What is a Scholarship Cover Letter?

A cover letter for scholarship application is an important and useful document that gives applicants for a scholarship the opportunity to express themselves and also provide details about their capabilities and goals.

A scholarship proposal letter which should be written to a scholarship committee, should explain what makes you a great candidate for the award, because the scholarship committee wants to find the most fitting students to invest their money in. Make them see the reasons why they should they choose you.

There are lots of applicants with excellent academic record who fit the bill of a great scholarship candidate. However, many scholarship committees look beyond just grades when choosing their preferred candidate for the award.

They look at students who have overcome struggles, as well as students who are leaders in their community, with unique hobbies. Your cover letter for award application is your best choice at convincing the scholarship committee.

Parts of a Cover Letter for Scholarship

Whether you are writing for an undergraduate scholarship award, or a cover letter for masters’ scholarship, or a cover letter for PhD scholarship, you need to ensure that your cover sheet for scholarship application meets the application standards.

Specifically, there are five parts of a cover letter for applying scholarship.

Personal information

Just like every other ordinary letter, there must be a head section that shows your full name, department, University name, and address, on your cover page for scholarship application.

Salutation and opening paragraph

Start with an opening paragraph that briefly introduces who you are, and your relevant experience, how you learned about the scholarship, and why you are interested in applying.

Body paragraph(s)

What you are really addressing in this section is what makes you deserving of this particular scholarship, so make sure that everything you include in your cover letter for scholarship essay, bolsters your case. You may need just one body paragraph or several (always check the length requirement first).

Closing paragraph

End your application cover letter for scholarship with a closing paragraph that restates your interest in the scholarship and why you should be considered. Include a call to action to inspire the committee to reach out to you.

You can do this with a simple "sincerely / best regards", your full name and signature.

RE: Scholarship Application

Dear Mr. Barnabas,

I am writing to submit my application for Concordia University College of Alberta’s Scholarship Program for fall 2022.  Presently, I am a first-year student of the Master of Computer Science program. In order to prove my diligence, I have enclosed copies of my academic accomplishments.

I am currently facing some financial difficulties, which has seen me struggle to pay my fee for the fall semester. I am planning to obtain a part-time job to manage the finances of my studies, but it would not be enough to cover the full tuition and accommodation fee. Based on my deprived financial condition, I request for a student scholarship so that I would be able to continue my studies in anticipation of an improved financial situation.

If you have any questions regarding my application, please feel free to contact me anytime at (000) 555-0335.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

It’s easy to get put off by scholarship applications that require a cover letter. Cover letters may seem annoying but there is a bright side here. A simple letter gives you another opportunity to convince the scholarship committee that you deserve to win the award.

So how do you start? What should you include in the letter? How should you end it?  In this post, we’ll answer all these questions and we’ll even provide a sample letter that you can use as a template in the end.

What Is a Cover Letter?

Let’s start with the basics. A cover letter for a scholarship is similar to a cover letter you’d submit for a job . What does that mean exactly?

It’s simply a letter you write to the scholarship committee. In the letter you should explain what makes you a great candidate for the award. You should also talk about how the scholarship will help you reach your educational and career goals .

The scholarship committee wants to find the most fitting students to invest their money in. Make them see the reasons why they should they invest in you.

Why a Cover Letter?

cover letter for scholarship application pdf

Whether you have those things or not, many scholarship committees look for something else.  They look at students who have overcome struggles. Students who are leaders in their community. And students who have unique hobbies. Your cover letter is the place to show off your unique self.

Although not every scholarship application requires students to submit a cover letter, when they do, it’s a great idea to submit a great one. Use the opportunity to think about how can you make yourself stand out from other applicants. What is unique to you that other applicants don’t have? Brainstorm and show it off!

What Should Your Cover Letter Accomplish?

Your cover letter should do the following:

  • Highlight your strengths: Why do your strengths make you a good match for the scholarship?
  • Express what your plans are for the future: How will this particular scholarship help get you there?
  • Convey a clear structure: Your cover letter should flow in a clear and concise manner.

