elegant suite he’d previously occupied but in a drafty attic, formerly used as servants’ quarters. Should he ever leave, he will be shot on sight.

Haunted by memories of his bucolic past and taunted by Osip (Johnny Harris) from the Russian Secret Police, Count Rostov is soon befriended by precocious nine year-old Nina Kulikova (Alexa Goodall), who has explored every nook and cranny of the hotel, showing him secret passageways and locked rooms filled with confiscated treasures.

In turn, given his extravagant nature and impeccable manners, childless Count Rostov enthralls inquisitive Nina with stories about his glamorous aristocratic past, instructing her on precise and proper etiquette.

Watching her grow into womanhood, their bond grows deeper, aided and abetted by their makeshift family: other long-term hotel residents as well as the waiters, bartenders, cooks, seamstress, barber, and musicians.

Nina’s fate becomes even more intertwined with his after she marries. Determined to follow her Soviet soldier husband to Siberia, yet unable to travel with a child, she leaves her five year-old daughter Sofia (Billie Gadsdon) in his care.

As years go by, Count Rostov becomes increasingly romantically involved with ambitious actress Anna Urbanova (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and more embroiled in the sociopolitical ramifications (terror, famine, mass murder) of the Communist State.

Adapted by Ben Vanstone and directed by Sam Miller, the plot is filled with dramatic twists and turns, set in and around the iconic hotel, as Ewan McGregor delivers one of his most compelling performances, bringing depth and humanity to irrepressible Count Rostov.

FYI: In real life Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are married; they met playing lovers in Fargo .

On the Granger Gauge of 1 to 10, “A Gentleman in Moscow” is an intoxicating 7, streaming on Showtime/Paramount +.

Now streaming on:

Guy Ritchie's "The  Gentlemen " plays like a tall tale, a yarn heard at the corner pub, filled with exaggerations and embellishments, where the storyteller expects you to pay his bar tab at the end. And maybe you won't mind doing so. The narrator here is a conniving unscrupulous private detective (redundant adjectives, perhaps) named Fletcher ( Hugh Grant ), who glories in all he knows about the intersecting criminal-drug-lord elements operating in England, and sets out to blackmail ... everyone ... with a screenplay he's written, where he lays it all out, naming names. Fletcher's screenplay is called "BUSH," bush, in this case, a euphemism for "marijuana," this being an incredibly complicated tale about the "turf war" in the marijuana business: everyone knows legalization is coming, and fast. The end days are nigh. The "bush" double entendre is also present, just for the chuckles factor, and gives you an idea of the overall tone.

The players on board are an American named Mickey Pearson ( Matthew McConaughey ), who sees an opportunity in the languishing English aristocracy, sitting in their dilapidated manors dreaming of the good old " Downton Abbey " days. Mickey swoops in and cuts deals with "the toffs" in exchange for being allowed to grow marijuana on the property. Speaking of "Downton Abbey," Mickey is married to Roz ( Michelle Dockery , aka "Lady Mary" in "Downton Abbey"), a "Cockney cleopatra" (in Fletcher's words), who runs an auto body shop with only women mechanics. (More could be made of Roz and her business. It's fascinating, the glimpse we get.) Mickey loves his wife, and is ready to retire from the weed business. Two rivals emerge as potential buyers: an American Jewish billionaire ( Jeremy Strong ) and a Chinese-Cockney gangster named Dry Eye ( Henry Golding ). The wild card is Colin Farrell's "Coach," an Irish guy who runs a boxing club, who keeps insisting he's not a gangster, although he behaves consistently in gangster-ish ways. Mickey's right-hand man is Ray (Charlie Hunnan), a mild-mannered man who looks like a desk clerk until you see him in action. Then he's terrifying. The " gentlemen " of the title is clearly meant sarcastically.

How all of this fits together is almost wholly in the hands of Hugh Grant, who gives an extraordinary performance, considering the circumstances. The script, which Ritchie co-wrote with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies , plays around with all the genre tropes, but the overriding structure is Fletcher "pitching" his script—of these so-called real life events—to an increasingly horrified Ray. Fletcher is a parasite, one of those tabloid "writers" who loves to be "in" on things, who sees people and their reputations as disposable, who adores explaining how much he knows, how much he has captured with his bazooka-sized telefoto lens. This "pitch" goes on for the entirety of the film, and so as scenes unfold, with Grant narrating them, it is as though the scenes emanate from Fletcher's imagination, when in reality we are seeing what really happened. Or are we? Fletcher is far from reliable. The entire script of "The  Gentlemen " is really, then, a script within a script, and this is its ace in the hole. There's always one layer between us and the characters.

I could have lived without the running jokes about "funny-sounding names" (it's " Sixteen Candles "' "Long Duk Dong" all over again), and I could have lived without the scene where a rape is threatened. The Jewish billionaire speaks in a stereotypically “gay” way (no other way to say it, he might as well be lisping), and the anti-Semitic stereotype is all over the place. Maybe that’s the point, but it's a tired point. There's much that is legitimately funny in "The  Gentlemen " and much that is legitimately disturbing. These things felt motiveless and cheap.

Although he has always been very very good, something exciting has been happening with Hugh Grant in the last couple of years. As he's moved into another age bracket, and out of affable self-deprecating Leading Man status, a formidable character actor has risen. As a character actor, his options broaden, and Grant has been taking full advantage. The one-two punch of " Paddington 2 " and "A Very English Scandal"—coming out in the same year—is a perfect example. Grant was using all of these other acting muscles he normally hadn't been asked to use, and it has been thrilling to watch. And he's thrilling here, in a role which is mostly, let's face it, exposition. It's one long monologue. But you're riveted by him.

There's one moment where he puts his hand on Hunnam's knee, realizes it's an unwelcome touch, that he's been busted at inappropriate groping, and he then goes into this wild pop-eyed, "Oopsie #sorrynotsorry" facial expression. It had me on the floor. It's my favorite kind of humor, character-based, behavior-based. Because Grant is so singularly entertaining, and so broad (and yet connected) in his characterization and line readings ("There'll be blood and fucking feathers everywhere, darling," he croons with relish), he acts as his own gravitational force. Mickey Pearson may be the lead, but it's Fletcher who gets the last word.

Peconic baykeeper’s new project is a “love letter” to the estuary       .

gentleman movie review 123telugu

A new program launched by the Peconic Baykeeper aims to help visualize how warming waters and rising tides are reshaping the East End’s shorelines, by building crowd-sourced photo databases from different points around the Peconic Estuary that document the changing shape of the coast in real time. The effort is called Project R.I.S.E., short for Recording Inundation Surrounding the Estuary.

Fifteen stations have been set up, each consisting of a four-foot wooden post topped by a cellphone cradle, with a sign that asks passersby to put their smartphone in the cradle, snap a photo and email it to a website dedicated to compiling the photos in chronological order over the course of several years. The Project R.I.S.E. stations stretch from downtown Riverhead to as far east as Orient on the North Fork, as well as East Hampton, Southampton and Noyac to the south, and two at Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island.

