• Tap the AA button in the URL address bar.

4. Use iOS Shortcuts

You can convert custom text or web articles to speech using free Siri shortcuts. Here are two such options from Apple’s own shortcuts gallery.

• Open the Shortcuts app and tap Gallery .
• Use the search bar to find Turn Text Into Audio & Speak Body of Article shortcuts and add them.

• Now, tap the Turn Text Into Audio shortcut, type or paste the text you want to convert to speech, and tap Done , followed by the play button . This reader shortcut will speak what you entered.

• To use Speak Body of Article , open a web page in Safari or Chrome, tap the Share button , and select Speak Body of Article . The shortcut will read the main content of that web article. However, you won’t see an option to pause it, and the only way to stop it midway is to force close the browser !

5. Use Google

Google has several handy tricks up its sleeves, and here are two you must know about!

Use it for word pronunciation

While you can’t follow this method to hear long phrases or sentences, you can use it for situations where you want to know the meaning of a word as well as hear how it’s pronounced.

• Visit Google.com in a web browser like Safari or Chrome.
• Type the word and search for it. For some words, you may also have to add ‘ meaning .’ For instance, freemium meaning .
• Tap the tiny speaker icon to listen to its pronunciation.

Listen to web articles

Just like Safari, the Google app on iPhone and iPad (not Google.com in a web browser) can read articles to you. Here’s how:

• Get the Google app and visit the news, tutorial, or other such web page. Make sure the page loads fully.
• Tap the three dots menu icon from the top right and choose Read Aloud .
• Google will read the article, and you can manage its playback using the on-screen controls. To change the reading speed and voice, tap the three dots icon and customize it accordingly.

6. Use text-to-speech iOS apps

1. Google Circle to Search Alternative Using Shortcuts

The lack of AI features on the iPhone became apparent when the Samsung S24 debuted with Galaxy AI . But now, with the Google app, you can use the Shortcuts app to create a sequence that takes a screenshot and then launches Google Lens to identify what’s on your screen. It’s not quite the same as circling something to search, but it gets the job done.

For example, I used the Action Button on my iPhone 15 Pro to quickly identify who was next to Jay Shah in a post. As soon as I triggered the shortcut, Google Lens identified Roger Binny, BCCI President (correctly).

2. Personal Voice – Clone Your Voice

Apple offers a feature called Personal Voice to help those at risk of losing their voice. This feature lets you clone your own voice by reading a series of text prompts that train the system. The process takes about 15 minutes, and then you’ll need to leave your iPhone charging overnight for processing. 

Once finished, you can use Personal Voice to communicate with friends and family on Apple services like FaceTime and even phone calls.

To enable your iPhone to speak in your voice, simply type what you want it to say. You can start creating a Personal Voice by going to Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice. Later, you can choose your own Personal Voice in Live Speech.

3. Ability to Recognize Pets in the Photos App

With iOS 17, Apple introduced the ability to recognize pets in your Photos app. This ability was previously limited to people only. In fact, you can now even name your pets and mark them as favorites.

While this feature has existed in iOS for multiple versions now, it has only gotten better with time.

For this to work, you must have it enabled in the Settings app > General > Language & Region > Live Text. Then, all you need to do is long-press a text line in a photo, and you’ll be able to copy it and paste it anywhere you want.

5. ChatGPT Voice Using Action Button

Using the Action Button, users can activate ChatGPT Voice with a single press, making it an AI assistant for your iPhone (sort of). However, unlike Siri, ChatGPT Voice lacks real-time data access and can’t perform tasks like fetching weather information or ordering items online.

It also doesn’t integrate with iOS features like toggling the flashlight or setting alarms. Despite these limitations, it has a significant use case and works well. To use it, you have to enter the Action Button submenu in Settings and choose ChatGPT – Start voice conversation as the Action of choice.

6. Better Autocorrect in iOS 17

Back at WWDC 2023, Apple announced that iOS 17 would use a transformer language model for on-device machine learning and word prediction while typing. This feature indeed launched with iOS 17, and since then, I, for one, can say that iOS’s autocorrect has significantly improved over its previous iterations.

This makes things a lot more convenient for those who rely on their phones for text-based conversations—which, let’s be real, is most of us. Now, to ensure that your autocorrect is on, open the Settings app, go to General > Keyboard, and turn Auto-Correction on or off.

Apple Is Bringing AI Transcription to Voice Memos, and I Can't Wait

The ai-powered feature is coming to ios 18 later this year..

