Google Slides Dimensions: What Size is Google Slides and How to Change Slide Size?

Slide dimensions can play an important role when displaying information on large screens or according to the type of content on the slide. A large screen would require a widescreen orientation, and you might even need to customize it to fit the screen size. Similarly, some infographics and illustrations require making necessary adjustments to slide orientation to display the content during the presentation correctly. Like PowerPoint, you can also change slide dimensions in Google Slides.

How to Change Slide Size in Google Slides

Google Slides allow setting different slide dimensions according to user needs, including a Standard, Widescreen, or Custom size. To change Google Slide dimensions, go to File > Page Setup .

You can adjust the Google Slides page size from the pop-up menu displayed via Page Setup. The available options include switching to Standard 4:3, Widescreen 16:9, Widescreen 16:10, and a custom slide size. Select the desired slide size and click Apply .

What Size is Google Slides?

If you’re wondering what Google Slides size is right for you, pick a Google Slides resolution that best goes with your screen type. If it’s an old monitor or small screen, you might want to use a Standard orientation, whereas modern monitors or projectors often suit the Widescreen orientation. 

Standard Orientation (4:3)

The Standard 4:3 slide orientation displays content in a smaller size compared to widescreen orientations. This orientation was commonly used in legacy versions of PowerPoint and Google Slides, as projectors and screen monitors did not offer the utility to project a widescreen slide correctly. However, this orientation is still used for smaller slides and screens. Where the slide content might be smaller and better suited to a Standard slide size. This might include pictures, illustrations, tables, and other types of slide content that might appear too stretched on a widescreen slide orientation.

Widescreen (16:9)

The 16:9 widescreen resolution is quite commonly used, and might even be considered the standard size for modern presentations. This is because 16:9 was the replacement for the 4:3 aspect ratio post-2008, as screen sizes and display standards evolved for monitors, projectors, and television channels globally.

Widescreen (16:10)

While 16:10 is not as widely used as 16:9; it is commonly used in tablets and computer monitors. The ratio is closer to the Golden Ratio of 1.618, but the higher manufacturing cost of devices has meant that manufacturers mainly stick to 16:9 for electronic devices.

Custom Orientation

Google Slides also provides a Custom orientation option, where you can also choose to pick the slide size in inches, centimeters, points, or pixels. This option can be useful if you intend to edit the slide orientation according to a specific document, picture, infographic, etc. For example, you can switch to 8.5 x 11 inches for Letter orientation or 8.27 inches for A4 size. Similarly, you can make changes in pixels, points, or centimeters.

When considering how to edit slide size on Google Slides according to your display monitor or presentation requirements, you might want to run a mock presentation with a colleague. If it’s a remote meeting, the slide size would automatically adjust due to the responsive UIs of various devices. However, one orientation or another might appear more convenient for your audience based on your presentation needs. For example, suppose your remote meeting participants are mainly using mobile devices. In that case, you might want to test out a lower resolution, compared to when you are presenting before an audience using a widescreen monitor.

When giving presentations on various screens, you may need to adjust the aspect ratio to fit the screen size. With Google Slides, you can choose from 16:9 (widescreen), 16:10, 4:3 (standard), or custom options. To do this, follow these steps for an easy change of your presentation’s proportions.

It’s important to keep in mind the consequences of modifying the aspect ratio of your presentation. After adjusting the slides, any elements and images within them will require readjustment. To change the aspect ratio of your slides, simply navigate to File → Page setup… and choose your desired option.

What is the meaning of numbers?

The aspect ratio refers to the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image, such as a slide. In the 4:3 aspect ratio, viewed as 1024 x 768 pixels (10.67″ x 8″), the height is 3/4 of the width. Historically, this was one of the most common ratios due to its use in slideshows, televisions, and early computer monitors.

How presentations are scaled?

We’re able to dynamically adjust your content so that it looks great on any display, without compromising the original aspect ratio. To do this, we employ a two-layer approach:

1- Background layer

The slide layer serves as the backdrop for your presentation content, seamlessly filling available display space to avoid letterboxing. It can accommodate colors or images at 100% width and height. The following figure is an example of how two layers—the background layer and the content layer—come together to effectively make use of the space: tiled images represent the background layer, while a lightbox denoting “SLIDE CONTENT” represents information streamed by users. 2- Content Layer

This area serves as a canvas for integrating content such as text and visual media. Design elements are maximized to their optimal size, diligently preserving the core layout of your slide.

What size should you choose?

The 16:9 aspect ratio is the preferred size for presenting slides in a wide variety of settings. The larger space provides ample room on which to create visuals and content. While 4:3 may still be used in some places, it typically looks out of place on modern displays. For your next presentation, consider building slides at 16:9 for an optimal viewing experience.

Other slide sizes for special events

When designing slides for an event, the 16:9 format might not be suitable. Last year, I was creating presentation slides for a corporate conference that included massive screens. The recommended slide size for the optimal viewing experience was 52″ x 17″, with a “leave this space blank” area on the bottom. Before any event, it is necessary to become acquainted with AV specialists and obtain information on what are their preferred specifications for visuals to prevent distorted graphics from appearing on stage.

Google has launched the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Watch 2 following a steady stream of leaks — plus Google’s own teasers — that left little to the imagination.

The Pixel 8 Pro has better cameras and a brighter screen to go with a starting price of $999. Meanwhile, the standard Pixel 8 has a slightly smaller 6.2-inch display compared to its predecessor. Both phones share Google’s new Tensor G3 chipset, as well as Android 14 out of the box and a promise of seven years of OS upgrades , and are available for preorders starting today.

IDC VP Francisco Jeronimo posted this week that Google has sold 37.9 million Pixel phones globally since 2016. 9to5Google did some math concluding that the company sold about 10 million of them in the last 12 months — an improvement over its 2019 best of 7.2 million.

That’s progress, but then again, Apple and Samsung each shipped hundreds of millions of phones last year, so those new Pixel 8 phones have a lot of ground to make up.

For an unusual feature on a $1,000 flagship phone, Google really isn’t saying much about it. The Pixel 8 Pro announcement mentions it almost in passing:

One of the first known photo fakes, a portrait of Abraham Lincoln , was made just decades after the dawn of photography itself. Since then, photographers have found themselves in endless arguments about what truly constitutes a photo — what’s real, what’s fake, and when is editing too much? Now, as we head into an era where AI-powered tools are everywhere and easily accessible, the discussion is going to be messier than ever. And with the Pixel 8, Google has turned the question of “what is a photo” right on its head.

Google has been leading smartphone photography down this path for many years now. The company pioneered the concept of computational photography, where smartphone cameras do a huge amount of behind-the-scenes processing to spit out a photo that contains more detail than the camera sensor can detect in a single snap. Most modern smartphones use a system like Google’s HDR Plus technology to take a burst of images and combine them into one computationally-created picture, merging highlights, shadows, details, and other data to deliver a more pristine photo. It’s accepted practice at this point, but it also means that a baseline smartphone photo is already more than just “a photo” — it’s many of them, with their best parts combined.