“We’ve really tried to capture the estuary as a whole, not leaving any town out,” said Peter Topping, architect of the program and executive director of the nonprofit water protection advocacy group Peconic Baykeeper.

Mr. Topping grew up on the water, first at the East Hampton Town Shellfish Hatchery and later in his current position at Peconic Baykeeper — and over time noticed subtle but unmistakable shifts in the East End’s shorelines.

gentleman movie review 123telugu

“You would just notice these big flood tides and shorelines shifting, sandbars shifting, and it just seems like there’s more and more flooding happening more and more often, even on these calm, sunny days.”

Long Island sea levels are projected to rise between 13 and 25 inches by 2050, and as much as 69 inches — nearly six feet — by the end of this century, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The project, first reported by the East End Beacon, has been underway for only two weeks but is already showing promise, Mr. Topping said in an interview.

“We’re already getting submissions,” he said, explaining how he sought to make the process as easy and seamless as possible in order to get the public engaged.

“You don’t need an app. You don’t need an account and all the photos being submitted are anonymous,” he said. “I think people are a little wary of their information being all over the place.”

Once snapped, photos should be emailed to [email protected] , with the subject line indicating the station where the photo was taken.

“What’s really cool about this platform is that you can go on the webpage for each site and download and look at any of the pictures,” Mr. Topping said.

The project is part of an effort to educate the community about the growing threat of climate change, particularly summer visitors who are out east only a few months a year.

“Any of us that spend time along the coast, we see the increased flooding. But we have a lot of people living on the East End who are seasonal,” Mr. Topping said.. “You see it every spring: You find the kayaks all over the place because people leave them just above the high tide line. And I think there’s kind of a lack of a public perception — especially with our seasonal community — with grasping some of these changes. I just thought it was a great way to capture what’s going on around the estuary as a whole.”

Mr. Topping said the project has been funded with grants through the Peconic Estuary Partnership for the next five years.

“I think at five years you’re going to see a little bit going on,” he said, “but I think once you start looking at 10, 15, 20 years … we’re going to see some trends of water levels rising.”

gentleman movie review 123telugu

With plans to add at least several more stations around the estuary’s shoreline, Mr. Topping is confident in the program’s promise.

“I thought it’d be a great project for students that were interested in doing science projects related to climate change. I think there’s a lot of potential. I don’t know exactly where this is going to go, so it’s kind of exciting and feels like a new frontier,” he said, adding that, for him, the project is more than just a science experiment.

“I love the Peconic Estuary — that’s why I’m in the position I’m in right now. So I kind of think of it as a love letter to the Peconic.”

‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ Finale Will Make You Cry, if Only for a Moment

ONE LAST BOW

The series finale of Ewan McGregor’s hotel drama brought tears to my eyes—even if only for a moment.

Fletcher Peters

Fletcher Peters

Entertainment Reporter

L-R Daniel Cerqueira as Vasily, Beau Gadsdon as Sofia, Ewan McGregor as Count Rostov, Lyes Salem as Andrey, Leah Harvey as Marina and Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson as Emile in "A Gentleman in Moscow."

Ben Blackall/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME

We’ve reached the end of A Gentleman in Moscow , but we can’t wrap things up without one final escapade for Alexander ( Ewan McGregor ), Anna ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead ), and Sofia (Beau Gadsdon). Before the finale wraps, they’ll need to become spies for the American government—this way, Sofia will have a ticket out of the corrupt Russian leadership.

The plan sounds simple enough. While Sofia is off performing at the conservatory in Paris, she’ll sneak off in the middle of the show to deliver the important tapes Alex recorded from dinner a few nights ago. She’ll head to the American Embassy in Paris, hand over the evidence, and Richard (Lucian Msamati) will get her on the next plane to the United States. Then, once everything has arrived safely, Richard will call every phone at the Metropol Hotel, alerting Alex to his child’s safety.

Sofia is fitted for her recital dress—really one of the most gorgeous dresses I’ve seen all year, a fit that would look marvelous on Anne Hathaway—by Marina (Leah Harvey), and Alex is speechless. “You look so grown up,” he says through tears. Wait…am I also crying? This is kind of adorable. I’ve spent weeks complaining about how much I want this show to end, but now, I’m a little sad it’s coming to a close. Just two episodes ago, Sofia was giggling while hiding a thimble in Alex’s room—now, she’s a woman.

Sofia is fully on board with the plan, but she has one request: If she’s going to do this, Alex and Anna need to join her in America, too. Ugh. We know that’s not possible, Alex knows that’s not possible, but Sofia—sweet, youthful, naive Sofia—still has a dream. Alex lies and says that he and Anna will be right over following her journey.

While grabbing a final drink at the bar with Anna, Sofia mentions how excited she is to live life in America with her and Alex. Anna is confused for a second—wait, she’s not going to America with Sofia—and then understands. Alex had to create this lie to ensure Sofia’s safety. Anna goes along with it, and after a few stories about Sofia’s mom Nina (Leah Balmforth), Sofia is sent to one last dinner with Alex.

This is all getting to be a bit too saccharine—we could’ve cut to Paris after the dress bit. Alex and Sofia are nearly sobbing into their pork chops, crying about how much they’ll miss one another and how worried they are for their safety. “I shall be incredibly sad in your absence,” Alex says, his voice shaky, “but I’ll be full of joy thinking of the adventures that you’ll have.” How is Sofia still blind to the fact that he’s not coming with her, even after this?

Everyone says goodbye to Sofia while pretending that this is only a two-week jaunt, so as to not disturb the Bishop (John Heffernan), who suspects something is afoot. Everyone on staff invites Alex to a big party to get his mind off of Sofia’s departure—they drink, juggle knives, gossip. Alex tells an old wives’ tale about a bloody apple that provides the chance to live life over again if eaten; he says he wouldn’t eat it at all. Life is good. He loves its imperfections.

Osip confronts Alex after the dinner because, of course, we have to wrap up this pointless arc in some way. I’ll keep it short for you: Osip (Johnny Harris) regrets the fact that he didn’t really get to say goodbye to his daughter when he sent her off. Although Alex may be thinking about leaving, he should really stay put and see Sofia’s departure to Paris as the best closure he can get. No matter what, after Sofia’s quest, the Russian government will hunt Alex down until he’s dead. He should distance himself from Sofia sooner rather than later.

Sofia arrives in Paris. She’s not worried: As the first performer of the night, she will have plenty of time to put on a disguise and sneak over to the American Embassy. But the organizer confronts her at the start of the show—actually, Tarkovsky has requested her to be the penultimate performer of the night. Godammit.

