Applicants to the Doctorate of Social Work online program  must hold an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program. Three years of relevant post-MSW work experience is required .

Online DSW Classes and Course Work

Students attend live, weekly classes where they can interact face-to-face with classmates and the expert faculty who designed the program. DSW Capstone

The DSW curriculum culminates with the capstone project. The capstone provides the opportunity for students to  explore a real-world topic or problem in the field, further establish their identities as advanced social work professionals, and assert their expertise within a specific area of interest.  During the final semester, students will present their capstone to classmates and DSW faculty.

The Simmons DSW capstone project allows students to explore unlimited topics within the field and truly push the bounds of their knowledge. The capstone can apply to any or all of the three curricular focus areas and will challenge students to synthesize what they have learned throughout the program. Students have the liberty to  be creative with the medium and delivery of their project — whether it takes the form of a website or a plan to take their private practice in new and inspiring directions.

Capstone Seminars

Students will attend capstone-specific classes with a small group of peers as they explore their topics and produce their projects. These seminars will serve as a place where students can receive support and feedback as well as gain more focused attention from faculty.

One-on-One Faculty Meetings

Live capstone seminar sessions will allow students to work closely with and receive mentorship from a Simmons faculty member. This faculty member will serve as a guide throughout the capstone experience and help students continuously develop their identities as DSWs. During these meetings, students can discuss their topics, talk through their progress, and receive feedback.

DSW vs. PhD

Both a Doctorate of Social Work and a PhD in social work are terminal degrees that prepare professionals in the field with advanced knowledge and research opportunities. However, there are a number of distinctions between the two. While both are challenging degrees, asking students to rise to the most advanced levels of knowledge within their field, their rigorous curricula typically have different outcomes.

A DSW prepares students to apply what they learn and research to their practice in the field.  A DSW student may take a new approach they learn in class one day and apply it to their work with a client the next day. Program Curriculum

Doctorate in Social Work (DSW)

Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) Program Curriculum The DSW is a part-time, online program that is convenient for working professionals.

The core curriculum is designed to provide students with expertise in linking social work practice theory to conducting trauma-responsive practice, utilizing research for policymaking decisions, executive leadership in human service organizations, and the dissemination of practice knowledge to the practice community through scholarship and conference presentation. The program requires a minimum of 50 credits of course-based graduate study, plus a Capstone project. The curriculum consists of 16, 3-credit courses. Upon completion of online courses, students are required to enroll and complete the activities for a 2-credit Doctoral “Practice Advance” Capstone (SW 799) each semester until the completion of all degree requirements. It is expected that students can complete the Capstone in one semester.

Part-time Program

Part-time students must be enrolled in at least 6 credits of online coursework each semester. Two courses are offered each semester. In fall and spring semesters, courses are taken consecutively; in summer semesters, courses are taken simultaneously. Each online course is eight weeks in duration and consist of both asynchronous and synchronous components. Live, synchronous meetings are held on Saturday mornings and attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to complete all requirements and successfully defend their major product within three years from the start of program matriculation.

Year 1 (18 Credits)

Theoretical And Empirical Foundations Of Trauma And Resilience

This course reviews theoretical models of trauma and resilience and the interdisciplinary empirical evidence that frames our understanding of the prevalence and impact of trauma across the lifespan. Neuro-psychological, cognitive, attachment, and sociological-cultural perspectives are integrated and applied to a framework for development of trauma-informed knowledge and skills for leadership roles in clinical social work practice and social justice advocacy. Students will learn about measurement of empirical constructs and testing of research questions in order to understand the application of trauma and resiliency research to clinical practice, executive leadership, and social justice advocacy. (3 credits)

Neurobiology Of Trauma And Resilience

This course builds on the theoretical and empirical foundations of trauma and resilience, emphasizing fundamental concepts of the neurobiology of healing, transformation, and resiliency. This course will focus on the importance of integrating neurobiological research in order to understand a range of social problems, how therapeutic alliances with caring social work professionals change brain structures and functions, and how programs and policies shape brains and behavior. The course will review emerging trends from cognitive neuroscience and brain plasticity research on how these advances can be used by social workers to improve mental health treatment, program development, and policies. In addition, this course will prepare doctoral-level social workers to translate and integrate neuroscience knowledge into their advanced clinical practice, leadership, teaching, and supervisory and research endeavors. (3 credits)

Integrating Qualitative Research Into Social Work Practice And Policy Decision-Making

