Aishwarya R Dhanush shows sparks of brilliance in her directorial debut, and marks herself as a name to look out for in Tamil cinema.

Story: School student Ram (Dhanush) falls in love with Janani (Shruti), who is also a Class XII student, and woos her through college. When her family decides to move to the US, she burns her passport because she can’t bear to live without Ram. They get married finally, but will they live happily ever after? Movie Review: Dhanush is one of those rare actors in Indian cinema who is at home playing a school student and also a businessman battling his inner demons (as he does in “3”) or a young salesman searching for his bike (in “Polladhavan”) or a uneducated rustic who only knows how to breed and fight roosters (in “Aadukalam”, which fetched him his first national award for acting). An actor at the peak of his craft, he doesn’t break a sweat while portraying the two extremes of Ram, though his performance as a schoolboy in love is more entertaining and watchable than the changeover into a married man in the second half.

Shruti Haasan does a very good job as a schoolgirl, with her shy countenance and demure looks. Though dialogue delivery lets her down in some scenes, her work in “3” is a good example of her growing maturity as an actor in her second performance in Tamil after “7 Aum Arivu”. Sivakarthikeyan is a roar, and keeps the laughs coming in the first half. He is sorely missed in the second half when the screenplay takes a turn for the serious. Sunder Ramu as Senthil, a friend of Ram, has sadly nothing new to offer, his role being very similar to the one he played in “Mayakkan Enna”. Veterans Prabhu, Bhanupriya and Rohini are also sadly underused, though they shine in the limited scope offered to them. Composer Anirudh shows that there is more to him beyond “Kolaveri”, which unfortunately will be the main reason to drag the audiences into the theatres. “Kannazhaga” (Shruti and Dhanush) and “Po nee po” (Mohit Chauhan and Anirudh) are sure to find repeat listeners among the discernable audiences.

Aishwarya R Dhanush shows sparks of brilliance in her directorial debut, and marks herself as a name to look out for in Tamil cinema. She establishes her credentials in the first scene itself, when she shows people grieving over a dead body (a rarity in Tamil cinema), and displays a commendable grasp over the medium. Though uneven in her treatment of a sensitive subject (which can be easily attributed to lack of experience), she comes out with a fairly engaging movie, though it does portray shades of characters seen in recent Tamil movies. Besides the opening scenes, a couple of others are worth a mention – Dhanush’s interaction with his father (played by Prabhu) and the way Rohini examines her daughter (Shruti) the first time she meets her after her marriage.

What is irking is the way Janani’s kid sister, who we are told is born with a hearing impairment, suddenly starts speaking, and the “message ending” after a slightly tedious second half. Why this kolaveri?

3 (U) 30/Mar/2012 Romance, Comedy 145minutes

3

Critics Review

3 is sincere and refreshing.

There are certain moments in 3 that defy logic at times, and sentiment rules the roost, but Aishwarya Dhanush has chosen to present a take on romance that is appealing in its freshness. The lead actors help as well. Her little thriller-twist aside, 3 is a movie that is an ode to romance, above all else. (more)

An impressive achievement both in writing and direction, the film is full of fine nuances and sharp observations that stay with you. Comedy and romance are beautifully weaved into the story in a realistic manner. Songs by Anirudh are a major plus for the film and they go with the flow of the story. Good performances, slower narration

Dhanush- Need we say anything on this talented artist? He is in a different higher league and can sail across any role. Having said that, we cannot rule out the hangover of Mayakkam Enna in this film. For Shruthi who gets a meaty role in 3 manages to dish out a neat performance although struggling hard in the heavy duty emotional scenes. As regards the technical department, cinematographer Velraj and editor Kola Bhaskar have worked as per the dictates of the film. The difference in looks, costumes and body language in the different age group of Dhanush and Shruthi is well delineated. (more)

3 Movie Review

Behind the Movie 3: The ‘Kolaveri Di’ rage of Dhanush and Shruti Hasan has finally released yesterday making this as directorial debut of Aishwarya Dhanush. Not to mention in special, Tamil directors always experiment with different storylines and ‘3’ is going to run on similar lines. Let us see, how captivating is this flick?

