The Power of Teachers: The Opportunity to Shape Lives
George Lucas offers ideas for preparing educators for their all-important role.
The title conveys the highest responsibility of adults towards children. Apart from my parents, my teachers have done the most to shape my life. From kindergarten through college, their struggle -- and it was a struggle -- to help me grow and learn was not in vain. And I greatly appreciate their efforts.
There is no more critical need in our society today than preparing teachers who know their subject matter well and who understand the social and emotional needs of students. After decades of classifying or transporting students, or changing the textbooks and the tests, we now understand that the most active ingredients in improving schools are the knowledge and skills of our teachers. Education is now arriving at the same conclusion as other fields, such as business, medicine, the media, and the military: Investing in professional development should be the number one priority.
As schools of education and educational agencies move to develop a profession of teaching for the future, our Foundation hopes that greater emphasis will be placed on teachers:
- spending more time, earlier in their student teaching, in direct contact with students in classrooms.
- guiding students to use technology to find the latest information, assess its validity, and communicate with experts.
- presenting curriculum that is both rigorous and integrated -- addressing, for instance, both history and science, as James Burke's Connections television series did so well.
- understanding that students' attitudes and emotions need nurturing in the learning process. It's about their hearts, as well as their minds.
Investing in teachers and supporting their learning are the keys to improving our schools. We believe that teachers should themselves be learners because the current state of content knowledge, as well as our understanding about how to teach, improves constantly.
Those of us who make motion pictures are also teachers: teachers with very loud voices. But we will never match the power of the teacher who is able to whisper in a student's ear.

Letâs go back to History
It used to be simple before. A teacher was seen as a lecturer or someone who delivered knowledge and conducted tests. A teacher was perceived as someone who had answers to every question possible, a gatekeeper of all the resources and information too. A decade ago, teachers were responsible for delivering information.
But that was all before the introduction of the internet or digital media . Information is now easy to access. The ocean of data is before us with just a few keystrokes away.
The question is, what would be the role of the teacher if they are no longer the source and the gatekeeper of information?
Letâs figure outâŚ
Role of a teacher in a studentâs life?
Teachers play a very important role in a studentâs life . As a teacher, one must bring out the best in students and inspire them to strive for greatness. Students are considered as the future of the nation and humankind, and a teacher is believed to be a credible guide for their advancement. Not only do they guide students in academics or extracurricular activities, but teachers are also responsible for shaping a childâs future, making him/her a better human being. A teacher imparts knowledge, good values, tradition, modern-day challenges and ways to resolve them within students. A good teacher is an asset to the students.
A teacherâs presence in a studentâs life can boost their morale and guide them to be more valuable in life. Now to perform this task perfectly, a teacher must possess certain qualities-
- Should be impartial, he/she must treat all the students equally.
- Must be an embodiment of patience. Since the pace and speed of learning are different from one student to other, it is very important to understand students, their skills, talent, memory and treats them individually to guide them towards the best.
- A teacher must have problem-solving skills to help students overcome their challenges.
Role of a Teacher in Education?
Education has changed a lot in recent times. Itâs more interactive now with the intrusion of digital media. The new-age technology like artificial intelligence, augmented reality are opening a new dimension in education.
But there is a large role that the teacher has to play here .
They are no more seen as the only keeper of information. Information is already shared and students have chewed them, digested them.
So, what work is left?
There is a gap between the information and knowledge, real education .
Teachers can gear up to help students to understand knowledge and concepts outside the textbook. More the teachers interact with the students with viable, real-life examples, incidents, etc, students will have a better understanding and more awareness of the subject. With real-life examples, they can apply their lessons to many subjects. The teacher has to be a consistent guide here to help the student in graduating from one lesson to another.
Career Counselling
Have you ever heard about â Problem of plenty â? Todayâs students face that while choosing a career.
There are so many options available and for an inexperienced student that it becomes really difficult to steer their career in the right direction.
A teacher is a big help here . They have undergone similar experiences and they certainly know what will work best and whatnot.
Students need to be guided to pick the best career that suits their talent, skill and give them the best platform to expose themselves without any inhibition.
Due to the lack of career counselling , we are finding a lot of poor performances across the education sector in India. Itâs not due to scarcity of skill or talent. The reason is deep-rooted and it goes straight to the lack of vision, experience, and smartness in choosing the right career.
The teacher can certainly save them from making the wrong decision. Letâs understand how.
Guiding across the career
Choosing the right career is just the first step. A teacher has to play the role even beyond that . Students across the world face multiple challenges while choosing a career for themselves. A teacher has to stand by their students to help them overcome these challenges. Here, the primary job is to be empathetic with the students. Show care and nurture students, pay extra attention, be their best pals, show confidence to build the best relationship and extract the best out of them.