I often use the iPhone’s Voice Memos at product briefings for interviews. As you can imagine, transcribing a 20-minute recording could be tedious. Thankfully, AppleInsider has learned of an AI-powered update coming to the Voice Memos and Notes apps on iPhone that will soon be able to transcribe and summarize voice memos on your phone.

According to AppleInsider, you’ll soon be able to go into your Notes app, which is also getting revamped, and see your recorded voice memo with fully transcribed text. The AI summarization feature will also summarize your voice memos with notes, which would be extra helpful in recording lectures, meetings, and panel discussions.

The feature is set to be a part of iOS 18 and will roll out in late 2024. Following the iOS release, we will soon see the feature on macOS 15 and iPadOS 18.

The area in the iPhone Voice Memos app that shows a graphic of the recorded audio will be replaced by a screen displaying live transcription. The Notes app will see a new speech bubble button that can be tapped to show the recorded transcription.

I’m curious to see how well this feature is going to perform. At the end of the day, it’s all AI, and it’s not perfect. I’m not sure if the transcription will work equally well for people with different regional accents. You also need to factor in things like speaking volume and room acoustics. I’m hoping that they will extend the feature to include other languages in the future.

This also makes me think about one of my critiques of the new Rabbit R1 : the device would be practically useless as soon as phones get smart enough to offer the same functionality (which will happen sooner than we think). The Teenage Engineering gadget promises a voice recording summarization feature along the way. Still, considering Apple is already rolling that out on our phones, we’d not use a dedicated device for that.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA  Apple today announced new accessibility features coming later this year, including Eye Tracking, a way for users with physical disabilities to control iPad or iPhone with their eyes. Additionally, Music Haptics will offer a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music using the Taptic Engine in iPhone; Vocal Shortcuts will allow users to perform tasks by making a custom sound; Vehicle Motion Cues can help reduce motion sickness when using iPhone or iPad in a moving vehicle; and more accessibility features will come to visionOS. These features combine the power of Apple hardware and software, harnessing Apple silicon, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to further Apple’s decades-long commitment to designing products for everyone.

“We believe deeply in the transformative power of innovation to enrich lives,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “That’s why for nearly 40 years, Apple has championed inclusive design by embedding accessibility at the core of our hardware and software. Powered by artificial intelligence, Eye Tracking gives users a built-in option for navigating iPad and iPhone with just their eyes. Designed for users with physical disabilities, Eye Tracking uses the front-facing camera to set up and calibrate in seconds, and with on-device machine learning, all data used to set up and control this feature is kept securely on device, and isn’t shared with Apple.

Eye Tracking works across iPadOS and iOS apps, and doesn’t require additional hardware or accessories. With Eye Tracking, users can navigate through the elements of an app and use Dwell Control to activate each element, accessing additional functions such as physical buttons, swipes, and other gestures solely with their eyes.

Music Haptics is a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music on iPhone. With this accessibility feature turned on, the Taptic Engine in iPhone plays taps, textures, and refined vibrations to the audio of the music. Music Haptics works across millions of songs in the Apple Music catalog, and will be available as an API for developers to make music more accessible in their apps.

With Vocal Shortcuts, iPhone and iPad users can assign custom utterances that Siri can understand to launch shortcuts and complete complex tasks. Listen for Atypical Speech, another new feature, gives users an option for enhancing speech recognition for a wider range of speech. Listen for Atypical Speech uses on-device machine learning to recognize user speech patterns. Designed for users with acquired or progressive conditions that affect speech, such as cerebral palsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or stroke, these features provide a new level of customization and control, building on features introduced in iOS 17 for users who are nonspeaking or at risk of losing their ability to speak.

“Artificial intelligence has the potential to improve speech recognition for millions of people with atypical speech, so we are thrilled that Apple is bringing these new accessibility features to consumers,” said Mark Hasegawa-Johnson, the Speech Accessibility Project at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s principal investigator. “The Speech Accessibility Project was designed as a broad-based, community-supported effort to help companies and universities make speech recognition more robust and effective, and Apple is among the accessibility advocates who made the Speech Accessibility Project possible.”

Vehicle Motion Cues is a new experience for iPhone and iPad that can help reduce motion sickness for passengers in moving vehicles. Research shows that motion sickness is commonly caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and what they feel, which can prevent some users from comfortably using iPhone or iPad while riding in a moving vehicle. With Vehicle Motion Cues, animated dots on the edges of the screen represent changes in vehicle motion to help reduce sensory conflict without interfering with the main content. Using sensors built into iPhone and iPad, Vehicle Motion Cues recognizes when a user is in a moving vehicle and responds accordingly. The feature can be set to show automatically on iPhone, or can be turned on and off in Control Center.

