Related guidance

This page provides an overview of how to create a Moodle Assignment where students submit in groups and where a Similarity Report is generated. When using group assignments you need to set up and apply groupings in addition to groups. This is because group submissions can disappear if groups are used and a student is in one group and is subsequently added to another group.

Review the Get started - Group assignment guidance before you start. This assignment type is more complex than other assignment activities.

Limitations

Turnitin does not support group marking. You must use Moodle's grading mechanisms to provide grades and feedback.

Settings not enabled

  • Anonymous submissions are not enabled.

If you are familiar with the assignment set up, you will only need to review:

  • Group assignment settings.

Confidential submissions

Student submissions may contain confidential material. These could include:

  • Commercially sensitive material
  • Contact details such as telephone numbers or addresses
  • Personal details that could identify an anonymous participant

If submissions contain confidential material, they must not be stored on Turnitin's repository as they would then be included in future similarity searches. To exclude confidential submission from future searches, under the setting Store Student Papers select No Repository .

For confidential submissions, once the assessment process is completed and you have downloaded and securely saved a copy of the confidential submission, feedback and grade -  you can remove the paper from the Turnitin submission inbox . Please note that as the paper was not saved in the Repository it is not recoverable after it is removed.

Screencast: Create group assignment with Similarity Report

This screencast demonstrates how to create a group assignment with Similarity Report in Moodle 3.9.

  • Turn Edit Mode on.
  • Open the relevant section. Select Add an activity or resource . Select Assignment from the Activities tab.
  • In the General settings, write a meaningful Assignment name . This is the name that will be displayed on the module page and also in the gradebook.
  • In  Description , provide clear instructions to your students about the assignment. Consider adding a link to the student educational technology guidance.
  • Check Display Description on module page  to display the description beneath the assignment activity on the module page. If unchecked, the Description will only display when a student opens the assignment.
  • Do not use  Activity Instructions , as these will   only display to students  after  they have opened the assignment (usually at the point of submission). This setting should only be used for timed Moodle assignments.
  • If required, in Additional files , upload any files you would like to attach to this assignment (e.g. assignment cover sheet or example submissions). Download links for the files will be displayed on the assignment page under the Description.
  • Moodle guidance for students
  • In the Availability section, set the Allow submissions from date to indicate from when students will be able to submit their coursework. This is enabled by default.
  • Set the Due date to match the assignment deadline. This date displays on the module page it is added to the Moodle Calendar and the students' Timeline block.
  • Check the box next to Enable to set a Cut-off date . This is the final date and time when coursework can be submitted. Any submissions added after the Due date will be marked as late. Once the Cut-off date has passed, the submit button will not display on the assignment.
  • Disable or update the  Remind me to grade by date. This appears in Timeline and Upcoming events block for staff enrolled on a module to remind them of grading deadlines.
  • Do not use Time Limit . This feature is for setting timed assignments.
  • In Submission types , select the box to indicate if the submission will be online text or whether students will upload one or more files.
  • If Online text submissions are enabled, students type rich text directly into an editor field for their submission. Markers can comment on, and edit students' text directly. Tick the Enable box to set a word limit. Set the maximum number of words that each student will be allowed to submit.
  • Note: This is also the maximum number of feedback files that you can attach to each individual student when providing feedback. For example, if you want a student to submit one file but want to upload two feedback files then select three files.
  • The maximum submission size defaults to the maximum upload limit for Moodle of 400MB . This default can be decreased if required.  Please note: If you have Turnitin enabled on Moodle assignments that Turnitin's upload limit is 100MB .
  • The lecturer can specify the types of file the students may upload to the assignment. The file types may be added with their file extension, such as .png and mp3, or else as image/png and audio/mp3.
  • Accepted file types can be restricted by entering a semicolon-separated list of mimetypes, for example: 'video/mp4; audio/mp3; image/png; image/jpeg'. You may also limit to extensions by including the dot, for example '.png; .jpg'.
  • If the file types have been restricted, then when students attempt to submit the assignment, they will see a message telling them which files are accepted.
  • Leaving the field blank will allow all file types.

