of 15 Best Biopics on Netflix Right Now

Biopics have now become a hot genre because there’s something about real-life stories of certain individuals that lure filmmakers. It may be an entire lifetime of a person or just a few crucial years that act as an amazing storyline for a film. It’s no surprise why biopics are able to do so well. Extraordinary stories of successful people or people who had a deeper cause to serve society, all of these inspire us to live a better life. But these stories become more impactful when they are based on the lives of real individuals. Some make us believe in ourselves and our goals while some restore our faith in humanity. The good news is that a great number of these movies are already available on Netflix. So all you have to do is scroll down and choose one of the few biopic movies that we have listed. Here’s the list of really good biopic movies on Netflix that are available to stream right now.

netflix biographies movies

When Carton defied the morals of the church and started preaching that there is no hell, he found himself being ostracized by his own church and the Christian community who labeled him as an unorthodox non-conformist. The film has a lot of mixed opinions when it comes to the reviews because it goes against the religious values of a lot of people. But don’t let the reviews fool you, this film is great and has some amazing cinematography with acting.

netflix biographies movies

netflix biographies movies

Directed by Angeline Jolie , this one is the true story of a 5-year-old girl named Loung Ung and her struggles with her family when the Khmer Rouge had taken over Cambodia in the year 1975. Their terrorizing rule led to the death of over 2 million Cambodians. The film shows how Ung and her siblings were sent to Labor Camps and were trained to become soldiers at such a young and delicate age. This film holds a great amount of historical accuracy and clearly, a lot of effort has been into portraying Loung Ung’s story. It does not focus too much on showing the violence and gore prevailing at that time and instead shows the underlying terror and chaos during the time which makes this one a great watch.

11. Christine (2016)

netflix biographies movies

Christine Chubbuck was a TV reporter back in the 70s. This film tells her story by narrating her struggles as a working woman, pressures from her home and also her own depression . This film has been quite under the radar but deserves more appreciation. It tends to get inside your head with its depressing characters and storyline with uncomfortable slow burn throughout. Note that this movie can be triggering for those who are already going through something but overall, it’s a very good movie with some brilliant acting.

Gus Van Sant's "Milk" tells the story of gay rights activist Harvey Milk , the first-ever openly gay person to be elected to public office in California.

Sean Penn won an Oscar for playing Milk, while a stellar supporting cast includes James Franco, Josh Brolin, and Diego Luna.

'Ip Man' (2008)

netflix biographies movies

"Ip Man" and its three sequels are the ultimate compendium of the life and times of Ip Man, the grandmaster of Wing Chun and the teacher of Bruce Lee.

The stunning cinematography and choreography help to bring a unique visual style to these biographical films.

Good news, too. "Ip Man" two, three, and four are all also on Netflix, so you can watch the entire saga.

'The Social Network' (2010)

netflix biographies movies

Aaron Sorkin's masterful screenplay served as the basis for this film, which explores how Mark Zuckerberg created what would later be known as Facebook.

Jesse Eisenberg plays Zuckerberg, while Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, and Rooney Mara chip in with outstanding supporting performances, too. The movie competed for multiple Oscars, but ultimately only won for Sorkin's script despite David Fincher being a hot contender for best director.

'My Week With Marylin' (2011)

netflix biographies movies

There have been many biographical films and TV shows that have explored the life of Marilyn Monroe , but none match up to Michelle Williams' performance as the iconic actress.

This movie cleverly focuses on one week in 1956, when Monroe was shooting the 1957 film "The Prince and the Showgirl" with Laurence Olivier (played in this film by Kenneth Branagh).

While shooting the film in London, Monroe is escorted around the town by a young, hopeful filmmaker (Eddie Redmayne).

'The Iron Lady' (2011)

netflix biographies movies

Meryl Streep won her third Oscar for this biopic, winning best actress for playing Margaret Thatcher .

While the movie itself received luke-warm reviews, this is worth a watch for Streep's powerhouse performance alone as we are shown Thatcher's life from a young politician to her days as Prime Minister to the years when her health began to decline.

'Get on Up' (2011)

netflix biographies movies

The late, great Chadwick Boseman starred in multiple biopics, but his performance as James Brown in "Get on Up" is one of his very best.

This biopic tells the complete story of Brown's life as he rose from poverty to become one of the most iconic musicians of all time.

'Fruitvale Station' (2013)

netflix biographies movies

Michael B. Jordan made a name for himself with this heartbreaking and tragic movie following the story of Oscar Grant III.

The movie, which also stars fellow future MCU star Brie Larson, follows Oscar on the last day of 2008, which detailed how he was killed at the hands of police.

'Philomena' (2013)

netflix biographies movies

Steve Coogan traded in his comedy chops for more drama with this movie, which he also wrote (with Jeff Pope).

Coogan plays a journalist who agrees to take on the story of an elderly Irish woman's (Judi Dench) search for her long-lost son, who was taken away from her by nuns when she was forced to live in a convent.

Dench earned an Oscar nomination for her funny and moving performance.

'The Theory of Everything' (2014)

netflix biographies movies

This movie explores the lives of Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his now ex-wife Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones), from their times as university students to Hawking's diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and onwards.

Jones earned an Oscar nomination for her role while Redmayne won the Oscar for best actor.

'Legend' (2015)

netflix biographies movies

Another case of an actor's performance outshining their own film. In "Legend," Tom Hardy takes on the dual role of Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie, as the film follows the rise and fall of the infamous gangsters.

Hardy is unrecognizable in both roles and this film is worth watching for him alone.

'Trumbo' (2015)

netflix biographies movies

Bryan Cranston earned his first and (so far) only Oscar nomination for his portrayal of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, the man who wrote "Spartacus," "Roman Holiday" and "The Brave One."