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Google’s latest products are filled with AI. There’s Magic Editor , a photo editing tool powered by generative AI; there’s Conversation Detection , an audio transparency feature powered by AI; there are improved heart rate algorithms , which, yes, are also powered by AI.

Seven years of OS updates? Sounds like a great way to get more AI features from Google . New photography features? All AI . Tensor processor? Designed for AI, baby ! “As always, our focus is on making AI more helpful for everyone, in a way that’s both bold and responsible,” Google’s hardware chief Rick Osterloh said in an introduction that, by my count, included the word “AI” over a dozen times. Over the course of the hour-long launch, Google’s presenters referenced AI over 50 times.

Enterprise IT teams have a few new options for workers with devices running Android 14 , as Google’s blog post mentions a default screen lock PIN that has increased from four to six, the ability for admins to allow only approved credential managers to store login info, the ability to block potentially insecure 2G connections, and logs for ultra wideband.

Now that the new OS has launched along with the Pixel 8 family of devices , Android 14 can make it easier to select certain profiles for certain apps, switch between profiles, and save work-related screenshots directly to the work profile only.

Here’s how Google’s new Pixel 8 phones stack up to the Pixel 7 lineup

In addition to officially rolling out Android 14 , Google introduced the Pixel Watch 2 and a new lineup of phones during its Made by Google Event on Wednesday. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro start at $699 and $999, respectively, and will be available on October 12th.

On the spec front, both phones sport Google’s new Tensor G3 chip, which is an upgrade over the G2 chip that marked Google’s Pixel 7 lineup. Each also comes with a 120Hz max refresh rate and seven years of software support and security updates. The Pro 8 touts a maximum of 1TB of storage as well, along with a new sensor for measuring the temperature of beverages, surfaces, and — perhaps one day — maybe even people.

Here’s how Google’s new Pixel 8 phones compare to their top competitors

Last year’s Pixel 7 phones were an iterative spec bump and nice refinement in the design department (as polarizing as their looks remained), but part of what made those phones special was how much they offered for fairly competitive prices.

Now, Google has announced the $699 Pixel 8 and $999 Pixel 8 Pro (which are $100 price increases over last year’s phones), each due to arrive on October 12th, and once again, they look a lot like a slow burn of subtle hardware improvements — albeit in a slick new light-blue color option on the Pro. But the showstopper feature of the new Pixels may be Google’s software support, as it’s claiming the new phones will see seven whole years of OS and security updates — rivaling Apple’s reign as the longest-lasting phones.

Google announces new colors and features for its Pixel Buds Pro earbuds

Google claims its latest smartphone makes the ‘enhance’ meme a reality.

During an onstage presentation at today’s Pixel 8 Pro launch , Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh showed off how the smartphone is able to retroactively add detail to a photograph when you pinch to zoom in. “So the kind of zoom enhancement you used to see in science fiction? It’s right in the phone in your hand,” Osterloh said after introducing the feature, which Google is calling “Zoom Enhance.”

Osterloh is referring, of course, to the countless sci-fi movies and police procedural shows that have shown characters zooming impossibly far into photos to reveal clues and details that simply could not have been present in the original image. Often, these scenes hinge on “enhancing” unbelievably small reflections, inevitably revealing the identity of a murder suspect.

Google is launching a generative AI-enhanced version of Assistant

During the Made by Google event , where it debuted new Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2 hardware, Google also announced it’s launching Assistant with Bard , which leverages generative AI to provide personalized assistance to users. The company says the new AI-enhanced assistant can do things like help plan your next trip, find details in your email inbox, and even create a grocery list.

Just like Bard on the web, Assistant with Bard will integrate with some of the company’s existing apps, such as Gmail and Docs, to help you find and summarize information. Additionally, you can interact with the tool through text, voice, or images, and it will still retain some of Assistant’s key features that allow you to do things like send a text message.

Google’s latest Pixel launch event has come to an end. Even though some of the products Google revealed were leaked well in advance , the company still managed to throw in a couple of surprises.

Here are all the biggest announcements from the Made by Google event.

Wi-Fi 7 is limited to the US, CA, UK, EU, and AU for now.

For both phones, the “Beyond 24-hour battery life” claim is tested “across a mix of talk, data, standby, and use of other features. Average battery life during testing was approximately 31 hours.”

Our work with Tensor has never been about speeds and feeds, or traditional performance metrics. It’s about pushing the mobile computing experience forward. New advances in speech and language

Now you’ll also be able to talk to Google Assistant more effortlessly. You can speak at your own pace — it even understands pauses and “um”s. We combined Google’s state-of-the-art speech recognition with server-quality natural language understanding.

Pixel 8 is the first phone to use the same text-to-speech model that Google uses in data centers. This allows us to use Pixel to read webpages aloud, and even translate them into a different language.

A major upgrade for your photos and videos

Tensor G3 is all about improving performance while running efficiently. Recording a video is a perfect example of this, where every part of our system on a chip (SOC) is used, and every part benefits from the chip-wide revamp. We’ve optimized the camera pipeline and built machine learning algorithms directly into the silicon, making Live-HDR capable of capturing higher detail, with improved colors, contrast and dynamic range to videos on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Combining all of this with new camera sensors, new machine learning models and new camera software gives you the best video experience ever on a Pixel — all while using less power.

Plus, Tensor G3 continues to deliver major Google innovations in computational photography. What to expect from Google's Pixel 7 event on October 6th

The pixel 7 line and pixel watch are the clear stars of the show..

Google’s fall hardware event promises to be special this year. It not only marks the official debut of the Pixel 7, it will launch the company’s first self-branded smartwatch — the Pixel Watch. But what will those devices bring to the table, exactly? And will there be any surprises beyond that? We’re here to let you know what to expect when Google’s broadcast begins October 6th.

Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro

The meat of the presentation will probably focus on Google’s latest phones, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro . An official preview at this spring’s I/O conference revealed that they’ll largely iterate on the Pixel 6 line. You can expect an updated but familiar-looking design with a seamless aluminum frame that extends to the camera bar. There will also be a new Tensor G2 chip that promises improved performance for media, speech recognition and other tasks. They’ll run Android 13 . The base model will have two rear cameras like the regular Pixel 6, while the Pro adds a third.

But what kind of performance improvements can you expect? Subtle ones, apparently. Prototype leaks hint the standard Pixel 7 will carry 8GB of RAM and start with 128GB of storage, much like its predecessor. A variety of pre-release scoops also suggest the Tensor G2 isn’t a dramatic leap forward, with slight improvements to graphics, power efficiency and clock speeds. Likewise, developer Kuba Wojciechowski claims the cameras will remain largely unchanged. There could be little reason to upgrade from a Pixel 6, then, although this year’s phone may be worth the investment if you’re coming from a Pixel 5 or earlier.

The biggest news might be what doesn’t change: the price. A rumor from Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii maintains that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will respectively start at the same $599 and $899 prices as last year’s phones. They’ll represent significant value for money if the report is true, particularly at a time when many device prices are creeping upwards .

