In both the corporate and educational world, giving presentations is an important part of life. Anything that can help your presentation go smoothly can have a positive effect on your career. Luckily, there’s plenty of technology out there that can help you out in this area. Digital projectors are clearer and easier to see than the models we had available only a few short years ago, and most can now integrate with remote controllers.

Your typical remote controller is nothing more than a button that allows you to advance to the next slide. But there are a few models out there that offer much more control than this. You can start and stop multimedia, go back to a previous slide, or even use a laser pointer to draw attention to specific parts of your presentation. Today, we’re going to be taking a look at the three best presentation remotes on the market.

Canon PR10-G Wireless Presentation Remote

Whether you’re looking for the latest photo gear, a high-quality printer, or powerful business technology, Canon is an excellent choice. They’ve been manufacturing presentation remotes for quite some time now, but the PR10-G is the latest in modern presentation technology.

Canon PR10-G

The Canon PR10-G Wireless Presentation Remote is easy to hold in the hand, but built to withstand a lot of use and abuse. It’s made from injection molded plastic, tastefully designed with a lightly textured pattern that makes it both resistant to scratches and easy to hold. Right where your thumb rests are the easy to push buttons. They use rubber dome actuators that provide a firmer press but won’t wear out with time. At the top you’ve got a handy LCD display. This screen can be used for a variety of reasons. Most people will use it for timing your presentations.

I’m sure we all know how important this is. When rehearsing, it’s easy to set a timeline and stick to it. But once you get in front of people, you find that you’re either spending too much time on one topic, or rushing through the presentation quicker than you expected. With the timer, you’ll be able to find out where you are at with just a quick glance at the face of the display. You can also use the timer to keep track of where you are at in your presentation if you’ve integrated it with video or audio media.

Canon PR10-G

Perhaps the most important feature of any wireless presenter is the control layout. This is one of the many areas where the Canon model really excels. At the top, you’ve got the large button that turns the laser pointer on or off. A partial press will keep the light on as long as it’s held down. But if you depress it all the way, the laser will stay on until pressed a second time.

Below that you’ve got the typical forward and backwards buttons. Below each of those, there are two unique buttons you might not have seen before. The first is the “expand” button. This can be used with both PowerPoint or Keynote to blow up an image, video, or diagram to full size. Press it again to return to the standard size. On the right, you’ve got the start / stop button that can trigger playback of multimedia.

Canon PR10-G

Compatibility

The Canon PR10-G is designed to work straight out of the box with Apple’s Keynote or Microsoft’s PowerPoint. You won’t need to go through any complicated setup procedure, just unpack it and start using it.

The biggest issue with compatibility is range. Presentation remotes often have to choose between standard Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi direct. Bluetooth is the most compatible of all standards, but suffers from short range. Wi-Fi direct works only with modern devices, but supports a longer range. Canon found a creative solution for this problem. Their remote comes bundled with a high-powered Bluetooth transceiver that plugs into the USB port on any Mac or Windows computer. This allows them to use a higher-powered setting that isn’t supported by all devices. The end result is a huge 100-foot range, allowing the remote to be used in even the largest presentation rooms.

Even without drivers, the presentation remote can be used with any Windows computer from Vista SP2 and up. This means that Windows 7, 8, and 10 all work out of the box. Mac OS 10.5 and up are supported, meaning that the remote will work with any Intel based Mac released in the last 11 years.

Canon PR10-G

The stand out feature of this remote is the powerful green laser. This laser pointer might look a little different from the standard red ones, but it’s up to 8 times brighter than the red wavelength. This means that even in the brightest most well-illuminated room, you’ll have no problem drawing attention to the most important parts of your presentation.

Another great feature of canons presentation remote is the vibration feature. You can easily set notifications at various points throughout your presentations to help keep you on track. It will automatically vibrate one, five, or ten minutes before the end to remind you to wrap things up. You can also set the timer to vibrate at any other point, as needed.

Kensington Wireless Presenter

If the name rings a bell, it’s because Kensington is known primarily for their high-quality laptop security devices. The Kensington lock is generally accepted as being one of the locks on the market. Their remote presenter goes hand in hand with these locks, as you’ll often want to keep your notebook safe while you give your presentation.

Kensington Wireless Presenter

The incredibly compact Kensington Wireless Presenter is designed to be simple and easy to use. While it’s not the most attractive of the bunch, you might be surprised to learn that it’s actually very comfortable to hold in the hand. Its strong curves fit with the curves of your hand, meaning that you’re not going to get uncomfortable even when you’re using it for long periods of time. Aside from the four buttons on the face, there isn’t really a whole lot of extras on this presentation remote. But the one thing we did really like was the USB port on the bottom. This can be used to charge the remote, but also provides a handy storage space for the USB receiver when not in use.

Kensington Wireless Presenter

The control scheme with this remote is simple, but still highly effective. The two buttons that you’ll use the most, the forward and backward buttons, are located on either side of the main section. On the opposite orientation, you’ve got the play and stop buttons. The main difference between this button and some of the more advanced models is that each one serves a single purpose.

Kensington Wireless Presenter

For example, Canon combined the play and stop buttons. If your media is currently playing, then the button will stop it, and vice versa. But this can create confusion in presentations where there are multiple media types, or if you change slides without stopping the previous media. To avoid any awkward mistakes, many presenters will prefer this simple control scheme.

Kensington Wireless Presenter

The Kensington Wireless Presenter decided to go for a high bandwidth method of communication to offer solid range without dropouts. Running on the 2.4 Ghz frequency, it requires that a USB dongle be used with your computer. This transceiver can be used with Windows 7, 8, and 10 PCs. It can also work with OSX systems from 10.6 and up. It works with Microsoft PowerPoint out of the box, but the drivers allow you to map the buttons to the keyboard. With a few quick clicks, you can set it up to control any presentation software you like.

Logitech R800 Professional Presenter

We’ve reviewed Logitech’s accessories many times before, and not once have we come across one that disappoints us. While their professional wireless presenter is much larger than some, the impressive range of included features makes this presenter just as powerful as it is large.

Logitech Professional Presenter R800

The Logitech R800 Professional Presenter is ergonomically designed to be comfortable to hold in the hand, and keeps all of your most important features easily accessible from the face. But aside from the standard controls, you’ve got access to a powerful LCD display on the face that performs much of the same features as the Canon model. It can help you keep track of how long you’ve bene presenting for, how long you’ve spent on a particular slide, or show you a countdown to a specific time.

Logitech Professional Presenter R800

The controls are quite similar to those on the Canon. You’ve got the forward and backward buttons for navigating between slides, the full screen button for expanding visual aids, and the play button to start and stop embedded media. But the unique feature on this remote is the programmable button located just below the display. You can configure this button to set any particular element you like, giving you a little more control over your presentation.

Logitech Professional Presenter R800

This wireless remote presenter is compatible with a wide range of Windows PCs, starting from Windows 7 and going up to the latest release of Windows 10. It uses the same wireless technology as the Cannon, requiring a dongle but giving you up to 100 ft (30 meters) of range.

Logitech Professional Presenter R800

The Logitech R800 Professional Presenter has a couple of features we’ve seen before, but are happy to see included. It’s got the timed vibration feature, which we found to be a little easier to use than the Canon model. The timer is set from the included features, and gives you a ton of control over how and when the timer goes off. You can set different types of vibrations for different alarms. For example, short pulses can signify an impending time limit, or long ones can remind you to move on to the next slide.

Another great feature of this remote is the same high powered green laser pointer we liked so much. Once you use such a bright pointer it’s unlikely that you’ll want to go back to the basic model.

Which Wireless Remote Presenter is Right for Me?

Not sure which one is right for your business? For most users, we’re recommend the Canon PR10-G . This remote is fully compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems, and gives you plentiful controls and a powerful laser.

You might also want to consider the Logitech R800 Professional Presenter . This model adds a powerful timing system that lets you make the most of the built-in vibration feature.

Finally, there will be a few people who just need something simple for their presentations. In this case, you can’t go wrong with the Kensington Wireless Presenter . It’s affordable, easy to use, and reliable. If this is all you need, there is no sense is spending money on a high-end model.

2 thoughts on “Guide to the Best Wireless Presenters (Presentation Remotes) for 2023”

I am seeking a presenter which is compatible with Corel software on a PC running Windows 10. I will appreciate any comments or suggestions. Thank you.

Thank you for the great reviews. I am currently using a Kensington Presenter Pro that has been good for me for quite some time now. I like the size and the button layouts; the range is wonderful; and the green laser is plenty bright. That all said, the one thing that drives me mad is the clicking sounds of the buttons. How on earth did the design team feel this was okay. During a quiet part of a presentation when I’m not talking, but still advancing slides, this is completely distracting.

You did not happen to mention if any of these above have silent ‘soft touch’ buttons. I think the Canon might, but not sure. Can you please confirm which ones do and which ones don’t.

Thank you. Cheers! Kevin

Professionalism

Presentation remotes add an extra layer of professionalism to any presentation. They allow presenters to move freely while controlling their slides, which prevents them from having to stand awkwardly next to their computer the entire time. This helps presenters build a stronger connection with their audience and improves their ability to engage with the material.

Buying Guides

Before making a decision on which presentation remote to purchase, there are certain key features that need to be taken into consideration.

Compatibility

Compatibility is an essential factor to consider before buying presentation remotes because not all remotes are compatible with all devices. Some remotes are only compatible with certain operating systems or software, while others may have compatibility issues with older or newer versions of devices. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the presentation remote you choose is compatible with the device that you want to use it with, to avoid any inconvenience or potential technical issues during your presentation.

