Baaghi 3 movie review: As Tiger Shroff leaps and kicks, this film can barely crawl

Baaghi 3 movie review: tiger shroff does what he is best at – gravity-defying action. it is a pity the rest of this film can’t keep pace with him..

Baaghi 3 movie review: Tiger Shroff ups the action stakes.

Director: Ahmed Khan

Cast: Tiger Shroff, Shraddha Kapoor, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Jackie Shroff

Indian fans don’t like when their heroes are at the receiving end of kicks and punches. If you are India’s foremost action star Tiger Shroff , getting beaten up can apparently make your film go from a hit to an also ran. The actor had explained the audience’s middling response to his Student of The Year 2, saying he’s seen as a one-man army and his fans couldn’t digest him being beaten up by college toughies.

Baaghi 3 seems to be a direct reaction to that thought. In the third iteration of the Baaghi franchise, Tiger is beating up anything and everything that can be broken or shredded -- men, cars, tanks, helicopters, his shirts. He bounces off buildings, treads on air; delivers triple roundhouse kicks and does devastating stuff with his hands and feet. But somewhere between him decimating helicopters and blowing up tanks, my suspension of disbelief snapped; and trust me when I say that I have been trained well by Hindi cinema.

After bringing a few bad men to their knees in the Baaghi franchise, Tiger Shroff is up against a nation, a fact the film never lets us forget. In fact, once Tiger lands up at his doorstep in Baaghi 3’s climax, the kohl-eyed warlord wonders whether he is being pummeled by the US, Russia or the Mossad.

baaghi 3 movie review

If we purely go by the scale Baaghi 3 attempts, Baaghi 4 will at least need to have an army of three-eyed aliens being kicked back into space by Tiger: The Lone Avenger. In fact, Baaghi 3 would have made sense if Tiger’s superhuman strength came from a scientist’s test tube or because he is a ‘genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist’ in his spare time.

As it is, Tiger’s wins come from the fact that director Ahmed Khan seems to have given all the thought to the action and absolutely none to other aspects of this film. The story itself is creaky with age – younger brother Ronnie (Tiger Shroff) promises to always take care of his older but more timid sibling Vikram (Riteish Deshmukh). The jumpy Vikram is compelled to become a police inspector in Agra by his brother on the promise that he will always be there to help him.

baaghi 3 movie review

Ronnie does the heavy lifting while Vikram is there to accept the medals. However, as they clean up the city, they fall foul of a local criminal IPL (Jaideep Ahlawat) who has links with an ISIS-like organization from Syria, interestingly called Jaish-e-Lashkar. Vikram is sent to extradite IPL but is kidnapped, forcing Ronnie to cut a swath through the country.

Before you jump to any conclusion, Baaghi 3 has absolutely nothing to do with geo-politics or, for that matter, common sense. There might be a nation and army pursuing Ronnnie, but they would rather be killed than shoot first. The reason why people are being kidnapped from south Asia and being sent to Syria is pulpy to the point of being hilarious. Vijay Verma’s Pakistani character gets his accent from Hyderabad for some reason.

The film’s jokes are as lame as its story. IPL stands for Inder Paheli Lamba and he likes to ask riddles; Satish Kaushik’s police commissioner is called BMC aka Bhookelal Moohpe Chatore – you get the picture.

Even the dialogues on parivaar and pyaar are atleast 30 years too old for today, as is the ham-fisted message on communal harmony. Also, it is strange how ‘India Pakistan bhai bhai’ message fits in the same film that shows extra-judicial killing and dishes out such sage one-liners – “Agar bade gunde apne liye gunde rakh sakte hain to police wale gunde kyon nahi rakh sakte?” However, I am assuming the damage would be limited because Baaghi 3 is as incompetent at this as it is at everything else.