This biopic follows Trumbo's early success in the industry to his eventual blacklisting in Hollywood for being a member of the USA's communist party and his career thereafter.

'Steve Jobs' (2015)

netflix biographies movies

Another killer script from Aaron Sorkin served as the basis for this quietly-thrilling look at Steve Jobs, the late creative who built Apple.

The movie cleverly focuses on three separate product launches in different years, showing the sort of person Jobs was at work and at home.

Despite a troubled production history, which saw a change of actors and directors more than once, the movie soars with Michael Fassbender in the lead role of Jobs. He and Kate Winslet were both nominated for Oscars.

'The Founder' (2016)

netflix biographies movies

This is the story of how one of the largest and most recognizable brands in the world was made: McDonald's.

Michael Keaton stars as the shady, ruthless, and ambitious businessman Ray Kroc, who stole the McDonald brothers' fast food business out from under them.

'The Two Popes' (2019)

netflix biographies movies

While a movie about two Popes chatting for two hours might not sound thrilling, it actually is.

Written by "The Theory of Everything" scribe Anthony McCarten, Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins star as the future Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI, respectively.

The two men engage in conversational battles of wit, principles, and conflicting opinions as Pope Benedict's time as the head of the Catholic Church comes to an end.

'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile' (2019)

netflix biographies movies

In Zac Efron's darkest ever role , the "High School Musical" alum plays serial killer Ted Bundy.

Told from the point of view of his longtime girlfriend Liz (Lily Collins), who refused to believe the truth about Bundy, we learn of the horrific nature of one of America's most infamous killers.

'Mank' (2020)

netflix biographies movies

Nominated for 10 Oscars and winning two , David Fincher's expertly-crafted movie explores the life of Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and how he wrote "Citizen Kane."

Oldman earned an Oscar nomination for playing Mankiewicz, while Amanda Seyfried landed her first-ever Oscar nod for her supporting performance as actress Marion Davies.

Fincher presents this story in the format of a 1940s movie itself, complete with reel-change cigarette burns, which indicate when a film reel needs to be changed.

Disclosure: Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Business Insider's parent company, Axel Springer, is a Netflix board member.

Best Biography Movies on Netflix (2024)

5 best Netflix biopics to watch right now

Real people get the spotlight in these great biographical movies

Woman with popcorn bowl holding remote to watch Netflix on television

Netflix has dominated the biopic market for quite a while. Between dramatized movies of well-known figures, little-known moments in history, and true crime, there are plenty of real-life events and figures to draw from. Though Netflix originals have made a splash in the past decade, the streaming site also boasts a number of blockbuster biopics that fans are still talking about years later.

Many biopic movies are adapted from primary or secondary sources, like Maestro and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. So while these movies are fictionalized to some extent, deriving them from reliable accounts helps add a moderate level of authenticity. However, it’s best to take these movies with a grain of salt and do research before taking them too seriously. Here are some of the best biopics on Netflix you can stream right now.

The Imitation Game

The 2014 movie The Imitation Game takes viewers back to 1939. The film focuses on Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch): a mathematical genius tasked with breaking seemingly uncrackable Nazi codes for M16 (a British intelligence agency). Kiera Knightley also stars in the movie as Joan Clarke, Turing’s fellow analyst.

On top of tackling the brutality of Nazi Germany, there’s an LGBTQ+ component to the film that sheds light on the homophobia of the time period. Many people might not realize that Hitler went after LGBTQ+ and disabled individuals along with the Jewish population. This particular story points out that criminalizing identities didn’t end when the war did — not even in Britain. - XH

Maestro is Bradley Cooper's return to the director's chair ( if he believed in such things ) following the smash success that was A Star Is Born. In this biopic, Cooper also stars as the acclaimed American conductor/composer/multihyphenate Leonard Bernstein.

While the movie is certainly an examination of Bernstein's life, it's largely about Bernstein's relationship with his wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). Maestro has been nominated for four  Golden Globe awards  including nominations for Cooper and Mulligan's performances, so don't miss it now that it's free on Netflix. - MM

This biopic centers on Bayard Rustin, the architect of the momentous 1963 March on Washington — where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech. Yet, Rustin was relegated to a footnote in history, mostly due to his homosexuality. As the activist, Colman Domingo gives a fiery performance that will likely draw many accolades during awards season.

The film chronicles how Rustin conceives and plans the largest nonviolent protest in the United States, joining forces with King (Aml Ameen) and other civil rights moment leaders like A. Philip Randolph (Glynn Turman) and Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (Jeffrey Wright). - KW

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Netflix original Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom marked Chadwick Boseman’s last film — and it didn’t disappoint. Viola Davis plays Ma Rainey alongside Boseman’s Levee in this movie that centers on a recording session with Rainey and her band.

The 1927 movie spans one single day as blues singer Rainey records the song the film is named after. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom illustrates the insidious 1920s racism in both the music industry and society as a whole. Glynn Turman (Toledo), Colman Domingo (Cutler), and Michael Potts (Slow Drag) also star in the George C. Wolfe-directed movie. August Wilson wrote the original play that Ruben Santiago-Hudson adapted into the movie. - XH

The inspiring true story of athlete Diana Nyad is fictionalized and brought to life. Decades after giving up marathon swimming, 60-year-old Diana (Annette Bening) decides to take on an epic challenge that always eluded her: the 110 mile trek from Cuba to Florida, often referred to as the Mount Everest of swims.

Determined to become the first person to complete the swim without a shark cage, Diana begins a four-year training journey with the help of best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster) and a dedicated sailing team. - KW

The 20 most inspiring movies on Netflix to lift your spirits

From tear-jerking true stories to Oscar-nominated films, the streamer has inspiration to spare.