Cover letters can be a great opportunity for you to convince the scholarship committee that you are the best candidate for the scholarship. Take time writing your cover letter and don’t wait until the final days before the deadline to start writing. A little bit of effort, could be the difference  that helps you win the award!

Scholarship Cover Letter Example

Alexis Smith 4519 Owl St. Bend, OH 45052

The Scholarship Committee University of Pennsylvania  3440 Market Street Philadelphia, PA 19104

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Alex Smith and I am a high school senior in Bend, Ohio. In the fall of 2019, I will be starting my freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania at the Annenberg School of Communication with an intended major in communications.

Since my freshman year of high school, I have served on my school’s journalism team. During freshman and sophomore year, I worked as a writer. By junior and senior year, I became the senior editor and co-manager of the school paper. Throughout my four years of being part of the club, I have learned so much about journalism; from pitching creative ideas, to carrying out interviews, and writing up an article. I have also learned about editing and publishing. Although these tasks intimidated me in the beginning, I can confidently say that I now feel very skilled and knowledgeable about the field.

I am particularly passionate about giving the underserved population a voice to be heard. Some of my favorite interviews and articles I have published have been with female refugees from the community here in Ohio. Some of my articles have been published in our local paper in Bend.

Of course, there is so much that I still have and want to learn. I am eager to start my undergraduate education and learn from experts in the field. I am excited to take journalism, communication, and marketing courses and learn everything there is to know. I am also hoping to work with the Pennsylvania Daily and join the journalism club on campus. I want to take advantage of every opportunity offered to further my career and personal growth.

As you are well aware, the cost of college is very high. As much as I have saved during high school, I will still have to take out loans to fund my college education. I am planning to work part-time during my studies, but I don’t want work to interfere too much with my school work. This scholarship would greatly help me cover some of these fees and give me more time to focus on school.

I am very hardworking and creative, and I can’t wait to contribute my talents to the University of Pennsylvania. I would be so grateful to receive a scholarship. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Alexis Smith

Scholarship cover letter

Writing a scholarship cover letter can be daunting, especially if you're already navigating the job market and understand the importance of standing out. Unlike your resume, which lists your achievements, your cover letter should weave a narrative around your proudest professional moment. It requires a delicate balance of formality and originality to avoid clichés, all while fitting your enthusiasm and story neatly within one page. Let's tackle how to craft a cover letter that makes a memorable impression.

  • Introduce your profile to catch recruiters' attention;
  • Use professional templates and examples to make sure your scholarship cover letter follows the best industry standards;
  • Settle on your most story-worthy achievement to shine a light on what makes your application unique;
  • Write a scholarship cover letter, even when you lack professional experience.

Ready to start with the basics: upload your resume to Enhancv's AI, below, to see the scholarship cover letter it would write for you.

  • Tailored Experience: The cover letter provides a customized example relevant to the media organization's values, like the investigative piece on school support staff, demonstrating the ability to create stories with significant community impact.
  • Results-Oriented Achievements: It quantifies the success of previous work, such as a 65% increase in readership, which can be particularly persuasive by showing measurable outcomes connected to the applicant’s contributions.
  • Passion for the Field: Expressing enthusiasm for meaningful storytelling and objective reporting indicates a genuine interest that goes beyond the standard requirements of the role.
  • Alignment with Organizational Goals: Reference to the applicant’s desire to contribute to the "narrative integrity" suggests a shared vision with the potential employer, implying a good cultural fit.

Structuring and formatting your scholarship cover letter

Here's what the structure of your scholarship cover letter should include:

  • Header (with your name, the position you're applying for, and the date);
  • Salutation (or greeting);
  • Introductory paragraph (or your opening statement);
  • Body paragraph (or further proof of your experience);
  • Closing paragraph (with a call to action);
  • Signature (that is optional).

Use the same font for your scholarship resume and cover letter - modern fonts like Lato and Rubik would help you stand out.

Your scholarship cover letter should be single-spaced and have a one-inch margins - this format is automatically set up in our cover letter templates and our cover letter builder .

When submitting your cover letter, always ensure it's in PDF, as this format keeps the information intact (and the quality of your document stays the same).