Back at the hotel, Alex and Anna are still trying to figure out what they’ll do to escape. All that matters is that they have each other. They make some vague plan about taking a train to Helsinki once they know Sofia is safe, but it still seems like Alex will stay at the Metropol Hotel forever. Anna departs for her train to Helsinki, Alex promises to meet her there, but c’mon. Man is staying in the hotel until the day he dies. He wouldn’t risk anything for his girls.

There’s a bit of action intertwined as events play out in Paris and at the hotel. The Bishop sees Anna leaving and starts to get nervous—so he ransacks Alex’s room, looking for clues as to what’s going on. Alex threatens to shoot the Bishop, then chains him up in the basement while throwing all the prisoner files on his fellow Metropol staffers into a fire. They can now be free; there’s no record of any of them in the Russian system.

At the same time, Sofia finishes her performance and races off the stage. She cuts her hair off and changes into a disguise; then, she must somehow escape the theater while the conservatory organizer hunts around for her. This conservatory woman is on a damn mission—why is she so pressed about Sofia? Kids will be kids; let her run wild in Paris. Sofia escapes, barely, and we never see her again.

We do, however, hear every phone in the Metropol start to ring. She’s safe. She did it. Alex weeps. But…now, what’ll he do?

We don’t really know, that’s the answer. Sofia narrates that she never saw Alex and Anna ever again, but she did somehow hear that they made it out of the hotel safely. We cut to some vaguely European farm where an older Alex and Anna are living together; but there’s no real description on how this happened, and then the show just ends . OK, sure. If they’re going to end the show on such a lackluster note, I’ll do the same with this recap—whatever.

A Gentleman In Moscow Cast & Character Guide

Ewan mcgregor's historical drama weirdly copies his 2022 star wars show, the deeper meaning behind a gentleman in moscow episode 3's bees.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the finale of A Gentleman in Moscow.

  • Count Rostov finds family, love, and purpose in his confinement at the Metropol Hotel, despite his initial imprisonment.
  • The ending of A Gentleman in Moscow remains ambiguous, leaving Alexander's fate open to interpretation.
  • Love and sacrifice are the central themes of the show, as Alexander risks everything to ensure the safety and happiness of his found family.

The ending of A Gentleman in Moscow brings with it the conclusion of Alexander Rostov's story, with his 35-year stretch of imprisonment inside Moscow's Metropol Hotel coming to a halt. After returning home from Paris in 1918 to save his grandmother from the violence of Russia's Bolshevik revolution , Count Rostov is sentenced to life imprisonment for his status as a member of the nation's ruling class. However, instead of being locked in a prison cell, Ewan McGregor's character is confined to the walls of a luxury hotel in the nation's capital.

Alexander's is spared execution, unlike so many of his other social peers. The reason for the leniency is Alexander being incorrectly credited with a poem titled "Where is our Purpose Now?" The literary work, actually written in 1913 by Alexander's old friend, Mishka, was partially credited as inciting the Revolution. The count manages to carve out some level of existence for himself at the Metropol , with the novelty of his situation quickly wearing off. Along the way, Alexander Rostov finds the family he'd never had before, giving a man who'd lost everything something else to lose.

The Paramount/Showtime limited series A Gentleman in Moscow is led by Golden Globe and Emmy winner Ewan McGregor and his wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

What Happens To Alexander Rostov After He Leaves The Metropol Hotel Explained

The post-escape fate of mcgregor's character is unknown.

At the end of A Gentleman in Moscow episode 8, "Adieu," Alexander dons his hat and strolls through the doors of the Metropol Hotel. After all the phones in the building ring at once as Richard Vanderwhile's signal that Sofia is safe, Alexander can depart while knowing his surrogate daughter is in trusted hands. While Alexander is shown successfully leaving the building , the other side of the door isn't shown, so it's impossible to confirm what happens to the Count after this scene. Even the show's narrator, an older Sofia, confirms that she never knew what her father did next.

"I discovered that Papa had escaped the hotel, but what happened after remains a mystery. I like to imagine [Alexander and Anna] finally free, living out the rest of their lives together. They gave me the greatest gift of life. I'll keep them in my heart. Always. "

The sequence that's shown of Alexander's reunion with Anna in "Adieu" is shot in the same 4:3 aspect ratio as A Gentleman in Moscow 's flashbacks sequences, which were often from Count Rostov's point of view. However, as Sofia confirms that she never saw her parents again , this particular scene can't be a memory. Instead, what's being shown is Sofia's imaginings, dreaming of the two people who risked so much to save her enjoying a well-deserved, peaceful life.

Alexander does still have his stolen Finnish passport when he leaves the hotel, so it is possible he was able to flee the country and reunite with Anna.

The black apples shown during this scene are another sign that it's nothing more than Sofia's fantasy . Earlier in the same episode, Alexander tells the Metropol staff of an old legend from when he was growing up. The story tells of a tree hidden deep in the woods, bearing " Apples as black as coal ." If a person found and ate the apples, they would have the chance to live their life anew. Alexander immediately adds that he wouldn't eat the apples if he were to find them today, as despite his tumultuous life, it's a journey he doesn't regret.

Alexander is never shown telling Sofia this same story, but the presence of the black apples in the story's closing sequence suggests that he did share the tale with her at some point.

How & Why Sofia Flees Russia At The End Of A Gentleman In Moscow

Sofia's one-way trip to america took careful planning.

Despite being a staunch patriot, Alexander is still of the opinion that Sofia would have a better life in America than she would if she were to stay in Russia. Thankfully, Alexander's spying on the country's top brass in A Gentleman in Moscow episode 7 , "An Assembly," also presents an opportunity for McGregor's character to send his daughter to safety. The scheme is carried out in collaboration with Alexander's American ally , Richard Vanderwhile, who plans the operation for them.

Only Sofia is granted asylum by the Americans, with Alexander telling his daughter that the request for himself and Anna to receive the same treatment was simply too much to ask.

With the recordings from the meeting in her possession, Sofia heads to Paris as part of a musical tour. After performing, she cuts her hair short and changes her clothes to blend in with the crowd and leaves without being spotted. The powers that be grow wise to her scheme, as they move her performance slot from before the interval to the penultimate position in the running order. Thankfully, Sofia still has just enough time and barely manages to avoid being detected. After arriving at the American embassy in Paris, Vanderwhile arranges for Sofia to be flown to the USA .

Where Alexander Rostov Stands With Osip Glebnikov At The End Of A Gentleman In Moscow

Alexander & osip exchange declarations of friendship.

Alexander's relationship with Osip Glebnikov is intentionally unclear throughout A Gentleman in Moscow . Although Osip is essentially responsible for making sure Alexander doesn't break the terms of his sentence by leaving the Metropol, Alexander's jailer chooses to spend more time with his prisoner than is necessary for him to perform his duties. They engage in etiquette lessons, debates about literature, and even start to watch movies together. However, it mostly seems as though Osip is forcing the interactions to take place. Despite the ambiguity of their arrangement, Osip admits in the finale that he values their relationship .