Perhaps realizing the limitations of their film, actors offer you extra -- everybody seems to be happily hamming it up. Tiger is limited in emotional scenes, Shraddha Kapoor has little to do other than being perky before interval and tanned after it, Ritiesh’s namby-pamby act gets repetitive, and Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat are happy sleep-walking through their roles. There are a mind-numbing 140 minutes of this; thankfully Tiger is kicking and punching during most of it.

baaghi 3 movie review

Tiger Shroff does have broad shoulders. But they aren't broad enough to enhance the weight of a film as unashamedly flimsy as Baaghi 3.

Full Review | Original Score: 1/5 | Jul 13, 2020

Tiger Shroff's show all the way. He slices and dices through the opposition with the finesse of a ballet dancer. He seriously needs better scripts sometimes soon to do better justice to his enormous talent...

Unless you want to tear your hair out in frustration at the cinemas, duck this crazy cinematic missile. It's a misfire from the word go.

baaghi 3 movie review

There are ample acrobatics on display, slo-mo shots, deafening explosions and lethal punches in Baaghi 3. But none of it can rise beyond a weak script that doesn't go for the kill.

Tiger Shroff does what he is best at - gravity-defying action. It is a pity the rest of this film can't keep pace with him.

If "nuance" were the last word left on Earth, you could not apply it to Baaghi 3.

baaghi 3 movie review

Ronnie might just slide in through my window and hit me senseless. Or worse, he might hit me with Baaghi 4.

Every other actor tries to overcompensate by mugging furiously, but none of them leaves a trace. Apart from a couple of lavishly mounted action scenes, Baaghi 3 has little going for it...

[A] much-too stretched saga, despite all the hustle-bustle...

baaghi 3 movie review

Bronzed and shirtless, Tiger Shroff can outrun helicopters, tanks, men. What he can't outrun is the mediocrity of this film.

baaghi 3 movie review

The Baaghi franchise, on its part, has never given anyone a semblance of a reason to expect rationale from its existence, so it's commitment to dumbfoolery comes as no surprise. But Baaghi 3 doesn't even bring in the action.

'Baaghi 3' movie review: The Tiger Shroff-starrer has stellar action but defies logic

There is a new genre in Indian cinema called "leave-your-brains-at-home action", courtesy a few recent films. And 'Baaghi 3' seems to be its latest offering. RIP logic. Watch 'Baaghi 3' for some inexplicable action, daring stunts, and only if you are a die-hard Tiger Shroff fan.

Shalu Singh

Baaghi 3 disappoints and keeps you disappointing till you walk out of the hall.

  • Movie Name: Baaghi 3
  • Critics Rating: 2 / 5
  • Release Date: March 6, 2020
  • Director: Ahmed Khan
  • Genre: Action-drama

Slo-mo walks are cool; unrealistic action sequences are engaging; acting being the least important thing in the film is also fine -- but not at the cost of story. Especially when the setting of the film reminds you of entertaining 'Tiger Zinda Hai', starring Salman Khan. I felt violated after watching 'Baaghi 3'. And if you have watched its trailer, you exactly know what to expect, and you kinda know what I am talking about.

So there is a muscle-flexing hero, a cute heroine, some impressive actors - 'kyunki acting ki poori zimmedari unpe hi dalni hai' , a bit of drama and emotion, an item song because ' thoda sex appeal bhi chahiye' . So what's left -- the story? But who cares?

Tiger pulls off insane stunts -- mostly unbelievable. Our hero single-handedly takes on Jaish-e-Lashkar (the name is an amalgamation of terrorist organisations Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Voila!) by dodging thousands of bullets and landmines, sliding through under military tanks and fighting his gritty battle on the top of a flying helicopter. There are enough heavy-duty action sequences but none of them keeps you hooked.

Talking of our heroine -- she is so carefree that she storms into men's washroom and strolls in the middle of the road in search of network. Vodafone hai kya, didi? Riteish Deshmukh plays Ronny's bada bhai, Vikram Chandra Chaturvedi. He is that one man who can't take violence and cries even at the sight of it. He is timid and Ronny makes all his decision -- be it going in police or getting married.

