The Goals of Campus Discipline

This essay will be published in the forthcoming book Academic Ethics Today: Problems, Policies, and Prospects for University Life , ed. Steven M. Cahn (Rowman & Littlefield, 2022). This collection of thirty-one new essays will focus on ethical questions raised by institutional policies of colleges and universities. Considering the system of student discipline in its broadest application, ranging from physical or sexual assault to stolen textbooks and offensive graffiti, it is helpful to identify three distinct goals that a system of campus discipline seeks to achieve. In both practice and theory they are separable yet closely related. Measures that advance one of the three are likely to contribute to the others as well.

To Prevent Exploitation and Harm

The first goal of a system of student discipline is to prevent exploitation and harm to students . Policies and procedures related to student conduct should protect students so far as is reasonably possible from others who would prey on their vulnerability if given the opportunity. This is the foundation for rules prohibiting many kinds of serious misconduct such as theft, physical violence, sexual assault, verbal harassment and denigration, and sale of mind-altering drugs. Academic dishonesty is also a form of exploitation. A student who copies another’s work not only deprives the source of proper credit for her work but also undermines the essential but fragile system of academic evaluation in the institution. By enacting and enforcing policies against exploitation and harm, the university seeks to protect students against others’ malevolence.

What is the moral ground for a university’s concern with preventing harm? No more and no less than our fundamental obligation to protect others from injury, especially in circumstances in which another is vulnerable to harm that could be averted by one’s words and actions. Every ethical system recognizes this basic duty to prevent harm, whether it then traces the ultimate ground of this obligation to a Kantian conception of autonomy and universalizability , an Aristotelian concept of virtuous habits forming a virtuous character, a theological concept of the respect due to all created persons, or a morality based on the weighing of good and bad consequences.

Those who govern an institution such as a university have the same duty to protect others that applies to them as individuals. But their official capacity to set policies and direct practices on campus greatly enlarges the consequences of their actions and therefore their responsibility to act. Of course, it is impossible to prevent all harmful and hurtful acts committed by members of an academic community or of any other community. But a carefully framed and rigorously enforced policy regarding physical assault, for example, may deter many attacks that would have occurred under circumstances of institutional laxness and inattention.

The primary goal of campus rules of conduct is to prevent students from harming fellow students. The reason is not that students are more prone to misconduct than outsiders. Indeed, they are surely less likely to injure each other intentionally than are a random collection of individuals, since their shared status as students contributes to a sense of common purpose and their shared participation in campus life makes them something more than strangers to each other. Only students, however, are directly answerable to the institutional code of conduct. Campus disciplinary officers can impose potent disincentives to deter students from harming others and a range of sanctions if they do. Their authority over outsiders is far more limited.

Note the overlap, but also a great deal of difference, between what is legitimately prohibited in a campus environment and what is prohibited by law. Actions liable to criminal prosecution—rape, assault, theft, embezzlement—are not the primary focus of a university disciplinary code. When these crimes occur on campus, administrators must cooperate with local authorities in conducting an appropriate investigation. Universities should remind students that living on campus is not living outside the law. Students gain no immunity from criminal law and surrender none of the protections of those charged with breaking the law.

Prevention of crime should be a priority, all the same, in other aspects of the life of a university. Building design, campus lighting and landscaping, student transportation options, and the work of campus safety officers can greatly enhance the safety of students and reduce the incidence of violent crime. This is not the domain of disciplinary codes but an important contribution to their effectiveness.

Students are especially vulnerable to some sorts of harm that fall outside—or just at the borders of—the criminal code. The possibility that one’s work will be stolen and used dishonestly, for example, is an inherent risk in any academic enterprise. Undergraduates, graduate students, and established researchers sometimes succumb to this temptation. Some institutions, including many elite undergraduate colleges and the nation’s military academies, seek to combat plagiarism through promulgation of an honor code to which all students must subscribe. Others disseminate detailed guidelines that distinguish legitimate from illegitimate borrowing in academic research and writing. Studies that I reviewed in writing my book on student conduct indicated that neither system was, in general, more effective than the other. A newly drafted honor code, however, seems to be less effective than one that has long been part of campus culture.

Consider too the issue of acquaintance rape. It is by no means unique to university communities, but the close personal relationships and powerful peer pressures that obtain in college, together with ready availability of alcohol, heighten the danger of such assault. Whenever one person is induced to engage in sexual activity through coercion or threats, a sexual assault has occurred. But campus cultures too often discount the testimony of victims and give too much credence to an assailant’s assertion that the act was entirely consensual.

The rules for responding to allegations of sexual harassment in educational settings have become a contentious issue as three U.S. administrations sought to interpret the requirements of Title IX of the Higher Education Act, which guarantees equal treatment and protection against harassment. In brief, the Department of Education under President Obama issued guidelines for investigating and adjudicating allegations of abuse that were intended to uphold victims’ rights and remove impractical evidence requirements, but under President Trump new guidelines were issued that set a higher standard for evidence of wrongdoing and allowed alleged perpetrators to question anyone testifying against them. Under President Biden, as a major policy review moves forward, the last requirement was revoked in August 2021. Universities will no longer be required to allow the accused to cross-examine the complainant, and more extensive revisions are expected soon.

In many cases of plagiarism and acquaintance rape, no laws have been broken, so victims cannot call on the police or the courts to come to their assistance. Copyright laws are not intended to apply to unpublished work by students. Criminal penalties for rape are severe, but the circumstances of acquaintance rape make it difficult for the victim to prove that an assault has occurred and easy for the guilty to escape punishment. Institutions have a special obligation to address the issues of cheating and sexual assault because there is little likelihood of legal redress for these harms imposed by some students on other students.

