7 Tips to Make Your School Presentation Stand Out

Who says that school has to look boring? Making information visually appealing is extremely impactful and exactly what a designer does! Plus, making a factually accurate presentation that is fun and beautiful will score you extra points with your teacher. In today’s Canva tutorial , we will talk about how to make your school presentation stand out. These tips can be implemented and modified to make a presentation for your own topic for class. Not only will you have wonderful pieces you can use for school but you can have a bit more fun doing homework!

In a crowd of presentations, how do you make yours stand out? There are many boring pre-made templates that don’t use enough pictures out there, and if you’re in a time crunch there’s no problem using these. This tutorial wants to challenge you to create a stunning presentation from scratch rather than copying and pasting into a carbon-copied template. Here you will learn a few tricks to turning your boring school presentation to an eye-catching work of art.

1. Have a stunning opener

First impressions are important and that counts for school presentations too! Make that first opening slide memorable but remember to keep it relevant to your topic. Remember, keep the aesthetic for the rest of your presentation, because the opening slide sets the tone for the rest of the presentation.

Make sure not to overcrowd your opening slide with pictures, graphics, or words. In this case, less is more. You can even make one image frame your text for an effortless but professional look. Just make sure to have all the important information on there.

2. Limit the colors in your presentation

Use no more than five colors for your whole presentation. Remember simplicity is key. It is hard to know which words or information is important if every word is a different color! Use color sparingly, consistently and to highlight important information. Use your colors as accents, not the main stars of your presentation.

3. Have consistent slides

Build a template you can follow throughout your presentation. Or chose any of Canva's existing templates from the toolbar on the left. Then adapt the colors to make it uniquely your own by clicking on each object in the template, clicking on the color box near the top left of your slide window, and changing the color.

Add visual interest by using a second font. Pair different fonts and styles for body copy and titles in your slides and stick with it with all of your slides. In terms of fonts, also try to stick to a sans-serif font, as it will be easier for audience members to read. Pick a similar background and use the same colors throughout your presentation and make them indicate similar things throughout your presentation to create a design language with your audience and solidify information rapidly.

4. Add stunning photos

Have you noticed the most boring presentations lack any visual elements and pictures? Although some may think it distracting from the information at hand, visuals can help solidify information in your presentation. A lot of people learn in different ways, so by keeping it entertaining and visually appealing for those visual learners, you can broaden the interest of your audience. In fact, visuals are processed 60,000 times faster in the brain than text!

To add photos or graphics in Canva, use the toolbar on the left to click on Elements. Then search for the item you're hoping to add. Next click on Photos, Graphics or Videos to see relevant results for each type of content. Once you find the image you like, just click on it and drag it onto your slide. You can also upload your own images by clicking Upload in the left-hand toolbar.

5. Write short, direct bullet points

Presentations are all about information so we want the message to be clear. Remember, less means more! Like in the title page, only put the most important information on your slides and make them short and easy to understand sentences. Visuals can help where words can fail.

6. Add some finishing flourish

You can add simple animations and transitions between slides to really make your presentation come to life! To add animations simply click on the objects on your slide you want to animate, and then click Animate above your working window. You'll have to option to chose how those objects move onto the slide, such as from the left side, from the bottom, and so on. You can also use animation to make items get larger or smaller (select under Scale), and really pop out by tumbling (select under Exaggerate), and more.

7. Don’t forget to research!

Now that you have a visually stunning presentation, hit it out of the ball park by having accurate facts fill in those short bullet points. What your teacher will care about is facts, making it look pretty is the icing on the cake. Research your topic online, reference your textbook, and ask your teacher for more information if needed!

Doing a presentation in class can be intimidating, but it does not have to be. This wikiHow will give you lots of pointers on how to do a presentation in class with minimal stress.

Planning the Presentation

• Write down keywords or main ideas. If you need to consult your index cards, you're only going to want to scan the index card for information, not read every last word.
• Most of the time, the act of putting information down on your index cards will help you remember the information. So, while you might not strictly need the note cards, it's a nice security blanket to have if you happen to forget what you were going to say.
• You don't want to be reading straight off your notecards during your presentation.