Universal/Everett; David Lee/Netflix; Universal/Everett

We often choose a movie to watch based on how we want to feel. Comedies are a great remedy when you’re feeling sad, of course, and horror films are a nice jolt to the system when you’re craving a rush of adrenaline.

Sometimes, though, we don’t need frivolous frights or light-hearted laughs. Instead, we need a healthy dose of inspiration to help us get through the day. If that sounds like what you’re searching for, look no further than EW’s list of the 20 most inspiring movies on Netflix right now.

14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible (2021)

This documentary has the inspirational movie recipe memorized. Just take one ambitious climber (Nirmal Purja), an insane dream (trekking the world’s 14 highest mountains in only seven months), and let those simmer for around two hours. Beyond the pulse-quickening story, this film largely succeeds thanks to the riveting footage shot by the expedition team. The other production efforts are still impressive, but nothing beats the raw experience of walking alongside those trying to make the impossible possible.

Apollo 13 (1995)

Bill Paxton might have faced aliens as a colonial marine, but in Ron Howard ’s Apollo 13 , we see that space is still scary without killer xenomorphs. Great performances from Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon help us imagine the horror of the real Apollo 13 mission and the technical failures that threatened the entire crew's survival. Everyone is insanely vulnerable, with EW’s critic noting , “The revelation of the movie is how low tech much of their activity seems, as if they were ’50s mechanics in a 21st-century vehicle.”

Becoming (2020)

After Michelle Obama ’s 2018 memoir became a best-seller, it was only a matter of time before it was adapted into a film. Director Nadia Hallgren had immense access to Obama, following her across a 34-city book tour and turning the introspective writing into a dynamic reflection of the author as the archetypal modern woman. As EW’s critic said in their review , “[G]enerally, Obama comes across as she always has — commanding but approachable, thoughtful but funny, sincere but guarded. But after spending eight years in the White House glare, that guard is understandable.”

The Black Godfather (2019)

Clarence Avant, a music producer affectionately dubbed the “Godfather of Black music,” mostly flew under the mainstream radar with his brilliant artistic contributions. This documentary aims to change that by chronicling an unbelievable life that reshaped the music industry and made waves in politics, discussions of race, and business. With appearances from big names like Snoop Dogg , Jamie Foxx , and even former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, this inspirational movie is the perfect send-off for Avant, who died in 2023.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019)

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind may be a film about wind power, but the story runs on pure optimism. Chiwetel Ejiofor ’s movie follows the titular boy (Maxwell Simba) who is kicked out of school because his parents can’t afford tuition. This doesn’t keep him from secretly studying science, however, as he builds a windmill that can provide power for his humble village’s broken water pump. Inspirational and innovative, this film instantly harnesses your attention and affection.

Erin Brockovich (2000)

Erin Brockovich is a (more or less) true tale of a single mother ( Julia Roberts ) who becomes a proto-social justice warrior by taking legal action against PG&E for contaminating her community’s water supply. The story is inspiring and the performances are stunning, especially Roberts’ Oscar-winning turn. As EW’s critic writes , “It’s a delight to watch Roberts, with her flirtatious sparkle and undertow of melancholy, ricochet off [Albert] Finney’s wonderfully jaded, dry as beef jerky performance as the beleaguered career attorney who knows too much about the loopholes of his profession to have much faith left in it.”

Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song (2021)

Sony Pictures Classics/Everett

For Leonard Cohen fans, the dives don’t get much deeper than this. Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen , a Journey, a Song unpacks the legendary singer’s life and career through the lens of his famous “Hallelujah.” That sounds like a premise better suited for a podcast series, but the film (based on the book The Holy or the Broken ) works by leaning into a blunt truth: No matter how talented someone is, they’re still too often defined by their most popular work.

Though it was sadly snubbed at the Academy Awards, Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart is a still breathtaking directorial debut. The film focuses on Chief Ernest Obiagu (Pete Edochie), who must step down from running a company, and his daughter Adaeze (Nnaji), who wants to take his place. But after he chooses her brother instead, the pair must reconcile their resentment and cope with the practical fallout. Like some of the best inspirational movies, Lionheart weaves a captivating portrait with threads of loyalty, loss, and heartbreak.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019)

The Last Black Man in San Francisco has only grown more topical amid growing economic uncertainty and a housing bubble ready to burst. Here, Jimmie Fails plays himself as a man fighting for the house his grandfather built in 1946. When he begins squatting with a friend ( Jonathan Majors ), the film uses American financial anxiety as a backdrop for a timeless tale about race, performative masculinity, and what's at stake when upward mobility is limited.

Moneyball (2011)

In Moneyball , Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, the beleaguered manager of the Oakland Athletics who finds clever ways to compete against wealthier teams despite his shoestring budget. Between the crazy true story and the stellar acting by Jonah Hill and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, you don’t need to be a sports superfan to love this film. As EW’s critic pointed out in their review , “It’s a baseball drama about something novel and rich: Billy’s desire not just to win but to change the game — to take it back from the accountants and rediscover the joy of players who could still triumph by surprising you.”

My Octopus Teacher (2021)

My Octopus Teacher is a story of relationships, as told by a filmmaker who bonds with an octopus. Craig Foster spent a year free-diving and following the animal living in a South African kelp forest, and the more he understands her underwater way of life, the better he becomes at connecting with his son. This movie may be about a sea creature, but it's also an important story of humanity that is affecting, educational, and inspiring.

Pelé (2021)

In certain corners of the world, the name of soccer (or should we say football?) star Pelé is spoken with the reverence reserved for saints. Because of this star power, it’s easy for even the biggest fans to lose sight of the real man, whose legend still grows by the day. Fortunately, this documentary blends interviews, games, and other archival footage into a heartfelt, honest portrait of the man behind the myth.

