Can all the teachers in my school use the gradebook.

There are several options to provide online gradebooks for teachers in your school. For schools that want to provide pre-populated gradebooks with students and classes already enrolled, the ThinkWave Administrator school management system is the best option. It combines data from all teachers into progress reports, report cards, transcripts, student summaries, and other reports. There is even a tool to upgrade a solo gradebook to a schoolwide version. If there is no need to combine teacher information, options include site licenses for the premium gradebook. Finally, any teacher can always use the gradebook free of charge.

How do I start a new year in the gradebook?

The online gradebook provides a powerful rollover feature, which copies students, classes, custom field data, and more from year to year. This makes it easy to have a fresh start each year, while information from previous years remains readily available. There is even a feature to copy assignments from previous years, simplifying the setup process. For teachers who will be teaching a new set of students during the upcoming year, there is an option to not copy previous-year’s students.

Can I copy assignments from previous years?

Yes, a copy assignments function makes it easy to copy assignments from a teachers gradebook to a different class, term, or year. In the Setup menu, select Copy Assignments, then select the class and specific assignments you want to import.

Can I have different grading options for different classes?

Yes. You first establish default grading options, then customize them for individual classes and even terms. Grades can be calculated using pure points or flexible grading options, which handle letter grades, pass/fail grades, custom grades, assignment-type weighing, and more. Grades can also be calculated by weighting subterms, so for example, the semester grade can be calculated from the quarter grades and final exam.

Can I drop the lowest assignments?

Yes. In the grading options screen for a class, you can drop the lowest scores for any assignment type, such as homeword, projects, tests, or quizzes. These parameters can be set in default grading options, or different classes or terms.

Can I email all the students in a class?

Yes. The messaging function includes email capability, so that when you post a message to students and parents of a class, it can also be sent by email. You can also email reports such as student summary reports or report cards.

Can students and parents access their grades online?

Yes. Every student (and optionally) parent has a personal online account to access grades, assignments, assignment results, messages, and attendance. Each student can have multiple parent accounts, and each parent can see all their students’ data in one view.

Can I send and receive messages from students and parents?

You can post messages to all the students and parents in a class, and enable a public discussion regarding the message. Each assignment can have a class-wide discussion associated with it, and teachers and students and parents can maintain private discussions regarding assignment results.

Am I limited to points-based grading systems?

No. Flexible grading options let you use points, percentage, letter, pass/fail, complete/incomplete, and custom grade scales for assignments, tests, and quizzes. You can use assignment-type weighting, as well as drop lowest assignments. Of course, Pure Points grading scale is also available.

Are there limitations to the number of students, classes, or assignments?

There are no limitations for students, classes, or assignments. There are even instances when an entire school manages all their data using a free gradebook. Of course, the school management system is preferable for schoolwide use, because it combines data from multiple teachers into a consolidated environment. But even so, the free gradebook does not maintain any artificial limitations.

Yes. Custom fields can be defined for students, teachers, parents and classes. Data can optionally be automatically copied to subsequent school years during the year rollover procedure.

Can I import students?

Yes. There are three options to choose from. Simplest is to add students one at a time. Next is a quick add function, which lets you cut and paste a large list of students and import them all at once. • Keep it brief , and stick to what’s important. Pamela W., a 5th grade gifted teacher, says, “I struggle with this, but BREVITY! I often go back and make sure that I’ve communicated all necessary information...and that is plenty. Too much info can be distracting, and the essential stuff can get lost.” 
• Karlie S., a 4th grade teacher, puts the fun in functional with “organized sections, streamlined information, resources for students and parents to access anywhere. Of course, cute fonts and pretty colors are also a must!”
• Make it work for your unique classroom . First grade teacher Jessica H. uses her class website to post and communicate with parents and provide resources in Spanish and English.
• Use your classroom website to make sure every student can access the resources they need . Technology instructor Natalie P. uses her class website “as a platform for links to approved websites and educational tools students can use for various assignments.”

Plus, some tips we want to add:

• Sharing is caring, but make sure you’re following the rules. Always refer to your school’s privacy policy when sharing photos of students online.
• Keep it up to date! Even the sleekest classroom website is useless if you don’t regularly refresh the information and make sure it has everything students need.
• If you want extra student security , many websites offer tools to make sure your website won’t show up in search results and only students or families with the link can access it.
• Make sure your site is accessible for every student . Don’t make pages crowded with text or information, and make sure light or dark text is on an appropriately contrasting background.

There’s really no limit to what you can add to your classroom website. It all depends on your needs, preferences and imagination! Try:

• Contact information
• A list of classroom rules
• Video resources or handouts
• A class calendar with important dates
• School news and class announcements
• Homework assignments, due dates and rubrics

• Learning resources and commonly used websites
• “About the teacher” bios so students can get to know you

• While Weebly for Education has lots of professionally designed templates, there are no education-specific ones, which can mean a little finessing on your part.
• Weebly for Education is free, and teachers can manage up to 40 student sites at no cost.

The cool kid of DIY website builders, Wix has an intuitive drag and drop editor and lots of beautiful templates, including some education-specific options.