The story of Ewan McGregor's Alexander Rostov from A Gentleman in Moscow shares some strong parallels to that of the actor's Star Wars character.

While warning McGregor's character of the danger Sofia is in - and by extension, Alexander himself - Osip says, " I like you, Alexander. I think of you as a friend ." The count replies in his signature guarded style: " As do I you, in a manner of speaking ." Osip may not have been the most valued figure to Alexander in his day-to-day life, but their friendship offered both men a different perspective. In addition, Osip also assisted Alexander return to the Metropol undetected following Sofia's trip to the hospital - an act that could have had both characters severely punished, if not killed.

Osip is also instrumental in making sure Anna departs for Finland without Alexander. By the time of "Adieu," Osip's wife and daughter are dead. So, Osip wants to make sure Alexander's family doesn't suffer the same fate.

Did Alexander Leave Manager Leplevsky To Die?

Alexander finally takes the revenge he's been trying to avoid.

Leplevsky is the biggest villain throughout the story of A Gentleman in Moscow , with Alexander's life at the Metropol Hotel becoming more difficult as his nemesis rises through the ranks. With Alexander's planned departure from the hotel imminent, it initially seems as though he's willing to let bygones be bygones and spare Leplevsky any acts of revenge. Unfortunately for the hotel manager, his last-minute discovery of Alexander's plan to escape results in McGregor needing to take action .

After arming himself with the dueling pistols from the manager's office, Alexander chains up Leplevsky in the bowels of the Metropol Hotel.

After arming himself with the dueling pistols from the manager's office, Alexander chains up Leplevsky in the bowels of the Metropol Hotel. At the same time, he incinerates the files the manager had been collating about the hotel's staff - Alexander and Sofia included. Leplevsky begs to be set free as Alexander departs , with the exchange between the two adversaries suggesting it would be a while before anyone finds the trapped hotel boss. So, while Alexander doesn't directly murder Manager Leplevsky, he could still be responsible for his death.

How Alexander's Imprisonment In The Metropol Hotel Was The Beginning Of His Life (Not The End)

Alexander rostov's personal life somehow flourished at the metropol.

When Alexander was sentenced to life imprisonment, he was in his early thirties. His only surviving family member was his grandmother, whom he had helped escape the country four years previously. In addition, he was estranged from Mishka - his oldest friend. Alexander had never married, nor fathered any children. Despite his life of wealth and privilege that had preceded his incarceration, he was deeply alone. Somewhat surprisingly, Alexander's decades trapped in the Metropol led to some of the most important relationships in his life .

Despite the early trauma of seeing Prince Nikolai being dragged out of the hotel to be shot in the street in A Gentleman in Moscow episode 1 , Alexander went on to hit a rich vein of social bonds. His friendship with Nina was vital during the early stages of his sentence, and although the pair struggled to stay on the same political wavelengths at times, their special relationship weathered the storm. Alexander also eventually managed to build bridges with Mishka .

Eventually, Alexander's on-and-off romantic dynamic with Anna Urbanova solidified into a solid foundation of love and trust, with the pair essentially becoming joint parents to Sofia.

If Alexander was a father figure to Nina, then he was essentially a grandfather in his role as generational caretaker when Sofia was left in the count's care. Alexander raised Sofia as his own , while making sure she never forgot her birth mother. Eventually, Alexander's on-and-off romantic dynamic with Anna Urbanova solidified into a solid foundation of love and trust, with the pair essentially becoming joint parents to Sofia. As a result, Alexander hit several milestones during his imprisonment that he either neglected or failed to achieve while he was a free man.

The Real Meaning Of A Gentleman In Moscow's Ending

Alexander's unconfirmed destiny compounds the story of love and loss.

A Gentleman in Moscow , like so many other stories, is about love. However, the show's theme of love is also tied into the concept of loss, and how the two interact with one another. The love that Alexander Rostov has for Anna and Sofia results in him putting their safety first , ensuring they are away from the Metropol Hotel and safely on their respective ways to their new homes at the time of him making his escape attempt.

Alexander Rostov's journey in A Gentleman in Moscow has been full of twists and turns, but the bees in episode 3 serve as a brilliant metaphor.

Alexander is fully aware of the risks to himself, Anna, and Sofia that their plan presents. Still, the love he has for his found family makes him willing to put himself in harm's way if it means there's a chance of a better tomorrow for the daughter he cherishes and the woman he loves. Osip acts in a similar vein by helping Alexander. Despite losing his wife and daughter, Osip chooses not to let his grief turn him bitter and instead makes sure Alexander doesn't suffer the same heartbreak.

Sofia's fantasy of her parents living out their days together is about as perfect an ending as the show can expect, with the unconfirmed nature of the scenario contributing to the dark beauty of the story's conclusion.

Sofia's fantasy of her parents living out their days together is about as perfect an ending as the show can expect , with the unconfirmed nature of the scenario contributing to the dark beauty of the story's conclusion. The trio would never have had the life they'd wanted in the building that brought the three of them together. Knowing this, they give their best effort to free themselves of the restrictions imposed upon them by Alexander's prison sentence. A Gentleman in Moscow 's final episode perfectly encapsulates the tale's message of sacrifice in the name of love.

Runtime 154 minutes

The movie is another huge ensemble of characters like hitmen, boxers, and a gangster's wife who all make up the larger wild adventure taking place over a couple of days in the crime world of Los Angeles.

While The Gentlemen is original in its own ways, it was (like so many other movies like it) clearly influenced by Pulp Fiction with its intersecting stories and unique chronological approach . Despite its violence, Pulp Fiction is secretly a comedy movie with it proving there can be big laughs in dark material. The movie was a cultural hit and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

The Limey (1999)

A british gangster heads to la to avenge his daughter.

The Gentlemen has elements of its central character being somewhat of a fish-out-of-water, with Matthew McConaughey's American gangster working in the UK to establish his business. However, The Limey previously flipped The Gentlemen 's concept with a British gangster visiting LA . Terrence Stamp stars in the Steven Soderbergh movie as a Cockney gangster who seeks the man who killed his daughter.

A great genre blend that feels like a mix between gritty British crime movies of the 70s and a more easygoing LA crime story.

Though it is a revenge tale, The Limey also has a fun energy with Stamp's charming lead performance as well as Peter Fonda's unexpected villain. It makes for a great genre blend that feels like a mix between gritty British crime movies of the 70s and a more easygoing LA crime story.

Get Shorty (1995)

A mob enforcer decides to produce a movie.

Director Barry Sonnenfeld

Release Date October 20, 1995

Cast Danny DeVito, Delroy Lindo, Gene Hackman, Rene Russo, John Travolta, Dennis Farina

Runtime 105 minutes

Elmore Leonard is one of the greatest crime authors of all time, and he helped develop a writing style that humanizes gangsters like the ones in The Gentlemen simply by having them talk like ordinary people . The characters in The Gentlemen are in the middle of a dangerous job, but they also have mundane, relatable moments as humans — something Get Shorty perfected way back in 1995.

