Phonological Components Analysis (PCA) Packet: Aphasia Treatment
What is Phonological Components Analysis?
Developed and modeled after Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA), Phonological Components Analysis (PCA) is an evidence-based technique that aims to improve awareness of phonological properties of words and support word retrieval in PWA. First introduced by Leonard et al. (2008), PCA showed positive outcomes in 7 out of the 10 individuals studied and some generalization for untrained words. Van Hees et al. (2013) further investigated PCA by comparing it to SFA. In this study, 7 out of 8 people showed improvements for treated words with PCA and only 4 people showed improvements with SFA (Van Hees et al., 2013). Van Hees et al., 2013 suggests that individuals with semantic difficulties will likely have more success with PCA and it is expected that individuals with phonological deficits will show improvements with both treatment techniques.

Handout: Aphasia
- What is Aphasia?
Aphasia is a language disorder following neurological damage, most commonly, caused by a stroke. Depending on the site of damage, signs and symptoms of aphasia will vary. Individuals may experience difficulty understanding spoken or written language, trouble communicating daily wants and needs, or struggle with writing. Aphasia is a loss of language — not a loss of intelligence.

General Dentistry:
Our general dental services help to maintain your dental and oral health, leaving you happy with your smile. After your first consultation, when we get to know you and your dental history properly, we will create a personalised treatment programme for you based on your needs.
Preventative Dentistry:
We prevent oral diseases by carefully examining the mouth for early signs of gum disease and tooth decay. To do this effectively, our dentists and hygienists will ask you about your diet and your oral hygiene routine, as both can affect the likelihood of disease.
Paedodontics:
We want to see all children smiling confidently. Our wonderful dentists are on hand to make this happen. They give child-friendly oral care recommendations and build rapport with each child so that a trip to the dentist is enjoyable and no longer a frightening chore.
Endodontics:
Endodontics involves the treatment of dental pulp. Endodontists save diseased teeth by fighting infection though processes like root canal therapy. Our experts will first diagnose tooth pain, before performing root canal therapy or another necessary procedure on the interior of the tooth.
Restoring Teeth:
Teeth may decay or chip over time. These teeth should be restored so that they function and look the way they did before. Single teeth restorations include fillings, inlays, onlays and crowns. Whole teeth can be replaced with implants, bridges or dentures.
A filling restores a decayed tooth to its former shape and function. The filling material we use depends on the location of the affected tooth, but every filling will look completely natural.
Inlays / Onlays:
After the removal of decay, an inlay may be fitted into a tooth cavity and cemented into place. It is stronger and more durable than a filling.
An onlay is very similar to an inlay, but it also ‘hugs’ the tooth’s biting surface to prevent a filled tooth from breaking. They require less tooth filing than crowns.
Crowns, also called caps, are natural tooth-like covers that restore very broken down teeth. They can be made from ceramic, porcelain or metal, and are matched to your natural tooth colour so that they blend in with your other teeth.
A conventional bridge is a natural-looking false tooth that replaces a missing tooth and ‘bridges’ the space between two teeth. So unlike dentures, bridges are fixed and cannot be taken out of your mouth.
An adhesive bridge is the best solution when the adjacent teeth are healthy. Since it is glued to the back of the teeth, a crown does not need to be put over the entire tooth.
Bridges may reduce your risk of gum disease, help correct various bite issues and can even improve your speech.
Root canal therapy:
Our teeth contain a network of nerves and blood vessels called the pulp, located in the pulp chamber and root canal system. If a nerve dies, usually due to tooth decay, a resulting infection may cause acute pain and discomfort in this area. Sometimes a nerve dies without symptoms, only to be discovered by x-ray.
Root canal therapy disinfects this region of the mouth and fills it to prevent re-infection. This process uses state-of-the-art technology to fill the canals and to exclude bacteria from them. These techniques, combined with good local anaesthetic, will make this treatment a comfortable experience.
Tooth whitening:
Although our hygienists will remove surface stains from your teeth, you will then need tooth whitening to penetrate the structure of your teeth and increase their brightness. This is achieved by applying gel to the teeth in a custom-made tray, allowing your teeth to sparkle.
Dental veneers:
Veneers improve the shape, shade or position of your teeth. Veneers are very thin laminates of tooth-coloured porcelain, ceramic or special composite resin.
Before constructing veneers, we will help you to choose the smile you want. If the changes you need are significant, we may work with our orthodontist, Dr Heike Börnert, to align your teeth prior to the construction of veneers.