On one final note - the Applicant Tracker System (ATS or the software that is sometimes used to initially assess your application) won't read your scholarship cover letter.

The top sections on a scholarship cover letter

  • Header: Include your name, address, phone number, email, and the date, ensuring the scholarship committee can easily identify and contact you.
  • Salutation: Address the letter to the specific person handling the scholarships if possible, showing attention to detail and a personalized touch.
  • Introduction: Introduce yourself, mention the scholarship you are applying for, and briefly highlight your academic achievements or unique qualifications that make you a strong candidate.
  • Scholarship-focused Body: Detail your academic goals, extracurricular involvement, community service, and how the scholarship will help you achieve your educational and career objectives, emphasizing the alignment with the scholarship's purpose.
  • Conclusion and Formal Closing: Summarize your qualifications, reiterate your gratitude for the opportunity, and close with a formal sign-off, such as "Sincerely," followed by your name, leaving a lasting professional impression.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

Academic Excellence: Strong grades and a proven track record of intellectual achievements reflect dedication and the capacity to excel in rigorous educational environments.

Leadership Experience: Holding positions in student organizations, clubs, or community groups demonstrates the ability to lead and manage teams, an essential skill in many fields.

Relevant Extracurricular Activities: Participation in activities related to the field of study or industry of the scholarship shows a genuine interest and initiative for growth in that specific area.

Community Service and Volunteering: A history of volunteering indicates a commitment to social responsibility and a willingness to contribute to the community, aligning with the values of many scholarship programs.

Unique Personal or Professional Experiences: Overcoming personal challenges, succeeding in diverse environments, or having distinctive work experience can set a candidate apart, showing resilience, adaptability, and a unique perspective.

Research Experience or Contributions to the Field: Any previous research, publications, or contributions to the professional field of the scholarship interest show dedication and a proactive approach toward advancing in the area of study.

What matters most when tailoring your scholarship cover letter salutation

Your scholarship cover letter greeting should feel welcoming to recruiters.

Use their first name (e.g. "Dear Marshall" or "Dear Sara"), if you've previously been in touch with the hiring manager and are on a more friendly basis.

If this is the first time you're contacting the recruiters, start your scholarship cover letter with:

  • their last name (e.g. "Dear Ms. Ali" or "Dear Mr. Stevens") - look up who's the hiring manager for the role on social media or the company website;
  • generalized greeting (e.g. "Dear HR Team") - just don't use "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam".

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear [Scholarship Committee Name],
  • Dear [University Name] Scholarship Committee,
  • Dear [Department Name] Scholarship Coordinator,
  • Dear [Title] [Last Name],
  • Esteemed Scholarship Committee,

Your scholarship cover letter introduction and the value you bring

Moving on from the "Dear Recruiter" to your professional introduction .

Use those first two sentences of your scholarship cover letter to present the biggest asset you'd bring to the organization.

Don't go into too much detail about your achievement or the skill set, but instead - go straight for the win.

That is - what is your value as a professional?

Would you be able to build stronger, professional relationships in any type of communication? Or, potentially, integrate seamlessly into the team?

What comes next: your scholarship cover letter middle paragraphs

In the next three to six paragraphs (or the body of your scholarship cover letter) you have to prove your unique value .

Most candidates tend to mess up at this stage. They tend to just copy-paste information from their resume.

That's one big no-no.

Remember that when writing your scholarship cover letter, it has to be personalized. And, your ultimate aim is to catch the recruiter's eye.

So, look back on key job requirements and write down a list that includes the ones you cover.

Next, select just one key achievement from your professional (or personal) history that meets those advert keywords.

Narrate a story around how you've grown your skill set and knowledge. Also, aim to show the unique understanding or soft skills you bring about, thanks to your past success.

Two ideas on how to end the final paragraph of your scholarship cover letter

Closing your scholarship cover letter , you want to leave a memorable impression on recruiters, that you're a responsible professional.

End your cover letter with how you envision your growth, as part of the company. Make realistic promises on what you plan to achieve, potentially, in the next six months to a year.