It’s not certain just when the Pixel 7 range will reach customers. Pre-orders will start the day of the event, but Google hasn’t said when the phone will be available. WinFuture ’s Roland Quant has heard the devices will start shipping October 18th, though, so you may only have to wait a couple of weeks before the hardware reaches your hands.

Pixel Watch

The highlight for many, however, will be the Pixel Watch . It’s Google’s first official smartwatch, and promises to serve as a showcase for Wear OS 3. You can expect tight Fitbit integration that includes fitness, sleep and general health tracking. The company is taking some design cues from the Apple Watch with an upscale-looking case, a prominent crown and easily swapped (if proprietary) bands , but it’s using a circular display like many other Wear OS devices.

Google hasn’t shared much about what’s inside, but a prototype left in a restaurant points to heart rate, blood oxygen and ECG monitoring that might be borrowed from the Fitbit Charge 5 . We wouldn’t be surprised to see tap-to-pay Wallet functionality, either. 9to5Google sources believe the Pixel Watch might use a stock Samsung Exynos chip instead of a custom Tensor part, but that it might pack a large 2GB of RAM (even the Galaxy Watch has ‘just’ 1.5GB), 32GB of storage and a coprocessor that keeps battery life in check. Emulator code also points to the introduction of Google’s next-generation Assistant on Wear OS watches, although it’s not known just how the AI helper will evolve on your wrist.

As with the phones, Pixel Watch pre-orders should start October 6th. It’s not yet known if the hardware will ship at the same time as the Pixel 7, though, and established leaker Yogesh Brar warned of a possible “limited release” (that is, only in a few countries). You might have to pay a premium compared to other options, too. A 9to5Google price leak mentioned a $350 starting price, with a cellular version bumping the cost to $400. That’s significantly higher than the $280 Galaxy Watch 5 , and not far behind the $399 Apple Watch Series 8. The Pixel is clearly pitched as Android’s answer to the Apple Watch, and might be priced accordingly.

Wildcards: More Pixel device previews and Nest hardware

There haven’t been solid rumors of additional hardware at the event. Nonetheless, we wouldn’t rule it out. Few would have expected Google to preview the Pixel Tablet long before its 2023 release — it’s no longer out of the question that you might see a teaser for more products. But what, exactly? Besides more details for the tablet, there are longstanding murmurs of a foldable Pixel phone that might get an early peek. With that said, there’s no tangible evidence either Pixel product will make a cameo.

We also wouldn’t count on more Nest devices. Apart from a dearth of leaks, there are only so many things Google can do to upgrade some of its offerings, such as the audio-only Nest Mini and Nest Audio . That said, Google hasn’t touched some of its lineup for two or three years. The company may have an incentive to keep things fresh when Amazon just overhauled its smart home gear .

If there are any surprises, they’re most likely to involve AI-related features. At last year’s event, Google unveiled Pixel-first software tricks that included on-screen call center menus and as-you-type translation . A repeat wouldn’t be surprising this time around, even if some of those extras won’t require a Pixel in the future. Google used AI as a major selling point for the Pixel 6, and the sequel could easily get similar treatment.

Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2 Have Arrived. Here’s What’s New

Google's October hardware event took place this morning in New York City. During its presentation, the company showed off three new pieces of hardware: the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, and the Pixel Watch 2. The new phones are flush with new features, from secure face authentication and seven years of software support to a built-in thermometer, while the second-generation Pixel Watch has more modest improvements over its predecessor . There are also some software upgrades coming to the Pixel Buds Pro , Google's wireless earbuds.

Today's event wasn't just about hardware. Google also unveiled its plans to inject Google Assistant with its Bard large language model, imbuing the voice chatbot with artificial-intelligence-fueled conversational powers. It's year eight for Google's Pixel smartphones , which means the handset line has officially survived longer than Google Reader . (I'm not salty.)

The Pixel 8 is a bit smaller than last year's Pixel 7 , with a 6.2-inch screen; the Pixel 8 Pro retains the 6.7-inch screen size of its predecessor. Both phones have more-rounded edges than before—they mold to my hands quite nicely!—and the Pixel 8 has a matte camera bar with a glossy glass back, whereas the Pro model has a soft-touch matte back glass with a glossy camera bar. Both of the new models have frames crafted out of 100 percent recycled aluminum.

Google's going the Apple route of giving its OLED displays a proprietary name—the Pixel 8 has an “Actua display” and the Pixel 8 Pro has a “Super Actua display.” Like Apple's Liquid Retina Display, the cute name doesn't really mean anything special. What's new, however, is that the Pixel 8 can hit a peak brightness of 2,000 nits in outdoor conditions, 42 percent brighter than last year's Pixel 7. The Pixel 8 Pro pushes this to 2,400 nits. Both phones support a screen refresh rate up to 120-Hz , making the animations on the display look smoother than ever, but only the Pro model has a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide screen, meaning it can dial back the number of frames per second displayed—anywhere from 120 to 1, based on what's happening on the screen—to conserve battery life.

One of the more surprising additions to the Pixel 8 series is support for secure face authentication. If you've been following Pixel hardware over the years, you'll remember that the Pixel 4 was the only one to ever support facial recognition as a secure biometric authentication method, utilizing Google's radar technology . The Pixel 8 series doesn't have the Soli chip that powered that function in the older handset, but these new phones have the same capabilities. This means you can use your face to securely access banking and payment apps, or anything that usually requires a PIN or fingerprint authentication. If you don't like face recognition, both phones still have fingerprint sensors.

You'll be hard-pressed to find this next new feature on another smartphone: a temperature sensor. This is exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro. Google says you're able to measure the temperature of almost anything by pointing the sensor on the back of the Pixel to an object. I measured cups of hot and iced water, and it delivered results quite quickly, though you have to get very close to the thing you want to measure, and you'll get more accurate results if you choose one of the preset options on the material you're trying to read, like glass or ceramic. (Google says these presets help calibrate the sensor.) Theoretically, you can even measure someone's body temperature. Google has submitted the app to the FDA for this purpose, but it hasn't been cleared for such use.

These new phones are powered by Tensor G3, Google's third generation of its custom silicon processor, and the company says “every subsystem has been upgraded,” including the image signal processor to improve the Pixel's picture-taking capabilities. Speaking of, the Pixel 8 has an upgraded 50-megapixel primary camera with what Google claims is a 20 percent improvement in light sensitivity. (More light sensitivity means brighter and sharper photos, especially in low light.) It's joined by a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera that supports macro mode from the Pixel 7 Pro, so you can capture close-ups.

The Pixel 8 Pro has upgraded light-gathering capabilities in all three of its cameras: a 50-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide, and a 48-megapixel telephoto camera with 5X optical zoom. Its macro mode can now get even closer to a subject, and the Pro's autofocus system is now “multi-zone,” allowing for a wider cone of focus in photos. This Pixel also gets an exclusive Pro camera mode that allows shutterbugs to tweak things like ISO and shutter speed while still taking advantage of the Pixel's computational photography.

Both phones have a 10.5-megapixel selfie camera, but I have good news and bad news. There's finally autofocus on the front-facing camera, allowing you to see all your pores in sharp detail. Unfortunately, this is available only on the Pixel 8 Pro. The Pixel 8's front camera has a fixed focus.

