Many people (and websites) confuse the relationship between imagery and figurative language. Usually this confusion involves one of two things:

Describing imagery as a type of figurative language.
Describing imagery as the use of figurative language to create descriptions that engage the physical senses.

Both are wrong.

A Quick Definition of Figurative Language

Figurative language is language that creates a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation of the words. For instance, the phrase "you are my sunshine" is figurative language (a metaphor , to be precise). It's not literally saying that you are a beam of light from the sun, but rather is creating an association between "you" and "sunshine" to say that you make the speaker feel warm and happy and also give the speaker life in the same way sunshine does.

Imagery can be Literal or Figurative

Imagery is neither a type of figurative language nor does it solely involve the use of figurative language to create descriptions for one simple reason: imagery can be totally literal. Take the lines from Robert Frost's "After-Apple Picking:"

I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend. And I keep hearing from the cellar bin The rumbling sound Of load on load of apples coming in.

These lines contain powerful imagery: you can feel the swaying ladder, see the bending boughs, and hear the rumbling of the apples going into the cellar bin. But it is also completely literal: every word means exactly what it typically means. So this imagery involves no figurative language at all.

Now, that doesn't mean imagery can't use figurative language. It can! You could write, for instance, "The apples rumbled into the cellar bin like a stampede of buffalo," using a simile to create a non-literal comparison that emphasizes just how loudly those apples were rumbling. To sum up, then: imagery can involve the use of figurative language, but it doesn't have to.

Imagery Examples

Imagery is found in all sorts of writing, from fiction to non-fiction to poetry to drama to essays.

Example of Imagery in Romeo and Juliet

In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet , Romeo describes his first sight of Juliet with rich visual imagery:

O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! Her beauty hangs upon the cheek of night, Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear

This imagery does involve the use of figurative language, as Romeo describes Juliet's beauty in the nighttime by using a simile that compares her to a jewel shining against dark skin.

Example of Imagery in "Birches"

In the early lines of his poem "Birches," Robert Frost describes the birches that give his poem it's title. The language he uses in the description involves imagery of sight, movement, and sound.

When I see birches bend to left and right Across the lines of straighter darker trees, I like to think some boy's been swinging them. But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay As ice-storms do. Often you must have seen them Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning After a rain. They click upon themselves As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.

Example of Imagery in The Road

The novelist Cormac McCarthy is known, among other things, for his powerful imagery. In this passage from his novel The Road , note how he uses imagery to describe the fire on the distant ridge, the feel of the air, and even the feeling inside that the man experiences.

A forest fire was making its way along the tinderbox ridges above them, flaring and shimmering against the overcast like the northern lights. Cold as it was he stood there a long time. The color of it moved something in him long forgotten.

Example of Imagery in Moby-Dick

The passage ago appears at the very end of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick and describes the ocean in the moments after a destroyed ship has sunk into it. Notice how Melville combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic imagery ("small fowls flew"; "white surf beat"), and how the imagery allows you to almost feel the vortex created by the sinking ship and then the silence left behind when it closes.

Now small fowls flew screaming over the yet yawning gulf; a sullen white surf beat against its steep sides; then all collapsed, and the great shroud of the sea rolled on as it rolled five thousand years ago.

Example of Imagery in Song of Solomon

In this passage from Song of Solomon , Toni Morrison uses visual imagery to capture the color and motion of the table cloth as it settles over the table. She also uses figurative language ("like a lighthouse keeper...") to describe the way that Ruth in the passage looks at the water stain on the table. The figurative language doesn't just describe the color or sound or smell of the scene, it captures the obsessive way that Ruth glances at the water stain, and the way that seeing it gives her a sense of ease. Here the figurative language deepens the imagery of the scene.

As she unfolded the white linen and let it billow over the fine mahogany table, she would look once more at the large water mark. She never set the table or passed through the dining room without looking at it. Like a lighthouse keeper drawn to his window to gaze once again at the sea, or a prisoner automatically searching out the sun as he steps into the yard for his hour of exercise, Ruth looked for the water mark several times during the day.

Example of Imagery in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

The main character of Patrick Suskind's novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer has a supernaturally powerful sense of smell. In this passage, which describes the smells of an 18th century city, the narrator captures the nature of 18th century cities—their grittiness and griminess—through the smell of their refuse, and how in such a world perfume might be not just a luxury but a necessity. Further, he makes readers aware of a world of smell of which they normally are only slightly aware, and how a super-sensitive sense of smell could both be powerful but also be overwhelmingly unpleasant. And finally, through smell the narrator is able to describe just how gross humans can be, how they are in some ways just another kind of animal, and how their bodies are always failing or dying. Through descriptions of smell, in other words, the novel also describes an overlooked aspect of the human condition.