• Practice in front of your family or friends, or in front of the mirror, when you rehearse your presentation. It's probably better to do it in front of friends who you may not know well, as this will help you replicate the feeling of being in front of the class.
• Ask your friends for feedback after you finish your presentation. Was the presentation long enough? How was your eye contact? Did you stammer at all? Were all the points clearly made?
• Make a critique of your practice performance. Challenge yourself to work on all the things that you believe you can improve during the real presentation. When it comes time to deliver the real deal, you'll feel confident knowing that you've worked extra hard on what was toughest for you.

• Get quotes from reliable sources. Good quotes make a good presentation great. Taking what smart people have said and putting it into your presentation not only makes you look smart, it shows the teacher that you spent time thinking about what other people said.
• Make sure your sources are trustworthy. There's nothing that can quite break your confidence like a fact that turns out to not be a fact. Don't always trust the information you get off the Internet.

Delivering the Presentation

• Studies have shown that smiles are infectious; that means that once you smile, it's hard for everyone else not to smile. So if you want your presentation to go off without a hitch, force yourself to smile. That'll make everyone smile; and maybe those smiles will make you actually smile.

• Think about your intention before you talk to your audience. Do you want to educate, enlighten, or entertain this audience? What is the effect that you want to have on the listener?
• Visualize success before, during, and after your presentation. Be humble about what you do — no need for cockiness — but imagine a successful presentation at all times. Don't let the thought of failure creep into your mind.
• In many ways, your confidence is just as important as the information you're delivering. You don't want to spread misinformation, or skimp on doing your research, but a lot of what you'll be graded on — and what the other students come away with — is going to be your level of confidence. Also if you are confident, you will have a better time exchanging ideas with the class.
• If you need a confidence boost, think big picture. After 10 or 15 minutes, your presentation will be over. What will your presentation matter in the long run? Probably not very much. Try to do the best you can, but if you're getting nervous, remind yourself that there are much more important moments in your life to come.

• Have the goal of looking at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like you've engaged with them. Plus, you'll look like you know what you're talking about.

• Inflection is the kind of movement that radio DJs put into their voice; it's the ramped-up pitch in your voice when it gets excited. You don't want to sound like you've just seen a lion, but you also don't want to sound like you've just seen a squirrel, either. Vary it up to make the presentation more interesting.

• Tell a story, maybe one with a personal note. Stories are great for history or English presentations. Maybe you can tie your presentation into a little anecdote about a famous historical person?
• Ask a provocative question. Ending with a question is a good way of getting your audience to think about your presentation in an interesting way. Is there a certain conclusion you want them to come to?

Slideshows are an intuitive way to share complex ideas with an audience, although they're dull and frustrating when poorly executed. Here are some tips to make your Microsoft PowerPoint presentations sing while avoiding common pitfalls.

It all starts with identifying what we're trying to achieve with the presentation. Is it informative, a showcase of data in an easy-to-understand medium? Or is it more of a pitch, something meant to persuade and convince an audience and lead them to a particular outcome?

It's here where the majority of these presentations go wrong with the inability to identify the talking points that best support our goal. Always start with a goal in mind: to entertain, to inform, or to share data in a way that's easy to understand. Use facts, figures, and images to support your conclusion while keeping structure in mind (Where are we now and where are we going?).

I've found that it's helpful to start with the ending. Once I know how to end a presentation, I know how best to get to that point. I start by identifying the takeaway---that one nugget that I want to implant before thanking everyone for their time---and I work in reverse to figure out how best to get there.

Your mileage, of course, may vary. But it's always going to be a good idea to put in the time in the beginning stages so that you aren't reworking large portions of the presentation later. And that starts with a defined goal.

A slideshow isn't supposed to include everything. It's an introduction to a topic, one that we can elaborate on with speech. Anything unnecessary is a distraction. It makes the presentation less visually appealing and less interesting, and it makes you look bad as a presenter.