The same is true of the prevention of alcohol abuse and illegal drug use. No academic community can hope to be entirely free from such practices, which are widespread on campus and off. But the intense social pressures that bear on students in a campus setting need to be balanced by clear and firm campus rules, backed by effective measures of enforcement and consistent penalties when violated.

The aim of averting harm is inevitably to a certain extent paternalistic. The university no longer claims to be a moral arbiter standing in loco parentis , an institutional chaperone guiding young men and women on the path of virtue. With rare exceptions, no institution today wants to reclaim this role, and in any case, students would not tolerate it. The college’s concern, however, is not limited to protecting students against harm done to them by others. It extends also to protection of students against themselves, antiquated and condescending as that phrase may sound today.

The harm of drug and alcohol abuse is suffered primarily by the individual who engages in such behaviors, not inflicted on others. All the same, it is a serious form of harm and a legitimate concern of a university, not merely because it is likely to be a contributing factor in other graver harms, such as physical injury and, especially in the case of alcohol, sexual assault. Diminished capacity for academic work and for responsible behavior due to such substance abuse is itself a harm to the individual and to others that the institution should seek to prevent.

An institution places itself in a position very similar to that of a parent in saying to students: We seek to protect you from grave harm, even when you bring it upon yourself and would suffer it willingly. The goal of disciplinary rules in this instance is to deter students from acting in a way that amounts to an assault against themselves and a diminishment of their future prospects. In my study of student discipline I suggested, with tongue in cheek, that institutions that want to disavow their role in loco parentis as a vestige of the distant past might adopt a change to the metaphor. Consider the difference between advice given by a parent and that offered by a grandparent, for example, which is likely to be less directive and more empathetic. Or think about how one might intervene to dissuade a niece or nephew from making foolish choices, knowing that one cannot directly tell them how to behave but can expect them to consider one’s counsel seriously. Perhaps today the university should stand in loco avi (in place of a grandfather), then, or in loco avunculi (in place of an uncle). Although not as familiar as the parental variant, these Latin phrases may be more appropriate.

So much for prevention of harm. To acknowledge this first goal and no others, however, would be to confuse the function of the entire system of student discipline with that of a campus security department. Colleges and universities also pursue two additional goals no less important to the life of the institution.

To Promote an Atmosphere of Dialogue and Debate

A second essential goal of student conduct rules is to sustain an environment conducive to free discussion and mutual learning. The campus is not merely a place where students can go about their lives and studies relatively free from fear of assault and exploitation. It is also characterized by free and open exchange of ideas, arguments, and ideologies. A university is a place for vigorous debate of issues important to students and their communities, where ruling orthodoxies confront new evidence and new interpretations. Even one’s most cherished beliefs and ideals are open to challenge and possible revision in a healthy academic environment.

The moral ground of this second purpose is different from that underlying the first, but it too is a principle widely embraced: A healthy community grants its members as broad a range of personal and political freedom as is consistent with respect for the rights and the liberties of others. Although similar ideals of religious and intellectual freedom motivated the founding of the United States, they have frequently been compromised because of the pressures of social conformity. From their inception, universities have held themselves up as beacons for a broader vision of freedom. Yet there is a continual struggle on many campuses between the ideal of free and open discourse and the tendency of institutions to adopt and enforce an official ideological vision.

Cultural critics on the political right make this point frequently and stridently. They allege that universities pay only lip service to academic freedom and open dialogue while imposing a stultifying intellectual orthodoxy. Instructors who venerate Marx and Foucault and scorn Friedman and Hayek, they claim, force-feed students a diet of socialism, secularism, and radical feminism. Conservative voices are silenced or scorned.

Are these allegations accurate? Surveys of the political leanings of college and university faculty do indeed show a tilt to the left but not an absence of voices on the right. In a 2006 survey, 44% of faculty respondents identified as liberal, 46% as moderate, and 9% as conservative. Periodic surveys of undergraduate faculty conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA show, over recent decades, greater numbers calling themselves “liberal” and “far left” than “conservative” and “far right.” In the 1990s, the largest number selected “moderate/middle of the road,” followed by a shift to the left and then, in the most recent surveys, a shift back to the center. One notable finding in 2016–2017 was a substantial increase in those choosing “encouraging students to think and act critically” as an important priority.

Allegations of liberal bias also highlight campus agitation against controversial speakers. In 2016 conservative watchdog groups counted forty-three incidents in which students and faculty demanded “disinvitation” of speakers, most of them identified with the political right. But only half these efforts succeeded. Moreover, according to a nonpolitical organization, by 2018 the number of such incidents had dropped to just nine, five of them successful. The organization also noted that, where twenty-eight faculty members had been dismissed or demoted in 2017 for inappropriate political speech, that number dropped to just eight in 2018, four of them targeted by conservatives and three by liberals.

Conservative perceptions of a liberal stranglehold on campus are unfounded. And yet the right’s critique of campus culture serves as an important reminder that free and open discourse requires active monitoring and vigilant defense. On every campus, some factions seek from time to time to silence others, and the danger that a ruling orthodoxy will stifle dissent is never wholly absent. Claims that a particular party line has gained the ascendency on the nation’s campuses, whether that be an ideology of the left or the right, Marxism or libertarianism, should provoke our skepticism. All the same, the atmosphere of openness and readiness to listen to others who hold sharply different views is a rare and fragile thing, not just on campus but in other communities as well. It needs to be nurtured and defended against social and political pressures that threaten it.

The goal of upholding freedom of thought and expression mandates broad discretion for students—and faculty members—in planning debates, inviting speakers, publishing opinions in campus newspapers, and the like. Some student codes of conduct underscore the importance of these provisions by including a formal “bill of student rights” in their discipline code, setting out the extent of students’ freedom to speak and act.

