We use water for domestic activities like cooking, bathing, drinking, washing, etc. So, ultimately the consumption of water is very high. This makes it necessary to conserve water. Just as air, water is also important for life. Besides, water consumption, water pollution, and water scarcity are also some of the major water-related issues that need attention so that we can conserve water.

Every year we celebrate World Water Day on 22 March. This day is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of water and run campaigns to conserve water on Earth. There are several ways to conserve water such as switching to showers, turning off taps when not in use, don’t pollute water bodies, storing rainwater, etc.

Water is one of the Earth’s most precious resources. But the world is facing water scarcity. As per the SDA report 2022, around 2 billion people worldwide are lacking safe drinking water. This means they are more vulnerable to diseases and unhealthy life. 

Apart from the increasing population, climatic change is also hampering the quality of water. Floods and Droughts are more frequent due to the vulnerability of climate, thereby increasing the need to conserve water.

By keeping additional slum and industrial pollutants from entering the water, water pollution will save us. All of the proper pollution prevention measures must be followed.

To profit from the rain, rainwater collection must be mandatory. We may also conserve water by turning off the tap while we wash our dishes or brush our teeth. We must also use the water we waste on washing fruits and vegetables to water the plants.

Mission Bhagiratha also created history by providing Telangana with clean, fluoride-free drinking water. Telangana was formerly known for having a high number of fluorosis sufferers as a result of consuming fluoride-contaminated groundwater. By switching from using groundwater for drinking to using surface water, the initiative is also expected to assist in restoring the groundwater level to its former state. The journey of our water from source to tap is long, and not one we think much about. For most of us, our water starts high in the mountains, hundreds of miles away. From there, water flows across natural and working lands until a portion is channelled to water pipes that move water to our faucets, to farms, and to various types of businesses. Most often we think of those pipes as being our main water infrastructure, but upstream lands play a key role in capturing, storing and moving our water. By conserving these lands, we can better protect our water and generate additional benefits for people and nature. Today, approximately 40 percent of the land in urban source watersheds of the world’s largest cities show high to moderate levels of degradation. This degradation impacts the present and future quality and reliability of water flows . However, by investing in nature, we can reduce these impacts.

A new report released by The Nature Conservancy, Beyond the Source: The environmental, economic and community benefits of source water protection , shows that forest protection, reforestation, and the use of cover crops can help four out of five of the 4,000 cities analyzed reduce sediment and nutrient pollution in waterways by a meaningful amount.

For one in six cities analyzed in the report, the cost of implementing source water protection activities could be recouped through savings in annual water treatment costs alone. For half of the cities analyzed, these activities could be implemented for about US$2 per person annually. These nature-based solutions also provide a number of co-benefits, including improving the health and well-being of people, preserving biodiversity, capturing and storing carbon and building more climate-resilient communities. When cities “stack” the value of these co-benefits on top of the savings realized in water treatment costs, they can derive even greater value. Maximizing the benefits of conservation activities will require collective action . Water funds, which enable downstream water users to jointly invest in upstream land conservation and restoration, are a successful mechanism for securing improved water quality and, in some cases, more reliable flows.

For example, in Nairobi, Kenya, high sediment levels in the Tana River from agricultural run-off and development in the mountains catalyzed the development of Africa’s first water fund. Partners in the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund jointly invest in providing upstream farmers with the training, resources and equipment they need to help keep the river healthy, conserve water and reap the benefits of higher crop yields and more stable farms. The fund also has downstream projected benefits including improved water yields and reduced sediment in the river. An analysis of the water fund structure showed that even by conservative estimates, the selected watershed interventions could deliver a two-to-one return on investment on average over a 30-year timeframe. During a recent trip to Kenya, the message from water fund investors and participants was clear: it's in their best interest to make this work. Taking care of the land will ensure the longevity of the agricultural community and create a more sustainable water future throughout the watershed. As cities and populations grow, and climate change adds undue pressure on vulnerable freshwater systems, maintaining healthy lands around our water sources will be increasingly vital to the future of our water security. By investing in nature, we also invest in our future.