Fans of the unforgettable and well-rounded characters in The Gentlemen will find Get Shorty more than scratches the same itch.

Get Shorty stars John Travolta as a gangster who decides to get into the movie business. The crime element mixed with the world of Hollywood is a lot of fun, especially with an all-star cast that includes Danny DeVito, Rene Russo, Gene Hackman, Delroy Lindo, and James Gandolfini. Fans of the unforgettable and well-rounded characters in The Gentlemen will find Get Shorty more than scratches the same itch.

Director Matthew Vaughn

Release Date June 3, 2005

Cast Daniel Craig Sienna Miller, Brinley Green, Jamie Foreman, Michael Gambon, Tom Hardy, Sally Hawkins, Burn Gorman

Runtime 105 Minutes

Matthew Vaughn's first movie showed a slick and stylish side to him that is a far cry from his later bombastic movies, but Layer Cake remains his best. Before Daniel Craig was 007, he starred in this British crime movie that, like The Gentlemen , follows a gangster in the drug business who is looking for a path to a legitimate way of life but finds dangerous obstacles around every corner.

Daniel Craig is terrific in Layer Cake as the lifelong criminal who is far from the deadly gangsters normally seen in the genre. He is joined by an excellent cast that includes a number of future stars like Sienna Miller, Ben Whishaw, and Tom Hardy.

The Gentlemen: 5 Reasons Why It's Guy Ritchie's Best Movie (& 5 It Isn't)

Sexy beast (2000), an ex-criminal is visited by his ruthless former associate.

Sexy Beast is an underrated British crime thriller that fans of The Gentlemen will be sure to enjoy. It stars Ray Winstone as a former criminal who is living a life of retirement and peace in Spain when a former associate named Don Logan (Ben Kingsley) arrives to convince him to do another job and will not take no for an answer. Like The Gentlemen , there is a central theme of the tension that comes with someone getting pulled back into the crime life they are trying to remove themselves from.

It is also a movie featuring more conversations between criminals than actual crimes with a simmering sense of dread whenever Logan is on screen. Kingsley earned an Oscar nomination for his fiery and hugely entertaining performance.

This bizarre crime tale from writer and director Martin McDonaugh is made up of various intersecting stories and characters revolving around Colin Farrell's beleaguered screenwriter and his dog-kidnapping associates. As he struggles with his unfinished script about a group of violent men, Farrell's protagonist finds himself in the crosshairs thanks to his loose canon friend (Sam Rockwell).

An equally enjoyable meta movie experience to The Gentlemen, Seven Psychopaths dazzles with its talented ensemble , keeps the audience hooked with turns in its story, and glues everything together with copious amounts of very dark comedy.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The rise and fall of jordan belfort, the wolf of wall street.

Director Martin Scorsese

Release Date December 25, 2013

Cast Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kyle Chandler

Runtime 3hours

Leonardo DiCaprio shines as Wall Street crook Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street, a breathlessly fast-paced style of iconic director Martin Scorsese. Matthew McConaughey also appears in a relatively brief — but totally scene-stealing — role as a mentor to the still-budding Belfort on his journey down into a shameless pit of excess and greed.

Though Scorsese's most famous crime movies usually focus on the mafia rather than white-collar criminals, The Wolf of Wall Street shares its most central themes and every bit of their exuberance and insight into the lives and mentality of its extraordinary, yet relatable, characters. This also thematically resonates with The Gentlemen, especially thanks to the appearances of Matthe McConaughey.

Gringo (2018)

The calamitous collision between several intersecting crime stories.

Director Nash Edgerton

Release Date March 9, 2018

Cast Diego Catao, Kenneth Choi, Joel Edgerton, David Oyelowo, Sharlto Copley, Melonie Diaz, Charlize Theron, Thandie Newton, Amanda Seyfried

In Gringo, a downtrodden middle management nobody at a pharmaceutical company fakes his own kidnapping in Mexico and begins a calamitous collision between several intersecting crime stories going on around him involving betrayal, cartel crime, and the pursuit of a revolutionary marijuana pill that could change the drug market forever.

David Oyelowo delivers an outstanding performance at the head of Gringo 's star-studded cast, bouncing off of hilarious turns from Charlize Theron and Sharlto Copley in particular. It is the kind of crime movie like The Gentlemen in which the fun comes from seeing how deep into trouble the characters get and how they can hope to crawl their way back.

Every Song On The Gentlemen Soundtrack

Goodfellas (1990), the story of infamous mobster henry hill.

Release Date September 12, 1990

Cast Frank Sivero, Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Lorraine Bracco, Paul Sorvino, Joe Pesci

Runtime 146 minutes

Martin Scorsese defined his distinct crime movie style with this quick-fire masterpiece about the whirlwind gangster life of infamous mobster Henry Hill. Goodfellas remains funny, frenzied, and fantastic filmmaking that sits comfortably above most other movies in general, let alone those in the crime genre. Like almost every gangster film released after it, Goodfellas influence on The Gentlemen becomes clear in a single viewing.

Every mafia movie, and certainly most crime movies in general, released after Goodfellas has copied it in some way or another

Henry Hill's never-ending battle to keep his life of crime kicking results in a saga of bigger and bigger highs, setting up an brutal yet entertaining fall. Every mafia movie , and certainly most crime movies in general, released after Goodfellas has copied it in some way or another and the dynamic between the compelling cast of characters is, for all intents and purposes, flawless.

Smokin' Aces (2006)

A performer-turned-snitch decides to testify against the mob.

One of the more cult movies like The Gentlemen is 2006's Smokin' Aces, which weaves a similarly multilayered tale featuring a stacked ensemble cast. A Las Vegas entertainer/wannabe gangster finds himself at the end of his wild ride and facing a death sentence from the mafia when his supposed hit is complicated by several opportunistic parties looking to capture or kill the titular Buddy 'Aces' Israel.

Joe Carnahan's highly-stylized crime comedy thriller is packed to the brim with action sequences

Joe Carnahan's highly-stylized crime comedy thriller is packed to the brim with action sequences and just about every kind of eye-grabbing trick and twist that it can fit up its sleeve as its colorful assortment of characters converges in a hotel in Lake Tahoe in pursuit of their prize. The movie also has a fantastic cast that includes Chris Pine, Alicia Keys, Ryan Reynolds, and Ben Affleck.

RocknRolla (2008)

A crooked land deal goes wrong.

Even though RocknRolla came out over a decade ago and features stars like Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, and Tom Hardy, it failed to win mainstream attention. However, there's no doubt that fans of the fast-paced action film The Gentlemen will find this lesser-known Guy Ritchie movie quite a treat.

The movie is essentially a battle of the hungriest and most powerful gangsters in London who are overpowered by an unexpected player.

