Apostolic exhortation ‘LAUDATE DEUM’ of Holy Father Francis on climate crisis

On Monday, March 27, 2023, Archbishop Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso celebrated his first solemn Mass in Jordan after his nomination as new apostolic nuncio to Jordan in January 2023 and following the presentation of his credentials to King Abdullah II on March 8, 2023.

In attendance at Our Lady of Nazareth Church in Sweifieh, western Amman, were Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem His Beatitude Pierbattista Pizzaballa , patriarchal vicars in Jordan and the Holy Land, Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in Jordan Msgr. Mauro Lalli , heads of C hurches in the Kingdom and their representatives, members of diplomatic corps, public figures, priests, nuns, heads of ecclesiastical institutions, and a large number of believers.

At the outset of the Holy Mass,  Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop Jamal D'aibes delivered a welcoming address during which he expressed the joy of the local Church while welcoming Archbishop Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso . He said: "Your presence with us is a clear sign of the love and care expressed by His Holiness Pope Francis in our Church and our country." He stressed that the cooperation between the local Church and the Apostolic Nunciature is intended for the good of the Church and the Jordanian society, as well as for the Christian presence in the Holy Land and the East.

After reading verses of the Holy Bible, Archbishop Dal Toso expressed great joy at his appointment as  apostolic nuncio to Jordan, as for the first time there is a resident apostolic nuncio in this country which provides evidence of the interest expressed by the Holy See, especially His Holiness Pope Francis.

He addressed the believers saying, "I begin my mission with humility and I am certain that only through mutual listening, with everyone in one's own position and special role, we can efficiently serve the Churches in this land, the land of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the entire people. " He also thanked everyone because he felt from the beginning the warm reception conveyed to him especially by His Majesty King Abdullah II.

Reflecting on the Biblical text (healing of the centurion’s servant), he indicated that the Bible presents the Roman centurion as a model of faith, and for this reason the Latin Church’s rite adopted his words before Communion: " Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed." He p ointed out that the Church presents this text to believers in the Lenten Season as an invitation to enter into a relationship of faith with the Lord.

He said: "This is the first mission of the Church, namely to inspire faith, to proclaim faith, and to support faith in Lord Jesus Christ because the Lord died, rose from the dead, and He promises all those who believe in Him eternal life. Lord Jesus Christ definitely heals and gives life because He rose from the dead and overcame whatever that denies our desire for life and happiness. Lord Jesus Christ did all this out of love by sacrificing His life to ensure us eternal life."

Archbishop Dal Toso added: "Therefore, our main mission is to reciprocate helping one another, and to help every person to live in faith, namely to trust in Lord Jesus Christ and place one's life in His hands, because the Lord is our life and our salvation. Therefore, the most important thing that the Church can do is to accompany every person in a personal encounter with Christ, so that, like the centurion, they may experience life and be healed by Him. "

He continued: "Consequently all Churches, despite their diversity, should feel unity in this regard by conveying Christ and His life to people of today. There is no Christian life without the Spirit of Christ. " He pointed out to the distinction enjoyed by the Churches of the Holy Land as they derive their faith directly from the life of the Lord Christ, Who became flesh, lived, and left marks of his earthly life on this holy land. He referred in particular to the Baptism Site, which is located a few kilometers away, and reminds us of our baptism, the gift of eternal life.

He said: "Since we know that Lord Jesus Christ wants to give life, we are also called upon to strive on Earth where the conditions relevant to healing, reconciliation, peace and serenity are given, with which life can germinate more freely. Therefore, the Church has always sought to help humans attain this concrete need, and therefore I would also like to express my gratitude to all in this country who are committed to the promotion of humanity, especially to the most vulnerable, as Pope Francis teaches us well. "

He added: The Church in this country feels called upon to bear witness to love, to seek peace and reconciliation among people, as well as calls on them in particular to attain this desire for life that is rooted in the depths of their hearts and shared by all. Therefore, the mission of the apostolic nuncio, who represents the Holy Father and the Holy See, is represented in promoting the desire for attaining the goodness and the life that every human being possesses within oneself, being created by God, and to encourage one to the bring about the unity of spirit so that we can all find the way to a civilization that respects life.

