A step-by-step guide on how to write the perfect Vet Tech cover letter.

Start with your details and an introduction.

Address your letter..

It is best to address your cover letter directly to the hiring manager, recruiter, or whoever posted the job notice. Avoid using generic greetings such as "To whom it may concern" and always use the relevant title followed by the person's last name, such as "Dear Ms. Winslow."

Write an introduction.

In the opening paragraph of your cover letter, you should explain why you are writing and specifically mention the job title you are applying for. Vet Techs: How to Write a Cover Letter

We have recently been reviewing lots of resumes at our clinic. Many resumes come with no cover letter. I like a cover letter because it tells a little more about the person that is applying and what they are looking for, rather than just the list of qualifications on the resume.

The cover letter will be the first thing the hiring company will see about you. Candidates with a good cover letter will be more likely to get an interview. Below I have included a sample cover letter that you may use as a template (you can plug in your own information and skills) or use as a general idea to create your own.

ALWAYS check for spelling errors or have someone review your resume prior to sending. In addition, if you are applying to multiple places, make sure to change the information for each place. I have received resumes that had other practice names on there, and the lack of attention to details such as this can be a turn-off for employers.

There are a few main points to include:

• Why you are interested and seeking the position
• BRIEF history of your involvement in veterinary medicine/schooling
• Skill set list
• Contact information

It is used by veterinary students when they are applying for externships, internships or residencies or for positions in academia. Research fellowships or scholarship applications also frequently require CVs. Unlike a resume, there is no page limit for CVs.

Writing a cover letter.

A cover letter must accompany every letter or CV you send out. A cover letter is NOT a letter that simply refers the reader to the enclosed letter. Like the resume, it should be tailored to the position you are applying for. A cover letter is your opportunity to introduce yourself, state your objective and highlight aspects of your qualifications that speak to your fit for the position you are applying to. Cover letters are often scrutinized as samples of written communication. A well-written cover letter will encourage the reader to take a serious look at your resume; conversely a poorly written cover letter can doom your job prospects even if you are potentially a great fit for the job.
