Netball Essay Example

Netball is a ball sport consisting of 7 players in a team. Similar to Basketball, Netball requires teamwork and communication all throughout the game, in order for teams to successfully win the game. Without proper teamwork and communication, it can result in people being left out, lack of participation, people standing around, and the overall loss of the game. To prevent such from happening, I believe that getting to know your teammates before a game is a great way of initiating teamwork. For example: If you were to play a game of netball and someone was given the position of “Goal Shooter” and they aren't as good at  shooting as they are at defending there is a high chance that they may miss the goals or won't be playing their best which can result in them just standing around or being distracted by the things around them. Whereas, if you were to put someone good at shooting on the position of “Goal Shooter” they will be likely to play their best, have full focus on the game, and have a higher shooting accuracy than someone who is not as good at being a “Goal Shooter.” In addition to that, getting to know your teammates can also help make sure that everyone is satisfied with their positions and that no one feels dominated over or left out. In conclusion, knowing who your teammates are and what their strengths and weaknesses are, not only improves gameplay but can also successfully initiate teamwork in a game of Netball.

An introduction to netball

Netball is one of the fastest growing participation sports in the world. Adapted from basketball, it was once known as ‘women's basketball’ and was brought to England from America in the early 1900s. The game was first played outdoors by women on grass, and was essentially the game we now recognise as netball.

An international netball federation was formed in 1960 and the first world netball championships were held in England three years later. The sport is popular in countries such as the UK, Australia and New Zealand, as well as other members of the British Commonwealth.

Today, like basketball, the game is played on a hard court consisting of thirds, with scoring rings at both ends, but with no ‘backboard’ to score off. The balls used are similar to those used in basketball, but are slightly lighter, smaller and softer in construction.

Netball is a non-contact sport and players have to be fast, strong and agile. A game puts considerable pressure on the body, with players having to make short sprints, hard stops, and twists and turns during the course of the match.

Netball positions

The game is usually played by two teams of seven players, the aim being to outscore the opponents. Each player in a team has their position clearly marked by an abbreviation on their bib. Each position in netball is quite specialised and has a specific purpose, and is limited to a certain area of the court. The ball must be touched by a player in each third of the court on its way to the shooters before a point can be scored.

About Netball

Netball is a fast, skilful team game based on running, jumping throwing and catching it is an attacking and a defensive game. Teams may include up to 12 players but only 7 may take the court at any one time.

Each player has a playing position determined by the areas on the court where they may move the 7 playing positions are shown by identification letters worn above the waist, on both the front and the back of the player. (The playing positions are marked on the diagram of the court)  Each team is made up of the following players.

GS . = Goal Shooter

GA . = Goal Attack

WA . = Wing Attack

C .    = Center

WD .= Wing Defence

GD . = Goal Defence

GK . = Goal Keeper

When on court each team member stands next to her/his opposite. i.e. team A goal shooter stands with team B goalkeeper etc.

The major aim of the game is to score as many goals as is possible from within an area called the Goal  D.

History of Netball

It all started in 1891 Springfield Massachusetts James Naismith (Canadian immigrant to the USA) was told to invent an indoor game for young men at the school for Christian workers (YMCA) what he actually invented was basketball. Women’s basketball began 2 days later when 2 female teachers saw the game but it wasn’t really until 1895 that Netball was established it was first played in 1895 in England at Madame Ostenburgs College. There were no standard rules at that time it was played with either 9 or 5 players in each team. The beginning of the 20 th  century the game started to become popular in the British Commonwealth countries. In 1957 Australia toured England and discussions took place about standardizing the rules of the game. In 1960 England Australia New Zealand South Africa and the West Indies met in Sir Lanka to establish the International Federation of Women’s Basketball and Netball. It was then decided to hold world championship tournaments every four years. The first was in Eastbourne England

Australia has dominated the sport by winning the tournament in 1971.75.79.83.91.95 and 99.

In 1988 in Canberra as part of the Australian Bicentenary the first Youth Tournament took place for under 21s. It’s now held every 4 years.

Australia won in 1988, 1996 and 2000 but New Zealand won in 1992.

In 1995 Netball was recognized as an OLYMPIC sport

1998 Netball was played in the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpa and yes Australia won Gold New Zealand Silver and England Bronze

Rules of the Game

Rules can shape the game in many ways.