If an assignment is set to  allow any file type , Turnitin will accept a limited number of file types that are:

  • smaller than 100MB; even if the Moodle assignment is set up to accept files of 400MB
  • have a minimum of 20 words; and
  • fewer than 800 pages.

However, Feedback Studio cannot generate a Similarity Report for all file types so check Turnitin's accepted file types .

Feedback types controls how you can provide feedback. In most cases, you will not need to change these settings unless you have an online text submission. Set Comment inline to Yes for online text submissions.

moodle turnitin group assignment

  • Set Require students to click the submit button to Yes if you want the option to Require all group members to submit from the Group assignment settings.
  • The setting Require that students accept the submission statement is enabled by default on assignments. Do not change this setting as it is important that students understand what is required of them in regards to academic integrity prior to submitting an assignment.

  • When a student who is not in a group attempts to submit Moodle will display a message You're not a member of any group; please contact your lecturer . The student will not be able to submit the assignment.
  • If Yes is selected, then the assignment will not be classed as submitted until all members of the group have clicked the Submit assignment button.
  • This setting becomes selectable if you set  Require students to click the submit button  to  Yes  under the Submission settings.
  • Select a Grouping in the  Grouping for student groups  drop-down menu.

moodle turnitin group assignment

  • To allow students to view their Similarity Report, change the Display Similarity Reports to Students to Yes .
  • Change Allow submission of any file type? to Yes if students are required to submit a variety of file types. Not all file types will generate a Similarity Report.
  • The default option is  Standard Repository  which is suitable for most submissions.
  • No Repository  can be chosen for formative submissions or for a confidential projects/commercially sensitive dissertations which should not be included in future similarity searches. For confidential submissions, once the assessment process is completed and you have downloaded and saved a copy of the confidential submission, you can log a ticket on IT Self Service Portal to request that the assignment is removed from Turnitin. Please quote the Turnitin ID number in your request.
  • Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until the due date, After 3 submission, reports generate after 24 hours). Similarity Reports for the initial submission by each student are generated immediately. Students may resubmit as often as they wish until the Due date. Similarity Reports for the third or subsequent submission will require 24 hours before processing. Only the latest submission is available to the lecturer or student. Previous versions are removed. Student submissions will be compared against their peers submissions within the assignment on the Due date, which may then result in a change in the similarity index.
  • Generate reports on due date (students can resubmit until due date): Similarity Reports will not be generated for any submission until the Due date of the assignment. Students can resubmit as needed until the Due date and time but no Similarity Reports are generated.
  • Generate reports immediately (students cannot resubmit):  This option is not recommended as students are unable to resubmit and submissions are not checked against each other. Submissions must be deleted by the lecturer/course officer to enable resubmission. Similarity Reports for all submissions will be generated immediately. Students cannot resubmit papers.
  • The remainder of the options enable you to exclude certain searches from a Similarity Report and we do not recommend that any of these options are changed. These Similarity Report should be filtered in the Feedback Studio during the marking process instead.
  • You cannot use Feedback Studio for providing feedback on a group assignment so you can skip the Rubric option.
  • Turnitin rubrics

Screenshot of Notification settings on a Moodle assignment.

  • If you want all Lecturers and Programme Administrators on a module to be notified via email of late submissions change Notify graders about late submissions to Yes .
  • The Default setting for Notify students is Yes . Do not change this setting as it controls the generation of an email to students on release of grades and feedback.

moodle turnitin group assignment

  • The other grading methods are Rubrics and Marking records.
  • Anonymous submissions aren't possible with groups as the lecturer can see the membership of each groups.
  • Use  Marking workflow  is an  optional workflow  that requires grades to go through a series of stages before they're released to students.
  • This option might be required if course officers are uploading feedback received from lecturers.
  • From the Common module settings , you can set Availability to Show or Hide on course page .
  • You do not need to change the Group mode .
  • Select Save and return to module .

You can use the Restrict access settings to control the availability of content and activities based on one or more conditions, including date and group.

