Don’t Judge by External Appearances

Written by joshua becker · 45 Comments

I once read a quote that said, “ Do not judge by appearances; a rich heart may be under a poor coat. ” And I can’t emphasize it enough.

We are a society quick to judge the success of others based on external appearances. But I can’t think of a more foolish metric to utilize.

Some psychologists argue this is natural for humans. “Our unconscious mind starts from whatever objective data is available to us—usually spotty—and helps to shape and construct the more complete picture we consciously perceive.”

I suppose this makes sense to me. But here’s the problem:

We’re terrible at it! Like really, really bad.

In fact, in one study , scientists asked students at a Chinese university to look at selfies and evaluate the personalities of the people pictured in five key personality characteristics. The students were wrong 80% of the time!

80% of the time they were unable to determine the personality or character of a person based solely on appearance.

And yet, we continue to do it—over and over again. Often tricking ourselves into thinking we do it well.

But the proverb stands true, “Do not judge by appearances; a rich heart may be under a poor coat.”

When we hear it, we know it is true. Judging a person based on external appearances is a foolish metric and we all know it.

For one reason, external appearances are easy to manipulate.

Symbols of success can be easily acquired by those who are not successful. Meanwhile, many successful people choose not to display their success with external symbols.

Do you know how easy it is to purchase a flashy car on credit? Or how quickly you can get ahead financially by simply buying a reasonable one? Night and day.

But this isn’t a post about financial success. This is about choosing to not judge others by external appearance.

I have a good friend who lives on the other side of the country. Years ago, when a special needs newborn was abandoned at their local hospital, she and her husband offered to raise the child as their own.

Their new daughter would require almost 24 hour attention for the rest of her life, and yet, they chose to adopt her and bring her into their family.

Decades later now, my friend is not going to turn any heads when she walks into a room.

She doesn’t pull into a parking lot driving an expensive vehicle. She doesn’t wear the latest styles or expensive jewelry. The emotional and physical toll of raising her daughter 24 hours/day for the last 20 years shows on her face and physical appearance as you might imagine it would.

From all outward appearances, there is nothing that would impress you about her.

But on the inside, she may be the strongest, sweetest, kindest, most compassionate human being I’ve ever met. She is wiser than most anyone else in the room. And her heart is beautiful.

That’s the thing about judging by external appearances.

Most people trying to impress you with them aren’t worth emulating.

And those living the most meaningful lives have long since given up trying to impress you with a fancy coat.

My mother said “Handsome is as handsome does”. She wasn’t acquisitive despite being very poor growing up.

Interesting. I’m about to write a blog post that claims the complete opposite. And I have proof! I’m talking about face-to-face interactions, only, mind. And it’s this. We are way more surprised when we have misjudged someone that we would be if that was the common case. Which it is not. Our reads of people that we take, in under 5 seconds, are remarkably and unreasonably accurate. I’m not arguing that this is better or normative, even, just that it is true.

May 22, 2022 at 3:03 AM

I really agree with this. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

It’s super important not to judge too quickly because people you may avoid due to judging too quickly, can actually lead to a really positive experience, amazing conversations and much more!

It’s interesting to hear about the study you mentioned about the personalities!

I have followed Becoming Minimalist for 3years now, I have been debt free since. I have a small house, although on mortgage but not owning a car makes it well within our means to pay and we intend to pay it off in the coming days. We have savings despite pandemic. and a little gardem where I grow a few daily essentials. Getting out of the rat race, becoming more intentional in life gave us health and confidence. People judge us and have stopped associating with us, but I am truly left with more authentic ones who live simply and by extension, counter-culturally. Authenticity is what’s in our hearts. Goodness, thats it.

Why You Shouldn’t Judge A Person By Their Looks

Why You Shouldn't Judge A Person By Their Looks

We have all been guilty of it at some point in our lives – judging a person by their looks. It is human nature to make snap judgments about people we encounter, but this can be a huge mistake. In this blog post, we will discuss why you shouldn’t judge a person by their looks. We will also talk about the importance of getting to know someone before making any assumptions about them.