Netball is a pretty straightforward game, and it can fall into two basic categories: Minor (or “technical”) rules and Major rules.

Minor rule=held ball, stepping, breaking offside and over a third.

Major rule=obstruction, intimidation, contact and discipline.

If a player breaks a minor rule the opposition is awarded a free pass, which is a pass taken from the same spot where the rule was broken.

Breaking a major rule is more serious, and results in the opposing team being awarded a penalty pass.

A penalty pass is similar to a free pass, except the player who broke the rule must stand out of the way until the pass is taken. i.e. beside the player

If a player gives away a penalty pass in the goal circle then the shooter can take a free shot at goal.

A game consists of 4 x 15 minute quarters with an interval of 3 minutes between the first and second and third and fourth quarters and a 5-minute half time interval. There is up to 2 minutes of time allowed for injury

Position and there roles

The goal shooter's main job is simply to score goals! They are allowed in the attacking third and the goal circle BUT nowhere else on the court. The GS must have sharp shooting skills. They have to be able to react quickly, dealing with passes and rebounds. Goal shooters have the steadiest hands on the court and are often among the taller players.

The goal attack is also allowed to try to score goals. They can play in the centre third, the attacking third and the goal circle but NOT the defensive third. The GA's main duty is to feed the goal shooter so they can fire the ball into the net close to the post. But if the defenders are marking the GS then the GA will often have a shot from nearer the edge of the goal circle. The GA must have both strong passing and shooting skills.

The wing attack is the key play-maker of the netball court. It is their job to create as many goal-scoring chances as possible by passing the ball to the shooters. The WA can move in the attacking and centre third BUT not in the goal circle or the defensive third. The wing attack has to have solid passing and collecting skills. They also need good footwork and the ability to open up space on the court.

Centres are able to move in the whole court, with the exception of the goal circles. They have to help out in defence and attack. But they are mainly relied upon to shift the ball away from the defensive area into attack. Centres also restart the game each time a goal has been scored. They do this by making a pass from the centre circle.

The wing defence can go into the centre and defensive thirds, but NOT in the attacking third or the goal circle. Their main job is to stop the ball reaching the opposition's goal circle. They must intercept passes and feed them back to the attacking areas. As well as getting the ball forward they have to mark the opposite wing attack. The wing defence must be focused and good at controlling the ball.

The goal defence patrols the defensive third, the goal circle and the centre third. Their main job is to stop the opposition from scoring and to get the ball out of the danger area! The Goal Defence has to keep a close eye on the other team's goal attack. They must have good skills of anticipation so they can block passes and get the ball out to their own attacking players.

The goalkeeper is the last line of defence. They guard the goal circle and the defensive third and must stop the goal shooter from scoring. They have to stay alert so they can collect rebounds off the post and intercept passes. Goalkeepers are also responsible for taking throw-ins from the goal line. They are often tall and physical players who are prepared to fiercely protect their goal post!

The ball is made of leather, rubber or similar material, weighing 400-450 grams and measuring 70cm (27-28in) in circumference.

The goal posts are 3.05m (10ft) in height. The goal rings have an internal diameter of 38cm (15in). The goal ring projects horizontally from the post on a single attachment measuring 15cm (6 in) in length. There is netting attached to the diameter of the ring hanging approximately 30cm (12in).

The court is 30.5 metres (100ft) long and 15.25metres (50ft) wide, the court is divided into thirds. There is a center circle with a diameter of 0.9 metre (3ft) this is in the middle third of the court and two goal D semi-circles measuring 4.9 metres (16ft) in radius. One at each end of the court on the back line.

All marked lines are part of the court and measure 5cm (2in) in width.

The goal posts are placed mid point on the back line in the semi-circle.

Structure of Netball

Netball is derived from an early form of basketball, which was brought to England from America at the turn of the Century Netball is played mainly by women but an increasing number of men are discovering the game. Netball is played in over fifty countries and on all 5 continents, the IFNA governs world Netball that was founded in 1960. Wales was a founder member the IFNA congress meets every two years and consists of delegates from member countries and representatives from each of the following regions Asia Americas Africas Europe and Oceania Events organised by IFNA include the World Championships which have been held every four years since 1963 and the World Youth Championship for U21 teams which has been held every four years since 1988, The worlds leading netball countries are Australia and New Zealand and between them they have won all the world titles that have been played for so far.

