Advantage :, – staff advantages.

A lack of walls or other physical barriers in offices makes it easier for employees to interact with each other on a regular basis . The constant intermingling not only generates a sense of camaraderie among personnel, it also enhances the flow of information and teamwork . Colleagues can turn to each other for advice or assistance without having to knock on doors or schedule a formal meeting. Interactions in an open-plan office space generally are more frequent and informal than in closed environments where everyone has a separate office space.

– Business Advantages

The increased collaboration resulting from an open-plan work space can lead to business innovation and advancement . At the same time, an open-plan layout can benefit the business economically by reducing costs tied to construction, utilities and office equipment . For example, fewer walls mean less time and materials required to create the office space. Having a single work space also may reduce heating/cooling and electricity expenses thanks to improved flow of air and light. Businesses can save on equipment investment as well, since communal spaces promote shared use of resources , such as printers, copiers and staplers. An open-plan space also provides greater flexibility to accommodate evolving personnel needs.

Disadvantage

– staff disadvantages.

On the downside, the high level of everyday interaction that takes place in an undivided work space may lead to noise and distractions that make it difficult for employees to focus on their work and conduct business. Lack of privacy is another potential problem with open-plan office spaces, where computer screens are easily visible by those walking by and telephone conversations are likely to be overheard. Open-plan layouts also facilitate the spread of disease, so if a colleague comes to work with a cold, it can affect the health of the entire staff.

– Business Disadvantages

Most of the factors that are disadvantages for personnel are also detrimental to the business as a whole . For example, the distractions caused by frequent interactions among staff members and high levels of noise can result in decreased productivity . Business output also may be reduced by the higher rate of absenteeism associated with open-plan environments in which disease spreads more easily. In addition, the lack of privacy inherent in open-plan designs may give rise to legal or ethical issues stemming from compromised confidentiality in regard to clients or colleagues.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift towards open plan designs in various types of buildings, including offices and schools. This trend can be attributed to several factors, and whether it is a positive or negative development depends on the perspective from which it is viewed.

One of the primary reasons for the popularity of open plan designs is the emphasis on collaboration and communication in modern work and educational environments. By removing physical barriers such as walls and cubicles, these spaces are believed to facilitate interaction and teamwork among individuals. Open Plan Office Design, Its Benefits & Drawbacks Essay

Reasons to choose open plan working, reasons not to choose open plan working.

There are many reasons why employers may choose to create open-plan offices for their workers. First, open plan office design is advantageous for employees due to the absence of walls, so people are able to interact better with each other, share ideas, and act upon them. For example, according to the article by Waber, Magnolfi, and Lindsay (2014) from the October Issue of Harvard Business Review , Facebook was planning to put several thousand of its staff into one large room, which was a mile long. Frequent interactions among employees not only create a sense of friendship and teamwork but also improve the process of information sharing. Furthermore, interactions that occur in an open plan office environment are usually more frequent, friendly, and informal compared to closed spaces where employees have separate rooms to themselves.

The second reason for creating open-plan offices is the correlation between enhanced teamwork and business advancements. Since employees are prone to communicate in an open plan environment, it is far more likely that new ideas concerning improvement and innovation will come quicker. Third, open plan office spaces require fewer materials, and, subsequently, less time. Even the reduction of heating or cooling costs can improve the company’s budget and let employees focus on more important things. Overall, the concept of open-plan offices can be correlated with activity-based working, which is a process tailored to collaborative working through meetings and constant brainstorming (Ditchburn, 2014).

Despite the advantages, open plan office environments may create some concerns, particularly for employers. For example, such a restructuring of a workplace environment has been called “glorified hot desking” rather than a genuine response to the needs of the staff (Koziol, 2014). Another reason for employers to stay away from open-plan offices is the fact that frequent interactions among employees may potentially lead to the creation of noise and distractions that prevent workers from completing their assignments (Tickle & Gorrilla, 2016). As mentioned by Tickle (2016), everything is possible in an open space environment: one employee doing exercises while another is working away at the desk. To some, such a space organisation may seem chaotic and counterproductive, especially when there is a set deadline for task completion. Moreover, the lack of privacy in the workplace may be of concern for employees because someone may see a private email on their computer or overhear a telephone conversation.

The third reason for not opting for open-plan offices is associated with the overall productivity of the business. With distractions comes the decrease in productivity and efficiency that may cost a business a lot. Furthermore, an open-plan office setting is an obvious environment for disease spreading; for example, it is much easier for employees to catch a cold in such a setting where another worker got a cold first. Lastly, the lack of privacy can cause some ethical and legal problems arising from the compromised confidentiality regarding colleagues and clients.

