The Case Study of Vanitas: Who is Naenia?

Naenia stands as Vanitas and Noe's most dangerous adversary. Here's what fans need to know about the origin of this sinister character.

Warning: This contains spoilers for The Case Study of Vanitas

The corruption of true names and the ringleader of the Parade of Charlatan is not Vanitas, Vampire of the Blue Moon, like everyone believes. That honor goes to Naenia, a shadowy figure who, for reasons unknown, desires nothing more than to defile the true names of vampires. This boogeyman figure serves as the main antagonist in The Case Study of Vanitas.

She hunts down vampires and haunt them, torturing them with visions, fears, and nightmares, until they give her their true name. Naenia takes their name and corrupts it, turning them into a curse bearer, a violent, bloodthirsty creature who will stop at nothing in order to kill everyone around them, similar to an akuma in D. Gray Man . She had followed Lord Ruthven during the war with the humans, and stalked Chloe d'Apchier after she and Jeanne parted ways. She had successfully tortured the true name out of Amelia Ruth, Louis de Sade, but Jean-Jaques gave his to her willingly in order to become stronger. Most of Naenia's victims die at the hands of a Bourreau, putting them out of their misery and keeping other safe. It is only with the appearance of a human called Vanitas that Naenia's victims have some form of hope.

Naenia, Leader of the Parade of Charlatan

Naenia's appearance as being of pure shadow with red eyes and a twisted opaque smile match her monstrosity perfectly. She appears to have the ability to appear anywhere and interact with different people at the same time. Only the golden claws and bracelet on her right hand give a clue to Naenia's true identity Queen Faustina, the first vampire of the Crimson Moon .

Not much is known about the vampire queen other than her incredible strength. Her power is so immense that no vampire of the crimson moon can disobey her. The only reason she is not currently ruling Altus is because she somehow became a curse bearer. Whether that was directly because of the Vampire of the Blue Moon or not, it seemed Queen Faustina could tell she was succumbing and so ordered two of her retainers, the Beastia Loki Oriflamme and Veronica de Sade, to kill her. The first vampire's strength was too great, and the Beastias failed, the two of them only being able to destroy Faustina's body . Her blackened, rotting corpse is kept in her room, tucked in bed, and the queen's current condition is kept under wraps by the vampire senate, specifically Lord Ruthven.

RELATED: The Controversial Arc That Anime Fans Love to Hate

Even with her body decimated, Faustina became a curse bearer anyway. Her malnomen bears the name Naenia, the one and only of its kind. While Noe has fought her many times, Naenia has only ever been damaged by Chloe d'Apchier. Chloe already hated Naenia for stalking her for years, but it was only when Naenia took Jean-Jaques true name that Chloe decided to kill her. Chloe finished a machine called the Alteration Device based on her family's research of the World Formula in order to solidify Naenia's existence, to bring that shadow into the light. She succeeded, but by giving Naenia a physical body, Chloe accidently reminded Naenia of her true idenity as the vampire queen.

Queen Faustina, Awoken

Once awoken, Naenia took back Faustina's appearance which bears a startling similarity to Luna, the Vampire of the Blue Moon. They share inverted colors, a bit like Vanitas and Noe, and the same long hair. The connection between the two is unknown as well as how Faustina became a curse bearer. Once the Alteration Device was turned off, Faustina's visage faded away into the darkness, and Naenia laughed, leaving to go find more true names.

With her origins and goals unknown, Naenia works as the villain the viewers don't see, almost like Michael Myers in her ability to appear and disappear. She could be anywhere at any moment, and currently there is no way to defeat her. Vanitas has not tried to heal Queen Faustina's malnomen either because he can't or he doesn't want to. He may only be able to heal her by finding her physical body, like with the kidnapped vampire in Dr. Moreau's lab, and so he does not have access to heal her.

Vanitas is aware that the queen is being hidden away by the senate and so maybe biding his time before he defeats Naenia completely, another anticipated showdown to look forward to in The Case Study of Vanitas.

English Dub Review: The Case Study of Vanitas “Where Death Slumbers”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Vanitas and Noe meet with Lord Riven and discuss their next move. Noe is surprised to learn that Luca is a Grand Duke, while Vanitas gets them kicked back into the human world when he offends the vampires by asking to examine their Queen.

Once returned to the human realm, they learn that vampires have been going missing and go in search of the group responsible’s hidden base. They don’t find it, but Vanitas already knows where it is, and sneaks out by himself to go after the church’s anti-vampire unit. Luckily, Noe tags along with him, because it’s going to take both of them to make it out alive.