The goal of facilitating open discourse entails another objective with which it might appear initially to be in conflict: minimizing the incidence of abusive and degrading speech and writing. Conflict does occur between these two objectives, but it need not. If carelessly and vaguely written, a speech code intended to prohibit racial and gender abuse can cast a pall over discussion of controversial issues and deter open expression of unpopular ideas. Disciplinary rules need to target precisely those rare sorts of abusive speech that cast some out of the community of discourse and treat them as less than human. If narrowly worded and carefully framed, hate speech policies contribute to an environment conducive to learning and constructive discourse, barring the door only to those who by their very choice of words would exclude others on the basis of race, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Upholding an atmosphere conducive to free and honest discourse has implications in what might appear to be an unrelated realm, that of on-campus housing. Clear rules, consistently applied, concerning alcohol use and overnight guests in residence halls contribute to an ethos in which students’ social and academic lives are closely integrated, each supporting and advancing the other. Absence of such rules, on the other hand, or their effective absence owing to lax or inconsistent enforcement, makes residence halls essentially useless for purposes of study, especially in evening hours. On far more campuses than the admissions brochures and student life administrators acknowledge, drinking and partying and hooking up in dorm rooms effectively opens a wide gulf between the academic enterprise and the social community in which students live. Not only does it impede academic study, it also inhibits thoughtful political and intellectual discourse.

What sorts of regulations are appropriate in student housing? The traditions and the character of a particular institution make it difficult to generalize, as does the architecture of student housing. A building with a separate wing for study, well away from social gathering spaces, poses fewer challenges than a complex of small rooms. The parietal rules of earlier generations rested on moral dogmas that students might have rejected if asked. But we need not invoke an outmoded moralism to justify promoting a healthy environment for learning.

In effect, student life staff today are invoking old means to new ends. No campus administrators claim the prerogative of acting in loco parentis to prohibit drinking and cohabitation today. But if they do not set some rules for student life—acting in loco avunculi, like a concerned but not controlling uncle—then students must live in what are merely and literally “dormitories,” places for sleeping and partying but not for studying or serious conversation. To leave students to behave as they will without restriction in on-campus housing is not merely to set aside the moralistic ambitions of an earlier era but to compromise the obligation of the university to maintain an atmosphere for students in which study and learning can flourish.

An interesting trend has emerged recently in campus housing: more and more campuses offer options for “substance-free housing,” residence halls whose residents promise not to use tobacco, alcohol, or recreational drugs. One source lists forty institutions offering this option, implicitly acknowledging that discipline codes alone do not guarantee an environment conducive to study, and no doubt there are many more. I have not found any studies assessing the effectiveness of offering such options—how many students choose them and how well they comply with the rules. On online forums, some students say they are glad to be in environments free from wild parties, but others say the wildest parties on their campuses tend to happen in the supposedly substance-free halls. Clearly much depends both on student compliance and on institutional oversight.

To Nurture a Sense of Community

A third essential goal of student conduct regulation is to instill a sense of mutual responsibility and moral community in students. This third aim is both more comprehensive and more controversial than the first two. Some would reject it as extending beyond the proper function of a modern university, which should stick to academics and not meddle in the private affairs and personal relationships of its students. But to neglect this third purpose would be an abdication of a critical responsibility of the college and university.

Formation of character was once upheld as a central, if not the primary, purpose of higher education. This tradition is honored rhetorically in the preamble to many a college catalog, where the language of character, citizenship, and moral community is laid on with a trowel. Yet today few colleges, and even fewer universities, take their own lofty rhetoric seriously in planning their programs, hiring new faculty, or shaping general education requirements.

A typical college of the eighteenth or nineteenth century made the behavior of students its business and sought to inculcate moral virtue, which a majority of institutions grounded in religious orthodoxy of one sort or another. In the 1860s, to cite one example, the student conduct code at Harvard was forty pages long. Many college presidents of that era taught a required course in ethics for graduating seniors.

A typical college or university of the twenty-first century proclaims its lofty goals of training responsible and engaged citizens and promoting a sense of moral and social accountability only in the first few pages of the catalog and in fundraising appeals to alumni, while its actions carry another message entirely. I do not intend to suggest that moral growth does not occur in universities, of course. Every issue of every alumni magazine highlights glowing testimonials to the inspiring example of instructors who opened students’ eyes to the pressing problems of the nation and the world, leading them into careers in public health or community development. Faculty and their employers can take pride in such stories.

But these stories may not reflect the operating principles of the institution. Indeed, they may result from the readiness of some faculty and administrators to defy an institutional culture of individualism and careerism. At many institutions the core message that can be discerned, in faint letters behind the inflated rhetoric of marketing brochures, might be summarized thus: “We hire excellent scholars for the faculty, we maintain a fine library and provide access to a world of online resources, we cherish our sports teams’ trophies, we fill the flower beds each year for parents’ weekend, and we sincerely hope that our students will turn out all right.”

Whether graduating seniors are paragons of virtue or cynical opportunists is a matter largely beyond the control of the institution and its faculty. Moral character has been largely shaped before students begin university studies, after all. Even in college, other factors—family, peer judgment, mass media, and personal reflection—are likely to exercise a more profound influence on students’ ethical commitments and sensibilities than will any acts or policies of the institution. For most students, a few faculty members will stand out, even a decade after graduation, as models of both intellectual and ethical integrity, and I do not mean to understate the effectiveness of faculty-student interaction both in and out of the classroom. But matters such as these cannot be effectively mandated by institutional rules or policies. The goal of producing ethical and engaged citizens is simply not realistically attainable by any institution, whatever the preamble to the college catalog may boast.

