The Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology
Welcome to the Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology
The IPPP was founded in 1999 as the UK’s national centre for particle phenomenology, researching the properties and behaviour of the most fundamental building blocks of nature. Since then, we have grown to become one of the largest particle phenomenology groups in the world. Our research sits at the interface between theoretical particle physics and experiments ranging from particle colliders to gravitational wave detectors. We host an extensive programme of workshops and conferences for the international particle physics community, helping to shape the future of particle physics in the UK. Promoting public understanding of fundamental physics is also central to the IPPP’s goals, particularly with outreach to schools and teachers as well as online content.

Condensed Matter Physics is one of the largest, most diverse and dynamic fields in modern physics, encompassing all aspects of the solid and liquids states of matter. This breadth is reflected in the research undertaken at Durham which spans a wide range of subjects from light emitting polymers and solar cell materials to nanoscale magnetics. Program Description
The Medical Physics Graduate Program is an interdisciplinary program sponsored by five departments: radiology, radiation oncology, physics, biomedical engineering, and occupational and environmental safety (health physics). Four academic tracks are offered: diagnostic imaging physics, radiation oncology physics, nuclear medicine physics, and health physics. There are currently 51 faculty members associated with the program, and many of these are internationally recognized experts in their fields of study.
The program has available one of the best medical centers in the United States, with outstanding facilities in radiology and radiation oncology for the clinical training elements of the programs. The program has 5,000 square feet of dedicated educational space in the Hock Plaza Building and access to state-of-the-art imaging and radiation therapy equipment in the clinical departments.
Existing equipment and facilities include:
- radiation oncology equipment for 3-D treatment planning, image guided therapy, and intensity modulated radiation therapy;
- radiation protection lab equipment (whole body counter, high resolution germanium gamma detector, liquid scintillation counter);
- dedicated equipment for radiation dosimetry;
- nuclear medicine cameras and scanners in PET and SPECT;
- digital imaging laboratories with dedicated equipment for physics and clinical research in digital radiography and CT;
- the Ravin Advanced Imaging Laboratories;
- the Center for In Vivo Microscopy;
- laboratories for monoclonal antibody imaging and therapy;
- excellent resources for MRI imaging (including a research MR scanner, the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center, and the Center for Advanced Magnetic Resonance Development); and
- ultrasound laboratories in biomedical engineering.
The program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP).

Centre for Particle Theory
The Centre for Particle Theory has won an international reputation for its research. It unites the theoretical particle physics groups in the Physics and Maths Departments.
Strategic Importance and Added Value value
The Centre for Particle Theory is one of the largest particle theory groups within the UK (and larger than many departments in Durham). It covers nearly the whole spectrum of modern particle theory research.

Graduate Studies
How to get to Durham
Durham is about 30 min. by car south of Newcastle upon Tyne. Find the A1 and leave it at exit Durham.
There are bus connections to Durham or Newcastle from most major cities in England.
The Intercity East-Coast line links Durham with London King's Cross and Edinburgh. Most Intercity trains stop in Durham. Otherwise you have to take a local train or taxi from Newcastle Central station. Timetable information is available from National Rail . Here is a link to help you finding your way through the London Underground .
Newcastle Airport has regular flights to and from Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Oslo, Paris and Stavanger as well as from London and other UK cities. To get to Durham take either the Metro which takes you to the Central station in Newcastle for about £5.70 then a train for about £6, or take a taxi to Durham which is about £60.
There are ferry connection from Newcastle to Bergen, Esbjerg, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Oslo and Stavanger during summer. The crossing takes about 24hrs. Contact DFDS Scandinavian Seaways . The ferries arrive in Newcastle. There is a bus service to the central station. Trains to Durham run with a frequncy of more than 1 per hour.