Be a leader to raise more leaders
A teacher must enhance civilization while giving people the right tools to make informed decisions. They are here to bestow the power of âproblem-solving skillsâ to the students. They are here to build up a bunch of âcreativeâ, âIndependentâ, âInformedâ, âIncisiveâ and âInnovativeâ individuals who can contribute to the society and build a better place for the next generation. This is a huge responsibility and a teacher has to guide the students and raise them as the leader.
Leadership is the most important trait for modern-day human beings. Leaders make connections and make everyone a part of their mission, a virtue and a quality that demands a special appreciation.
Leadership involves initiative, and in the connected world, nothing happens till we step up and begin, until we start driving without a clear map. There are this confusion and chaos and the leader helps us to guide through them towards the goal. Teachers have to play this decisive role to leave a deep impact on the lives of students and to make them the next leader.
Be the change now
If you are a teacher, hope you understand how your role has evolved. There is a lot more to a teacher than just a human being standing in a classroom to lecture students on how to find the square root of a number or sharpen an axe.
What the world needs is someone to persuade the coming generation in a positive way. Someone to push or encourage students or create a space where they want to learn to better themselves. Thatâs the new role of a teacher.
If all a teacher is going to do is read her pre-written notes from a PowerPoint slide to a lecture hall of thirty or three hundred, perhaps they should then stay at home.
- Time has come to understand what the new time is looking for.
- Time has come to be the right teacher for the right time and the right students.
- Time has come to adopt the new technologies and help students with all might and intention across their defining phases of lives.
Are you a game?

Role of a Teacher in Students’ Life
All children and youth need responsive caregivers. describe your ârole as a teacherâ with your professional attitude and actions while you work directly with the students.
As a teacher working directly with students, my primary role is to ensure that every one of them makes the best out of their inborn skills. I should be in a position to notice the special abilities of all the students in my class and help them focus on developing the skills even further. In this way, I will have avoided incidents of children growing up to find themselves in careers that they naturally would have no desire of being involved in. My attitudes and actions should help in encouraging students to develop the courage to explore their unique talents.
“Hope” was discussed that some students need who are in-home or life situations that are not always positive. Expand on this concept of “hope” and how you could be a major influence for a child or youth (and even parents.)
Parents by their nature are tailored to have the best interest of their children at heart. As such, they will tend to steer the children away from career paths that have led to disappointments in some of the people they have met in their lives. In such situations, the children tend to shy away from exploring desires which they know their parents would not approve of. However, it has been found that with the consistent presentation of the interest, parents eventually relax their stringent rules, allowing the children to work towards their interest. This implies that as long as the student has his hopes directed at following a certain path, he/she will finally meet the desires of his/her heart.
How can the “stress and maltreatment” of children have lifelong effects? What have you learned about this topic?
An individualâs frame of thought is usually shaped when he/she is at the tender ages of childhood. Most of the recollections that a person has of his/her childhood will to a large extent influence how is life is lived as an adult. Children who are raised in harsh environments with constant increases in stress levels stemming from maltreatment end up not exploring their potential to the fullest, as they spend their younger days trying to find a point where they can maintain some sense of tranquility. Some of the individuals who were improperly treated in their childhood end up being social misfits, as they fail to develop coping mechanisms to handle the random stressors that arise during adulthood. For instance, a child who was physically assaulted has higher chances of developing aggressive behaviors which may see him land in jail for violence.
Going back to Bronfenbrenner and the Ecological Model, how have you been able to “connect the dots” so to speak, as to understanding the relationships of the family and it’s other components as discussed several times about child care issues, behaviors, nutrition, brain development, and early intervention
I have been in a position to understand that the relationship between nature and nurture is probably the biggest determinant of the direction that the childâs life will take. Everything from family strengths, all the way to nutrition will help determine the kind of person that the child will grow up to be. Children, in their early stages of life, develop character by studying the people around them. As such, if the parents and other close relatives are drawn to constant violence, it is almost certain that the children will end up as violent individuals. Early intervention always comes in handy to properly shape the direction the children will take while growing up. Parents can ensure that their children grow up to be straight individuals as long as the correction of negative behavior is done on time.
Many negative and in-appropriate practices have been shared by Manuel through his stories. What have you learned about “that aspect” of some classroom teachers and what negative effects might it have on the children and youth in the classroom setting?
Children, while growing up, spend a big part of their time in school. Here, teachers become the adults they are most exposed to, and for extended periods. It is, therefore, prudent that teachers recognize the role-model function they serve while in the classroom and ensure that they conduct themselves in such a manner that they provide proper direction for the children. Inappropriate practices such as improper dressing will eventually be passed on to the students. Teachers need always be aware that they are sending messages to their students by how they conduct themselves.
