Todayâs construction professionals face a highly competitive global engineering and construction environment that requires a fundamental understanding of management, technology, and finance, as well as business and legal principles. Talented managers know how to avoid costly delays, how to maximize existing budgets, and how to control a projectâs scope, among other valuable skills. Our program helps you acquire that expertise and prepares you to be a leader in the construction industry.
The program educational objectives (PEO) of the Master of Science in Construction Management are for you to learn management and leadership practices, how to apply innovative organizational, technological, planning, and financial tools to construction projects and programs, and the importance of effective communication with all construction industry players.
To gain admission to this program, you must hold a bachelorâs degree in a relevant field from an accredited undergraduate institution. You should also have a minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 3.00, although this requirement can be waived if you have sufficient professional experience in construction management. Related undergraduate backgrounds include engineering, mathematics, science, business, management, and the liberal arts. All candidates are expected to have sufficient background in college-level mathematics to allow for successful completion of the program. This requirement will be evaluated by a Construction Management Program Director. Students whose academic and professional backgrounds are deemed to be deficient may be required to complete additional undergraduate courses as a pre- or co-requisite to admission.
Find out more about Admission Requirements .
If you have taken courses as part of the Exec 21 Advanced Certificate Program in Executive Construction Management or the Advanced Graduate Certificate Program in Construction Management, you may apply them toward the MS in Construction Management degree.

Shonte’ Porche’ â21 MS in Construction Engineering and Management
Why did you choose UIC? The university was the only school in the state that offered the exact program that I was interested in.
Name one thing you think UIC does better than anywhere else: UIC is by far the most diverse institution that I’ve been a part of. I’ve met people from places around the world that I would have never imagined I’d come across.
What do you hope to be doing right after graduation? I recently restructured my company, Porche’ Property Group, from a property management firm into a development firm, Porche’ Development Group. I plan to redevelop dilapidated buildings in underserved low-income communities and repurpose them with the amenities that each community needs.
Looking broadly at your field of study, who is the person you admire the most, and why? Jane Jacobs! She’s known for her “Eyes on the Street” theory, which emphasizes the importance of a vibrant street life and neighborhood safety, and for her impact on the development of New York City. She reminds me so much of myself. Like her, I am a wife and mother of five! Also like her, when I look at a neighborhood or property, I don’t see it in its dilapidated state. I see it up and running with the residents of the neighborhood enjoying the amenities. Jacobs is known for bucking the status quo, and that is truly a reflection of how I’ve lived my life. She’s an inspiration and proof that what I want to accomplish can be achieved.

Kunal Sharma â21 MS in Construction Engineering and Management
Name one thing you think UIC does better than anywhere else: UIC makes sure that every student is treated equally. The faculty at UIC motivate students to get involved in various student organizations to develop a better professional network.
How (and why) did you choose your faculty advisor? I choose Hossein Ataei because of the knowledge he has in the industry. I believed that he would be the right person to guide me for my future.
How is UIC preparing you for your future goals? The courses allowed me to learn while working on real-time projects, which helped me to develop both technical and analytical skills. Also, the UIC Engineering Career Center offers different workshops and one-on-one sessions for developing the skills to excel at job interviews.
The best trip/vacation you’ve ever taken, and why: The Grand Canyon. This place has so much to offer: the scenic drive, the beauty of the canyons, and a peaceful atmosphere to spend your vacation.
Gabriela Heading link Copy link
Gabriela Gonzales â22 MS in Construction Engineering and Management
Why did you choose UIC? Attending university is more than an education. Sometimes it is our second home. It is life experience, knowledge, skills, confidence, and an opportunity to help people. UIC has all the requirements that I need to build my future with the tools and technology that it provides and the experience of the faculty members. I really enjoy it!
What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now? I hope to be professionally established working in my own construction company, having a family and being able to help immigrants who need work.
The best trip/vacation you’ve ever taken, and why: I went to Vallegrande/Santa Cruz in Bolivia, a small town where my dad was born and grew up. It is a beautiful and historical town that never changes and is recognized for the Carnival and the mausoleum in the honor of Che Guevara. The food is amazing. The warmth of the people and hospitality is amazing! The best part was that I shared the trip with my dad, and we had a quality time together.
Your primary hobby/outside interest: I love swimming, playing water polo, and going on long walks to Lake Michigan to enjoy the landscape.