He pointed out that the Catholic Church cooperates, through the apostolic nuncios, with the leaders of nations for the sake of all people. He stressed that the Church can count on the generosity of those who rule Jordan, and expressed his support for the local Church that makes its own contributions in this way. In conclusion, Bishop Dal Toso called on everyone to pray for him so that he would carry out the duties entrusted to him,  while assuring everyone that they have in the apostolic nuncio is a friend and a brother who seeks with them the fulfillment of the goodness of the Church and its holy people.

Before the conclusion of the Holy Mass, Archbishop Dal Toso presented his credentials to Head of the Archdiocese His Beatitude Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa who delivered an address welcoming the apostolic nuncio, the representative of the Pontiff, on behalf of the local Churches, while emphasizing the need for prayer, support and cooperation for him in his new mission in the country of baptism.

After the Holy Mass, Archbishop Dal Tozo received well wishes in the church hall.

Baptists in Jordan: ‘An incredible success story’

By Don Kirkland

Published on October 31, 2006

The work of Southern Baptists in the country of Jordan began in 1951, and today it is considered “an incredible success story” by the International Mission Board’s regional leader for Northern Africa and the Middle East, John Brady, who considers Landrum his hometown.

presentation of the lord church amman

Brady, the son of former IMB missionaries Otis and Martha Brady of Landrum, met recently with nine Southern Baptist editors in the home of Nabeeh Abbassi, president of the Jordan Baptist Convention, and his wife Ruba, who is director of the international Arab Woman Today Ministries. He also is pastor of the Husn Baptist Church near Amman, the capital of Jordan.

The IMB has played a decreasing role in Jordan for good reason, according to Brady. The Jordanian Baptists – even though they are “not mature the way we would like to be,” Abbassi pointed out – have been “excellent stewards of what has been planted among them,” Brady emphasized, and are in a position now to “train their own pastors and construct their own buildings.”

presentation of the lord church amman

Brady said that IMB personnel in the region are putting most of their efforts into countries that are “100 percent Muslim,” which means, he explained, that approximately 98 percent of International Mission Board workers in Northern Africa and the Middle East are laboring “outside of Jordan,” even though they continue to “walk alongside the Jordanian Baptists in a “friendly, brotherly relationship.”

The Jordan Baptist Convention was established six years after Southern Baptists launched their work there, and today it is comprised of 20 churches with approximately 1,350 members, even though anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 of Jordan’s 6 million people attend the convention’s Baptist churches.

Baptist leaders in Jordan estimated that the country’s population is 5 to 10 percent Christian. It is estimated that 8,000 to 10,000 people in Jordan attend churches that are classified as evangelical.

Southern Baptists had a direct hand in establishing seven of the first Baptist churches in Jordan, who in turn planted the other 13 churches that now make up the Baptist convention.

While the Jordanian Baptists are largely on their own now, Brady informed the editors that the International Mission Board is working to link Baptists in Jordan with American churches and teams of volunteers in partnerships to assist the Jordanians in developing their resources.

presentation of the lord church amman

Meanwhile, the IMB is spreading its resources as widely as possible to reach the most people it can. According to Brady, there are 137 people groups in Northern Africa and the Middle East who lack a Christian witness.

The mandate of the International Mission Board is “not to the church, but to the lost,” Brady said.

In the early years of Southern Baptist work in Jordan, the International Mission Board founded a hospital in the town of Ajloun. The hospital is no longer there, but a Baptist camp is, and on the day of the visit by the editors a training session for local pastors and laymen was in full swing, led by Shaun Shorrosh, an IMB strategist who is a native of Lebanon but grew up in the United States. The IMB often rents the camp’s facilities for its training sessions to “mobilize the local church” – but the camp is operated by the Jordan Baptist Convention.