This goes for text as well as images. There's nothing worse, in fact, than a series of slides where the presenter just reads them as they appear. Your audience is capable of reading, and chances are they'll be done with the slide, and browsing Reddit, long before you finish. Avoid putting the literal text on the screen, and your audience will thank you.

Right off the bat, we're just going to come out and say that Papyrus and Comic Sans should be banned from all PowerPoint presentations, permanently. Beyond that, it's worth considering the typeface you're using and what it's saying about you, the presenter, and the presentation itself.

Consider choosing readability over aesthetics, and avoid fancy fonts that could prove to be more of a distraction than anything else. A good presentation needs two fonts: a serif and sans-serif. Use one for the headlines and one for body text, lists, and the like. Keep it simple. Veranda, Helvetica, Arial, and even Times New Roman are safe choices. Stick with the classics and it's hard to botch this one too badly.

There reaches a point where bullet points become less of a visual aid and more of a visual examination.

Bullet points should support the speaker, not overwhelm his audience. The best slides have little or no text at all, in fact. As a presenter, it's our job to talk through complex issues, but that doesn't mean that we need to highlight every talking point.

Instead, think about how you can break up large lists into three or four bullet points. Carefully consider whether you need to use more bullet points, or if you can combine multiple topics into a single point instead. And if you can't, remember that there's no one limiting the number of slides you can have in a presentation. It's always possible to break a list of 12 points down into three pages of four points each.

Animation, when used correctly, is a good idea. It breaks up slow-moving parts of a presentation and adds action to elements that require it. But it should be used judiciously.

Adding a transition that wipes left to right between every slide or that animates each bullet point in a list, for example, starts to grow taxing on those forced to endure the presentation. Viewers get bored quickly, and animations that are meant to highlight specific elements quickly become taxing.

That's not to say that you can't use animations and transitions, just that you need to pick your spots. Aim for no more than a handful of these transitions for each presentation. And use them in spots where they'll add to the demonstration, not detract from it.

Sometimes images tell a better story than text can. And as a presenter, your goal is to describe points in detail without making users do a lot of reading. In these cases, a well-designed visual, like a chart, might better convey the information you're trying to share.

The right image adds visual appeal and serves to break up longer, text-heavy sections of the presentation---but only if you're using the right images. A single high-quality image can make all the difference between a success and a dud when you're driving a specific point home.

When considering text, don't think solely in terms of bullet points and paragraphs. Tables, for example, are often unnecessary. Ask yourself whether you could present the same data in a bar or line chart instead.

Color is interesting. It evokes certain feelings and adds visual appeal to your presentation as a whole. Studies show that color also improves interest, comprehension, and retention. It should be a careful consideration, not an afterthought.

You don't have to be a graphic designer to use color well in a presentation. What I do is look for palettes I like, and then find ways to use them in the presentation. There are a number of tools for this, like Adobe Color , Coolors , and ColorHunt , just to name a few. After finding a palette you enjoy, consider how it works with the presentation you're about to give. Pastels, for example, evoke feelings of freedom and light, so they probably aren't the best choice when you're presenting quarterly earnings that missed the mark.

It's also worth mentioning that you don't need to use every color in the palette. Often, you can get by with just two or three, though you should really think through how they all work together and how readable they'll be when layered. A simple rule of thumb here is that contrast is your friend. Dark colors work well on light backgrounds, and light colors work best on dark backgrounds.

Spend some time in the Slide Sorter before you finish your presentation. By clicking the four squares at the bottom left of the presentation, you can take a look at multiple slides at once and consider how each works together. Alternatively, you can click "View" on the ribbon and select "Slide Sorter."

Are you presenting too much text at once? Move an image in. Could a series of slides benefit from a chart or summary before you move on to another point?

It's here that we have the opportunity to view the presentation from beyond the single-slide viewpoint and think in terms of how each slide fits, or if it fits at all. From this view, you can rearrange slides, add additional ones, or delete them entirely if you find that they don't advance the presentation.

The difference between a good presentation and a bad one is really all about preparation and execution. Those that respect the process and plan carefully---not only the presentation as a whole, but each slide within it---are the ones who will succeed.

