We've all been to a presentation where the speaker bores you to death with a mundane PowerPoint presentation. Actually, the speaker could have kept you much more engaged by adding some interactive features to their slideshow. Let's look into some of these options.

1. Add a QR code

Adding a QR code can be particularly useful if you want to direct your audience to an online form, website, or video.

Some websites have in-built ways to create a QR code. For example, on Microsoft Forms , when you click "Collect Responses," you'll see the QR code option via the icon highlighted in the screenshot below. You can either right-click the QR code to copy and paste it into your presentation, or click "Download" to add it to your device gallery to insert the QR code as a picture.

In fact, you can easily add a QR code to take your viewer to any website. On Microsoft Edge, right-click anywhere on a web page where there isn't already a link, and left-click "Create QR Code For This Page."

You can also create QR codes in other browsers, such as Chrome.

You can then copy or download the QR code to use wherever you like in your presentation.

2. Embed Microsoft Forms (Education or Business Only)

If you plan to send your PPT presentation to others—for example, if you're a trainer sending step-by-step instruction presentation, a teacher sending an independent learning task to your students, or a campaigner for your local councilor sending a persuasive PPT to constituents—you might want to embed a quiz, questionnaire, pole, or feedback survey in your presentation.

In PowerPoint, open the "Insert" tab on the ribbon, and in the Forms group, click "Forms". If you cannot see this option, you can add new buttons to the ribbon .

As at April 2024, this feature is only available for those using their work or school account. We're using a Microsoft 365 Personal account in the screenshot below, which is why the Forms icon is grayed out.

Then, a sidebar will appear on the right-hand side of your screen, where you can either choose a form you have already created or opt to craft a new form.

Now, you can share your PPT presentation with others , who can click the fields and submit their responses when they view the presentation.

3. Embed a Live Web Page

You could always screenshot a web page and paste that into your PPT, but that's not a very interactive addition to your presentation. Instead, you can embed a live web page into your PPT so that people with access to your presentation can interact actively with its contents.

To do this, we will need to add an add-in to our PPT account .

Add-ins are not always reliable or secure. Before installing an add-in to your Microsoft account, check that the author is a reputable company, and type the add-in's name into a search engine to read reviews and other users' experiences.

To embed a web page, add the Web Viewer add-in ( this is an add-in created by Microsoft ).

Go to the relevant slide and open the Web Viewer add-in. Then, copy and paste the secure URL into the field box, and remove https:// from the start of the address. In our example, we will add a selector wheel to our slide. Click "Preview" to see a sample of the web page's appearance in your presentation.

This is how ours will look.

When you or someone with access to your presentation views the slideshow, this web page will be live and interactive.

4. Add Links and Menus

As well as moving from one slide to the next through a keyboard action or mouse click, you can create links within your presentation to direct the audience to specific locations.

To create a link, right-click the outline of the clickable object, and click "Link."

In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click "Place In This Document," choose the landing destination, and click "OK."

What's more, to make it clear that an object is clickable, you can use action buttons. Open the "Insert" tab on the ribbon, click "Shape," and then choose an appropriate action button. Usefully, PPT will automatically prompt you to add a link to these shapes.

You might also want a menu that displays on every slide. Once you have created the menu, add the links using the method outlined above. Then, select all the items, press Ctrl+C (copy), and then use Ctrl+V to paste them in your other slides.

5. Add Clickable Images to Give More Info

Through PowerPoint's animations, you can give your viewer the power to choose what they see and when they see it. This works nicely whether you're planning to send your presentation to others to run through independently or whether you're presenting in front of a group and want your audience to decide which action they want to take.

Start by creating the objects that will be clickable (trigger) and the items that will appear (pop-up).

Then, select all the pop-ups together. When you click "Animations" on the ribbon and choose an appropriate animation for the effect you want to achieve, this will be applied to all objects you have selected.

