The electronic version of the master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation must follow all formatting requirements set forth in the manual. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the thesis/dissertation appears as originally intended when it is accessed or printed.

The thesis/dissertation must be submitted as a single electronic Portable Document Format (PDF) file. If the original thesis/dissertation is a Microsoft Word or RTF file, you will be able to convert the thesis/dissertation to a PDF at the UCI Thesis/Dissertation Submission Site . If the doctoral dissertation is not in Microsoft Word, RTF, or PDF – e.g. LaTeX or WordPerfect – it must be converted to PDF before the student uses the Submission Site. Certain types of fonts and graphics work better with PDF, and special attention should be paid to creating equations for PDF conversions. Optional supplemental files (images, video, audio) that are an integral part of the thesis/dissertation but not part of the full text may also be submitted electronically

Guide to Writing Your Thesis in LaTeX

Step 1: install latex and a latex aware editor.

LaTeX is not a word processor, it is a document preparation system for high-quality typesetting. It is most often used for medium-to-large technical or scientific documents, but it can be used for almost any form of publishing. LaTeX encourages authors not to worry too much about the appearance of their documents but to concentrate on getting the content right.

Because LaTeX source files are just ordinary text files, any text editor can be used to edit them, but it is important to have a LaTeX aware editor. A LaTeX aware editor can do things like syntax highlighting, spell checking, and automatic formatting. It can also run LaTeX on the source files, update the bibliography, then update the document in a viewer all at the click of a button.

Below are links to what you need to get started on various operating systems. Check out the LaTeX Project website for more information.

Your system distribution or vendor has probably provided a LaTeX system. If not, check your usual software source for the texlive package, or otherwise install texlive directly. All of the Linux systems in the ELE Department already have a complete LaTeX system installed.

Two good editors for Linux are Texmaker and TeXstudio .

MacTeX is a full LaTeX system for MacOS which includes an editor.

The editors Texmaker and TeXstudio can also be used.

Microsoft Windows

proTeXt is a full LaTeX system for Windows, which includes MikTeX and an editor. You can also install MikTeX directly with the editor of your choice.

There are numerous good editors for Windows, some of which are TeXnicCenter , Texmaker and TeXstudio .

  • Lauren Goldenberg Longoria
  • Liz Stringer
  • Devin Wilson

The exhibitions are divided into two rounds, with the first featuring Alberto Lule, Gintautė Skvernytė, Joshua Thomen, and Mona Welch. Please join the department for an opening reception for "Part 1" on Saturday, April 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. "Part 2" will showcase the works of Lauren Goldenberg Longoria, Liz Stringer, and Devin Wilson, with their opening reception scheduled for Saturday, May 11, from 2 to 5 p.m.

These exhibitions not only highlight the artistic achievements of the M.F.A. candidates but also underscore the Department of Art's commitment to nurturing creative excellence and fostering a vibrant intellectual community.

Read further to learn more about the artists and their work. Both exhibitions will be held at the Contemporary Arts Center Gallery, University Art Gallery and Room Galler. Admission is free and open to the public.

M.F.A. Thesis Exhibitions, Part 1 April 20 – May 4, 2024 Opening: Saturday, April 20 from 2–5 p.m.

Alberto Lule  |  Displacement Erratic Examines the displacement of the body through various systems. Artworks attempt to find connections between overlooked systems of power, often seen as unrelated.

Gintautė Skvernytė  |  Switch Works shown: Paraffin Slides, Flicks (contact prints), Still, and a character named Sugar.

Joshua Thomen  |  On a Particularly Windy Day This latest exhibition of sculptures deepens a sense of animacy within the decorative, ephemeral, and unseen. Disparate ways of working come together to weave a quiet and wistful poem.

Mona Welch  |  7 Paintings for Spring A yellow painting, a blue painting, three brown paintings, a red painting, and a beige one.

M.F.A. Thesis Exhibitions, Part 2 May 11 – 25, 2024 Opening: Saturday, May 11 from 2–5 p.m.

Lauren Goldenberg Longoria  |  Sweet Spit Lauren Goldenberg Longoria’s paintings are vulnerable meditations of material, memory, and time. Rooted in a spirit of cannibalizing, Sweet Spit considers how her papermaking process simultaneously relates to the body, nostalgic objects in her grandmother’s home, and the compulsive desire to squeeze what’s oozing. These compact paper works are sympathetic to eachother in how they scaffold, disguise, and unearth.

Liz Stringer  |  The Showings Horror is the allure of the forbidden, and what is more forbidden than a body? The Showings is a sculptural procession of amalgamated ceramic, steel, copper, and resin that compound to articulate a body in various stages of protection and metamorphosis. Within this material drama, this existential narrative navigates the various ways in which monstrosity reveals a cultural understanding of a body and its corporeal dread.

Devin Wilson  |  The Pigeon Has Landed The Pigeon Has Landed explores the pigeon as the symbolic nexus of capitalism. Serving as both a reflection on obsolete technology in delivery services and an exploration of pigeons as agents of militarized spying, the project confronts the whimsical yet unsettling conspiracy theory that posits "Birds Aren't Real." Through the use of digital fabrication and advanced engineering processes, the work in the exhibition explores the satirical nature of internet meme culture which produces, replicates, and disseminates fictional narratives and misinformation.

MSE Special Seminar: Designing Sustainable Soft Matter from the Molecule Up

uci latex thesis

Abstract:  Soft matter constructed by nature harnesses chemically complex molecular subunits to generate finely tuned chemical, dynamical and mechanical properties over nano- to macro-scales, motivating the use of bottom-up strategies to realize functional synthetic materials. Here, I present how a molecule-up approach to the design of supramolecular and covalent polymers elicits unique structure-property relationships in materials to address urgent challenges in water treatment and plastics waste. First, I discuss the development of aramid amphiphiles, self-assembling small molecules that incorporate a Kevlar-inspired domain to impart strong, cohesive intermolecular interactions between molecules. Aramid amphiphiles spontaneously organize in water to form nanoribbons with suppressed dynamic mobility and mechanical properties rivaling silk. Combining the aramid amphiphile motif with chemistries to tune interfacial behavior enables the synthesis of high (~200 m2/g) surface area nanomaterials capable of treating thousands of liters of lead-contaminated water per gram of material. Next, I explore how the molecular design of lignin-derivable methacrylates enables the chemical recycling of the resulting covalent polymers, ‘closing the loop’ on high (> 100 °C) glass-transition temperature materials obtainable from industrial waste. Influences of monomer chemistry and reaction atmosphere are investigated to enable quantitative thermal depolymerization to monomer with high purity. The reclaimed monomers are then upcycled to narrow-dispersity and block polymers, demonstrating valorization of lignin-derivable molecules over multiple life cycles. Employing a molecule-up approach to soft matter formulation offers a pathway to realize novel properties in synthetic soft materials toward addressing generational challenges in sustainability.

Bio:  Ty Christoff-Tempesta is a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Delaware, where he researches performance-advantaged and closed-loop polymeric systems from renewable feedstocks. Previously, he completed his Ph.D. in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his research focused on molecular design to produce robust molecular assemblies and their application to pressing challenges in water treatment. Outside of research, Christoff-Tempesta has been actively involved in DEI initiatives and plastics sustainability efforts, including organizing the inaugural LGBTQ+ research symposium at the Spring 2024 MRS National Meeting and collaborating on single-use plastics policy as a fellow with the Massachusetts state government. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the Martin Society Fellowship for Sustainability, the Hugh Hampton Young Fellowship and the ACS CAS Future Leaders award.