Rustin (2023)

Rustin is a biographical drama with an impeccable pedigree: It’s directed by George C. Wolfe , produced by Barack and Michelle Obama ’s production company Higher Ground, and features great supporting actors like Chris Rock and Jeffrey Wright. Colman Domingo particularly shines as Bayard Rustin, a legendary LGBTQ+ activist who helped organize the March on Washington in 1963. He’s an often-overlooked figure, partially due to his sexuality, but this film helps further cement his place in American history.

Society of the Snow (2023)

Society of the Snow may be adapted from a non-fiction book, but this cinematic tale of a doomed rugby team’s plane crash in the Andes mountains brings several new elements to light. For one, the cast — most of them first-time actors from Uruguay — feels refreshingly authentic, while the crisp direction and artful cinematography make for a beautiful contrast with the characters’ cannibalistic fate. It’s not for the weak of heart, but this showcase of humanity’s resilience is inspirational on its own bleakly noble terms.

Stronger (2017)

Produced in the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, David Gordon Green ’s film traces Jeff Bauman’s ( Jake Gyllenhaal ) incredible recovery arc after losing both his legs in the blast. It’s one of Gyllenhaal’s most emotionally affecting movies to date, imbuing the tragic true story with a breathless authenticity. To quote EW’s critic , “Gyllenhaal gives such a powerfully lived-in performance that it’s hard not to follow him down into every moment: the awful instant a friendly encounter turns ugly at a pub; the terrifying flashbacks that jolt him as he’s wheeled out to salute the rapturous crowd at a hockey game.”

Unbroken ’s true story is so crazy that it sounds made up. This inspirational odyssey centers on an American athlete ( Jack O'Connell ) whose Olympic dreams are dashed first by World War II and then by a plane crash, culminating in him becoming a Japanese POW. Based on the best-selling book of the same name, Angelina Jolie’s film is as visually lush as it is emotionally raw, with EW’s critic deeming it an “oddly old-fashioned drama” that is “gorgeously shot and beautifully acted, and it has moments of heartbreaking poignancy.”

Wonder Woman (2017)

Wonder Woman is many things to many people. While a patently killer superhero movie, Patty Jenkins’ feature starring Gal Gadot is one of the few “tights and flights” flicks that has something to say, not just someone to punch. According to EW’s critic , the film “gets so much right, especially when it comes to Gadot’s revelatory portrayal of Wonder Woman. The wait is over, folks. The DC movie you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived.”

Despite its jaunty title, Zero to Hero is a profound and serious story of human triumph in the face of adversity. This Hong Kong film’s guiding force is So Wa Wai (Chung-Hang Leung), a real athlete whose aspirations were nearly thwarted by cerebral spasms that made even walking difficult. Throughout the runtime, we see him remarkably regain his ability to run against all odds, paving the way for a major victory. If you need a truly inspirational movie, this is a solid place to start.

Rounding out the preview, here are a few more announced projects in the past, but we’ve had little to no information since:

  • Janet – From Janet Mock, this feature film was announced back in 2020 and would tell the story of a young black woman at the Washington Post and her ambitious and complicated quest to make the front page.
  • Tenzing – A feature film from Higher Ground Productions based on the life of Tenzing Norgay, the first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.
  • The Ice Bucket Challenge – Produced by Casey Affleck, this biopic would’ve looked into the activist behind the viral sensation.

What biopics are you most excited to watch on Netflix in the years to come? Let us know in the comments.

Downfall: The Case Against Boeing

The Boeing 737 Max incidents shook the world back in 2019, when two of the massive planes crashed within months of each other, killing 346 people. This investigation into the role played by Boeing’s alleged emphasis on profit over safety seriously sullied the company’s reputation and is, sadly, still timely in 2024.

The 15 Best Biographical Series To Watch Now On Netflix

' src=

It is evident that there is an irresistible attraction to historical figures and to those profiles that have managed to overcome the barriers of anonymity and settle within mainstream general or its popular culture. The problem is that sometimes these are not profiles that deserve to be followed and whose example leaves much to be desired. But either out of admiration, or to try to understand how and why they did certain atrocities, biographical series have made their way in recent years in a relevant way.

The best biographical series on Netflix

Nor is it that we discover a new genre. Biographies have always been one of the literary references and throughout history, rivers of ink have been written on key figures from all eras, or contemporaries who cause admiration for their sporting, artistic, political, etc. achievements. Now instead of having to read a volume of a thousand pages, we achieve something similar by watching several episodes of a series, fictionalized or documentary, for which it has become a healthy habit that many have seen rewarded with the arrival of streaming platforms. .

So We have chosen the 15 most interesting biographical series you have on Netflix and, yes, we are not going to say anything about The Crown because, as the classic would say, it does not enter the contest because it is already too well known by the platform's subscribers. Or have you not found out that Queen Elizabeth II has passed away and you can learn about her entire life and her miracles thanks to the fiction released in 2016, which is undoubtedly one of the best we have available?

Here you have our (other) 15 Netflix Biographical Series favorites... and yes, the order does not matter:

This is the original series inspired by the life of both Pablo Escobar and his Medellín cartel, as well as the DEA agents who collaborated in his capture in July 1992. It is one of the best productions that you can enjoy on the platform, by far.

Narcos Mexico

The consequence of ending Pablo Escobar was that the action moved to Mexico, in the same way that the path of drugs ceased to have its epicenter in Colombia. On this occasion we will learn about the rise of the cartels that became famous for the extreme violence with which they were used to enforce their law and how the local authorities and the DEA tried to confront them.

The code that was worth millions

What would you think if we told you that Google did not invent Google Earth or Google Maps? That that achievement must be recognized to two young Germans and that, according to them and this series, all their work was stolen with impunity by those from Mountain View. A single season will serve you to learn the ins and outs of what happened with a technology that has changed the world.