Accessibility features coming to CarPlay include Voice Control, Color Filters, and Sound Recognition. With Voice Control, users can navigate CarPlay and control apps with just their voice. With Sound Recognition, drivers or passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing can turn on alerts to be notified of car horns and sirens. For users who are colorblind, Color Filters make the CarPlay interface visually easier to use, with additional visual accessibility features including Bold Text and Large Text.

This year, accessibility features coming to visionOS will include systemwide Live Captions to help everyone — including users who are deaf or hard of hearing — follow along with spoken dialogue in live conversations and in audio from apps. With Live Captions for FaceTime in visionOS, more users can easily enjoy the unique experience of connecting and collaborating using their Persona. Apple Vision Pro will add the capability to move captions using the window bar during Apple Immersive Video, as well as support for additional Made for iPhone hearing devices and cochlear hearing processors. Updates for vision accessibility will include the addition of Reduce Transparency, Smart Invert, and Dim Flashing Lights for users who have low vision, or those who want to avoid bright lights and frequent flashing.

These features join the dozens of accessibility features already available in Apple Vision Pro, which offers a flexible input system and an intuitive interface designed with a wide range of users in mind. Features such as VoiceOver, Zoom, and Color Filters can also provide users who are blind or have low vision access to spatial computing, while features such as Guided Access can support users with cognitive disabilities. Users can control Vision Pro with any combination of their eyes, hands, or voice, with accessibility features including Switch Control, Sound Actions, and Dwell Control that can also help those with physical disabilities.

“Apple Vision Pro is without a doubt the most accessible technology I’ve ever used,” said Ryan Hudson-Peralta, a Detroit-based product designer, accessibility consultant, and cofounder of Equal Accessibility LLC. “As someone born without hands and unable to walk, I know the world was not designed with me in mind, so it’s been incredible to see that visionOS just works. Google Should Look Beyond the iPhone in Its Push to Improve Texting

Commentary: For the RCS texting standard to truly replace SMS and MMS, even more devices and services need access.

RCS texting needs to take the leap beyond the smartphone.

RCS texting is on its way to the iPhone , but Apple's phones are not the only ones that still lack access to the more modern texting standard. 

Google, which has invested considerably in building up RCS while touting promises of how it could bring typing indicators and higher-quality group chats, spent years pushing for Apple to adopt the messaging standard. It even built features into Google Messages like support for message reactions, in an attempt to make texting iPhone users a little less awful. Finally, by late 2023, Apple announced RCS support would be coming to iOS in 2024, bringing hope that improved texting between Android and iOS, complete with typing indicators and high-quality media, could actually happen.

If RCS is truly meant to replace the antiquated SMS and MMS texting that most phones have been stuck with for decades, it needs to arrive on all phones, not just Android phones or Apple's iPhones.

That includes basic phones, like flip phones and other minimalistic feature phones one might turn to for a "digital detox." That also means apps and services that rely on SMS to text a phone number, some of which Google itself makes, will need to adopt RCS. 

There's also a world of alternative Android texting apps that haven't yet been given access to RCS texting. 

It amounts to a lot of devices, services and apps that are still using SMS. RCS truly needs to be available across all mobile phones and texting apps, not just the iPhone, before we leave old standards like SMS and MMS behind for good. 

The Nokia 2780 can use Google Maps, but for texting it's stuck on SMS and MMS.

Basic flip phones could still use better texting

Basic phones are having their own kind of moment right now, resulting in retro flip phones and candy bar-style phones that have more features than ever. HMD, in particular, has spent the last few years continuing the Nokia phone line by creating basic phones that run on KaiOS, while also developing branded phones with companies like the recently revealed Heineken Boring Phone and an upcoming Barbie flip phone . The company's seen enough success with these devices that the analytics firm International Data Corporation reported that HMD held the lion's share of the feature phone market (30.7% by value and 22.4% by volume) in the third quarter of 2023.

Some of these HMD-developed phones even support a limited number of web apps and services, like Google Maps and in some cases WhatsApp. For instance, my colleague Jessica Fierro recently spent a week with the Nokia 2780 , during which she was able to use it to watch YouTube, get Google Maps directions and use the web browser for most other services. When it came to texting, the Nokia 2780 was limited to just SMS and MMS.

Although basic phones rarely crack the bestselling phone lists that often feature smartphones made by Apple and Samsung, these devices clearly have an audience who could benefit from having access to a more modern texting standard. While basic phones themselves are likely to stay limited to T9 texting because of their numerical keypads, the improved group chat support and typing indicators that RCS brings could be a massive efficiency boost for someone just trying to tap out a short text.