Instructions

Listen once to the recording and write down your answers at the same time. In the real test, you will only be able to listen once. So, use this practice lesson to try focusing and getting the answers in the first listening.

Choose no more than one word from the recording to complete each sentence below. Listen only once and write down your answers.

Office etiquette is all about common courtesy to other people in the work place. It is becoming more common for offices to have a modern open-plan design with members of staff all working in one large room without dividers. This type of office design unfortunately does result in a lack of privacy which means staff need to be more mindful and considerate than ever before of each other.

• This answer means that you can have the word “open-plan” as your answer or the word “modern” as your answer. You can’t have both words. Also you can’t have the answer “open”
• You can’t write “open plan” as your answer as that is too words. There should be a hyphen between the words.
• In the transcript you will see that the information about “ability to focus on work” is paraphrased as “distracting to others who need to concentrate on their work”. This is about noise levels.
• The topic of mess is before this and is not about focusing on work. But it is easy to get confused due to the words “too much…”.
• If you got this question wrong, read through the transcript and see how you made the mistake by focusing too much on words and less on meaning.
• You can’t have the answer “respectful” because that word is not given in the recording. Your answer must come from the recording – you can’t use synonyms as answers.
• You can’t have the word “friendly” as the answer. “Being friendly of other people’s beliefs” has not meaning in English and is grammatically incorrect. Your answer must make sense and be grammatically correct.
• You can’t have the word “ill” or “unwell” because that word was not used in the recording.
• The word “illness” was in the recording but it grammatically incorrect to use in this sentence and is an incorrect answer.

Open plan office has no walls no barriers. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

The design of the open plan office – a joint work station with no physical obstacles - is popularly implemented these days. Despite a range of its advantages, I strongly believe that they cannot compensate for its drawbacks. On the one hand, open space offices are selection by employers as it is a medium for boosting workers’ interaction. To begin with, direct communication among personnel members is likely to be far easier in the setting with no visual hindrances. Daily work information could be promptly exchanged during office time, facilitating the flow of work effectiveness. Colleagues can now converse with and consult others without having to knock on doors or planning formal meetings as they used to. As a results, business discussions are more frequent and casual than those in a confined space. Besides, partnership could be lifted thanks to intermingling. The more continually co-workers interact with one another, the more camaraderie would be reinforced, which tightens collaboration. Everyone in the office may have a heightened awareness of mutual support for the sake of their company. For these two advantages, it might be sensible to install the open plan offices. That said, the undivided work space has more downsides than anticipated. For a start, since employees converse with a high frequency, various distractions are inevitable. Such interruptions may vary from clicking sounds on computers to dialog noises, badly affecting workers’ powers of concentration and business efficiency. Bombarded with everyday interference, the workers would probably devise many ways of maintaining focus: wearing over-ear headphones, placing a ‘busy’ sign on desktops, or leaving for a more secluded site. These coping methods may over time make the employees increasingly wary about their peers’ approach for fear that their attention could be upset. The next issue rather transparent is invasion of privacy. Whether workers like it or not, they have to bear many forms of intrusion due to the non-barrier station. Computer screen are plainly visible and phone calls are likely to be overheard. In the worst case, the employees may get harassment or other misconduct actions in the workplace, which would create not only tension but also anxiety and distress. Thus, the design of the workstation without any tangible walls might be a good option, yet it has underlying minus points. In conclusion, the open plan office seems active in the working environment, it needs to be taken into account because of the dominant negative elements.

I thought having my own office meant I'd 'arrived,' but it was depressing. Here's why open-plan office layouts are best.

• The open plan concept is her winner due to the natural light and varying spaces for work. 

This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Jennifer Moore, 43, from Salt Lake City, about her experience working in different office spaces. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I was a summer intern with a small desk in a hallway when my career began in 2003.

There was another intern who had her own cubicle with high walls that kind of looked like a mini office. I really loved my makeshift workspace, but I'll be honest — I was jealous. It was like I was an afterthought.

I've spent 10 years in financial services , where I worked in everything from high-walled cubicles to open office floor plans to eventually having my very own office. I also spent 10 years in B2B tech and software-as-a-service companies , where there's nothing but open office plans.

Cubicles are good for deep work and privacy, but they can be isolating

I've found that the true cube farm — with four high walls and a doorway — can be really helpful for deep work and conducting short one-on-ones.