All the same, the university can and should seek to create a campus atmosphere of respect, openness, critical discourse, and mutual recognition of both rights and responsibilities. Students learn quickly, as much from unspoken signals as from handbooks and speeches, the limits of acceptable behavior. An instructor who overlooks rampant cheating on the first test of the semester cannot expect better behavior on the next one. An institution that takes no effective steps to prevent and punish alcohol abuse tells its students by its inaction that, notwithstanding the lofty ideals in the catalog, they are students at a party school. Conversely, if cribbing and excessive drinking meet firm and consistent discipline, students learn that they will be held responsible for their academic work and for their actions. And the behavior of administrators and faculty members speaks louder than the conduct code.

When students regularly observe their instructors engaging in spirited and open-minded debates with each other and with students over important moral and social issues of the day, they learn that the institution expects more than transmission and acquisition of knowledge. When a controversy over campus policies or governance is resolved through consultation and cooperation among students, staff, and faculty, students’ moral education is advanced, not by a required senior class, or a student handbook, or a presidential dictum ending the debate, but by seeing how the campus community functions. Even in cases where resolution is not reached and controversy continues, the character of a diverse campus community is evident in its modes of discourse.

Modern societies regard moral choices as fundamentally individual decisions. While this ideology has made indispensable contributions to the establishment and protection of a broad range of personal and political liberties, it is grossly inadequate as a description of our moral life and action. We make our choices in social and cultural contexts. Morality is both learned and exercised, above all, in relation to others. This is why a collaborative response to the challenges that confront a campus community is so vitally important: the community itself is the context in which morality arises, is articulated, and is put into practice.

Consider a hypothetical example. Suppose a crisis erupts when members of a fraternity taunt and harass transgender students. Their behavior elicits protests by student groups that serve as advocates for LGBTQ+ students, and then those protests provoke counterprotests from other fraternities. What should be done? Should the students responsible for the initial incidents of harassment be punished? Or should students work out their differences without interference from student life staff?

To allow such behavior to pass without comment suggests that the university either approves or tolerates behavior that falls far below a minimum standard of mutual respect. To do and say nothing is in effect to accept the fraternity members’ judgment that trans students are not deserving members of the student body. But disciplinary action alone, punishing the individuals involved without addressing what lies behind offensive behaviors, is also inadequate.

In a campus community that promotes mutual respect and open dialogue, such an incident might yield a process of deliberation and consultation leading to action more wide-ranging and more lasting than sanctions for a few individuals. In discussions that bring diverse viewpoints into conversation with each other, transgender students and their allies would gain a wider audience for their concerns, not just about isolated incidents of harassment but also about difficulties they face in classrooms, residence halls, and locker rooms. Leaders and members of fraternities would be challenged to identify aspects of their past behavior and rhetoric that made misbehavior more likely and to undertake changes in the future. Everyone who attends to this discussion on campus would learn more about the experience of those who face abuse because of others’ insecurities and fears.

A process in which all voices are heard, and then paths for future cooperation are mapped out, serves as a concrete demonstration that the campus community can face and resolve its problems. The goals of freedom of expression, freedom of association, and regard for the vulnerable may come into conflict. Balancing them requires patience and wisdom. When students participate in or observe a process that airs differences and finds common ground, they do not simply learn to respect differences and stop shouting insults. They learn what it means to be a member of a moral community.

I do not mean to suggest that every incident of petty harassment warrants such a full-court response. Context is crucial. An isolated incident on a campus where LGBTQ+ students feel fully a part of the community may offer no reason for alarm or for a public response. At the other extreme, if a pattern of repeated and damaging attacks on a campus minority becomes evident on campus, what is needed is a prompt and firm disciplinary response, prompting measures such as suspension and restitution, not an extended dialogue between offenders and victims. In incidents that fall between these extremes, however, what is initially no more than an unpleasant incident can be the catalyst for a vivid demonstration of how a healthy moral community on campus resolves problems.

Unique in American society, the community of learning that exists on campus—both intellectual and moral—is threatened from within and without. The suspicions of legislatures and anxious parents, the economic and political agendas of private and public donors, and the social-media carping of uninformed critics all seek to limit campus freedoms. No less grave a threat to the health of the campus community are the temptations that draw faculty and students themselves into a narrow vision of higher education, lapsing into individualism, careerism, and social and political apathy.

Nurturing an effective community conducive to moral growth is a vital third goal of student discipline systems, in addition to the prevention of harm and the facilitation of free and open dialogue. It is a worthwhile exercise on any campus to assess the effectiveness of rules, enforcement provisions, and daily practices in advancing each of these three objectives.

Discipline is something that we have all experienced personally in different forms, seen used on others, and is also something that many of us will go on to use later in life, both in the form of self-discipline and as something to keep children and even employees in check. It is essential to life as we know it, and we need it in its many different forms in many different situations.

The first reason that discipline is so important is that we all need to exercise self-discipline to be successful in life. Self-discipline can mean very different things to different people; for students, for example, self-discipline is often about motivating yourself and making yourself concentrate on your studies and get your assignments in on time. For working people, it can be as simple as getting up on time every morning, however tired you may be and how much you may hate your job, getting to work on time and doing your job. Without this kind of self-discipline, people would not be able to enjoy academic success, or be successful in their careers either.

Self-discipline is also required for dieters and anyone doing regular exercise, because given the chance, most of us would prefer to be lazy rather than get up and exercise, and eat burgers and fries rather than healthy food. Without it, even more people would be fat and unhealthy, and a lack of self-discipline in some people certainly contributes to the obesity crisis.

Discipline is also something that needs to be used on others where necessary. If parents didn’t discipline their children when they were naughty, children wouldn’t grow up knowing right from wrong, or be able to become productive members of society who contribute to the system. Equally, schoolteachers need to be able to dish out punishments to children who don’t behave themselves. Without discipline in the classroom, there would be a great deal of disruption and nobody would ever learn anything. Indeed, teachers who struggle to command the respect of students and who fail to use discipline effectively will often have trouble even making themselves heard in a classroom.