In the period of which we speak, there reigned in the cities a stench barely conceivable to us modern men and women. The streets stank of manure, the courtyards of urine, the stairwells stank of moldering wood and rat droppings, the kitchens of spoiled cabbage and mutton fat; the unaired parlors stank of stale dust, the bedrooms of greasy sheets, damp featherbeds, and the pungently sweet aroma of chamber pots. The stench of sulfur rose from the chimneys, the stench of caustic lyes from the tanneries, and from the slaughterhouses came the stench of congealed blood. People stank of sweat and unwashed clothes; from their mouths came the stench of rotting teeth, from their bellies that of onions, and from their bodies, if they were no longer very young, came the stench of rancid cheese and sour milk and tumorous disease.

Why Do Writers Use Imagery?

Imagery is essential to nearly every form of writing, and writers use imagery for a wide variety of reasons:

It engages readers: Imagery allows readers to see and feel what's going on in a story. It fully engages the reader's imagination, and brings them into the story.
It's interesting: Writing without imagery would be dry and dull, while writing with imagery can be vibrant and gripping.
It can set the scene and communicate character: The description of how a person or place looks, moves, sounds, smells, does as much to tell you about that person or place as any explanation can. Imagery is not just "window dressing," it is the necessary sensory detail that allows a reader to understand the world and people being described, from their fundamental traits to their mood.
It can be symbolic: Imagery can both describe the world and establish symbolic meanings that deepen the impact of the text. Such symbolism can range from the weather (rain occurring in moments of sadness) to symbolism that is even deeper or more complex, such as the way that Moby-Dick layers multiple meanings through his descriptions of the whiteness of the whale.

The word imagery originates from the Old French imagerie, meaning “figure” (13 c). Imagery first appeared in English in the middle of the 14th century.

Types of Imagery

While people generally think of imagery as something that can be seen, literary imagery actually pertains to all five senses.

Visual imagery : This draws on the sense of sight to create pictures in readers’ heads; for example, “Her lips glistened red like ripe cherries .” Writers invoke color, size, etc., to help readers visualize scenes more vividly.
Auditory imagery : This evokes the sense of sound. It often involves the use of onomatopoeia , when words mimic the sound they represent: “The alarm clock beeped .” Sounds can help describe any auditory moment, such as dialogue in how one talks or a noisy setting like the roaring ocean. Depending on how the sound is expressed, it enhances mood, such as chaos, tension, or tranquility.
Olfactory imagery : Phrasing that makes use of the sense of smell is olfactory imagery; for example, “He smelled like the ocean, salty and fresh .” Because smell is heavily linked to memory, writers may use olfactory imagery to recreate a certain mood or feeling for readers.

While this sentence provides information about the baby’s appearance, readers have no concrete details about what attributes the baby possesses that make it cute. Instead of being able to picture the baby, readers must trust the writer’s value judgement.

Now, consider this revised sentence:

“The baby was as pudgy as a marshmallow and had giant brown eyes .”

Now, the writer uses visual imagery to describe the baby so readers can clearly picture it in their heads. As opposed to the original sentence’s vagueness, the new sentence is specific and detailed.

Adjectives can be a writer’s best friend when it comes to creating strong, vivid descriptions, including characteristics like age, texture, color, and scent. Writers present all this information so that readers can imagine exactly what they intend.

No adjectives: “The apple is on the table”
Specific adjectives: “The bruised, green apple is on the table.”

The Effects of Imagery

Because imagery involves the five senses, it allows readers to feel as if they are experiencing what the writer is describing. Therefore, readers can better connect with the characters and situations, as well as reflect on their own lives and experiences. This makes reading feel more vivid, active, and personal. Writing that uses strong imagery ensures readers will keep paying attention.

Imagery can often be symbolic. When a certain image or detail is repeated throughout a piece of writing, the writer may want readers to link it to a larger theme in the work.

Examples include:

A burning candle to evoke how brief life is
A setting sun to symbolize a death or ending
A long road to suggest life’s journey

When images are frequently used, they can become clichés , overused phrases or imagery that is considered hackneyed or commonplace. Common clichés include:

Red like a rose
Sweet as honey
Black like night
Cold as ice

Readers lose interest when something is described in a way they have seen or heard many times before. Because of this, good writers avoid clichés. Instead, they create fresh, new images.

Literal Imagery vs. Figurative Imagery

Literal imagery describes things exactly as they are without hidden or symbolic meaning. This is also called descriptive imagery. Writers often use adjectives to create literal imagery.