If you’re a private tutor, Wix also includes SEO tools to help you get found on search engines.

• Easy to use.
• Many templates available, including education-specific ones.
• Blogging functions so you can share long-form posts with your students.
• The free version has limited storage and may run ads on your site.
• If you want to upload more than 30 minutes of video, you’ll have to upgrade to a paid plan.

Wix is free to use, but has a variety of plans ranging from $5 to $29 that offer custom domains, the ability to remove Wix ads and more storage space.

3. WordPress

If Wix is the cool kid, WordPress is the tried-and-true option. One of the original blogging platforms, anyone can create a website or a blog with Wordpress’s many themes.

If you’re looking to start a blog for your students alongside a classroom website, WordPress might be the option for you. Plus, students can leave comments on blogs for a productive online discussion.

WordPress is also one of the most commonly used website builders, so it’s worth introducing it to students if you want them to start building digital skills.

• Students can easily use the platform to practice their own website building skills.
• Lots of templates and easy editing make it simple to get started with your own classroom website.
• Free plan has a good amount of storage space, so you should be able to upload videos relatively easily.
• To remove advertising, you’ll have to upgrade to a paid plan.
• Although it’s still easy to use, the editing tools aren’t quite as intuitive as other options.

WordPress is free to use, but you can upgrade to a plan for $5 to $30 a month and get a custom domain name, advanced design tools and access to WordPress’s impressive library of plugins for more functionality.

4. Edublogs

Edublogs bills itself as “the oldest and most trusted web publishing platform for teachers and students.” It includes class management tools so you and your students can blog, plus ways to upload videos and other work.

Since Edublogs is technically a blog and not a website, it’s a great way to communicate one-off announcements and keep students or parents in the loop on a regular basis.

• Edublogs is an ad-free, no-cost website dedicated to supporting teachers and students.
• It’s a great way to share long-form content and thoughts, as well as introduce students to the wonderful world of blogging.
• Edublogs is technically a blogging platform and not a website builder. While it’s easy to share posts and updates, it’s not necessarily meant to have lots of different pages and content types.
• Free for one blog with all the basic features, but you can upgrade for $39 a year for more storage, access to visitor statistics and email subscription tools.

5. Google Classroom

If you’ve used any of Google’s other tools, Google Classroom’s drag-and-drop editor will look familiar to you. It’s simple to use and helps students and teachers stay connected and easily share information or resources.

While it’s not a traditional website, it is custom-built for teaching and has lots of handy sharing features.

• If you already use Google tools for teaching and need to share documents, forms, maps or videos, this is a solid option.
• Out of all the platforms on this list, Google Classroom is probably the easiest to use, especially if you’re familiar with the rest of Google’s offerings.
• There are no custom domain options, but you can send the site to students using Google’s sharing tools.
• Limited styling options mean that there’s not a lot of ways to customize your site, since it’s not technically a website builder.
• Free , although there are pricing options for extra features at the school and district level.

Iowa Department of Education awards over $1.7 million to 20 school districts to help high schoolers earn industry-recognized credentials

DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Education today awarded over $1.7 million in competitive grants to 20 Iowa school districts focused on aligning secondary career and technical education programs with student attainment of industry-recognized credentials. The Credentials to Careers grant awards will support high school students earning credentials with labor market value.

“By expanding opportunities to attain an industry-recognized credential in high school, the Credentials to Careers grant helps connect the classroom to the workforce,” said Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow. “Students earning portable, stackable credentials will be ready to succeed in high-wage and public-good careers, changing lives and strengthening communities. We commend the awardees for their leadership in realizing our shared priority to expand multiple pathways to postsecondary success.”

The following 20 districts were awarded a one-time Credentials to Careers grant:

• Council Bluffs Community School District        
• Fort Madison Community School District        
• Gilbert Community School District            
• Hamburg Community School District            
• Harlan Community School District                
• Indianola Community School District            
• Iowa Valley Community School District        
• Johnston Community School District

• New London Community School District        
• Sergeant Bluff-Luton Community School District    
• Sioux City Community School District        
• South Hamilton Community School District        
• Spencer Community School District            
• Stanton Community School District            
• Treynor Community School District            
• Waukee Community School District            
• Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District    
• Woodbine Community School District        

Industry-recognized credentials are certifications, credentials or licenses vetted by employers and endorsed by a nationally recognized trade association or organization in a particular industry. Credentials are available across many career pathways, including health sciences, information technology, construction, manufacturing, child development, culinary and business.

In determining awards, competitive district applicants demonstrated clear, sustainable plans to align one or more existing CTE pathways with student attainment of industry-recognized credentials . Award amounts were determined by the expenditures outlined in each applicant’s budget proposal, all of which must be directly related to the attainment of an industry-recognized credential through a secondary CTE program. Allowable costs could include student exam fees, instructional equipment, non-consumable instructional supplies, computer equipment and software, wired and wireless internet connections, installation costs, instructor training related to new equipment purchases, instructor training expenses required to offer the credential and curriculum enhancements.

Grants will be distributed this spring for district implementation during the 2024-2025 school year.