I wore a singular expression throughout 'Baaghi 3' -- no matter what they showed. Whether someone is dying, crying or dancing at the wedding, I couldn't help bring any expression to my face.

There is a villain 'IPL' (another googly. Voila again!) played by supremely talented 'Raazi'-fame Jaideep Ahalawat who likes throwing riddles. He spouts dialogues like 'Kaun si maa hai jo ghoom ke wapas aati hai?"

There is a scene in which Shraddha gives CPR to Tiger, who is grievously injured -- with an iron rod stuck inside his stomach. Are you kidding me?

One more thing which left me baffled was Vijay Varma's character, who was Pakistani but with a Hyderabadi accent. Kuchh bhi. Also, I would like to know from Tiger's constume designer -- what was that loose piece of cloth hanging around his neck?

For me, 'Baaghi 2' was unexpectedly good. You wanted to watch it till the end. But that's not the case in the third installment.

A few good things in 'Baaghi 3' are -- Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma (HOD of 'Baaghi 3's acting department), and Riteish's comic timing. Also, I would like to thank makers for showing at least one man who is vulnerable (Riteish, who cries at the drop of the hat), and some Hindustani-Pakistani bhaichara bit at the end.

'Baaghi 3' movie review: Packed with action and no logic

'Baaghi 3' is the third installment of the action-thriller franchise 'Baaghi'. (Youtube Screen-grab)

Remember the viral ‘peeche toh dekho’ kid from Pakistan? In the world of Baaghi 3, that kid has now grown up, immigrated to Syria, lost his specs and turned excessively lean. Played by Vijay Varma, he runs petty street scams, hiding under a beanie and long hair. Perhaps he’s had enough, I thought, vexed by memes and a toxic social media culture. He admits as much to Ronnie (Tiger Shroff) and Siya (Shraddha Kapoor), instructing them to follow him in real-life and not on TikTok or Instagram. “Peeche dekho (look back),” he says again, only this time it doesn’t sound as endearing. He’s instead telling them to watch out for cops.

baaghi 3 movie review

There are more dark layers to Ahmed Khan’s action epic. After a short intro, the film flips into prologue. We see Ronnie as a kid, roughing up bullies for hurting his elder brother Vikram. When they return home, Ronnie is brutally whipped by their father. The dad here is played by Jackie Shroff, in a bit of meta-fan servicing gone awfully wrong. When the kids grow up to be a mismatched set – one roguish, the other shy – it’s like the two halves of Tiger’s personality manifesting in separate beings.

Here I quit the psychoanalyzing to talk about the guns and tanks. Grown-up Vikram (Riteish Deshmukh) is a cop in Agra. Inept at fighting crime, he counts on Ronnie secretly subbing on his behalf. Ronnie is part Green Arrow and part Flash – who also wields a hammer and a shield. The action set pieces are large but repetitive. The opening fight is restaged kick for kick in the climax. There are two identical shots of Tiger swinging from a chain. There’s little invention, and not a whiff of logic.

Ronnie crashes unscathed from a chopper to a roof, the setting of an empty field magically replaced by an enemy hideout. It gets incredibly tedious, despite the smaller, stealthier sequences along the way. Screenwriter Farhad Samji, for all his tireless punning, keeps the motivations firmly personal. Siya’s phone cover as the words ‘Haan Bol’ (Say Yes) written on it. This is perhaps Shraddha’s mantra every time a franchise project comes her way. Tiger as usual operates in two modes: he’s either beating people up or blubbing inconsolably.

Baaghi 3 Movie Review

It is a dull film

star1.png

‘Baaghi’ movies are churned out at two year intervals, so you could be forgiven for thinking, having lapsed into a deja vu zone, that you had seen this one before. This is brand new, a film in which Tiger Shroff takes on the entire war torn nation of Syria; insurgencies and all. And it’s on a different level, because here Tiger goes from being an athletic muscleman to a Superhero.

