Badwe, Director of Tata Memorial Centre, said , “Tata Medical Centre has a track record of driving excellence in cancer care globally and aims to empower as many centres in India to drive the same vision of excellence in service, research and education. I have been closely associated with Balco Medical Centre and have seen their zeal to give high-quality and evidence-based cancer treatment to all patients who come to seek treatment. This association will help us to collaborate with the experts from BMC for mutual exchange of knowledge and conduct cancer research jointly. Interactions such as these will also allow assessment of viability of any new idea amongst experts in both the organizations”

Tata Memorial Centre is amongst the oldest and largest cancer centres in the world, with over 75 years of exceptional patient care, high-quality training and innovative cancer research.

Looking at the rising incidence of cancer as a health threat and lack of quality cancer care centres in tier 2 and 3 cities, Vedanta established BALCO Medical Centre at Raipur to provide affordable comprehensive cancer care to all the sections of the society. Since its inception in March 2018, the BALCO Medical Centre, a comprehensive cancer care hospital, has been garnering trust for its compassionate and quality cancer care.  It is one of the most preferred facilities in the region for advanced radiation therapy, brachytherapy, nuclear medicine, surgeries, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, blood-related disorders, bone marrow transplant, plastic and reconstructive surgery, pain & palliative care.

Breast cancer prevention: act early, by team vedanta.

Every year, October is marked as the Breast Cancer Awareness month, a yearly campaign that educates and spreads awareness about breast cancer. World over, including India, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. With early detection breast cancer is curable. However, not everyone is aware of the risk factors, signs, symptoms, treatment, and the ways to prevent or lower the risk of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the abnormal growth of cells lining the ducts and lobule. It can appear on any part of the breast and then spread to different parts of the body, if left untreated. While breast cancer can occur at any age after puberty, it is more common among women who are over 40 years of age. The ICMR-NCDIR National Registry Programme 2020 has observed a significant increase in the incident rates of breast cancer among women, in India. According to the Registry, breast cancer is estimated to contribute about 14.8% of the total cancer burden.

  • Painless lump : Lump on the breast or underarms: This will be mostly painless, however, it is one of the major symptoms that require your immediate attention.
  • Change in contour or symmetry : Inconsistent size of the breast or change in shape: If you notice any change in the size or shape of either of the breasts, it is a sign you mustn’t ignore.
  • Skin changes : Peau d'orange or orange peel appearance, redness or rashes on the breast: This could also be a skin problem, nonetheless it is also one of the symptoms of breast cancer and should be examined by your doctor.
  • Nipple Retraction or bloody discharge from nipple : If you suffer from any form of discharge from your breasts, particularly, blood, immediately consult your doctor.

Risk Factors and Ways to Prevent Cancer: As women grow older, the risk of suffering from breast cancer also increases. The chances are higher if a blood relative has breast or ovarian cancer. Thus, it is always better to visit a doctor if you notice the slightest signs and symptoms to avoid greater risks. In fact, experts recommend treatment at the early stage for a more effective result. Besides, women who are forty years or above are advised to get their mammography done yearly for screening.

What are the ways in which we can prevent or lower the risk of breast cancer? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), between 30 and 50% of cancer cases are preventable, which is the most cost-effective long-term strategy to fight against cancer.

Here are some key recommendations from WHO to prevent or reduce premature mortality through cancer and the main risk factors:

  • Tobacco/alcohol Consumption : This is one of the major causes of cancer and a big risk factor that should be avoided to prevent higher chances of mortality.
  • Diet : Fried food and packaged should be avoided
  • Physical Inactivity : Lack of physical inactivity is one of the reasons for obesity, which is again a leading cause of cancer. Begin regular physical activities like walking, running, and exercises and maintain proper body weight to reduce your chances of getting cancer.
  • Breastfeeding : Adequate breast feeding should be encouraged in all the females
  • Use of Hormonal therapies : This is one of the risk factors for breast cancer. The use should be minimised.
  • Radiation exposure : Avoid unnecessary and excessive exposure to radiation, particularly UV radiation to reduce the risk of any form of cancer.

Our Many Initiatives Although cancer is one of India's most prevalent and severe diseases, often leading to death, there are dearth of good hospitals and quality care, particularly in India’s smaller cities and rural areas. To combat the significant rise in cancer cases across India, its seriousness, and poor-quality care and treatment, Vedanta established BALCO Medical Centre, in Naya Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The aim is to provide quality care, and world-class treatment at an affordable rate for every sector and section of society. BALCO Medical Centre is a 170-bed state-of-the-art tertiary care Oncology facility, the first flagship initiative of Vedanta Medical Research Foundation (VMRF). Through this initiative, Vedanta is not only meeting the needs of cancer patients but transforming their lives and changing the landscape of healthcare.

In 2021-22, BALCO Medical Centre performed several complex clinical procedures, one of them being Lateral intercostal perforator artery flap, Inferior epigastric artery (DIEP) flap for microvascular reconstruction for breast cancer. This was a first in Chhattisgarh. Moreover, the medical centre is also renowned for its advanced treatment of bone and lung cancer and is the first hospital in the State to perform Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant.

