Google is no stranger to the technology. Back in the 2000s, the company said it applied machine learning techniques to Google Search to correct users' spelling and used them to create services like Google Translate .

Then, in the following decade, Google acquired DeepMind , at the time a little-known AI research company. It also introduced TensorFlow , an open-source machine learning framework that developers have used to build models with capabilities like image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and predictive analytics.

The company doubled down on its strategy in 2016 when CEO Sundar Pichai declared that Google would be an "AI-first company." Years later, that's set Google up for the generative AI wars, where it's now duking it out with competitors like OpenAI and Microsoft to make the best products in the sector.

It released Bard, its first AI chatbot, in early 2022, though it later folded that into its family of large language models that it calls Gemini.

"Every technology shift is an opportunity to advance scientific discovery, accelerate human progress, and improve lives," Google's CEO wrote in December 2023. "I believe the transition we are seeing right now with AI will be the most profound in our lifetimes, far bigger than the shift to mobile or to the web before it."

But what, exactly, do Google's latest AI tools do? And how do they compare to rivals like ChatGPT? Business Insider compiled a Q&A that answers everything you may wonder about Google's generative AI efforts.

Google didn't respond to a request for comment from BI before publication.

What is Google's Gemini?

Gemini is the name of Google's family of large language models. The search giant claims they are more powerful than GPT-4, which underlies OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Launched in December 2023, Gemini is multimodal, meaning it can recognize and understand text, image, audio, video, and code to generate human-like responses. Google claims the model can help with writing, brainstorming, and learning, among other tasks. That's because Gemini is trained on troves of public data, including "publicly available" Google Docs, and, soon, Reddit posts .

The model comes in three sizes that vary based on the amount of data used to train them. From smallest to largest, they include Nano, Pro, and Ultra. Gemini 1.5 Pro , Google's most advanced model to date, is now available on Vertex AI, the company's platform for developers to build machine learning software, according to the company.

How do I access Gemini?

Users are required to make a Gmail account and be at least 18 years old to access Gemini.

Web users can access the generative AI tool at gemini.google.com . Smartphone users can download the Google Gemini app for Android or the Google app with built-in AI capabilities for the iPhone. Those who own the tech company's Pixel 8 can expect to see Gemini Nano, the smallest version of the model, on their phones after the next feature drop that could arrive in June 2024.

Users can interact with Gemini's 1.0 Pro model for free. But for $19.99 a month, users can access Gemini Advanced, a version the company claims is "far more capable at reasoning, following, instructions, coding, and creative inspiration" than the free one.

Paid users can access Gemini in Google's workspace apps like Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets .

Users can also incorporate Gemini Advanced into Google Meet calls and use it to create background images or use translated captions for calls involving a language barrier.

How do I use Gemini?

Using Gemini is relatively straightforward.

Simply type in text prompts like "Brainstorm ways to make a dish more delicious" or "Generate an image of a solar eclipse" in the dialogue box, and the model will respond accordingly within seconds. You can also talk directly to Gemini using your voice.

Another way to use it is to insert images and have the AI identify specific objects and locations.

But don't expect the chatbot's outputs to be perfect. In February 2024, Google paused Gemini's image generation tool after people criticized it for spitting out historically inaccurate photos of US presidents. The company also restricted its AI chatbot from answering questions about the 2024 US presidential election to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation. And, in general, Gemini has guardrails that prevent it from answering questions it deems unsafe.

Google Gemini vs ChatGPT — which is better?

The question of whether Gemini is actually more capable than ChatGPT is up for debate.

Overall, it appears to perform better than GPT-4, the LLM behind ChatGPT, according to Hugging Face's chatbot arena board , which AI researchers use to gauge the model's capabilities, as of the spring of 2024.

One possible reason: ChatGPT's knowledge cut-off date is April 2023, whereas Gemini draws from the most recent information on Google in real time.

A chatbot test Business Insider did in 2023 illustrates Gemini's seemingly superior capabilities. When comparing ChatGPT's responses with Gemini's , BI found that Google's model had an edge at responding to queries regarding current events, identifying AI-generated images, and meal planning. What happened to Bard?

Google’s AI chatbot Bard makes factual error in first demo

The mistake highlights the biggest problem of using ai chatbots to replace search engines — they make stuff up..

On Monday, Google announced its AI chatbot Bard — a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT that’s due to become “more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.” But the bot isn’t off to a great start, with experts noting that Bard made a factual error in its very first demo.