Luis Miguel: the series

It was possibly one of the most media releases of the season at the time, especially among the Latino public, in which its protagonist, Luis Miguel, is very loved and followed. This series tells us about the beginnings, from a young age, of the Mexican singer and has neither more nor less than the approval of the artist.

Madame CJ Walker

There are amazing biographies, like that of this woman who, at the end of the XNUMXth century and the beginning of the XNUMXth, and despite the segregation laws that many states still tried to impose, was able to become a millionaire by developing and selling beauty products and for the hair of black women. The Madame CJ Walker Manufacturing Company the work of Sarah Breedlove. An example to follow.

Who is Anna?

It is certain that the name of Anna Delvey does not sound too familiar to you, but behind it the legend was forged that it was a wealthy German heiress, businesswoman , who was able to captivate and swindle the entire New York elite. Quite an event that this series reminds us of in a fictional way.

We are before the history of Louis XIV, the famous Sun King who created an absolutist monarchy where fashion, art and gastronomy were part of the axis of his power. A character so real that they have come to brand him as calculating, Machiavellian and very, very intelligent. Be sure to see it if you want to get an idea of what the times were like before the French Revolution in the XNUMXth century and the famous guillotines .

This miniseries tells the story of Clark Olofsson, a criminal who spent half his life in jail accused of murder, assaults, robberies and drug trafficking. Despite the endless list of his crimes, he came to be acclaimed by Swedish society at the time, which is why, thanks to this paradox, we today use the famous expression of suffering from "Stockholm syndrome."

Alias Grace

Set in the XNUMXth century, this series tells the story of Grace Marks, a young Irish immigrant who worked as a domestic servant in a house and is accused of the brutal murder of her boss. Throughout all her episodes we will know the evidence used against you and how was her defense before the court that judged her.

Manhunt: Unabomber

A relentless serial killer who has operated for almost two decades in the US sending bombs through the mail, is pursued by the FBI authorities, who fail to find him. In the series we will see how the agents of the time had to sharpen their instinct to get the most impossible tests to end up discovering the whereabouts of what was proven to be Theodore "Ted" Kaczynski.

Mary Magdalene

The story of Mary Magdalene as Jesus' companion throughout a good part of her life is represented in a personal way in This series consists of two seasons and that draws us to a protagonist ahead of her time.

This series tells the story of a ruthless criminal, Charles Sobhraj , who came to be known as "the bikini killer" and who sought out his victims among the thousands of Western tourists who traveled to Southeast Asia in the 70s. Based, as always, on a true and practically biographical case .

Monster: The Story of  Jeffrey Dahmer

It has just been released and is already giving people something to talk about. And it is that this series puts us on the trail of Jeffrey Dahmer -masterfully played by Even Peters-, a serial killer also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster and who is capable of giving goosebumps to more than one. Safety pin.

Few expected that this miniseries, based on an autobiographical book by Deborah Feldman (titled « Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots» ) surprised so much, but it did. And a lot. Thanks to her we delve into the depths of an ultra-orthodox Jewish family from the Satmar community, in New York, and we see how her protagonist tries to escape from the suffocating life in which she has always been raised, managing to escape to Berlin.

The assistant

Few know that this miniseries, starring the brilliant and young Margaret Qualley, is actually a biographical story based on the successful written work "Maid" by Stephanie Land, in which she talks about her beginnings as a single mother working in precarious and poorly paid posts by USA.

Timothee Chalamet stars at the camera in Fremen garb as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two.

Greetings, Polygon readers! Each week, we round up the most notable new releases to streaming and VOD, highlighting the biggest and best new movies for you to watch at home.

Dune: Part Two hits Max, so now you can do a double feature right at home ( popcorn bucket not included ). But if you’re not a Dune-head, there’s also Jennifer Lopez mech flick Atlas on Netflix or the romantic comedy The Fall Guy ready to rent. There’s also Disney Plus’ Beach Boys documentary and Prime Video’s Blue Angels documentary — a perfect double feature to watch with Dad!

Here’s everything new available to watch this weekend!

New on Netflix

Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix

Jennifer Lopez puts her fists up ready to fight in the cockpit of a mech in Atlas

Genre: Science fiction action Run time: 1h 58m Director: Brad Peyton Cast: Jennifer Lopez, Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown

Jennifer Lopez stars as a sharp data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. But when her latest mission goes wrong, she has to learn to trust AI in order to save humanity. It also kind of looks like a Titanfall movie in the mech design!

New on Disney Plus

The beach boys.

Where to watch: Available to stream on Disney Plus

The Beach Boys performing

Genre: Documentary Run time: 1h 52m Director: Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny

It’s the Beach Boys! The new Disney Plus documentary follows the band from their inception and features some brand-new interviews and unseen footage. Expect a lot of good vibrations.

New on Hulu

Where to watch: Available to stream on Hulu

Two men in sunglasses stare moodily in the distance

Genre: Biographical sports drama Run time: 2h 10m Director: Michael Mann Cast: Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley

Adam Driver stars as Enzo Ferrari, the founder of — you guessed it! — the Italian sports car manufacturer of the same name. Ferrari takes place during the summer of 1957, when Ferrari (the company, not the dude) plans to compete in the Mille Miglia (big race).

The Seeding

A man crouching in a cavern

Genre: Horror thriller Run time: 1h 40m Director: Barnaby Clay Cast: Scott Haze, Kate Lyn Sheil, Alex Montaldo

This atmospheric horror thriller follows a man lost in the desert. Luckily, he finds a woman living off the grid! Unluckily, that woman is being held captive by a group of sadistic teenagers.