“The sky was periwinkle blue with a few scattered, wispy clouds .”
“Her strong perfume gave me a headache.”
“The blanket was soft and”

Figurative language uses strong comparisons to go beyond words’ literal meanings and presents information in a new way. Imagery created using figurative language is also referred to as “poetic imagery.”

“The sky was as blue as the ocean and the clouds sailed across it like white boats. ”
“Her perfume smelled like a garden of fresh roses in bloom. ”
“The blanket was as soft as cat’s fur. ”

Figurative Imagery and Other Literary Devices

Figurative imagery is often associated with figures of speech —literary devices that intentional deviate from words’ literal meaning to embellish the language.

Common figures of speech that invoke powerful images include:

Simile : A simile is an explicit comparison between two or more similar things. When constructing a simile, writers use the words like or as to make the comparison clear: “The sun was as yellow as an egg yolk .” The image of an egg yolk to describe the sun emphasizes its deep, strong color.
Metaphor : A metaphor is an implicit comparison between two or more things. Metaphors do not require the use of like or as because they imply the compared objects are exactly the same. Consider these lines from Sylvia Plath’s poem, “Metaphors”: “An elephant, a ponderous house / A melon strolling on two tendrils.” Plath uses the images of an elephant, a house, and a melon walking to describe the uncomfortable sizes pregnant women experience.
Synecdoche : A synecdoche is a figure of speech wherein a part stands in for the whole. For example, performers may refer to the stage as “the boards.” Theater stages are often made of wood, so while the synecdoche only invokes an image of the stage’s wooden boards, readers know the entire stage is being referenced.
Personification : Personification is the representation of an abstract concept in human form. This literary device is frequently misunderstood. People often believe personification is when writers give human characteristics to a nonhuman thing (e.g., “the wind sighed sadly”), but that is only part of what personification encompasses. The Grim Reaper is an example of personifying a concept; it allows the reader to visualize death as an ominous person. Additionally, personification occurs when a writer gives an object more animation than it already possesses: “The yellow fog rubs its back upon the window-panes.” This example is both visual and tactile; readers can picture the fog as if it is an animal and therefore imagine how softly it touches the windows.

Examples of Imagery in Literature

1. F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

In the last sentence of the classic novel, narrator Nick Carraway tells the readers:

So we beat on, boats against the current, born ceaselessly back into the past.

Fitzgerald employs visual imagery through the use of metaphor, comparing people to boats. Like vessels in the water, people try to move forward in their lives, but the efforts and optimistic dreams of the future are ultimately futile because the powerful influence of the past push back harder, like a strong current.

2. Nalo Hopkinson, Brown Girl in the Ring

In the Prologue to her dystopian novel, Hopkinson uses visual imagery to describe the setting by saying:

Imagine a cartwheel half-mired in muddy water, its hub just clearing the surface. The spokes are the satellite cities that form Metropolitan Toronto: Etobicoke and York to the west; North York in the north; Scarborough and East York to the east. The Toronto city core is the hub.

Hopkinson evokes the image of a cartwheel to allow readers to visualize the setting’s geographic layout. This imagery also connects to an older era of farming to set up the broader context of a dystopian future where Hopkinson’s characters have returned to an agrarian lifestyle to survive.

3. Sandra Cisneros, “Puro Amor”

In this short story, Cisneros uses tactile imagery to illustrate the close bond between the character Missus and her pets. While Missus sleeps, the dogs are:

[…] warming her back, radiating heat like meteorites […]

This simile compares the dogs’ warmth against Missus’s back to the heat of meteorites. This hyperbolic description also expands on the dogs’ warmth by lending an otherworldly quality to it. To Missus, the dogs are a heavenly presence.

4. William Shakespeare, Othello

In Act III, Scene iii, Iago tells Othello to beware of jealousy, calling it the:

green-eyed monster which doth mock

the meat it feeds upon.

This personification of jealousy makes the audience understand how powerful and dangerous the emotion truly is. When Othello eventually succumbs to his jealous rage, the audience can more easily understand how this monster of jealousy overcame his feelings of tenderness for his wife Desdemona.

Describing the monster as “green-eyed” does double duty. It allows the audience to imagine the monster more vividly, and the color green, commonly used to depict jealousy, helps reinforce the play’s central theme.

5. Helen Macdonald, H Is For Hawk

In this memoir about her father’s death, Macdonald describes a hawk she is taming with olfactory imagery:

The hawk had filled the house with wildness as a bowl of lilies fills the house with scent.

This simile allows readers to understand how the hawk’s untamed nature permeates Macdonald’s house. Much like the scent of fresh lilies can take over an enclosed space, so too does the hawk’s primitiveness overwhelm her home’s civility.