A GIF shared by Google shows Bard answering the question: “What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9 year old about?” Bard offers three bullet points in return, including one that states that the telescope “took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.”

However, a number of astronomers on Twitter pointed out that this is incorrect and that the first image of an exoplanet was taken in 2004 —  as stated here on NASA’s website .

“Not to be a ~well, actually~ jerk, and I’m sure Bard will be impressive, but for the record: JWST did not take ‘the very first image of a planet outside our solar system,’” tweeted astrophysicist Grant Tremblay.

Bruce Macintosh, director of University of California Observatories at UC Santa Cruz, also pointed out the mistake. “Speaking as someone who imaged an exoplanet 14 years before JWST was launched, it feels like you should find a better example?” he tweeted .

In a follow-up tweet, Tremblay added: “I do love and appreciate that one of the most powerful companies on the planet is using a JWST search to advertise their LLM. Awesome! But ChatGPT etc., while spooky impressive, are often *very confidently* wrong. Will be interesting to see a future where LLMs self error check.”

As Tremblay notes, a major problem for AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard is their tendency to confidently state incorrect information as fact. The systems frequently “hallucinate” — that is, make up information — because they are essentially autocomplete systems.

Rather than querying a database of proven facts to answer questions, they are trained on huge corpora of text and analyze patterns to determine which word follows the next in any given sentence. In other words, they are probabilistic, not deterministic — a trait that has led one prominent AI professor to label them “bullshit generators.”

Of course, the internet is already full of false and misleading information, but the issue is compounded by Microsoft and Google’s desire to use these tools as search engines. There, the chatbots’ answers take on the authority of a would-be all-knowing machine.

Microsoft, which demoed its new AI-powered Bing search engine yesterday , has tried to preempt these issues by placing liability on the user. “Bing is powered by AI, so surprises and mistakes are possible,” says the company’s disclaimer. “Make sure to check the facts, and share feedback so we can learn and improve!”

A spokesperson for Google, Jane Park, gave The Verge this statement: “This highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something that we’re kicking off this week with our Trusted Tester program. We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.”

One question that came to mind was whether Google Bard could make a Google Slides presentation? As a text-based chatbot, like ChatGPT the answer is no but it can help you out by offering prompts and text ideas. With the announcement of Duet AI ‘s integration into Google workspace you will be a able to create a Google Slides presentation with Duet AI.

This AI integration Google is implementing is similar to what their rivals at Microsoft Copilot are doing with AI in Microsoft office.

Users will soon be able to leverage Duet AI technology to create dynamic presentations with Google Slides. As Google has promised to launch this feature later this year.

Google Slides gets a boost with Duet AI features in Workspace

Duet AI is an artificial intelligence technology introduced by Google for its Google Workspace. It will allow users to draft emails or documents in Gmail and Docs by providing brief text prompts.

Do not forget these new generative AI features are expected to roll out to Workspace users later this year through the Duet AI service.

A Google Slides example was performed to highlight the new generative AI features being developed for Workspace during Google’s keynote speech.

They applied a poem on a slide about the parents’ favorite food as a starting point for creating images. Multiple alternatives for visuals based on the poem were generated behind the scenes using Google’s text-to-image models. The presenter was able to choose and refine the images until they found a suitable fit for the presentation.

This is an incredibly exiting addition to Google Workspace and will surely save tons of time for those who use Workspace in their work.

Creating a Google Slides presentation with Google Bard

While you cannot directly create a Slides presentation with Google Bard, you can utilize the chatbot to create prompts or text for your slides. This way you can make the task of creating a presentation far more streamlined. Google Bard is not however capable of creating the Slides presentation itself, for that you’l have to look forward to Duet AI’s integration into Google Slides.

Google has already integrated PaLM 2, a powerful language model, into Bard, which is expected to be introduced onto Google Chrome in the coming weeks.

Bard is currently limited to 180 countries and territories, excluding Canada and all 27 member states of the European Union.

What is Google Bard?

Google Bard is Google very own conversational AI chatbot developed by Google AI. The Large Language Model software has been trained upon a vast amount of data in order for it to be able to create human like responses in much the same way as OpenAI ‘s ChatGPT.

What is Google Slides?

A part of the Google Workspace productivity suite, Google Slides is a cloud-based presentation tool. Users can collaborate in real-time while creating and editing presentations online.