This brings me to my last (half) point: When in doubt, just buy a template and use it. You can find these all over the web, though Creative Market and GraphicRiver are probably the two most popular marketplaces for this kind of thing. Not all of us are blessed with the skills needed to design and deliver an effective presentation. And while a pre-made PowerPoint template isn't going to make you a better presenter, it will ease the anxiety of creating a visually appealing slide deck.

How To Design PowerPoint Slides For Academic Presentations

The much-maligned PowerPoint is not dead. In fact, it is not even near to its end, no matter how smothered it may seem due to its far more prevailing and awarding history.  

Whether delivered through PowerPoint, Keynote, PC, Mac, or any other platform, bad slides are always tormented for being sleep inducers (termed as DEATH BY POWERPOINT) that make the audience cringe and regret their second serving at the buffet. 

We all have suffered through those long-winded speeches, horrible slideshows with nothing to reflect upon, hot mess PowerPoint presentations, and whatnot that totally undermine the point of ‘visual’ representations. Due to the long list of unreadable and jarred text, pixelated clip art, and the constant habit of the presenter turning a blind eye to the fact that his presentation is a torturous experience, slides have always been reprimanded as “Bad”. They have always received a bad rep in the history of visual art due to ‘information overload’. 

But, the fact that no matter how embroiled slides are, they are always a prerequisite and an essential part of our work.  Whether it is a major business conference, a small group meeting, or a thesis defense topic, having good quality presentation slides is a must. If done well, they serve as visual reinforcements that speak the language you like. If not, well you know it better! 

Although the basic principles are still applicable like “limit your text servings”,  “keep it simple” and others that can be navigated across all the Internet pages, we have a few extra tips that can make your complicated slide designing process, less tormenting and more rewarding!  

But, first, let us start with the basics! 

What you see up front is not what your audience will see

Consider this as a thumb-rule! Although rules are meant to be broken, not this one! 

Why? Hear us and then decide! 

If you are using a modern laptop with a pretty good display quality in terms of resolution and contrast, there is nothing to worry about. But what if you are catering to three or more people? Then obviously, a good laptop with a decent color display simply won’t cut it. While projecting on a large screen, the images, fonts and other elements are to be chosen wisely and competently, because they may not seem as clear as they are on a small laptop screen. 

Consequently, the room layout is also an important factor to consider. In dedicated lecture theatres, people might have an unobstructed view of the screen, but that is not the case with small enclosed auditoriums, jam-packed with an audience far more than required, meaning most of the people will have a partial view. 

These less-than-ideal conditions should always be borne in mind and reflected upon if you want your presentation slides to work their magic. Therefore, it was important to get them out of our way first. 

That being said, let us break down all the potential tips for designing and delivering good presentation slides! 

1. Say No to “Junk” 

PowerPoint software was designed to support the visual message and the speaker. Slides were never meant to be the star of the show in the first place, they were meant to be supporting actors that shielded and made the true star (You: the speaker) look good. This is why slides brimming with unnecessary stuff like charts, fancy backgrounds, and others derail and defeat the entire purpose of presenting. They hinder the process of communicating the actual message to the audience, or as Edward Tulle calls it turns it into a ‘Chart Junk’.Therefore, nothing in your slide should be superfluous, rather it should contain enough “white space” or negative space as filling it with unnecessary graphics will not contribute to it becoming a piece of art. The less the clutter, the more powerful the visual message!

2. Typography- Serif or Sans-Serif?

Non-designers often stress the importance of choosing the right typeface for their presentations and for a good reason. The wrong font can be a serious turnoff and more so when it is not legible to all your audience. Typefaces can communicate a mood, set the tone right, and reflect a point in time, so choosing the right typeface is necessary. For academic presentations, serifs fonts can look crappy and lousy because of their finer details. Also, when viewed from a distance on a large screen, they may seem to be blurry and inconsistent. Therefore choose the old style sans-serifs fonts that are simple, less finely milled, and sharply edged to help create a balance. Fonts like Arial and Helvetica are safer choices to play with. They feel more formal and professional, ensuring that your slide design remains inside the realm of the neat and polished layout. 

