Miss Elizabeth Collins

Im Lizzie and I’m working on a PhD studying effect sizes, confidence intervals, and statistical power in psychology. I use mixed methods approaches to see how well psychology researchers understand statistics, and to identify the barriers which stop them from changing their statistical behaviours. My other interests include the adoption of open science behaviours, research integrity, how to teach statistics well, and womens’ health experiences.

Funded PhD opportunities – apply now and start in October 2024

The University of Stirling is investing £3.6m in doctoral research from 2023-2025 through our Institute for Advanced Studies Studentships.

We are inviting project proposals across ten inter-disciplinary research areas, and are offering both UK and international students:

• A number of 3-year full-time equivalent PhD studentships on a fully-funded basis (fees and stipend at the UKRI rate)
• Fee waivers
• Stipend bursaries for students who already hold funding awards for fees

What funding is available?

The studentship awards offered by the IAS are funded by the University of Stirling. Studentship funding awards provide full fees and a stipend set at the UKRI minimum annual award for 2024/25 (which for 2023 is £4,712 and £18,622 respectively), a number of fee waivers are available for international students, in addition there is funding available to support research training requirements.

The funded period for all awards is 3 years FTE (36 months), students may undertake their PhD on a part-time basis (50%). It is possible to enrol for a further 12 months to a maximum completion period of 48 months FTE. There is an additional fee for this period which is not funded under the terms of this studentship award.

We welcome expressions of interest from all candidates who meet the University’s entry criteria for Postgraduate Research degrees. We especially welcome expressions of interest from people from groups that have been under-represented in the UK Postgraduate Research community in the past, including people from ethnic minorities, women, disabled people, people from care-experienced or socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and candidates from the Global South. We especially welcome expressions of interest from people from groups that have been under-represented in the UK Post Graduate Research community in the past, including people from ethnic minorities, women, disabled people, people from care-experienced or socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and candidates from the Global South.

Recommendations for the offer of a studentship will be made by a panel of senior members of the University that will consider all applications from qualified candidates, supported by an adviser on equality, diversity and inclusion. The panel will consider a range of criteria, focusing on candidates’ academic excellence, evidence of advanced methodological skills and demonstrated capacity to undertake a major piece of independent research at doctoral level.

NVRC Gallery Exhibit Provides Graduate Students With Curatorial Experience

A new exhibition co-curated by three museum studies graduate students represents multiple collaborations across the University. It connects current students and alumni; pairs the College of Visual and Performing and Arts (VPA) and the National Veterans Resource Center (NVRC); and uses treasured art from the Syracuse University Libraries archives to create an interesting new military-themed public display.

“Paper Trail: Works by Veteran Photographers, Cartoonists and Sketch Artists,” is on display at the National Veterans Resource Center Gallery , which is managed by VPA’s creative arts therapy program, through Friday, Aug. 2.

Many of the images are from three cartoonist collections held at the Special Collections Research Center . Featured are works by Mort Walker (“Beetle Bailey”), Brad Anderson (“Marmaduke”) and Dave Breger (a World War II cartoonist). Other materials are by Alan Dunn and former students of the military visual journalism program at the Newhouse School of Public Communications : Kenny Holston, Preston Keres, Pablo Piedra, Ethan Rocke and Marianique Santos.

The co-curators, graduate students Ohoud Ibrahim Alfadhli, Upneet Kaur Mair and Katelyn Marie Miller, have all worked on various aspects of the exhibit as NVRC Gallery curatorial assistants.

Jennifer DeLucia

Jennifer DeLucia , assistant professor and chair of creative arts therapy, has guided the students through the project, which includes cartoons, photography and sketches that convey the complexities of the veteran experience. “As co-curators, students are empowered to take an active role in shaping the narrative and design of the exhibitions,” DeLucia says. “The interdisciplinary partnership between the art therapy and museum studies programs within VPA creates opportunities for unique dialogue as multiple perspectives inform the curatorial work, and students add fresh ideas and a great level of energy and enthusiasm.”

The experience also provides a unique interdisciplinary and experiential learning opportunity. “They are exposed to military culture and history, and that knowledge of military-connected communities will carry with them as they transition into new roles when they graduate, [helping them] address the miliary-civilian divide,” DeLucia says.

Ohoud Alfadhli

Co-curating the exhibit helped Alfadhli , an international student from Saudi Arabia, better understand the administrative functions of developing an exhibit, such as making appropriate legal arrangements for the loan of the art and copyright issues, she says. She also enjoyed delving into the archives to select exhibit items. “It allowed me to explore the artists’ works, sketches and correspondence, yet it was also challenging because I encountered numerous pieces that deserved to be exhibited.”