âTen Things Children Needâ was a big topic. Tell me about one of the â10â
One of the major things that children need in their lives is a sense of security. Children, like adults, will tend to be more peaceful when they are sure that their basic needs will be well taken care of. The knowledge that their guardians are peaceful also gives them the calmness, which allows them to focus on life-bettering activities such as schoolwork. Children, who come from families with strained ties between their parents, are always in a constant state of worry, something which leads to them not taking time to adequately focus on their education. Such children find it difficult to develop proper relationships of their own, both within and outside their homes. If the situation is not addressed in time, the children grow up with the undesirable character in their bones.
How can you be an âadvocateâ for the rights of children in your own life or community?
There are numerous ways in which I can be an advocate for the rights of children in my life and my community. First, as a teacher, I can dedicate time to let the children who live around me, as well as their parents, understand and appreciate their [the children’s] rights. This can be done by booking some time to speak in parent-teacher conferences and school assemblies. I can also play a direct advocacy role by ensuring that I report parents and/or guardians in my locale who may not be treating their children well. By ensuring that the people in my household are fully conversant with the rights of the children, I can start a wave that will spread to the entire community, through simple word of mouth.
What is âpoor quality careâ in the classroom and what could be done about it?
In the classroom, poor quality care is the failure of the teacher to understand the needs of his/her students and, therefore, end up disregarding them. In addressing the issue of poor quality care, the teachers need to be constantly assessed by their seniors as well as their peers, with recommendations made as pertains to the strengthening of areas of weakness. For instance, senior administrators in a school can sit in classes and observe how particular teachers interact with their students. The nature of the relationship can easily help determine the quality of care, in such a way that corrections can be made where mistakes are reported.
Describe how your understanding of the child, family, or community has made an impact on you as a student in the ECE field
My understanding of the child, family, and community have had a reinforcing impact on me as a student in early childhood education. This is because I now understand that how I treat the children in my class might end up having a lifelong impact on them. I have also learned that a child’s character will depend on the environment in which they are raised as well as the relationships they have with their guardians. With this knowledge in mind, it will be much easier for me to help students solve issues that hinder positive growth if they are rooted in the home environment.
Moreover, I can now easily step out as an advocate of childrenâs rights and confidently defend my stand should I be called to. I have learned that the career path I have taken has a profound impact on the shaping of people, and, therefore, when I begin practicing, I will not handle my duties lightly.

The role of teachers in a student’s life
Teachers have existed as long as humankind, and although the formats may change over time, their influence remains constant and significant.
Teaching is one of the oldest professions. The first forms of education appeared in ancient civilizations; there is evidence that the oldest formal school was opened in ancient Egypt, around 2000 BC. Back then, the privilege of education was reserved only for the descendants of royal houses and sons of aristocracy, or people from respectable professions, such as scribes, doctors, or court officials. In other words, the importance of education has been recognized since the very beginning of human civilization.
People advance from generation to generation thanks to knowledge transfer. Imagine if each generation had to start from scratch; if there was no developed language, no law, electricity, modern buildings and infrastructure, medicine, or the Internet – if there was nothing. Imagine if each generation had to create living conditions without the knowledge of the previous generations. It sounds terrifying. For that reason, the transfer of knowledge among people is vital for the whole world, and teachers play a key role in this transfer.
The role of teachers through history
Throughout history, teachers have played a role in shaping peopleâs character, which is not surprising, given the fact that a personâs character and personality are formed at an early age. In ancient times, teachers had somewhat different roles than they do today.
Teachers as a symbol
In ancient times, the teacher was considered a symbol of truth, beauty, and purity. Ancient India valued teachers very highly for their selfless service, high learning, and moral and spiritual purity.
Continuous transfer of knowledge was possible only with the help of teachers, and students had to rely on them, given that the printing press had not been invented yet, and there were no books. For that reason, teachers were shown great respect. They had to be honorable and moral people with a good grasp of their teaching area.
Teachers as guru
The word guru comes from Sanskrit. Gu stands for darkness, and Ru for light that dispels it, meaning that guru means one who dispels the darkness of ignorance, a person who guides young people toward light.
Guru is the name for a spiritual teacher in Hinduism, Sikhism and Tantric Buddhism. The ancient ideal of the guru was identified with the teacher, he was a source of wisdom and possessed absolute authority. He was associated with intellectual, spiritual and moral quality. The teacher was considered indispensable for students in their search for knowledge and the path to âawakeningâ from the dream of reality. It was the teacher who helped students to see the reality as it really was.
Teachers as advisors
The counseling role of teachers has remained relevant to this day. Throughout history, teachers enjoyed great respect in society , and their advice to students was not restricted solely to education, but extended to private matters as well.
This role has remained until today, but it has been modified, adapted to the modern age. Teachers now work with high school and university students to help them make important academic decisions that will guide them toward success in their future career. Those who work with high school students can offer advice on the courses they should take, when to take entrance exams, such as SAT and ACT, how to apply for the desired college/university, how to apply for financial aid, which training programs should be taken into consideration based on their qualifications, desires, etc.