Activity completion allows you to set completion criteria for a specific activity or resource.

Activities or resources with a completion criteria display a circle next to them in the Module index. The circle turns green (and is filled in) when the student meet the criteria. On the main module page, a tick and the word "done" appears against the item when the student meets the criteria. This helps students manage their progress on a module and staff can easily review student engagement and progress against key activities.

You can combine Restrict access   and Activity completion to provide structured pathways through your module.

Apply the settings

  • Open the activity or resource.
  • Select Settings from the contextual navigation menu above the module name. This opens the activity settings.
  • Change the settings required.
  • Select Save and return to module  to save any changes made.

Adding a Turnitin Assignment in Moodle

Enable editing.

Before you can make any changes to your Moodle unit you must first enable editing. To do this, click the Turn editing on button located at the top right of the page.

With editing enabled, you will see in each topic the Add an activity or resource link. Click this link to view the Add an activity or resource window.

Select Turnitin Assignment from the window.

Add your Turnitin Assignment Name and Summary ; your summary could include, for example, any instructions or guidance that you want to give participants. ( Note : it may be useful to include ‘Turnitin’ somewhere in the title in order to help students locate the assignment more easily.)

In the General settings you will the following options to select from:

Submission Type – here you can choose File Upload(where a student submits an existing document) or Text Submission(where students type straight into an online textbox). Default – Any Submission Type. In most cases you will choose File Upload here.

Number of parts – this allows for the creation of a multi-part assignment, where individual students can submit one piece of work to each part. A maximum of 5 parts can be chosen. Default – 1.

The Maximum File Size – this determines the maximum file size for each user submission to each assignment part. Allowed values range from 10KB to 20MB. Default – 20MB.

Anonymous Marking – enables anonymous marking. Note that once anonymous marking has been enabled on an assignment it cannot be disabled. Default – Yes. (The default setting is determined by University regulations regarding marking.)

Student Originality Reports – if set to Yes, students can view the originality report for their submission. Default – Yes. (Recommended so that Turnitin can help students develop their writing skills.)

The next collection of settings are the Turnitin Advanced Options .

Settings include:

Allow late submissions – When set to Yes, students are allowed to submit their assignments after the due date and time, so long as they have not already submitted an assignment. Late submissions will be marked with red text in the date column of the submission in the assignment inbox. Default – Yes. (Late assignments are allowed, but attract a penalty.)

Report Generation Speed – 3 options:

Generate reports immediately, first report is final – students can only submit their assignment once and the report is available immediately. This counts for each part of the submission.

Generate reports immediately, reports can be overwritten until due date – students can submit their assignment as many times as they like until the due date (for each part of the assignment) and the report is available immediately. Each time they submit, the previous submission within each part will be overwritten. Please note: if a student resubmits their work there is a longer delay (24 hours) between submitting and receiving the report.

Generate reports on due date – the originality report will not be generated until the due date and time of the part. Students can resubmit as many times as they like until the due date without receiving reports. Default – Generate reports immediately, reports can be overwritten until due date. (The University’s Turnitin policy states that students should be offered the opportunity to check their own draft text-based assignment using Turnitin.)

Store Students Papers – Here you can specify which repository the students’ assignments will be submitted to. This means the assignments will be stored in a database and used for future originality reports (only the student and the instructor will have access to the assignment):

No Repository – the assignments will not be added to any repository.

Standard Repository (default) – the assignments will be submitted to a Turnitin repository that contains assignments previously submitted through Turnitin dropboxes.

Institutional Repository – the assignments will be added to a repository that contains assignments previously submitted to Turnitin from the University of Portsmouth.

The following settings allow you to specify which search targets you would like to search against.

Check against stored student papers – assignments submitted to Turnitin from all universities. Default – Yes.

Check against Internet – a repository of archived and live publicly available internet pages containing billions of pages of existing content. Tens of thousands of new pages added daily. Default – Yes.

Check against journals, periodicals and publications – third-party periodicals and journals; includes many major professional journals, periodicals and business publications. Default – Yes.