6. Cecilia Ekbäck , Wolf Winter

In Part One of this historic novel about Swedish Lapland, teenage Frederika uses auditory imagery when she remembers going fishing with her father:

The river poured from his lifted oars with the sound of waterfalls.”

This description allows the reader to hear the water’s movement as her father rows. The word “waterfalls” also evokes a visual image of the water sliding off his oars.

7. Mary Oliver, “Mushrooms”

Near the opening of this poem, Oliver describes how mushrooms sprout in the wild:

red and yellow skulls

pummeling upward

through leaves

This metaphor compares mushroom caps to skulls, producing a strong image of the mushrooms’ round, smooth shape. This is also a symbolic warning of how dangerous wild mushrooms can be; since many mushrooms are poisonous, sampling them can be fatal.

What is imagery?

In terms of writing, imagery is more than creating a pretty picture for the reader. Imagery pertains to a technique for the writer to appeal to the reader’s five senses as a means to convey the essence of an event. The five senses include sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. The writer does not need to employ all five senses, only those senses that most effectively convey, transport the reader into that event.

Why use imagery?

Imagery engages the reader with specific sensory details. Imagery creates atmosphere/mood, causing the reader to feel a certain emotion. For example, a scary scene includes details that cause a reader to be frightened.

Example from Edgar Allan Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death”

The figure was tall and gaunt, and shrouded from head to foot in the habiliments of the grave. The mask which concealed the visage was made so nearly to resemble the countenance of a stiffened corpse that the closest scrutiny must have had difficulty in detecting the cheat. And yet all this might have been endured, if not approved, by the mad revellers around. But the mummer had gone so far as to assume the type of the Red Death. His vesture was dabbled in blood — and his broad brow, with all the features of the face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror.

Imagery can be used throughout an entire essay, such as a description essay that focuses on a particular event. Writers should first decide what atmosphere/mood they want to create for their readers and then focus solely on the sensory details that convey that particular atmosphere/mood. For example, if a writer wanted to share the experience of a favorite holiday meal, then s/he would focus on the smells and tastes of all the food and the memories that those smells and tastes conjure. The hectic grocery shopping for all the ingredients would be omitted since that would not express the nostalgia of the meal.

Imagery can also be used per individual paragraph as a means to illustrate a point. For example, in an essay arguing for a ban on smoking, one paragraph could detail the damage to lungs caused by smoking.

A pine tree with pigs instead of pinecones, reading: "The majestic porky pine tree of North America defies categorization."

A brainstorming technique for imagery involves drawing a picture by focusing on one sense at a time. So, find a blank sheet of paper and various colored pencils.

First and easiest would be sight. Slow down to mentally picture every object, shape, color, person, and so on in the scene. Draw, as best you can, representations of each of those visual details. (Only you will see this drawing; no need to stress over perfection.)

Next, take a different sense, such as sounds, and record those sounds on paper with various colors, symbols, or onomatopoeia. (Again, do the best you can to represent what you heard. Your goal is to remind yourself of the sounds, not create a work of art.)

Next, take a different sense and record that particular sense on paper with various colors and symbols.

The objective is to slow down and focus on each sense individually rather than trying to remember the scene all at once. By slowing down and envisioning each sense on paper, you can determine which senses most accurately create the atmosphere/mood for the essay and then apply only those senses in the essay.

Capt. Ryan O’Meara loved the water, his yacht crew, and his work on M/Y Pipe Dream , a 112-foot Westport. He was in the midst of it all when he died of a heart attack in Chub Cay in the Bahamas. Stew Katie O’Meara found her husband in their cabin. The yacht’s crew as well as crew from nearby boats tried to resuscitate him but he was dead on May 27. He was 40.

“He loved being the captain of this boat,” Katie O’Meara said. “When we got asked, ‘Who’s the captain?’ he would say, ‘I am’ and people would question, ‘You’re the captain?’ I guess he just looked like he was having too much fun.”

Capt. O’Meara enjoyed scuba diving, snorkelling, paddleboarding, everything in the water, but he was “not a big fisherman.”

“He loved the water, some type of ocean, that was it for both of us,” O’Meara said. “Even when we were off work, we always took our vacation on the water.”

The two had worked as a team onboard several yachts, including M/Y JusMad , an 80-foot Ocean Alexander, M/Y Petrus , an 88-foot Leopard, and M/Y Southern Star , a 95-foot Burger, for more than 10 years cruising the United States, Bahamas, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. On vacations, the couple chartered a sailboat in the Virgin Islands, visited Belize, and in April spent time snorkeling in Maui.

Capt. O’Meara started his career on larger yachts in 2003 and worked on M/Y Arrowhead , a 112-foot Palmer Johnson, M/Y Savannah , a 118-foot Intermarine, and M/Y Big Zip , a 93-foot Cheoy Lee as mate.