In the Movie 3: Start it from the first phase or young days of Ram, a wealthy son of a sweet mother (Bhanu Priya) who is studying Intermediate will instantly fall in love with middle class school girl Janani (Shruthi Hasan). In minimum time, the girl too is impressed and love blossoms. As usual when parents oppose, they get married in a Pub very next moment after becoming majors. Now, both of them enter into second phase of life which steers through different emotions leading to experience of sudden change in Ram’s behavior. Thus, he is diagnosed for ‘Psychological Bi-Polar Disorder’ with variant moods. As Janani tolerates every move of Ram, he is already into Third phase of life to take a decision on relieving his wife from his illness. What is that decision forms the climax.

Values & Out of the Movie 3: To mention in specific, the very idea of traversing through 3 stages of a human being’s life is itself innovative. Director Aishwarya Dhanush’s holding of first and second stages is a commendable work while third goes out of her control. Had she focused more on screenplay and execution of second half, ‘3’ would have easily come out with ‘3 Cheers’ kind of verdict. Instead the darker emotions exposed in second half failed to connect with Telugu audience. There is odd mix of Thriller cum Tragic kind of emotional experience for viewers with excessive melodrama taking the driver’s seat. There will be a complete contrast in genre of first and second halves. Unlike Dhanush, it is not easy for regular viewers to travel through such extreme state of minds. Cinematography by Vel Raja is good while editing by Kola Bhaskar definitely needed a trimming of second half and to mention especially in last minutes of climax. Music by Anirudh is wonderful while background is much more delighting. Unfortunately, ‘Kolaveri Di’ picturization will live you with inadequately weak comments. Great to see a producer like Natti Kumar, betting on odd concept!

Performance wise Dhanush lived marvelously as Ram on the screen. He explored the infinitesimal of expressions needed to elevate Ram and his sufferings. Just awesome is the word to describe his level as an artist. Thanks to Shruthi who finally proves to be an artist of some matter. Although flooded away by excellence of Dhanush, even Shruthi needs to be praised for her weepy and sorrowful scenes. Of the others, Bhanu Priya, Rohini and Prabhu are up to their tasks.

Films like ‘3’ will be well suitable for winning the awards. When it comes to winning of Box Office, absolutely there is no such broad heart for patronage in Telugu land due to missing of commercial values. Instead, people will recognize how good an actor like Dhanush is and how wise he selects the films. On the other side, Aishwarya Dhanush will get mixed evaluations. However, her way of dealing the first half colorfully with cheerful youth elements keeping us entertained is a positive side. Coming to second half…it’s a thorough disappointment with indigestive slow paced treatment missing in all the aspects. Good intentions of not to introduce any comedy elements in second half in order not hinder the depth of emotions turned fatal. In overall, ‘3’ ends on a serious tragic note burdening the patrons much more.

Cinejosh Verdict of the Movie 3: Sorry…we are not as artistic as Tamil hearts!

10 years later, Dhanush’s 3 shocks the trade by setting box office on fire in Telugu states

The telugu version of dhanush's 2012 movie 3 was re-released in theatres to a rousing reception on the occasion of filmmaker kasthuri raja's birthday..

dhanush 3 movie review

The audience’s response to the box office is becoming increasingly unpredictable. At a time when brand new movies with big star cast face trouble bringing in decent footfalls, old movies seem to be setting cash registers ringing without breaking a sweat. The Telugu version of Dhanush’s 2012 movie 3 was re-released in theatres today on the occasion of Dhanush’s father, filmmaker Kasthuri Raja’s birthday, and it has surprised trade pundits.

Kasthuri Raja production 3 marked the directorial debut of Aishwarya Rajinikanth . The film generated massive hype worldwide before its release, thanks to the sensational “Why This Kolaveri Di” number. After the song was leaked before its official release, it went viral online, putting Anirudh Ravichander on the map. However, the response that the movie got at the box office didn’t match the success of “Why This Kolaveri Di.” At the time, 3 was said to have tanked at the box office. The film’s Telugu version couldn’t maintain a steady run even during its opening weekend.