In addition, it is always advisable to test the compatibility of the remote before making a purchase. Many remotes have compatibility requirements that are not always apparent beforehand, and it is better to test the remote before buying to ensure that there are no technical issues during the presentation. Compatibility is an essential factor that ensures that your presentation runs smoothly, and it is important to consider it before buying a presentation remote.

Range is an important factor to consider when investing in a presentation remote. This is because the range will determine how far away you can be from your computer while still being able to control it. If you have a large conference room or need to present from a distance, a remote with a longer range will be necessary. Additionally, if you plan on moving around the room during your presentation, a remote with a longer range will allow you to maintain control from a distance.

Furthermore, considering the range can also affect the reliability and convenience of your presentation. A remote with a shorter range may not be responsive or consistent, causing interruptions and difficulties in your presentation. On the other hand, a remote with a longer range will provide greater flexibility, allowing you to seamlessly control your presentation from anywhere in the room. Overall, range is a crucial consideration when buying presentation remotes as it affects the functionality and success of your presentation.

Battery Life

Presentation remotes are an essential tool for professionals who frequently make presentations. The battery life is an essential factor to consider before buying a presentation remote as it determines the amount of time that the remote will be operational before it requires charging or replacement.

A presentation remote with a good battery life ensures that the presenter is free from the anxiety of an unexpected power failure during an important presentation. It also means that the remote can be used for an extended period, therefore, reducing the need for frequent charging or replacement of batteries. This not only saves on the cost of replacement batteries but also ensures that the presentation runs smoothly without interruptions. Hence, it is crucial to consider the battery life of a presentation remote before purchasing it, especially for those who make frequent and long presentations.

Ease of Use

Ease of Use is an important factor to consider before buying Presentation Remotes because these devices are used during an important such as a business meeting or a conference. If the remote is not user-friendly, the presenter might face difficulty navigating through the presentation, and a lot of time might be wasted in figuring out how to operate the device. Moreover, if the presenter is nervous and under pressure, the remote’s complicated operation can add to the stress levels. Therefore, it is important to buy a presentation remote that is intuitive and easy to use, so that the presenter can focus on delivering the content without any technical difficulties.

Another reason to consider the Ease of Use before purchasing Presentation Remotes is that the audience’s engagement largely depends on how the presenter delivers the content. If the presenter is continuously struggling with the remote, the audience might lose interest, and the message might not be as impactful as it should be. On the other hand, if the presenter is seen as confident and commanding, the audience is more likely to be interested and engaged. Therefore, a presentation remote that is easy to use and operate can significantly boost the presenter’s confidence and, in turn, make the presentation more effective.

Additional Features

Before buying a presentation remote, it is important to consider additional features that can enhance the overall experience and effectiveness of the presentation. These additional features can include things like laser pointers, timers, slide customization options, and compatibility with different presentation software. By considering these features, a presenter can ensure that they have all the tools they need to deliver a successful presentation and engage their audience effectively.

Furthermore, additional features like wireless connectivity options, extended battery life, and ergonomic design can also make all the difference in terms of ease of use and comfort. A good presentation remote should be reliable, easy to navigate, and equipped with features that help to enhance the presenter’s performance. Taking the time to consider these features before making a purchase can help to ensure that a presenter chooses the right tool for the job and delivers a presentation that is both engaging and effective.

Price is an important factor to consider when purchasing presentation remotes because it affects our budget and affordability. Buying a costly remote may not always be feasible, especially if we do not have a large budget. Additionally, we may find similar remote models with the same features at different prices, and it is wise to choose the cost-effective option without compromising on the quality and reliability of the remote.

Furthermore, it is essential to evaluate our requirements and use-case before investing in a presentation remote. If we only need a basic model for occasional use, we may not need a high-end remote with advanced features. In contrast, if we use the remote frequently, or our profession demands an extensive use of remote during presentations, we may opt for a slightly expensive remote with robust connectivity options, multi-device support, and customization options. Considering the price helps to make an informed decision and generate better value for our money.

Final Verdict

Affordable and functional, you really can’t go wrong with the Beboncool Wireless Presenter (view at Walmart ) and its built-in laser pointer. But if you’re someone who presents on a regular basis, it may be worth investing in the Canon PR10-G (vie at Amazon ) for its features. Its long-range and LCD screen that displays a timer will allow you to move freely and help you keep track of time.

What to Look for in Presentation Clickers

You don’t want to be in the middle of a presentation and have your clicker die out. A long battery life, the ability to recharge, and being able to check battery levels will help you avoid losing power or carrying extra batteries in your pocket.

If you plan to walk across a stage or work in a large room, you’ll want a presentation clicker that can move around with you and still perform well from longer distances (preferably, at least 100 feet). Of course, if you know that you’re just presenting in a conference room or classroom, a shorter range will be sufficient.

Compatibility

Many presentation clickers work on both Windows and Apple devices, but some may not. You’ll also want to investigate if the clicker is plug and play or if you need to download software to get it up and running. Simpler setups are always going to make life easier, especially if you will be using a variety of laptops and devices.

Do you want a built-in laser pointer? What about a built-in reminder to keep tabs on your timing? Would you prefer a few buttons or extra functions? These are some of the bells and whistles you may want to consider if you’re shopping for higher-end presentation clickers.

Table of Contents

Buying guide for best presentation remotes.

The digital revolution has left an indelible mark on the world of presentations. PowerPoint and similar software programs give us visual aids that become the focal points during lectures and conferences. Enter the presentation remote, a speaker’s solution to cutting the cord. With a presentation remote, a presenter is free to work the room instead of being cloistered behind a computer during key discussions.

Presentation remotes solve a logistic problem for speakers, especially in larger rooms and auditoriums. Wireless control is freeing, and with a laser pointer in hand, a presenter can speak from a distance while guiding the audience with a focal point. Whether you’re an educator or keynote speaker, investing in a presentation remote is a must. We examined the best presentation remotes to help you decide which one is on-point with your public speaking needs.

best presentation remote 2023

Key considerations

Battery type.

Presentation remotes are powered by either alkaline or rechargeable batteries. A remote that takes alkaline batteries will likely require one to four AAA batteries.

Presentation remotes with rechargeable batteries power up quickly and hold a charge for several hours. Keep in mind that these batteries aren’t removable or docked to an external device. You simply plug in the cord into an available USB hub .

If you’re leaning toward a remote that requires alkaline batteries but want the perks of a rechargeable remote, you could split the difference and invest in rechargeable batteries . They cost more than alkaline ones, but the investment pays off long-term with fewer battery purchases.

Consider the spaces where you’ll deliver presentations. Some remotes have very limited ranges of between 30 and 50 feet. These are better suited for classrooms and small conference rooms. For auditoriums and halls with a lot of square footage to cover, consider a presentation remote with a range between 100 and 300 feet.

USB receiver size

The USB receiver comes in a variety of sizes. Some are only millimeters in width; others are the size of a regular thumb drive. Many presentation remotes are designed to have the receiver pop into the handheld device itself. It usually clicks into place, so it’s secure during storage. Other USB receivers are completely separate pieces, safely kept in a case with the remote after use.

Compatibility

Some presentation remotes are designed to be compatible only with specific devices and software. Others boast blanket compatibility, citing compatibility with the oldest and newest technology in the presentation space. The latter is an attractive feature if you’re a traveling speaker who can’t always predict what will be in the room when you arrive.

best presentation remote 2023

Color doesn’t play a huge role in presentation remotes, although there are some models that go beyond the rudimentary black and gray. For the most part, they’re monochromatic with occasional color pops on buttons and logos. Color accents of silver, gray, and white are usually contrast colors to indicate where the buttons are and in some cases, what they do.

Laser pointer

The laser pointer is another standard feature. Unlike other buttons on the remote, this one has to stay pressed to beam in most models. This design element is also a safety feature, as lasers should be used with discretion; you wouldn’t want to accidentally shine it in someone’s eyes or in their line of vision. Laser colors are either red or green. While some say green is easier to see than red, laser color is a matter of preference.

The placement, design, and responsibilities of the buttons vary between models.

Some presentation remotes have a D-pad (directional pad), a recognizable four-way button seen on video game controllers and TV and DVD remotes. The D-pad will either be a single button that moves in different directions or a series of slightly spaced individual buttons. The left and right buttons most often control slide commands (for example, go back or move to the next slide). The up and down buttons take on different responsibilities depending on the model; they may control the blank screen command, scroll through a screen, or turn on the laser pointer.

Power switch

The power switch has the most thoughtful placement on presentation remotes. Since no one wants a presentation to come to a screeching halt with technical difficulties, it’s usually neatly tucked away in a place with the least amount of hand contact. For some models, it’s on the side; for others, it’s on the back.

Blank screen

The blank screen button varies quite a bit between models, but it generally remains in the same location. It’s either part of a D-pad setup or situated close to the D-pad as an independent button.

In some models, there is a separate button to initiate a connection between the remote and computer. Other models simply connect as soon as they’re turned on.

Presentation remote prices

Presentation remotes typically cost less than $100, so if it’s something you plan to use on a regular basis, the price is palatable.

On the low end, there are presentation remotes between $10 and $25. These tend to be made with lower-quality materials and components and may not be as reliable as their pricier counterparts. Between $25 and $90, you’ll find better-performing models with a focus on ergonomic design. Products in this range are also compatible with more devices and software. There are some presentation remotes over the $90 mark, and these integrate other technology into their design. For example, the remote may also serve as a mouse , or it might have programmable functions.

best presentation remote 2023

  • Remember your USB receiver. Once your presentation concludes, be sure to remove the USB receiver from the computer right away. Set a timer on your watch or phone as a reminder to take it before you leave the room.
  • Double-check your presentation. Make sure there are no issues between your presentation remote and your computer. Arrive early to the lecture hall or conference room to leave time for setup.
  • Keep your presentation remote in a case. If it didn’t come with a case, invest in a compact, padded one to keep the remote protected inside your bag or briefcase .
  • Clean your hands before use. Use your presentation remote with clean hands to keep dirt away from accumulating between buttons. Hand sanitizer can remove excess residue in a pinch if you don’t have time to wash your hands.
  • Keep spare batteries on hand . Be prepared with an extra set of batteries in your bag. While many people have spare phone chargers, sometimes it’s harder to locate batteries when you need them right away.