He was born in Germany into a military family and moved several times in the United States including Texas, Virginia, and North Carolina. Highlights of his youth were the family’s boats, trips to the beach and sailing camp, said his wife. The two met in 1999, in Raleigh, North Carolina, near where he attended Louisburg College. They began dating in 2003.

“He told one of his best friends, ‘If I’m ever going to marry anyone, I’ll marry Katie’,” she said.

One of Capt. O’Meara’s relatives let him do a boat delivery to the Virgin Islands and it was there he lived on board a sailboat and learned about the yacht industry through yacht crew working in St. Thomas.

“When we hooked up, he was coming to Fort Lauderdale to do yachting, he had gotten a job on Petrus ,” O’Meara said. That was when she left her work in accounting to start as a yachtie herself.

“I’m fortunate he dragged me into it,” she said. “People in my town think I’m on a cruise ship.”

With the 1600-ton master oceans mariner’s license that he earned two years ago, Capt. O’Meara could have run larger boats, but the 112-foot Westport was his favorite, she said. The two had recently finished a refit on M/Y Pipe Dream .

“He wanted to run a 112, he liked the smaller, family feel,” she said.

As a United States resident, an autopsy was required by the Bahamian government, so the yacht stayed in the islands for a week awaiting results. O’Meara and the close crew are still on the job, even after the loss of their captain.

“The core group is still here now,” she said by phone in late July after a trip.

“I think he would like to be remembered for his smile and his laughter,” she said. “You could hear his laugh from a mile away. He loved his people, he was good to everyone, from contractors to friends. People would talk to him about their life, including me. He listened and would give advice and help. He cared about people.”

Friends do remember his smile, including a former yacht industry couple, Tehane and Andy Brady.

“Ryan always had a big smile on his face and a big heart,” Tehane Brady wrote in a message. “He was welcoming and friendly to everyone he met, well liked by everyone who was lucky enough to have him touch their lives, and he will be missed dearly.”

“He always had a smile on his face and was one of the most gracious guys I have met in the industry,” Andy Brady wrote. “From helping out with problem solving to opening up his house for holidays.”

Katie O’Meara said she is grateful to the yachting community for their support, including a group of 40 friends waiting to offer condolences at The Treasure Trove, a Fort Lauderdale beach bar, when she returned to Florida.

“We have an amazing group of friends,” she said.

And Capt. O’Meara fostered those relationships.

“He had Epic Adventure days for crew,” she said. “He said, ‘It’s your day off, but don’t sit on your bed’. The last epic adventure was to St. Lucia on an all-terrain vehicles through woods. He made memories.”

DIESEL FUEL SYSTEM

Total capacity: Approx. 9,965 gallons (US) in 5 tanks. Fill locations are on the port and starboard aft Main Deckhouse sides. Fill/transfer system includes a centrifuge, pumps, meter, and distribution manifold. Diesel engines draw from the day tank.

Engines and Generators are fueled via priming pumps and filters. Fuel is transferred to and from the day tank via fuel transfer pumps. Fuel is also transferred by virtue of the work of the centrifuge. Tank levels are monitored by an electronic sensor, with high/low-level alarms, and displayed on a vessel monitoring system display. Fuel tanks ventilate thru a ‖vent tank, which is monitored for overflow from tank are welded aluminum. Inspection ports are manufactured by Freeman Marine or equal.

Spare oil for the Main and generator engines can be carried onboard. Tanks for fresh and spent oil are mounted in the Engine Room. The new oil tank is replenished through an oil fill on top of the tank. The refuse oil is offloaded with quick-connect

hose at the stern. Two air-powered diaphragm pumps are used to transfer to/from locations via hose reels.

WASTEWATER SYSTEM

Black Water (toilets) is routed to the Black Water tank prior to emptying via shoreside pump out. When permitted, black water can be treated by the onboard Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) for overboard evacuation or the tank contents can be delivered directly overboard. The dockside pump-out connection is located on the swim platform. Gray Water (sinks, showers, etc.) is sent directly overboard or when required, routed to the black water tank. Tanks are vented at the boot stripe, carry level alarms, and are monitored on the Vessel Monitoring System

FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

The interior of the ship is protected by sprinklers that draw from the ship's freshwater supply. In the event, the water supply is depleted, and without interruption, the system would revert to seawater use. The Engine Room is protected by a gas smothering FM200 system

Sprinkler System: The system is pre-charged and automatic. The piping is copper/nickel tube with Seapress (Viega) or equal, crimp fittings. Water delivery is by two pumps; operating individually or in tandem, depending on demand. A small pressure tank maintains the standby pressure in the system. Control panels are located in the Engine Room and a mimic display in the Pilothouse