This course emphasizes the importance of being an informed and effective consumer of interdisciplinary qualitative research. It focuses on teaching students the skills to identify and effectively understand and utilize existing qualitative research to guide social work practice and policy decision-making. (3 credits)

Integrating Quantitative Research Into Social Work Practice And Policy Decision-Making

This course emphasizes the importance of being an informed and effective consumer of interdisciplinary quantitative research. It focuses on teaching students to identify and utilize existing best practice quantitative research that pertains to observational and experimental designs, sampling, measurement, and descriptive and inferential statistics. This utilization will guide social work practice and policy decision-making. (3 credits)

Advanced Trauma-Informed Conceptualization And Service Delivery

This course conceptualizes individual presenting problems, family functioning, and community dynamics through the lens of trauma. The course focuses on organizational assessment of trauma-informed systems of care. The art and science of trauma-informed assessment, engagement, and intervention are examined. Students will develop strategies for transformative paradigm changes in service delivery systems. (3 credits)

Social Policy Analysis And Change

This course examines methods of policy development, evaluation, and policy reform. Students are engaged in activities designed to strengthen their roles as agents of change. (3 credits)

Year 2 (18 Credits)

Trauma-Informed Interventions I

This course advances the intersection of evidence-based cognitive-behavioral and neuro-physiological interventions with practice wisdom to identify, assess, and develop appropriate intervention stations designed to mitigate the manifestations of trauma symptoms. (3 credits)

Trauma-Informed Interventions II

This course explores evidence-based integrative trauma-responsive therapeutic modalities. Students are exposed to variety of integrated therapies, which may include expressive arts, yoga, mindfulness, meditation, and movement. (3 credits)

Trauma-Informed Clinical Supervision

Historically, the two primary goals in social work supervision have focused on protecting the welfare of the client while enhancing the professional growth and development of the supervisee. This course enables supervisors to fulfill these two goals by incorporating contemporary critical and reflective practice theories that are informed by the various ways trauma can impact the worker/client relationship as well as the supervisor/supervisee relationship. (3 credits)

Executive Leadership And Administration

This course highlights the essential roles and responsibilities of an executive leader and advances administrative skills in the areas of resource management, marketing and technology, employee and community relations, and strategies to build an effective organizational culture that elevates the vision and mission of the organization. (3 credits)

Applied Research In Human Service Organization

Building on the theoretical, qualitative, and quantitative courses previously taken in this program, students will enter the dual role of both developer and consumer of applied research within the context of clinical and/or administrative roles. (3 credits)

Advocacy with Marginalized Populations: Macro Intervention Strategies

Within a historical trauma-informed context, students examine a variety of advocacy interventions and strategies designed to effect change. Utilizing the principles of applied research, students will identify a marginalized population and select and implement an advocacy strategy, such as community organizing, social action, legislative advocacy and/or campaigning to address the prevailing issue. (3 credits)

Year 3 (18 Credits)

Social Work Education: Issues and Methods

This course extends the doctoral student’s proficiency beyond the traditional social work classroom to include an understanding of how adult learners learn, how to structure an educational unit, the imperative of competence in digital-based education processes, as well as strategies for success at the traditional academic arena. This course provides theoretical background to enable the doctoral student to better understand and develop competency in social work education teaching tasks, as well as requisite skills for effective presentation of social work practice content. The goal of this course is to prepare doctoral students for leadership roles in social work education as well as practitioners who are adept at training methodologies, curriculum development, and presentation delivery at various levels. The course provides a unique opportunity for engaging with a senior social work education mentor who will assist the student in their development and demonstration of teaching an assigned educational unit through a four-week mentorship that involves classroom practice and discourse around teaching experiences. (3 credits)

Scholar-Practitioner Seminar I

This residency-based seminar engages students as active participants in contributing to social work research and competency building in scholarly writing and publishing. The course offers various resources to promote successful publications, including editing systems, guidelines for submitting manuscripts, and the ethics and principles of publications in preparation of writing their conceptual draft of a manuscript. (3 credits)

Scholar-Practitioner Seminar II

This course prepares students for candidacy. Students are expected to have and be prepared to present the first draft of their manuscript. (3 credits)

Doctoral Capstone

Students work with a Review Panel to finalize their “Practice Advance” manuscript and submit the manuscript for publication. The successful presentation of the manuscript in both written form and oral summary, along with the receipt of the submitted manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal, serve as the final degree requirements for the DSW program. (2 credits)

UNC School of Social Work ranked No. 4 best graduate school for social work in the nation

Tied for No. 2 public, No. 4 overall, UNC School of Social Work is recognized alongside a score of Carolina programs ranked Top 10 in the nation in their respective categories by the magazine.  