Ronnie (Tiger Shroff) is ‘Superman’ and his human avatar, his ‘Clark Kent’, is his older brother, the diffident Vikram (Riteish Deshmukh), a timid police officer in Agra. In the previous films, especially in the first ‘Baaghi’, the action was in the realm of possibility, even though located in the kingdom of unlikelihood.

In this movie, Ronnie is suspended in mid-air, appears to come flying down from outer space whenever his brother yells ‘Ronnie’, for urgent relief. He then proceeds to toss people, cars, helicopters and tanks around. The only difference is in the absence of appropriate accoutrement. He is bare bodied, instead of being dressed in the customary tights and a cape.

At first Ronnie takes on gangsters in Agra, with all credit for the encounters going to his brother. This astonishing rate of success at quelling the thugs of the city, brings the self effacing Vikram to the limelight, and then to the notice of New Delhi. The Indian Government needs a brave man in Syria to rescue expatriates there from a dangerous warlord called Abu Jalaal (Jameel Khoury), who is kidnapping South Asians, strapping them with suicide vests, and forcing them to blow themselves up at strategic sites.

Since the reality is that he is not a heroic police officer, the Klutzy Vikram is abducted the minute he checks in to his hotel in Syria. Ronnie then comes to rescue him, and the mayhem begins. That’s the plot.

The thing is that when you look at the spurt of Hindi films supposedly set in Islamic nations – films like ‘Agent Vinod’, ‘ Airlift’, ‘War’ – you also see an enormous amount of bigotry, and huge stereotyping of these nations as hotbeds of terrorism. The connection between politics and culture is symbiotic. Just like Hollywood movies function as the soft power of the State, so does popular culture of Indian origin, as it travels round the world. On one occasion in ‘Baaghi 3′ Ronnie declares that if anything happens to his brother, he will wipe out Syria from the map of the world. This line is delivered in a manner that is designed to entertain, but as perceptions start to change about the Indian State, it will not be read so humorously.

Tiger has a sculpted and finely chiselled torso that turns his action sequences into a dance form. But when the content in the script becomes slimmer, and, inversely, the propaganda element in the movie increases, the hero begins to look like an empty vessel. The only solutions his films offer is cataclysmic violence, enhanced by computer generated effects.

‘Baghi 3’ is a dull film.

Baaghi 3 Movie Review: Get Ready To Skip!

Everything is a follow-up to the finale act and once that comes, by that time you're not even there in it..

baaghi 3 movie review

Star Cast: Tiger Shroff, Riteish Deshmukh, Vijay Varma, Shraddha Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, Ankita Lokhande, Jameel Khoury

Director: Ahmed Khan

Baaghi 3 Movie Review: Get Ready To Skip!

What’s Good: The fear of watching it for the first time, it’s over with the film and now I won’t have to watch it again

What’s Bad: Ruining a good script that had the potential to be huge

Loo Break: It’s increasing with every Baaghi, so in this one – three times

Watch or Not?: Watch the original Baaghi three times instead of this (or Baaghi 2 one and a half times!)

Ironically, just as this week’s Disney-Pixar’s Onwards, Baaghi 3 is also about the growing bond of two brothers over their dead father. Continuing the identity from the first two instalments, Ronnie (Tiger Shroff) has a brother Vikram (Riteish Deshmukh), who cries after watching Judwaa and Judwaa 2. He’s oversensitive about things and Ronnie helps him to get into police.

Being a saviour, Ronnie stays with Vikram on every case and helps him to garner the applaud. Vikram gets in the bad books of the bad guys and starts becoming a problem for them. He gets sent to Syria for routine paperwork but then realises it was a trap. What does Ronnie do next and how will he defend Vikram against a nation? Are you kidding me? You have answers to both the questions above.

Baaghi 3 Movie Review: Get Ready To Skip!

Baaghi 3 Movie Review: Script Analysis

The script comes with the potential of being a blockbuster but it’s the execution and casting that fails to deliver. Farhad Samji’s dialogues are so bad that they’re bad. Censor board has ruined an already failed attempt of comedy in the film. Bhos**** becomes Bhelsevpurio, Maa-Behan becomes Maa Ke Eklaute Bache and Behan Ke Ache Bhai, Ga*** Phatt gayi becomes Chaddar Phatt gayi and much more. Actually, these are funny than the original ‘self beeped’ ones.