Before your signature, you could also signal hiring managers that you're available for the next steps. Or, a follow-up call, during which you could further clarify your experience or professional value.

Keep this in mind when writing your zero experience scholarship cover letter

Even though you may not have any professional experience , your scholarship cover letter should focus on your value.

As a candidate for the particular role, what sort of skills do you bring about? Perhaps you're an apt leader and communicator, or have the ability to analyze situations from different perspectives.

Select one key achievement from your life, outside work, and narrate a story that sells your abilities in the best light.

If you really can't think of any relevant success, you could also paint the picture of how you see your professional future developing in the next five years, as part of the company.

Key takeaways

Turning your scholarship cover letter into a success is all about staying authentic to yourself and relevant to the job:

  • Be creative with your scholarship cover letter introduction by stating something you enjoy about the company (that is genuine) or about your skill set (to get the recruiters' interested);
  • Use single spacing and have a one-inch margin wrapping all around the content of your scholarship cover letter;
  • Select just one past achievement from your career or life to tell a story of how you've obtained job-crucial skills and how they'd be beneficial to the role;
  • The finishing paragraph of your scholarship cover letter doesn't necessarily have to be a signature but could be a promise of what you plan to achieve in the role;
  • Instead of focusing on your lack of experience, spotlight your transferable skills, one relevant achievement, and career dreams.

Scholarship Application Letter Samples (Writing a Strong Application)

Students sometimes face financial constraints challenges, making it hard for them to afford tuition fees as stipulated by their school of choice. Nevertheless, several colleges, universities, and organizations offer scholarships to eligible students to assist them financially. If you are unsure about how to write a strong Scholarship application letter, this article will be very useful to you. in this article, we have provided a step-by-step guide on how to write a killer scholarship application letter, several samples, and templates that are readily available for download for your reference.

What is a Scholarship Application Letter?

A scholarship cover letter is a useful document that allows applicants to express themselves and deliver details about their goals and abilities. The scholarship letter usually serves as a formal introduction to the scholarship committee in addition to identifying you as the prime candidate for the specific scholarship being offered and is accompanied by the sponsoring organization’s materials.

A candidate justifies himself/herself as an outstanding student in overall studies and extracurricular activities to increase their chances of getting the scholarship through a scholarship application letter.

Sections of a Scholarship Application Letter (Format)

A scholarship cover letter should have different sections and paragraphs, with each part serving a different role:

Introduction

Provide your contact information, e.g., full names, address, and telephone number. Briefly introduce yourself to the scholarship committee or individual and add a milestone achievement to draw their attention.

First Paragraph

Your introductory paragraph should focus on your educational and career goals. Discuss your interests and show passion in the chosen area of course work. Give the funding organization all the reasons to choose to invest in you and help further your education. In simpler terms, show your worth.

Second Paragraph

The second paragraph needs to focus on your strengths. If you have participated in any extracurricular activities or you have had your hands on any community work, include it in this paragraph. Any academic accolades and awards should also be listed in this section. The second paragraph is usually all about selling yourself and your capabilities to the decision-makers of a scholarship.

Third Paragraph

In this section, talk about why it should be considered for the application. Speak directly to the individual or organization that is handling out the money in a professional manner. However, refrain from acting desperate for money, but rather, desperate for education. It is not wrong to talk about books, food, housing, and other school costs.

You can add the fourth paragraph if there is much to talk about.

Call to action paragraph

This is the last paragraph of your letter. Close strongly by highlighting any talents or special skills you possess and letting the funding company or individual feel confident that the course work will be completed. Restate your educational and career goals, and include a call-to-action statement.

Length of your cover letter

The letter should be around 1-2 pages maximum. Use font 12 and double spacing to make it easy to read through.Proofread your letter for clerical errors to ensure it is perfect.

How to Write

Cover letters written for scholarships may break or increase your chances of getting the scholarship you badly need. These letters are not very different from job application letters, but the idea is to market your capabilities to the scholarship providers. Thus, as a student in need of a scholarship, you need to understand how to write a good cover letter to improve your personal goals. The following are some tips on how to write an appealing scholarship application cover letter.