“ All cassavas have the same skin but not all taste the same.” – Kenyan Proverb

1. You never know what someone is going through and this is why you shouldn’t judge a person by their looks

They can be hurting.

When you judge a person by their looks, you are not taking into account the fact that they may be going through a tough time. It is possible that the person you are judging is dealing with a personal crisis, low self esteem, someone else’s mistakes, own mistakes or some other type of problem. Judging someone based on their outer appearance does not give you the full picture of who they are.

Everyone has a story

It is important to remember that everyone has a story. You may not know what someone is going through, so it is best not to judge them based on incomplete information. There could be a lot of underlying issues that you are not aware of.

Don’t assume

In order to get to know someone, you need to talk to them and learn about their story. Do not make assumptions based on what you see. There is a lot more to people than meets the eye.

2. People can change so don’t judge his or her appearance

It is also important to remember that people can change. Just because someone looks a certain way today, does not mean they will look the same way tomorrow. People can grow and change over time, so it is important not to judge them based on their external appearance alone.

People often judge others based on first impressions which can lead us into making mistakes when actually getting acquainted with said individuals but this doesn’t mean we should ignore those feelings entirely because there could potentially still come together at some point afterall; however if your intuition tells another story then go ahead follow its guidance

3. You might be surprised by what you find out about someone if you get to know them better

You may be surprised by what you find out about someone when they’re not just their looks. There’s more to them than meets the eye, and discovering this is often a pleasant surprise! Do not write off potential friends or relationships before exploring all avenues of getting-to know each other – it could lead down an interesting path fulfilling your dreams (and theirs!).

In order to get to know someone, you need to talk to them and learn about their story. Stop judging based on what you see. For obvious reasons, there is a lot more to people than meets the eye.

4. Physical appearance isn’t everything so don’t judge people

Outward appearance can be deceiving, and you should never judge a person by their looks alone. There is more to someone than meets the eye, and you may be surprised by what you find out about them if you get to know them better.

Appearance isn’t everything, so don’t make assumptions based on how someone looks. There is more to people than just their appearances, and you may be surprised by what you find out about them if you get to know them better.

5. People judge yet everyone is worth getting to know

Finally, remember that everyone is worth getting to know. You may be surprised by what you find out about someone if you get to know them better. Don’t write someone off before you have had a chance to get to know them.

Stop judging people by their appearance. You will end up realizing that everybody has their own preferences and tastes, and everyone is worth getting to know better. Who knows? You might just learn something new about someone that you never would have guessed.

There is more to people than just their appearances, and you may be surprised by what you find out about them if you get to know them better.

6.People are different so stop judging

Most people are different, so stop judging them based on their looks. In life you will never be able to please everyone, so don’t even try. Just be yourself and let people accept you for who you are.

Trying to please everyone by judging them based on their appearances is a waste of time and does not make sense. For most obvious reasons, people are different, so there is no way you can please everyone and it can be hard to have them treat you with the same respect as you tend to give them. Stop Yourself From Judging Someone By Appearance

Have you ever caught yourself in the middle of some thought that you are judging someone by their appearance?

Fear not, it’s not only you. Despite our best moral conscience that says” don’t judge by appearance” we succumb to some kind of trance that we think we have flawless metrics to learn more about people’s personalities by observing and judging their external appearance. We know it, it’s wrong and yet we can’t seem to completely avoid it.

But there should be and there are things we can do to help ourselves from being judgemental. When we find ourselves judging someone by appearance, it is important to be mindful of when these thoughts pop into our minds and recognize them for what they are. This may not be an easy thing to do, but paying attention to the types of judgments or statements we make about others without much thought can help us become more aware of when we are making these assumptions.

We are here to explore some mindful exercises to help us train and command our minds, ” don’t judge people by their looks.”

Don’t judge too quickly.

Do not judge by appearances; a rich heart may be under a poor coat.

Before we move to exercise, let’s first begin by accepting our flawed thoughts as they are and forgiving ourselves that we make errors while we also make amends.

This post is not just about not judging others but it’s also about not judging ourselves too harshly.

Now let’s begin,

How To Deal With Subconscious Judging Someone By Their Appearance?