The role of teachers in the modern age
The teacher used to have a central place in the education system. However, in the modern age, the student has taken the teacherâs place as the center of attention. We now consider student needs, their interests, preferences, age and potential as priority.
Teachers are no longer expected to teach each student in the exact same way. Contrary to tradition when they were once expected to teach using the same methods that had been used in the previous generations, any deviation from traditional practices was discouraged by supervisors, or prohibited by various laws and regulations.
The education process no longer involves rote learning of facts. It is now a process of extracting knowledge and potential from children. Teachers assess studentsâ nature, observe their interests, encourage them to reach their full potential, and inspire them to give their best. A modern teacher is expected to encourage students, provide suggestions, and empathize with them. He/she discreetly guides students to ask questions and reach conclusions on their own.
Teacherâs attention must be increasingly focused on the individual characteristics of each child. This is particularly important as America continues to be the country with the highest level of multiculturalism on the planet.

Teachers as leader
Leadership is perhaps the most important quality of modern people. Leaders establish connections with other people, and possess the ability to make everyone part of their mission. They possess a number of respectable qualities.
Teachers do not only have to help students master the teaching material, but also to transfer skills that will be useful in studentsâ personal lives. The role of a teacher is to create creative, well-informed and innovative individuals. The teacher, as a true leader, must guide students toward becoming leaders themselves, because leadership involves initiative, and nothing big will ever happen if we do not leave our comfort zone and step into the unknown.
Teachers as role model
A role model is someone who inspires and encourages us. Someone whose patterns of behavior we absorb and imitate, whether consciously or unconsciously. Given that children are at an age when they imitate everyone around them, usually unconsciously, and thus on a deeper level, the role of a teacher can be crucial in shaping their character.
Good teachers will not only speak, they will demonstrate and illustrate. There are countless examples when a teacher’s behavior shaped the personality of their students. For example, when the teacher makes a mistake, and it happens even to the best of them, they should not try to hide it from the children. Instead, they should say that theyâve made a mistake loud and clear. That way, they demonstrate that one should not be afraid of making mistakes, but accept them and learn from them. Another example involves teachers who strive to emphasize only positive things, thus teaching children that focusing on the silver lining and not letting oneself fall prey to despair is a good thing.
Teachers can also teach children critical thinking through modeling. When making important decisions, the teacher will think aloud, highlighting the pros and cons of the problem, and when passing judgments, the teacher will approach each aspect impartially. This way, students will unconsciously adopt critical thinking and apply it in the future.
It is through modeling that teachers teach students different moral values, and are able to instill qualities such as honesty, fairness, respect, commitment, and many others into them. This is another reason why teachers play a very important role in a student’s life.
Teachers as motivator
The best teachers are able to get their students to view themselves as people capable of great things. If a student truly believes in his/her value, this belief will be transferred to real life.
Numerous studies have shown the power of belief, and teachers can indeed influence their studentsâ beliefs to a great extent. Exceptional teachers constantly encourage students, and have the power to change their mindset .
The teacher as a motivator has the task to inspire student interest, which is very important, because an interest in learning directly affects learning achievement. There are several ways to stimulate student interest. The teacher can try to explain the purpose of learning a particular subject, by explaining to the children why it is important to know specific content, and what benefits they can get from it. Student interest will increase once they are aware of the benefits of mastering certain content.
Another important factor in stimulating student interest is their enjoyment in the learning process. Sincer there is a correlation between the feeling of satisfaction when learning, and achieving good results.
Teachers as a guide
Choosing a career path is nowadays quite a difficult decision for students. They are faced with the problem of plenty. In the modern age, there are so many options, that defining oneâs path is a real challenge. The teacher has an important role here too.
In addition to helping students to define their short term goals, teachers are also important when it comes to long-term goals. The teacher assumes the role of a mentor in a way, helping students to discover their hidden talents and interests. Moreover, teachers help students to choose a career in line with their affinities.
Teachers as friend
The famous Hindu monk, Swami Vivekananda, once said: âThe only true teacher is one who can immediately come down to the level of the student, and transfer his soul to the studentâs soul, and see through the studentâs eyes, and hear through his ears, and understand through his mind. Such a teacher can teach and none elseâ.
A friend is someone who understands us and someone we can rely on. If the teacher takes on the role of a friend, learning ceases to be an obligation, and becomes pleasure. Students react better to friendship than authority. If students view their teacher as a friend, they will not hesitate to openly express their opinions, which results in a better mutual understanding, and a relationship based on openness and trust. Such a relationship also has a positive effect on student mental health.

The role of Teachers has a great influence on students who walk on the path shown by their Gurus or Teachers. Teachers influence people’s lives and the advancement of nations and society in a variety of important ways. Their responsibilities span a range of areas, including instruction, character growth, and societal effects.