Did the Market Overreact to Google's Bard AI Presentation? In an attempt to counter Microsoft Inc. (NASDAQ: MSFT) presentation of the integration of OpenAI ChatGPT with its applications, search engine giant Alphabet

In an attempt to counter Microsoft Inc. (NASDAQ: MSFT) presentation of the integration of OpenAI ChatGPT with its applications, search engine giant Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) owned Google hastily unveiled their Bard AI chatbot. The market gave its verdict when MSFT stock climbed while GOOGL stock plummeted.

Investors ponder where the dramatical sell-off in GOOGL shares may be an overreaction. The contrast between the presentations was night and day. While Microsoft may have gotten the lead in the AI wars , analysts have said that Google has the edge with 90% of searches. It has the most robust data needed to power and improves AI technology.

Microsoft's Event

Microsoft held an event on Feb. 7, 2023, showcasing the integration of OpenAI ChatGPT into its Bing search engine and Edge browser. Microsoft provided demonstrations of the added value AI brings to searches and browsing. One demonstration showed Bing could pull a 16-page earnings report for the Gap, Inc. (NYSE: GPS) .

It then asked the AI to point out the key takeaways from the report, which it performed by posting bullet points.

It was an enhanced version of ChatGPT, as the current free version doesn't provide specific financial data. When asked about the latest GPS earnings report, it responded, "I'm sorry, but I don't have information on the latest earnings report for GPS. It's important to note that my training data only goes up until 2021, and I do not have real-time information on financial data such as earnings reports."

Google's Hasty Retort

On Feb. 8, 2023, Google gave a live presentation from Paris, France, revealing its own AI chatbot, Bard. Google described its AI conversation technology LaMDA but gave very few demonstrations of Bard at work. In an embarrassing moment, a presenter was caught off guard when trying to demonstrate Bard on a smartphone but nervously laughed, "We're missing the phone... We can't find the phone."

This set the tone for a hasty demo. They covered augmented reality with Google Maps and somehow linked it to being AI-powered during a demo of someone trying to find a coffee shop. There was very little in terms of seeing Bard AI in action, just promises of innovations.

Bard AI Advertisement Disaster

Google released an advertisement demonstrating the Bard chatbot hours before the live Paris event. The ad shows Bard answering the question, "What new discoveries from the James Web Space Telescope (JWST) can I tell my 9 year old about?" Bard's responded with several answers. However, it's botched the last answer "JWST took the first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.

These distant worlds are called "exoplanets." Exo means "from outside" NASA confirmed this to be false, and the actual first pictures of exoplanets were taken in 2004 by the European Southern Observatory's giant telescopes. That started the stock collapse, which continued for the next two days. The reaction appears to be overdone, but a falling market will mute any bounce attempts.

Daily Cup and Handle Breakout Retracement

The daily candlestick chart on GOOGL illustrates a daily cup and handle breakout. GOOGL formed the lip line on Dec. 13, 2022, as shares fell from $99.53 to a low of $84.86 on Jan. 6, 2023. Shares formed a rounding bottom and staged a rally on the daily market structure low (MSL) buy trigger breakout through $90.22.

The lip line was retested on Jan. 23, 2022, before pulling back to $94.42, forming the handle low. GOOGL eventually broke out through the lip line on Feb. 1, 2023, with a large gap opening at $105.80 on its earnings release and anticipation of the AI event from Paris.

GOOGL shares chopped above the gap level peaking at $108.18 on the day before the event Feb. 7, 2023. GOOGL started its tumultuous collapse the following day on Feb. 8, 2023, as shares collapsed (-7.68%) to $99.37 in reaction to the botched Bard advertisement and live stream from Paris.

The selling accelerated on Feb. 9, 2023, as shares fell another (-4.29%) to close at $95.01 on a massive 120 million shares of volume. GOOGL fell a third day to hold the daily 50-period moving average (MA) at $94.28 as it closed at $94.57 on nearly 55 million shares.

The daily stochastic is falling to the 40-band as volume starts to fall. Pullback support levels are at $91.61, $90.22 daily MSL, $87.44, $85.83, and $84.86 swing low.

During the recently held Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California, “Generative AI” got the maximum attention. Bard, a rival of Microsoft-backed ChatGPT AI chatbot, received special attention as Google seeks to make up for lost ground in Artificial Intelligence technology.

Google ’s Bard, just like ChatGPT, can understand and generate human-like responses. With Bard now available to users in more than 180 countries worldwide, including India, Google is ready to show a new way of how we search the web in future.