First, it is important to recognize when these thoughts are creeping into your mind

For example, if someone asks you whether they should wear a bright color or something more subdued for a job interview and your immediate response is something like “You should never wear bright colors! They will just draw too much attention and people will think that you don’t have good taste.” Or “You should definitely go with the brighter color, it will make you stand out and show that you are confident.” These are both examples of judgments that you may be making without realizing it.

Another way to become more aware of the times when you are judging others by their appearance is to pay attention to the way that you feel when you see someone who does not look like they fit into your usual definition of “attractive.”

For example, do you tend to feel uncomfortable or even disgusted when you see someone who is overweight? Or someone who is wearing clothes that are not in style? If you notice that you have a negative reaction to someone based on their physical appearance, then chances are good that you are judgmental towards them.

Once you have become more aware of the times when you are judging others by their appearance, it is important to learn some techniques that can help you keep those thoughts and judgments at bay. For example, if you start noticing that you are having judgmental thoughts about someone’s clothing or weight, then try to refocus your thoughts on something else.

For example, instead of looking at what they are wearing, focus on how they are interacting with others or what kinds of activities they are engaging in. This will help shift your attention away from any negative thoughts that may be triggered by their physical appearance.

Overall, learning to avoid judging someone by their appearance can take some time and practice. But by recognizing these thoughts when they arise and trying out different techniques to shift your focus or allow yourself to become more accepting of others, you can hopefully stop these negative thoughts from taking over.

Never Judge Someone, Tips, and Mental Exercise

  • Take a moment and stop yourself in the middle of your train of thoughts and ask yourself a question. – “Wait, why and how did I arrive at that conclusion? Why did I think this way?”
  • In the series of mental conversations, you have in your mind after that include more questions like: – ” When I stand before a majestic elephant does it ever occur to me why is it so fat, or it is ugly or beautiful because it’s fat? Does how I feel about elephants particularly change from the fact that it has a long trunk? Or Do I just admire this mighty because of the way it serves its own purpose and in no way does it affect me how it looks.”
  • Take a long look at the person before you and think, ” Does it really affect me the way this person appears or looks?”
  • To further give yourself the clarification to the thought above ask yourself this, ” Can this person or I do anything to change what really bothers me about their appearance? Should this person really do anything about their looks to make me feel comfortable? Am I in any position to validate what this person looks like?”

Try out these different techniques of self-awareness for shifting your focus away from these negative thoughts toward more positive or neutral topics.

For example, instead of fixating on someone’s physical appearance, try to focus on their personality or the conversation you are having with them. This can help prevent you from making snap judgments about people based on their looks alone.

It is also helpful to remember that everyone is different and that not everyone will fit into your definition of “attractive.” Learning to accept people for who they are, without judgment, can go a long way in helping you avoid these negative thoughts altogether.

While it may be difficult to completely stop judging others by their appearance and it’s not as simple as it is said to never judge someone, it is important to be aware of when you are doing it and to try out different techniques for preventing these thoughts.

With time and practice, you can hopefully learn to accept people for who they are and avoid making assumptions about them based on their looks alone.

Everyone is different and you shouldn’t let your own biases and preconceptions get in the way of seeing the person for who they really are. Instead, try to focus on getting to know them as an individual and getting to know what makes them tick.

With time and patience, you may just find that they’re not so different from you after all. Not judging others is one of many first steps toward being a better person .

Judging People By Their Appearance Is Not OK

essay on never judge anyone by appearance

Having experienced life as both an overweight and now a skinny woman and I have personally seen the differences in the reactions of others towards heavier people. It is from my personal experience that people, in general are nicer and less judgmental to thin people and look down upon people who are overweight at first. Many people make the generalization that overweight people don't take care of themselves and are lazy, which we all know is not always true.

I've noticed little things like people changing seats on public transportation when a heavier person sits next to them, or not being taken seriously in a job interview because of their size. The issue is they are judging you by your appearance at first impression and it is not right. The person who sits next to you on the bus doesn't know anything about you except what you look like so they judge you on that, and unfortunately their reaction could be less than kind.