Last week’s episode of Vanitas was all romance focused and didn’t fare too well in my review. For the eighth episode this week, the show switches things up and returns to the action of hunting for vampire hunters when Vanitas and Noe return to the human realm. It’s certainly not a great episode, but it’s definitely a lot more interesting than the previous one.

The opening scene isn’t a promising start, as Vanitas does his usual annoying Vanitas thing and takes things too far in his desire to examine the Queen. It’s a little hard to tell if it’s just serial sarcasm or if he’s genuinely unhinged, but it’s probably a combination of both. I’m less surprised about Vanitas getting them booted from the realm and more interested in the reveal that Luca is the Grand Duke, but we don’t get to spend much time processing that before the series kicks its next storyline into gear.

Back in the human world, more vampires have been going missing and Noe, Vanitas, and their associates are eager to put a stop to it. Or are they? The group goes into some underground catacombs that turns out to be nothing more than a tourist trap. It’s kind of pointless, and especially so because it turns out that Vanitas knew where they should’ve been going all along. Maybe some will enjoy the chaotic nature of having a main character like Vanitas, but I am not among them.

He and Noe eventually break into a church and Noe comments that it seems like Vanitas already knows who’s responsible for the kidnappings and where to find them. He confronts Vanitas about it, and wouldn’t ya know it, Vanitas just ignores him and spews some unrelated bullshit. It’s frustrating for Noe, but also as a viewer. I did enjoy it a bit more once the two of them ran into a paladin named Roland. He seems like a naive young worshipper at first, but manages to trick Vanitas into a trap and then goes on the attack against Noe in the cliffhanger ending.

Where Death Slumbers  is a solid improvement over last week’s episode for sure, but there’s still plenty I would’ve liked the show to have done differently. Pacing, for one thing. If we could’ve gotten into the final catacombs more quickly instead of spending time on false alarms and Vanitas’s queen fetish, maybe more answers would’ve been found. But then again, the show is perfectly content to let Vanitas keep all his secrets to himself… for now, at least.

She is the mysterious ethereal entity responsible for infecting curse-bearing Vampires with Malnomen in a hunt for their True Names . [1] She is a member of Charlatan , who help facilitate her creation of curse-bearers to yet unclear ends. [2] As her goal and very existence is in direct opposition to that of Vanitas and Noé , who fight to cure curse-bearers, she and they remain in constant conflict for the duration of the series.

Naenia's true identity is Naenia, She Who Harbors Death ( 死を囲うもの ( ネーニア ) , Shi wo Kakou Mono ― Nēnia ), the Malnomen of the first Vampire of the Crimson Moon, Queen Faustina . The circumstances surrounding the Queen's transformation into a curse-bearer and the nature of her Malnomen remain unknown, aside from the fact that it―that is, she as Naenia is the prevalent source behind the spreading of Malnomen among Vampires. Appearance [ ]

Naenia is a shadowy entity with glowing eyes, one of which is cracked beyond repair with fractures. Her mouth is curved in a thin smile and her body is dark, wavering, and unstable, splattered with particles of white energy.

When her existence is stabilized, Naenia becomes a young woman with large, round eyes and long white hair.

Personality [ ]

Naenia is a malicious entity with no regard for the sanity or safety of those around her. She appears to be single-mindedly pursuing her goal of hunting for true names.

Powers and Abilities [ ]

  • Mind Manipulation - Naenia can enter a vampire's mind, reading through their memories to convince them to give her their true names. In order to do this, Naenia can show both vampires and humans vivid visual and auditory hallucinations of their worst fears and greatest desires.
  • True Name Alteration - Naenia is capable of altering the true names of other Vampires, thus afflicting them with some form of Malnomen.

Relationships [ ]

Noé archiviste [ ].

Naenia sees Noé as a powerful but ultimately beatable plaything. Noé in turn despises Naenia for her torment and possession of Louis, which led to his death.

Amelia Ruth [ ]

Coming soon!

Thomas Berneux [ ]

Naenia was responsible for the corruption of Thomas Berneux and his transformation into the Malnomen Loup Garou. Naenia influenced his mind towards destruction, and can be assumed to have asked him for his true name, after which she altered his state of being. As a member of Charlatan, he was one of the many victims she encountered, and therefore, not notable to her.

Louis de Sade [ ]

Chloé d'apchier [ ].

Naenia sees Chloé as a plaything and a tool. She initially believes that she has control over Chloé, but it is revealed that Chloé was merely using Naenia in order to hopefully trap and murder her, as revenge for messing with Jean-Jacques. This trap fails and Naenia escapes Chloé’s grasp.