In the workplace, discipline is also essential to maintaining a hierarchy and dealing with employees who do not follow company policies and procedures, regularly arrive late or not at all, or treat their co-workers unfairly. Then, you have to consider that without discipline, there would be no law enforcement. Murderers would be roaming the streets and everybody would be stealing from each other, because there would be no consequences for their actions.

Discipline acts as a vital deterrent to stop children being naughty, people from missing work, and even potential criminals from stealing and killing, and for this reason it is vital in human society.

Exploring academic disciplines.

Most college writing has some basic features in common: a sense of ethical responsibility and the use of credible and credited sources, critical thinking, and sound argumentation. In addition to these common features, each academic discipline, over many generations, has developed its own specific methods of asking questions and sharing answers. This chapter will show you how to use the lenses of various academic disciplines to develop your writing, reading, and thinking.

3.1 Exploring Academic Disciplines

Learning objectives.

Survey the landscape of academic disciplines.
Appreciate how academic disciplines help shape how we understand the world.
Understand that academic disciplines are constantly in flux, negotiating the terms, conditions, and standards of inquiry, attribution, and evidence.

The following table shows one version of the main academic disciplines and some of their branches.

Since the makeup of the different branches is always in flux and since the history of any institution of higher education is complicated, you will likely find some overlapping and varying arrangements of disciplines at your college.

Part of your transition into higher education involves being aware that each discipline is a distinct discourse community with specific vocabularies, styles, and modes of communication. Later in your college career, you will begin your writing apprenticeship in a specific discipline by studying the formats of published articles within it. You will look for the following formal aspects of articles within that discipline and plan to emulate them in your work:

Introduction
Overall organization
Tone (especially level of formality)
Person (first, second, or third person)
Voice (active or passive)
Sections and subheads
Use of images (photos, tables, graphics, graphs, etc.)
Discipline-specific vocabulary
Types of sources cited
Use of source information
Documentation style (American Psychological Association, Modern Language Association, Chicago, Council of Science Editors, and so on; for more on this, see Chapter 22 “Appendix B: A Guide to Research and Documentation” )
Intended audience
Published format (print or online)

Different disciplines tend to recommend collecting different types of evidence from research sources. For example, biologists are typically required to do laboratory research; art historians often use details from a mix of primary and secondary sources (works of art and art criticism, respectively); social scientists are likely to gather data from a variety of research study reports and direct ethnographic observation, interviews, and fieldwork; and a political scientist uses demographic data from government surveys and opinion polls along with direct quotations from political candidates and party platforms.

Consider the following circle of professors. They are all asking their students to conduct research in a variety of ways using a variety of sources.

What’s required to complete a basic, introductory essay might essentially be the same across all disciplines, but some types of assignments require discipline-specific organizational features. For example, in business disciplines, documents such as résumés, memos, and product descriptions require a specialized organization. Science and engineering students follow specific conventions as they write lab reports and keep notebooks that include their drawings and results of their experiments. Students in the social sciences and the humanities often use specialized formatting to develop research papers, literature reviews, and book reviews.

Part of your apprenticeship will involve understanding the conventions of a discipline’s key genres. If you are reading or writing texts in the social sciences, for example, you will notice a meticulous emphasis on the specifics of methodology (especially key concepts surrounding the collection of data, such as reliability, validity, sample size, and variables) and a careful presentation of results and their significance. Laboratory reports in the natural and applied sciences emphasize a careful statement of the hypothesis and prediction of the experiment. They also take special care to account for the role of the observer and the nature of the measurements used in the investigation to ensure that it is replicable. An essay in the humanities on a piece of literature might spend more time setting a theoretical foundation for its interpretation, it might also more readily draw from a variety of other disciplines, and it might present its “findings” more as questions than as answers. As you are taking a variety of introductory college courses, try to familiarize yourself with the jargon of each discipline you encounter, paying attention to its specialized vocabulary and terminology. It might even help you make a list of terms in your notes.

Scholars also tend to ask discipline-related kinds of questions. For example, the question of “renewable energy” might be a research topic within different disciplines. The following list shows the types of questions that would accommodate the different disciplines:

Business (economics): Which renewable resources offer economically feasible solutions to energy issues?
Humanities (history): At what point did humans switch from the use of renewable resources to nonrenewable resources?
Natural and applied sciences (engineering): How can algae be developed at a pace and in the quantities needed to be a viable main renewable resource?
Social sciences (geography): Which US states are best suited to being key providers of renewable natural resources?

Based on the example at the end of this section, pick a topic that multiple disciplines study. Formulate four questions about the topic, one from each of any four different disciplines. Ideally choose a topic that might come up in four courses you are currently taking or have recently taken, or choose a topic of particular interest to you. Here are just a few examples to get you started:

Child abuse
Poverty in developing nations
Women in the workforce
Drawing from the synopses of current research on the Arts and Letters Daily website (see the Note 2.5 “Gallery of Web-Based Texts” in Chapter 2 “Becoming a Critical Reader” ), read the article referenced on a topic or theme of interest to you. Discuss how the author’s discipline affects the way the topic or theme is presented (specifically, the standards of inquiry and evidence).

3.2 Seeing and Making Connections across Disciplines

Learn how to look for connections between the courses you are taking in different disciplines.
Witness how topics and issues are connected across disciplines, even when they are expressed differently.
Understand how to use disciplines to apply past knowledge to new situations.

Section 3.1 “Exploring Academic Disciplines” focused on the formal differences among various academic disciplines and their discourse communities. This section will explore the intellectual processes and concepts disciplines share in common. Even though you will eventually enter a discipline as an academic specialization (major) and as a career path (profession), the first couple of years of college may well be the best opportunity you will ever have to discover how disciplines are connected.