Months after being ranked fourth in national research and development (R&D) expenditures among R1 higher education institutions, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work earned another No. 4 ranking today.  

The School of Social Work moved up three spots in the latest U.S. News & World Report “Best Graduate Schools” rankings , rising to a tie for fourth in the nation among the 319 surveyed social work schools accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education.  

The School ranked No. 1 among schools of social work across the Southeast and tied for second nationally among public universities. 

Dean Ramona Denby-Brinson said being ranked second among all public university social work programs was especially meaningful due to the school’s responsibility to serve local, national and global communities. 

“Our new national ranking is exciting news,” Denby-Brinson said. “Among many measures of success, the ranking recognizes the tremendous contributions of our faculty and staff. Our MSW (Master of Social Work) program is preparing practitioners, researchers and advocates who improve life for thousands of people each day. We are honored to be recognized by our peers for the excellence displayed by our faculty in all they do.” 

Executive Vice Provost Amy Locklear Hertel, a clinical assistant professor at the School, said “The UNC School of Social Work is a true asset on campus, to our state, and the globe. By drawing our attention to pressing issues of our most vulnerable populations, to developing strong communities and systems, to informing policy as well as practice, the UNC School of Social Work is preparing social service practitioners and researchers to fully ‘advance equity, transform systems, and improves lives’ — just as the School’s mission states.” 

She went on to say, “It is an honor to be a clinical faculty member in the School.” 

Since arriving at the School as dean in August 2021, Denby-Brinson worked closely with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners to establish a strategic plan that helped to elevate the graduate programs, modernize the curriculum, and increase student enrollment by providing access and flexible degree offerings while using advanced learning modalities and proven pedagogical tools.  

“Our graduates are prepared to work with individuals, families and communities to solve complex problems,” Denby-Brinson said. “The practice approaches that we teach derive from the impactful research produced by our faculty. We have a strong faculty, and they are tackling entrenched issues and devising real world solutions.” 

“I’m delighted to hear this news, and to note that the School has consistently ranked in the Top 10 since 1997,” said Dean Emeritus Jack Richman.

The latest rankings were compiled based on peer assessments from administrators, deans and faculty of accredited degree programs and are compiled on a scale of one (marginal) to five (outstanding). The surveys were sent in fall 2023 and early 2024.

Pros and Cons of Getting a Doctorate Online

From heightened career advancement opportunities to increased salary potential, there are many reasons why people are choosing to earn doctorate degrees in 2024. Thanks to the proliferation of online doctorate programs, working professionals no longer have to press pause on their jobs to attend classes or complete coursework. Students who earn degrees — whether online or in-person — from accredited institutions can feel at ease about the credibility of their program. When a trusted accrediting body gives a program its stamp of approval, that means it meets high educational standards.  

There are several accrediting bodies in the United States, many of which focus on certain types of degree programs or regions of the country. AACSB, for example, accredits business schools. The scope of accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) includes distance and correspondence education for eleven states and Latin America. 

Time Management  

Personalized learning, asynchronous instruction and virtual coursework mean that online doctoral students must create schedules and establish the structure for working toward their degrees. Individuals who struggle with time management or self-discipline may find that an in-person educational experience provides them with the rigor and boundaries they need to succeed academically.

Are online MSW programs respected?

Few higher education programs are as conducive to the online format as a master’s degree in social work.

With the field-based requirements to earn a degree, the flexibility of an online program creates more opportunities for students to work hands-on in their communities.

Boise State University’s Master of Social Work Online (MSW) is committed to allowing students to complete their field work in their local communities, strengthening their connections and providing insights into challenges and needs. This often leads to employment after graduation, as well.

But are online Master of Social Work programs respected? With accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Board of Accreditation, which Boise State’s social work programs have had since 1992, you are assured of receiving the same quality education online as you would in person.

CSWE accreditation ensures that a program has sufficient resources to meet its mission and goals and the Board of Accreditation has verified that it demonstrates compliance with all sections of the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.

In December 2023, Boise State’s Master of Social Work Online celebrated its 1,000th graduate , solidifying its legacy of preparing skilled and compassionate social workers to positively impact the communities they serve.

Advantages of Online Learning