Modal title
Preventative dentistry, caries (tooth decay) prevention.
Caries, or tooth decay, is caused by bacteria, which turn sugar into acids that eat away at the tooth enamel. Preventative measures include lowering your sugar intake and brushing with fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your teeth and remove bacteria.
Restoring Teeth
Teeth may decay or chip over time. These teeth should be restored so that they function and appear as they did before. The techniques and materials needed to achieve this will vary from individual to individual.
Tooth whitening
Although our hygienists will remove surface stains from your teeth, you will then need tooth whitening to penetrate the structure of your teeth and increase their brightness. This is achieved by applying gel to the teeth in a custom-made tray, the result being teeth that sparkle.
Implant planning
We have built a worldwide reputation for our dental implant services, led by Vladimir Nikitin and George Paolinelis. Dental implants can replace any number of teeth, from a single tooth to a complete set. Patients like them because they are comfortable, stable and allow for easy chewing.
Implant placement
Dental implants enable the restoration of a single tooth or more. The main purpose of implant-supported restoration is to recover the maximum functions and aesthetics of the tooth. It also helps in the reinforcement of complete dental treatments.
Implant restoration
Implant restoration is procedures which provides the support and maintenance of the dental prosthesis. Restoration of a crown or dentures ensures the smile of the patient is easily restored.
Bone grafting
Bone grafting is a kind of cosmetic surgery which helps to strengthen the jaw bone. This results in improved support for dental implantation.
Peri-Implantitis
This is an intemperate process that affects the hard and soft tissues that surround the implant. The symptoms of this disease are associated with bleeding on probing, loss of supporting bones and suppuration at times.
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. Whether they are made from pink acrylic (plastic) or metal, they look natural and are relatively quick to make and cost-effective.
Crowns, also called caps, are natural tooth-like covers that restore damaged teeth. They can be made from ceramic, porcelain or metal, and are matched to your natural tooth colour so that they blend in with your other teeth.
A conventional bridge is a natural-looking false tooth that replaces a missing tooth and ‘bridges’ the space between two teeth. Orthodontics for Children
The earlier your child’s first orthodontist appointment, the better their oral health will be – allowing them to have a life-long confident smile. The best age to first see an orthodontist is between six and seven years old, when their permanent teeth start to come through
Orthodontics for Adolescents
At the age of ten to twelve years children are in their mixed dentition. This growth phase, which comes before the onset of puberty, is the best time to correct the bite with a functional appliance.
Orthodontics for Adults
Adult orthodontic treatment can improve your smile and confidence, as well as the health of your teeth and gums. Although more challenging than children’s orthodontics, it is never too late to see an orthodontist. We would be delighted to help you, so please do get in touch.
Scaling and root planning
Dental scaling helps to remove the tartar, biofilm, and plaque from the surface of the tooth and beneath the gum line too. Root planning provides a complete scaling of the surface of the roots to diminish the inflammation caused in the gum tissues.
Root surface debridement
Root surface debridement is a traditional and effective way of treating the gum disease. Treatments like scaling, root planning, and gingivitis can be efficiently controlled with the help of this treatment. Further treatment can be carried out according to the response of this treatment.
Removal of plaque
Plaque is generally formed when you do not take care of your teeth properly. You can remove plaque with the help of floss and a brush. Regularly brush your teeth in circular motion. Regular dental visits twice a year is necessary for the maintenance of your oral health.
3D Cone Beam CT Scan
3D cone beam CT scan is a special kind of equipment for performing X-rays. It is particularly suited to facial x-rays, where regular dental x-rays are often inadequate. The process requires no special preparation, and the images attained with the help of cone beam CT helps to give a clearer picture for precise treatment.
Panoramic Radiograph
Panoramic radiography is a kind of dental x-ray which uses a small dosage of the ionizing radiation to acquire one single image of the whole mouth. The dentists or oral surgeons use this radiography for the treatment of braces, implants, extractions, and dentures.
Clinical Photography
Clinical photography is a specialized approach to photography that is concerned with the documentation of dental clinics, presentation of patients, medical devices, specimens from the autopsy, along with medical and surgical procedures.
Examination assessment of dentition
Dental evaluation of your teeth is necessary and can be checked via the dentist only. The assessment is done to check any dental issues persist or not. Recognizing the diseases, checking the symptoms, restoring the defects, etc., are the basic look out of the examination.
Fissure sealants
Fissure sealants are a type of dental treatment which helps in the prevention of tooth decay. Fissures are present in the back of the teeth which are very vulnerable. They easily get affected by tooth decay due to food and bacteria.
Root canal therapy
Root canal therapy disinfects this region of the mouth and fills it to prevent re-infection. This process uses state-of-the-art technology to fill the canals and to exclude bacteria from them.
Apical Surgery
Apical surgery is known to be a basic surgical procedure which is the last way for protecting and maintaining a tooth. It helps in preventing the bacterial leakage that occurs from the root-canal system to the periradicular tissues.
Tooth removal
A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth. This may be required if a tooth cannot be restored, is impacted, is causing gum problems or prior to some orthodontic treatments. Irrespective of the complexity of the extraction, we will use the least invasive procedure possible.
Cyst removal
Dentists or surgeons at times will suggest removal of the cyst via surgery. There are very rare chances of any complications during surgeries. Surgeries are required if the cyst gets opened. If it is closed then with the help of medicines the cyst can be removed.
Fraenectomy
This is an oral surgical process which helps in elimination of frenulum in the mouth. Frenulum is a muscular part which is present between two tissues, normally presented under the lip and/or tongue.
Assessment and biopsy of lesions
The oral tissue biopsy is necessary for suspicious lesions. During the time of biopsy, the dentist or oral surgeon prepares the area with the help of local anesthetic which numbs your gums. It is a quick and painless procedure.
Wisdom Teeth assessment and removal
George Paolinelis will assess your wisdom teeth clinically using radiographs. George prides himself on minimally invasive surgery, which considers the long-term health of the surrounding teeth gums and bone.
Temporomandibular joint pain assessment
Temporomandibular Joint Pain assessment or TMJ is caused due to the mandibular condyle formed in the mandibular fossa. The symptoms can either be debilitating pain or slight discomfort or some limitations in the functioning of the jaw.