The primary responsibility for transferring knowledge and academic abilities to students is with their teachers. They provide subject-matter information, offer justifications, and promote learning through a variety of instructional strategies. Outstanding teachers encourage and inspire their students to reach their greatest potential while cultivating a lifelong love of learning.
Role of Teachers in Education
Sharing knowledge.
First and foremost, teaching is the key means by which a teacher transmits knowledge. Following a predetermined curriculum and ensuring that the pupils comprehend the material are typical requirements of teaching. All of a teacher’s other responsibilities stem from this one, as it may be challenging to have any other kind of effect on a child if a teacher doesn’t fulfil this fundamental duty to transfer knowledge.
Role Modeling
Despite the fact that instructors might not consider themselves role models, they truly are. It is feasible for teachers to have some level of impact on the pupils due to the amount of time students spend with them each day or week. Whether this influence is positive or detrimental now depends on the teacher. Teaching is more than just following the curriculum; it also involves shaping the child. Teachers assist students in developing their moral character in addition to imparting knowledge.
An External Parent
A teacher’s duties go beyond adhering to a set instructional plan and timeline. The instructor unintentionally takes on the role of an external parent because they spend so much time together with the students. Teachers can serve as a mentor to help the child choose the right course. The teacher can act as a source of inspiration and guidance for the students while also encouraging them student to be the best they can be in this capacity.
Drawing Real-life Connections
Real-world examples are rapidly and easily understood by students. When teaching, a competent teacher should relate different subjects to actual events and make an effort to help students understand the material. Teachers can relate to their students since they are their closest friends. It is easier for teachers and students alike to understand even complex concepts when they are demonstrated using real-world examples.

In order to establish and maintain inclusive learning environments, teachers are essential. The following are some essential components of a teacher’s involvement in inclusive education:
Making an Inclusive Learning Environment: Teachers should create a friendly, inclusive environment in their classrooms where each student feels valued, respected, and safe. They should promote a sense of community among the children by highlighting how differences are assets that should be valued.
Having a Deep Awareness of Students’ Diverse Needs: Teachers must have a thorough awareness of students’ various needs. They must be knowledgeable of the individualized education programmes (IEPs) or accommodations needed for students with disabilities and offer the support that is required.
Differentiated Instruction: Teachers must modify their lesson plans, assessments, and teaching strategies to take into account the diverse skills and learning preferences of their students. To fulfil the requirements of all students, they should employ a variety of instructional techniques, such as visual aids, practical exercises, and cooperative learning.

To guarantee that all students receive the assistance they require, effective communication and teamwork are crucial.
Promoting Peer Relationships: Teachers can help kids interact positively, fostering friendships and social ties amongst various social groupings. Putting in place initiatives that encourage collaboration and comprehension can aid in removing obstacles.
Individualized Support: Teachers should offer individualized support and interventions to students who have particular needs. This can involve extra tutoring, altered homework, or assistive technology. It is critical to regularly assess student development and modify support methods.
Encouragement of Inclusive Practices: Teachers should encourage inclusive practises in their schools and communities. They might be powerful advocates for the value of inclusive education. Teachers can stay current on best practises by taking part in professional development linked to inclusive education.
Culturally Responsive Teaching: In classrooms with a variety of students, teachers should practise cultural sensitivity by acknowledging and respecting the varied cultural backgrounds of their charges. Including many viewpoints in the curriculum and instructional materials promotes an inclusive learning environment.
Evaluation & Assessment: Teachers should employ a variety of evaluation techniques that enable students to exhibit their knowledge and abilities in various contexts. They must make sure that tests are impartial and do not prejudice any particular student group.
Continuous Learning: Since inclusive education is a developing area, educators should make a commitment to continual professional growth to advance their abilities to help a variety of students. It’s crucial to stay up to date with the most recent research and best practices.
Role and Significance of Teachers in Indian History
In Indian history, teachers have had a tremendous impact on the nation’s intellectual and cultural heritage as well as its social and political development. These instances illustrate the importance and role of educators throughout Indian history:
Guru-Shishya Tradition: The guru, or teacher, was an honoured figure in ancient India. The tradition of the guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) was fundamental to Indian culture and education. Along with imparting knowledge, teachers also provided their students with moral and spiritual direction. The Bhagavad Gita’s portrayal of the interaction between Lord Krishna and his disciple Arjuna is one of the most well-known instances of this. In it, Arjuna experiences a moral dilemma and Krishna provides him with great insight and direction.
Nalanda and Taxila Universities: These historic educational institutions in India drew researchers and learners from all over the world. Chanakya (Kautilya) and Aryabhata, two Nalanda and Taxila professors, made substantial contributions to the study of mathematics, astronomy, politics, and ethics. Their ideas had a significant and enduring influence on Indian thought.
Sant Kabir and Guru Nanak: Spiritual leaders who taught teachings of love, equality, and religious tolerance were Sant Kabir and Guru Nanak, who both challenged accepted religious beliefs. They promoted social harmony and unity using their teachings, which are still prevalent in contemporary India.
Rabindranath Tagore: Visva-Bharati University was established by poet, philosopher, and educator Rabindranath Tagore, who also promoted comprehensive education. He emphasized the value of combining Indian and Western educational theories, and he worked to foster an atmosphere that would allow pupils to grow creatively and spiritually. His approach to education has had a long-lasting influence on Indian education.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan : The first Vice President and second President of India, Dr. Radhakrishnan, was a renowned philosopher. He played a key part in developing contemporary Indian education as well as Indian philosophy. To honour the efforts of teachers, India observes Teacher’s Day on his birthday, September 5.

Children are like clay in a potter's hands. Just as a potter gives a desired shape to the clay in his hands, so do children become what their parents make them. This is primarily the reason why the early growing years in a child's life are the most crucial and lay the foundation for developing their nature, personality and the individual self. These days, more and more children live in a household where both parents are working and often, such children rely heavily on their teachers for help, advice and guidance. There is no denying the fact that the role of a teacher in a student's life is very crucial right from the time when a child joins a day care centre to the stage when he / she takes a step forward towards establishing a professional career.
r, My Caretaker : The first instance when an individual comes in contact with a teacher is when he / she is a toddler. A large percentage of working mothers all over the world send their children to day care where the child is taken care of, from morning to evening by teachers who feed them, play with them and take care of their every need.My Teacher, My Friend : The concept of play schools has become quite popular. Before starting regular schools, many parents enroll their children to play schools where kids of similar age groups come in contact with one another.
Here too, teachers become a child's trusted friend and teach kids to open their minds to new activities, thoughts and information. My Teacher, My Knowledge Bank: Proper education is the need of the da
if we want our country to progress. This is because every child must be given the best level of education possible and to achieve this, it is essential to develop proper infrastructure, open new schools in villages as well as cities and hire well trained, motivated teachers who can not only act as facilitators of education but also guide students and become a good role model for them. Besides school education, the years spent in college also shape the future of individuals.
Here again, Lecturers and Professors have the power to truly inspire these young individuals to develop their thought processes and choose the right path in their pursuit for quality education. My Teacher, My Inspiration: Without even realizing it, teachers have the ability to create a strong like or dislike for the subject they teach their students. The most monotonous / serious subjects can be made interesting by an inspired and dedicated teacher. Often text books and curriculums become outdated. However, an inspired teacher can overcome these issues by keeping themselves updated with new concepts, teaching methodologies, and technological breakthroughs. It has been rightly said that 'children are the future of any country' and teachers play an important role in shaping their bright future.

Whatâs it like to be a teacher in america today, public k-12 teachers are stressed about their jobs and few are optimistic about the future of education; many say poverty, absenteeism and mental health are major problems at their school.
Pew Research Center conducted this study to better understand the views and experiences of public K-12 school teachers. The analysis in this report is based on an online survey of 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers conducted from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers surveyed are members of RANDâs American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public K-12 school teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.
Here are the questions used for this report , along with responses, and the survey methodology .
Low-poverty , medium-poverty and high-poverty schools are based on the percentage of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics (less than 40%, 40%-59% and 60% or more, respectively).
Secondary schools include both middle schools and high schools.
All references to party affiliation include those who lean toward that party. Republicans include those who identify as Republicans and those who say they lean toward the Republican Party. Democrats include those who identify as Democrats and those who say they lean toward the Democratic Party.
Public K-12 schools in the United States face a host of challenges these days â from teacher shortages to the lingering effects of COVID-19 learning loss to political battles over curriculum .
In the midst of all this, teachers express low levels of satisfaction with their jobs. In fact, theyâre much less satisfied than U.S. workers overall.
Hereâs how public K-12 teachers are feeling about their jobs:
- 77% say their job is frequently stressful.
- 68% say itâs overwhelming.
- 70% say their school is understaffed.
- 52% say they would not advise a young person starting out today to become a teacher.
When it comes to how their students are doing in school, teachers are relatively downbeat about both academic performance and behavior.
Hereâs how public K-12 teachers rate academic performance and behavior at their school:
- 48% say the academic performance of most students at their school is fair or poor. A third say itâs good, and only 17% describe it as excellent or very good.
- 49% say the behavior of most students at their school is fair or poor; 35% say itâs good and 13% say itâs excellent or very good.
The COVID-19 pandemic likely compounded these issues. About eight-in-ten teachers (among those who have been teaching for at least a year) say the lasting impact of the pandemic on studentsâ behavior, academic performance and emotional well-being has been very or somewhat negative.