I think privacy is another pro. In 2006, when I was working at Wells Fargo , I received an email telling me someone I was very close to in high school had died. I remember having a very loud reaction. My co-workers heard me but didn't necessarily see me burst into tears. It was a blessing to have a bit more privacy at that moment.

The cons of cubicles is that they were somewhat isolating. There was no sunlight. The executives and leaders all got these fantastic offices that had windows, so you could tell immediately who the head honchos were.

Having my own office was depressing and soul-crushing

Having your own office is associated with prestige and privacy, but my first experience of this was horrible.

In 2015, I thought I had arrived. I had officially made it into product management at a financial services company and was given my very own office with a door. I had a furniture budget and everything, but I was absolutely miserable.

There was no natural light, only dim fluorescent lights, so I'd try to get out in the sunlight every day. There wasn't any foot traffic passing by my area because it was in a weird corner. It was isolating — I could go an entire day and not see or talk to a soul if I wanted to.

It was really depressing and soul-crushing.

One thing I would say is, at the time, I was doing some physical therapy, and it was really nice to be able to shut the door and close the shade on my tiny window so I could do stretches in complete privacy.

I learned that the overall workplace environment is more important to me than whether I had achieved having my own office.

You can say you believe in teamwork and collaboration but if you haven't designed an office space that encourages this, people are going to struggle to embrace it daily.

After I left my previous company in December 2023, I decided to focus full-time on my own consulting business.

I work in a coworking space for a company I consult for. It has an open floor plan with several conference rooms, telephone booths, and seating areas.

I think open office plans are the clear winner in a modern workplace, but their weaknesses should be augmented by using aspects of cubicle design that allow for areas of privacy and for different types of work.

Managers still need privacy. In a place where I worked recently, an executive would regularly conduct all their one-on-ones in the open seating area, and several people commented how awkward it was to hear highly personal information being discussed on a daily basis.

In open-floor plans, you can find spaces for deep work, collaboration, and large and small meetings. They can have soundproof booths in a hallway for privacy. Cubicles take up so much real estate, making it hard to create these options.

Another pro of open floor plans is natural light. I've noticed that in newer buildings, everyone has access to sunlight, rather than just the senior and executive leaders in their offices.

If you’ve ever felt your noisy open-plan office makes you cranky and sends your heart racing, our new research shows you aren’t imagining it.

Prior to the pandemic 70% of office-based employees worked in open-plan offices. Employee complaints about this design are rife .

Yet there is little experimental research investigating the effects of office noise on things like cognitive performance, physiological stress and mood.

The results of our study , in experimentally controlled conditions using heart rate, skin conductivity and AI facial emotion recognition, shows the effects of that noise are very real.

We’ve found a significant causal relationship between open-plan office noise and physiological stress.

Our results show such noise heightens negative mood by 25% — and these results come from testing participants in an simulated open-plan office for just eight minutes at a time. In a real office, where workers are exposed to noise continuously during the day, we would expect the effects on stress and mood to be even greater.

How we simulated open-plan office noise

We used a simulated office setting with volunteers to compare the effects of typical open-plan office noise to a quieter private office on a range of objective and subjective measures of well-being and performance. Our carefully manipulated soundscapes included people speaking, walking, printing papers, ringing telephones, and keyboard typing noises.

Our study involved observing the same individuals “working” — participants were asked to complete a proof-reading task — under the two noise conditions. We varied the order of the sound tests to avoid bias due to fatigue and training effects. This “repeated measures experimental design” allowed us to make causal conclusions about the effects of the noise on well-being indicators.

We used sensors to track changes in heart rate and sweat response — both reliable indicators of physiological stress. We used facial emotion recognition software to assess emotional responses. We also had participants self-report their own feeling using a mood scale .

Even after a short exposure, we found a causal relationship between open-plan office noise and both stress and negative mood. Negative mood increased by 25% and sweat response by 34%.

While there was no immediate effect on reduced work performance, it is reasonable to assume such hidden stress over the longer term is detrimental to well-being and productivity.

Precise causal relationships

Our study addresses a gap in the literature by using a simulated office environment with objectively manipulated noise levels and a wide range of objective and subjective dependent variables.

Reviews in research in this field show past studies have tended to only use self-reported measures. They have not used controlled experimental conditions, nor tested sound parameters.

Comparing multiple output measures has allowed us to investigate cause-effect relationships. Much research on open-plan offices has not established direct causal connections, which is necessary to understand precise relationships, and thus the how to most effectively and efficiently reduce these stressors.

