Presentation Skills: A short guide

Introduction, planning a presentation, writing a presentation, delivering presentations, five top tips, further references on presentation skills.

During your time at university, you will probably be asked to give an oral presentation to your peers, whether as part of an assessment for a module, as a group presentation in a seminar, or during an interview. Presentations require as much thought, planning and research as written essays, even though their purpose, style and audience are often different. For many students, delivering a presentation can be a nerve-wracking experience, but it does not have to be! Here are some tips to help you develop your presentations and enjoy doing them.

Five key questions to ask yourself:

• What are your presentation’s objectives?
• Who is your audience?
• What content are you going to include?
• How much time do you have?
• What visual aids will you use? 

In each case, your answer should reflect the needs of your audience, plus any assessment criteria.

• Script vs notes: always write notes eg, on index cards. Never rely on writing out the whole presentation and simply reading it.
• Plan out the presentation to get a smooth flow of ideas.
• Think extra-hard about an engaging introduction and memorable conclusion.

Using technology

• Learn how to use PowerPoint or a similar presentation tool, but make sure your slides are accessible and helpful. For example, make sure your font size is large enough to be readable and there is a strong enough contrast between text and bakground
• Use pictures and diagrams effectively! Keep your images simple. Avoid unnecessary clutter or distracting transitions.
• Be aware of copyright for images. Clearly label graphs and tables. 
• Make sure you have a back-up plan in case technology fails.
• Practise, practise, and practise! It’s that simple. Why not ask a friend to be your audience so you can get some feedback?
• Be enthusiastic. If you appear passionate and interested in your topic, your audience will be too.
• Body language and posture. Stand with a relaxed but confident posture to deliver your presentation. Smile and make eye contact with your audience, and try not to pace or fidget.
• Your voice is your best tool! Practice will help you learn to speak clearly and project.
• Watch your pace. Many students lose marks for nervously racing through their presentation. This hinders understanding. Pause now and again to drink some water and slow yourself down.

Question and answer session 

• Be prepared. Think through in advance what you might be asked.
• How do you respond? Practise some responses. On the day, make sure you listen carefully and give yourself a moment to consider your answer.
• Do not make up the answer if you’re unsure! Be honest, and try a phrase such as ‘that’s an interesting question that had not occurred to me.’

Overcoming nerves

• Presentation nerves can be positive! To do the best possible presentation, you need some energy, some ‘edge’. Totally nerveless performances can be flat.
• Preparation is key! If you have prepared an interesting presentation with a clear structure and lots of examples, your anxiety will decrease.
• Think positively. Your lecturer, seminar tutor and your peers all want you to do well. Afterwards, you will feel great!
• Relaxation techniques. Everybody has their own way of controlling and channelling nerves. See the readings on the back page for examples of relaxation techniques.
• Let your interest and enthusiasm shine through.
• A STRONG introduction and conclusion will focus your audience.
• Practise your presentation and watch your timing.
• Use PowerPoint and other visual resources, but only if they add something.
• Aim to enjoy the experience!

Designing and presenting your poster at conferences

This workshop will help you maximise the opportunity to communicate your research in a highly visual way using a poster. It will help you understand the nature of a poster session (for example, at a conference), how to create visual impact, and how to use PowerPoint in this context.

Presentation at the University of Birmingham

Dic explores collaborative frontiers with university of birmingham.

DIC recently engaged in an enriching visit to the School of Geography, Earth, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham (UoB). The highlight of this visit was a productive meeting with Professor Eugenia (Éva) Valsami-Jones , Chair in Environmental Nanoscience.

DIC's delegation had the honor of presenting to Professor Valsami-Jones's distinguished group, shedding light on the innovative solutions within the company's portfolio. The presentation delved into the transformative potential of DIC's projects, focusing on advancements in advanced materials and sustainable practices.

We had constructive discussions that centered on the prospect of forging collaborations in European research projects. The meeting served as a forum to explore shared interests and synergies between DIC's initiatives and Professor Valsami-Jones's group's expertise in environmental nanoscience.

Commenting on the meeting, Dr. Mohamed Eldessouki, Director of DIC, expressed enthusiasm about the potential collaboration, saying, "Our discussion with Professor Valsami-Jones was incredibly insightful. Tuskegee students design Birmingham stadium through NFL partnership

Tuskegee University students from different majors worked together to complete a reimagined design of Legion Field Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama. The project is part of a partnership with the NFL and the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science that was announced last fall .

The students participated in this multi-disciplinary initiative that created opportunities for students to focus on design, leadership and collaboration. The students designed the stadium with a focus on the fan and player experience, architectural design, engineering and construction. Students worked to complete the project throughout the semester and their experience culminated in a presentation of their proposed plan at the NFL league office in New York with league executives and members of the American Institute of Architects.

The students presented a proposal of renovations to Legion Field Stadium that included 65,000 seats, 100 luxury suites, a retractable roof, retractable fields and seats to accommodate soccer, and track and field events. The stadium is designed with solar panels, a modern water harvesting and cooling systems, a community village and garden for high end concessions contributing to the stadium’s sustainability. A hotel has been incorporated in the design as a destination location.  This unique NFL pilot program is a multi-disciplinary initiative creating opportunities for students across several schools and a part of the league’s larger goal to engage with HBCU campuses through its Campus Connection program.