The next step is to rename the triggers in your presentation. To do this, open the "Home" tab, and in the Editing group, click "Select", and then "Selection Pane."

With the Selection Pane open, select each trigger on your slide individually, and rename them in the Selection Pane, so that they can be easily linked to in the next step.

Finally, go back to the first pop-up. Open the "Animations" tab, and in the Advanced Animation group, click the "Trigger" drop-down arrow. Then, you can set the item to appear when a trigger is clicked in your presentation.

If you want your item to disappear when the trigger is clicked again, select the pop-up, click "Add Animation" in the Advanced Animation group, choose an Exit animation, and follow the same step to link that animation to the trigger button.

6. Add a Countdown Timer

A great way to get your audience to engage with your PPT presentation is to keep them on edge by adding a countdown timer. Whether you're leading a presentation and want to let your audience stop to discuss a topic, or running an online quiz with time-limit questions, having a countdown timer means your audience will keep their eye on your slide throughout.

To do this, you need to animate text boxes or shapes containing your countdown numbers. Choose and format a shape and type the highest number that your countdown clock will need. In our case, we're creating a 10-second timer.

Now, with your shape selected, open the "Animations" tab on the ribbon and click the animation drop-down arrow. Then, in the Exit menu, click "Disappear."

Open the Animation Pane, and click the drop-down arrow next to the animation you've just added. From there, choose "Timing."

Make sure "On Click" is selected in the Start menu, and change the Delay option to "1 second," before clicking "OK."

Then, with this shape still selected, press Ctrl+C (copy), and then Ctrl+V (paste). In the second box, type 9 . With the Animation Pane still open and this second shape selected, click the drop-down arrow and choose "Timing" again. Change the Start option to "After Previous," and make sure the Delay option is 1 second. Then, click "OK."

We can now use this second shape as our template, as when we copy and paste it again, the animations will also duplicate. With this second shape selected, press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, type 8 into the box, and continue to do the same until you get to 0 .

Next, remove the animations from the "0" box, as you don't want this to disappear. To do this, click the shape, and in the Animation Pane drop-down, click "Remove."

You now need to layer them in order. Right-click the box containing number 1, and click "Bring To Front." You will now see that box on the top. Do the same with the other numbers in ascending order.

Finally, you need to align the objects together. Click anywhere on your slide and press Ctrl+A. Then, in the Home tab on the ribbon, click "Arrange." First click "Align Center," and then bring the menu up again, so that you can click "Align Middle."

Press Ctrl+A again to select your timer, and you can then move your timer or copy and paste it elsewhere.

Press F5 to see the presentation in action, and when you get to the slide containing the timer, click anywhere on the slide to see your countdown timer in action!

OpenAI’s GPT-4o Model Gives ChatGPT a Snappy, Flirty Upgrade

Since it launched in late 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has generally fended off suggestions that it has emotions or desires by responding that it’s just an artificial intelligence model. Upgrades announced by OpenAI Monday showed the company apparently trying to make the chatbot act more like a human.

In demos, the new version of ChatGPT was capable of rapid-fire, natural voice conversations, picked up on emotional cues, and displayed simulated emotional reactions of its own.

During a livestream from the company’s headquarters in San Francisco on Monday, Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer, announced that ChatGPT will be powered by a new, more powerful AI model called GPT-4o. The model will be available to both free and paid users of ChatGPT via a new desktop app as well as the existing mobile app and web version.

Murati said the GPT-4o model allows ChatGPT to respond more rapidly to voice, image, and video input than OpenAI’s previous technology. In demos, she and other OpenAI employees had fast-flowing conversations with ChatGPT, which answered using a liveley and expressive female-sounding voice and nimbly kept up when interrupted.

ChatGPT adopted different emotional tones during the conversation and at times responded as if it were experiencing feelings of its own. When an OpenAI employee said he had been talking about how “useful and amazing” the chatbot is, it responded flirtatiously, gushing “Oh stop it, you’re making me blush.”