Water is necessary for the survival of each living creature on this planet, be it a small worm, plant, or full-grown tree.  Animals and plants  cannot survive without water. About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Unfortunately, only 3% of the water available  is freshwater. About two-thirds of the freshwater lies in the form of frozen glaciers and ice caps. The rest of the small portion is available in the form of groundwater and surface water. 

We totally depend on water for multiple purposes. Water is used in agriculture for the irrigation of crops. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, and other domestic purposes. Water is used for recreational activities. In industries, water is used as a coolant, solvent and also used in other manufacturing purposes. Hydroelectricity is generated with the help of water. Water is also used for navigation and transportation of goods. This tells us how water is the most essential component of life and every drop of water is vital for sustenance. Therefore, water conservation is important to save life on this planet.

As the world's population is growing, so increase in industries and globalisation, causing groundwater to be overused and resulting in water scarcity.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows that many people on this planet don't have access to clean and fresh drinking water. These situations are becoming worse day by day, and we need an immediate plan to control this situation. Various collective measures have to be taken by every individual on this planet and the government of every country to control water scarcity.

Government should impose some strict rules for the conservation of water. The government and the citizens have to take the initiative to create awareness and promote the “conservation of water.” One such initiative taken by the Modi government in India was “JANSHAKTI FOR JALSHAKTI.” This programme began as a means of working toward a brighter future.

Initiatives taken by Some State Governments:

The Punjab government contributed to saving water resources by avoiding waterlogging and fixing the drain  leakage.

The Rajasthan government has taken the initiative to construct small ponds, which  helped the local people of Rajasthan in many ways.

W hile everyone recognizes that water is “essential to all life”, including humans, it is often taken for granted, at least by those who have easy and affordable access to a safe and abundant water supply. As a result, it is frequently misused, polluted or wasted. Giving “value” to water is a way to better recognize its importance—to us as individuals, but also to societies and the environment from which it comes and to which ultimately returns.

But what does “value” mean in this context? What is water “worth”? These are the main questions addressed in the 2021 edition of the United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR 2021). 1

The current status of water resources highlights the need for improved water resources management. Recognizing, measuring and expressing water’s worth, and incorporating it into decision-making, are fundamental to achieving sustainable and equitable water resources management and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

While the term “value” and the process of valuation are well defined, there are several different views and perspectives on what value specifically means to various user groups and stakeholders. So, the question “value to whom?” is also a critical one. There are different methods for calculating value and different metrics to express it. The question of how value can be determined thus becomes fundamental. As described throughout WWDR 2021, the terms “price”, “cost” and “value” are by no means synonymous. Whereas the first two are easily quantifiable from a primarily economic, monetary-based perspective, the notion of value encompasses a much broader set of often intangible benefits. While monetary valuation is arguably easier than most other approaches, and has the advantage of using a common metric by which values of different uses can be quantitatively compared, it can lead to the undervaluation or exclusion of benefits that are more difficult to monetize.

WWDR 2021 groups current methodologies and approaches to the valuation of water into five interrelated perspectives: valuing water sources , in situ water resources and ecosystems; valuing water infrastructure for water storage, use, reuse or supply augmentation; valuing water services , mainly drinking water, sanitation and related human health aspects; valuing water as an input to production and socioeconomic activity , such as food and agriculture, energy and industry, business and employment; and other sociocultural values of water , including recreational, cultural and spiritual attributes.

Differences in the way water is valued not only exist between stakeholder groups but are widespread within them. These divergent perspectives on water value and the best ways to calculate and express it, coupled with limited knowledge of the actual resource, present a challenging landscape for rapid improvements in valuing water. It is, for example, practically impossible to quantitatively compare the value of water for domestic use, the human right to water, customary or religious beliefs, and the value of maintaining flows to preserve biodiversity. None of these should be sacrificed for the sake of achieving consistent valuation methodologies. While the often-intangible nature of some sociocultural values attributed to water regularly defies any attempt at quantification, such values can nevertheless be regarded among the highest ones.

Furthermore, efforts to value water are likely to suffer from some level of bias, even when unintentional, on the part of those directly involved in valuation processes, as the perception of the values attributed to water and its related benefits can be highly subjective. The fundamental question about value is then (as mentioned above) "value to whom?". Valuations often tend to target specific beneficiaries, while other stakeholders may benefit less or even be negatively impacted.