Before The Gentlemen, RocknRolla was Ritchie dipping his toes back into the crime world with a madcap story. The movie is essentially a battle of the hungriest and most powerful gangsters in London who are overpowered by an unexpected player. Full of twists, turns, and enough action to ignite a fire, RocknRolla makes for an amazing watching experience.

Despite the end credits teasing a sequel, RocknRolla 2 still has yet to be released .

The Snitch Cartel (2011)

The story of andres lopez.

This Colombian American movie isn't exactly regarded as a fantastic piece of art, but it's still entertaining and thrilling enough to satisfy the fans of The Gentlemen thanks to its focus on the narcotics trade . Snitch Cartel is the story of a young man who sees his path to fortune and success by getting into the drug trafficking game.

The lack of well-known actors takes the experience to a whole other level — real, raw, and intense.

While it focuses on the lower-level drug figures trying to make it in the business, rather than the kingpins in The Gentlemen , it is still an energetic and fast-paced ride through this dangerous world. The lack of well-known actors takes the experience to a whole other level — real, raw, and intense.

Why The Gentlemen Reviews Are So Positive

Savages (2012), pot growers ben and shon face the mexican cartel who kidnapped their girlfriend.

Director Oliver Stone

Release Date September 27, 2012

Cast Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Blake Lively

Runtime 143minutes

Savages has a very different pace from movies directed by Guy Ritchie, including The Gentlemen . However, it's the slower beginning and the softer undertones that make the increasingly tense atmosphere feel even more intense. Starring Blake Lively as the girlfriend of pot growers Ben and Shon, the movie follows the two male protagonists as they face the Mexican cartel who kidnapped Lively's O.

The relationship between the lead characters provides an emotional anchor not always seen in movies like The Gentlemen

The relationship between the lead characters provides an emotional anchor not always seen in movies like The Gentlemen , and it makes the ensuing action all the more exciting. While the ending of Savages is very controversial, the experience leading up to it is a fun ride.

Brannigan (1975)

A chicago police lieutenant escorts a crime boss back to the u.s..

While the recent wonders of technology have been able to elevate the genre to new heights, there's nothing quite like the charm brought by '70s gangster movies. Brannigan is a 1975 film that follows Chicago Police Lieutenant Jim Brannigan as he flies to the United Kingdom to escort an infamous crime boss back to the States. However, the stakes are high, and Brannigan finds himself in an intense life-or-death situation.

The similar fish-out-of-water approach as The Gentlemen provides some fun cultural clashes , especially with American movie icon John Wayne in the titular role. This is Wayne attempting his hand at the Dirty Harry -type role, and while it doesn't work quite as effectively as Clint Eastwood's transition from Westerns to crime dramas, it is a fun old-school gem.

Snatch (2000)

A colorful group of characters search for a priceless diamond.

Director Guy Ritchie

Release Date January 19, 2001

Cast Vinnie Jones, Lennie James, Benicio Del Toro, Stephen Graham, Jason Statham, Alan Ford, Brad Pitt, Dennis Farina

Runtime 102 minutes

Undeniably one of Guy Ritchie's biggest masterpieces and achievements, Snatch captures all the best aspects of his filmmaking and writing style that he attempted to revive in The Gentlemen . Snatch is another crime ensemble that follows a colorful group of characters, from an American gangster to an Irish boxer to a trio of hapless thieves, all intersecting as they search for a priceless diamond.

The movie is funny and slick with a great sense of humor that leans more into laughs than thrills, meaning that Snatch is one of the most quotable Guy Ritchie movies . Ritchie assembles a terrific cast that is a mix of his frequent collaborators, like Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones, as well as big-name stars like Brad Pitt and Benicio Del Toro. The result is one of the most rewatchable and fun British crime movies of all time.

Pineapple Express (2008)

A group of stoners run from hitmen, pineapple express.

Director David Gordon Green

Release Date August 6, 2008

Cast Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Kevin Corrigan, James Franco, Gary Cole, Craig Robinson

Runtime 111 minutes

This Golden Globe-nominated film strikes the perfect balance between comedy and action. Starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, Pineapple Express has all the makings of a Guy Ritchie movie like The Gentlemen if it were produced by American comedy filmmaker Judd Apatow. When a process server and his marijuana dealer find themselves on the run from very dangerous mobsters, a wild hunt ensues, with plenty of hilarious and action-packed moments in between.

There is some great action set pieces, but the movie's real draw is its nonstop laughs.

It is a brilliant idea to make a full-blown action movie with useless stoners as the protagonists. Rogen is as funny as always, but Franco surprised a lot of people by delivering a hilarious performance that was a far cry from his more serious work up until that point. There is some great action set pieces, but the movie's real draw is its nonstop laughs.

Netflix's The Gentlemen Improves 1 Major Character From The Original Movie

99 and 44/100% dead (1974), a vintage war between gang bosses.

The title of 99 and 44/100% Dead alone is enough to pique someone's interest, but the good things don't stop there. This relatively obscure and forgotten movie from the '70s might not be a classic, but there's a lot to love here. In a typical war between gang bosses, the movie follows Big Eddie and Uncle Frank in a hilarious yet violent battle to consistently one-up each other in the most ridiculous ways.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the older movie was an inspiration to Ritchie as a filmmaker.

The kind of madcap style with zany characters resonate with The Gentlemen despite the many decades between the two movie's release dates , and it wouldn't be a surprise if the older movie was an inspiration to Ritchie as a filmmaker.

Interview With A Hitman (2012)

An elite hitman deals with the dangers of his past.

2012's Interview With A Hitman adopts a much more serious and somber tone than many other movies like The Gentlemen , choosing drama and crime as the main drivers of a thrilling and suspenseful plot. The audience joins a ruthless Eastern European assassin as he navigates the dangers of his past coming back to haunt him as he tries to find peace with a new crime family.

While it might not be as much fun as the romp of The Gentlemen , the movie is another look at a crime figure who is flawed but not evil and trying to make the most of the dangerous world they are in.

The Long Good Friday (1982)

Things go wrong as a crime boss attempts to go straight.

The Long Good Friday appears to have been a huge influence on The Gentlemen , with some scenes in Guy Ritchie's movie directly paying homage to ones from the excellent British crime movie from the 1980s. Bob Hoskins stars in the movie as a crime boss who is attempting to go straight by selling off his business to the American mafia. However, as the deal draws near. He runs into one catastrophe after another that threatens to destroy everything.

The premise is very similar to Ritchie's movie, and The Long Good Friday is one of the best gangster movies to come out of the 1980s.

The premise is very similar to Ritchie's movie, and The Long Good Friday is one of the best gangster movies to come out of the 1980s. Hoskins is a wonderful lead, a man who can be ruthless and intimidating, but also loves his wife (played by Helen Mirren) and jokes around with his friends. The movie also includes one of the most impactful final shots in movie history.

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

A group of criminals find themselves tangled up in a series of weird events.