“This just feels so magical, and that’s wonderful,” Murati said, adding, “over the next few weeks we’ll be rolling out these capabilities to everyone.”

At another point in the demo, ChatGPT responded to OpenAI researcher Barret Zoph’s greeting by asking, “How can I brighten your day today?” When Zoph asked the chatbot to look at a selfie of him and say what emotions he was showing, ChatGPT responded, “I’ll put my emotional detective hat on” and warmly said, “It looks like you’re feeling pretty happy and cheerful … whatever’s going on, it looks like you’re in a great mood.”

In a blog post Monday, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, highlighted the significance of the new interface. “It feels like AI from the movies; and it’s still a bit surprising to me that it’s real,” Altman wrote. “Getting to human-level response times and expressiveness turns out to be a big change.”

OpenAI’s tweaks may make ChatGPT more engaging and popular, but they may also change the way users think about the program.

ChatGPT became a sensation last year thanks to its remarkable ability to answer questions and generate text with what often resembles humanlike understanding. But OpenAI and leading competitors such as Google have so far generally sought to limit the anthropomorphism of their chatbots, by refusing to answer certain types of questions and having models remind users that they are mere computer programs.

Despite that caution, the sometimes lifelike repartee of the latest chatbots can tap into users’ emotions. Some companies have adapted the technology to maximize this phenomenon, offering AI companions that role-play different human emotions or are offered as AI girlfriends and boyfriends . Some AI researchers have warned that the long-term implications of deploying programs that mimic and respond to emotions could be unwelcome.

A team at Google DeepMind last month released a research paper exploring the ethical risks that may arise as AI assistants become more capable. Among other things, the researchers warn that such assistants could become highly persuasive and addictive. Last year, a British man pleaded guilty to breaching security at Windsor Castle , saying that a chatbot he had exchanged more than 5,000 messages with had encouraged him to do so.

In addition to snappier conversational skills, OpenAI says its GPT-4o model makes ChatGPT better able to make sense of images, including photos and charts, and can store more information about a user in its “memory” to provide a more personalized experience.

OpenAI says it will make GPT-4o available to users of the free version of ChatGPT, essentially upgrading all users to its most capable AI model.

Google is expected to unveil new AI technologies of its own at the search company’s I/O developer conference starting Tuesday. Competition between companies working on AI seems unlikely to cool down. At the end of today’s OpenAI event, Murati promised that the company would soon be offering more announcements, “on our progress towards the next big thing.”

The Google I/O 2024 keynote is over, and if you're interested in new ways Google can inject AI into its products, you probably think you want to see it if you missed it. Really, you don't.

The cool new features and products are there. The problem is they are buried under the most boring and technical I/O keynote presentation ever. Unless you're a developer who uses Google products and the Google ecosystem, it just wasn't for you.

Normally, I would be the first to point out that Google I/O is a developer conference that is meant for developers to learn about development. This is true, and if you fit this description, you should find a way to experience it at least once. On that front, Google I/O is amazing.

But this was the keynote presentation. The part of the week that is supposed to get the "average Joe and Jane" excited about the future so that they want to use the cool new products developers can make using all the new stuff.

Combine that with the fact that a large number of people attending are there as press or influencers, and it makes the whole thing look really weird this time. Members of the tech press are there to tell you about cool new phones and how Google is making things better, not explain the differences between Gemini 7b and Gemini 2b.

If you slogged through it, you did see some cool, even futuristic stuff. Privacy concerns aside, Google can now integrate into your life in ways it couldn't before and even be useful. An example is Google's Project Astra remembering where a pair of glasses were sitting. The days of a lost remote control are over once this goes live.

For every good example, though, we heard a word salad of things that "normal" people just don't care about. Telling developers about multimodal inputs or that they have access to two million tokens is fine. Telling everyone about it is silly because almost nobody cares, or most might not even understand what it means.

But even I stopped being interested about 20 minutes into the program.