Although open-plan offices rarely present an immediate physical danger in terms of sound levels, unrelenting exposure all day intensifies their effects.

Chronically elevated levels of physiological stress are known to be detrimental to mental and physical health.

Frequently being in a negative mood is also likely to harm job satisfaction and commitment. It potentially increases the likelihood of employees leaving.

What to do about it

The pandemic has changed our tolerance for office work. Surveys show up to 70% of employees will seek new jobs if their employer does not offer flexibility to work from home some of the time. So creating a healthy work environment is more important than ever.

As organisations seek to adapt to COVID-19, many are reconsidering how they set up and use the office. Though open-plan offices are unlikely to go away any time soon, our study highlights the importance of understanding employee needs in designing work spaces.

One advantage of more employees working from home at least some of the time is a less crowded office, reducing both visual and auditory distractions.

But there are other things that can be done. Acoustic treatments and sound-masking technologies — ambient sounds designed to make other people talking less intrusive — can help. Good old-fashioned walls or partitions may also assist .

Such interventions can be costly, but so is the impact of poor office environmental quality on productivity .

And we might all feel happier about going back to the office.

Before starting your essay you need a solid essay plan.

Avoid jumping straight into the introduction, first organise your ideas.

Ametuer tutors will often over simplify this stage, however, it is incredibly important we plan effectively and extensively before starting to write.

A proper plan will prevent you having to rewrite the paragraph if you find yourself off topic later.

Here is a very brief overview of what we teach in our online ielts course.

1. First classify the question. 2. Brainstorm ideas around the idea and clarify your position for each paragraph. 3. Check the ideas correspond to the question (important for task response). 4. Develop the ideas further. Ask yourself WHY? 5. Develop examples that prove your point. 6. Organise your ideas and plan the paragraph. 7. Write your introduction, paragraphs and conclusion.

1. Classify the question

Here you can find the 5 types of IELTS task 2 questions you are likely to see in the exam.

Opinion (Agree or Disagree) Discuss (Both views + Opinion) Problem + Solution Two Part Question Advantages / Disadvantages

Classifying the question correctly will help you later determine what response you will write.

2. Brainstorm ideas and clarify your position for each paragraph.

At this stage we brainstorm possible ideas, from these ideas we can build out our paragraph.

It is important we get a clear plan established.

Our plan needs to reflect the positions we are taking in each of the paragraphs.

Do we agree or disagree? What are the problems? What are the solutions?

Below is a sample question with sample ideas and positions. In this tutorial we have hundreds of essay questions and sample ideas / answers .

Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles. Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time. Discuss both views and give your opinion. 

Paragraph 1:

YES USE LEISURE TIME FOR IMPROVING THE MIND Improve the mind through stimulus, make use of idle time, possibly even learn or improve a language with new apps

Paragraph 2:

NO, REST THE MIND .... because work can be stressful, rest can result in better performance at work ....

3. Check your ideas correspond to the question

Double check that your ideas are answering the question.

It is easy to get an idea and develop it extensively, only to find we are not really answering the essay question.

This will negatively affect your Task Response score which is 25% of the band score criteria in the writing section.

It is easier to catch the problem now - before writing the paragraph.

4. Develop the ideas further. Ask yourself why?

This is a fundamental skill for IELTS essay writing and essential for the criteria: Cohesion and Coherence.

Now to develop it further we ask ourselves, why?

...possibly even learn or improve a language with new apps

Because this can bring lots of benefits

Because learning a language improves mental agility.

5. Develop examples that prove your point.

Developing examples is an extremely valuable skill to boost your score.

You can think of studies that prove your point or even give hypothetical examples (and pick up points for grammatical range and accuracy).

6. Organise your ideas and plan the paragraph.

Now we have our: - ideas - position - examples

Now we can organise the paragraph, here is a possible structure to follow:

- introduction / topic sentence - our position - explanation (WHY) - example - paragraph close

7. Write your introduction, paragraphs and conclusion.

We only start writing after we have completed the plan we just mentioned.

At first formulating plans will take time but the process gets easier the more times you do it.

Ideally it should become an automatic procedure.

Writing the essay is also a challenge and can take a long time to perfect.

A lot of students get stuck at 6.5 because although they can write excellent paragraphs following a basic structure like the one above, it still is not enough to get Band 7.

You can write essays in perfect normal English following the structure above and still get stuck at Band 6.5.