Other products we considered

Because so many models of presentation remotes share the same features — and even similar shapes and designs — we took a special look at some remotes outside the norm. The DinoFire Wireless Finger Ring USB PowerPoint Presentation Clicker breaks from the handheld tradition and wraps itself conveniently around your pointer finger. It’s rechargeable, taking only one hour to charge and lasting for seven days. Periods of low activity kick off its sleep mode, so this futuristic presentation remote-ring is a top battery-saving and space-saving option.

For time-conscious speakers, the Doosl Wireless Presenter Laser Pointer Green PowerPointer Clicker Remote LCD Display with Timer is essential. This model has a green LCD display that is programmable with vibrating alerts to help you keep time. It has a 300-foot wireless range thanks to a top-grade microchip, so it’s an ideal pick for speakers who like to move around in a large auditorium.

best presentation remote 2023

Q. My presentation has moving text and images on each slide. Can I control those features with my presentation remote? A. It depends less on the remote and more on how you design your presentation. For example, a plain PowerPoint presentation will move to the next slide with a single click. If your presentation has moving images or text, each one requires a single click to progress. After all interactive parts of the slide are completed, a final click transitions to the next slide.

Q. I’m left-handed. Are some remotes easier to use than others? A. Most of the presentation remotes on the market have axial symmetry, which means you can reach buttons just as easily holding it in the left hand as the right. For remotes with a side power switch, it’s usually located on the left lateral side. If you’re concerned about accidentally hitting it during use, opt for a remote with the switch on the back.

Q.  Because my presentation remote is wireless, do I need to worry about any other device interference? A. Sometimes there is interference or interruptions during use if your USB receiver is plugged into a computer with other wireless devices, like a wireless keyboard . You could disconnect them temporarily in settings or manually remove their USB receivers during your presentation.

Q. My presentation remote worked fine at home, but I can’t get it to work in this room/auditorium. Now what do I do? A. If there is someone technical in the room who can help, hopefully they can resolve the issue. If not, call for IT assistance. While you’re waiting for them to arrive, try the USB receiver in another computer. You can also try one in another room to determine whether the issue is the computer or the remote itself.

The 7 Best PowerPoint Clickers on the Market (2024 Review)

Written by co-founder Kasper Langmann , Microsoft Office Specialist.

Want to step up your presentation game? A smart and reliable PowerPoint clicker is all you need🎯

It is a small wireless remote that fits in your hand. Use it to move between different slides. Pause or restart, laser point, and control what your audience gets to see.

The right PowerPoint clicker can turn you into a presentation wizard🧙🏼‍♂️

But with so many of them on the market, how do you find the right one? Below, I’ve listed the seven absolute best PowerPoint clickers on the market.

⚠️Spoiler Alert⚠️

My top pick is the Logitech R800 .

It stands out as one of the most advanced clickers with very well-thought-out features. Such as a small LCD to help you track the time gone into presenting. Set a timer on it or monitor the battery level of your clicker🔋

However, these might not make the most important features for your needs. To find the best of the best for yourself, continue reading.

A quick note of how we test each clicker

Each clicker on this list is best in at least one crucial aspect. Be it the battery or the laser light, or something else.

To pull this list together, we have evaluated each presenter on a total of 5 parameters 💪

Laser Pointer, Battery, Control Range, Compatibility, User Friendliness.

So, in the review below, we will score each of these parameters for every clicker. Based on these, you can find the clicker that best suits your needs.

PowerPoint Clickers Reviewed

1: Logitech R800 (Best Overall)

2: Kensington Wireless Presenter K33272WW (Best Basic)

3: Kensington K72426AMA (Best Cursor Control)

4: Logitech R500 (Easiest to Use)

5: Amerteer Wireless Presenter (Best on Budget)

6: Amerteer Finger Ring Presenter (Best Ring Presenter)

7: NINJAABXY Wireless Clicker (Best Ergonomic Design)

This list was last updated on January 4th, 2023.

1. Logitech R800 (Best Overall)

The Logitech R800 is the perfect choice for professionals who can’t stand anything less than perfection.

The best highlight of this presenter? An excellent battery life. It works on two AAA batteries that will give you a 20-hour lifetime in laser light mode😍

And in simple presentation mode, the battery life goes up to 1050 hours. No meeting lasts longer than that.

Plus, the LCD screen allows users to track the battery life. So you are well informed about the battery life, and there’s no guessing game.

Specifications in the version we reviewed

  • Laser Light: Green laser light
  • Connectivity: Plug-and-play USB Receiver
  • Battery: 2 AAA batteries
  • Control Range: 100 Feet (30 meters)
  • Special feature: LCD Display with track of time and battery

Score on review parameters

  • Laser Pointer: Green laser light is a big plus as it never fails (not even in well-lit rooms).
  • Battery Type: Two replaceable AAA batteries give you an excellent battery life of 20 to 1050 hours.
  • Control Range: A 100-feet control range. This means you can roam around your conference room (and even in a nearby garden) freely. The clicker will still work. And if you get a little too away, the reception indicator will beep to bring you back in the control range.
  • User Friendliness: Plug and play means just connecting the USB receiver to any Windows PC, and that’s it. No complicated setups. When done, unplug the USB receiver and store it inside the actual clicker.
  • LCD Screen: Here’s an additional feature that we would love to highlight. The LCD on top of the presenter allows you to track the time, the battery, and wireless reception. Get silent or vibration alerts when the battery goes low.
  • Value-for-Money: For $78 and all these modern features, we won’t call it exorbitant. But yes, slightly overpriced.

Overall Spreadsheeto Rating: 💚💚💚💚💚💚 (6/6)

This, in my view, is the best choice for professionals. With live information on the LCD screen, there’s no chance of running out of battery or range.

2. Kensington Wireless Presenter K33272WW (Best Basic)

If you need a basic PowerPoint clicker that’s reliable and easy to use, look no further. This wireless presenter from Kensington will take care of it all.

With a four-intuitive-button design, it is very user-friendly. You need not wrap your head around a complicated design with lots of buttons and unnecessary functions😏

It’s simple, very durable, and ergonomically built to fit your hands.

It offers AES 28-bit encryption (also adopted by the US Govt. as the encryption standard). This makes it safe and secure against any hacking attempts.

  • Laser Light: Red
  • Battery : External battery
  • Control Range: 65 Feet
  • Special feature: AES 128-bit encryption (secure wireless technology)
  • Price : $38
  • Laser Pointer: A red pointer laser light is great for a basic presenter.
  • Battery Type: Replaceable battery goes a long way.
  • Control Range: A Plug-and-play 2.4GHz and 65 feet control range are pretty good even if you have a large-sized auditorium to address.
  • User Friendliness: An intuitive design of four buttons to move between slides, hide the screen and use the laser light makes it very user-friendly.
  • Value-for-Money: If you’re focused on reliability and longevity – a basic design for $38 might bring great value for you. But considering the only very basic features offered by it, we don’t score it great in this aspect.

Overall Spreadsheeto Rating: 💚💚💚💚💚🤍 (5/6)

Although the Kensington K33272WW provides an internal compartment for storing the USB receiver, it’s inside the battery cover. You might find it difficult to detach the battery cover to store the USB receiver every time. Other clicker models have a more convenient style for USB receiver storage.

3. Kensington K72426AMA (Best Cursor Control)

Which is the second best PowerPoint clicker on this list? The Kensington K72426AMA.

Why? The list of reasons is a little long✌

But the best part is the joystick in it that gives you cursor control. This PowerPoint clicker from Kensington is almost a portable mouse.

Other clickers would allow you to move between slides, but what if you want to click something on the slide (like a hyperlink)? Would you rush back to your PC to use the mouse? That’s no longer needed.

Use this clicker to launch any file or click anywhere with its joystick.

Wireless presenter with bright green laser pointer and cursor control for presentations.

  • Laser Light: Green laser
  • Connectivity : Plug-and-play USB / MicroSD Card
  • Control Range: 150 Feet (50 meters)
  • Compatibility : Windows & Mac OS X (Keynote and PowerPoint)
  • Special feature: Cursor control mode (Joystick helps using it as a mouse)
  • Price : $45
  • Laser Pointer: Green laser light which is 10X brighter than ordinary red laser pointers. Also, if you think red is a little too harsh to use on-screen, go green.
  • Battery Type: Replaceable battery.
  • Control Range: Excellent control range of 150 feet. That’s the best control range we have seen in all the presenters reviewed until now.
  • User Friendliness: Simple design with four intuitive buttons. Specially designed contours to facilitate holding for long hours.
  • Value-for-Money: Excellent features for a reasonable price of $45. Great value for money.
Kensington offers similar models in two opalescent colors – pearl white and rose gold. Both of them are real eye candies. If you want an aesthetic look with great functionality, check out Kensington K75771WW (Pearl White) and K757720WW (Rose Gold).

4. Logitech R500 (Easiest to Use)

Minimalism, but with some sass! If that’s your demand, the Logitech R500 is meant for you.

The R500 is a hassle-free, reliable presenter. It comes with three big buttons that are intuitively designed so you can confidently navigate between slides without having to look down⚡

Affordable, easy-to-use wireless presenter with laser pointer and presentation mode.