There are some new camera software tricks this year. The coolest is Video Boost mode, yet another exclusive for the Pixel 8 Pro. Here, when you take a video in low-light conditions (up to 4K, 30 frames per second), the clip is sent to Google's cloud servers for processing and is then sent back to you—depending on the length of the video, it can take several hours. However, the improvements are startling. Google showed me clips using this mode versus those from the iPhone 14 Pro, and the Pixel's video was much brighter and sharper, with better stabilization.

Magic Editor is a new tool in Google Photos that allows you to edit a photo in a variety of ways. You can change the position of a subject—in a demo, a Google spokesperson moved a kid throwing a basketball from the ground to the hoop, making it look like he was dunking; you can even move shadows, and the software knows to fill in the background with similar textures. Google also showcased changing the lighting of the scene to golden hour, to simulate warm sunset tones. Another capability is Audio Magic Eraser, which can be used to remove unwanted sounds in your videos, such as an ambulance siren going off while you're trying to record a song on your violin. Google's also bringing Real Tone, which enables more accurate skin tones for people of color, to videos. And there's a new tool to change the face of someone in a group photo—maybe they blinked or looked away from the camera—with another one. These features blew me away so much when I was sitting through the demo that I've written about them in greater detail in a separate story .

The camera isn't the only area with new Google smarts. There's a new capability in Google Assistant to summarize pages in Chrome and read them aloud. (It can also translate these pages into other languages.) Google Recorder will soon be able to summarize transcripts too. Gboard can now suggest grammatical changes instead of just autocorrect, and Google's Assistant Voice Typing now supports more languages. Call Screen now lets you respond to people without having to say anything—if a FedEx driver calls to drop off a package, Assistant will let you choose a prompt to respond to leave it at the door if you're unable to take the call, and it will convey that message to the driver. And there's a new Magnifier app! No need to launch the camera to read fine text.

More importantly, Google's Pixel 8 phones will be the first Android devices ever to get an update policy of seven years. Yes, seven years! This update window includes both Android OS enhancements and security updates, beating the rest of the competition. Google is going toe-to-toe with Apple, which usually supports its iPhones for six to seven years.

This software policy is potentially tied to the recent California law that requires companies to provide seven years of documentation, spare parts, and software support for devices that cost more than $100. The problem with software update windows that extend this far is that they leave open the question of whether the devices being supported can survive that long. Google has confirmed that the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will have parts available for the full seven-year support window. We don't yet know how repairable the new Pixel phones are, but we'll talk about that in the product review in the coming weeks.

The Pixel 8 has a 4,485-mAh battery, and the Pixel 8 Pro has a 5,050-mAh cell. Google claims this gives both “beyond 24-hour battery life,” though we'll have to wait and see if that's true. Google says it has upped the fast-charging speed for both phones to 27 and 30 watts, respectively, claiming up to a 50 percent charge in about 30 minutes. Both phones have wireless charging but do not support the upcoming Qi2 protocol , which would have enabled MagSafe-like magnetic charging .

These new Pixel phones are getting a price hike of $100 over last-year's models. The Pixel 8 costs $699 and comes in obsidian, hazel, and rose. The Pixel 8 Pro costs $999 and comes in obsidian, porcelain, and bay. Remember, Google phones frequently go on sale at retailers like Amazon and Target, so I suggest waiting for a sale (like Black Friday). Disappointingly, they both still start with just 128 gigabytes of storage, though the Pixel 8 Pro has a 1-terabyte storage option now.

You can preorder them now, and if you snag the smaller phone, Google is throwing in a free pair of Pixel Buds Pro. If you opt for the Pro Pixel, you'll get a Pixel Watch 2 with your order. They officially go on sale October 12 in 20 countries. Google says it will continue selling the Pixel 7 series until supplies run out.

Last year's Pixel Watch launched with limited features, but Google added new capabilities over the year via software updates. Thankfully, the Pixel Watch 2 now has the full suite of smartwatch features out of the box, with some small upgrades. It looks the same; it still has the domed glass design, though there's a slightly redesigned haptic crown that more finely gives you feedback as you use it to scroll the interface. There are two new strap styles (still utilizing the proprietary strap), and six new watch face families.

One big hardware change is the material the Pixel Watch 2 case is made from—100 percent recycled aluminum. Gone is the stainless steel, which was more durable and scratch-resistant. Google says it made this change to make the watch 10 percent lighter and thereby more comfortable. Sadly, this doesn't make the watch less expensive, even though aluminum is the cheaper material.

Bizarrely, Google has decided to change the charger. A new contact charger can now recharge the Pixel Watch 2 faster than before, giving it about 50 percent juice in 30 minutes or less. This means the first-gen Pixel Watch's charger will not be compatible with the new smartwatch, and vice versa. Talk about e-waste! Google has yet to announce any kind of accessory that can charge your Pixel Buds, Pixel phone, and Pixel Watch simultaneously, though there are dozens of these 3-in-1 chargers for Apple's ecosystem .

The Pixel Watch 2 skips out on a Samsung processor in favor of Qualcomm's Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 , which the company says enables much faster performance overall, so you won't see stutters on the interface that pop in here and there on the first-gen model. It runs the new Wear 4 operating system, which first debuted on the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 . New features include a Gmail and Google Calendar app, the ability to have Google Assistant fetch your health data ("How did I sleep last night?"), and support for backup and restore so you won't have to reset the watch when you switch phones.

The most notable new software feature falls under the Personal Safety umbrella. That includes emergency location sharing with your medical ID and Safety Check. The latter turns on a timer and, if it runs out with no action on your part, your emergency contact will be notified with your real-time location. There's also Safety Signal, which is only on the cellular version of the Pixel Watch 2. If you haven't signed up for cellular connectivity on the watch, these safety features will still work even when the watch is not connected to a smartphone. The catch? You need to activate it first, and you'll need to have a Fitbit Premium subscription.

On the fitness side of things, Google says it has a new multi-path heart rate sensor that offers more photodiodes to pick up more accurate heart rate measurements. Specifically, the Pixel Watch 2 is now 40 percent more accurate when measuring heart rate during vigorous activities, Google claims. There's also auto start and stop for seven workouts, plus pace coaching and heart rate zone coaching that lets you target a zone you want to stay in, and it'll coach you via voice and haptic alerts. The workout screen has been tweaked to show more relevant information at a glance.

Finally, there are two new sensors: a skin temperature sensor and a continuous electrodermal activity sensor. The former acts as part of the sleep tracking system and can show you if your temperature changes over time, which might indicate changes to your environment. Google says it's not being used to track menstruation. The latter works with the skin temperature sensor to track microscopic sweat beads and can detect physiological stress (or excitement!). You can log your mood when it detects these changes and can even offer ways to cope with stress, like taking a walk or doing some guided breathing exercises.