Explain why you are a good match for the scholarship

A well-written scholarship cover letter is an opportunity for you to overview your main strengths from an educational and professional point of view, your career development goals and plans, why you would be suitable for this scholarship, and how it will benefit you if selected. Ensure that you cover all this information using specific examples where possible.

Use a formal tone, a clear structure, and check spellings

Use a formal tone to write your scholarship application cover letter and employ a clear, concise, structured flow. Make sure to check and correct any spelling and grammar mistakes. Try asking another person with an objective eye to proofread your cover before submitting it to ensure you did a successful one. This also allows you to minimize the risk of any grammatical or spelling errors and helps you remove any unclear, redundant, or irrelevant information.

Match your cover letter to the context

Certain situations of scholarship applications require you to attach a cover letter. During the same time, you might be applying for admission to a program or an institution, or you may be applying for a grant or scholarship to cover your tuition fees or any other costs related to a program you have already been accepted to.

If your scholarship letter is intended for the initial case, begin your letter with a formal address and greetings, then do a short paragraph explaining your academic skills, strengths, and achievements. Your second paragraph should explain why you need the scholarship to fund your studies. The third paragraph should describe how the given program, project, or course you are applying for will help you meet your goals and objectives and how you will contribute during your studies. Your closing should be polite and formal.

If you are applying for funding for a program you have already been admitted to, consider these few aspects.

  • Use a formal address and greetings, then a brief paragraph emphasizing your academic skills.
  • The second paragraph should emphasize your financial situation and the reasons prompting you to need the funding
  • Your third paragraph should be about your interest in studying in that particular institution and how much value you will get from it,
  • Conclude your cover letter strongly by highlighting your strengths, academic skills, and goals to ensure your success.

What “NOT” to Include in your Letter

  • Avoid adding your weaknesses: Do not mention any of your weaknesses. Since many people will be sending in their applications every day, you don’t want to come off as the weaker applicant, thereby reducing your chances of landing the scholarship.
  • Don’t use an informal tone. Always be professional when writing the letter. You don’t know who will be reviewing your application, so make sure that you stick to a formal tone.
  • Never submit your cover letter before proofreading. After drafting your letter, make sure to go through it several times to ensure it is free of any errors and that every detail is well captured.
  • Avoid adding unnecessary or untrue information: Since you are trying to sell yourself, don’t exaggerate too much. At times, honesty is the best policy. Don’t lie; be simple and straight forward in your writing.
  • Do not hide your need for financial aid: Remember why you are writing the application. Do not be embarrassed to ask for help.

Tips for a Strong Application Letter

Many students fall under the category of those who are eligible for a scholarship. Whether you have those things or not, scholarship committees look for something else. That is students who have overcome challenges and major struggles, students who are leaders in their community, and those who have hobbies. It is a great idea to submit a scholarship application letter as it is your opportunity to think about how you can make yourself stand out from the other applicants and be selected for that scholarship sponsorship.

Application for Scholarship Format

To write a good scholarship application letter, you have to be familiar with its structure.

Following the right scholarship format will help you compose your letter in a better way. A scholarship application letter has six major components which includes; the header, the salutation, introduction, the body, the conclusion and the closing.

The body of the letter contains the most important details required by the scholarship committee and it is usually divided into 2 or 3 paragraphs.

Here, we'll discuss the different components of a scholarship application letter. Keep reading to find out more.

Header: The header is the first part of a scholarship application letter located at the top of the letter.  It should include your complete contact information such as your name, address, phone number, and email address.

You can also include the title of the letter typed in a bold font.

Salutation: Next is a professional salutation to begin the scholarship application letter. Examples of salutations you may use include; "Dear Scholarship Committee" “Respected Sir/Ma” or "To Whom It May Concern."

Introduction: After the salutation is the introductory paragraph. This is the official first paragraph of the letter where the scholarship applicant is expected to briefly introduce themselves and state the purpose of the letter.

The introduction can be written in three to five concise sentences.

An important tip to keep in mind when writing your introduction is to keep things as straight to the point as possible.