That process may be a re discovery, given that in the early grades (K–5), you were probably educated by one primary teacher each year covering a set of subjects in a single room. Even though you likely covered each subject in turn, that elementary school classroom was much more conducive to making connections across disciplines than your middle school or high school environment. If you’ve been educated in public schools during the recent era of rigid standardization and multiple-choice testing conducted in the name of “accountability,” the disciplines may seem more separate from one another in your mind than they actually are. In some ways, the first two years of your college experience are a chance to recapture the connections across disciplines you probably made naturally in preschool and the elementary grades, if only at a basic level at the time.

In truth, all disciplines are strikingly similar. Together, they are the primary reason for the survival and evolution of our species. As humans, we have designed disciplines, over time, to help us understand our world better. New knowledge about the world is typically produced when a practitioner builds on a previous body of work in the discipline, most often by advancing it only slightly but significantly. We use academic and professional disciplines to conduct persistent, often unresolved conversations with one another.

Most colleges insist on a “core curriculum” to make sure you have the chance to be exposed to each major discipline at least once before you specialize and concentrate on one in particular. The signature “Aha!” moments of your intellectual journey in college will come every time you grasp a concept or a process in one course that reminds you of something you learned in another course entirely. Ironically the more of those “Aha!” moments you have in the first two years of college, the better you’ll be at your specialization because you’ll have that much more perspective about how the world around you fits together.

How can you learn to make those “Aha!” moments happen on purpose? In each course you take, instead of focusing merely on memorizing content for the purposes of passing an exam or writing an essay that regurgitates your professor’s lecture notes, learn to look for the key questions and controversies that animate the discipline and energize the professions in it. If you organize your understanding of a discipline around such questions and controversies, the details will make more sense to you, and you will find them easier to master.

Disciplines build on themselves, applying past knowledge to new situations and phenomena in a constant effort to improve understanding of the specific field of study.
Different disciplines often look at the same facts in different ways, leading to wholly different discoveries and insights.
Disciplines derive their energy from persistent and open debate about the key questions and controversies that animate them.
Arrange at least one interview with at least one of your instructors, a graduate student, or a working professional in a discipline in which you are interested in studying or pursuing as a career. Ask your interviewee(s) to list and describe three of the most persistent controversies, questions, and debates in the field. After absorbing the response(s), write up a report in your own words about the discipline’s great questions.
Using a textbook or materials from another course you are taking, describe a contemporary controversy surrounding the ways a discipline asks questions or shares evidence and a historical controversy that appears to have been resolved.
Using one of your library’s disciplinary databases or the Note 2.5 “Gallery of Web-Based Texts” in Chapter 2 “Becoming a Critical Reader” , find a document that is at least fifty years old operating in a certain discipline, perhaps a branch of science, history, international diplomacy, political science, law, or medicine. The Smithsonian Institution or Avalon Project websites are excellent places to start your search. Knowing what you know about the current conventions and characteristics of the discipline through which this document was produced, how does its use of the discipline differ from the present day? How did the standards of the discipline change in the interim to make the document you’ve found seem so different? Have those standards improved or declined, in your opinion?

3.3 Articulating Multiple Sides of an Issue

Explore how to recognize binary oppositions in various disciplines.
Learn the value of entertaining two contradictory but plausible positions as part of your thinking, reading, and writing processes.
Appreciate the productive, constructive benefits of using disciplinary lenses and borrowing from other disciplines.

Regardless of the discipline you choose to pursue, you will be arriving as an apprentice in the middle of an ongoing conversation. Disciplines have complicated histories you can’t be expected to master overnight. But learning to recognize the long-standing binary oppositions in individual disciplines can help you make sense of the specific issues, themes, topics, and controversies you will encounter as a student and as a professional. Here are some very broadly stated examples of those binary oppositions.

These binary oppositions move freely from one discipline to another, often becoming more complicated as they do so. Consider a couple of examples:

The binary opposition in the natural and applied sciences between empiricism (the so-called scientific method) and rationalism (using pure reason to speculate about one’s surroundings) originated as a debate in philosophy, a branch of the humanities . In the social sciences , in recent years, empirical data about brain functions in neuroscience have challenged rationalistic theories in psychology. Even disciplines in business are using increasingly empirical methods to study how markets work, as rationalist economic theories of human behavior increasingly come under question.
The binary opposition between text and context in the humanities is borrowed from the social sciences . Instead of viewing texts as self-contained creations, scholars and artists in the humanities began to appreciate and foreground the cultural influences that helped shape those texts. Borrowings from business disciplines, such as economics and marketing, furthered the notion of a literary and artistic “marketplace,” while borrowings from the natural and applied sciences helped humanists examine more closely the relationship between the observer (whether the critic or the artist) and the subject (the text).

Of course, these two brief summaries vastly oversimplify the evolution of multiple disciplines over generations of intellectual history. Like the chart of binary oppositions, they’re meant merely to inspire you at this point to begin to note the connections between disciplines. Learning to think, write, and function in interdisciplinary ways requires practice that begins at the level of close reading and gradually expands into the way you interact with your surroundings as a college student and working professional.

For a model of how to read and think through the disciplines, let’s draw on a short but very famous piece of writing (available through the Avalon Project in the Note 2.5 “Gallery of Web-Based Texts” ), Abraham Lincoln’s “Address at the Dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery,” composed and delivered in November of 1863, several months after one of the bloodiest battles in the American Civil War.