Exclude Bibliography – this allows the ability to control the option of whether the bibliographic material will be excluded from the originality report. Note that you can include/exclude the bibliography when viewing or analysing the originality report. Default – Yes.

Exclude Quoted Material – this allows the ability to control the option of whether quoted material will be excluded from the originality report. Note that you can include/exclude the bibliography when viewing or analysing the originality report. Default – Yes.

Exclude small matches – this allows the ability to control the option of whether small matches will be excluded from the originality report. You can choose to exclude matches that are either below a certain number of words or below a certain percentage.

From the Grade settings you can select the type of grading you wish to use for the Turnitin Assignment. If "scale" is chosen, you can then choose the scale from the "scale" dropdown. If using "point" grading, you can then enter the maximum grade available for this activity.

The next two boxes in the setup process are Common module settings and Restrict access .

As with any Moodle item, you can assign a Group or grouping to the Turnitin Assignment (groups might have their own version of the Assignment, or a selective release might be applied to a particular group/s). If you have Moodle groups set up you can display the submissions for each group, which is useful if there is more than one marker.

Enable a Restrict access date to hide the Turnitin Assignment on the home page until you want it to be visible. Note that this date is NOT the Turnitin start date, due date or post date! The Assignment can be shown greyed out until the access date, or else hidden entirely.

When you are happy with the options you have selected, select Save and display at the bottom of the page to create the Turnitin Assignment.

A summary of the Turnitin Assignment will appear, with each part you specified on its own line.

Start Date – the date/time from when students can begin uploading their work.

Due Date – the date/time the students’ work is due in.

Post Date – this is used if you are marking online with Grademark. This date will be when students will be able to view their Grademark comments and see their overall grade.

Using the pencil symbol at the end of each row, you can edit the name of the part, the start date, due date and post date.

Make sure you do this for each Part of the Assignment, then select Submit to save any changes.

Student Submission – If you go into the Submit Paper tab you will see the way students submit their work. (You are able to submit it on their behalf, or as a dummy student if you need to.)

You will need to specify which student it is from a drop-down list, and give the submission a title.

If your 'parts' overlap, both you and your students can select the part to which they want to submit. (We suggest that the start and due dates of each part should not overlap, in order to help prevent submissions going to the wrong place.)

You then search for a file, using the Browse button, and click Add Submission .

To view submissions, select the Submission Inbox tab. You will see a list of people attached to the Turnitin Assignment. If a student has made a submission you will see their submitted file(s) underneath their name.

Select the name of the file to load the Turnititn document viewer. You can then look at the plagiarism result and carry out online marking. To learn how to use these two tools, please see the separate help guides.

Each submission will get a similarity score. The score may take some time to come through. If a score hasn’t come through, try pressing the Refresh Submissions tab.

Documentation

Development : turnitin.

Template:Turnitin This integration is different from the Turnitin Assignment type developed by IParadigms and supported from Turnitin.com. This integration is being developed by Dan Marsden from Catalyst IT Ltd.

  • 1 Details on the Official Turnitin plugin
  • 2 The new integration planned
  • 3 Other possible features
  • 4.1 Current Features in Released code
  • 4.2 Stuff that would be nice to do at some point, but is not currently funded

Details on the Official Turnitin plugin

The Turnitin assignment type provided from Turnitin.com has a range of issues that affect different Moodle versions. They have improved the code in some of the later versions that Turnitin have released, but it still has some major shortcomings.

Basically, their plugin just provides single sign-on into their own assignment submission process, keeping the Moodle sites header, and opening their site in a frame underneath. - this means that all assignments are stored in the Turnitin system, and there is no ability to store a grade in Moodle for those assignments. - if you canceled your Turnitin subscription, there is no way in Moodle to retrieve the files submitted either.

The new integration planned

I have started writing a new Turnitin integration which is now in beta release for Moodle 1.9

A 3rd party patch for Moodle 1.9 is currently available, and this should be in the Moodle 2.0 release.

it allows any module in Moodle to submit files to the Turnitin API, and be able to return a similarity percentage score, and a link to a full similarity report.