3. Use high-quality graphics and imagery

Low-quality images are “visual cliches” and make your presentation look flat out cliche and unprofessional. They show a lack of creative intellect and adherence to the most basic presentation design rule to “use high-quality imagery.” While presenting on a larger screen, the biggest issue is image pixelation, which is why a presenter needs to make certain that all the images used are of high resolution. These high- quality images can also be thematic to reinforce your Big 

Idea competently.

4. Leave the Fireworks to Walt Disney

It is great to know how to add visual elements to a design by transforming the text into shapes, making images spin- but, leave the fireworks to Disney. Let them do what they are best at and focus on conveying the true meaning of your presentation. Your job is to make your speech the star of the show. Simple transitions, bare minimum animations, clean and polished fonts, attractive graphics trump creative PowerPoint tricks every time. So, stick with plain and simple rather than over-the-top and fancy! 

5. Use the top half 

Unless an event management presentation is to be designed, specifically showing the venue where an unobstructed view for the audience is guaranteed, try using just the top half of the slide.

This restricts the amount of space available for you to play with, making the slide look neat, polished, and professionally sound. 

6. Ditch the “Me” paradigm 

Recklessly scanning a graphical image or a table from the existing print file material and including it in the presentations is the biggest presentation sin referred to as the “Me” paradigm. A majority of presenters commit this crime, resulting in a sub-optimal presentation slide. Print visuals are actually meant to be viewed from a distance of 8-12 inches, not more than that. If the distance is exceeded it can result in image pixelation. Typically these images are text-laden and too detailed, so the most you refrain from using such images, the better your slides will be. The same is true for font size; 12 points or lesser font simply won’t do. For an optimally designed slideshow to be presented in a conference room, a minimum of 40 point font fulfills the legibility criteria. 

Note- Remember,  move the circle from “me” to “we” to help create an impact, strong enough to induce call-to-action! 

7. Practice, Practice and Practice 

More important than the slides, is planning the delivery beforehand. Practice your talk (speak loudly and fluently, carefully scanning every important point you want your audience to ponder upon) and make sure:

• They fit the time criteria
• Are neatly aligned 
• The opening and closing statements are well-scripted 

8. Last but no the least: When in doubt, dump it

If you are AI Gore explaining CO2 emissions or Jeff Besos for that matter, slides are essential- but not always!  If not, pre-designed slides that have all the elements neatly and professionally presented that can act as a valuable asset. 

One last thing and probably the most important of all is; if you are a solo flyer, with no A/V assistance, then pack a remote with spare batteries to suffice your flight filled with turbulencies. Nothing is worse than looking at a miserably confused presenter, hunting for the right key to peck away the advanced slides!

G oogle Slides is Google's version of Microsoft Office. It gives you tools to create effective presentations and collaborate with others in minutes. Google Slides works across a variety of devices, including contemporary Android tablets , and it's free. Sometimes, the creative process can go awry, and a redundant text box could ruin your thought process. This guide explains how to remove a text box in Google Slides.

Delete a Google Slides text box

Deleting a text box in Google Slides is straightforward. However, the process differs slightly depending on the device you use. Below are the steps for deleting a text box on the web and the Android app.

On your web browser, go to Google.com and follow the steps below.

• Click Go to Slides .
• Go to the upper-left corner and choose Blank presentation .
• Choose a slide with a text box in it.
• Right-click the text box you want to delete.

However, he also noted that School of Rock 2 couldn't happen without original writer Mike White , who also played Dewey's brother in School of Rock , Ned Schneebly. Since White is pretty tied up working on the TV series White Lotus , it may be difficult to make School of Rock 2 happen.

White isn't the only person who would need to return to make School of Rock 2 worth it. A sequel of this nature would depend heavily on nostalgia, which requires a significant chunk of the original School of Rock cast to return. The most likely actors to return would be Cosgrove and Joan Cusack, but this may not be enough to make School of Rock 2 worth it. Perhaps one day, everything will line up just right to make the sequel happen, but only time will tell.