As India was grappling with COVID, Vedanta established a 100-bedded BALCO Care Field Hospital, with advanced facilities, for covid patients, within the BALCO Medical Centre premises. With their team of doctors, nurses, specialists and paramedic experts, BALCO Medical Centre helped the Country combat this deadly wave.

In the year 2021, BALCO Medical Centre was conferred with CG Ratna 2021 award. The Medical Centre treats lakhs of patients from across the Country.

On September 17, 2022, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai and Vedanta Medical Research Foundation’s BALCO Medical Centre, Raipur signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to drive excellence in cancer care in India. Together, the two hospitals aim to develop best-in-class technical and medical guidelines, provide excellence in patient care, conduct joint research or multi-centric trials, exchange ideas, and share practices and knowledge on cancer treatment.

Vedanta’s BALCO Medical Centre Bags Prestigious Cancer Grand Challenges Award, a First for India

  • First Indian co-researchers team to receive $25 Million Cancer Grand Challenges award
  • Esteemed award granted by Cancer Grand Challenges – a global research initiative co-founded by Cancer Research UK and National Cancer Institute US, two of the largest global funders of cancer research
  • BMC is a state-of-the-art oncology institution serving a patient base of 37,000 in Central India

New Delhi : Vedanta’s BALCO Medical Centre (BMC), an emerging leader in India’s oncology space, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian co-researchers in a team to receive the prestigious Cancer Grand Challenges Award. This recognition, with a substantial $25 million grant for cancer research, underscores BMC’s position as a pioneering institution in India’s oncology landscape. The recipient team PROSPECT, comprising of clinicians, advocates, and scientists from BALCO Medical Centre and other esteemed institutions around the world, will be addressing the critical issue of early-onset cancers challenge.

Ms. Jyoti Agarwal, Chairperson, Vedanta Medical Research Foundation,  expressed her gratitude, stating, “ We are honoured to have been chosen for this prestigious award, which significantly advances the battle against cancer. Over the past six years, at BMC, our leaders, employees, and stakeholders have worked tirelessly to ensure that we have access to the best technologies, and that our patients and communities feel safe and confident. With this support from Cancer Grand Challenges, our efforts are not only continued but also strengthened. With collaborative efforts, I am confident that we can positively contribute to the overall healthcare landscape.”

Team PROSPECT is one of five global teams being funded this year by Cancer Grand Challenges, which was founded in 2020 by Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute US, to invite diverse world-class research teams to come together, think differently and take on some of cancer’s toughest challenges. The teams will be funded by Cancer Research UK, the National Cancer Institute, the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK and Institute National Du Cancer through Cancer Grand Challenges with a total investment of $125m to tackle some of the toughest challenges in cancer research.

“ Together with our network of visionary partners and research leaders, Cancer Grand Challenges unites the world’s brightest minds across boundaries and disciplines and aims to overcome cancer’s toughest problems ,” said  Dr. David Scott, Director of Cancer Grand Challenges . “ With this investment, our largest to date, we continue to grow our global research community, and fund new teams that have the potential to surface discoveries that could positively impact cancer outcomes .”

Vedanta’s BALCO Medical Centre, a state-of-the-art tertiary care Oncology facility in Central India, has been at the forefront of cancer care, providing multidisciplinary treatment and support. The institution is recognized as a referral centre for advanced radiation therapy, brachytherapy, nuclear medicine, surgeries, chemotherapy, and many more. Since inception in March 2018, BMC has treated more than 37,000 patients. Additionally, the institution has received many certifications and accreditations including LEED certification, NABH, FSSAI, NABL, Nursing Excellence, CAHO certifications. This significant grant underscores BMC’s commitment to pioneering research and delivering innovative solutions to address critical healthcare challenges in India.

Dr. Bhawna Sirohi, Medical Director at Vedanta Medical Research Foundation (BALCO Medical Centre) and the lead principal investigator for PROSPECT-India study,  says “ The worrisome increase in colorectal cancers stresses the importance of early detection and lifestyle choices for prevention. There’s a dire need for cancer screening in high-risk areas to facilitate early diagnosis and prompt treatment, especially with the shifting demographics towards a younger population. This grant will speed up global cancer research, focusing on understanding the reasons behind the rise in early-onset colorectal cancer and strategies for prevention”.

Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) is an important emerging global problem among individuals younger than 50 years. Team PROSPECT aims to address this by understanding the pathways, risk factors and molecules involved in its development. The team’s vision is to understand and ultimately try to reverse the network of causal factors throughout the life course that disrupts normal biological processes to promote EOCRC. The team will employ a disruptive, transdisciplinary approach spanning cells, individuals and populations to uncover the mechanisms linking lifetime exposures to early-onset colorectal cancer, and test new strategies to combat this cancer type.

Currently, Cancer Grand Challenges brings together 1,200 researchers and 16 teams from across the world to take on 13 challenges. The spirit of giving back is part of the Vedanta’s core values. This achievement brings the company closer to fulfilling the vision of contributing to the community and making a lasting impact on society.