A military historian (red passages) might focus on Lincoln’s rhetorical technique of using the field of a previous battle in an ongoing war (in this case a victory that nonetheless cost a great deal of casualties on both sides) as inspiration for a renewed, redoubled effort.
A social psychologist (blue passages) might focus on how Lincoln uses this historical moment of unprecedented national trauma as an occasion for shared grief and shared sacrifice, largely through using the rhetorical technique of an extended metaphor of “conceiving and dedicating” a nation/child whose survival is at stake.
A political scientist (green passages) might focus on how Lincoln uses the occasion as a rhetorical opportunity to emphasize that the purpose of this grisly and grim war is to preserve the ideals of the founders of the American republic (and perhaps even move them forward through the new language of the final sentence: “of the people, by the people, for the people”).

Notice that each reader, regardless of academic background, needs a solid understanding of how rhetoric works (something we’ll cover in Chapter 4 “Joining the Conversation” in more detail). Each reader has been trained to use a specific disciplinary lens that causes certain passages to rise to prominence and certain insights to emerge.

But the real power of disciplines comes when these readers and their readings interact with each other. Imagine how a military historian could use social psychology to enrich an understanding of how a civilian population was motivated to support a war effort. Imagine how a political scientist could use military history to show how a peacetime, postwar governmental policy can trade on the outcome of a battle. Imagine how a social psychologist could use political science to uncover how a traumatized social structure can begin to heal itself through an embrace of shared governance.

As Lincoln would say, “It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.”

Disciplines have long-standing binary oppositions that help shape the terms of inquiry.
To think, read, and write in a given discipline, you must learn to uncover binary oppositions in the texts, objects, and phenomena you are examining.
Binary oppositions gain power and complexity when they are applied to multiple disciplines.
Following the Gettysburg Address example at the end of this section, use three disciplinary lenses to color-code a reading of your choice from the Note 2.5 “Gallery of Web-Based Texts” in Chapter 2 “Becoming a Critical Reader” .
Find a passage in one of the textbooks you’re using in another course (or look over your lecture notes from another course) where the main discipline appears to be borrowing theories, concepts, or binary oppositions from other disciplines in order to produce new insights and discoveries.
Individually or with a partner, set up an imaginary two-person dialogue of at least twenty lines (or two pages) that expresses two sides of a contemporary issue with equal force and weight. You may use real people if you want, either from your reading of specific columnists at Arts and Letters Daily or of the essayists at the Big Questions Essay Series (see the Note 2.5 “Gallery of Web-Based Texts” in Chapter 2 “Becoming a Critical Reader” ). In a separate memo, indicate which side you lean toward personally and discuss any difficulty you had with the role playing required by this exercise.
Show how one of the binary oppositions mentioned in this section is expressed by two writers in a discipline of your choosing. Alternatively, you can come up with a binary opposition of your own, backing it up with examples from the two extremes.
Briefly describe how an insight or discovery applied past disciplinary knowledge to a new situation or challenge. How might you begin to think about addressing one of the contemporary problems in your chosen discipline?

If you are feeling great and jamming along to an assignment no problem, take a moment to notice what makes it easier for you and write that down. Is it your current music playlist? The time of day? The amazing breakfast you had time to eat because you woke up early?

When you find yourself getting distracted, make a note of the circumstances so that you can avoid the same pitfalls again.

For example, if your roommate always gets home in the early evening and you find yourself chatting away and losing focus, try not to schedule your study time for that hour. Or if you notice that skipping lunch has your head in a fog, make sure to eat at the proper time. Teachers have a hard task in shaping the behaviour of children and they had to be “bad cops” every time in order to ensure discipline of students. In professional lives, discipline and code of conduct for employees is controlled by leaders and managers. It is really hectic when it comes to discipline in adults because the forms of punishment as consequences of indiscipline are hard to apply on people you respect especially those who are older than you. As a manager, it is important that discipline is maintained.

Types of Discipline:

There are three types of discipline based on behaviour modification. These types of discipline are aimed at correcting misbehavior. Misbehavior is any behaviour that is inappropriate according to the guidelines for behaviour that are set for a specific area.

Discipline should search for a balance between finding disciplinary action and its long term effects. As a parent or a teacher, it is upon you to discipline your child but how you do it matters because the child may end up having feelings of hate towards you, which leads to more inappropriate behaviour. Nowadays, respect has deteriorated and most of the teachers are young. Discipline management in situations where leaders are not respected is sort of impossible.

Economic difficulties also contribute to ineffective discipline managements. Due to increase in population, management of discipline is hard because misbehavior incidences increase due to poverty and discipline management is compromised through these economic hardships. A student is like a blank paper in which anything can be printed. If the student does not get the right education and proper accompaniment at that time, then he can wander through his goal and catch the path of wrongful work, so the importance of discipline in student life increases even further.

A student is the future generation of our country which will go ahead and build our country. But students will not know how to live in discipline so they can also destroy the cause of the country.

Student class is the youth power of the country, if the young generation of a country is wrong and it is in the wrong compatible, then the salvation of that country is not possible.

Students life is the cornerstone of a person’s entire life if this foundation is weak, then the future will be full of difficulties, and even the face of failure can be seen. This is the bitter truth of life, but nowadays, people are not paying attention to this fact at all.

Rising Discipline Problems in Schools: Another Sign of Pandemic’s Toll

Incidents of student misconduct have risen in New York City since pandemic disruptions, though serious crimes in schools have decreased.

New York City schools are grappling with a spike in discipline problems among children, evidence that the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic are having lingering effects, educators and experts say.

Most of the misconduct involves lower-level disturbances that educators and advocates say show that many students are still having a hard time emotionally after the stress of the pandemic .

Despite a handful of high-profile episodes — at least two students were slashed at Port Richmond High School in Staten Island this week, for example — student arrests account for a small percentage of discipline incidents, according to the Police Department.