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels is up there with Snatch when it comes to Guy Ritchie's best career moments, and as far as movies like The Gentlemen go, it doesn't get much better. Much like other Guy Ritchie projects fans have come to love, this movie is a raw and authentic collection of characters and side-plots. Cannabis growers, gangsters, loan sharks, and general thugs find themselves tangled up in a series of weird, hilarious, and action-packed events, in true Ritchie fashion.

A terrific introduction to the distinct rhythm of Ritchie's movies.

It is a terrific introduction to the distinct rhythm of Ritchie's movies. While it is smaller in budget and scale compared to his later movies, it captures the same energetic and thrilling pace that makes his movies so fun to watch. Watching Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels alongside The Gentlemen shows how far Ritchie has come as a filmmaker while also showing that he has had fun sticking to his roots.

The Gentlemen

From writer/director Guy Ritchie comes The Gentleman, an action/crime comedy that follows a prominent American cannabis dealer in London as he attempts to leave the industry for good. When word gets out that the dealer is looking to sell off his business, several opportunists emerge from the woodwork, employing every manner of schemes and ploys they can to undercut him and claim the market for themselves.

20 Movies To Watch If You Loved The Gentlemen

Here’s why ‘A Gentleman In Moscow’ season two probably won’t happen

The series is based on the novel by Amor Towles

A Gentleman In Moscow

Ewan McGregor stars in the TV adaptation of Amor Towles’ novel A Gentleman In Moscow .

Led by showrunner Ben Vanstone, the show follows aristocrat Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov as he returns to Russia in the aftermath of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, where he’s arrested and banished to a hotel attic by a Soviet tribunal.

Along with starring in the lead role, McGregor also serves as an executive producer on the series alongside Vanstone, Tom Harper and others.

Other cast members include Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Fehinti Balogun, Daniel Cerquieria, Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson, Johnny Harris, Leah Harvey and Josh Heffernan.

Will A Gentlemen In Moscow return for a season 2?

Probably not. The show is billed as a limited series, and while this doesn’t rule out a second season (as shown with Big Little Lies ), it does suggest that the chances are low.

It’s also hard to imagine considering A Gentleman In Moscow covers all the events in Amor Towles’ original novel, so any second season would have to go beyond the source material. Again, this isn’t always a dealbreaker ( 13 Reasons Why ) but it’s certainly an obstacle.

How many episodes are in the series?

Recommended.

The series spans eight episodes in total and is available on Paramount+. The finale was released on the streaming service on May 17.

McGregor will next star in director David Robert Mitchell’s ( It Follows ) sci-fi film Flowervale Street , alongside Anne Hathaway and Maisy Stella. The film is scheduled to be released on May 16, 2025.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Had Fun Seducing Husband Ewan McGregor in ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’

Winstead also talks about she’d love to do a project where she can lean more into comedy with something that’s funny and heartfelt.

The Big Picture

  • The Showtime series 'A Gentleman in Moscow' is a historical drama that follows Count Rostov's house arrest during the Russian Revolution.
  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Anna Urbanova, an actress whose love affair with Rostov deepens over time, with playful and emotional moments.
  • Winstead discusses working with husband Ewan McGregor, expanding her character from the book, and the liberating experience of embodying a confident woman.

Based on Amor Towles’ bestselling novel, the Showtime limited series A Gentleman in Moscow tells the story of Russian aristocrat Count Alexander Rostov ( Ewan McGregor ), who found himself banished to the attic room of the Hotel Metropol and threatened with execution on the order of a Bolshevik tribunal. With his life contained within the walls of the opulent hotel and the years after the Russian Revolution continuing to pass, the Count builds a life, friendships, and love from within. By no longer being able to go outside and experience the larger universe, the Count takes a journey of emotional discovery that gives him a different perspective on the world and the people around him.

In the story, Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Anna Urbanova, an actress looking to make a name for herself in Russian cinema and whose big personality easily attracts interest from Rostov, sparking a deep and meaningful love affair across the years. As their relationship deepens, it’s fun for the audience to watch Winstead and McGregor work with each other, in both playful and quite emotional moments.

During this one-on-one interview with Collider, Winstead talked about how lucky she felt to be able to work with her husband while playing such an incredible role, expanding the character from what’s in the pages of the book, how liberating it was to play someone so confident, the way the wardrobe informed her performance, what she and McGregor love about working with each other, and figuring out the accent. She also talked about returning for Season 2 of Ahsoka , and how she’d like to find a project that is a blend of funny and heartfelt.

Collider: Aside from the obvious of getting to work with your husband, Ewan McGregor, when this project came your way, did you read the book first or did you read a script first, and what was the thing that really grabbed you and made you want to do it? Was it something with the story that you connected to, or was it this character specifically?

MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD: Everything, really. I read the book first, mainly because it was something that Ewan was gonna be doing and I was really excited about it for him. I’d heard a lot about the book. I was familiar with it. It sounded like the most incredible opportunity for him to play this role in this beautiful piece, and because he read it first, he hinted to me, “There is a lady in there that’s very interesting.” But I really didn’t know from his comments whether she was somebody who was on three pages of the book, or who she was. And so, when I read the book and I got to know all the characters and the world, I just thought, “Oh, my God, what an incredible opportunity, to be this kind of woman, in this place, in this time, and in this incredibly epic story."

So, I threw my hat in the ring very casually because I wanted the show to be great. If they didn’t think I was the right person for it, I didn’t want them to choose me because Ewan was playing the lead. I wanted them to choose me because they thought I was right for Anna. I just threw my hat in the ring and said, “Look, I think this could be a great role, if you think I’m right for it.” And then, some months went by, and word came back that they were interested in me playing the part. It was just one of those really wonderful kismet things that came together. It doesn’t always happen like this, to find a project like this, that’s so beautiful, and to be able to do it with my husband, and to have a role that I absolutely love. It was just a really lucky thing.

'A Gentleman in Moscow' Review: Ewan McGregor Effortlessly Charms From a Gilded Cage

Because your character is expanded from what was in the book, did you know how she would be worked into the series?

WINSTEAD: I didn’t, at all. I got to read the first two episodes, because I wasn’t even in the first one, going into it, and thought, “Oh, my God, what a fun, fantastic woman that I get to be.” I was really excited about it, just from that. The sketch was outlined so beautifully in the book of their love story, but the details of it are sometimes left off the page in the novel, so I didn’t know how detailed they were gonna get with it on the show, and I was blown away. With every script that came through, I just thought, “Oh, my God, I can’t believe I get to play these beautiful scenes, and this woman is becoming more and more complex and distinct with every page.” I was really grateful.

She’s a bit of a whirlwind. She definitely makes an impression every time she comes into a room, and you make quite an entrance into the series with these dogs causing chaos around the dining room. How do you feel that entrance really sort of represents who the character is? And did you have to spend much time with those dogs?