I have seen the difference in the way others look at me now that I am skinny compared to when I was overweight. I wish I could say that it is the same but there is a noticeable difference. I felt like I was looked down upon and not taken seriously because of my weight. To make it worse, I believe women are judged on their appearance more than men. Living in today's age it is unfortunate that this is true. As the old saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover but it is 2017 and people are still get judging by their outer appearance. Whether it be skin colour, weight, height or anything else, people look down upon you if your appearance is a little different than the "norm".

Recently I was up north celebrating my 25th birthday in Muskoka, Ontario and on our last day we decided to go through one of the small towns by the lake. We went into a cottage shop and they had lots of cute cottage decor, apparel, and novelty items. There was an elderly couple talking at the other end of the store by these novelty napkins. I overheard the lady laughing and saying "George these napkins say 'Every time I hear that dirty word exercise I wash my mouth out with wine'." I walked over and there were other quotes on merchandise putting down exercise. For me exercise changed my life, so I was caught off guard. It is sad that to the average person the idea of exercising is looked down upon but on the other hand being overweight is also looked down upon. It isn't fair.

My first reaction when I saw these novelty items was to laugh but as a few minutes went by something was still bothering me about that saying on the napkin. Exercise is one of the healthiest activities you can do to improve yourself. Nobody should ever put a negative connotation on any type of exercising. It was bothering me and then I caught myself right there because then I started remembering how I used to negatively perceive the idea of exercise and how I hated it when I was overweight. People put down exercising for one reason only, because it is hard and it is easier not to do it. Exercise is defined as an activity requiring physical effort to improve health. Everyone on this planet wants better and improved health so why is it looked down upon?

When I was heavier, I laughed at those people who loved working out and would rather go to the gym than sit on the couch and watch TV with me. I used to get mad at my friends who would rather eat at home then go get fast food. Now after my transformation, I see it from the opposite perspective. People who actually enjoy working out and eating healthy are focusing on themselves which is so important for your overall health. Most people do not spend enough time in their busy lives exercising and working on themselves. The ones who are motivated are putting aside at least a few hours every week to focus on themselves and forget about distractions or the millions of things you have to do that day. Everybody can have excuses but the people who succeed are the people who are self-determined to make a positive change. That change will benefit them in their workplace, home life and their relationships. Starting to exercise is not easy, but nothing worth it ever is.

Judging someone on appearance is not OK. Doesn't matter if its height, weight, skin tone, or anything else. You shouldn't judge a person by their exterior because you don't know their story. There are hundreds of reasons someone might be overweight and most off them are out of a person's control. People need to stop making negative humour about exercising and they need to start embracing it. If more people exercised and spent more time finding inner peace the world would be a much healthier and happier place. I am the first person to say exercising is not easy and not everyone has the mindset and inner strength to do it but someone should never be looked down upon because of their outer appearance. They should be taken seriously, and they should be given the same respect as anybody else. Don't judge a book by its cover, open up the book, learn more, and then make your decision.

One Should Never Judge a Person by External Appearances

One should never judge a person by external appearances. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer .

I believe that one should not judge a person by external appearances while he does not know a person well. When we meet a person for the first time, we unconsciously make a first impression of him. Some people believe that the first impression about a person is the right one. However, from my everyday experience and observation, I can stand that external appearances are often illusive. I can give several reasons to support my opinion.

First of all, different people have different opinions about the importance of a person’s appearance. Some people dress, behave themselves, wear haircuts to make an impression, feel better about themselves, and even make self-realization. But this does not make them kinder, clever, and more experienced. Unfortunately, people tend to associate these qualities with external appearances.

However, other people do not care much about their appearances. Personally, I do not care about my clothes as long as they are clean, knit, and comfortable. But, to tell the truth, I often judge a person by his external appearances. I can not say it is wrong. I think that it is normal as long as it is just the first impression. I think that people should remember that a first impression can be replaced by another one very quickly, which is not always the better one.

When people begin to communicate and get to know each other, the first impression is replaced by the deeper one. One begins to see the bad and good sides of a person under his clothes , make-up, and even manners.

To sum up, I believe that one should not judge a person before one gets to know him well.