Currently, the conference center’s activities run through the summer, but a year-round schedule is needed to make ends meet financially.

presentation of the lord church amman

The Jordan Baptist Convention also operates two schools – one in Amman and the other in Ajloun. The Amman school has 1,250 students, with more than 500 of them in high school. Muslims make up 40 percent of the K-12 student body, with 60 percent of the students Christians. The student body is 5 percent Baptist.

The Amman school was established by the International Mission Board in 1974, but ended its sponsorship in the early 1990s. It is now self-supporting with “99.9” percent of its students going on to universities in Jordan or abroad.

presentation of the lord church amman

Suha Jouaneh Shanin, who earned her master’s degree at Samford University in Alabama, is the school’s principal.

The Ajloun school was founded in 1952 by the International Mission Board as a K-12 institution, but has dropped back to K-9. It hopes one day to return to a K-12 program. The IMB ended its affiliation with the Ajloun school seven years ago.

The school can accommodate 452 students, but has 280 now. Essar Mazahreh, who formerly lived in New Jersey where her parents still reside, taught at the school for 16 years before becoming principal a year ago.

presentation of the lord church amman

Presentation of the gospel through prayer, Bible reading and in the personal lives of the teachers is a vital part of the educational programs at both schools, Abbassi pointed out. A convention-operated Baptist bookstore also can be found in Amman, and even though it does not make much money, it is, according to Abbassi, a place where people “come to Christ.”

The pastor and convention president noted that such institutions as the schools and bookstore provide a setting in which evangelism can be carried out in a way that is not threatening, which he believes is vital to the future success of the Baptist witness in his country.

Abbassi is pleased to see that the Baptists in his country are growing in number and in spiritual maturity – and what is also important, they have a good image among the people of Jordan.

Presentation of the Lord to the Temple

February 14 of each year

presentation of the lord church amman

On Wednesday, February 14, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord to the Temple (Dyarnuntarach in Armenian, which means “bringing forward of the Lord”). This feast always falls on February 14—forty days after the Nativity (January 6). It commemorates the presentation of the Lord to the Temple by Mary and Joseph according to Mosaic Law (See Numbers 18:15). In the temple, a righteous and devout man named Simeon to whom it had been revealed that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord, took Jesus in his arms, blessed God and said, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” (See Luke 2:22-40)

Some pre-Christian Armenian customs have been incorporated into this feast, including one that remains popular to this day, especially in the Middle East and Armenia. In recent years the tradition has been revived here in the United States as well. On the eve of the feast, a bonfire is lit outside of the church using a flame from the altar. Young people, especially newlyweds, gather around the fire as the flames subside, the young men leap over the flames. The light of the bonfire is symbolic of Christ who is the Everlasting Life and Light of the world.

THE EVE OF THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST TO THE TEMPLE

  • February 14, 2024

Presided by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I, the Eve of the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ to the Temple (Diaruntarach) was solemnly celebrated on Tuesday, February 13 th , 2024, at St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Antelias. During the special service, Antasdan (Blessing of the Four Corners of the World), presenting the children to the altar for blessing, and the traditional bonfire took place.

Following the service, His Holiness Catholicos Aram addressed the faithful, emphasizing the significance of presenting Baby Jesus to the temple and the importance of preserving traditions. He underscored how traditions contribute to a nation’s self-understanding and encouraged Armenian families to uphold these age-old traditions.

Concluding the service, the grand sacristan HE Arch. Gomidas Ohanian brought a candle from the altar and presented it to the Catholicos, who initiated the lighting ceremony. Priests received the children and turned them around the Altar for the blessing. Subsequently, a procession, led by His Holiness, proceeded to the courtyard where the traditional bonfire was lit by His Holiness.