ENGINE ROOM FIRE SYSTEM

Operated manually, the FM 200 Fire protection system provides Engine Room fire protection. Activation (with a 34-second delay and alarm) includes the discharge of gas (fluoro propane) and the automatic shutdown of fuel pumps, intake fans, and exhaust dampers. The Engine Room and ventilation ducts are insulated against thermal conductivity; meeting the A30 rating and also providing effective sound damping Insulation: The bulkheads and duct work leading to the Engine Room are lined with a thermal barrier of insulation

HVAC SYSTEMS AIR CONDITIONING

The interior temperature of the vessel is maintained by a 30-ton capacity seawater-cooled HVAC system. Air handlers of various BTU ratings are mounted behind cabinets and bulkheads throughout the vessel and are fitted with electric heating

elements for autonomous heating for all accommodation, crew, and guest spaces.

The HVAC system also provides fresh air makeup to create a ventilated atmosphere with strategically placed heating units

MOORING & ANCHORING

Anchoring /docking is accomplished with bitts, hawse eyes, capstans and winches. The fore deck has two hawse eyes per side, two bitts per side and a pair of mooring winches incorporated with the anchor windlasses. The side decks and Aft Deck have two hawse eyes per side with two bitts on each side. The two Aft Deck mooring capstans and bitts at the Swim Step with the proper use of the anchors are an asset in med-style mooring

The Yacht Accommodations

“Pipe Dreams” accommodates 8 Owners and Guests in Four Staterooms. The crew area accommodates up to 5 crew in 3 cabins. The Master Stateroom is amidship with a King Berth and His and Her bathrooms divided by a Shower and separate shower. The VIP Stateroom is forward with queen berth and private bath. There are 2 Guest Staterooms, a queen berth in the Port Stateroom and Twin Berths in the Starboard Stateroom. Each staterooms has a private bath. Vessel may be boarded via port or starboard access doors or large glass doors leading from the Aft Deck into the Salon. Forward of the salon to starboard is a convenient Day Head with elegant Carrera Marble stone. Further forward are stairs leading up to the Pilothouse. Continuing forward to starboard is the spacious Country Kitchen with full chef amenities as well as a large u-shaped dining area forward. The VIP stateroom is below deck and accessed forward of the galley. The Master and Guest Staterooms are below deck and accessed via staircase forward of the salon to port.

The 130 foot tri-deck Westport motor yacht PIPE DREAM has been designed to offer the very best of the good life at sea. Built at the pedigreed Westport Shipyard in Port Angeles, Washington, motoryacht PIPE DREAM offers accommodations for up to 10 guests on 5 staterooms. Built-in stabilizers guarantee a smooth ride and maximum comfort at anchor, and the water toy inventory and onboard amenities present charter guests with dozens of recreational and entertainment options.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Master Stateroom: located on the man deck, and featuring a centerline king bed facing aft, with two nightstands, dresser, mirrored vanity, and walk-in closets (his and hers). The ensuite bathroom features a private head and bidet locker, a shower, and twin sinks. Other amenities include a private office area with desk, and entertainment center with 42” LCD TV, and Blu-Ray, DVD/CD player, iPod dock, and surround sound audio/visual components.

Four guests cabins are situated below deck –

King Stateroom (1): Aft lower deck to Port: Centerline king bed with two night stands, dresser, and closet. The en-suite features a head and bidet, twin sinks and a shower. The entertainment center has a 32” LCD TV, Blu-Ray, DVD/CD player, iPod dock, and surround sound.
King Stateroom (2): Aft lower deck to Starboard: Centerline king bed with two night stands, dresser, and closet. The en-suite features a head and bidet, twin sinks and a shower. The entertainment center has a 32” LCD TV, Blu-Ray, DVD/CD player, iPod dock, and surround sound.
Twin Guest Stateroom (1): Forward lower deck to Port: Two single beds with night stand, dresser, and closet. The ensuite features a head, sink and a shower. The entertainment center has a 26” LCD TV, Blu-Ray, DVD/CD player, iPod dock, and surround sound.
Twin Guest Stateroom (2): Forward lower deck to Starboard: two single beds with night stand, dresser, closet. The ensuite features a head, sink and a shower. The entertainment center has a 26” LCD TV, Blu-Ray, DVD/CD player, iPod dock, and surround sound.

DECK EXTERIOR FEATURES

The yachting lifestyle is defined by life all’aperto, and the decks of this luxury yacht charter vessel will not disappoint. There are numerous areas for socializing as well as quiet repose.