  • Laser Light: Red laser
  • Connectivity : Plug-and-play USB / Bluetooth
  • Compatibility : Windows, Android, MacOS, Linux. Presentation software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, iWork, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.)
  • Battery : AAA battery (runs for 12 months)
  • Control Range: 65 Feet (20 meters)
  • Special feature: Pairing with the Logitech Presentation App
  • Price : $76
  • Laser Pointer: Bright red laser light
  • Battery Type: Replaceable AAA battery runs for 12 months. Also includes a power saving mode to save battery under low battery conditions.
  • Control Range: Move away freely for up to a 20 feet control range.
  • User Friendliness: The rubber texture and textured buttons make using this presentation remote control easier. It will fit in your palm snugly. Excellent user-friendliness.
  • Connectivity : If you’re buying R500, must take note of this feature. Unlike all other clickers, the R500 can also be connected via a Bluetooth connection in addition to a USB receiver.
  • Value-for-Money: R500 offers great features but, for $76, it’s a little over-priced.
If you want to navigate confidently, easily, and freely between slides of your daily presentations – I believe R500 to be one of the best fits for you. It is compatible with almost all operating systems.

5. Amerteer Wireless Presenter (Best on Budget)

Got hyperlinks in your slides that you want to launch during the presentation?

Ordinary presenters won’t help you with this situation – you need the Amerteer Wireless Presenter . It’s slim like a pen and lightweight like a feather🖊

If you need an excellent presenter but are on a tight budget – you’ll not find an option better than this.

  • Connectivity : Plug-and-play USB Receiver
  • Battery : AAA battery
  • Special feature: Supports hyperlinks
  • Control Range: 39 Feet (12 meters)
  • Price : $12

Laser Pointer: Powerful red laser light. Battery Type: This doesn’t include a battery. You’d have to insert an AAA battery. We don’t appreciate this part much. Control Range: Allows a control range of 39 feet. User Friendliness: Very easy to use. Has a hyperlink button that’ll navigate you through all the hyperlinks on the screen with one press. Double-clicking the same button will launch the selected hyperlink. Additionally, it has a very slim design that looks just like a pen. Value-for-Money: For $12 only, it’s literally like buying a bag of chips (pringles, let’s say). For this price, the value for money on this product is just too good.

This one’s a good choice – and the price tag makes it even better.

6. Amerteer Finger Ring Presenter (Best Ring Presenter)

Let us now move on from simple remote control-shaped designs. Need something different?

Something as compact as a finger ring? Let me introduce you to the Amerteer Finger Ring Presenter 💍

What to Look for When Buying Wireless Presenters

There is no doubt that the best wireless presenters can help you spice up your presentation by improving your delivery and time management. There are however a few things that you need to keep in mind when looking for a wireless presenter remote, including:

  • Power: Most wireless presenters will either be rechargeable or use a battery. You need a clicker that makes good use of the battery power by automatically sleeping when not in use. Those that have LCD displays should make it easy to easily tell the battery levels even in the midst of a presentation.
  • Pointer: Think of how you are going to use your clicker. If you are mostly giving presentations in a classroom a red laser pointer might be adequate to point at whiteboards, but if you regularly host business meetings and share presentations on screen you need strong green pointer.
  • Range: What are your movement needs? If you typically give presentations in larger spaces and you like to move around, you need to go for clickers that have a good wireless control range.
  • Compatibility: Do not assume that all clickers are compatible with all operating systems. Make sure your preferred wireless remote presenter can work on your device. Check if it is a plug-and-play device, or if you will need to download software to use it.
  • Design: You need to keep this in mind when choosing your wireless presenter. How are the keys arranged? Are they easy to use? Does it have an ergonomic design that’s comfortable to hold?

What is a Presentation Remote

Presentation remotes are truly helpful gadgets for people who need to make presentations or reports quite often. This compact digital device allows you to switch the slides when you wish and, therefore, to control the time for each slide. Most wireless presentation remotes have a built-in laser pointer that helps you draw the attention of the audience to a certain important aspect. If you want to make a really successful presentation, no matter if it's at school, college, or at work, a USB presentation remote is a must-have device.

If you wish to use a versatile remote for controlling several digital devices at a time, read our review of the best TV remotes and get one of them.

What Features to Compare

The first thing you should pay attention to when making a choice of a wireless presentation remote is the design. Consider the shape and the size of the pointer as well as the material it's made of. You should use the device that you will be able to hold comfortably. If the material is slippery, you might even drop the device. Also, if the remote is too big for your palm, using it won't be convenient. Also, the best gadgets have a special storage place for a USB receiver. This way, you will never lose this tiny yet indispensable peripheral. If the model you choose has no receiver storage, make sure to check if it has a special case or a bag. The best wireless presentation remotes have light indicators, informing you about such important issues as the battery charge level and the signal strength. There's another highly important aspect we are going to draw your attention to - very often we prepare files for presentations and forget to copy them to a flash drive. Has this ever happened to you? Quite likely it has! And that's why the best presentation remotes have a receiver with a slot for microSD cards. Thanks to this important feature, you can copy all your presentation files to a memory card. That's particularly handy for busy people like teachers and professors.

Next, you need to know what each wireless presentation remote can actually do. It's self-evident that slide switch is not the only option these devices can cope with. There are many other handy capabilities that will make your presentations really interesting and efficient. Many presentation remotes support a Mouse mode which allows you to control the cursor on the screen of your computer. This way you can pick the files you need, open them, as well as launch apps/videos or even click on hyperlinks. Very often the audience can't get major points of a presentation and that's why a laser pointer comes in handy too. How does it work? You just need to push the button and a laser pointer will appear on the screen, so you will be able to highlight the most important features. Many people think that the laser pointer glows red only, but this is wrong. Today, some wireless presentation remotes glow green - a green laser is brighter. Moreover, some devices feature violet or blue laser pointers but they aren't widespread yet. Finally, when you are done with the slides, you may need to switch the audience's attention from a large glowing screen to yourself. How to do it without losing time? The answer is simple - turn off the screen completely. That's why most presentation remotes have a Black Screen button that allows you to do it in the blink.

We've come to the final features that are worth you consideration. Since nearly all presentation remotes are wireless, you should know their operational range. If the computer is too far, the signal from the remote to the receiver won't be strong enough. No need to say, the range is important if you are going to make presentations in large premises. If it's just a small conference room in your office, the range won't be important. Also, don't forget to check which operating system a USB presentation remote is compatible with. Most of them are compatible with Windows (usually, all versions are supported, though Windows 10 might be a trouble for certain dongles), but if you make lots of presentations and, thus, need to use different kinds of computers, choose the remote compatible with Mac OS as well. Some devices can also work with Linux and Android-operated computers. In the end, check what power source every device uses. As usual, it's either a built-in battery or 1-2 AAA batteries. The batteries can be replaced quickly but if a remote has a built-in battery, it should be charged in advance.

Best Presentation Remotes for Windows PCs in 2022

What are the best wireless presentation remotes for PC? These are.

best presentation remote 2023

If you're giving a big presentation, the ability to move and interact more with your audience is incredibly valuable. If you have to awkwardly stand up behind your laptop the whole time, it's nowhere near as engaging.

You need a reliable presentation remote that connects easily and travels well. Here are our recommendations for the best options for PCs.

Satechi Bluetooth Smart Pointer

Logitech r800, kensington k33374usa.

Why you can trust Windows Central Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

Satechi

I work for a well-traveled magician on the side, and we never go anywhere without our Satechi Bluetooth Smart Pointers. He's gone through three brands, and Satechi has always stood out as the best. The remote connects via Bluetooth and has a fantastic range. (We've generally had great luck between 20 and 30 feet).

If you're clicking through a slideshow and need to go back to a specific slide, there's a handy number pad hidden behind a little slide-out door. If you enter the number of the slide, it'll go back for you, which is incredibly handy when music misfires for a magic trick and you need to try to recapture the wonder.

My whole show rides on my presentation triggering properly, and the Satechi remote has been the only one I've used that works every time — Chris Funk, The Wonderist

You can also control music playback, skip tracks and slides, and control the volume of your device, so you don't need to be anywhere near your computer to do what you need to. These remotes are $45 on Amazon and come in black or silver.

best presentation remote 2023

The Logitech R800 features a bright green laser pointer that's easy to see in any room, and the USB wireless receiver should allay any worries you might feel using a Bluetooth remote. With a 100-foot range, you're free to move about as you please without worrying about losing your connection.

The R800 has an LCD display that features a timer, which delivers silent vibrational alerts, so you can keep track of time without having to disengage from your audience. The large buttons are easy to navigate without having to look, and you'll get solid battery life from just two AAA batteries. Pricing starts around $50.

Doosl

Doosl's presentation remote is a little thicker than a pen, but it'll still fit comfortably in your pocket, and its hook helps it stay in place so you always know where it is. It features a laser pointer, so you can get the whole room focused on what matters, and it has great page-up and page-down support, as well as play, pause, and black screen controls for PowerPoint presentations.

The universal receiver means you can just plug in and go — no driver or pairing is required. Just in case you forget to turn off your Doosl, it features auto standby and "deep sleep" modes to conserve battery. Pricing starts at only $15.

Kensington

Kensington's $30-ish wireless presenter is designed to be ergonomic, with a comfortable in-hand feel and a simple button layout that allows you to switch back and forth between slides and use the laser pointer without needing to constantly look down at your hand.

The mini USB receiver fits in the remote's housing, so it never gets lost, and you don't need to pair the remote with your computer or install a driver — just plug it in and away you go. The receiver has a 60-foot range, so you'll be able to move about the room with confidence, knowing you'll stay connected.

DinoFire

Aside from its wicked cool name, the DinoFire presentation remote is an awesome, pen-sized device that uses an RF receiver to communicate with your computer. It can control PowerPoint, the whole iWork suite, Word, and Excel, so if you're giving any sort of business presentation, you're covered. And at only around $14, you can grab a couple for the road.