Google has previously stated that it can't repair the first-gen Pixel Watch . People running into performance issues with the wearable can file a claim with Google's support team to get a replacement model. This is unfortunately still the case with the Pixel Watch 2, and it's unclear for how long this will be, as new right-to-repair laws mandating access to spare parts proliferate beyond states like California and New York, where they already exist. Google says it's adding Preferred Care for the second-gen watch in the US and Canada, but it's perplexing that a company the size of Google can't figure this out.

The Pixel Watch 2 costs $349 for the base model and $399 for the model with cellular connectivity. Each watch comes with six months of Fitbit Premium. The models are available for preorder now with a launch date of October 12.

Google's flagship wireless earbuds are now available in two extra colors: bay and porcelain. But that's not all that's new. They now support Bluetooth Super Wideband, which purportedly doubles the bandwidth for voices, meaning you should sound clearer during phone and video calls. They also support the Pixel phones' Clear Calling feature, which reduces background sounds.

The Pixel Buds app (which is now also available for Chromebooks) will now tell you how loudly you've been listening to music, which is probably too loud for me, but it's meant to help you be aware of safe hearing levels. There's now a Conversation Detection mode just like what's offered by competing earbuds, which understands when you've started speaking. It will pause your music and switch to Transparency mode so you can hear more of your surroundings, as well as your own voice. When the convo ends, it'll switch back to Active Noise Cancellation (if you had it turned on).

There's also a new low-latency gaming mode when you launch a “compatible” game on a Pixel phone, cutting latency in half so you can hear the footsteps of your enemies a little more quickly.

Google pixel 8, google announces october 4 event for pixel 8 and pixel watch 2.

Google this morning announced that its annual Pixel hardware event will be on Wednesday, October 4.

Like last year, the event is taking place in New York City. The “Made by Google event” and keynote will be at 10 a.m. ET. Google will livestream the October 4 Pixel event on YouTube and the Google Store website.

The event itself is being announced just over a month before it takes place. (It also comes 24 hours after Apple shared its iPhone 15 event.) In 2022 , Google waited until the one-month mark before sending out invites, though that would fall on a holiday (Labor Day) next week.

Google I/O 2024 Live Blog: Gemini AI Features Are Coming to Many Apps

Google's Gemini AI is becoming a key feature in many popular Google apps, including Gmail, Meet and the upcoming Project Astra camera tool.

Gemini AI was the headline feature during the first day of Google I/O 2024.

Google I/O 2024 , the company's annual developer conference, kicked off Tuesday. Google's  Gemini AI  and its new integrations into applications like Gmail and Meet led off the conference, along with a look at Google's Astra project, which uses a camera to provide AI analysis. 

Gemini was Google's big push on the first day of I/O, with the company teasing that more Android 15 updates will be coming later . Gemini will certainly be a part of Android, with Google teasing its use as an assistant as well as an organizer.

Google has wrapped up its AI-heavy Google IO keynote presentation. In case you were wondering, Sundar Pichai revealed that Google mentioned AI 121 times today. That's a decline from the 140-plus times it mentioned AI during last year's I/O . 

At last, responsible AI -- but no training acknowledgment

Nearly two hours into Google I/O, Google offered up a segment on how it's responsibly using and training AI -- better late than never. It's actually using AI to train AI, in a process called Red Teaming. Google is also calling out the possibility that Imagen and other tools could be used to spread misinformation. It's spreading its SynthID watermarking capability to multimodality text and generated video, and will open-source SynthID. On top of that, Google will soon release a Responsible Generative AI toolkit for developers to "build AI responsibly."

Yet the company didn't touch on what data its Gemini tools -- which most of Google's AI products use today -- are trained on. Google's responsibility is focused on what's created using its tools, not what creations are used by its tools.

Gemini listening in to warn you about scams

A new feature that's in testing uses Gemini to warn you about potential scam calls. On stage, Google showed how it listens in to your calls. In the demo, when the caller asked to shadily transfer money to a new account, an alert popped up on screen that the call was likely a scam. Given that analysis stays on the device, it's more secure, and could protect people when scammers use phishing tactics like scaring and pressuring them to choose quickly. This builds on Google I/O presentations of yesteryear of tech that acts like a concierge to screen calls and make restaurant reservations. 

Android 15 updates are coming tomorrow

Looking for what'll be new in Android 15? That won't be coming today. Despite all the Gemini-in-Android talk during the keynote presentation, Android 15 is still coming and Google will indeed talk about it at IO -- just not today. Google will instead be detailing its next update for its mobile software tomorrow. Stay tuned.

There's a new Slackbot in town. The Gemini-powered "virtual teammate," called Chip, can be integrated into your work chat to check on things and surface topics buried in months and years of conversations. On stage, Google demonstrated how someone asked Chip about the progress of a work project, and the chatbot found who talked about it last and intuited its status. This could be helpful, as work chat search functions are iffy at best. Let's just hope it doesn't hallucinate that you were responsible for a task that hadn't actually been assigned... and then go tell your boss.

Google Gemini gets smarter in Android

Google announced an upgrade to its Gemini virtual assistant at Google I/O.

There's a lot of Gemini news at Google I/O, and that includes how its presence on Android will change. Gemini will be able to understand more context about the app you're using, meaning it can answer questions about the video you're watching on YouTube or generate images that can be dragged and dropped directly into Google Messages or Gmail. It's a sign that Google wants AI to play a bigger role in Android. 

Until this point, a lot of the generative AI features we've seen on phones have been targeted at very specific tasks, like editing an image or translating a conversation. But this Gemini update points to a future in which AI changes the way we use our phones on a more fundamental level. Read more about it in my full story . 

Gemini is boosting accessibility features

Google is using AI to offer richer image descriptions in its TalkBack screen reader.

Google will leverage Gemini Nano to bring richer and clearer image descriptions to its TalkBack screen reader . TalkBack reads aloud what's on a screen and helps blind and low-vision users navigate their devices using custom gestures and voice commands. Now Gemini can offer more details about what's being shown in an image or an online product listing. In a blog post, Google shared an example showing a dress, for which TalkBack generated the description, "A close-up of a black and white gingham dress. The dress is short, with a collar and long sleeves. It is tied at the waist with a big bow."

Google Gemini is now very conversational. With Gemini Live, you can have a natural-sounding conversation with Gemini, even interrupting it midsentence. Google says Gemini will also be more capable, allowing users to post massive amounts of text for analysis. You can read my full story about a wide range of Gemini announcements .

Dude, where's my responsible AI?

Forty-five minutes in and we've heard "AI" dozens of times, but there's been nary a mention of how Google is building these tools and models responsibly. Where will the new tool Veo source the material it's basing new generated videos on? What about the audio tools? And how will the artists who made the content that's fed into models be compensated? Full details can wait until after the keynote presentation, but it's telling that Google hasn't even had a throwaway line about using AI responsibly.

Project Astra is Google's Gemini answer to ChatGPT

OpenAI's ChatGPT-4o made waves on Monday for its AI assistant that seemed to eerily mimic Scarlett Johansson in the movie Her. Google's latest update to its Project Astra appears to be its answer for a multimodal version of Gemini that can be helpful. In a demo video, the company shows the AI recognizing content in a video and accurately answering questions and identifying subjects. 