TOEFL Essay: Judging a person by external appearance

Hello! Question: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? A person should never judge a person by external appearance. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer. Answer: I believe that judging about anyone by his external appearance, we perform a tremendous mistake. I have numerous examples in my life when I didn’t like the people at first site but eventually they have become my friends.

The culture and subculture determine the appearance of their followers, but they don’t determine the entire consciences and qualities of the representatives. There are manifold types of clothes all over the world and if the woman wears in Arab headscarf it doesn’t mean that she is a terrorist. It’s most probably the part of her culture, but unfortunately we have in mind stereotypes from a TV. Even in one country numerous subcultures represents the different types of the appearances yet good and bad people are everywhere.

As a matter of fact people have bad and good days and they look and behave accordingly to their moods. It’s quite common when a person, having temporary money problems, wears and looks not too exquisite and, even he’s a good specialist, it will be hard for him to find a job. Sometimes a person don’t have enough time to maintain the glamorous appearance, what obviously doesn’t signify that he is worse than another, spending his time in a beauty shop.

Someone, who doesn’t have excellent exterior, could have other, more important qualities. Will you be friends with the beautiful but stupid and selfish man? Certainly will not. He could be a good musician, awesome orator and perfect sportsman, but you wouldn’t give him a chance to show all these talents if you paid attention only to the imperfect appearance. Also, we could have some bad remembrances relating with the certain appearance and sometimes it’s difficult to overcome them.

I believe it’s not right to judge people by their exterior because you could miss the chance to meet with very interesting humans and make useful acquaintances.

P.S. Alan, I now that my essays have quite similar phrases and constructions, how I could diversify them :?:

How We Judge Others by Their Clothes

A new study on judging appearances is reviewed..

Posted May 24, 2020 | Reviewed by Gary Drevitch

geralt/Pixabay

We make numerous assumptions about strangers merely based on their physical appearances or the emotions they express . For example, we might think baby-faced people are naïve, weak, honest, submissive, or warm. And we often consider attractive people competent, intelligent, healthy, outgoing , and sexually receptive. Similarly, we usually view happy individuals as both dominant and social, judge sad and fearful ones as moderately social but low on dominance, and consider angry people as low on affiliation but high on dominance. 1

Might a person’s clothing also influence our perceptions? For instance, would you assume a woman wearing designer clothing is more competent than one wearing jeans? Would you perceive a man wearing a cooking apron as less competent than a man wearing a suit and an expensive dress shirt? Even if you were told clothes are unrelated to competence and warned not to let clothes influence your judgment of competence?

In an article published in the March 2020 issue of Nature Human Behavior , authors Oh, Shafir, and Todorov of New York University and Princeton University, present new findings on how economic status cues can affect our perceptions . 2 In a series of nine studies, community members and undergraduate students were presented with pictures of random faces paired with either expensive or cheap upper-body clothing and asked to judge these people’s competence. In all investigations, faces paired with richer clothing were judged as more competent, even when the instructions warned participants to ignore clothing in their judgments of competence.

Clothing and judgments of competence

In the first investigation, researchers varied the length of exposure to the pictures to test whether such changes would influence the perceptions of competence. In four studies (3, 6, 7, 8), the investigators also instructed the participants to avoid paying attention to the clothing of people in the picture, telling them to “Focus on the person, and ignore other features such as the clothes.”

The data showed that the duration of exposure or the use of instructions about ignoring the effects of clothing did not make any major difference in the results. Indeed, in each of the first eight studies, over 83% of faces were perceived as more competent when paired with richer (compared to poorer) clothes.

The researchers concluded that the “observed effects cannot be attributed to deliberate inferences based on the clothing,” “appear effortless since they arise at extremely short intervals,” and “are hard for respondents to control.”

In Study 9, the investigators used a choice task. Instead of judging faces one at a time, participants saw a pair of faces and were asked to choose the more competent one. Though the faces were of equal competence rating initially, one was now presented in poorer clothing and one in richer clothing. Half of the participants were also warned that clothing is unrelated to competence but may, nevertheless, influence their judgment of competence. Analysis of data showed similar results as before: About 70% said the person in richer clothing was the more competent of the pair.