This remote runs on one AAA battery, and that's either convenient because you don't need to remember to charge it, or it's a little inconvenient because you can't just recharge it on the go. The RF receiver has a 98-foot range, so whether you're in a conference room or an auditorium, you're connected and in control.

best presentation remote 2023

This wireless presentation remote features a USB receiver, a 39-foot range, and an excellent button layout for presentations where full engagement is key. The forward and back buttons are defined by raised bumps, so you know exactly which way your presentation is going at all times. There's also a blackout mode, so you can cut to black at the end or while you prepare your presentation.

For $15, this remote isn't exactly feature-rich, but according to its Amazon reviews , it's reliable and a great minimalist option. It supports the Office suite, and it has a red laser pointer. And it takes one AAA battery.

Updated February 2018: Added the Beboncool budget option and swapped in the Logitech R800 in place of the R400, since its LCD display is perfect for timed presentations and total control. Also added pricing for each remote.

The Best Universal Remote Control

The Insignia 8-Device Backlit Universal Remote (left) and the Sofabaton U2 Universal Remote Control (right) leaning up against a couple of throw pillows.

Fewer people need a universal remote control these days, which explains why the category is dying and great options are hard to find. But if your home-entertainment system is more complex than the basic media player, TV, and soundbar combo, and you’re looking for one remote to control all your gear, the Sofabaton U2 Universal Remote Control is the best option we’ve found. This model has some notable flaws, but it can control a wider variety of home-entertainment devices, and it has a better physical design than its competitors.

Everything we recommend

best presentation remote 2023

Sofabaton U2 Universal Remote Control

Good features and performance for the price.

This remote can control 15 AV components, including Bluetooth-based devices, and the button layout is intuitive. But it lacks backlighting and activity buttons, and programming advanced tasks can be challenging.

Buying Options

best presentation remote 2023

Insignia 8-Device Backlit Universal Remote

If you need to control only infrared devices.

This remote can control eight AV components, has a logical button layout, and is fully backlit. But it can’t control Bluetooth devices, and the setup process is archaic.

What you need to know

If your home-entertainment system is more complex than the basic TV-soundbar-streamer setup, you’d benefit from a universal remote.

Since fewer people need universal remotes these days, you won’t find many good options that you can set up and program yourself.

We looked for remotes that can control up to eight devices, have an intuitive button design, and support more advanced programming.

The cheapest remotes usually control only infrared devices. The better models can also control gear via Bluetooth and sometimes Wi-Fi.

The Sofabaton U2 Universal Remote Control offers more features and control options than similarly priced competitors. It can control up to 15 devices, including both infrared- and Bluetooth-based AV devices, so it’s more flexible than many lower-priced remotes, which typically work only with IR devices.

The remote’s button layout is intuitive, and the OLED screen at the top makes it easy to switch between the AV devices you want to control. You can program the U2 using a setup app for iOS or Android , and the app provides a lot of customization options to reassign what the remote’s buttons can do.

While the U2 remote is better than everything else we tested, it still has some notable drawbacks. It lacks backlighting, and it has no dedicated activity buttons for grouping different devices together to perform tasks such as “watch TV” or “watch a movie.” You can still create activities and assign them to random buttons, but you have to figure out all the programming yourself—and we fear that the app’s learning curve may be difficult for someone who has never programmed a universal remote.

The Insignia 8-Device Backlit Universal Remote is a good choice for people whose gear works via infrared control (IR); it doesn’t work with devices that you control by Bluetooth, radio frequency (RF), or Wi-Fi. If you’re not sure how your device is controlled, try this: Point your device’s remote at the floor in the opposite direction from the device’s location and then press a button. If the remote still executes the command, it’s likely using Bluetooth or RF, not IR.

This fully backlit remote can control eight devices and has all the important buttons you need, including three activity controls that allow you to group devices together to watch a movie, listen to music, or watch TV. The layout is clean, albeit somewhat generic-looking, and the buttons are fairly large.

The programming process is old-school, though: You have to manually input codes for your different AV devices and then teach the remote any functions that are missing or executing incorrectly. These steps are not as quick or intuitive as using an app, and the owner manual is not as clear and concise as it could be. But at the end of the process, this remote should be able to do most everything you need it to.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our pick: sofabaton u2 universal remote control, runner-up: insignia 8-device backlit universal remote, other good universal remote controls, what to look forward to, the competition.

I am the supervising editor of Wirecutter’s AV coverage, and I have worked as a writer and editor in the consumer electronics industry for over 20 years. During that time, I have reviewed numerous audio and video devices, including virtually every major DIY universal-remote platform.

Today’s home-entertainment equipment delivers more functionality in fewer boxes. The average living-room entertainment system may include only one source device—say, a streaming media player, cable/satellite set-top box, or gaming console—plus a smart TV and a soundbar. For a setup like this, a universal remote probably isn’t necessary because basic control of these devices (such as browsing content, changing channels, and adjusting volume) is built into—or can be easily added to—the remote that came with your media player or TV.

If, on the other hand, your home-entertainment system is built around an AV receiver and multiple source components, and sitting down to watch a movie or play a video game requires shuffling among several remotes to switch inputs and control multiple components simultaneously, a universal remote is exactly what you need.

In the past, you could find a few high-end DIY remotes that incorporated a bit of smart-home control to adjust your lighting, temperature, or security system too, but those options have all but vanished. If you’re looking for advanced whole-house and smart-home control, you’re better off turning to a local specialty AV retailer that can create a more personalized control system from a company such as Control4 , Crestron , or URC . It’s a more expensive option, but if done properly, it will result in a much more satisfying experience.

A closeup of the Insignia 8-Device Backlit Universal Remote (right) and the Sofabaton U2 Universal Remote Control (left) as they lay flat on the floor.

In years past, if you wanted an advanced universal remote that you could program yourself, you had many choices, from brands such as Harmony, Pronto, Sony, UEI, and URC. But today’s sad truth is that fewer people are buying DIY universal remotes, and this category is nearly dead. When Logitech discontinued Harmony universal remotes a few years ago, it killed the last of the big-name brands.

Sure, you can still find a ton of inexpensive replacement remotes whose primary purpose is to replace the one the dog chewed up. But those remotes aren’t designed to provide an intuitive, customized, activity-based experience; they’re just designed to hold a lot of buttons to control your different devices.

In contrast, a good universal remote should offer the following features:

  • It controls at least eight devices. That should cover the average audio/video enthusiast’s system and then some. This system may include a TV or projector, a DVD/Blu-ray player, a cable/satellite DVR, a surround-sound receiver, and probably a media streamer (such as a Google Chromecast or an Apple TV). A game console or audio player might also be included.
  • It has physical buttons in a logical layout. The remote should have all the necessary buttons to perform desired tasks—and yes, we think physical buttons are essential, as opposed to a touchscreen, which requires you to look away from the TV to find the right button. The most important buttons (such as volume, pause, and play) should be readily accessible. It’s helpful if the remote is backlit so you can see the buttons in the dark.
  • It can learn commands from your existing remotes. If you can’t teach the universal remote specific commands from your device remotes, or reprogram the buttons to do different things, the remote is far less likely to be capable of doing everything you need it to.
  • Activity buttons are a huge perk. Activity buttons—such as “watch TV’ or “listen to music”—combine multiple actions into one button press (officially called a macro) and let you control multiple devices at the same time. For instance, instead of having to push separate buttons to turn on your TV, switch HDMI inputs, power on your AV receiver, change inputs there, turn on your Blu-ray player, and—finally—start your movie, you can reduce all of that to one push of a single activity button.
  • The more a remote costs, the more flexibility it should have to control different kinds of devices. Many AV devices still rely on infrared (IR) control, in which you must point the remote’s IR transmitter directly at the device’s IR receiver. It’s common for lower-priced universal remotes to work only with IR devices. But a growing number of devices, especially streaming media boxes, are controlled via Bluetooth. Some devices are controlled via radio frequency (RF) or Wi-Fi. Make sure that you know how all of your devices are controlled before buying a universal remote. It is rare to find a universal remote that offers built-in voice control.

While the pickings are definitely slim these days, we continue to test any new universal remote that meets the core criteria above.

To test each remote, I program it to control two different AV systems in my home: One is a more basic living-room setup with a Hisense TV, a Polk soundbar, and an Apple TV 4K media player. The second is a more complex home-theater system with an LG TV, an Onkyo AV receiver, an Oppo Ultra HD Blu-ray player, a Chromecast with Google TV, and an Xbox One X. The equipment consists of a mix of traditional IR devices and Bluetooth devices. During my testing, I live with each remote for a while to see how intuitive and reliable it is to use on a daily basis.

The Sofabaton U2 Universal Remote Control laying flat on its back.

The Sofabaton U2 Universal Remote Control delivers the essential elements we look for in a good universal remote: the ability to control many assorted devices, a good physical design with all the necessary buttons, and the option to customize how those buttons work to get the best experience. The U2 isn’t perfect, but it’s better than every other affordable DIY remote we’ve tested.

It can control up to 15 infrared and Bluetooth devices. Most “universal” remotes under $50 can control only infrared devices, those that require line-of-sight between the remote and the device. That covers a lot of TVs, disc players, audio receivers, and cable/satellite boxes. But a growing number of new devices rely instead on Bluetooth control, which means you need a remote like the U2 if you want complete system control.

In our tests, we were able to program the U2 to control all of our devices in two systems—a total of eight components, including Google Chromecast and Apple 4K TV media players that use Bluetooth.

Like all other remotes in this price range, the U2 can’t control RF or Wi-Fi gear, which includes smart-home devices and any Roku streaming device that comes with the Roku voice remote .