If you have never heard about Bard, here’s how to use the AI Chatbot and what to use it for.

What is Bard?

Bard is basically an AI Chatbot developed by Google. It is based on Google’s Large language model (LLM), LaMDA, similar to how ChatGPT is based on GPT. These are types of neural networks that mimic the underlying architecture of the brain in the form of a computer. Bard is separate from Google Search, which is the default way how billions of people look for information on the web. Unlike how a traditional search works, Bard is conversational and allows users to write a prompt and receive human-like text and images generated by artificial intelligence.

In its own description, Bard is a “large language model, also known as a conversational AI or chatbot trained to be informative and comprehensive”. “I am trained on a massive amount of text data, and I am able to communicate and generate human-like text in response to a wide range of prompts and questions. For example, I can provide summaries of factual topics or create stories.”

Is Bard free?

Bard is free to use, as of now. Google’s Bard was initially available to those in the US and the UK who signed up for a waitlist but has since been expanded to those in 180 countries. Google is encouraging users to use Bard and give feedback so that the company can further improve the AI chatbot.

How do you use Bard?

Getting started with Bard is straightforward. To use Bard, you need to visit the Bard homepage by going to Bard.google.com and logging in using your Google account. From there, you will get access to use Bard and its AI interface. Bard AI is simple and easy to use, just like any Google product.

Google Bard chat window is easy to navigate. There is a Text area where you enter your questions or prompts at the bottom of the screen and hit enter or click submit on the right to send them. Google also lets you dictate your prompts by clicking the microphone button within the text area.

Once you enter written prompts, Bard will converse with you, just like humans interact. The entire conversation will appear at the centre of the chat window. After the AI chatbot responds to the query, you can view other drafts of each response alongside the ability to give thumbs up or down to provide feedback. Google also allows you to edit your prompts.

There is an edit button next to the prompt in the chat window that gives you the option to edit your prompt and tweak it to get a new answer. The edit option is helpful because the better you frame your query, the better the AI chatbot understands and tries to respond to your query more precisely. Towards the left side of the text area, you will notice the option to Reset chat, Bard activity, FAQ, Updates and Help and Support.

Does Bard save your conversations?

Google Bard doesn’t save your entire conversations each time you interact with the AI chatbot but it does save prompts and questions you ask. Given the kind of data collection Google does, we strongly recommend not feeding your private information to Bard.

Can I use Bard in my native language?

Google says Bard can generate answers only in the English language. In addition to English, Bard also supports Japanese and Korean languages. The expansion of language support beyond English is part of a 40-language expansion plan.

Can I rely on Bard for the information I want?

No. Bard is still in the experimental stages, and the accuracy of the AI Chatbot could be flawed. Whether it is Bard or ChatGPT, the models they are built on are not fully updated with real-time information, which leads to factual inaccuracies. Generative AI chatbots don’t have a clear sense of how to differentiate between fact and fiction. This can lead to the spreading of misinformation on social media.

We asked Bard if it can be trusted. Here’s what the AI chatbot said:

“If you are looking for factual information, I can be a valuable resource. I can access and process information from the real world through Google Search and keep my response consistent with search results. However, I am still under development, and I can sometimes make mistakes. It is important to be aware of this and to always double-check the information I provide.”

What are the interesting use cases of Bard?

Users can use Bard in a variety of ways. It can provide information, write code, translate languages, write CVs, help prepare for a job interview, and much more. For example, we asked Bard how to make aloe vera juice at home, and after a few seconds, a recipe complete with instructions appeared on our screen.

When we asked Google the same question, no recipe for making aloe vera juice appeared in the results. In fact, every time we asked Google for a recipe suggestion, the search results had links to different websites. But Bard really shined in its ability to come up with the solution directly as it simplifies the process of fetching the information exactly how we intended it to be.

Search functions in a different way where Google displays a list of websites that may or may not offer the information you want. Because of that, you often have to keep scrolling through the pages with no luck in getting the exact information you want. The ability of AI chatbots to have a conversational ability does make them smarter than conventional search, though they are not always accurate.

We’re starting to open access to Bard, an early experiment that lets you collaborate with generative AI. We're beginning with the U.S. and the U.K., and will expand to more countries and languages over time.

Today we’re starting to open access to Bard , an early experiment that lets you collaborate with generative AI. This follows our announcements from last week as we continue to bring helpful AI experiences to people, businesses and communities.