Body: the body of a scholarship application letter is where the main content lies. In the body of the letter, you'll provide details about your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and any relevant experiences that will convince the scholarship committee to grant you the scholarship.

As we discussed earlier, the body of a scholarship application letter can be divided into 3 paragraphs. Let's discuss each of the paragraphs.

First Paragraph: in the first paragraph, write about your academic achievement and record. You can outline all the degrees you have gotten and their grades, you can also highlight your future plans for your academics.

Second Paragraph:   The second paragraph details your work experience and extracurricular activities that may be relevant to the scholarship.

Third Paragraph:   In the third paragraph, you can go a little further to explain how the scholarship will help you achieve your academic goals and why you deserve the scholarship.

Conclusion:  The conclusion should be a strong statement summarising why you are a good fit for the scholarship. It should highlight key points you have made in the previous paragraphs and should fit into 2 or 3 sentences.

Lastly, thank the scholarship committee for their time and consideration in one sentence.

Closing:   Always end your Scholarship Application Letter with a simple closing remark, like "Yours Sincerely" or "Kind Regards.”

It is important to keep your closing as professional as possible. The scholarship application letter is a formal letter so you want to avoid using any form of informal or casual remark or language.

What Is a Scholarship Cover Letter?

A scholarship cover letter is the first page of your scholarship letter you will be sending to the school or company that you are interested in sending. This is the most important part of your scholarship letter, and without this, chances are, they will disregard your application. Your cover letter holds all the most important details they will need without looking at the rest of the pages. In the first page of your letter, you will be putting your strengths, weaknesses, your educational background, your achievements from middle school throughout senior high. In addition to that, it is also the same place they will find  your future plans, and how you can benefit from them. Lastly, it is also where they check if you pass all the requirements they are looking for in a scholar.

How do You Write a Scholarship Cover Letter?

When writing a cover letter, you must first do the following:.

Before wowing everyone with your impressive scholarship cover letter, here are some of the basic things you need to remember, as these too are also important.

  • Put the complete date as to when you are going to send the letter. Add the name of the person whom the letter is addressed to. Don’t forget to place his or her title or her rank, the name of the school or the company you wish to send the scholarship letter for.

In addition to what is stated above, don’t forget the simple basic steps in writing a cover letter for a scholarship. You can get creative, you are selling yourself in the form of a scholarship cover letter. This is where all your important information is found.

  • In the first paragraph you must introduce yourself. Give them your complete name, not your nickname. This is a formal letter.

  • Add any or all of your great achievements during your middle school years through senior high school years in the same paragraph. May it be, at extra curricular activities and or in academics.
  • For the second paragraph, this is where you put out the details about you. Explain to them as to why you believe you deserve the scholarship. Be as descriptive and clear as possible. If you are too vague, they may think you are not taking this too seriously. This will help them see if you are fit the requirements they seek in the scholarship they are offering.
  • Lastly, illustrate to them in your cover letter as to why you deserve the scholarship. What do you have that can be useful to them if you are applying from a company. Explain to them why you think you are the one who deserves this opportunity. Do I have to be specific with my cover letter?

Yes, you have to be specific with your cover letter.

If I don’t know the name of the person to send, what do I do?

If you have no idea who to send your cover letter too, all you have to do is to add their title, the name of the school or the company, and the address.

Should I state my strengths and weaknesses?

Yes, as this is easier for them to see if you fit the requirements for the scholarship.

Can I send the same scholarship cover letter to another school?

It may depend if the school you are applying the scholarship offers what you are looking for, but yes, it is fine.

Jasmine Tigers,

55, Wellspring Street,

St Catherine, Ontario,

21 - 09 - 2020

Admission Committee,

University of Texas,

Austin, Texas

United States of America

Dear Committee,

My name is Jasmine Tigers. I am well - pleased to apply for a scholarship to study International Marketing Management at the University of Texas. I wish to obtain a Master's Degree in that course as it would augment my first degree in Public Relations and Advertising and parlay my work experience.