It has a clean, simple design, with almost all the buttons you need. The remote itself is a manageable size that’s not too wide, long, or heavy; even with my small hands, I could reach all the controls with my thumb without having to shift the remote around in my hand. The bottom half of the chassis is a bit thicker and heavier than the top, which keeps the remote feeling balanced. The U2 runs on two AA batteries, which are included in the package.

At the top of the remote is a simple OLED screen that shows the model names of the devices you’ve added (you can customize the text), plus a scroll wheel to quickly select the device you want to control. The screen automatically lights up when you pick up the remote. Referring to customized device names is more intuitive than looking at the generically labeled device buttons you get on many remotes (including our runner-up ).

Because the U2 is not locked in to a set of prelabeled device buttons, it can control multiple models of the same type—say, two media players, two TVs, and two audio systems. It can control a total of 15 devices. As a result, you can set up this remote to control multiple systems around the house.

Screenshots showing controls inside the Sofabaton iOS app

Basic programming is easy, thanks to the setup app. Programming the remote requires the free Sofabaton app for iOS or Android . You have no option to use computer software or to program the remote manually, so if you don’t own an iOS or Android mobile device, this is not the remote for you (consider our runner-up pick instead).

The remote communicates with the app via Bluetooth, so the first step in the setup process is to pair the two. Next you add the devices you want to control by choosing from a list of preloaded devices or entering the manufacturer and device name. Sofabaton claims that its code database includes over 60,000 devices and 6,000 brands. The software automatically (and wirelessly) updates the remote with the proper control codes after you add each new device.

I loaded all of my gear from both of my AV systems in just a few minutes, since all of my devices were in the Sofabaton database. At this point, the remote was able to execute most of the basic commands I needed for my devices.

The buttons are customizable, but it requires effort and patience. Once you’ve loaded all your devices into the app, you have the option to customize the remote’s buttons. With most devices, you can reassign any button to perform any task on any device that you’ve loaded into your system configuration. You can also quickly teach the U2 infrared codes from your existing remotes to make sure it has all the control capabilities you need.

Overall, I found this process to be straightforward but not necessarily quick. Your time investment will depend on how precisely you want to tweak your controls. The Sofabaton app makes you customize every little thing yourself. For instance, you get no quick code to lock the volume and mute buttons to your AV receiver or soundbar; you have to manually reassign the volume buttons for every source device. This is easy enough to do in the app ( here’s a helpful video ), but if you have lots of specific desires for how things ought to work, be prepared to spend time making it all happen.

The good news is that all of the programming and customization has to happen only once (unless you tend to upgrade your AV gear a lot). And any little tweak you make uploads to the remote instantly via Bluetooth. I didn’t encounter any connection issues between the remote and the app, and when all was said and done, the U2 successfully controlled both of my systems the way I wanted it to.

The U2 offers some minor improvements over the U1. Compared with the original, now-discontinued U1 (our former top pick), the U2’s IR range is wider and longer, so you don’t have to point the remote right at your gear rack to make sure commands execute properly. The new system is a little more forgiving.

Also, the number pad on the new remote is larger, which makes it a touch longer overall. And the battery compartment is a bit easier to open.

The original U1 (top) with the new U2 (bottom) laying flat on the floor.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Although we found a lot to like about the Sofabaton U2, it has a few significant drawbacks. The hard truth is, you have only a smattering of DIY universal-remote options to choose from these days, and they all have notable flaws. We think the U2’s low price makes some of its flaws easier to overlook, but you may feel differently.

It lacks backlighting. Add in the remote’s black-buttons-on-a-black-shell design, and using it in a dark room is somewhat more challenging. But the button layout is intuitive, and the main navigation, volume, and channel buttons are clearly distinguished by size and shape, both of which help to alleviate those challenges.

It has no dedicated activity buttons. These days, many remotes have dedicated activity buttons to launch a sequence of commands, such as “watch TV” or “watch a movie.” Sofabaton has inexplicably omitted them here. You can create your own activity button that does what a “watch TV” button would do, but you have to figure out the macro (or sequence of steps) and assign it to a random button. That may work fine for you since you’ll know what button you picked, but it won’t be as clear for others trying to use the remote.

For my family, the most logical option was to program a “watch TV” macro onto the power button for the Apple TV or the Google Chromecast—likewise with the Xbox for a gaming macro. But it’s a shame that Sofabaton omitted such a simple and important feature.

If you’ve never programmed a universal remote before, advanced setup will be a challenge. The process of creating multistep activities—for instance, to turn all your gear on, switch to the right inputs, and make sure volume control is assigned to the right device—is more mentally taxing than some people are willing to tolerate. Gone are the days when Harmony’s computer software would figure out all the steps for you.

Don’t expect much help from the Sofabaton literature, either. Neither the setup guide nor the app provides instructions for macro or activity setup. Here’s a helpful video .

It can pair with only one Bluetooth device at a time. When you’re trying to add a Bluetooth-based source such as a Google Chromecast, you have to unpair the remote from the setup app to test the device control and then re-pair it to the app to proceed with setup. It’s kind of annoying, but here’s hoping you have to do this only once, during initial setup.

The Insignia 8-Device Backlit Universal Remote laying flat on its back.

If you can control all of your devices by infrared (IR), the Insignia 8-Device Backlit Universal Remote is a nice alternative to our top pick that’s slightly more affordable. As the name suggests, it can control up to eight AV components and is fully backlit. (A five-device version is also available.) The setup process is archaic, but it does not require use of an app, which some people may prefer.

It has all the necessary buttons but no customizable device screen. This Insignia remote looks like your standard stock remote, with a whole lotta buttons taking up every bit of the front-panel real estate. Thankfully, the button layout is logical, with core functions such as volume, channel, mute, home, menu, back, exit, and navigation grouped together near the center. And the buttons are large and decently spaced.

The remote is longer and less contoured than the Sofabaton U2, and I had more trouble reaching all the buttons with my thumb without having to shift the remote around in my hand. But the full backlighting is a welcome addition. The remote requires two AA batteries (not included).

At the top you’ll find three activity buttons (with icons to watch TV, listen to music, or watch a movie), as well as eight device buttons with generic labels for items such as TV, stream, disc, and audio. When you press a device button, it briefly lights up to confirm that you are now controlling that device.

You can assign any device to any of the eight buttons, but since this remote has no customizable device-name screen as on our top pick , it’s best to match the button to the device type whenever possible. That essentially limits this remote to controlling only one AV system, or maybe one video system and one audio system.

It controls only IR-based equipment. That means it needs line-of-sight with all your gear. We found the IR window to be sufficiently wide to ensure that commands execute reliably. If you want to hide your gear away in a cabinet, you need to pick up an IR repeater kit , as well.

Because this Insignia remote does not support Bluetooth devices, I could not program it to control my Bluetooth-based Google Chromecast, but I was able to use it to control all the other components in my system.

A closeup of the top of the Insignia remote.

The setup process takes place on the remote itself. Instead of the app-based approach you get with our top pick, this Insignia remote requires that you either manually put it in setup mode and punch in codes to add your devices or initiate an automatic code search for each device button. Either way works, but be prepared to jump back and forth a lot between the remote and the supplied setup pamphlets to follow the instructions.

Unlike cheaper eight-device remotes we looked at, this Insignia model does have learning capabilities, so you can reassign buttons, fix codes that aren’t working, and build macros. I found it easy to teach the remote some missing codes from my AV receiver, as well as to reconfigure how the buttons worked to control my Apple TV media streamer properly.

I also liked the ability to quickly set a “master volume” code that locks the volume and mute buttons to your AV receiver, soundbar, or TV without a lot of extra programming. In addition, the manual approach allows you to fix commands instantly—no need to reach for your phone to launch a setup app.

That said, my attempts to build more advanced activity macros for “watch TV” and “watch a movie” definitely involved some trial and error, which I attribute more to the confusing owner manual than to the remote itself. Setup and customization took me longer on this remote than on the Sofabaton U2, but eventually I programmed this remote to do everything I wanted—except control my Bluetooth-based Chromecast, of course.

If you want a more stylish alternative to the Insignia remote : The One For All Smart Control 8 URC7880 is similar in functionality to our runner-up pick. This is an IR-only, eight-device remote for which you must do most of the programming manually. (You can add devices via a setup app, but that’s it.) The manual process of adding devices, learning IR codes from your device remotes, and building macros is essentially the same as for the Insignia model, though the One For All manual is more clearly written.

Where the two remotes differ is in their physical design. This One For All model lacks backlighting but looks more sleek and modern. It has five activity options (versus three for the Insignia remote) and places the most commonly used controls lower. It has only one physical device button, which you have to press repeatedly to scroll through your various devices. The single activity button works the same way. We found this design to be less intuitive in everyday use, as getting to the command you need takes more button presses. But that’s a subjective call.

If you’re looking for a simplified, big-button remote for TV watching: The Flipper is an IR-only remote that’s specifically marketed toward older adults and people with dementia, but it’s also a simple remote for young children. This isn’t really a universal remote since it can control only two devices, namely a TV and a set-top box. It’s meant for people who watch live TV from traditional cable/satellite boxes or their TV’s internal tuner.

The Flipper remote, our pick for the best simple universal remote.

The Flipper has large buttons for power, mute, volume up/down, and channel up/down, as well as a number pad that hides beneath a slide-down panel. It isn’t backlit, but it uses different colors for the power, mute, volume, and channel buttons, which may be more helpful for those with low vision.

I tested the Flipper using the internal TV tuners in Samsung and LG TVs. But thanks to the mom of a Wirecutter colleague, I also was able to get it in the hands of a few residents at a senior living center who were in need of a new remote. Although our testers would’ve liked the volume and channel buttons to be vertically aligned (instead of horizontally), they did appreciate the Flipper’s size and shape: The buttons were easy to read, and the remote was not too heavy, too big, or too small. They found it easy to set up (the process took about one minute), and they thought the instructions were easy to understand. And it controlled their two devices perfectly.