The only people who acted throughout the film are the audience watching it, acting really hard to be there. Everything is a follow-up to the finale act and once that comes, by that time you’re not even there in it. Before bashing me for not liking commercial films, please go and read my review of Baaghi 2.

Baaghi 3 Movie Review: Star Performance

Despite the superfluous chaos happening all around, Tiger Shroff appears to broaden his horizon as an actor. There are no two thoughts about his action avatar but he seemed comfortable under Ronnie’s skin. He’s polishing his skills with every film and the efforts are totally visible. Though he still can’t pull off emotional sequences.

Riteish Deshmukh’s performance is a ham-fest. There was a similar situation for him in Marjaavaan but it at least suited Riteish’s personality. This one is just not something he could pull off. What is Shraddha Kapoor even doing in the film? Her biggest achievement in the film is she’s Tiger’s half-baked love interest. She adds nothing but an annoyance to the story.

Vijay Varma, Jaideep Ahlawat and Jameel Khoury are the only actors who did their job half-decent. Vijay is the best of the lot gets some ridiculous lines to burden the comic relief of the film.

Baaghi 3 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Apart from a few smooth action sequences, there’s nothing new Ahmed Khan brings to the table. The whole idea of one man against a nation is hyperbolic. Nothing’s registered well because of the flimsy plot and even good scenes lose their impact because of the same. There’s a scene in which Shraddha Kapoor says about movies in general, “Reality se koso door hoti hai yeh movies” and she says this dialogue in a film like this. This is the best worst thing that could even happen.

Baaghi’s theme has been used well in the background score and that’s pretty much the only cool thing about it. Bhankas falls flat, Do You Love Me is bearable because of Disha.

Baaghi 3 Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Baaghi 3 is high on action and low on everything else. It starts scattering from the word go and there’s nothing left till the climax apart from some good moves by Tiger Shroff.

Two and a half stars!

Exactly in the year 1990, released a film titled BAAGHI: A REBEL FOR LOVE that starred Salman Khan and Naghma, which was Salman Khan's second big release. Exactly 26 years later, Bollywood today witnesses a film with the same title BAAGHI, starring Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor. This film, incidentally also happens to be Tiger Shroff's second film. Will this film help Tiger Shroff to reach dizzying heights like his 'predecessor' or will it prove to be a 'rebel with a pause' at the box-office, lets' analyze.

The film starts off with the introduction of Ronny (Tiger Shroff) and the kidnapping of Sia (Shraddha Kapoor). Desperate for money for the treatment of a young boy, Ronny undertakes the task of getting back Sia from the clutches of the villainous Raghav (Sudheer Babu). As he boards the flight, the viewers are treated to a flashback of events that connects Ronny's yesterday with his today. The flashback of events reflect the blooming love story between Ronny and Sia and how Sia's money minded father (Sunil Grover) plays the villain in their love story and agrees to marry her off to Raghav, who lures him with oodles of money. Because of a certain misunderstanding between Ronny and Sia, their relationship goes for a toss. Ronny, meanwhile, at the behest of his late father Colonel Samarjeet Singh, unwillingly becomes the student in the Kerala based Academy Of Kalaripayattu, that's run by Guruji (Grandmaster Shifuji Shaurya Bharadwaj). In due course of time, Guruji tames the wild and carefree Ronny into an extremely disciplined student… in other words, a rebel with a cause. But, when Guruji gets to know about his son Raghav's plan of forcibly marrying Sia, he raises strong objection. That's when the emotionless Raghav kills his father. And when Ronny gets to know that Raghav, who has Sia as his captive, is also the one who killed Guruji, hell breaks loose and Ronny becomes uncontrollable. But, the catch is that, in order to reach Raghav, Ronny has to tackle a battalion of henchmen because Raghav stays in the well protected 'layered' building, whose each floor is also the domain of his extremely well trained henchmen. Does Ronny becomes successful in reaching Raghav despite all the odds, is he able to clear Sia's misunderstanding towards him, does he become successful to avenge the killing of his Guruji and is he able to rescue his ladylove Sia from Raghav's captive is what forms the rest of the film.