Dune: Part Two

Where to watch: Available to stream on Max

Timothée Chalamet’s Paul and Zendaya’s Chani kiss on the top of a sand dune in Dune: Part Two.

Genre: Epic sci-fi Run time: 2h 46m Director: Denis Villeneuve Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson

The follow-up to the 2021 sci-fi epic doesn’t disappoint. In fact, it surpasses all expectations and even makes the first Dune movie better.

From our review :

For those who loved it, the promise of Part Two was that the conclusion of Paul’s journey would be even more exciting, beautiful, and poignant. For those who were bored during Part One , the promise was that all the slow, exposition-heavy pacing was in service of streamlining this next installment. Dune: Part Two is exactly the movie Part One promised it could be, the rare sequel that not only outdoes its predecessor, but improves it in retrospect.

New on Prime Video

The blue angels.

Where to watch: Available to stream on Prime Video

Blue airplanes go zoom across the sky

Genre: Documentary Run time: 1h 32m Director: Paul Crowder

This documentary follows a new class of Blue Angels, made up of Navy and Marine Corps pilots, as they master some intense aerial techniques. It’s juxtaposed with a group of veteran pilots who will take to the air for the last time.

New on Criterion Channel

About dry grasses.

Where to watch: Available to stream on Criterion Channel

A woman sitting at a dinner table, dimly lit. She looks vaguely pissed off. We are looking at her over someone else’s head.

Genre: Drama Run time: 3h 17m Director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan Cast: Deniz Celiloğlu, Merve Dizdar, Musab Ekici

From acclaimed Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan ( Winter Sleep ), About Dry Grasses follows a teacher from Istanbul who’s assigned to work in a remote village. After being accused of appropriate behavior by two students (one of them his protégée), he longs to move back to Istanbul.

New to rent

The fall guy.

Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon , Apple , and Vudu

In a scene from The Fall Guy, stunt man Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling, in sunglasses, a filthy sleeveless vest, and a scowl) leans one-armed against a wall in a room lined with neon-colored movie posters

Genre: Action comedy Run time: 2h 6m Director: David Leitch Cast: Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson

This Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt action-comedy-romance, a big blockbuster adventure movie built around huge feels and even bigger practical stunts , did so poorly in its opening weekend at the box office that it spawned a wave of panicked “Are theatrical blockbusters dead?!?” thinkpieces. (Spoiler: Maybe? If so, that’s fine. ) Now it’s hitting VOD just three weeks after its theatrical debut.

But don’t let the hand-wringing worry about its flop status put you off from watching it at home. It’s a pretty charming movie, much in the spirit of The Lost City , with big stars bantering, flirting, and fighting in between ’splosions and some really fun fight scenes. —Tasha Robinson

Photojournalists Lee Miller (Kirsten Dunst) and Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) huddle together, Jessie clutching her camera and wearing a bright blue helmet that says “PRESS,” in Alex Garland’s Civil War

Genre: Dystopian thriller Run time: 1h 49m Director: Alex Garland Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny

Alex Garland’s thriller stays away from present-day political themes to instead focus on war correspondents and journalism.

The entire film is paced and planned with that dynamic involved. It’s a particularly gorgeous drama, shot with a loving warmth that reflects its point of view, through the eyes of two photographers used to conceiving of everything around them in terms of vivid, compelling images. A late-film sequence shot as the group drives through a forest fire is especially beautiful, but the movie in general seems designed to impress viewers on a visual level.

Stress Positions

A woman with her legs spread in a squat shows a flustered man a picture on her phone

Genre: Comedy drama Run time: 1h 35m Director: Theda Hammel Cast: John Early, Qaher Harhash, Elizabeth Dement

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a Brooklyn man ends up taking care of his nephew in his ex-husband’s apartment while said nephew recovers from a broken leg. But apparently everyone he knows wants to meet his nephew. Cue the hilarity.

Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon when they were kids-ish, Clint Eastwood as a drug mule on the other side of life, and Meryl Streep in “Out of Africa.”

A woman in a white shirt and dark shawl stands on a campground, her face lit by the light from a campfire in the background, tended by a man crouched by the flames.

By Jason Bailey

One of the most durable shows of the modern television era leaves Netflix in the United States this month, along with an equally long-lasting horror franchise, a handful of enjoyable genre flicks and several Oscar winners and nominees. (Dates indicate the final day a title is available.)

‘The Mule’ (June 16)

Stream it here .

Clint Eastwood starred in (for the first time in six years) and directed this 2018 mash-up of character drama and road movie, based on the true story of a 90-year-old veteran and great-grandfather who became a drug mule. Eastwood’s fictionalized protagonist makes this career shift because of hard times, financially and emotionally; he has lost his business and his family has turned away from him, for good reason. It’s a complicated character, likable and even empathetic while simultaneously amoral, and Eastwood seems to enjoy exploring those contradictions (and how they intersect with his own). The fine supporting cast includes Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Andy Garcia, Michael Peña and Dianne Wiest.

‘The Imitation Game’ (June 25)

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the British mathematician and cryptanalyst instrumental in the development of the first computers, in this sharp and well-acted biographical drama from the director Morten Tyldum. Cumberbatch plays Turing as a socially awkward, endlessly brilliant man who has secrets (including his closeted homosexuality). He tells the story of his life in a police interrogation, with particular focus on his time working with the team that broke the Nazi Enigma code; Charles Dance, Matthew Goode and Keira Knightley are among that group, and they tell a compelling story of mile-high stakes and thorny personalities. Cumberbatch was nominated for an Oscar, one of the picture’s eight nominations (its writer Graham Moore won the prize for best adapted screenplay).