We also like that the Flipper gives you three ways to program the remote to help ensure compatibility.

At CES 2024 , One For All highlighted the $60 Smart Control Pro , a fully backlit universal remote that can control up to six devices. There are three activity buttons, as well as direct buttons to switch between devices and to launch the Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and YouTube apps. This remote offers voice control for Google or Android TV media players, and you can set up the remote using the My Nevo app.

Although we prefer universal remotes that can control eight devices, we still plan to test this one to test how it compares with our picks.

Sofabaton’s X1 Universal Remote Control costs more than three times the price of the U2. This model can control a lot more devices—up to 60—and adds a wireless hub to control AV and smart-home equipment via Wi-Fi. The remote itself has a larger, more customizable screen (with the ability to create activities) but fewer physical buttons. The X1 is clearly the company’s attempt to create a more advanced DIY remote to fill the void left by Harmony’s departure, but early reviews were quite negative, and Sofabaton pulled the remote from sale for a while. The company has since reintroduced the X1—but the reviews are still mediocre, so we chose not to test it.

We tested GE’s 8-Device Backlit Universal Remote , a low-priced, fully backlit, IR-only remote that’s available in several colors. Its button layout and programming process are almost identical to that of our runner-up, the Insignia eight-device remote , but it lacks activity buttons. More importantly, it lacks learning capability, so you can’t program in macros, fix controls that don’t work properly, or add controls from your device remotes. This model will suffice if you just want the most basic control options for up to eight devices, but the more advanced user is likely to be frustrated by the absence of customization options.

Like the Flipper, Continuus’s EasyMote is a simplified, big-button remote. Our older testers generally liked the EasyMote, but they thought the Flipper’s slightly larger size made it more comfortable to hold. We appreciated the EasyMote’s bright, green backlighting (which you can turn off) and its wrist rope. But I noted that the instructions had smaller print, so they might be harder to read. Plus, the EasyMote doesn’t have a number pad to directly tune in a certain channel; this may be fine for people who stick with over-the-air channels or basic cable, but it will be a pain if you have a large channel lineup. Finally, the EasyMote offers only two ways to program in your devices, namely doing a quick code search or having it learn the IR from your device remotes. You can’t program in specific manufacturer codes as you can with the Flipper, which was something that we thought was easier and more reliable than doing a generic code search.

The Harmony Companion, the Harmony 665, and the Harmony Elite were former picks in this guide, but Harmony’s parent company, Logitech, discontinued the entire line. You might still find these remotes in stock or on a resale site, but no new models are being manufactured. Though each remote had its flaws, the Harmony line was still a step above the competition in how many features the remotes offered for the price and how much easier they were to program for people with complicated home-theater systems. If you’re thinking about getting one before they’re all gone, the company’s statement on the product discontinuation added the following: “We expect no impact to our customers by this announcement. We plan to support our Harmony community and new Harmony customers, which includes access to our software and apps to set up and manage your remotes. We also plan to continue to update the platform and add devices to our Harmony database. Customer and warranty support will continue to be offered.”

Universal Remote Control (the company) used to offer a variety of good DIY remotes, but it now focuses on the professional-installation market. You may be able to find some older DIY URC remotes online , but at elevated prices.

Several other universal remotes that we previously tested have been discontinued, including the Caavo Control Center and the Sevenhugs Smart Remote U and Smart Remote X.

If you don’t want another handheld device, you might consider an app-based control system, such as the (also-discontinued) Logitech Harmony Hub or the MoesGo Wi-Fi Smart IR+RF Remote Controller , which lets you use your mobile device as a remote control. We don’t recommend this approach, however, because using your mobile device’s touchscreen as a remote requires you to look away from the TV screen and down at your device to search for the right part of the screen to touch, and this makes channel surfing and volume tweaking cumbersome. Plus, it’s a pain to have to wake up your phone or tablet and wait for the app to reconnect with the system whenever you want to change the channel or the volume. Sure, to avoid that you could disable sleep mode on your phone, but in that case you’d be draining your phone’s battery while you’re watching a movie or show.

Knowing about the best presentation clickers is half of the information you need to purchase one. There are a few factors which you must bear in mind while choosing a suitable presentation remote. Below are some criteria that need to be considered when purchasing one.

How To Choose The Right Presentation Clicker?

The wireless control range offered by presentation remotes differ based on their model and make. When choosing a presentation clicker, it is crucial to gauge the room’s size in which the wireless presenter will be used. Some presenters usually have a connectivity range of 30 to 50 ft, while others have longer ranges of 100 to 300 ft.

  • Battery type

Presenter remotes rely on either AA or AAA batteries. Some require 2-batteries, while others are more power-efficient and require a single battery. Certain presenter remotes come with rechargeable batteries that last for prolonged periods on a single charge. In situations of continuous usage, you should purchase one with rechargeable batteries.

  • Compatibility

There are 2 factors to consider regarding wireless presentation remote compatibility – compatibility with the software and compatibility with the operating system. Most models are plug-and-play devices that require no added software installation. It is best to purchase one that requires no additional drivers.

  • Laser pointer

Almost all presenters are equipped with laser pointers. This is because it has become an indispensable part of a wireless presentation remote. When choosing a presenter remote, it is ideal to keep in mind the distance of the laser or beam.  The most common colors are green and red. While red remains to be a popular choice among consumers, green is a color that is noticeable on almost all colored slides.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will my presentation clicker work on a Mac and a TV?

While most are compatible with Windows and macOS, there are a few that may not work on macOS. Since a television screen is just a display output, if it is supported by the system software, it will run on a TV.

2. What color laser is best for a presentation pointer?

The two most popular colors are green and red. While red offers great visibility, a green laser pointer can be easier to see against some slides. This is why most professionals prefer using a remote clicker with a green laser pointer.

3. Isn’t it easier to download an app to my phone to control the presentation?

No, it isn’t. While it may seem like an easier and cost-saving alternative, it may not function as intended. Firstly, your phone will lack the tactile feel of dedicated buttons, and secondly, it may not function effectively when at a distance from the receiver.

4. Is it easy to control a presentation with a remote?

Yes, a presentation remote makes it easy to operate and control the slides in a presentation. In addition, using a remote doesn’t require you to ask for external help or stay near the laptop to change the slides.

5. Does a presentation remote need batteries?

Yes, most presentation remotes work on two AAA batteries, and some include a rechargeable battery for seamless operation.

What is a universal remote?

SofaBaton U1 in hand

The quick list 1. Best overall 2. Best budget 3. Best voice control 4. Discontinued remotes 5. What's a universal remote? 6. How to choose 7. How we test

The best universal remotes can help clean up the clutter on your coffee table. Instead of reaching for one remote to turn on your TV, another remote to turn on your soundbar, and yet another for your streaming stick, a universal remote can let you control everything from one device.

Better yet, the best universal remotes let you automate a number of tasks — such as turning on all the components, and having them change to the right settings — all with a single button press. Some universal remotes also have smart home controls, as well as voice search, so you can look for shows, movies, and more across multiple streaming services.

Among the best universal remotes, the choices are less than universal. Over the past few years, Logitech — which made the best universal remotes — discontinued its product line, so there are far fewer options than before, but you still have some choices.

Read on for the best universal remotes.

It can only control 15 devices, but the SofaBaton U2 costs a third of the X1, making it the more economical option.

SofaBaton X1

1. SofaBaton X1

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The closest thing you can get to Harmony's universal remotes is the SofaBaton X1. The remote itself has an attractive, comfortable design with just the right number of buttons — which are backlit, to boot. There's a small scroll wheel just underneath its display to let you switch between activities and devices; you then use the circular d-pad underneath to control your system. We liked the smooth, rounded edges of the X1, and its buttons offered just the right amount of resistance and feedback.

The X1 has a built-in battery (there's a USB-C port on the bottom of the remote), but it will last for weeks before it needs recharging. I wish it came with a small recharging cradle, which would make things just a little bit easier.

Like the Harmony Elite, the SofaBaton X1 sends its commands to a hub, so you can hide everything away behind a cabinet, for a cleaner look. Because the hub is connected to Wi-Fi, you can also link it to Alexa and Google Assistant for hands-free operation.

You can program the X1 with a number of macros to automatically turn your entertainment center to the right settings, However, it took some time for us to get everything programmed properly — getting it to switch the inputs on our Vizio TV was the hardest part — but after that, everything worked well.

2. SofaBaton U1

The SofaBaton U1 looks a heckuva lot like the now-discontinued Logitech Harmony Elite , and it tries its best to perform like the what was best universal remote, too. However, when your remote costs just $49 — a fraction of the Harmony — you have to cut a few corners. For starters, the SofaBaton doesn't feel as nice as the Logitech, and the button presses aren't as smooth.

There's also a bit of a learning curve to programming the SofaBaton U1; We've tested a bunch of universal remotes, and it took us quite a while to figure out the U1. Once we got things sorted, though, it worked pretty well. Check out the SofaBaton U1 if you're looking for a universal remote that's less than $50.

Note: The SofaBaton U1 has been discontinued, but has been replaced with the U2, which is more or less identical, but now has multiple built-in infrared receivers so that it has twice the range of the U1.

3. Amazon Fire TV Cube

The Amazon Fire TV Cube packs both one of the best streaming devices and Alexa into a single package, so you can use Amazon's assistant to not only look up shows and programs you want to watch, but also control your TV, cable box, switch HDMI inputs, and more.