The story of the film is simple and caters to the masses, and this is where the film scores. The film's screenplay (Sanjeev Dutta), which is loosely based on Hollywood flick THE RAID REDEMPTION, is decent and convincing. The way it establishes the characters and their respective characteristics is indeed laudable.

The film's director Sabbir Khan, whose last film was HEROPANTI (Tiger Shroff's debut film), does a good job with BAAGHI. The comfort level between Sabbir Khan and Tiger Shroff works in the favour of the film. The way in which Sabbir Khan has shot action sequences is praiseworthy. Given Tiger Shroff's natural flair for action, the film looks very stylish and the person who needs to be credited for that is Sabbir Khan. In other words, Sabbir Khan has rightfully tapped Tiger Shroff's biggest strength and forte: action. Despite good direction, the film suffers from some loopholes in the script. The film's narrative is gripping though and has its strong moments. Even though the romance in the film is not well defined, the action sequences in the film more than makes up for the same.

As for as the performances are concerned, the film rides on the shoulders of the young guns, Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor. It is really nice to see Tiger Shroff playing to his (core) strengths. Besides his introduction scene in the film (which will surely be greeted with seetis and talis), his effortless action is a visual delight to watch. Like mentioned earlier, action being his forte, he is at ease in the film. The romantic chemistry that he shares with Shraddha Kapoor is decent. The way in which he flaunts his chiselled, well-sculpted physique with six packs uninhibitedly, gets him the brownie points (esp during the action sequences, which he has performed without the body double). With this film, he definitely takes the action level notches higher. Testimony to this are the scenes where he rescues the kid and followed by his confrontation with the villain. As for Shraddha Kapoor, she has definitely tried her level best to match upto the requirements of her character. Be ready to be surprised to see her throwing some punches in the extremely well choreographed action sequences. Besides looking extremely gorgeous, her endearing screen presence makes her and Tiger Shroff a beautiful on-screen couple. BAAGHI also heralds the arrival of a new baddie in Bollywood by the name of Sudheer Babu, an actor from down south. The way in which he conveys through his eyes and expressions is something to watch out for. With a hero like Tiger Shroff, who is so very powerful in action, the movie really needed a villain who could complement and match his antics. And Sudheer does an exemplary task of matching up with him in every frame. Besides making an impactful and terrific debut in the film, he is definitely an actor to watch out for. The veteran Sanjay Mishra's comedy makes up for the light moments in the action movie. A special mention to Grandmaster Shifuji Shaurya Bharadwaj for his unabashed and raw screen presence. The rest of the characters help in moving the film forward.

Despite the fact that the film's music (Meet Bros, Amaal Mallik, Ankit Tiwari, Manj Musik) is decent, it could have been a bit better. The lack of a chartbuster track is sorely felt in the film. The film's background music (Julius Packiam) is brilliant and gives the movie it's pace. A special mention to the film's action directors by Kecha Khamphakdee and Javed-Aejaz who have done an excellent job. Do not miss the film's penultimate 30-minute long action sequence that leaves you spellbound.

The film's cinematography (Binod Pradhan) is top rate. The way in which he has presented the fabulous locales of Kerala and Thailand make the film nothing short of a visually stunning experience. On the other hand, the film's editing (Manan Sagar) is tight.

On the whole, BAAGHI is a typical masala entertainer which scores high on action and performances from the lead cast. With focus on entertainment, the film is, without a doubt, the best action film to come out of Bollywood in recent times. It has all the merits to hit the jackpot. At the box office, it will be lapped up by the masses on the account of its masala quotient. Highly recommended.