What are the major changes in the rules?

The 1998 changes were brought in with the intention of "speeding up" the game, making it more "spectator-friendly" and less "pedantic" (to quote from IFNA's news bulletin). Most of these changes were pretty self-explanatory, were unlikely to have a major impact on the "ordinary" player's approach to the game, and may well have something of the desired effect; but two of the changes, regarding contact and taking of penalties, made a lot of difference and were been the subject of much anecdotal complaint.

Whilst the concept of taking a penalty "near" the point of the offence (in an attempt to speed up the recommencement of play) might seem reasonable in theory, in practice it was a big pain: how near is "near"? Suggestions as to interpretation included anywhere on a line parallel to the point of the infringement (as currently being done by the Australian national squad - to boos from the crowd when done by the shooter inside the circle, so a first-hand account reports to me) or anywhere behind such a line. It strikes me that the former of these in particular is hardly in keeping with what most people would consider the intention of the change (to speed up and simplify play), and guidelines were subsequently suggested to keep penalties within natural areas of the court.

The changes to the contact rules likewise caused difficulties to many players (and umpires) I spoke to. Quite apart from the fact that many players didn't like the idea that they could no longer block down court (one could  even interpret the changes to invalidate blocking entirely), the possibilities of injury through contact increased by this relaxation of the rules. It was suggested to me that this change was in part to reduce the number of contact calls slowing up the game (and I freely admit that, personally, I don't believe incidental contact should be pulled unless there is disadvantage, to keep the game flowing) but surely, if this is supposed to be a non-contact sport, that's how it should be played? Watch any high level game and the majority of contacts are waived away on the advantage rule. A good umpire uses his/her judgment - another point that was said by some to be an issue, in that this led to inconsistency - but surely there will still have to be judgement as to what constitutes "impeding"? As those of you who know me know, I am a big proponent of mixed netball, and this sort of rule change made many female players I know far more wary of playing mixed because they no longer had the protection against contact by the (usually bigger, faster and thus in their minds more "dangerous") men . Most games tried ended with injury rates of staggering proportions! So Naismith conjured up a game whereby a ball had to be lobbed into a high peach basket (his reasoning being that if a ball had to dropped into the “goal”, it couldn’t be thrown at breakneck speed).

Basketball was born, with the original game featuring nine players – three forwards, three centres and three guards – simply because Naismith had 18 youths to keep amused.

Women’s indoor basketball began exactly two days later when female teachers to the gym were captivated by the game but it wasn’t until 1895 that the current game of netball was well and truly shaped. When Clara Baer, a sports teacher in New Orleans, wrote to Naismith asking for a copy of the rules, the subsequent rules package contained a drawing of the court with lines penciled across it, simply to show the areas various players could best patrol. But Baer misinterpreted the lines and thought players couldn’t leave those areas! In 1899 her mistake was ratified into the rules of women’s basketball as zones.

Three-bounce dribbling had quickly been extended in the men’s game (which didn’t have no-go zones), but it was seldom used in the women’s version when it reached Britain and the Empire. In fact, there was no pressure to increase that form of ball movement and in the end dribbling simply ceased to exist.

During an Australian tour of England in 1957, discussions took place concerning standardising the rules of the sport and this led to representatives from England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and The West Indies meeting in Sri Lanka in 1960, to establish The International Federation of Women’s Basketball and Netball. Formal rules were established at this inaugural meeting and it was decided to hold World Championship tournaments every four years, beginning in Eastbourne, England, in 1963.

Since then World Championships have been held in Australia 1967, Jamaica 1971, New Zealand 1975, Trinidad & Tobago 1979, Singapore 1983, Scotland 1987, Australia 1991, England 1995 and New Zealand 1999. Throughout this period, Australia has dominated, winning the event in 1971, 1975, 1979, 1983, 1991, 1995 and 1999. The 2003 World Netball Championships in Kingston, Jamaica saw New Zealand finally breaking the Australian dominance taking Gold. The 2007 World Netball Championships was due to take place in Fiji but a political coup in the country led to the event being transferred to Auckland, New Zealand. Despite the home advantage, New Zealand were unable to defend their crown and Australia were once more World Champions. Australia retained their title in 2011 in Singapore and in 2015 in Sydney.