Main Aft Deck: There is a 42” LCD TV above the bar and within view of the 10-person dining table. The area includes bench seating and two cocktail tables. Wind doors are open or closed, for maximum guest comfort while dining.
Swim Platform: the aft swim platform is accessible via two stairwells (port and starboard) from the main aft deck. This is the perfect place to board watertoys, or simply sit and dangle legs and toes in the sea.
Bow: Walk-around decks lead to the forward bow area, where two chaise lounges await sun-worshippers.
Sundeck: This is the daytime party deck. It is a great, large open deck with plenty of space for socializing. There is a Jacuzzi tub forward. It has a large sun pad around it. A dining table seats 10. It has full shade. There is also a 42” outdoor LCD TV with iPod dock, 3 chaise lounges, and a full wet bar.

INTERIOR FEATURES

Main Salon: When it’s time to come inside, a warm-toned salon awaits. Guests will experience earthy tones in leather, and fine fabrics. Wood trim of sapele and mahogany compliment this space with seating available in the lounge area to port, and a game table to starboard. Forward is a formal dining area, and a convenient day head is located forward of the main atrium.
Skylounge: Ideal for an evening entertainment area, the lounge features a fireplace, sofa and a 55” HD TV, with Blu-Ray, DVD/CD player, iPod dock, and surround sound. A small desk on the port (left) side doubles as a gaming table or a place to set up a laptop to check emails and stay in touch with the family or office. There is a second table for games as well, along with a wet bar, and day head.
Bridge Deck Aft: This is a perfect alfresco lounge area. It offers shaded seating, BBQ, wet bar, and a 42” LCD outdoor TV with an iPod dock.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Pipe Dreams benefits from some excellent features to improve your charter including Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to stay connected at all times, should you wish. Guests will experience complete comfort while chartering thanks to air conditioning.

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 18 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 24 knots with a range of up to 300 nautical miles from her 8,137 litre fuel tanks at 17 knots.

Pipe Dreams knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with a selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. Guests can feel the wind in their hair and jump the waves on one of the two Yamaha WaveRunners. Also there are towable toys offering fun and adventure. Additionally, there are two SEABOBs, that allow you to skim along the surface or steer under the crystal water and see a variety of aquatic sea life. If that isn't enough Pipe Dreams also features kayaks, fishing equipment, paddleboards, scooters and snorkelling equipment. Pipe Dream is a 2000 40' Transpacific Marine Eagle trawler in nice condition. She offers a single Cummins 220 HP main engine, Westebeke 7.6 kW generator, C-Marine bow and stern thrusters, solar panels, flybridge and pilothouse helms and a stateroom forward with a queen size berth and ensuite head with an enclosed shower. Pipe Dream has been based in fresh water for the past five years and is presently docked under cover. Pipe Dream is a Great Loop veteran.

40' eagle vessel walkthrough.

From the stainless steel & teak swimplatform, you enter the hardtop covered aftdeck via the transom gate and find a stainless steel & teak ladder to the hardtop covered flybridge, one molded-in step to each side deck and a hatch and door to the salon. Once inside the salon, you will find a benchseat starboard aft, refrigerator and washer/dryer in a cabinet starboard forward, seating with a double pedestal table to port and galley port forward. Walk forward and step up the companionway to the pilothouse to find a side deck access door on each side, helm starboard forward, fold-up helm seat starboard aft and L-shaped seating with a double pedestal table aft. The stateroom companionway is port forward. Step down and walk forward to find the head and enclosed shower to starboard, storage locker to port and the stateroom forward with an island queen size berth and direct access to the head. Engine room access is via pilothouse sole hatches and hinged companionway stairs aft.

The headroom in the salon is 6'4", 6'10" in the pilothouse, 6'7" in the master stateroom, 6'3" in the shower, 6'5" on the flybridge and 6'4" on the aftdeck. The master stateroom berth is 7' long.

The height from the waterline to the top of the mast is 16'10" and is only 12'10" with the mast removed.

Pipe Dream offers a stateroom forward with an island queen size berth and ensuite head with enclosed shower. The salon has a single size benchseat/berth to starboard and the port seating converts into a queen size berth. The pilothouse seating converts into a single size berth also.

The salon offers seating/berth with storage and a double pedestal table to port, benchseat/berth with storage to starboard, opening side and aft windows, teak & holly sole, engine room access and a door and hatch to the aftdeck. The upholstery was updated in 2023.

Curtis Stokes was born in Lewes, Delaware and grew up in nearby Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and St. Michaels, MD until he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1992. Curtis grew up on the water and around boats through many years of fishing, sailing and hunting up and down the East Coast of the U.S. and The Bahamas.