Class of 2024: Jessica Fikac builds up those around her
The outstanding senior in construction engineering and management stepped onto Virginia Techâs campus with an open mind; itâs that same open mind that is keeping her in Blacksburg to complete her masterâs degree.

Name: Jessica Fikac
College: Engineering
Major: Construction Engineering and Management
Hometown: Bluemont, Virginia
Plans after graduation: Pursue a masterâs of science degree in civil engineering
Favorite Hokie memory: Participating in The Big Event with people she didnât know. The group started as strangers but after a few hours of planting flowers and trees for a local woman, they became friends and went to lunch together. âI think that goes to show how Virginia Tech is. No matter who you talk to or around, you're bound to make a new friend.â
From left to right: Jessica Fikac (third of five students) volunteers in the Blacksburg Community during the Big Event. Photo courtesy of Jessica Fikac.
For Construction Engineering and Management Outstanding Senior, Jessica Fikac, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) isnât just a motto, itâs a way of living. During her four years as a Virginia Tech student, sheâs been at the forefront of organizations dedicated to helping students in and out of her field.Â
âI donât join clubs and activities as a resume filler; I join to make valuable and honest connections,â said Fikac of her accomplishments.Â
Her drive to be passionate in every aspect of her college career started before she officially became a Hokie. She toured Virginia Techâs Blacksburg campus focused on architecture, but with an interest in the building and engineering side of the business. As she entered Bishop-Favrao Hall , the current home to Myers-Lawson School of Construction , she learned about the construction engineering and management program which offered a blend of all her interests. But the deciding factor? The people and family atmosphere of the school.
âThey were having a cookout for all the students that I was able to join. Everyone was so nice and welcoming,â said Fikac. âI was drawn to the community and diversity within the program. It felt like home.â
Building her Hokie family
Fikac felt the schoolâs signature family atmosphere on day one as she met other students studying construction. Through those connections, she joined the group Building Women in Construction and began to learn more about parts of the industry that piqued her interest. As she settled into her first year as a college student, she hit the ground running to create a space for women to connect. As the founding president of The Womenâs Network at Virginia Tech, Fikac joined the groupâs mission to redefine ambition by creating the next generation of leaders across all majors. As part of that goal, Fikac took the new group from a small executive board to a thriving organization with dozens of members and well-attended events, but the popularity wasnât what was important to her.
âI don't care if one person or 50 people show up to our meetings as long as that one person is taking something away from it,â said Fikac, who organizes everything from resume reviews to networking events and paint and sip nights.
The Womenâs Network is just one of the many extracurricular activities Fikac has been part of as a student, including:
- Women in Engineering Support Team for the Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity
- Small Group Coordinator for Changing Health Attitudes + Actions to Recreate Girls at Virginia Tech
- Event Coordinator for Help Save the Next Girl
- Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for Construction Engineering and Management
- Administrative Assistant for Outreach for Myers-LawsonÂ
With each new role, Fikac says intention comes along with it.
âI never shy away from opportunities that come my way; the best way to grow is to take on the things that make you uncomfortable,â she said. Â
Her ability to connect has led to several internships while at Virginia Tech: one in Alexandria, Virginia, with Rand* Construction Corporation, another with Hensel Phelps in Nashville, and this summer with MBP in Raleigh, North Carolina.
âI see internships as learning experiences. I always tell students to go in ready to learn about different types of work, cultures, and practices,â said Fikac.

