Chances are, as someone building a brand, creating a logo is on your to-do list. The task of designing a logo might seem daunting, but it is a powerful symbol and an essential ingredient to your brand's storytelling. I've put together a combination of guides, tips, and ideas to get you started on creating an effective logo.

What are logos and why should you care?

A logo is a visual symbol representing your brand. It's not your entire brand, but it is an important piece. Your brand is made up of other various elements that create a whole visual and messaging system. However, the logo can often be the first visual interaction someone has with your brand. Just like a first impression, a logo isn't everything, but it is important.

What makes a good logo, well, good?

When you think of logos, some big brands may come to mind: Apple, Nike, Airbnb, etc. However, these brands are known for more than just their logo. Their products, collaborations, and ads are amongst their brand statements that make an impact, but in a sea full of logos, you can likely identify these.

So, what makes them stand out? They're memorable, simple, and timeless. They can vary in complexity, meaning and execution, but they follow these simple principles. Here's how you can do the same.

1. Start with your brand

Consider the elements that make up your brand: your vision, values, and goals. This may feel overwhelming and that's OK. At this stage of the process, you don't need to have every element figured out, but begin jotting down your thoughts. Here are some prompts to get you started:

• What are three adjectives that describe your brand or business?
• What are three adjectives you'd like your audience to use when describing your brand or business?
• How would you describe your vision to a friend?
• What makes you different from your competitors?

2. Get to work

Begin building the groundwork with your answers to the prompts in mind. Remember, you are not committing to anything at this stage. Staying curious, open-minded, and having a willingness to learn will get you far.

Start designing.

Class of 2024 President’s Engagement, Innovation Prize winners announced

Three prize-winning teams will design and undertake post-graduation projects that make a positive, lasting difference in the world..

University of Pennsylvania Interim President J. Larry Jameson today announced the recipients of the 2024 President’s Engagement and Innovation Prizes. Awarded annually, the Prizes empower Penn undergraduate students to design and undertake post-graduation projects that make a positive, lasting difference in the world. Each Prize-winning project will receive $100,000, as well as a $50,000 living stipend per team member. The Prizes are the largest of their kind in higher education. All Prize recipients collaborate with a Penn faculty mentor.

Five fourth-year students were named recipients of the 2024 President’s Engagement Prize. They are Simran Rajpal and Gauthami Moorkanat for Educate to Empower and Anooshey Ikhlas, Brianna Aguilar, and Catherine Hood for Presby Addiction Care Program. Fourth-year students Yash Dhir and Rahul Nambiar have received the President’s Innovation Prize for their project, Jochi .

“The 2024 recipients of the President’s Engagement and Innovation Prize all combine the highest levels of academic excellence with strong service-minded missions,” said Jameson. “Educate to Empower, Presby Addiction Care Program, and Jochi exemplify Penn’s founding ethos: to pursue knowledge for knowledge’s sake and to use it to do good in the world. I congratulate each of our Prize winners and look forward to seeing their ventures thrive.”

The 2024 prize recipients—selected from an applicant pool of 68—will spend the next year implementing the following projects:

• Simran Rajpal and Gauthami Moorkanat for Educate to Empower: Rajpal, a biology and health and societies double major in the   College of Arts and Sciences from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, and Moorkanat, a biochemistry major in the College from Stirling, New Jersey, will work to identify and dismantle barriers to breast cancer screenings in marginalized communities through education and resources at community centers in Philadelphia. They are mentored by Leisha Elmore , an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and chief of breast surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center .    
• Anooshey Ikhlas, Brianna Aguilar, and Catherine Hood for Presby Addiction Care Program: Ikhlas, a neuroscience major in the College of Art and Sciences from Raynham, Massachusetts; Aguilar, a medical sociology major in the College from West Haven, Connecticut; and Hood, a health and societies major in the College from West Greenwich, Rhode Island, will focus on implementing a volunteer program at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center aimed at addressing challenges encountered by individuals with substance use disorders during hospitalization. The Presby Addiction Care Program team is mentored by Jeanmarie Perrone, professor of emergency medicine in Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine and founding director of the Penn Medicine Center for Addiction Medicine and Policy.   
• Yash Dhir and Rahul Nambiar for Jochi: Dhir, a systems science and engineering major in the School of Engineering and Applied Science from London, and Nambiar, an applied science in computer science major in Penn Engineering from Dubai, will grow an online ed-tech management platform that improves the educational experience of students with learning differences, such as ADHD, dyslexia, and executive functioning deficits, and that helps foster greater efficiency and engagement by teachers and administrators in supporting these students. They are mentored by Amanda Antico, capstone director of the Education Entrepreneurship Program in the Graduate School of Education .

This year’s finalists also included fourth-years Sindhuja Uppuluri for Project StreetGuard; Himanshi Verma and Nikita Patel for Refugee Health Empowerment Initiative; Kiln Chen, Caroline Li, and Angela Shen for The Jendela Project; Julianna Cimillo, Turner Halle, Melissa Nong, and Ethan Markwalter for Panbo; and Chiadika Eleh, Liam Pharr, Joey Wei, Isaac Kim, and Venkatesh Shenoy for See-Rynge.

“These prize-winning projects exemplify the enterprising spirit of our Penn students,” said Provost John L. Jackson Jr. “They are all addressing critical challenges in inventive new ways, from ensuring equity and access in health care to improving treatments for substance use disorders to expanding educational resources for those with learning differences. We are indebted to their outstanding faculty advisors and to the staff of the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships , who worked closely with them to develop their ideas into these inspiring initiatives.”

Singapore says it'll let workers ask for their dream schedule. There's just one obstacle.

• Singapore employees can formally request flexible work arrangements starting December 1, the government announced.
• The guideline is part of a global trend toward workforce flexibility.
• While not legally binding, workers can approach unions for support if requests are not considered.

Singapore's government just announced that employees in the country will soon be able to request arrangements like working from home , shorter workweeks , and flexible hours.

Under the new guidelines, which will kick in on December 1, bosses will officially have to consider requests for flexible arrangements that help workers manage their personal and professional lives, according to a government release on Tuesday.

Bosses will not, however, be legally obligated to meet the employee's request.

The announcement highlights a global effort by governments to give employees more flexibility and relax in-office policies. The UK, Ireland, and Australia have implemented similar arrangements.

In Singapore, 73% of young employees said they preferred remote jobs, according to a 2023 survey by research firm Universum. 

While the guidelines are not legally binding, employees can seek assistance from the national trade union or their individual union if they feel their request was not properly considered, the government said. Employers can reject the request if they believe it affects the company's productivity and ability to meet a client's demand.

Women and older workers are more likely to request flexible work arrangements, the government said. Women are more likely to work from home than men: 41% of women, compared with 28% of men, worked remotely in the US, according to the 2022 Bureau of Labor Statistics survey.

"Flexible work arrangements can be beneficial for both employees and employers," said Gan Siow Huang, Singapore's minister of state for manpower, in the press release. "They enable employees to achieve better work-life harmony, and give employers a competitive advantage in talent attraction and retention. "

Singapore's version of the guideline applies to all businesses, regardless of size. It includes all workers once they have completed probation, the trial period at the beginning of the job when the employer can asses if someone is a good fit.

Having a formal process in place for workers to make requests can improve employees' mental health and work-life balance, Theodoric Chew, the CEO of workplace mental health platform Intellect, told Business Insider.

If early adopters, like government agencies, show that flexible work helps employees without sacrificing productivity, companies will follow, Chew said.

Several American leaders, including Bernie Sanders, Point72 CEO Steve Cohen, and IAC and Expedia chairman Barry Diller, have called for, or predicted, four-day workweeks.