Google says the Gemini app will be getting some of these experiences later this year.

We knew Google was going to lean into AI at I/O, but we're minutes into the keynote presentation and its generative AI tool Gemini has been demonstrated to give nuanced and context-sensitive responses to everything from searches to responding to questions so naturally it looks like a conversation. From here, everything we see today could have AI involved in the output.

CEO Sundar Pichai has hit the stage and Google I/O is officially underway. Pichai describes I/O as "Google's version of the Eras Tour" and says the company is now in its "Gemini Era." Get ready for a lot of AI talk.

Don't buy a Pixel 7A before Google I/O

Google announced the Pixel 8A last week, a follow-up to last year's Pixel 7A. But there's a problem. The Pixel 8A costs $499 and Google still sells the 1-year-old Pixel 7A for $499. Please don't buy a Pixel 7A unless it's discounted. My guess is that Google will eventually drop the price of the Pixel 7A -- either during Google I/O this week or when the Pixel 8A is available in stores. But if you were planning on dropping $500 on a Pixel 7A and didn't know about the Pixel 8A, then congrats: You got an easy upgrade to something newer and shinier without having to spend a penny more.

Will Google tease the Pixel 9?

The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro appear to have leaked. 

Google hasn't gone big on new hardware at IO in recent years, but it does occasionally use its flagship developer conference to tease its hardware plans more officially . Google's Pixel division is notorious for leaks, and just the other day hands-on images and details of what appears to be the forthcoming Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL appeared on Russian website Rozetked . According to the outlet the Pixel 9 will sport a 6.24-inch display, the 9 Pro will bump that to 6.34-inches and the 9 Pro XL will jump up to 6.73-inches. All three will be AMOLED displays and support 120Hz refresh rates, as well as rock some new rear camera designs.

Will Google make the phones official on Tuesday? We'll find out soon enough.

Pixel Tablet: 1 year later

It's been a year since Google I/O 2023 and the debut of the  Pixel Tablet , a digital slate that, with its quad-speaker charging dock, is intended to cater to folks who want something more advanced than an Echo Show in their home. We gave the tablet top marks, and though there's been no hint that Google will follow up with another tablet at Google I/O 2024, perhaps there's a software update in store.

Using AI to boost digital accessibility

Google could use the week of I/O to unveil some digital accessibility updates, since Global Accessibility Awareness Day this year falls two days later, on May 16. The company has recently rolled out features like Guided Frame , which helps blind and low-vision Pixel users take selfies. It's also launched apps like Magnifier , which makes it easier to see small text and objects, and added AI image descriptions to its Lookout app, which helps people who are blind or low-vision identify objects and read documents. It's likely Google will continue to use AI to boost digital accessibility across more products and services, showcasing the "good" the rapidly developing tech can usher in.

Wear OS 5 coming? But we might not hear about it at Google I/O

While the 2021 release of Wear OS 3 -- a combined effort between Google and Samsung -- promised a new era for non-Apple smartwatches, updates have been somewhat sparse with Wear OS 4 coming last year alongside the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 featuring a handful of improvements. But a rumor says that the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7's chip is running software referred to as Wear OS 5, according to 9to5Google . It's unclear if it'll properly debut at Google I/O 2024, as Google sometimes waits to reveal Wear OS news until the smartwatches running them debut.

Android 15: What's in store?

At Google I/O 2024, we expect to see a lot more about Android 15 , the next big software update for Android phones. It's already available for developers and early adopters with Pixel phones to try out in beta, and we've seen its improvements on productivity, privacy and security, including archiving apps to free up space on your phone and more support for satellite connectivity. Google I/O is when we'll hear about many other ways the Android experience will change.

Gemini in focus at I/O

Google has invested heavily in Gemini, its generative AI platform -- and it will hardly be surprising if Gemini features in a big way at Google I/O. Google could even go as far as showing off an entirely new version of Gemini. The search giant will seek to prove its superiority over competitors like Microsoft and OpenAI, which on Monday unveiled a major update to GPT-4 that it showed can detect human emotion and also offer information in real time. But if a brand new Gemini doesn't make a debut at I/O, at the very least we can probably expect some generative AI updates for major Google products such as Android, Maps or Search.

Pixel hardware not likely

Software is usually the focus of Google I/O, but Google surprised us with a few hardware teases in recent years, such as the Pixel Fold last year and the Pixel Watch in 2022. But given the company's laser focus on AI over the past year, I'd be surprised if it carved out time for new hardware announcements, especially since it introduced the Pixel 8A just before I/O. Instead, we'll probably hear more about AI updates to services like Search, Maps, Gmail, Docs and the Gemini virtual assistant. Google usually saves major Pixel product announcements for the fall.

More AI on Android phones

Last year, Google provided a glimpse into how generative AI could surface on Android phones by announcing features such as Magic Compose (for rewriting text messages in a different tone) and AI wallpapers. A lot has changed since then; from Circle to Search to new translation features and photo editing tools like Magic Editor , our phones have gotten a big dose of AI over the past year. I wonder if Google will introduce new features, or perhaps announce expansions for current tools like Circle to Search

Google Assistant's future

Google Assistant was noticeably absent from last year's Google I/O, which I found odd , considering so much of the event was focused on AI. In 2024, Google has seemingly been focusing its resources on its new Gemini assistant, which makes me wonder whether it will eventually phase out Assistant altogether. Either way, I'll be looking for clues about Google Assistant's future based on how the company positions it – or ignores it – at Google I/O. 

Will we see a Pixel Tablet 2?

There's a USB-C port on the Pixel Tablet, even though the dock charges with its own proprietary plug and pin connector.

Google's affordable-ish Pixel Tablet , which debuted at last year's Google I/O, was the company's return to the large-screen format. After ceding ground to Apple's iPad, Samsung was largely holding down the premium Android tablet fort, doing the best it could without Google's full support. But Google's re-entry to the tablet market put some much needed fuel in Android's smoldering tablet ecosystem. Now, ideally, Google would want to keep that momentum going with a followup to last year's Pixel Tablet with a Pixel Tablet 2, right? It does seem, however, that we won't be seeing a new Pixel Tablet at I/O this year. 

Ahead of the Pixel Tablet's launch last year, there was a steady stream of rumors flowing into the mouths of Android's acolytes. Leak upon leak all but suggested a tablet was on its way. However, there hasn't been nearly the same flood of rumors for the Pixel Tablet 2 as there was for the first. Other than a codename mentioned in a beta Android 14 update, we haven't seen any design leaks or third-party case designs hit the web. I've used Google's $499 Pixel 8a for a week. Here's my buying advice for 2024

I've been daily-driving the Google Pixel 8a for a little over a week now, and it's probably the most confusingly good Pixel phone I've ever tested.

In a vacuum, the Google Pixel 8a is the best phone you can buy for less than $500. It nails the essentials with a smooth-looking, brighter-than-ever display, a camera system that'll best any Samsung Galaxy A-series device or iPhone SE, and an Android operating system that will give and give for another seven years. If you're in desperate need of a new phone -- emphasis on "desperate need" -- this may well be the last stop of your shopping journey.