As described in WWDR 2021, good water governance recognizes multiple values and the active participation of a varied set of actors. The use of multi-value approaches to water governance entails acknowledging the role of values in driving key water resources management decisions as well as a call for the active participation of a more diverse set of actors, leading to better integrated and equitable decision-making.

The political will to consider all value sets for water, and to then act on that basis, is critical, necessitating the transformation of political processes and a redistribution of power and voice through the building of public awareness and pressure for change. Addressing conflicting views and overseeing potential trade-offs are among the greatest challenges to water management. Various water use sectors, from water supply, sanitation and hygiene, to agriculture, energy, industry and the environment, stand to benefit over the longer term from an improved integration of the values of water across the full development cycle, from planning through to improved efficiencies, adaptive management and monitoring. But in the near term, there will be trade-offs and a need for adjustments through a set of controls and incentives for certain sectors to use water more efficiently in particular instances. The initial phases of water resources planning and infrastructure design present considerable but underused opportunities for introducing various aspects of water’s value.

Once identified through stakeholder processes of engagement and empowerment, acknowledging the various aspects of water’s value can help ensure their equitable treatment in subsequent stages of water management. Similar opportunities to further address trade-offs exist in later stages of decision-making. In the short term, not all sectors will benefit every time, and some sectors, if not all, will need to adapt in response to the different values of water.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development emphasizes the integrated nature of development and the need to balance economic, social and environmental considerations, as well as the need to mitigate trade-offs and maximize synergies between the SDGs and their policy domains. Recognizing and embracing water’s multiple values is essential to finding mutually supportive solutions across the majority of the Goals.

Water Resource Management: How to Save Water Resources Essay

Water management is an important of pollution control and environmental management policies. The domestic regimes for maritime law and policy arise from a number of disparate sources including relevant international treaties and instruments, the Constitution, the Offshore Constitutional Settlement and our sectoral-based approach to marine management. As a result of our system of government, there are a number of government departments and agencies which have an interest in pollution, dumping and maritime accidents in the marine environment. Since there are no national borders in the atmosphere, pollutants disperse over the entire Earth although taking a long time to create damage. Thus the distantly intimate link today between Japan and Argentina. In this regard, the issue of ozone layer depletion makes us aware of the importance of the planetary interest. It is indispensable for us to have international frameworks in order to sustainably utilize the atmosphere, oceans and natural resources without polluting water, without exhausting resources and without destabilizing the ecological balance of the planet. In this regard, the Montreal Protocol is a valuable legal document since it lays down ways to reduce or abolish the production of specific substances in a concrete manner, allows for the reduction schedule to differ between developed and developing countries and stipulates ways of channeling financial support. Water si renewable resource but it requires time to purify and sanitize it.

In order to address the environmental problem, which is becoming increasingly globalized, we must grasp internationally the reality of the problem, set up measures that take into account technical and economic capacities, provide legal frameworks and follow-up and review measures. To this end, I hope that international environmental organizations such as UNEP will be strengthened further. We are now facing environmental problems which transcend national borders, while we still have an international system based on the sovereign nation-state. We need to address the difficult problems of evaluating and protecting the global commons, which are complicated and interrelated while maintaining the free trade systems of the world. The planetary interest concept will be useful in helping us to realize this goal in the twenty-first century (Arlosoroff, 1995).

A rough assessment of the four major human requirements shows that the current appropriation of natural resources and services already exceeds Earth’s long-term carrying capacity. Agriculture already occupies 4.8 billion hectares (3.3 billion hectares of pasture and 1.5 billion hectares of cropland). Sustainable production of the current round-wood harvest, including firewood, would require a productive forest area of 1.7 billion hectares. To sequester the excess co 2 released by fossil fuel combustion, a further 3.1 billion hectares of carbon-sink land would need to be set aside. This totals 9.6 billion hectares, some 30% above what is available today, and 10% above all potential land. The “sustainability deficit” or “ecological deficit” is a measure of overshoot (van der Straaten, 1994). The “global ecological deficit”, unlike “national ecological deficits”, cannot be subsidized through trade and draw-down from other surplus countries. It depends instead on the liquidation of natural capital stock. It cannot be spatial, imposing the burden on other areas at a single point in time. It can only be temporal, imposing the burden on future generations. The current generation, then, is drawing down on Earth’s natural resource base at an unprecedented rate. If this continues, today’s inhabitants of Earth will leave a degraded planet for future generations—possibly to an irretrievable degree. Without a concerted effort today to reduce material throughput, the generations of the twenty-first century will be left to satisfy their needs from a much-diminished stock of natural capital From this work it is clear that the ecological footprint of the North exceeds its fair “EarthShare” by a factor of two to three. If all humanity maintained the same consumption pattern, three planets would be required to satisfy aggregate demand, on current technology. In the words of the authors (van der Straaten, 1994).