Plus, as a streaming device, it offers an excellent 4K HDR image, fast response times, and more. The Fire TV interface could use some improvement — whose can't? — but it gives you access to just about every streaming service you could want. It also comes with a physical remote, but you can't use it to replicate everything you can do with your voice.

best universal remotes: Function101 Apple TV remote

4. Function101 Button Remote for Apple TV

Let's face it: The worst thing about the Apple TV is its remote. It prizes form over functionality, which with its minimalist design, is a real pain. The Function101 remote may not look as sleek as the Apple TV remote, but it's a heckuva lot easier to use. And, its larger size actually makes it more comfortable to hold.

However, the Function101 remote does not have a Siri button, so you can't use Apple's voice assistant to look up shows or enter passwords. But, at $39, it's a worthwhile tradeoff — until Apple designs something better.

Discontinued universal remotes

Logitech decided to discontinue making universal remotes, which is a shame, because it made the best universal remotes around. However, the company is still supporting its remotes for the time being. If you can find them at a reasonable price, it might be worth picking one up.

Logitech Harmony Elite ($349)

Devices Controlled: 15 Favorite Channels: 50 Smart Home Controls: Yes

Logitech’s Harmony Elite, can control up to 15 devices at once. In addition to physical buttons, it has a color touch screen from which you can quickly select a favorite channel. You can also create custom buttons, such as Watch a Movie, to automatically turn all your devices to the right settings.

The Harmony Elite works in conjunction with the Harmony Hub (included), enabling you to hide electronics in a cabinet. It also works with several smart-home devices, including Philips Hue lights and the Ecobee SmartThermostat . It can be connected with Amazon Alexa, so that you can issue Harmony Elite commands using nothing but your voice. It's one of the best Google Home compatible devices , too.

Read our full Logitech Harmony Elite review .

Logitech Harmony 665 ($50)

Devices Controlled: 10 Favorite Channels: 23 Smart Home Controls: No

The Logitech Harmony 665 has a small display (which is not a touchscreen) with buttons arrayed around it, letting you quickly access activities, favorite channels and more.  The Harmony 665 can be paired with up to 10 devices, and you can program up to 23 of your favorite channels on the remote, too. However, the Harmony 665 works via infrared (IR) only, so you can’t hide any of your entertainment center’s components, and this remote can’t be used to control smart-home devices.

Read our full Logitech Harmony 665 review .

Logitech Harmony Companion ($149)

Devices Controlled: 8 Favorite Channels: n/a Smart Home Controls: Yes

Similar to the Harmony Elite, the Harmony Companion can also control smart-home devices in addition to your entertainment center. However, the Companion lacks of a screen of any kind, so you’ll have to designate physical buttons to enable Watch TV mode, for instance. The Companion comes with the Harmony Hub, so you can not only hide all your AV components, but also let you use Alexa and Google Assistant to control your TV and more. We also like that it has a physical number pad—something the Harmony Elite lacks—so it's easier to jump to specific channels on your cable box.

Broadly defined, a universal remote is a device that can control all of your home entertainment devices — your TV, soundbar, streaming device, cable box, A/V receiver, and so on.

More importantly, the best universal remotes can be programmed to control multiple devices at once. Let's say you want to watch a show on your Roku device: You simply press a single button on your universal remote, and it will turn on your Roku streaming stick, turn on your TV and set it to the correct input, and turn on your soundbar or A/V receiver to the right settings.

Universal remotes have become less popular in recent years, as HDMI and CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) have been more widely adopted by TV makers. This technology allows the remote that comes with your TV to control more devices itself, which obviates the need for a third-party universal remote. Still, universal remotes can prove handy, especially if you have older components.

How to choose the best universal remote

If you've gotten this far, you know by now that truly good universal remotes aren't that common. Logitech's Harmony remotes were pretty much the only game in town, and work well, but now that they've been discontinued, you'll have to look elsewhere unless you can get them at a discount.

When it was available, the Harmony Elite, at the top end, cost around $250, and let you control everything you would want, and has a little touchscreen at the top that makes it easy to switch between watching, say, cable TV to your Fire TV stick to your gaming console. Below that was the Harmony Companion, which originally sold for around $149. It doesn't have a touchscreen, but we liked that it has a physical number pad at the bottom, which is better suited for those who like to punch in channel numbers. Both the Elite and the Companion have dedicated smart home controls, so you can dim the lights easily, and you can also use Logitech's app to control everything if you happen to lose your remote.

If you're looking for something a little different, the Caavo Control Center is an inventive universal remote that acts in many ways like a super-smart HDMI switcher. It also has its own universal voice search, so you can search across multiple devices and services for the program you want.

How we test the best universal remotes

To test universal remotes, we set them up in our home entertainment system, and connect them to several streaming devices (an Apple TV , Amazon Fire TV Cube , Roku Stick ) as well as a Dish TV receiver, and a soundbar .

We look to see how easy things are to set up — programming a universal remote is often the hardest part of any of these systems — and once everything is up and running, how quickly and accurately the remote can send commands to all of our devices.

We also take into consideration the feel of the remote in our hands, as well as the ease with which we can reach all the buttons.

The best remote tech jobs for 2023

The top five IT positions in demand now have some of the highest rates of allowing workers to work fully remote, according to a new report. Remote roles also affect pay.

teamwork / collaboration / group of remote workers meeting

Remote work is reshaping industries, allowing for greater employee work-life balance and flexibility while also enabling companies to consider a geographically borderless pool of talent.

The “Computer & IT” category was the top career category for fully remote jobs in 2022, with fully remote listings growing 24% year-over-year, according to job search site FlexJobs .

Employers like Twilio, HubSpot, and AnywhereWorks are a few examples of IT companies that have increased hiring for remote jobs, according to a FlexJobs spokesperson.

Online job search site Indeed recently published a list of the “best” remote jobs  available now. That list included technical support engineer, application developer, and software engineer positions.

Technical support engineers, with a national average salary of $67,326, were in the eighth spot in Indeed’s top 14 jobs report; application developer positions were in the 13th spot with an average annual salary of $80,761; and software engineer jobs landed in 14th place, with an annual average salary of $113,660.

While not strictly a tech job, project engineers also were also on the Indeed list, with an annual average salary of $74,169.

Top cybersecurity jobs include analysts, managers, engineers, and penetration and vulnerability testers. All but two of the top 10 cybersecurity jobs, on average, pay more than $100,000, according to jobs website CyberSeek .

Meanwhile, according to a new study from HR consultancy Remote , web developer jobs offer the best opportunity for remote work, with data scientists, software engineers, data analysts, and cybersecurity positions rounding out Remote’s top five list.

Remote analyzed the 40 most commonly advertised job roles on employer review site Glassdoor , as well as the percentage of listings for each that allowed employees to work outside the office. The study looked at job offerings in the US and UK.

In the US, web developers have the highest chance of working remotely, with nearly 37% of positions advertised as having that option, according to Remote. Web developers also can earn 31% more than the US industry average by working in a remote role.

remote job opportunities

IT industry association CompTIA publishes an IT salary calculator that includes salary estimates for 15 different jobs (early, mid and advanced career levels) and geographies (50 states plus DC and 400 metro markets). For example, a mid-career software developer could expect to earn a median salary of $122,780 in Denver, $99,880 in Des Moines or $98,540 in Duluth.

The top tech jobs available, according to CompTIA are:

  • Software developer/engineer (74,668 positions);
  • IT support specialist (17,376 positions);
  • Systems engineer (16,984 positions);
  • IT project manager (16,062 positions);
  • Network engineer (14,609).

percent of jobs listed as remote

The percentage of job postings listed as “remote”.

“With employees now demanding more flexibility, companies around the world have had to reconsider their business models to attract and retain top talent,” Remote stated in the study. “As a result, many sectors, job roles, and countries are rapidly embracing a future of remote work.”

A growing number of companies have instituted policies allowing any employee to work fully remote, including  Twitter ,  Meta  ( Facebook ),  Airbnb ,  3M ,  Atlassian ,  Lyft ,  SAP ,  Slack ,  Spotify , and VMware . Many are taking a cue from employees who want to work in a fully remote world, choosing to shutter offices and manage from a distance; other organizations have permanently closed offices that were used infrequently by a small number of employees.

comptia big industries for tech jobs

In terms of industries embracing remote work, in a list of 10 industries, IT was third, with 15.4% of all IT jobs in the US being fully remote. Telecommunications was also in the top 10, but offered only 9.4% fully remote positions, according to Remote.

The numbers from Remote’s study, however, were much lower than those from other research firms. Currently, 43% of knowledge workers, including web designers, system analysts and technical writers, can work fully remote, according to Gartner.

comptia big industries for tech jobs.2

Interest in remote work continues to rise, with 65% of people saying that fully remote work is their ideal arrangement, according to a survey by online job search site FlexJobs .

In its report, FlexJobs compared the number of completely remote jobs posted in January 2022 to December 2022 across 50 career categories in its database. Each of the categories increased at least 20% during that period.

“As our latest list of growing remote careers demonstrates, the range of remote work continues to span various industries, career levels, and roles — creating many opportunities for workers,” Toni Frana, career services manager at FlexJobs, said in a statement. “We anticipate this trend to continue well into the future as more employers embrace permanent remote workplaces.”

FlexJobs’ survey found most respondents chose flexibility over a bump in pay. In fact, 63% of the 4,000 respondents said they would choose better work-life balance over higher pay.

Job seekers are also heavily invested in keeping or obtaining a remote or hybrid job, according to FlexJobs. Eighty-seven percent of respondents indicated a remote or  hybrid job  would (or already has) improved their work-life balance. Only 3% said they’re looking to go back to the office 100% of the time.

Additionally, FlexJobs found:

  • 65% prefer a  100% remote work  arrangement;
  • 32% would prefer a hybrid workplace;
  • 57% ssaid they would look for a new job if they couldn’t continue to work remotely.