That's because if time is not of the essence, you'll face the dilemma that many other potential Pixel 8a buyers confront: Google's frequent discounts on older but more capable models. This applies to all manufacturers and other product categories, of course, but it's especially notable with Google's Pixel line of phones.

Take last year's Google Pixel 8 , for example, which retailed for $699 and dropped to $549 just one month after launch. In April, major retailers, including the Google Store,  sold it for $499 , the same price as the new Pixel 8a. Spec-for-spec, the Pixel 8 is the superior device in every way, from the display and build quality to the camera system (remember: more megapixels do not always mean better picture quality).

Naturally, since launching the Pixel 8a, Google has pulled back promotions of its flagship models, rendering such a comparison less relevant. With major commerce events on the horizon, including Amazon Prime Day , here's my buying advice after having tested both phones and covered several sales events in the past.

When Google does run promotions on its Pixel phones, expect the company to maintain at least a $100 price gap between the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8a. That means if the Pixel 8 drops to $549, the Pixel 8a will likely be priced at $449. If the Pixel 8 drops to $499, the Pixel 8a will be sold for $399. Google had a similar pricing strategy with last year's Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the company repeat its approach in 2024.

Is the older Pixel 8 worth the $100+ price difference? From my experience, I'd take the cheaper Pixel 8a, and here's why:

• With the same camera lenses available, I've found the output from both the wide and ultrawide cameras nearly indistinguishable between the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a. (It reminds me of Marques Brownlee's latest Blind Smartphone Camera Test , which saw the Pixel 7a beating out the Pixel 8 Pro.) The only time I've noticed a difference between the two camera systems is in low-light environments, with the Pixel 8 capturing details in darker spots better -- but by a small margin.
• While the Pixel 8a has a less shatterproof Corning Gorilla Glass 3 layering, it's naturally more scratch-resistant. I don't often drop or damage my phones, but I do get an awful lot of micro-scratches from taking them in and out of my pockets and bags, and daily use.
• The roughly eight-month gap between releases means the Pixel 8a should receive operating system, Pixel Feature drops, and security patches for longer than the Pixel 8.

ZDNET's buying advice

No matter which of the two phones you buy, you'll be armed with a Pixel device that should last you for years to come. Buy the Pixel 8a if you're on a budget and don't want to bet on Google (or another manufacturer) to discount its older models significantly. So long as the Pixel 8a and Pixel 8 are separated by at least $100, I'd always recommend the former.

If the Pixel 8 is ever priced the same as the Pixel 8a, there's more to gain with the older but still capable Google phone.

Google Pixel smartphones offer one of the best Android experiences on the market. The company has even expanded its lineup to cater to different segments — midrange with the Pixel A series, mid-range to high-end with the standard Pixel, top-end with the Pro flagship, and even the foldable market with the Pixel Fold . However, it seems Google is struggling to keep up with competitors. According to a new report from Canalys (via GizChina ), Google’s smartphone shipments reportedly decreased between the end of 2023 and Q1 2024.

Google's inconsistent Pixel experience makes its phones impossible to recommend

According to the report, based on Tensor chip shipments in smartphones, Google Pixel shipments were around 2 million units in Q1 2024. While this is not much of a drop compared to the same quarter last year, it is a significant 33% decrease from Q4 2023, where Google shipped nearly 3 million units. But this isn't the first time we're hearing about declining Pixel sales. A report earlier this month indicated that Google Pixel captured only 2% of US smartphone shipments in Q1 2024.

For comparison, both MediaTek and Qualcomm saw increases in shipments in Q1 2024 year-on-year, gaining 17% and 11%, respectively. However, like Google, both Apple and Samsung saw decreases in shipments by 16% and 18% respectively. Interestingly, despite a ban on using American technologies, Chinese manufacturer HUAWEI managed to grow its market share, shipping 8 million phones powered by its Kirin chips in Q1 2024 — nearly four times Google's Pixel sales in the same period.

You shouldn't worry about it just yet

With sales and shipments decreasing, is it really a concern? Not necessarily. According to the same report, the overall revenue from Pixel sales increased by 36% year-on-year in Q1 2024, which basically means that while Google sold fewer Pixel phones, it generated significantly more revenue from each sale. This could indicate that people are more interested in higher-end models like the Pixel 8 Pro than lower-end ones like the Pixel 8a , but I might be jumping the gun here as we don't have enough data to confirm.

Despite shipping fewer Pixel devices in Q1 2024, Google is not slowing down expanding the Pixel ecosystem. The company has a range of products, from the Pixel Watch 3 to the Pixel Fold 2 , and more are in the pipeline for this year. In fact, Google plans to expand its Pixel 9 flagship series to three models, with a new Pixel 9 Pro XL rumored to debut this fall. This could drive up average selling prices and further boost revenue for Google.

• What is it? The HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra is the latest premium flagship phone from one of China's favorite brands. It's the successor to the P60 Pro but with a few key changes, namely in the camera and chipset departments, to go along with the slightly revamped name.
• What is the price? The HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra isn't available in the US (or the UK currently) but costs €1,499 (~$1,621) in select EU markets.
• Where can you buy it? HUAWEI sells the Pura 70 Ultra directly from its website in available regions. The phone is also available on Amazon.
• How did we test it? I tested the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra for five days. The review unit was supplied by HUAWEI.
• Is it worth it? HUAWEI continues to fight through the US trade sanctions, but the Pura 70 Ultra is a symptom of a losing battle. While the phone's reliable camera package will keep series fans happy, it's impossible to recommend a €1,499 phone that lacks 5G, flagship processing power, or a long-term update commitment to anyone else. Spend your money elsewhere.

Should you buy the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra?

If you’re contemplating a modern HUAWEI smartphone, you hopefully know what you’re getting into by now. The ongoing US trade embargo means that Google apps remain a no-go (without workarounds), which might suit some people. However, swapping Big G for HUAWEI isn’t exactly a privacy-conscious move. In global markets, the Pura 70 Ultra still runs EMUI (based on the increasingly outdated Android 12) rather than HUAWEI’s Harmony OS spin-off, which you’ll find in China.

If you’ve used a P series flagship — now rebranded to Pura — in recent years, you’ll be instantly familiar with the heavily iOS-inspired skin, unholy level of bloatware, and various Google-app replacements. I could install a good portion of my regularly used Android apps , but certainly not all of them. For example, the ecosystem split means that I couldn’t use any of my banking apps on the phone for a start. I suspect this, paired with the lack of 5G network support, is why HUAWEI isn’t selling the phone in the UK this time around. I also experienced far more app crashes than on this phone’s predecessor, the HUAWEI P60 Pro , but such is the risk with relying on APK installs.

Despite the name change, the Pura 70 Ultra carries a now signature HUAWEI design. The even larger camera housing signifies the phone’s biggest strength, but the glossy finish on the black colorway is an absolute dust magnet. Thankfully, the textured back is grippy and finished with faux leather. Combined with curved glass protected by HUAWEI’s Crystal Kunlun Armor, this design is bound to split the crowd. I’m not super hot on it, but it’s the least of my concerns about this phone.