The show started right, with Pichai telling people how Google has spent billions of dollars and over 10 years working on AI and its infrastructure. Google is competing with companies like OpenAI and should remind us that Google has a huge advantage when it comes to experience and scale. It's how Google will "win" the AI race once all the dust settles.

It also ended right. Knowing about how Google is managing the risks that come with AI and what its principles are . That's more important than the products themselves and Google has to lead by example because it is about to dump AI on everyone who uses Google Search.

Everything in between was developer-focused. I know I know, developer conference, but the keynote is also supposed to get everyone excited about what's coming. Google helped create this situation where a developer conference has morphed into a press event. Abandoning the idea seems short-sighted.

That isn't going to happen, and you're going to have to wait to see how any of this stuff matters when it comes to you.

GPT-4o vs. Google Gemini: Who won this week’s AI war?

I knew Google was planning to make big AI announcements at I/O 2024. But then, rumors spread last week that OpenAI would unveil a Google Search rival for ChatGPT . Sam Altman dispelled those reports when OpenAI announced a ChatGPT event for Monday, just one day ahead of Google’s big Gemini fest. OpenAI said it would discuss ChatGPT advancements and offer AI product demos.

Fast-forward to today and we now know everything there is to know about the AI updates that OpenAI and Google brought to the table. ChatGPT got its big GPT-4o upgrade , while Google brought variants of Gemini AI to virtually all its existing products. It also unveiled a new Project Astra AI assistant for the Gemini app that matches GPT-4o’s multimodality.

So who won? Well, it’s complicated.

Why GPT-4o won

Before I even saw Google’s new Gemini advancements, I had to appreciate how amazing the GPT-4o upgrade for ChatGPT really is . OpenAI pulled off something Google wished was possible back in December when it had to fake its first Gemini demos.

OpenAI’s GPT-4o handles voice conversations almost like a human. You can interrupt the AI when you want to adapt the conversation without losing the context. GPT-4o also supports images and videos, and it answers questions about what it can see in real-time.

Also important is the fact that GPT-4o is faster than GPT-4 when answering prompts. It’s not all about voice input, as text prompts will generally get you faster results. The new model should offer better reasoning than previous ChatGPT models.

ChatGPT also received a major privacy upgrade in the days leading up to the Monday event. Now, you can prevent your data from training the AI without losing your chat history. That’s a big deal, especially considering what the GPT-4o upgrade will make possible.

Why Google Gemini won

Gemini 1.5 Pro is Google’s best model, which can handle prompts of up to 1 million tokens. That limit will double to 2 million soon. It’s already available to users who pay for the Advanced version of Gemini. This is one area where Google seems to outperform OpenAI, though Gemini users on the free version won’t be able to take advantage of the 1 million-token limit.

Still, one of Project Astra’s mind-blowing features was its ability to retain memories of what it had just seen. For example, it remembered where the user’s glasses were when she asked about them. But again, unlike GPT-4o, this wasn’t a live demo. Google’s tech isn’t ready to be used widely right now. It’ll be a few months before it reaches the Gemini app.

The real strength of Gemini is that it’s part of a much larger ecosystem than OpenAI can offer for ChatGPT. Google adapted Gemini to work with various products, such as Gmail, Google Workspace productivity apps, and Google Search.

Which AI will I use the most?

There’s no question for me: ChatGPT will remain my primary genAI product for the foreseeable future, and I’ll rely on GPT-4o for my prompts. I’ll use it in the wild more and take advantage of voice, images, and video features.

Again, I’m saying that people likely won’t have to stick to just one generative AI product.

ChatGPT with GPT-4o and Google Gemini each promise great experiences. Some are available right now, and some will come soon. OpenAI and Google will likely try to copy each other’s AI initiatives in the coming months and years to compensate for weaknesses. But you don’t have to worry about being locked into one platform or the other, like so many people are with mobile and desktop operating systems. AI will be available across platforms, and you can use different options to meet different needs.