Sustainability turns equally on each of these factors. But the international community has not yet demonstrated an equal commitment to each. The term “sustainable development” tends to prioritize development overconsumption. While the UN conference at Rio addressed development (along with the environment) and Cairo stressed population (along with development), no global conference has to date focused on consumption. The result is a lack of clarity over the global limits to Earth’s carrying capacity and an implicit political premise that there is no limit or that the constraints are considerably elastic. Two decades ago we experienced the Green Revolution—a breakthrough in the rice yield and at the same time a significant increase in the use of water, insecticides and pesticides. Productivity increased by a factor of two. It was just as well for this also allowed us to keep pace with the population growth which doubled in this period and yet people did not starve. A more important conflict has shown up recently (Lee, 1994). On the one hand, there is a lucrative shrimp culture in the bay areas along the coastlines which are resulting in the depletion of the naturally occurring post-larvae of shrimp. On the other hand, this is resulting in brackish water pools along our southern coasts, thus destroying the more environment-friendly paddy fields and resulting in massive land degradation of coastal areas. Consequently, open water, as well as marine fishery management systems, have to be considered in careful detail with a view to increased productivity and sustainability involving the fish population dynamics (Björnlund and McKay 2006).

Artesian water has its own problems. There is arsenic poisoning in the ground around the wells and the sub-soil water is drained off to support irrigation for modern agriculture. People dig deeper but the concentration of arsenic in the water has risen to dangerous levels already resulting in fatal diseases. And in the southwestern part of the country, there is a different problem with the soil. We could further develop the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest in the Ganges delta (Bateman et al 2005). Thanks to UNESCO for its belated inclusion in the list of world heritage. But the Sundarbans already suffer from “top-dying”—the leaves at the top of the trees are dying away due to the increased salinity of the soil resulting from the massive withdrawal of the water at the upper reaches of the Ganges. More recently, however, some flood control projects have upset the natural balance, in many cases resulting in man-made flash flooding and other ecological imbalances. On top of the surface water system management which had its own shortcomings, severe depletion of the groundwater resource in Bangladesh resulted from irrigation water needs for the HYVS. These two apparently distinct yet interrelated areas of surface water and groundwater systems have already seriously impacted the environmental aspects of Bangladesh (Andreoni, 1990).

Expressed differently, the international community can realize hope for the planet’s future only by subjecting excessively selfish interests to the vital planetary interest. This will take care of Earth’s environmental integrity as each nation-state, in turn, takes care of its own environmental integrity. Excessively affluent consumption styles to be found in industrialized countries have been, until recently, basically selfish. But the acceptance by the same countries of some system of a just distribution of wealth in the interests of poorer countries is a step forward towards global environmental conservation (Amin, 1994). Equally, excessive dependence on over-grazing, deforestation and surface water erosion in the developing countries is environmentally extractive and scarcely survivalist. Kenya is a signatory to the UN declarations and action programs that address the environment and development. It has been argued that the North should contribute more towards the costs of rectifying the damage to the planet from air and water pollution. And it has been argued that no sustainable development can take place in a world sharply divided into the affluent North and the deprived South (Allan and Karshenas 1995). Kenya’s national policies have revolved around the alleviation of poverty, the attainment of high educational standards, modest population growth, health for all including clean drinking water by the year 2000 and, now, industrialization. The National Development Plan, 1997-2001, contains four policy objectives central to sustainable development. In the agricultural sector, budgetary increases will ensure increased productivity, additional storage and processing plants and intensification of extension services in an effort to achieve food security. In population, it contains measures to accelerate the decline in the fertility rate. In health, policies for the alleviation of past constraints of underfunding, low staffing and uneven distribution of personnel by 1999. In the shelter, the attainment of adequate housing for all while ensuring sustainable rural settlement and urbanization (Allan 1995).