The US-trade embargo hasn’t just impacted HUAWEI’s software; the brand can’t use US-backed silicon either, leaving it with some interesting compromises in the processor department. The HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra is powered by its in-house Kirin 9010 processor. Sporting four custom Taishan CPU cores and four Arm A510s, the chip provides a low-end performance point that’s bested even by affordable smartphones like the Nothing Phone 2 and is a notable downgrade on the P60 Pro’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Despite a revamped large CPU core from the Kirin 9000S, GeekBench 6 single-core results are well behind the Arm Cortex-X sporting competition. Furthermore, the SoC’s eight CPU cores score nowhere close to industry-leading chipsets.

Graphics performance is no better. HUAWEI’s custom Maleoon 910 GPU again scores well below rivals. Stress test temperatures hit an uncomfortable-to-hold 47.0°C, though the phone is reasonably stable compared to rival handsets. I booted up Genshin Impact and was greeted with 30-fps, medium graphics as the preset option. It didn’t take long for the phone to warm up, and cranking the settings up to high (let alone highest) caused noticeable splutters. This isn’t a phone for the serious mobile gamer.

While the Kirin 9010 will handle your daily tasks fine (HUAWEI has done a solid job optimizing the UI), the phone is well behind rivals regarding power-user and gaming capabilities. Heat is an issue regardless; I struggled to cool the phone below 30°C, even with long rest periods. Excess heat negatively impacts charging power; the phone heavily throttles back from its 90W peak level to just 18W when temperatures reach 40°C. This makes it impossible to predict how quickly the phone will have you back on your feet, especially if you’ve been using it for moderate tasks beforehand. On average, charging the phone consumes 39W and takes about 46 minutes when left alone, which is still pretty quick.

Photography has historically been the foundation of a great HUAWEI handset, and the Pura 70 Ultra updates its successful camera phone formula with a 1-inch primary sensor paired with an f/1.6-f/4.0 aperture and retractable lens. The retractable lens keeps the phone reasonably thin while providing sufficient distance between the lens and sensor for a conventional 23mm focal length. As you would expect, this large image sensor produces very good snaps in both strong HDR and dimly lit environments. In fact, the level of detail captured with very little light is perhaps the most impressive thing about this camera.

Speaking of details, they are a little soft, but this more natural look is preferable to oversharpening. I’m less convinced by HUAWEI’s color science; rather than “boring” realism, the phone leans into a more vivid presentation. It doesn’t pop aggressively, but the adjustment is nowhere near interesting enough to be considered a creative color profile. Think Instagram- rather than frame-worthy.

The primary lens is solid, but the 13mm ultrawide, upgraded to a 40MP sensor, is a little too distorted for my tastes. Photo edges suffer from smear and aberration, and there’s not even a lot of detail in the frame’s center, either, and this only gets worse in dim lighting. I don’t really like ultrawide cameras anyway, but this feels like a low-effort implementation for an ultra-premium phone.

By contrast, the 90mm 3.5x lens is my favorite for framing, but I’m again disappointed in the softness. Detail capture seems heavily reliant on HUAWEI’s image refinement algorithms, which take a long time to process on the sluggish processor. Sadly, the focal length is too long for portraits, so the Pura 70 Ultra defaults to the primary, which has an equally non-ideal 23mm focal length. Of the two, I prefer the look of flipping to the 3.5x lens for natural bokeh, but the lens doesn’t provide the same robust dynamic range in indoor lighting conditions. The telephoto camera holds up OK at 10x in good lighting, with image quality roughly on par with the Pixel 8 Pro ‘s long-range zoom. Don’t push the camera further; the results quickly deteriorate.

XMAGE continues to be the real star, combining and refining image data to produce levels of detail and HDR that are as good as any other on the market. The phone seldom hands in a poorly exposed image, blends detail for “super macro” very well, and packs plenty of software tweaks to help customize your portraits. However, I don’t find HUAWEI color science as exciting or interesting as OPPO or Xiaomi’s, and the phone’s over-saturation leaves a lot to be desired for realistic skin tones. There are other issues here, too. Portrait edge detection on selfies is below par, often missing or blurring hair far more than competitor devices. However, the rear camera’s edge detection is very good. Looking at the big picture, this is a fine camera phone, but it feels like HUAWEI’s technology has hit a plateau and the competition has quickly closed the gap.

Overall, the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra is a barely passable smartphone that’s elevated by one of the better camera experiences money can buy. Even so, the broader package is certainly not a flagship-tier product that can command a €1,499 tag. A mid-range processor, an outdated version of Android with no prospect of long-term OS updates , no global 5G bands, and a lack of cutting-edge AI features surely means this phone shouldn’t be considered in the same breath as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or Xiaomi 14 Ultra — two phones that cost just as much and do virtually everything better. As someone who loved the early P-series, I’m disappointed with my time with the Pura 70 Ultra and find it hard to recommend to anyone except the few remaining HUAWEI faithful.

€1,499 is a fair chunk of change for any flagship smartphone, and this price tag puts the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra firmly up against the best in the business. Lack of Google apps aside, here’s how HUAWEI’s phone stacks up against its rivals.

• Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra ( $1419.99 at Amazon ): Starting at a very similar €1,449 in Europe, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra is the premium Android phone to beat for all-round specs. Boasting a far faster processor, seven years of update support, and Galaxy AI to elevate your software experience. HUAWEI’s phone charges faster and the camera has a few neat extras, but that’s about all the praise I can offer.
• Xiaomi 14 Ultra ( $989 at Giztop ): If you’re looking for a photography-focused flagship, you can’t beat the hugely impressive Xiaomi 14 Ultra . It’s the best camera phone I’ve used this year, yet it also houses a powerhouse chipset and charges as fast as you’ll ever need. It’ll also set you back £1,299 / €1,499, the same as the latest HUAWEI. Honestly, get this one instead.
• Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max ( $1199 at Amazon ): If you’re happy stepping outside the Android ecosystem, top-dollar pricing nets you Apple’s top-tier iPhone 15 Pro Max . The cameras and charging capabilities are definitely inferior to the Pura 70 Ultra, but iOS provides a robust app ecosystem, years of updates, and the Max is a superbly built handset.
• Google Pixel 8 Pro ( $999 at Amazon ): Google’s Pixel 8 Pro is always in the mix when talking about the best camera phones. If you can live with the slower charging and equally mid-range performance metrics as the Pura, you can have all the benefits of Google’s ecosystem and long-term updates for a fraction of the price HUAWEI charges.

Saturday Night Live , which just wrapped its 49th season last weekend, has already gotten a head start on sponsorships for its golden anniversary.

NBCUniversal said Tuesday it has locked Allstate, L’Oreal Groupe, T-Mobile, and Volkswagen of America as sponsors of the show’s 50th season. The milestone will be highlighted by a primetime special on Sunday, February 16. T-Mobile, which has sponsored the past two seasons of the series, is going to expand that relationship next season.