“This is exactly the kind of experience we want our students to enjoy,” said President Charlotte P. Morris. “Giving them real-world experience in an industry they are working to join, gives them invaluable insight into what they should expect and the success they can ultimately accomplish.”

Professor Roderick Fluker, Associate professor of the School of Architecture and Construction Science and a faculty advisor, was impressed with how well the students worked together.

“We were really impressed with the knowledge and professionalism they exhibited throughout the process and certainly the final results,” he said. “Through the design process the team was able to research and implement stadium design innovations while also being sensitive to an urban neighborhood context.”

In addition to architecture, the disciplines they represent included construction science, mechanical engineering, sales and marketing, and supply chain management. 

Jordan Pettway, a senior Sales and Marketing major from Mobile, appreciated the exposure.

“The NFL Case Study opened my eyes in so many ways,” she said. “I was able to work alongside the team learning about different aspects of their fields of study. The stadium design came to life piece by piece and I honestly could not believe my eyes when I saw what we created together in the end. This is an experience I’ll never forget.”

Senior Architecture major Chanse Huff agrees. “This project has broadened our perspectives far beyond our individual majors. My greatest takeaway is the power of true teamwork.”

Walter P. Cooper Sr., who leads the university career center, said interacting with NFL leaders gave the students an experience that exceeded expectations. “Students engaged with NFL representatives working in a variety of capacities affording each student invaluable exposure to various career pathways within the NFL. We look forward to growing this partnership to expand to other special projects with the NFL.”

The objective of the NFL’s HBCU Campus Connection program is to form relationships with students year-round through collaborative initiatives including lectures, speaking opportunities, case studies and various events promoting career development. Since 2018, the program has reached over 2,000 students.

 “We are proud of the innovation and creativity the students displayed while suggesting solutions to a real issue within the NFL,” said NFL Senior Vice President of Football Operations Arthur McAfee III. “Through the Campus Connection program and our partnership with Tuskegee, the NFL’s commitment to HBCU’s extends beyond the field by driving awareness around career opportunities and providing access to the business of sports.”

Dengue fever is the most prevalent mosquito-borne disease globally and poses a threat to half of the world's population. There has been a dramatic rise in cases over recent years, with cases in the Americas reaching more than three million cases in 2023. Since January 2024, Brazil has reported more than 3.5 million cases, marking the largest dengue outbreak on record.

The paper, co-authored by Dr Livia Menezes from the University of Birmingham and Dr Martin Foureaux Koppensteiner from the University of Surrey, has been published in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics.

This paper sets out robust research which shows that being infected with dengue fever, even with a mild case, whilst pregnant can have a significant impact on the health of the child once born. Dr Livia Menezes, Birmingham Business School

The study looks at a large data set of dengue fever infections in expectant mothers from Minas Gerais, Brazil, and the resulting birth outcomes. It finds that babies born to women who were infected with dengue fever during their pregnancy had lower birth weights, increasing the risk of newborns being classed as having a very and extremely low birth weight by 67% and 133%, respectively.

Dr Livia Menezes, Assistant Professor in Economics at the University of Birmingham and co-author of the study said: “Even though dengue is a very common mosquito-borne disease, there has not been much attention given to the impact it has on birth outcomes and as a result, what can be done to improve them and protect pregnant women and their children.

“This paper sets out robust research which shows that being infected with dengue fever, even with a mild case, whilst pregnant can have a significant impact on the health of the child once born. These birth outcomes can even have longer-term impacts, for example, previous research has shown that low birth weight can negatively affect socio-economic outcomes and health in adulthood.”

The researchers also found that children whose mothers were infected with dengue fever whilst pregnant had a 27% increased risk of being hospitalised from birth to age three. The highest risk of hospitalisation for these children comes in their second year of life, where there is a 76% increase.

Dr Martin Foureaux Koppensteiner, Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Surrey said: “These negative birth outcomes are not only limited to the health of individual children and mothers, but they have a much wider impact for communities where dengue fever is common. Hospitalisations and ongoing health issues resulting from maternal infections all have a cost, and one that could be avoided, or at least minimised with increased awareness and improved policy.

“We strongly suggest that dengue fever should be considered alongside the TORCH infections to manage and avoid when pregnant, which currently include Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, HIV, syphilis, chicken pox, Zika, and influenza among others."

The study also highlights the possible consequences of climate change expanding the reach of dengue fever. While the disease has historically been limited to tropical and subtropical regions, it now has an established presence in over 120 countries. Aedes mosquitoes, which carry and transmit dengue, have found breeding grounds in countries previously unaffected, including Croatia, France, Portugal, and the southern states of the USA.

Dr Menezes concludes: “As the planet heats, we can expect to see dengue fever become even more common in countries that have previously not had high infection rates. This is a problem that needs to be taken seriously, and quickly.

“Policy changes and things like vector control, updated risk communication with key groups and vaccine adoption can all reduce the risk of pregnant women being infected with dengue. Action needs to be taken by governments and health organisations to provide better protection for pregnant women and their children.”

The continuous casting of steel in a section continuous caster with a three-plate sliding gate placed in the tundish is considered. The main causes of casting-channel clogging in casting are shown to be related to the displacement of the central plate with respect to the two other plates and to high heat removal through the tundish nozzle walls. The results obtained are used to find the rational displacement of the central plate and to correct the casting channel diameter.