You can use Bard to boost your productivity, accelerate your ideas and fuel your curiosity. You might ask Bard to give you tips to reach your goal of reading more books this year, explain quantum physics in simple terms or spark your creativity by outlining a blog post. We’ve learned a lot so far by testing Bard, and the next critical step in improving it is to get feedback from more people.

Bard can help you brainstorm some ways to read more books this year.

Bard is powered by a research large language model (LLM), specifically a lightweight and optimized version of LaMDA , and will be updated with newer, more capable models over time. It’s grounded in Google's understanding of quality information. You can think of an LLM as a prediction engine. When given a prompt, it generates a response by selecting, one word at a time, from words that are likely to come next. Picking the most probable choice every time wouldn’t lead to very creative responses, so there’s some flexibility factored in. We continue to see that the more people use them, the better LLMs get at predicting what responses might be helpful.

While LLMs are an exciting technology, they’re not without their faults. For instance, because they learn from a wide range of information that reflects real-world biases and stereotypes, those sometimes show up in their outputs. And they can provide inaccurate, misleading or false information while presenting it confidently. For example, when asked to share a couple suggestions for easy indoor plants, Bard convincingly presented ideas…but it got some things wrong, like the scientific name for the ZZ plant.

In this response, Bard got some things wrong, like the scientific name for the ZZ plant — actually Zamioculcas zamiifolia, not Zamioculcas zamioculcas.

Although it’s important to be aware of challenges like these, there are still incredible benefits to LLMs, like jumpstarting human productivity, creativity and curiosity. And so, when using Bard, you'll often get the choice of a few different drafts of its response so you can pick the best starting point for you. You can continue to collaborate with Bard from there, asking follow-up questions. And if you want to see an alternative, you can always have Bard try again.

Bard is a direct interface to an LLM, and we think of it as a complementary experience to Google Search. Bard is designed so that you can easily visit Search to check its responses or explore sources across the web. Click “Google it" to see suggestions for queries, and Search will open in a new tab so you can find relevant results and dig deeper. We’ll also be thoughtfully integrating LLMs into Search in a deeper way — more to come.

Our work on Bard is guided by our AI Principles , and we continue to focus on quality and safety . We’re using human feedback and evaluation to improve our systems, and we’ve also built in guardrails, like capping the number of exchanges in a dialogue, to try to keep interactions helpful and on topic.

• At Google I/O, Gemini Really Wants to Talk With You

Gemini is getting an upgrade to being more conversational and having greater app integration.

Google Gemini , the search giant's competitor to ChatGPT , is getting a major upgrade allowing it to be more conversational, along with increased cross-app compatibility and greater intelligence overall, the company said at its annual Google I/O developer's conference on Tuesday. 

Early access to Gemini 1.5 Pro is coming to Gemini Advanced subscribers. Like Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini too has a subscription tier for its AI chatbot with more advanced features, costing $20 per month. Google says Gemini 1.5 Pro has the ability to analyze data, can better understand images and has a context window of 1 million tokens. 

When an AI chatbot analyzes a sentence, it breaks down and parses each word and punctuation. The more tokens an AI chatbot has, the more text it can analyze. With 1 million tokens, Gemini can parse through a 1,500-page document with 30,000 lines of text. Google says it'll double the context window to 2 million tokens later this year.

Gemini Live is a new conversational experience coming to Gemini Advanced subscribers. Gemini Live will allow Advanced subscribers to talk to Gemini directly via the mobile app on iOS and Android. It uses advanced speech models allowing you to converse with Gemini more naturally. For example, you can interrupt Gemini mid-conversation and it'll adapt, changing its speech patterns. Later, Google plans to release an update allowing you to use your camera to have Gemini respond to your surroundings in real time.

Google's large feature rollout for Gemini comes as OpenAI continues to dazzle with more advanced and sci-fi-esque features. Yesterday, OpenAI revealed a new version of its AI engine called GPT-4o . Like Gemini 1.5 Pro, GPT-4o can also be interrupted mid-sentence to create a more natural-sounding experience. Unlike Gemini 1.5 Pro, GPT-4o is available to both free and paid subscribers, although the paid version has five times greater capacity. 

Today's Gemini announcements gives Google the opportunity to reset the conversation around its AI chatbot, which has been plagued with snafus since launch. Early on, Gemini, then named Bard, got a key piece of information wrong in its initial presentation, leading to a plummeting stock price. Earlier this year, Google had to disable the image generation in Gemini after it began depicting historical figures, like the pope or German Nazis, as women or people of color. 