‘NCIS’: Seasons 1-11 (June 29)

This military police procedural drama, still going strong after a staggering 21 seasons, has never been a favorite of critics. Its fans, though, cannot get enough , making it one of the longest-running shows in TV history, while spawning six spinoffs. (It was a slow starter ratings-wise, achieving its immense popularity several years into its run .) The predictability and formulaic nature of such procedurals, the very qualities that turn off some viewers and critics, are what its fans value. You know exactly what you’re going to get in an episode of “NCIS,” and it’s delivered crisply and efficiently, by actors who get the job done without showing off.

‘28 Days’ (June 30)

Years before winning an Oscar for “The Blind Side,” Sandra Bullock revealed the first hints of her considerable range in this engaging serio-comic drama from the director Betty Thomas (“Private Parts”) and the screenwriter Susannah Grant (“Erin Brockovich”). Bullock stars as a fast-living New York writer whose functional alcoholism is becoming less functional; she checks into a rehabilitation facility only when ordered to do so to avoid jail time for a D.U.I. As Michael Keaton did in 1988’s “Clean and Sober,” Bullock allows the loose formula of the rehab narrative to stretch her acting chops without eschewing the charm and charisma that made her a movie star. It’s a scrappy, alive performance, and Steve Buscemi provides able support as the counselor who has seen it all before.

‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ (June 30)

With this 1984 exploration of terror, dreams and the American suburbs, Wes Craven created one of the finest horror pictures of the 1980s, and one of its most popular boogeymen, Fred Krueger (Robert Englund). Krueger, a long-dead child murderer, begins invading the dreams of teenagers, resulting in their grisly deaths. Heather Langenkamp is a charismatic protagonist, while Johnny Depp makes a memorable feature film debut as her beau. Several of the film’s numerous sequels (and its ill-advised 2010 remake ) also leave Netflix this month; “ A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors ” is probably the best of the bunch, though the second and fourth installments have their fans.

‘Annie’ (June 30)

John Huston’s adaptation of the long-running Broadway smash was not well received by critics ( including ours ) when it hit theaters in 1982. But kids who saw it at the time — and were, to be fair, the target audience — adored it, and have maintained that affection in the decades since. It’s not hard to see why; the star Aileen Quinn is a cheerful audience surrogate as the title character, a precocious and plucky Great Depression-era orphan, Albert Finney is suitably stiff-upper-lipped as the millionaire who adopts her, Ann Reinking is dazzling as his personal secretary, and Carol Burnett, Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters provide ample and earthy comic relief.

‘Fear’ (June 30)

“Surprise, surprise,” our critic wrote . “Mark Wahlberg, the pug-faced actor formerly known as Marky Mark, could be on the verge of full-fledged movie stardom.” It seemed a laughable notion — that the rapper and underwear model fancied himself a thespian, but Wahlberg proved himself the real deal with this 1996 erotic thriller, part of the era’s “[blank] from hell” (nanny, mistress, secretary, etc.) cycle. Wahlberg plays the boyfriend from hell, a smoldering bad boy who sets his sights on a 16-year-old good girl (an excellent Reese Witherspoon), much to the chagrin of her overprotective father (a pre- “CSI” William Petersen). The director James Foley, who made the marvelous “Glengarry Glen Ross” earlier in the decade, cheerfully embraces the conventions of the subgenre; “Fear” is trash, but it’s deftly made, deliciously entertaining trash.

‘Firestarter’ (June 30)

Little Drew Barrymore’s first film after the global sensation of “E.T.” was this sleek adaptation of a Stephen King book, directed with flashes of flair by Mark L. Lester (“Commando”). Barrymore stars as Charlie McGee, the daughter of a pair of test subjects in a government experiment involving mind-altering substances. As a result, her parents have telepathic abilities, and Charlie can control heat and fire with her mind — which makes her a target for the government, and a dangerous one at that. The loaded supporting cast includes Art Carney, Louise Fletcher, David Keith, Heather Locklear, George C. Scott and Martin Sheen.

‘The Holiday’ (June 30)

The writer and director Nancy Meyers continued her long run of wildly successful star vehicle romantic comedies (on the heels of “What Women Want” and “Something’s Gotta Give”) with this charming story of romantic shake-ups. Two stories, actually; two women, an American and a Briton (Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet), swap homes for a change of scenery during the Christmas holidays and unexpectedly find love (with Jude Law and Jack Black) in the process. Meyers’s touch is as light as ever, the performers’ charm levels are at peak intensity, and the cozy seasonal vibes still shine through in warm weather.

‘Hotel Transylvania’ / ‘Hotel Transylvania 2’ (June 30)

Stream ‘Hotel Transylvania’ here and ‘Hotel Transylvania 2’ here .

Adam Sandler’s most enthusiastic audience was typically teenagers and 20-somethings, but he savvily expanded that audience to include children with this astonishingly popular animated comedy franchise. The 2012 “Hotel Transylvania” made the most of its clever premise, in which Dracula (Sandler) runs a hotel for classic movie monsters, including Frankenstein (Kevin James), the Invisible Man (David Spade), the werewolf (Steve Buscemi) and Quasimodo (Jon Lovitz). Andy Samberg voices the human who has the misfortune of falling for Dracula’s daughter (Selena Gomez). The second installment, released three years later, focuses on their family, with the bonus of Mel Brooks as Dracula’s father. Needless to say, the “Hotel Transylvania” movies are silly, if not stupid; they’re also utterly harmless and frequently funny, so you could do a lot worse in the realm of family entertainment.

‘Out of Africa’ (June 30)

The Academy Award winner for best picture of 1985 stars Meryl Streep as Karen Blixen, the Danish writer who lived, loved and wrote in British East Africa (now Kenya) in the early 20th century. But this is no literary biopic; it is primarily the love story, of Blixen and Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford), a wealthy aristocrat. Sydney Pollack directs with the journeyman craftsmanship that was his stock-in-trade, while David Watkin’s cinematography is stunning. Both won Oscars.