WINSTEAD: The way that it’s depicted on the show was so great because they really managed to make it look like it was utter chaos. In reality, those dogs were the sweetest, calmest dogs. You just wanted to cuddle up with them and take a nap. They were so lovely. And it was mainly shot in separate pieces. Most of the time, I wasn’t really with the dogs. It’s an amazing look at great editing because it’s so great to watch and it feels so chaotic and real when you look at it. It was just fantastic. I find it so liberating to play characters like that, with that kind of confidence when they walk into a room, because that’s certainly not the way that I would walk into a room, but I love to get to do it on a TV show. It’s amazing.

Wardrobe Played a Huge Role in Defining Mary Elizabeth Winstead's 'A Gentleman in Moscow' Character

The style of clothing in this is just absolutely beautiful. What was this wardrobe like to wear? How did that inform the character for you, even in just the way you walked?

WINSTEAD: Oh, it’s huge. Wardrobe always makes a huge difference , just with every element coming together – the hair, the makeup, the shoes, the coat. You can’t really practice the physicality of a character, for me anyway. It just comes together when you’re on set that first day and all the elements are there, and the sets are there, and everything starts to feel very real. And then, suddenly you’re walking differently, and it all feels like you’re a whole new woman, and I loved being that woman. I loved the way that informed the character and made me feel so comfortable in my skin. Playing this kind of modern woman in a time that was not very modern at all, it just felt really wonderful to be that brave. I loved it.

Ewan McGregor Wore His ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ Mustache for So Long, It Will Always Be with Him

How did you feel about the blonde hair, and what did you think of Ewan’s mustache?

WINSTEAD: For both of us, those details add a different piece to your personality and you feel different. I felt more charming and seductive in my blonde wig , and he felt witty and quirky in the mustache. It was just so much fun. It feels like play. You’re getting to really go into a new world and be a different person and play with the actors around you. That’s the ultimate for an actor. It’s the best.

Chemistry is one of those strange and undefinable things, but it’s easy to recognize when you see it. At the same time, just because you have chemistry with someone in real life, it’s not necessarily guaranteed how that will translate on film. How did you find the experience of working together on this? What did you most enjoy about how he approaches the work and what he brings to the scenes that you guys shared together?

WINSTEAD: Because we met working together, that was really the foundation of getting to know one another. We have this very deep respect for each other, in terms of our work and the way that we approach it because we’re so similar without really ever articulating anything to one another. We just show up and do it. We just click because we have such similar sensibilities and such a love for the work and an excitement about it. That sparks the onscreen chemistry for us a lot. We love that and were having so much fun. That’s the best, when you have a scene partner who’s in the scene and loving being in it with you and loving connecting in that way. It lifts it up so much. And there’s nobody that’s more fun to act with than him, and that would be true whether he was my husband or not.

Before 'A Gentleman in Moscow,' Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead Were a Power Couple in This Crime Series

It seems like it would definitely make the romantic scenes easier, but when you’re doing scenes that are very emotional, does it make those easier too, or is that more challenging?

WINSTEAD: It was both, in a way. It was much easier. The emotion was just flowing all the time because it was so on the surface, but it was harder to control it, in a way. That was the one thing that I’ve never experienced before. I think I’m quite practiced, as an actor, at having the emotion, but dampening it down. Often that’s what we’re trying to do, because you don’t wanna be in hysterics on screen. That’s not real. People often try to hide their emotions or they try to keep it inside. It was harder for me to do that on this. The emotion would just well up, and I would be going in my head going, “No, pull it back.” That was an interesting thing to have happen because that was a totally new experience for me to not have to not feel like I was in full control over that.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead's 'A Gentleman in Moscow' Character is a Bold Woman Following Her Desires

All this time passes after the first romantic encounter that these two people share. I particularly loved how she told him that it was just simply because he never came calling. Was it refreshing to play a woman who has a sense of agency like that?

WINSTEAD: Oh, absolutely. It was a blast to play her. She’s playing with him, but it’s also honest. It’s just who she is. It was so much fun to just go, “I don’t feel like speaking to you this year, or next year, or the following year. But now, if you’re coming around, absolutely, I feel like it.” She’s following her desires, which was a very bold thing for any time period, really. It’s bold to watch a woman doing that, and it was so much fun to play her, in that way.

How did you approach the accent? Was it easy to figure out how you wanted to handle that, or did you keep working on it throughout the shoot?

WINSTEAD: It was an interesting one because I went into it not knowing what they were going to want. Most of the characters in it are meant to be Russian, but nobody really is and no one was gonna be doing a Russian accent. I knew that Ewan was gonna be doing a posh English accent, just to convey that aristocracy. The idea was that it would be mostly British accents, but even through a British accent, you’re trying to convey where somebody might come from, in terms of their class. For me, they really let me off the hook. We were all supposed to be Russian, so there’s a little bit of suspended disbelief there, so the accent didn’t have to be perfect. We’re supposed to be Russian, so we were just going for what we thought was right for the character, and I went for a loose British accent. I felt like she wouldn’t be very posh sounding because she’s not posh. She didn’t come from that kind of background. We don’t know what her background is, and she makes it up, half the time. That gave me a lot of freedom to be somewhat loose with her accent and to make her who I wanted her to be.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Excited to Return for Season 2 of 'Ahsoka'

It’s been officially confirmed that Ahsoka Season 2 is in development with Dave Filoni. When do you get clued in on what’s going to happen? Have they already given you a basic idea? Do they wait until scripts are finished and ready to be sent to the actors? How fully formed is it before they tell you?

WINSTEAD: I would say they wait until it’s pretty fully formed. I’ve spent a little time with Dave, and he’s forthcoming, in terms of his ideas, but that’s not necessarily what’s now on the page. So, I don’t know, really, what that is yet. I’m really excited to read some scripts to find out where everything is going, but I’m pretty much in the dark, in terms of what the concrete scripts are gonna be and what the story is gonna be.

Do you know what you’re going to be doing next? Are you going to do something else before Season 2 of Ahsoka ?

WINSTEAD: I hope so. I’m definitely looking at a few things and trying to figure out what the next thing is gonna be. I have time before potentially shooting another season of that to do something hopefully great. So, I’m on the lookout for it.

The 10 Best Mary Elizabeth Winstead Movies and TV Shows, According to Rotten Tomatoes

Do you have a dream project that you haven’t done, or a genre that you’d still love to work in?

WINSTEAD: I’m definitely in the mood to do something a bit comedic. Obviously, there’s comedic elements in A Gentleman in Moscow , so I got to do that a bit, but I do feel like leaning more into that. Something that is funny and heartfelt at the same time is my favorite thing , so I’m looking for that, but it could be the exact opposite of that. It’s just whatever strikes me, in the moment. We’ll see. I don’t know. I’m open to everything, at the moment.

A Gentleman in Moscow airs on Showtime and is available to stream on Paramount+ with Showtime. Check out the trailer:
