“I had to take the time during this unprecedented world event to acknowledge your company and its absolutely fine work. About a year and a half ago, I reached out to your company after hearing about your product through the Chester County Intermediate Unit. I was put in contact with (our local Mackin Consultant). That contact is the biggest single decision I can point to as completely changing my practice as a middle school librarian.”

“Mackin is very quick to process orders which makes a huge difference in planning with teachers. Any questions I have get answered. There are videos to help understand some of the processes for MackinVIA which were helpful. I love using Mackin.”

Nike Debuts First Shoe in Devin Booker Partnership, Nike Book 1

Nike Debuts First Shoe in Devin Booker Partnership, Nike Book 1

Original content published: September 14, 2023

It’s official: Devin Booker, the all-star basketball player, has officially joined Nike’s signature family. Kicking off the collaboration, Nike has released the Nike Book 1, the first installment in Booker’s signature series with the brand, set to be released spring 2024.

Featuring both lifestyle aesthetics and performance functionality, the shoe invokes Booker’s playing style: classic with heavy focus on mastering the game. “Early on, we landed on the phrase ‘future classic,’” Booker said. “At the beginning of the design process, we landed on the idea of the shoe combining lifestyle and performance worlds. The goal was to create something that would be timeless.”

Nike Debuts First Shoe in Devin Booker Partnership, Nike Book 1

According to a press release shared by Nike, to begin the design process of the Nike Book 1, Booker provided a handful of shoe silhouettes he found especially attractive, including the Air Force 1, Blazer, and AJ1. A creative thinker on and off the court, Booker shared inspiration outside of footwear, too, namely one of his restored vintage cars, a 1972 Chevy Blazer K5, which he lovingly calls “Uncle Larry.”

With plenty of creative foundation laid, the vision of the shoe was clear: provide athletes footwear that celebrated Booker’s playing style with his love of classic design. The result? The Nike Book 1 features elements that help with lateral stability, cushioning, and underfoot responsiveness, the same release said. Under the hood of the shoe, as it were, Nike design teams layered Cushlon 2.0 foam within the midsole and “a rigid TPU sidewall for added support, with a top-loaded Nike Zoom air bag in the heel,” the release said.

Just like his beloved Chevy, the outside of the shoe is all about the aesthetics coupled with purpose. For example, work-wear canvas and twill on the upper provide further durability. Meanwhile, a suede collar and leather across the forefoot contribute to a plush and broken-in feel.

Coming spring 2024, the Nike Book 1 will be available in two signature colorways.

Utah officials unsure how to enforce new statewide book ban retroactively — but it may mean more work for public schools

The state school board is “still in the process of mapping out implementation.”.

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) A woman walks past dozens of banned books displayed on a table in Weller Book Works in Trolley Square for Banned Book Week in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023.

Six Utah school districts have banned Jessie Ann Foley’s young adult novel “ The Carnival at Bray ” — but each for a different reason.

Davis School District cited violations of Utah’s criminal code regarding “ indecent public displays, ” while Nebo School District said it removed the title due to low circulation. Washington School District noted “illicit” descriptions of sex.

The three others — Alpine, Canyons and Granite school districts — cited no reason at all.

At least 35 other titles have been banned by three or more Utah school districts for various reasons, according to an analysis by The Salt Lake Lake Tribune — but none for the specific criteria that would lead to a statewide ban under a brand new Utah law.

That new law, starting July 1, will prompt all public schools across the state to remove a book from shelves if at least three school districts (or at least two school districts and five charter schools) specifically determine it amounts to “objective sensitive material” — pornographic or otherwise indecent material, as defined by Utah code .

The law, which Gov. Spencer Cox signed this month , is also supposed to apply retroactively, potentially putting those at least 36 books already banned by three or more school districts in limbo statewide.

The problem is, officials are unsure how to retroactively enforce the law. That’s because a statewide “objective” sensitive material standard has never existed. Until now, districts weren’t required to use that terminology when making removal determinations.

Will districts and charters need to re-review banned books to determine which ones amount to “objective” sensitive material? Or will titles that have already been removed by three or more districts under the former law be banned statewide automatically?

Those questions and more remain unanswered.

“[The Utah State Board of Education] is still in the process of mapping out implementation,” said Sharon Turner, director of public affairs for the USBE.

The state school board has been charged with overseeing and creating the process for a book’s statewide removal.

“We need to consider all options as to best support our districts,” Turner said.

New removal standards trump local process

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) A "read-in" put on by Let Utah Read to protest the book ban bill at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024.

Once that process is determined, it could mean major policy changes for all Utah school districts.

“We are just beginning to unpack the new ‘sensitive materials review’ amendments along with many other education-related bills that were passed this year,” said Kirsten Stewart, spokesperson for the Canyons School District. “We also await guidance from the Utah State Board of Education, which will factor into our policy reviews.”

Before the new law, schools evaluated sensitive materials according to a 2022 law , which required them to remove titles from student access if they contained “pornographic or indecent content.” Its teeth lay in a section of Utah criminal code that prohibits access to such materials on school property.

Renée Pinkney, president of the state’s largest teacher’s union, called the new law “anti-democratic,” arguing that it stands to burden school districts while eroding local control.

“Our districts were required to create a process to go through any book that was challenged at the local school board level, and they have done that,” she said. “They’ve created those processes, and they’re working. And now, to say that only three districts or two districts and five charters can make the decision for the entire state, you are taking away the power of the local school board members that were duly elected by their community members.”

The new law includes the previous definition of “sensitive” materials but also asks schools to evaluate a key difference — whether the material is objectively or subjectively sensitive, under the newly introduced removal standards. That distinction is important because “subjective” sensitive material determinations will not lead to a statewide ban, according to the law.

Both standards pertain to material that is considered pornographic or indecent, but “objective” sensitive material specifically involves content that violates a section of Utah criminal code regarding “indecent public displays” — any descriptions or depictions of sex or sexual stimulation.

In simpler terms, lawmakers have described “objective” sensitive material as “inherently” pornographic .

“Subjective” sensitive material may not meet the state’s definition of pornography or “indecent public displays,” but would otherwise be considered “harmful” to youth .

Can the state school board intervene in retroactive cases?

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) A shelf labeling banned books at Ken Sanders' Children's Reading Room at the Leonardo in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022.

There’s another looming uncertainty about the new law applying retroactively: If books previously banned by enough districts or charters do trigger the statewide ban, would the state school board still have the option to intervene?

According to the new law, state board members can reverse a ban triggered by that statewide removal threshold if they convene a hearing within 60 days to consider reinstating it.

If no hearing is held, the statewide removal stands. But if board leaders vote to reinstate a book, the statewide ban is overturned.

USBE officials did not say whether they plan to exercise that option come July, or whether the 60-day time limit would apply for any retroactive cases.

Gretchen Zaitzeff, president of the Utah Educational Library Media Association , said the new law will likely lead to “self-censorship,” with school librarians buying fewer books that address difficult topics out of fear they might not comply with state law.

UELMA was one of several literary and education organizations — as well as the Utah chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union — that penned an open letter to Cox urging him to veto the bill. Cox didn’t respond to the letter, Zaitzeff said.

“It’s a slippery slope of censorship,” Zaitzeff said. “[Students] will have less access to books about difficult topics that they may actually want to read.”

Supporters of the law have argued it’s about protecting children from accessing porn , but Zaitzeff, who is also the Canyons School District library specialist, argued “we have a semantics problem.”

“The foundational definition used to describe ‘sensitive materials’ is different than the legal definition used to describe pornography,” she said. “... If these works that are under reconsideration were actually pornographic, they would have been out of school long before today.”

Library Afro Revolution: A celebration of diversity, literacy, and self-love inspires community unity

M ychat Threets always envisioned having a Library Afro Revolution to unite individuals in honoring diversity within the local library.

On Saturday in Fairfield, that’s exactly what he got.

The Solano County Library, in collaboration with influential social media figures Threets and Blair Imani, presented “The Library Afro Revolution: A Celebration of Hair and Beauty” at the Fairfield Civic Center Library. The free and open event celebrated hair appreciation, inclusivity, and community spirit.

The event included book giveaways, face paintings, photo booths and games. Accompanying the festivity were skilled barbers, hairdressers from Crowns Barber Shop, and the hosts themselves, renowned advocates for social justice and education.

Threets, who is stepping away from the Solano Library due to mental health reasons, promotes inclusivity and literacy and gained popularity from TikTok with over 700,000 followers.

“Right now I’m still not totally OK, but I’m getting closer to being OK,” Threets said. “I’m doing very cool things with libraries across the nation with PBS Kids and the Children’s Literacy Initiative. This event is a very cool way to celebrate hair, love, beauty, and just anyone who needs self-love.”