Dhanush and Shruti Haasan have come together for the movie ‘3’ and this movie has been directed by Rajinikanth’s daughter Aishwarya Dhanush. The movie has been produced by Natti Kumar. Let us see how the movie stacks up

Ram (Dhanush) is the darling son of Bhanupriya and Prabhu. He falls in love at a very young age with Janani ( Shruti ) and this is opposed vehemently by their parents. But in unexpected circumstances, they marry each other. After marriage, as they start building a life together, fate deals a cruel blow and the story takes unexpected twists. Ram is afflicted with Bipolar Disorder and he suffers from extreme mood swings. As Ram and Janani battle this disease, will they be able to set their lives in order? Will Ram be cured of his disease?

Plus Points :

The movie has had good exposure due to the runaway success of the ‘Kolaveri’ song and this has guaranteed a lot of interest in the film. Dhanush has portrayed two very different roles in this movie and his performance is good. Shruti Haasan looks good and she has done a good job.

The first half of the movie is slightly better when compared to the second half. ‘Kannulada’ and ‘Pove Po’ have been shot well and they are good to listen to.

Minus Points : The story and the treatment will not appeal to Telugu film lovers at all. The first scene of the film itself sends a rude shock to the viewer and its a rapid downhill ride from there. Though Dhanush has performed well, it is tough for our people to accept him as a hero. Shruti Haasan keeps weeping throughout the film and this is downright depressing to watch.

There are many loopholes in the screenplay and narration is poor. There is absolutely zero entertainment in the movie for casual movie lovers and viewers end up getting frustrated. There is no synchronization between the first half and the second half.

Technical Aspects :

Editing is atrocious and that is a major culprit. Dialogues are quite poor. Cinematography is decent. Production values are good. Aishwarya Dhanush fails to make an impression with her direction skills and there is no conviction in her narration.

If you are a casual movie lover looking for some entertainment, stay away from ‘3’. The movie has absolutely nothing for you. If you are a hardcore fan of Tamil tragedy cinemas, you can try and risk a watch.

3 - Movie Review

Aishwarya Dhanush's 3 is an intense-romantic drama, which is youthful at core. It can also be termed as an urban-centric film that chronicles a couple's three stages of being-in-love. The debutant director has etched a story - with limited characters - keeping the new-age sensibilities in mind. She has also ensured to deliver what the modern-day men love to see on-screen.

The movie 3 begins on a death note and instantly tells the audience that the movie is not all about regular affair, and there is something serious about it. Within a couple of minutes, a flashback takes us to a lively atmosphere, where Ram (Dhanush) is seen dressing up to go to college. On the rainy day, he leaves the house on his bike and sees a girl named Janani (Shruti Hassan) repairing her cycle in the middle of the traffic. It does not take much-time for him to fall in love, which makes to do the things what every boy does in the initial stage. In no time, their love blossoms and after facing some minor hurdles, Ram-Janani ties the knot.

The first half of 3 goes like a usual love story, yet giving hints that the story will take a serious turn in the next half. In the second half, the tale takes a shocking twist, where it is revealed that Ram is suffering from Bipolar Disorder, a psychological disease. Then, its subject focuses on his struggling to come out of the sufferings. The remaining part is advised to watch on-screen.

Aishwarya Dhanush's way of narration and maintaining the suspense till the end are impressive. She succeeds in the first half by keeping the story lively with some wonderfully written one-liners. The natural-progress of the love tale between the lead stars is interesting. But in the second half, she seems to have lost the grip on the script, as it is too dragging at parts. The filmmaker has convinced the two phases of the film 3 , but the last stage somewhat fails to impress the viewers.

Dhanush wins the heart with his impeccable acting. He reminds his looks of Thulluvadho Ilamai as a young boy in the first half and with his intense side of a mature man in the second. His performance, especially in the climax scene and its penultimate sequence are heart-wrenching. His co-star Shruti Hassan has equally competed with him when it comes to performance. In fact, she has tried to give a natural touch to her role, thereby avoiding overacting. Other actors like Prabhu, Bhanu Priya, Siva Karthikeyan have done justice to their roles.

Technically, the songs of 3 does not require any introduction, as the audio of the film has become a massive hit. Especially, the track, 'Kolaveri di...' not only drew the nation's attention but also our neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Cinematographer Velraj's work is praise worthy, but Kota Bhaskar's editing is not up to mark. The editor could have easily reduced the movie by at least 10-12 minutes, as the film gets boring at parts.

Verdict: On the whole, 3 has a engaging tale backed by wonderful performances of Dhanush and Shruti Hassan. The film gets 60 out of 100.