I can feel myself as incurably passionate about marketing. I have always had an uncontrollable fervor for promoting services and products that improve the standard of living. This zeal propelled me to study Public Relations and Advertising here in Ontario. While studying, I got acquainted with varying practices that can facilitate marketing schemes and support good corporate social responsibility. This course made me thoroughly involved in advertising. I spearheaded most of the project assignment and workshops in public awareness. I also left school campaigns on campus with measurable success.

My work experience was a continuation of the record I set for myself. I became the Assistant PR of two news agencies and the Director of Advertising of a media company. I plan PR campaigns and strategies, monitor the public opinion of my clients of my organization and maintained the desired image of the companies I worked for. My contribution to the companies I work for resulted to my motivation as the employee of the year.

My short term goals to obtain a Master's degree in International Marketing Management. I want to be exposed to broader aspects of marketing. Particularly, my long term goal is to lead a marketing department of a multinational company with International audience. I am looking forward to discussing about how we can have an interchange of ways in which we can actualize the goods of department and mine.

Best Regards,

Jasmine Tigers.

RE: scholarship application

Dear Mr. Fischer,

I am writing to you to submit my application for a scholarship to Edu Tech's Financial Aid Program for the semester starting September 2018. I have been provisionally accepted on your Computer Science program but no longer have the financial means to begin my studies in the Fall.

I have enclosed my acceptance letter and a copy of my high school grades to show my high academic achievements.

I have been highly commended for my work in so far in the field of computing and your admissions office stated that I was a student with ‘exceptional potential' and that I would be an asset to the school. I have been my ambition to attend the school and progress into a computing career for many years.

Unfortunately, my family has been hit by large medical bills following my father's bout with cancer and I have now been left without the necessary financial means to pay the fees required to join the course in September.

At my high school, I was an active part of the community outside of the academic curriculum, including playing on the baseball team and being an active part of the school newspaper. I am an active member of the community wherever I go and believe this attribute would be of huge benefit to Edu Tech.

I have always been impressed with your school's scholarship program and hope that this could offer me a lifeline to still attend your university. I intend to work in employment to improve my circumstances and study while my family goes through this difficult time.

Thank you for your consideration. If you require any further information on my application, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Thanks for your time on this matter.

Kind Regards, Connor Matthews

Tips for Writing a Scholarship Cover Letter

Writing a cover letter for a scholarship is a special type of cover letter and you need to strike the right tone. You are essentially asking the institution to allow you to study for free. The scholarship cover letter needs to make your case and provide positive reasons for you getting the scholarship while often talking about negative circumstances. There are many scholarship cover letter examples available online, but the above cover letter scholarship sample is a good place to start. These tips will further outline what you need to include in your own cover letter.

  • This is one of the most important letters you will ever write. Use a formal letter template and a readable font to create the right impression and show that you are serious about your request.
  • Address the letter to the correct member of the university staff. Scholarship departments get a lot of requests and not addressing the letter correctly is likely to get it rejected quickly. Avoid general greetings like ‘To Whom It May Concern.'
  • Begin by explaining the purpose of your sending the letter. Generally, it is because you are submitting an application for a scholarship or financial aid program at a specific university. Name the university and the exact program you are applying too so the staff member can process it easily and quickly.
  • Mention the supporting documents that you have included and why.
  • Start with a positive about yourself. This candidate explains they have good grades and that during the application process they were highly commended by the admissions office. This shows that their attendance is wanted by the school.
  • This is where you need to explain why you need support. Be direct and to the point about your circumstances. Don't hide the reality but don't go into too much detail. The university staff member needs to understand the situation but not feel you are using emotion too much to win them over.
  • Return to positives about you as a person and your academic career. This candidate highlights their active involvement in their school community and culture. This sets them up as of more value to the school than simply their academic performance. At this point, they also mention how much they admire the school and the scholarship program for offering opportunities.
  • Mention that you are available to provide more information about your application or discuss it further should the reader wish to learn more. This will show your willingness to discuss the issues and your seriousness about gaining a scholarship.
  • This is a request for an academic scholarship and if your letter is littered with mistakes and typos you'll been rejected. This will not show your academic skills in a good light. Proofread thoroughly and, if possible, get someone else to look over your scholarship cover letter as well before sending it off.