Assessments of student performance and behavior differ widely by school poverty level. 1 Teachers in high-poverty schools have a much more negative outlook. But feelings of stress and dissatisfaction among teachers are fairly universal, regardless of where they teach.

As they navigate these challenges, teachers donât feel theyâre getting the support or reinforcement they need from parents.
Majorities of teachers say parents are doing too little when it comes to holding their children accountable if they misbehave in school, helping them with their schoolwork and ensuring their attendance.
Teachers in high- and medium-poverty schools are more likely than those in low-poverty schools to say parents are doing too little in each of these areas.
These findings are based on a survey of 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers conducted Oct. 17-Nov. 14, 2023, using the RAND American Teacher Panel. 2 The survey looks at the following aspects of teachersâ experiences:

- How teachers manage their workload (Chapter 2)
- Problems students are facing at public K-12 schools (Chapter 3)
- Challenges in the classroom (Chapter 4)
- Teachersâ views of parent involvement (Chapter 5)
- Teachersâ views on the state of public K-12 education (Chapter 6)
Problems students are facing
We asked teachers about some of the challenges students at their school are facing. Three problems topped the list:
- Poverty (53% say this is a major problem among students who attend their school)
- Chronic absenteeism (49%)
- Anxiety and depression (48%)
Chronic absenteeism (that is, students missing a substantial number of school days) is a particular challenge at high schools, with 61% of high school teachers saying this is a major problem where they teach. By comparison, 46% of middle school teachers and 43% of elementary school teachers say the same.
Anxiety and depression are viewed as a more serious problem at the secondary school level: 69% of high school teachers and 57% of middle school teachers say this is a major problem among their students, compared with 29% of elementary school teachers.
Fewer teachers (20%) view bullying as a major problem at their school, though the share is significantly higher among middle school teachers (34%).
A look inside the classroom
We also asked teachers how things are going in their classroom and specifically about some of the issues that may get in the way of teaching.
- 47% of teachers say students showing little or no interest in learning is a major problem in their classroom. The share rises to 58% among high school teachers.
- 33% say students being distracted by their cellphones is a major problem. This is particularly an issue for high school teachers, with 72% saying this is a major problem.
- About one-in-five teachers say students getting up and walking around when theyâre not supposed to and being disrespectful toward them (21% each) are major problems. Teachers in elementary and middle schools are more likely than those in high schools to see these as challenges.
A majority of teachers (68%) say theyâve experienced verbal abuse from a student â such as being yelled at or threatened. Some 21% say this happens at least a few times a month.
Physical violence is less common. Even so, 40% of teachers say a student has been violent toward them , with 9% saying this happens at least a few times a month.
About two-thirds of teachers (66%) say that the current discipline practices at their school are very or somewhat mild. Only 2% say the discipline practices at their school are very or somewhat harsh, while 31% say they are neither harsh nor mild. Most teachers (67%) say teachers themselves donât have enough influence in determining discipline practices at their school.
Behavioral issues and mental health challenges
In addition to their teaching duties, a majority of teachers (58%) say they have to address behavioral issues in their classroom every day. About three-in-ten teachers (28%) say they have to help students with mental health challenges daily.
In each of these areas, elementary and middle school teachers are more likely than those at the high school level to say they do these things on a daily basis.
And teachers in high-poverty schools are more likely than those in medium- and low-poverty schools to say they deal with these issues each day.
Cellphone policies and enforcement
Most teachers (82%) say their school or district has policies regarding cellphone use in the classroom.
Of those, 56% say these policies are at least somewhat easy to enforce, 30% say theyâre difficult to enforce, and 14% say theyâre neither easy nor difficult to enforce.
Experiences with cellphone policies vary widely across school levels. High school teachers (60%) are much more likely than middle school (30%) and elementary school teachers (12%) to say the policies are difficult to enforce (among those who say their school or district has a cellphone policy).
How teachers are experiencing their jobs
Thinking about the various aspects of their jobs, teachers are most satisfied with their relationship with other teachers at their school (71% are extremely or very satisfied).
Theyâre least satisfied with how much theyâre paid â only 15% are extremely or very satisfied with their pay, while 51% are not too or not at all satisfied.
Among teachers who donât plan to retire or stop working this year, 29% say itâs at least somewhat likely they will look for a new job in the 2023-24 school year. Within that group, 40% say they would look for a job outside of education, 29% say theyâd seek a non-teaching job in education, and only 18% say theyâd look for a teaching job at another public K-12 school.
Do teachers find their work fulfilling and enjoyable?
Overall, 56% of teachers say they find their job to be fulfilling extremely often or often; 53% say their job is enjoyable. These are significantly lower than the shares who say their job is frequently stressful (77%) or overwhelming (68%).