Concluding thoughts on judging appearances

Oh and colleagues concluded that clothing, as cues to economic status, influence competence judgments. The effect of clothing on perception was present under a variety of conditions—when the faces were presented for only 129 ms, when participants were warned to ignore the effects of the clothing or even offered rewards for accuracy, etc.

The results agree with previous findings showing that individuals of low socioeconomic status are considered less competent and less worthy of respect.

These biased perceptions can have serious consequences in real-world situations. As the authors note, “Poverty is a place where many challenges—physical, social and psychological—converge: being perceived as of lower competence and disrespected adds to those challenges, and can exacerbate cognitive load and hamper performance, thereby potentially proving self-fulfilling.”

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One should never judge a person by external appearances. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

It is nature that people make a judgment about a person based on their first impressions. Some people judge a person by his or her looks, while others do not think so. In my opinion, people should never judge a person by his or her external appearances. There are some reasons to support my opinion.

First of all, person’s external appearance sometimes causes misleading. It is often said that all that glitters is not gold. Judging a person by his or her exterior is quite similar to choosing an apple by its surface. When buying apples, people often pick beautiful one as their first choice. However, some apples look pretty outside but rotten inside. That is to say, some people have charming looks but may not be good at heart. For example, my classmate, Johansson, looks unfriendly but he is really a very kind person. beneath his rough surface.

Second, some people may evaluate one’s capability by his or her appearance, and think that people with good looks are reliable and trustworthy. However, it is unfair and one-sided to judging people by their exteriors. Take my boss for example. He often makes judgments about new recruits by their looks and sometimes gets wrong information. To evaluate people fairly, we should consider their characteristics and all other situations. A person wearing expensive clothing and pretty makeup may not be intelligent and diligent.

To sum up, external appearance is one way to judge a person but not the best one to judge one’s personality. Although we can get useful information through one's exterior, external appearance sometimes causes misleading. Moreover, we should evaluate people fairly. Therefore, I agree with that people shou ld never judge a person by external appearances.

Your points are good ,u need to improve on grammer and also try to practice with time limits.1.5 hours is too much to complete an essay.

hi freeze, I have a question, you corrected ( To sum up ) with this: To sum it up...

I'm still learning here, but I read it once in one of the books, it says that I can use (to sum up) the same as (in conclusion) or ( in summary). what do you think?

and for you bibicall, 1.5 hours writing one essay is toooooo much, may be you have a problem with typing. any way, I've attached a file, read it, it might help you improve your essay. and good luck:)

What is a good essay writing service?

Oddly enough, but many people still have not come across a quality service. A large number of users fall for deceivers who take their money without doing their job. And some still fulfill the agreements, but very badly.

A good essay writing service should first of all provide guarantees:

  • confidentiality of personal information;
  • for the terms of work;
  • for the timely transfer of the text to the customer;
  • for the previously agreed amount of money.

The company must have a polite support service that will competently advise the client, answer all questions and support until the end of the cooperation. Also, the team must get out of conflict situations correctly.

It is necessary to have several payment methods on the site to make it easier for the client to transfer money.

And of course, only highly qualified writers with a philological education should be present in the team, who will not make spelling and punctuation errors in the text, checking all the information and not stealing it from extraneous sites.

Who will write my essay?

On the website are presented exclusively professionals in their field. If a competent and experienced author worked on the creation of the text, the result is high-quality material with high uniqueness in all respects. When we are looking for a person to work, we pay attention to special parameters:

  • work experience. The longer a person works in this area, the better he understands the intricacies of writing a good essay;
  • work examples. The team of the company necessarily reviews the texts created by a specific author. According to them, we understand how professionally a person works.
  • awareness of a specific topic. It is not necessary to write a text about thrombosis for a person with a medical education, but it is worth finding out how well the performer is versed in a certain area;
  • terms of work. So that we immediately understand whether a writer can cover large volumes of orders.

Only after a detailed interview, we take people to the team. Employees will carefully select information, conduct search studies and check each proposal for errors. Clients pass anti-plagiarism quickly and get the best marks in schools and universities.