Luis A. Rodriguez, an assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies at New York University, said the increase was not necessarily surprising, given the isolation and stress students and their families experienced during the pandemic.

“Schools have had to reckon with the impact Covid has had on socializing,” he said.

At the High School of Fashion Industries in Manhattan, Rosa Isabel Chavez, a fashion design teacher, said that when schools reopened, students came back lacking “a high-school-level mentality.”

“ They were very much still childlike,” she said. “We had freshmen still holding hands, the way little children do in elementary school, which was adorable, but still scary.”

There were also fights, she added, because students thought “the response was to hit instead of talking things out.”

Last school year, there were 14,048 school safety incidents, according to Police Department data. In the 2018-2019 school year, there were 11,504. The increase comes amid debate over how schools should respond to discipline problems.

In recent years, both the police and the Education Department have sought to reduce how often officers respond to low-level offenses like disorderly conduct. Police Department data shows that when uniformed officers and school safety agents do respond, they are now more likely to send students back to their schools for discipline instead of arresting them or issuing a summons.

Jenna Lyle, an Education Department spokeswoman, said schools should be “safe havens for our children,” adding that schools have the tools to “address any issues in a positive, supportive, and less punitive manner. ”

Still, the number of times students were suspended or removed from class rose last year, to 36,992 from 31,738 the year before, though it remains below prepandemic levels.

“Most discipline incidences are not serious,” said Madeline Borrelli, a special-education teacher and member of Teachers Unite, an organization focused on ending “the school-to-prison pipeline.”

She said schools with fewer resources, where teachers may be overwhelmed, may be relying on suspensions or calling in school safety agents “to respond to normal child behavior.”

Rohini Singh, director of the School Justice Project at Advocates for Children of New York, which has called for school safety reforms, said law enforcement still has an “outsize role” in school discipline.

And racial disparities remain. Black pupils make up a quarter of the city’s public school population, but 40 percent of suspensions or classroom removals. Black students were involved in more than half of incidents in which the police intervened.

Broadly, serious incidents at schools — like assault and burglary — have stayed relatively low compared to the late 2010s, according to the mayor’s office, but some recent incidents have been violent.

In February, two students were stabbed at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens; a 14-year-old boy was slashed outside M.S. 246 in Brooklyn; and a 12-year-old girl was stabbed inside Pathways College Preparatory School in Queens, according to the Police Department.

This month, an 8-year-old was found with a gun at his Brooklyn elementary school, though it was not loaded and no one was hurt, the police said.

David C. Bloomfield, a professor of education leadership at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center, said gang activity appeared to be up, and that “some of that has to do with adolescent alienation we are seeing more generally.”

The rise in disciplinary problems in schools has been unsettling for students and parents.

In December, a student was stabbed at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, prompting a lockdown. Fumbi Joseph Vilme, a freshman, said he stayed in the piano room for several hours. He said he wished there were metal detectors, “because you are kind of supposed to feel safe in school.”

His father, Marvin Vilme, who also attended the school, said he was shocked and has since considered home-schooling his son.

But Sumarha Tariq, who attended the High School of Fashion Industries, is one of the students who may have benefited from efforts to reduce police involvement in disciplinary issues.

In 2022, after she was found with pepper spray in her backpack, which is illegal for minors, a safety agent referred her case back to the school.

A school counselor issued a warning, but not a suspension, after Ms. Tariq wrote a statement explaining that she carried the spray because she had faced harassment on her commute. She made it through the rest of high school without problems, graduated and is now a freshman at Yale University.

It was, Ms. Tariq said, “the best scenario.”

High school students on Long Island and around the state have been able to earn college credits while still in high school for many years. Many school districts have outstanding programs through collaborations with colleges/universities.

Since college is so expensive and not always accessible to every student, it is time for New York to enter a new era of academic advancement. Early college/dual enrollment programs can be transformative for high school students by offering unique opportunities to amplify educational horizons and better equip students for the challenges that lie beyond the classroom.

Early college/dual enrollment programs allow students to simultaneously earn high school and college credit by taking courses at or offered by accredited colleges and universities. Our organization of school counselors provides guidance and recommendations for implementing and overseeing these programs across the state.

The New York State School Counselor Association believes these programs provide students with the opportunity to challenge themselves academically and that these programs should be available in all of New York's public schools. Though more than half of New York's high schools offer a dual enrollment program, only 15.8% of the state's high school students were enrolled in such a program in 2022, according to state Education Department data.

Access to these programs would help our high-schoolers make knowledgeable choices about their postsecondary education and career plans. This would enhance college accessibility and affordability by giving students a head start on their college education and thus saving students and their parents time and expense. This would, in turn, strengthen the partnership between our K-12 schools and colleges and universities.

To make these programs rigorous, accessible, and equitable, we strongly suggest that the programs contain academic equivalence with the courses being offered to students by their high schools and that they be taught by qualified instructors with appropriate credentials and experience.

Quality assurance should consist of regular evaluations and assessments of dual enrollment programs to maintain high-quality standards.

Administrative support is also crucial to success and to that end, we suggest creating an Office for Early College/Dual Enrollment Programs at the state Education Department with regional support centers and stable funding to support these initiatives.

Collaboration between K-12 schools, colleges, and universities is critical to foster successful dual enrollment programs. It is essential to establish clear communication channels, data-sharing agreements, and partnerships for program sustainability.

We advocate for policies that support dual enrollment programs, including pending legislation that provides TAP funding for school districts hosting dual enrollment programs and measures that promote equitable access for all students and provide resources and professional development opportunities for school counselors, educators, and administrators involved in dual enrollment to ensure best practices are followed.

The time to make this investment is now. Dual enrollment programs have the potential to significantly benefit New York State students in their pursuit of higher education and career success. We should do everything we can to help them on that journey.
