Third party logistics:a literature review and research agenda
Selviaridis, Kostas and Spring, Martin (2007) Third party logistics:a literature review and research agenda. The International Journal of Logistics Management, 18 (1). pp. 125-150. ISSN 0957-4093
Purpose – To provide a taxonomy of third party logistics (3PL) research and, based on that, to develop a research agenda for this field of study. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed 3PL research classification framework is based on a comprehensive literature review, which concentrates on peer‐reviewed journal papers published within the period 1990‐2005. A total of 114 academic sources have been retrieved and analysed in terms of research purpose and nature, method employed, theoretical approach and level of analysis. Findings – The review reveals that 3PL research is empirical‐descriptive in nature and that it generally lacks a theoretical foundation. Survey research is the dominant method employed, reflecting the positivist research tradition within logistics. It identifies certain knowledge gaps and develops five propositions for future research. It suggests that focus should be directed towards more normative, theory‐driven and qualitative method‐based studies. It also argues that further empirical research in relation to 3PL design/implementation and fourth party logistics services is needed. Originality/value – This paper fulfils an identified need for a comprehensive classification framework of 3PL studies. It essentially provides both academics and practitioners with a conceptual map of existing 3PL research and also points out opportunities for future research.

Purpose The purpose of this research paper is to provide a cross national framework of the literature review in the field of Third party Logistics (3PL). Design/methodology/approach The comprehensive literature review including articles and peer-reviewed research papers published in peer reviewed international journals, selected reports and working papers between 1995 and 2014 have been examined. A total of 230 documents and papers have been scanned and 120 research papers have been studied, classified and analysed on the basis of profile-country wise, author and factor profiling, content and methodology-related issues. Findings The study is a wide-ranging review of the literature that highlights the work of researchers in 3PL domain. The paper attends to literature on variables like Service Quality (SQ), Organisational Effectiveness (OE) and Relationship Management (RM) along with several other variables used for the purpose of the researches conducted in the defined time period and reveals the empirical nature of 3PL researches. Researchers across the globe have used statistical tools like Structured Equation Modelling (SEM), Factor Analysis, SERVQUAL and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for the purpose data analysis of their research work. Research limitations/implications Care has been taken to conduct a thorough search. Possibility however remains that some articles might have been missed out accidentally. Since the coverage has been exhaustive, it is hoped that possible omissions would not significantly alter the review and conclusion. Future research work should focus on managing 4PL and 5PL processes, supply chain partnership and their long term customer relationships. Originality/value The paper fulfils the need for a reorganized and additional theoretical classification of 3PL studies. This paper identifies some lesser explored areas and provides a framework for performance management variables and tools to research academicians and practitioners.

Abstract. In the global competitive environment, companies not only improve the quality of service and increase the efficiency, they also decrease the cost by means of third-party logistics (3PLs). 3PLs, therefore, is an important strategy for companies desiring to gain a competitive advantage and 3PLs provider selection plays a critical role for the success of outsourcing. Nevertheless, the level of uncertainty in the selection process is relatively high and need to be carefully considered. Hence, in order to select a proper 3PLs provider, integration of the Fuzzy AHP and Evaluation based on Distance from Average Solution (EDAS) has offered a novel integrated model, in which Fuzzy AHP is used for calculating priority weights of each criteria and EDAS is employed to achieve the final ranking of 3PLs providers. Besides, in order to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model, it is validated by a case study. Cost together with quality, and professionalism are found to be the most important factors for 3PLs provider selection. Consequently, the advantage of this model is that it is simple to apprehend and easy to apply. The use of the proposed model leads to the selection of suitable alternative successfully in other selection problems.

Outsourcing logistics operations in circular economy towards to sustainable development goals
One of novel manners to achieve sustainable development is concentrating on circular economy in order to manage greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and waste. It also helps to protect the environment and optimize usage of input resources. The main element of circular economy is closed-loop supply chain which covers both forward and reverse products flows. This study aims to outsource logistics operations in a closed-loop supply chain. An innovative analytical multi-step fuzzy decision-making method is proposed to rank sustainable third-party logistics

Abstract. Third-party logistics (TPL) has attracted considerable research attention in the recent past. Despite the growing body of literature on this topic, precious little effort has been devoted to synthesizing the overall state of art of research on TPL. In this paper, an attempt is made to review the status of literature on TPL.

Worldwide it is estimated that more than 85% of the main companies used external logistics services, with growth rates of this services market projected between 18 and 22 percent per year. This trend has generated a growing interest in supply chain researchers to propose different approaches for the selection and evaluation of the performance of third party logistics (3PL).