As part of the Australian Bicentenary Celebrations in 1988, a Youth Tournament took place in Canberra, for players aged under 21. Its success led to this event being held once every four years. Fiji hosted the 2nd World Youth Netball Championship, Canada the 3rd and the 4th has just taken place in Wales. Australia were winners in 1988, New Zealand in 1992 and Australia again in 1996 and 2000. At the 2005 World Youth Netball Championship, held in Florida New Zealand Won Gold, England Silver and Australia took the Bronze.

Netball was included in the Commonwealth Games programme, for the first time, in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, where Australia took the Gold medal, New Zealand Silver and England the Bronze. It was also a programmed sport in 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester (England), where Australia again took the Gold medal, New Zealand Silver and Jamaica edging out England for the Bronze. In 2006 (Melbourne, Australia) and 2010 (Delhi, India) New Zealand beat Australia and England won the bronze medal. Netball is now a core sport in the Commonwealth Games, with the next editions taking place in The Gold Coast, 2018.

2008 saw the launch of Fast Net World Netball Series, a shorter, sharper version of the game which in 2012 evolved into Fast5, attracting new audiences around the globe.

2012 also saw the sports governing body unveil a new logo and renamed itself as the International Netball Federation (INF). We hope that you will join us on Netball’s journey to the future.

World Netball History

At Congress 2011 Australian netball stalwarts Deidre Hyland AM and Dorothy (Dot) McHugh OAM launched their book, ‘Netball – State of Play’, a history of the first 50 years of the International Federation of Netball Associations to coincide with IFNA’s Golden Jubilee.

Based primarily on documentary evidence, the book traces the early development of the Federation, the evolution of the international game, and the development of the sport of netball beyond the Commonwealth.

One of the most interesting sections of the book contains the reflections of a number of significant people, including Marva Bernard OD from Jamaica, Anne Taylor OBE (New Zealand), and Baroness Sue Campbell CBE (England), on where they see the Federation heading in the next 50 years.

Netball – State of Play has been a labour of love for Deidre and Dot, who claim that their greatest reward is the number of wonderful friends they have made through netball, not only in Australia but around the world.

the many opportunities and memorable experiences we have enjoyed as a result of our involvement with the sport of netball,” Deidre said. INF President Molly Rhone OJ, CD said the book was an invaluable record of the many stages of the game.

“I congratulate Deidre and Dot, both netball icons in their own right, who have devoted much of their lives to the development of the sport and have now placed on record the progress of the Federation since its inception.”

Both Dot and Deidre have had their contribution to sport, and netball, in particular, recognisesd by the Australian Government and by various netball Associations.

They both hold Netball Australia and IFNA Service Awards and both have been inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame.

Women liked the game despite several restrictions including uniforms making skills difficult to execute. So the ladies decided to adapt the game to suit their circumstances. Today the game is the most popular women's sport in Australia with an estimated 1 million players nation wide. Although traditionally identified as a sport for women, there is no reason why it cannot be played with mixed teams, and increasingly more boys and men are becoming involved. At an International level Australia is well respected by over 40 affiliated countries, having won eight of the ten World Championships held since 1963 and are currently number one in World ranking's. Whilst studying the sport of netball and its connection the schools syllabus, my focus was drawn toward Context Area A: Learning Physical skills, therefore this paper will address the relationship Netball has with skill acquisition, the psychology of learning physical skills and the biomechanical bases of learning physical skills.              Skill learning is a process that involves both time and practice. As you move from the stage of a beginner to a highly skilled performer, there are three distinct stages through which you pass: the cognitive stage, the associative stage and the autonomous stage. The Cognitive stage of learning is where the beginner it categorised. Their knowledge is minimal and they rely heavily on encouragement and feedback. In netball a cognitive performer is someone who would have difficulty catching and passing, as well as having problems with interpretations of rules. The coach needs to be understanding of the cognitive performer and be prepared to break down phases of skills into sequenced movements. For example, with passing, explanations as to why you should lead with your front foot and push from your chest need to be outlined so the cognitive performer can interpret and understand the skill they are performing.