As Big Tech and Wall Street rally around AI, with players like Meta , Nvidia and Microsoft seeing record stock prices, those who bring the best AI products to market will see the greatest valuations.

Gemini will also see deeper integration into Google's suite of apps like Gmail, Maps and YouTube Music. Google says Gemini Advanced users will be able to create more complex trip itineraries in the coming months, taking into account the travel time between sights along with restaurant and museum recommendations. Gemini will later see integrations with Calendar, its Tasks management app and its Keep notes app. YouTube Music integration rolls out today. 

Like ChatGPT's custom GPTs, Google too is allowing you to create customized versions of Gemini called Gems. You can tell Gemini to create a personalized training coach to or a patient math tutor and it'll oblige.

Lost in the AI Jargon: Google's Big Event Was Clear as Mud

I n almost 13 years of being a technology journalist, I've never felt so overwhelmed by information as I have after sitting through Google's 2024 I/O keynote  on Tuesday. From Gemini, Gemma, Gem, Veo, Astra and Learn LM, Google threw a lot of stuff out there, and I'm sure I can't be the only one whose head is spinning. 

And if I -- someone who's tried hard to remain at the cutting edge of tech reporting -- am struggling to fully comprehend what just happened, then it doesn't bode well for the casual observers among you who are arriving at the announcements, fresh-faced and rosy-cheeked hoping to simply find out how Google's AI is going to help you become a better person. 

I'm not going to break the information down here. CNET has a talented team of expert writers who are already in the process of doing just that. But I do think it's something Google needs to address as it moves further forward into becoming an AI-first behemoth. 

Google I/O is fundamentally an event for developers. It's for coders, researchers and app creators, most of whom will already be familiar with terms like "tokens" and "large language models." So in some ways, the cacophony of information and technical terminology broadcast Tuesday is to be expected. 

But Google also needs to court consumers. It needs to get everyday users, like me and you, excited about its products potential and help us understand precisely how they'll fit into our lives. I might be a technology journalist, but I'm also an everyday tech fan. I'm a phone user, both Android and iOS . I use Gmail, Google Drive, Docs and Maps. I'm also a photographer and a YouTube channel host . Almost all of today's announcements are in some way relevant to one part of my life or another, and yet I'm struggling to even grasp what they are, let alone what they do. 

Is Project Astra the same as Gemini ? Or Gemma? Are all of them tied into Learn LM or is that something else? Does this replace Google Assistant? Right now, I honestly don't know, and a large part of my job is to understand all of this stuff and break it down to you. So I will be spending many of my upcoming hours reading my colleagues' writing on exactly this and if you're interested in Google's AI efforts then I encourage you to do the same. 

But I don't like having to do deep reading just to understand the basics. I'm a firm believer in never reading a product manual, and if you have to, then that product has failed in its usability. This is very much how I feel about today's keynote.

Honestly, I can't put all the blame on Google. The arrival and evolution of AI -- in particular generative AI -- has been so rapid that I already found myself feeling somewhat out of place. Last year, Google was talking about Bard. But, oh no, it's not Bard now, it's Gemini -- come on, keep up. It's similar to how I felt when terms like "blockchain" first started being used and, to be totally truthful, I still can't tell you what the blockchain is. 

We've got ChatGPT, Samsung's Galaxy AI, Meta AI, plus the arrival of new AI-based devices like Rabbit R1 and the Humane AI Pin . There's so much AI going on and there seems to be little consensus on how exactly the term AI is applied. The result is a real feeling of fragmentation and confusion. I'm often asked by friends and family about AI, about which chatbot they should use (if at all) and how to create generative AI images. And beyond pointing them to CNET's helpful AI Atlas , I struggle to give meaningful answers. 

Google, like all tech companies, needs us, the consumers, to understand this stuff. They need us to know what these AI tools are and how transformative they can be if they want us to be excited by them. And if we're excited by them then, maybe, we'll buy them. Maybe we'll opt for the next Pixel phone because of Gemini and its arguably quite compelling video question service. 

But a straight two-hour presentation that leaves even experienced tech reporters scratching their heads and struggling to make sense of it isn't the way to do it. Google spent a long time talking about how great its AI is at summarizing things. Maybe it's time that it used those tools itself.