The integration will allow us to add the option for Turnitin submission to Moodle Modules that handle file submissions.

After a student has submitted a file to the module, it passes that file to Turnitin, gets an originality score, and link to a full originality report that will be displayed to whoever that module is configured to display the information to. Eg: on creating an assignment in moodle, a teacher will be able to elect to use Turnitin, and "what" to do with the reports generated. - they may choose to show the originality score but not the full report or a combination to the student.

A Capability moodle/course:enableturnitin has been created (given to teachers by default) that allows them to "enable" Turnitin submission in their assignment/forum etc.. This is so that you can assign this role to a select group of people if needed. (good for running a pilot!)

These are some of the areas which we could add the turnitin submission to, but not all of them will be available in the initial versions of the integration.

  • single file upload assignment type
  • advanced file upload assignment type
  • online assignment type
  • all files attached to forum posts
  • other modules that allow file uploads
  • modules that allow submission via the HTML editor (essay questions, regular forum posts, etc.)

I'm planning to present at Moodlemoot AU and Moodlemoot NZ on the Turnitin integration.

Other possible features

What we implement now really depends on what funding is available, and the priorities of the people providing funding, but here are a range of other ideas that could/might be implemented.

  • Need to investigate whether the API will allow flagging that the paper should not be stored for comparison against other submitted papers (and add an option to the interface for teachers to enable/disable it)
  • Push the originality score and link for full report into the gradebook for controlling/displaying.

Development Plan for Moodle 1.9 integration

Current features in released code.

  • Integrate TII with Advanced upload and single upload assignment types.
  • A new capability moodle/course:enableturnitin will be created to give teachers to use TII submission.
  • Teachers will be able to "enable" the TII submission when creating a new Advanced Assignment Type.
  • TII originality Score, and Full report will only be available to Teachers via the submissions page.
  • all files uploaded to the assignment will be submitted to TII via cron
  • Originality score/Full report will be checked for availability via cron.
  • Display some "disclaimer" type text to the student when TII is enabled to explain that the assignment will be automatically submitted to TII

Add the ability for teachers to elect who/when a originality score and or full report is available to:

  • As soon as the report is back
  • After the due date of the assignment
  • Add options to admin pages to set what settings are the default for TII settings within modules.

Stuff that would be nice to do at some point, but is not currently funded

  • add the functionality to the Online assignment type
  • add the functionality to the discussion forum uploads
  • add the functionality for files uploaded via html editor(essay questions etc)

From The University of Waikato

  • Provide option for to not store assignment submissions on the Tii database and what to check/compare them against (as per Tii 'Allow other papers to be checked against submission' option)
  • Option to check/compare submissions against others in the same assignment or not
  • Better error display to students so they are informed if a file is not valid or long enough etc
  • ‘keep alive’ type communication when a lecturer is viewing a report to prevent Tii website timeout
  • Similarity report link advising the status of the report to the lecturer (e.g pending, invalid file type, etc)(Done as at October but after speaking with Dan this information needs to be more "user friendly")

  • The first setting, Enable Turnitin, may already be enabled. Your administrator will determine its initial state when first creating the integration. If you want to use Turnitin with the assignment make sure it is ticked.
  • (Optional) There are several other options within Turnitin plagiarism plugin settings that you can customize for each assignment. The defaults are set by your administrator. Feel free to change any that you need to!

Generate Similarity Reports

Immediately : The similarity report will be generated as soon as a file is uploaded. Immediately and regenerate on due date: A similarity report will be generated after a file is uploaded and then we will regenerate it on the due date. This is useful when looking for collusion within a group. Due date : Files will only receive a similarity report on the due date of the assignment.

Submission Indexing

Index all submissions - This option will add files automatically to your organization's private repository. This makes them available to be matched against in similarity reports by other people within your organization.

Student Access

Allow students to view Similarity Reports - This setting determines if students are able to see similarity reports that are generated.

Exclude from Similarity Reports

Bibliography and Quotes - Allows you to automatically exclude bibliographies and quotes from the similarity reports. Want to know more? Check out the guide .