Zoom can be used for phone calls, but if you text with its phone number it's stuck on SMS.

Online services are still stuck on SMS

Services that provide virtual phone numbers have been around for a long time, and they are a convenient way of using another phone number without having to purchase a new line from a carrier. They provide features like forwarding calls to any other phone number you would like, enhanced voicemail support and SMS texting. That latter point is now part of the obstacle preventing RCS from supplanting SMS and MMS.

I have been a long-time user of Google Voice , as it provides an unlimited voicemail box for my calls while also providing an alternate phone number to use for any reason I want. I also use Zoom Phone as my work phone number, which lets me take calls either from my laptop or from any phone I happen to be reviewing at the moment.

Both services fit my needs well… except for messaging. It's frustrating that these tools are still stuck using SMS and MMS. That's especially the case with Google Voice since Google has been leading the RCS push with its Google Messages app. I hope these and similar services can soon get access to RCS, and hopefully get a better texting experience that will make them easier to use.

Android texting apps largely don't have RCS either

Although Android has been the main phone operating system providing RCS texting up to this point, that does not necessarily extend to third-party texting apps. One of the perks of Android is the level of customization it provides. You can swap the launcher if you want better home screen controls or set up a third-party app store if you need access to a service not natively provided by the Google Play Store.

For instance, before Google Messages added desktop support over a web browser, my Android texting app of choice was Pulse SMS . It provides broad access to one's texting app, whether on a phone or in native apps for Mac and Windows, along with web browser support.  Pulse SMS does not currently have RCS support , citing that Google has not yet provided a way for developers to integrate with it.

Considering Android's openness, it's odd that RCS integration isn't yet available to third-party developers. Google does work with other phone manufacturers when integrating with RCS. For instance, the Samsung Messages app that's still included as a texting option on Galaxy phones includes support for RCS. 

Beeper, for the time being, supports RCS in its third-party texting app, which relaunched on Android following its attempts to integrate with Apple's iMessage network . Beeper had to reverse-engineer its way into  integrating with Google Messages to make that happen. For now, it appears that Google isn't going after Beeper for this in the same way that Apple did when shutting off its iMessage integration .

It's clear that RCS still has a long way to go before it truly replaces SMS and MMS texting. We'll get our first look at how interoperable RCS texting really is when Apple's iPhone starts supporting the standard to share high-resolution photos and videos as  the company said last year , as well as more reliable group messaging, read receipts and location-sharing. Other features like encryption will depend on Apple's work with the GSMA to improve the RCS standard itself since Apple noted in its RCS announcement last year that the company will not use another company's encryption protocol -- possibly referring to the one Google Messages uses.

Perhaps since Apple is now working with the rest of the GSMA on the standard, RCS will improve and come to additional phones and services. It could be similar to what we're now seeing with the Qi2 wireless charging standard , which includes some of the improvements that Apple developed with its MagSafe charging . Yet until we see RCS become truly available across all devices and services, SMS and MMS will remain a dominant, yet antiquated, messaging standard.

Get live captions of spoken audio on iPhone

With Live Captions (beta) on iPhone, you can get a real-time transcription of spoken audio. Use Live Captions to more easily follow the audio in any app, such as FaceTime or Podcasts, and in live conversations around you.

Note: Live Captions is available on iPhone 11 and later when the primary language is set to English (U.S.) or English (Canada).

Apple set to deliver AI assistant for transcribing, summarizing meetings and lectures

Voice Memo Transcription in iOS 18

People familiar with the matter have told us that Apple has been working on AI-powered summarization and greatly enhanced audio transcription for several of its next-gen operating systems. The new features are expected to enable significant improvements in efficiency for users of its staple Notes, Voice Memos, and other apps.

Apple is currently testing the capabilities as feature additions to several app updates scheduled to arrive with the release of iOS 18 later in 2024. They're also expected to make their way to the corresponding apps in macOS 15 and iPadOS 18 as well.

The default Voice Memos application that Apple includes across its device portfolio will be among the first to receive upgraded capabilities. Early versions of the app provide a running transcript of each audio recording, operating similarly to the company's recent Live Voicemail feature.

The transcriptions occupy the central area of the application window, replacing the larger graphical representation of recorded audio found in the existing version of the app.

Transcription is also being pulled into the next version of Notes. Pre-release versions of both apps feature a dedicated transcription button in the form of a speech bubble, according to those familiar with the software. Tapping the new speech bubble will display a transcription of audio recorded within the app.