Threets and Imani are notable online figures who promote literacy, social engagement, and empowerment. Threets, a librarian and notable social media personality, has been recognized recently by The Guardian and Rolling Stone magazine, while serving as a resident librarian for PBS Kids.

California currently has the lowest adult literacy in the nation, with 23.1 percent of adults lacking basic prose literacy skills, leaving the state with the lowest literacy rate, 76.9 percent.

“I’m very saddened by it, the low adult literacy, because there are not enough school librarians,” sai Threets. “That’s my mission, to ensure that a school librarian and every school have enough resources. We honestly need more, we need more funding.”

Imani, creator of the popular web series “Smarter in Seconds” and besting author, also co-owns Fempower Beauty. She explores themes of intersectionality and United States history in her writings, including Making Out Way Home (2020) and Modern Herstory (2018).

“I think that right now these conversations that are happening, especially in Florida, around banning books are dangerous,” Imani said. “We’re celebrating the community or essentially the black community, but it’s not just for us. Some people take reading for granted and it’s something that could open doors and change somebody’s trajectory in their life.”

She has advocated for LGBTQ+ rights and religious freedom for Muslims. Together, they champion education, empowerment, and social change.

“Everybody in the world has something about them that doesn’t fit into society’s expectations,” said Imani. “I try to be more focused on being around the people who love me for who I am not, as long as you’re not hurting yourself, or anyone else, however you exist and express yourself is valid.

Harvard will remove binding made of human skin from 1800s book

University says first owner of book by French novelist took the skin from a deceased female patient without consent

Harvard University has said it will be removing the binding made of human skin from a 19th-century book held in its library because of the “ethically fraught nature” of how the unusual binding took place.

The book, called Des Destinées de l’Ame (or Destinies of the Soul), has been held at the university’s Houghton Library since the 1930s but drew international attention in 2014 when tests confirmed that it was bound in human skin .

On Wednesday, however, the university said that after “careful study, stakeholder engagement, and consideration” it would remove the skin binding and will work with authorities to “determine a final respectful disposition of these human remains”.

The book was written by Arsène Houssaye, a French novelist, in the mid-1880s as a meditation on the nature of having a soul, and life after death. The volume’s first owner, the French physician Ludovic Bouland, then bound the book with human skin. Harvard said that Bouland took the skin from a deceased female patient in a hospital where he worked, without consent.

This troubling history, which Harvard called “ethically fraught”, led the university to decide to remove the skin binding.

“As you can imagine, this has been an unusual circumstance for us in the library and we have learned a great deal as we arrived at our decision,” said Tom Hyry, an archivist at Houghton Library, in a Q&A issued by Harvard announcing its decision to remove the book from its library.

“ The core problem with the volume’s creation was a doctor who didn’t see a whole person in front of him and carried out an odious act of removing a piece of skin from a deceased patient, almost certainly without consent, and used it in a book binding that has been handled by many for more than a century. We believe it’s time the remains be put to rest.”

In the past, Harvard students employed to page collections in the library were subject to a hazing ritual where they were asked to retrieve the book without being told it was covered in human remains.

The confirmation of the book’s strange binding in 2014 was, at the time, also treated in a more light-hearted manner by Harvard. The university called the discovery “good news for fans of anthropodermic bibliopegy, bibliomaniacs and cannibals alike”. Anthropodermic bibliopegy is the practice of binding books in human skin, something which enjoyed a spate of popularity in the 19th century, but which has occurred since at least the 1500s.

Harvard said that it now regrets the “sensationalistic, morbid, and humorous tone” in which the discovery was announced.

“We apologize on behalf of Harvard Library for past failures in our stewardship of the book that further objectified and compromised the dignity of the human being at the center,” said Hyry.

Book made with dead woman's skin removed from Harvard Library amid probe of human remains found at school

By Li Cohen

Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 8:59 AM EDT / CBS News

Harvard Library says it has removed a book that's been in its collection for nearly a century that is partially made with human skin that was taken from a deceased hospital patient without consent. The book's space in the library has long been in question, as it was bound with a woman's skin and included a handwritten note from its first owner saying, "a book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering."