Upneet Mair

Mair , who is from India, says she enjoyed the installation process most. “It can be a bit exhausting, but the process is what I like about it, and once the exhibition is up, the satisfaction of doing it feels good,” she says. Mair, who has a master’s degree in fine arts, finishes the museum studies master’s program this spring. She wants to work at major museums in New York City as a curator or collection manager.

Katelyn Miller

Miller hails from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which she calls “a place where museums, history and community engagement rule every major endeavor.” She adds: “I have embraced that perspective in both my undergraduate degree and my graduate career here.”

Miller used software to plot the exhibits in the gallery space, inputting artwork dimensions to develop an accessible and efficient design, an aspect of exhibition work that she particularly enjoyed. “Working on this exhibition from concept to installation has been a valuable exercise in collaboration and exhibition research and design. This space is an ideal environment for developing my skills as a museum professional, and I hope that ‘Paper Trail’ conveys this effort to its visitors,” she says. Miller wants to work in an institution that provides the community with learning resources, such as a national park, library or museum.

“The NVRC was intentionally designed to nurture interdisciplinary programming to advance the social, economic and wellness concerns of veterans and their families,” says J. Michael Haynie, vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and innovation and executive director of the University’s D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families. “Our collaboration with VPA at the NVRC Gallery is a unique example of Syracuse University’s commitment to being the best place for veterans, and I encourage the campus community to visit this impressive exhibit.”

HLA Graduate Students Placed at ASPB Midwest Regional Meeting

Shannon Stirling  (PhD student, Dudareva lab) won 1st place in the graduate student oral presentation category at the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) Midwest regional meeting.

George Meyer  (PhD student, Widhalm lab), alongside PULSe rotation student Amanda Navodani, won 3rd place in the graduate student poster presentation category.

The ASPB Midwest meeting was hosted by the College of Agriculture and Center for Plant Biology at the Purdue Memorial Union March 16th-17th. It included over 225 researchers from 15 states across the Midwest and featured 22 oral presentations and 115 posters.

Stirling graduate set to transform fencing in Scotland

A fencing coach and graduate of the University of Stirling is helping to transform the sport in Scotland.

Philip Carson, who graduated this week with an MSc in Sport Performance Coaching, is using the skills developed on the course to help re-shape how the Olympic sport of fencing is coached.

Having been involved in the sport since he was a schoolboy – Philip was in Scotland’s Commonwealth fencing team in 1986 but had his career halted by injury – he coached his two daughters to become Scottish and British champions.  Following a career with the police in London, he relocated to Edinburgh in 2012, and has since become a major force in fencing coaching north of the border.

Philip founded Salle Ossian Fencing Club in Perth – providing the first training facility of its kind in Scotland to support the progression of children in competitive fencing – and has since coached young people to both national and international championships.

The Head Coach said: “The question among parents was, ‘if a kid really wanted to go for it in fencing, where would they go?’ There was nothing, at that time to meet those needs available in Scotland.

“Now, we have fencers competing in the world’s top competitions and producing the best results for both Team Scotland and the British team.”

A recent example of this success is Salle Ossian students Joshua Bryden and Miller Hetherington, both of whom returned from Italy in February having represented Great Britain in the European Championships U17 competition.

Impressed by his success, while studying with Stirling, Philip was approached by National governing body Scottish Fencing to help improve coaching in Scotland. He took on the challenge on the condition that he could take a completely fresh look at the sport.

"The MSc has been enormously helpful"

He said: “It’s about changing the way coaches coach. Fencing is more than 300 years old as a sport and pretty much the way it was taught then, is the way it is being taught now. It isn’t relevant to the modern game, from the technical aspect to the pedagogy to how we teach.” 

He’s now working on a new strategy to overhaul and update coach education, praising his university learning for supporting him along the way.

“The MSc has been enormously helpful,” he said. “I wanted to challenge my thinking and learn more about the science behind sports coaching. The course was distance learning, with access to the material and lecturers constantly on tap, which allowed me to balance study and work perfectly.”

This month, Philip will join 11 of his students at Challenge Wratislavia in Poland – a major international fencing tournament for children under 15 – which means he is unable to attend his graduation ceremony in Stirling.

He said: “It’s an incredible event, with a similar atmosphere to the Commonwealth Games. It gives our students the experience of performing at a very large international event as well as meeting competitors from across the globe. It will give them a taste of what is possible if they continue in fencing.”