The transcription tool will go hand-in-hand with — and provide new context to — upcoming audio recording features in Notes, which were first detailed by AppleInsider in April. Specifically, the update will add an option for AI-generated summarization of recorded audio that instantly provides a basic text summary of the key focal points and action items.

The AI summarization feature, coupled together with the new in-app audio recording and real-time transcription options, is expected to make Apple's built-in Notes app a true powerhouse. The trio of features will serve to benefit a wide array of practical applications, taking on the heavy lifting of processing large amounts of data down to key focal points. This all translates to convenience and clarity at a glance for users.

Students would be able to easily record lectures and classes without relying on third-party tools. If recording from the new Notes app, there's an option to include a transcription and summary within a note, alongside other media such as images, links, and data structures like tables.

The features will also pay dividends for professionals who regularly attend conference calls, virtual business meetings, or seminars as part of their line of work. Such events often divulge large amounts of information, various statistics, detailed business plans, dates, and schedules that Apple's AI technology will analyze and reorganize into properly structured summary briefs.

The same applies to classes or lectures at more advanced levels that frequently include an assortment of information, such as definitions, explanations of complex ideas or theoretical principles, illustrative examples, and much more.

Meanwhile, journalists would gain an extremely efficient way of transcribing and summarizing lengthy interviews. Creatives such as authors and screenwriters could easily record key ideas and look through them later, without having to playback and listen to the majority of the recordings simply to isolate key data points.

Although Apple has gone to great lengths to ensure that its transcription and summarization features generate accurate results, mistakes are inevitable. Thus, maintaining the original audio alongside the transcript and AI-generated summary assures that none of the source information is lost in the transcription or summarization process.

Summarization is only part of a larger Apple AI effort

The new transcription and summarization features will be part of Apple's broader AI push by Apple this year. Similar summarization features are also expected to make their way to Safari 18 via Intelligent Browsing , and to the built-in Messages app — through integration with Apple's on-device AI software .

The use cases and overall purpose of AI-powered summarization features in Safari and Messages are completely different. Whereas Notes will give users the option to summarize meetings, conference calls, and lectures, Safari will allow for webpage summarization, while Messages will offer a condensed version of message contents.

Apple's AI software could also serve to protect its users' privacy, as certain AI features are expected to function entirely on-device. In the case of audio transcription and advanced AI summarization, however, server-side processing may be required for the time being.

By incorporating summarization and audio transcription into its system applications, the company looks to demonstrate some of the best use-case advantages of deploying AI to tackle real-world scenarios. The goal of Apple's AI endeavors is to provide developer features that promise to empower its customers to be more efficient and successful in their daily tasks.

At the same time, the company is hoping to better position itself against the proliferation of competitive third-party applications now utilizing AI technology, several of which have seen healthy adoption rates as consumers weave them into their digital lives.

The Otter application , for example, is another recipient of Apple's Editors' Choice Award. It offers similar functionality to the features discussed in this article. With it, users can record, transcribe, and summarize meetings via generative AI, all in one app.

Microsoft's OneNote also offers support for audio recording in the form of voice notes, serving as another potential rival for Apple's Notes and Voice Memos applications.

It's worth emphasizing, however, that not all software features that Apple tests in pre-release builds of software make it into the existing release cycle. Apple has been known to cancel projects or delay features to subsequent operating system releases and apps at the last minute, so there are ultimately no guarantees on timing and availability.

That said, the new AI summarization and real-time transcription features still appear to be on track for an expected unveiling alongside Apple's next-generation operating systems at the company's Worldwide Developers' Conference ( WWDC ) in June. They're expected to be joined by improved Calendar and Calculator apps , among others.

THIS is the sort of AI enhancement that is actually meaningful.  I have no use for hallucinating LLMs handling my e-mail or writing error-laden book reports.  I have no use for gimmicks.  Thank you, Apple for making something that improves my life.

Sure but we’ve had many of these tools already for years- economical but not exactly innovative.

So I assume transcript is on device and summarization is server-side? Anyways i did a voice to text note when I got trained to work closings in my job and it was great during the first couple of times and I didn’t have to double check with a coworker and bother them. So a summarized transcript would have been even better during that time.

MacOS has had a decent summarize feature since quite some time. Microsoft Ofiice has had background removal from photos also since quite some time. All these AI features, while useful, are not really anything new

On the surface this would seem to support the rumor of Apple using Google's on-device Gemini GenAI. The Pixel 8's were the first smartphones to do this on-device, and it required an update that installed Gemini Nano to accomplish it.