The library announced that it would remove the book, "Des Destinées de L'âme" ("Destinies of the Soul"), earlier this month. The book, published by Arsène Houssaye in 1879, was not originally made of skin. That part was added by the book's first owner, French physician Dr. Ludovic Bouland, who, according to Harvard Library, "bound the book with skin he took without consent from the body of a deceased female patient in a hospital where he worked."

master-headlines-16x9.png

Bouland included a handwritten note in the volume that says, "a book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering," Tom Hyry, associate university librarian for archives and special collections, said in a Harvard Library update.

"Evidence indicates that Bouland bound the book with skin, taken from a woman, which he had acquired as a medical student," Hyry said. "A memo accompanying the book written by John Stetson, which has since been lost, told us that Bouland took this skin from the body of an unknown deceased woman patient from a French psychiatric hospital."

Bouland died in 1933 and the book was added to Harvard's collection in 1934 on deposit. That note also included a description of the process that was used to treat the skin so that it could be bound with the book. The book was formally donated to the university in 1954 and Harvard Library said that it tested the binding in 2014 to confirm that it was bound with human remains.

Until recently, the book had been available to "anyone who asked for it," Harvard Library said, "regardless of their reason for wishing to consult it."

"Library lore suggests that decades ago, students employed to page collections in Houghton's stacks were hazed by being asked to retrieve the book without being told it included human remains," the library states. "Harvard Library acknowledges past failures in its stewardship of the book that further objectified and compromised the dignity of the human being whose remains were used for its binding. We apologize to those adversely affected by these actions."

Anne-Marie Eze, associate librarian of Harvard's Houghton Library, said the book's removal was the culmination of years-long efforts and "as part of the University's larger project of addressing human remains in its collections."

In 2022, the university published a report about human remains found in university collections. A committee found remains of 15 people who "may have been enslaved" in the Peabody Museum, which also holds "one of the nation's largest collections of human remains of Native American individuals." Most of the human remains found across the university collections system are rooted in archaeological context or are used for educational purposes.

The book was not included in that category – and it's not the only piece of human remains believed to be in the library system.

"There is a bone fragment purportedly of Saint Sebastian (ca. 3rd century) in a medallion reliquary," the report states.

The library says that it's now conducting additional research into the book, Bouland and the female patient whose skin was removed, and that the skin itself is in "secure storage at Harvard Library." They are also working with France to "determine a final respectful disposition of these human remains."

Eze said that the book has been "fully digitized" – sans binding – and that those scans have been made publicly available. All images of the skin have been removed from the online catalog and blog posts, and the book itself will only be made available to researchers in the future without its cover.

"The core problem with the volume's creation was a doctor who didn't see a whole person in front of him and carried out an odious act of removing a piece of skin from a deceased patient, almost certainly without consent, and used it in a book binding that has been handled by many for more than a century," Hyry said. "We believe it's time the remains be put to rest."

Harvard Library announced that it has removed human skin that was used to bind a book from the 1880s.

The copy of Arsène Houssaye’s "Des destinées de l’âme" was found in the Houghton Library and has been part of the university's collections since 1934, according to a news release from the university.

The removal follows a 2022 report from the Harvard University Steering Committee that discussed how human remains are used in university museum collections.

"After careful study, stakeholder engagement, and consideration, Harvard Library and the Harvard Museum Collections Returns Committee concluded that the human remains used in the book’s binding no longer belong in the Harvard Library collections, due to the ethically fraught nature of the book’s origins and subsequent history," the university said.

Who did the remains belong to?

Without consent, French physician Dr. Ludovic Bouland bound the book with skin he took from the body of a deceased female patient at the hospital where he worked. The bibliophile was born in 1839 and died in 1933, according to Harvard.

The copy joined the library's collections the year after his death after being placed on deposit by American diplomat and businessman John B. Stetson, Jr. A Harvard alum, the copy was donated to the library by his widow Ruby F. Stetson in 1954, two years after his death.

When did university confirm human remains?

The university confirmed that the book's binding was made out of human remains in 2014, according to Tom Hyry, associate university librarian for Archives and Special Collections.

In a Q&A released by the school , he said Harvard will continue to address human remains in its collections as part of a long term university project.

"We apologize on behalf of Harvard Library for past failures in our stewardship of the book that further objectified and compromised the dignity of the human being at the center," Hyry said. "We are determined to move forward with care, sensitivity, and ethical responsibility and are committed to best practices in the field, including reflection and correcting historical errors."

Why was skin used to bind Harvard book

Published in 1879, "Des destinées de l’âme" was a "meditation on the soul and life after death," Hyry said.

Bouland left a handwritten note in the volume that said "a book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering."