While attending Washington College, in Chestertown, Maryland, Curtis decided to obtain his real estate license and joined his father’s real estate firm, Anderson-Stokes Realtors. Curtis became president of the firm after his father’s death and led the company through its expansion to 20 offices and expanded the publicly traded company into insurance, advertising and development. The company was sold in 1991 and Curtis decided to pursue his real love of the water and made yachting his career.

Curtis’ yachting career includes everything from a 75’ Trumpy to a 180’ Feadship, 2½ circumnavigations and a half dozen Atlantic Ocean crossings. He has been associated with and enjoyed worldwide cruising on such well known vessels as EXCELLENCE, FIFFANELLA, OUR TOY, MOECCA, RENEGADE, KISSES and HUNTRESS. Curtis also gained experience as sales manager at Hatteras Yachts, in New Bern, NC, where he helped develop and sell new models and train and coordinate his dealer network.

Curtis then spent six years as a very successful yacht sales broker with The Sacks Group Yachting Professionals, Inc. Curtis was consistently a top producer at the firm. Curtis decided to form his own yacht sales and charter firm September 1, 2009, which took off on a very successful start, even in a recession! Curtis has grown the company to multiple offices and 50 full time sales associates located around the US; and he has sold virtually every type and size of yacht and boat possible.

Curtis held a USCG 3000 ton All Oceans Master license, UK MCA Class IV Master certificate, Cayman Islands Master certificate and a PADI Divemaster certificate. He is also a former Emergency Medical Technician, firefighter and CPR instructor.

Curtis is an active member of the America’s Great Loop Cruiser Association (AGLCA), Superyacht Society, United States Superyacht Association, Marine Trawler Owner Association (MTOA), DeFever Cruiser Club, Seven Seas Cruising Association, Billfish Foundation, International Gamefish Association and Ducks Unlimited.

Trump Shares Video Featuring Image of a Hog-Tied Biden

The social media post reflects the increasingly violent and personal attacks that Donald J. Trump has employed during the presidential campaign.

Former President Donald J. Trump posted a video on Friday to his social media website that features an image of President Biden with his hands and feet tied together.

Mr. Trump posted the video to Truth Social early Friday afternoon with a line that said it was filmed on Long Island on Thursday, when Mr. Trump attended the wake of a slain New York City police officer in Massapequa Park, N.Y. The video shows two moving trucks decorated with flags and decals supporting Mr. Trump. The tailgate of the second vehicle features the image of Mr. Biden.

Macabre imagery targeting Mr. Trump’s perceived enemies frequently circulates online among right-wing provocateurs and pro-Trump groups, and in some cases has been featured at conservative conferences . Photos of trucks featuring similar images of Mr. Biden tied up have been shared across social media, and online vendors sell vehicle stickers with the image.

Mr. Trump’s promotion of the video featuring the image reflects the increasingly caustic and personal attacks that he has directed against Mr. Biden — for example, in a speech this month he said that “everything Joe Biden touches turns to” filth, though he used an expletive — and it extends a record in which the former president features violent imagery on his social media accounts.

“Trump is regularly inciting political violence, and it’s time people take him seriously — just ask the Capitol Police officers who were attacked protecting our democracy on Jan. 6,” said Michael Tyler, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, referring to a pro-Trump mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, said “that picture was on the back of a pickup truck that was traveling down the highway,” adding that “Democrats and crazed lunatics have not only called for despicable violence against President Trump and his family, they are actually weaponizing the justice system against him.”

The video was still on Mr. Trump’s Truth Social page as of late Friday evening.

The Trump campaign has repeatedly cited Democratic statements from years past to defend Mr. Trump’s rhetoric. Mr. Cheung on Friday pointed to a statement by Mr. Biden in 2018 in which he said, referring to Mr. Trump, “If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.” Mr. Biden was responding to comments that Mr. Trump had made about women on a tape linked to the show “Access Hollywood.”

Mr. Trump has previously posted doctored photos and videos depicting him physically attacking political opponents, focusing particularly on Mr. Biden in the last year. The former president has, for example, repeatedly shared videos depicting him hitting Mr. Biden with golf balls . Mr. Trump also posted a photo last year of him holding a baseball bat next to Alvin L. Bragg , the Manhattan district attorney, who is prosecuting Mr. Trump in connection to a hush money payment made to a porn star during the 2016 campaign.

Mr. Trump has also used increasingly authoritarian language on the campaign trail, repeatedly saying that migrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” and describing his political opponents in a Veterans Day speech last year as “vermin” who needed to be “rooted out.”

This month, Mr. Trump said that some migrants were “not people” and, amid a discussion of the auto industry, that the country would face a “blood bath” if he lost the election. A few days later, he attacked Jewish Democrats in a radio interview, saying that Jews who vote for Democrats hate their religion and Israel .