Positive experiences are more common among newer teachers. Two-thirds of those whoâve been teaching less than six years say their work is fulfilling extremely often or often, and 62% of this group says their work is frequently enjoyable.
Teachers with longer tenures are somewhat less likely to feel this way. For example, 48% of those whoâve been teaching for six to 10 years say their work is frequently enjoyable.
Balancing the workload
Most teachers (84%) say thereâs not enough time during their regular work hours to do tasks like grading, lesson planning, paperwork and answering work emails.
Among those who feel this way, 81% say simply having too much work is a major reason.
Many also point to having to spend time helping students outside the classroom, performing non-teaching duties like lunch duty, and covering other teachersâ classrooms as at least minor reasons they donât have enough time to get all their work done.
A majority of teachers (54%) say itâs very or somewhat difficult for them to balance work and their personal life. About one-in-four (26%) say itâs very or somewhat easy for them to balance these things, and 20% say itâs neither easy nor difficult.
Among teachers, women are more likely than men to say work-life balance is difficult for them (57% vs. 43%). Women teachers are also more likely to say they often find their job stressful or overwhelming.
How teachers view the education system
A large majority of teachers (82%) say the overall state of public K-12 education has gotten worse in the past five years.
And very few are optimistic about the next five years: Only 20% of teachers say public K-12 education will be a lot or somewhat better five years from now. A narrow majority (53%) say it will be worse.
Among teachers who think things have gotten worse in recent years, majorities say the current political climate (60%) and the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (57%) are major reasons. A sizable share (46%) also point to changes in the availability of funding and resources.

Which political party do teachers trust more to deal with educational challenges?
On balance, more teachers say they trust the Democratic Party than say they trust the Republican Party to do a better job handling key issues facing the K-12 education system. But three-in-ten or more across the following issues say they donât trust either party:
- Shaping school curriculum (42% say they trust neither party)
- Ensuring teachers have adequate pay and benefits (35%)
- Making schools safer (35%)
- Ensuring adequate funding for schools (33%)
- Ensuring all students have equal access to high-quality K-12 education (31%)
A majority of public K-12 teachers (58%) identify or lean toward the Democratic Party. This is higher than the share among the general public (47%).

Student expands education through role at university arts center
Brody Brown, a sophomore Music Education major, earned a promotion to the position of head house manager for Rockefeller Arts Center at the State University of New York at Fredonia, an experience which he says will help him reach his career goals.
Learning takes place in many different ways at the State University of New York at Fredonia, and Brody Brown is doing his best to take advantage of this fact.
Brown, a sophomore from Lancaster, N.Y., is pursuing a Music Education degree with a minor in Arts Administration. His immediate goal is to become a high school chorus teacher.
Brown also has his eye on long-range goals like becoming a music department chairperson and possibly moving into music administration.
As a freshman in the fall of 2022, Brown saw an opportunity to expand his Fredonia experience toward such goals by joining the volunteer usher corps at Rockefeller Arts Center.
“I saw the house manager and ushers working during a large event and figured it would be a great way to get practical experience toward my career,” Brown said. “I got started at Rockefeller Arts Center simply by asking.”
Jody Falkner was the front-of-house coordinator for Rockefeller Arts Center at the time Brown stepped forward.
“Brody sought me out and wanted to know how he could get a job at Rockefeller,” she said. “While ushering, he quickly learned every role and asked a lot of really good questions. He was like a sponge just soaking it all in.”
By the following semester, Brown had earned a promotion to house manager.
“That’s when I saw him shine even brighter,” Falkner said. “He attended and participated in every usher orientation, assisted with usher recruitment, revised the usher handbook and simplified the house checklists.”
Falkner said Brown’s ability to trouble shoot and solve problems made him stand out as a leader. She recalled an event in which there was a problem with the ticket printer and Brown promptly took charge and resolved the situation.
“He relieved the pressure on the ticket office staff and the show started on time,” she said.
Through his work at Rockefeller Arts Center, Brown has learned the value of good communica-tion skills.
“Communication is a key factor of leadership and in a field where things are constantly changing, concise communication is critical,” he said. “A successful house manager is simply someone who know how to communicate.”
Falkner said she would rate Brown’s performance as a house manager as “A++.”
“Brody is a great communicator,” she said. “He’s articulate, friendly and leads by example.”
Brown was promoted to an even bigger role in the summer of 2023 when he was named head house manager after Falkner left to join the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County. He suc-cessfully kept Rockefeller’s front-of-house operations running smoothly until Daniel Cherry, the replacement for Falkner, could be hired in January.
“My work at RAC is really preparing me for working with audiences and working in administra-tion,” Brown said.
At the same time, getting involved at Rockefeller Arts Center has enhanced Brown’s overall Fre-donia experience.
“I enjoy that I get to work with so many people and that I get to see so many events at RAC,” he said. “Everything I do is fun, as well as being great experience for leadership and administration.”