In sum, water is a renewable resource but it cannot restore in a short period of time. In order, to save water resources and the planet it is crucial to introduce strict policies and protection measures against water pollution.

Russia’s battle with water pollution continues

Every third sample from sources of drinking water in Russia fails to meet acceptable standards due to chemical contamination, according to Russian consumer watchdog agency Rospotrebnadzor. Moreover, nearly half of Russia’s population lacks safe drinking water. As recently reported by Greenpeace, water pollution is widespread: “Thousands of companies have dumped dangerous chemicals into rivers and lakes, and these pollutants are inevitably absorbed into the human body through water and food.” According to Greenpeace, “Companies are not adopting clean technologies, and the government is ineffectual when it comes to preventing criminals from poisoning the water.”

At the same time, in recent years the number of companies in Russia that offer unique technologies for purifying water, including water with radioactive contamination, is increasing. In late August, RosRAO, a subsidiary of Rosatom, qualified to participate in research to determine the technologies that will be the most effective in purifying the polluted water from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant. The Japanese government will invest more than $9.5 million in this research.  

Private companies offer new solutions

More and more, small companies are offering innovative new solutions for water purification.  Recently, a team of former equipment suppliers to Gazprom, Russia’s largest energy company, implemented a new solution developed by the Novosibirsk Institute of Mining. The result is Aquifer, a complex water purification system.  

The Novosibirsk Institute’s new technology is an ejector-dispersant that stirs the water intensively, saturating it with oxygen. The system has no mechanical moving parts, and as a consequence will save a significant amount of energy. Moreover, it will reduce the amount of hypochlorite needed to oxidize iron and other impurities. Aquifer will oxidize all light impurities with air and kill bacteria through electrolysis. Earlier, as a rule, similar technology was used in large-scale water treatment systems. The Aquifer system is unique in that it can be used by smaller companies that consume 20-50 cubic meters of water per day.

Making water safe to drink

The Aquifer idea came to Pyotr Mikheev at the beginning of the 2000s, when he and two of his partners were supplying water treatment equipment to Gazprom camp sites. “We got together $100,000 in personal funds to launch assembly plants,” Mikheev said.

In order to make water potable, there are several classic methods: chlorination, ozonation, UV treatment, ultrafiltration, and electrolysis. Unfortunately, chlorine is dangerous to store, transport, and use because it is a poisonous substance.

Since the end of the 20 th  century, ultraviolet light and ozone have been used in purification. But ozone is poisonous, and ultraviolet light purifies water only near the source. Already within a meter and a half, nothing of this effect is left in the water flow. Therefore, when using this method, a chlorination installation has to be added to the purification cycle. Ultraviolet lamps are longitudinally complex, and the surfaces require constant cleaning. Electrolysis is still the safest and most effective method of disinfecting.  

Technical details

There is another technological subtlety used in the system. The developers combined electrolysis with dispersion (stirring water) and dramatically increased the efficiency with which impurities are oxidized. This is important, because water from underground sources is usually almost free of bacteria but contains a significant amount of iron and other impurities that must be oxidized.

Usually in large water treatment plants, this is done with the help of oxygenation or by a catalyst, oxidizing iron. But these methods have disadvantages: catalyst loading is expensive and requires constant replenishment, while oxygen saturation requires an electric compressor to be constantly running. This makes for high energy costs. But then came the convenient solution invented by the Novosibirsk Institute of Mining.

The Aquifer is installed in modules, or “cubes,” depending on the composition of the water and the purification requirements. If, for example, desalination is necessary, it is added at the corresponding stage. If the water is underground, the decontamination unit is removed, or the deferrization module if the water is on the surface. The technology can be used not only for potable water supply systems, but for treating domestic and industrial wastewater and swimming pools.

Two Aquifer units are already in operation in Surgut and Yakutsk, plus another in Elektrostal near Moscow for purifying water used in industrial processes. Many industries have the same problem in Russia: the water contains too many impurities to be used in industrial processes.