ALSO LEAVING: “ A Single Man ,” ‘ Footloose ,” “ Godzilla ,” “ Inside Man ,” “ Kill Bill Volume 1 ,” “ Kill Bill Volume 2 ,” “ National Lampoon’s Animal House ,” “ Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby ” (all June 30).

Is ‘Young Woman And The Sea’ Streaming On Netflix Or Disney+?

  • Daisy Ridley

Disney Needs More Movies Like ‘Young Woman and the Sea’

Whoopi goldberg seemingly slips daisy ridley her number on ‘the view’: “stay in touch”, daisy ridley says her career after ‘star wars’ was “quiet and strange”: “there weren’t that many offers coming in”, daisy ridley admits she’s still upset by “divisive” reaction to ‘star wars: rise of skywalker’ five years later.

Exactly 100 years after Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle won her first gold medal at the Olympic Games, Walt Disney Studios is gearing up for the release of Young Woman and the Sea , which follows the competitive swimmer’s story as she becomes the first woman to swim 21 miles across the English Channel. Luckily, we have you covered on all the ways you can watch this biographical drama!

While the movie — which stars Daisy Ridley as Ederle — was originally slated for a Disney+ release, the studio ultimately opted for a limited theatrical release following positive test screenings.

So where can you watch Young Woman and the Sea? Is it on Disney+? What about Netflix?

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie:

WHERE TO WATCH YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA :

Young Woman and the Sea is slated for a limited theatrical release beginning Friday, May 31. You can find a local showing on Fandango . Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait until it becomes available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple , YouTube , and Amazon , or becomes available to stream on Disney+. Read on for more information.

WILL  YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA  BE ON DISNEY PLUS?

While a streaming release date for Young Woman and the Sea has not yet been announced, we can make an educated guess on when the film will come to Disney+ . Though there’s no set pattern, many Disney movies stream close to 45 days after their theatrical release, usually on the Friday after. If that’s the case, Young Woman and the Sea could be streaming on Disney+ as early as June 12, 2024, meaning the movie would be out just in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

However, other movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were released on Disney+ about 90 days after their theatrical debut. If Young Woman and the Sea follows the same trajectory, it may not join the streaming platform until late August 2024.

WILL  YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA   BE ON NETFLIX?

No, Young Woman and the Sea   will likely not be on Netflix since it will go straight to Disney+ after its theatrical run.

Ava DuVernay's 10 Best TV Shows & Movies, Ranked (According To IMDb)

Chris hemsworth's new 90% hit confirms he's fixed his rotten tomatoes struggles after post-avengers endgame dip, 10 movies where donnie yen fought another action icon.

  • Origin , written and directed by Ava Duvernay, receives a streaming release on Hulu on June 10 after a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Origin is highly acclaimed but underseen; it received standing ovations at film festivals and has an 82% critics score.
  • Despite strong reviews, Origin only made $4.9 million in theaters, but its Hulu release may change its popularity.

Origin , Ava Duvernay's 2024 movie with a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, receives a streaming release date. Written and directed by Duvernay – known for Selma , 13th , and 2018's A Wrinkle in Time – the biographical film is based on the life of author Isabel Wilkerson as she travels the world writing her 2020 book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents , which explores how historical caste systems influenced racism in the United States. The Oscar-nominated Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor ( King Richard ) leads the film's cast alongside Jon Bernthal, Emmy winner Niecy Nash-Betts ( Monster ), Finn Wittrock, Vera Farmiga, Connie Nielsen, and Nick Offerman.

Now, after its theatrical release earlier this year, Duvernay's latest film has received a streaming release date. According to Collider , Origin is coming to Hulu on June 10 . The movie has been available to rent/purchase on digital platforms since March.

Origin Is Highly Acclaimed, But Criminally Underseen

It made only $4.9m at the box office.

Considering its critical and audience response, Origin has arguably emerged as one of the best movies to be released in 2024 so far. However, considering its low box office numbers and overall little awareness among the general public, it's been criminally underseen. In September 2023, Origin screened at the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals to glowing reception and standing ovations. Overall, Origin reviews call it a compelling drama that boldly tackles profound questions and pays tribute to its source material with strong performances that help drive its deeply emotional narrative .

Due to its positive reviews, Origin 's Rotten Tomatoes score is 82% from the critics , continuing a trend for the acclaimed director, as almost all her films have received a "Fresh" rating on the review aggregator. This includes her 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. biopic, Selma , which boasts a near-perfect 99% Rotten Tomatoes score. Furthermore, her Netflix documentary about mass incarceration, 13th , has a 97% score, and her prior indie dramas, I Will Follow and Middle of Nowhere , have received 82% and 88% scores, respectively.

Ava DuVernay's Best TV Shows & Movies, Ranked

From award-winning movies to acclaimed TV shows, Ava DuVernay is a well-respected voice. Here are her 10 best works so far (according to IMDb).

Those who saw Origin have appreciated it, indicated by its 97% score with 500+ verified ratings from audiences, who also consider it an exceptional work that delivers impactful drama and a valuable message for viewers. The only problem so far is that Origin has been criminally underseen, making only $4.9 million at the box office on a $38 million budget . However, with Origin arriving on Hulu soon, hopefully its streaming availability will change that.

Origin is currently available to rent/purchase on digital platforms, such as Prime Video from $5.99.

Based on the life and the book of Isabel Wilkerson, Origin is a biographical drama film by writer-director Ava DuVernay. Isabel, contending with tragedy in her own life, sets off on a journey of self-discovery and inspiration to craft her award-winning book,  Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.