Guiding the next generation
As Fikac completes her degree, she continues to mentor students who are just getting started â both in a formal capacity as an undergraduate teaching assistant and informally through presentations to new and prospective students about lessons learned during her time in the program.
Her passion for serving as a mentor and leader among her peers is one that her professors see clearly, including Charles Smith who teaches the class where Fikac is an undergraduate teaching assistant.
âOver my 35 years in professional practice, Iâve learned that people are either consumers or contributors,â said Smith who began his career in the construction industry. âJessica is not only a contributor as she serves others; she does so intentionally, selflessly giving her time and energy to help others flourish.âÂ
After Fikac graduates with her undergraduate degree, her life-long love for learning will bring her back to Virginia Tech to get her masterâs degree in the Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management program which is housed in the Charles E. Via Department of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering . There, she hopes to further explore innovation within the construction industry and how it can create a better work-life balance for its workforce.
âI am very passionate about education. Getting a graduate degree will help me understand how to speak on those innovations and how to implement them,â said Fikac of her decision to stay at Virginia Tech. âThis degree is my first step in understanding how to make a change in this world while focusing on my interests.â
As she prepares to move into the next chapter of her story, she will continue supporting new students and continue giving advice that is wise beyond her years.
âNever think of yourself as anything less because you know there are other people who have more experience than you. If you're bettering yourself and those around you, you will be successful,â said Fikac.Â

by Pete Rosenbery
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Since he was a child, Nathan Bulthuis has been “taking stuff apart and working with my hands.” That acumen will allow Bulthuis, a junior in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Automotive , to show his skills on an international stage this fall.
Bulthuis will represent the United States in automotive technology at the 2024 WorldSkills Competition , Sept. 10-15, in Lyon, France. The 47th annual contest is expected to bring more than 1,500 contenders from more than 65 countries to take part in 62 skills challenges, including construction and building technology, creative arts and fashion, manufacturing, engineering, transportation and logistics. He is one of nine members — the only one in automotive technology — on the 2024 WorldSkills USA team.
“Being selected for the United States WorldSkills team is an amazing opportunity to not only represent the country but also SIU Carbondale in international competition,” said Bulthuis. “It also provides an excellent opportunity to learn about other cultures and other strategies for designing and servicing vehicles.”
Bulthuis, who will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in automotive technology in May 2025, transferred to SIU Carbondale last fall after earning an associate degree in automotive service technology from Joliet Junior College. The Lockport Township High School graduate from Homer Glen was the Illinois state gold medalist in spring 2023 and won the national title in automotive service technology in August representing Illinois, just prior to starting classes at SIU.
Bulthuis said his first experiences working on cars were with his dad doing small jobs such as brake and oil changes. He took his first formal automotive class when he was a sophomore in high school.
“That is when I first started to consider a career in the automotive industry,” he said.
Training for the international stage
Capturing the two earlier titles helped Bulthuis “understand how I react to the pressure and stress of competition. The competition also helped me understand the areas where I need to focus my training.”
The contest in France will consist of five sections spread over three days and is “designed to test almost every skill a technician would use, particularly diagnostic process, attention to detail and time management,” Bulthuis said.
During the winter break, Bulthuis went to Pittsburg (Kansas) State University to train with automotive instructors there “who ran me through some stations that were set up to emulate the WorldSkills competition as closely as possible,” Bulthuis said. He will also be working closely with Drew Croxell, SIU’s program director, to develop and execute a training plan to help prepare.
‘Easy choice’ to attend SIU
After graduating from Joliet Junior College, attending SIU Carbondale’s nationally recognized automotive program was an “easy choice,” Bulthuis said.
“As much as I loved working on cars, it was not something that I wanted to do every day for the next 40 years,” he said. “Attending the automotive program at SIU Carbondale provided more opportunities on the management and corporate side of the automotive industry.
“The SIU Automotive program has definitely lived up to its well-deserved reputation as one of the best schools for automotive technology. There have been a lot of opportunities presented by attending the automotive program at SIU, and I look forward to exploring all the opportunities offered.”
Croxell said Bulthuis is “talented, sharp and is driven to succeed at the competition and represent SIU Automotive.”
SIU’s competitive admissions program has 310 students. Each year, dozens of transfer students with completed associate degrees seek to continue at SIU for their bachelor’s degree. The caliber of students the program receives “means our unique, four-year automotive degree is attracting top talent statewide and nationally,” Croxell said.
“We have the reputation of being the best program in the country, and those striving to be their best, will often see our program for the rich educational experiences and career opportunities.”
(Editor’s note: Bulthuis is pronounced Bul-tice)
